Indeed, but the French neo-classical, for exemple (which includes second empire style), is not the same than others, and many neo-classical buildings in the world are clearly influenced by the French one....

In the Low Countries, French architecture has influenced the local styles for ages. In medieval times there is the gothic style, here in Utrecht (Domkerk):

In the southern province of Brabant a unique Lowlands style was developed, the so called "Brabantian gothique" (Brabantse Gotiek / Gothique Brabançon) which is heavily influenced by French examples. The masterpiece of this Brabantse Gotiek is the St. Romboutskathedraal in Mechelen. Other examples are the cathedral of Antwerp and, being the most northern example, the Grote Kerk of Alkmaar.

The French classical architecture had a major influence on the cityscape of Brussels, which is therefore called Klein Parijs (Little Paris), but is less seen in the northern regions (Holland). Amsterdam is one of the few European capitals whitout Paris-like boulevards and classical monuments on every corner.

I know there's a French Castle in Iran (I think that's how they call it) from the time of the crusades, there's also the Krak des Chevaliers in Syria that's massive.

There has also been quite a few cathedrals in the middle ages that were built by architects from France or by foreign architects who learned that style in France. Lincoln Cathedral was built, for example, by Hugh of Avalon (Avalon here is a small village in Burgundy, has nothing to do with the Arthurian city apart the name) as far as I remember and the architect who built the Magdeburger Dom in Germany (one the very firsts German gothic cathedral if not the first) was built by a German architect (Albrecht II von Kefernburg) who learned that style in France.

Castles of the crusades like Krak des Chevaliers don't have french influence, they are just french, although they were built so far.
In Spain french architecture is obvious in many french cathedrals, and romanic churchs too. And we had (and have) a french dinasty, so many royal palaces are inspired in french palaces too (la Granja palace, for example).

But in the photos of the post, in most of them I can't see a french architecture influence, just european...

Don't forget the French Second Empire Style was copied in every major cities of Europe in 19th century (except maybe in Italy and Netherlands), the same for French Beaux Arts/neo-Classical Style (Versailles) and also mansard-roof style which is clearly french also.

That's why you call it "European Style", because, indeed, you can find it all over Europe !

But for the non-European, it's still a French style !

From what I see most photos here are about few styles, mainly Second Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Empire) and Gothic architecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Architecture). These definately found their roots into France. It's true you can find these all accross Europe but it's French influenced architecture nonetheless, it's like saying, for example, that neoclassical buildings of Paris (Arc de Triomphe or the Pantheon) have not been Greek influenced but European influenced. A characteristic of the Second Empire style being that they use Mansard roof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansard_roof), a typical feature now presents all accross Europe but that find its roots to François Mansart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/François_Mansart).

There are there are several different styles that originated in France or have been been French influenced.

For the Second Empire style the Mansart roofs are a good hint because there really were popularised and reached world fame in France. The elevation is another good one as they are highly decorated with statues and stuffs.

In Gothic Architecture it's the use of pointed vaults and extensive use of stained glasses that makes it look that way. They also use ribbed vault, a feature that appeared on late Romanesque churchs and was first used in England (but then again with French architects who made the experience in England, afaik the first church with ribbed vaults is the Durham Cathedral and is built in what they call the Norman style). What really defines a gothic church is the size of the choir, when you're in you should have the sensation to really be in what should be a house of god and the light must enter the building through the stained glasses, giving the sensation we are at the gates of heaven (well at least that's the desired effect). The Gothic style is less uniform though, in France there were attempts to create a coherent style but in England they just built cathedrals in several steps with no attempt to create a single unified style although several of their cathedrals were designed by French architects (and here I don't mean just Normans) as they considered the use over the design and there were also regular money shortage. The German style is much closer to the French one, with transcepts stuck to the torso, two front towers and a very tall nave and choir. But their cathedrals were often built by German architects although they trully imported the style from France. Maybe you can say the German style has been trully influenced by French style despite using local architects and the English style, despite using French architects, is more specific. In all cases these buildings are often highly decorated with statues and other details (see Art Nouveau too), a bit like the Second Empire style would much later.

There are few other minor styles, like the Creole style develloped in colonies then in DOMs-TOMs but they aren't that influencial.

The Spanish versions seem to have balconies which the French seem to have much less. The balcony originally came for Lombardy if I'm not mistaken.

About French Architecture there is also french windows, rococo style, French provincial style, French "Louis XIII" style (stone & brick mix), French Renaissance (which is unique because this is a mix with Medieval/gothic architecture like Chambord Castle).......
All these French versions or styles have had influence in many countries in the world.

Buildings with "no roof" I mean when it's hidden, came from italian renaissance.
This style begun in Italy but was used in the french neoclassicism (like in Versailles). The French version (thanks to Versailles) had influenced many architectures in Europe and in the World and has influenced also the Beaux Arts style (included the First building in Shanghai).

It makes sense not to have balconies on the first and last levels. They really add to the architecture. I'm a fan of bigger, more functional balconies but the smaller ones are aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks I think Buenos Aires is the largest city with a French influence in its architecture in the world, as the French influence is not only confined to the city center but is also a km from the center.

It's more to search by style. Typicaly French architectural style are:

- Gothic Architecture (formerly known as French architecture actually)
- Second Empire

That's about it, there are of course other architectural styles that are well present in France but they originated from other places (ie: romanesque, baroque & neo-baroque, classical & neo-classical).

It would be meaningless to categorize the entite gothic tradition as French, even if it reached its first mature expression in France. That would be saying that all classically inspired buildings are Greek. England has its own gothic tradition, because the use of similar elements produced a different vernacular there from that of France. Whether the architects were born in France is quite irrelevant, because categorization is not about crediting a particular country but simply to classify. Similarly, the French mannerist or baroque styles are not Greek or Italian because French architects used classical elements to form a uniquely French expression of classical ideals.

We would refer to something being in French style, when the building is meant to exude a particular Frenchness. Second empire and beaux arts have always been popular to copy beacuse of associations to wealth and style. The Mansard roof is often seen as a strikingly French feature, but can also be incorporated into buildings that overall are not French. There are German examples of this.

The fact that Buenos Aires is so reliable to the French architectural style, is caused because the Argentinean capital was, designed by French architects and urban landscape designers, in the XIX and XX.
So, you could see that there are many buildings that are like sisters in Paris and Baires.

I fully agree with you about your city being the most French-influenced city in the world !!

You could even show me a pic of some of the "second Empire/Belle Époque" buildings and/or streets of Buenos Aires and telling me they are Parisian ones... And I'd certainly believe this is true !

I said some buildings/streets because apparently many French-influenced buildings in Buenos Aires are... almost the same than we have in Paris...except the number of floors ;) (yours are much, much taller in many cases)

^^ Yes parcdesprinces, I agree with you, Bueno Aires is strong influenced boy a lot of styles, but the French style is one of the most common in the city and one of the most beautiful. I love french architecture, I think it's the most elegant and beautiful style of all times.

Actually I'm not chauvinist but we can consider the French late XIXth century architecture as one of most astonishing. It influenced the world particularly with the Haussman plan in the 1860's, making Paris a brilliant and modern city with his endless avenues, his beautiful plazas and palaces. Even if the interested for french architecture goes back to classical architecture with Versailles.

But the British Neogothical archiecture, the Belgian-Catalan New art and the Austrian-German art deco have deeply influenced architecture too.

I see Classicism (of various types), Moorish, Byzantine, (Italian) Neo Renaissance, and Art Deco styles here.

Actually the purpose of the thread wa to view examples of French influence around the world; in Algeria, this is more than a French influence, this is French architecture. These algerian cities look pretty much like any typical French city, in pure Haussmanian style, being built by the French who were living here.

Well, when I opened this thread I had French Classicism & Neo-Clacissism in mind (Beaux Art style, Mansard roofs, Second Empire/Haussmann etc), but other styles can be added such as French Art-Nouveau, Gothic, French Gothic revival, Normandy style, French country style, French Renaissance/French Renaissance revival, French neo-Byzantine style etc etc etc.
(+ the replicas of some French buildings/monuments built abroad etc)

PS: And about Algeria, I have to agree with francois83, but well ... at least most of the Algerian examples posted here meet the "criteria" regarding their architectural styles :).

yes but architectural style is very similar to a persian house
i noticed the link the first time as it said orleans, and to be honest i disregarded the fact lol i thought tt was iran
regardless, the architecture isnt french, maybe the brick layout and the window sheds are european styled, which are also seen in the north of iran
secondly , its a picture of poor quality
if various details need to be shown , il be glad to see them

theres persian garden layouts all over france and britain, it doesnt make the layout french or british, courtyard houses developed in mesopotamia/iran and the fertile crescent in general
the second school u showed me easily resembles the typical safavid-qajar house style, almost the exact same, even if its outside of iran, with small detail changes

I don't know if you have ever been to La Nouvelle Orléans.. But if so, you should have noticed, Like I had when I've been there, that the so-called "French Quarter" has nothing French regarding its architecture (except the St-Louis Cathedral). Btw, in French, we call this area "le Vieux Carré".

It is not really possible to deny the influence of French and other European architectures in the Persian architecture especially in the recent centuries, a Persian traditional building has some characteristics, one of them is Iwan, look at those historical houses in Kashan, Yazd and Isfahan, there should be also a pool in the centre of the courtyard, we can't ignore wall decoration too, ... I wonder how you see this simple two storey building as a Persian traditional building!

the iVan (notice the v instead of the arabic pronounciation as a w) is not present, yet these courtyards are very similar to the old court yard houses in tabriz and esfahan or kashan
