View Full Version : Third Best Skyline in the US (with poll)
New Jack City November 12th, 2003, 01:06 AM Most of us would agree that NYC and Chicago lock up the two top spots for best skylines in the US. Though, it's unclear which skyline comes after these two for the third best skyline position. In your opinion, which skyline in the US is the third best skyline after NYC and Chicago?

Same here. All three have such dense, amazing skylines that are wonderful. Battle of the West Coast! ;)
FloTownballer November 13th, 2003, 02:13 AM HOUSTON the one the only number three:guns1:
bay_area November 13th, 2003, 02:27 AM I say Houston because that City has the 3rd largest number of skyscrapers taller then 400' and San Francisco is 4th because it has the 4th most skyscrapers taller then 400'.
Really though, its all a matter of opinion.
JivecitySTL November 13th, 2003, 03:40 AM Houston has absolutely no density and no variation in its building style. It's just a collection of modern towers plopped in a field. There is no depth whatsover. When I went there I felt like I was in a suburb with a tall building here and a tall building there. Quite uninteresting for a major city IMO>
Now look at Philly-- a nice mix of modern and historic architecture with fantastic density and raw grit beyond the towers. It's a real city with significant contrast and substance.
No offense, but Houston? :?
bay_area November 13th, 2003, 05:28 AM Philadelphia has always been one of my favorites as well:)
Fiddlerontheruf November 13th, 2003, 05:50 AM PHILLY
Rainier Meadows November 13th, 2003, 05:50 AM Philly is also one of the largest cities to actually lose population in recent estimates.......while Houston has gained a little........doesn't make for a better skyline but possibly better liveability.......although everyone I talk to thinks Houston can be unbearable.......especially in the hot & humid summers -- as far as skyline is concerned philly over houston anytime though.........

That's one of the reasons why I am moving to Philly from Houston that and I want to be back in the northeast and closer to family...
Roch5220 November 13th, 2003, 06:40 PM Seattle definately.
LA should be bigger/better in my opinion, quite unfortunate.
Houston's skyline looks so akward when you in and around Houston, but not in the CBD. It just sticks out as there is no gradual buildup. Galeria is a decent 2nd skyline, but I laugh when I hear people who say that the Houston medical centre is another skyline. I guess they are being literal in their meaning of skyline.
hudkina November 13th, 2003, 08:01 PM Well my #3 will always be Detroit, but sensibly I'd go for Philadelphia or San Francisco.

daniel_18 November 14th, 2003, 06:23 PM Number three would be Miami.

1. Chicago
2. Seattle
3. Miami
4. NYC

Wu-Gambino November 15th, 2003, 04:08 AM Seattle or LA.
bgwah November 15th, 2003, 05:38 AM Hehe, what if I said New York or Chicago? Seems like we've just assumed they are #1 and #2.
Anyways, I VOTE FOR SEATTLE! Looks like it's only competition for #3 is Philadelphia.
Seattle KICKED LA's ass at a "Best West Coast skyline" SSP poll. It also beat SF by a comfortable margin.

Although I haven't been to San Francisco (and I think you really need to see a skyline in person to judge it), I agree that Miami is not #3 by a long shot. Even though it's smaller, I like Jacksonville better.

Houston has some great individual buildings, but the skyline looks more like a comb than a wall of skyscrapers you might find in other cities. Still one of the best skylines in the country, but not #3.

Clean??? umm, didn't Houston take away the crown from L.A. as having more days of smog alerts in a year?
tocoto November 17th, 2003, 08:13 PM Atlanta dallas houston - talls but no density. Dallas has few new tall buildings, looks tired.
Philly has a few talls but not many (9 >500'), has density but gritty isn't real pretty especially in person.
Seattle is great, but smallish in extent.
Miami maybe, give it few years to build out a little and add more height.
How about Boston. Extremely dense. Very expansive hi rise area. Lots of new buildings to go with old. As tall as the others (16 500'+) with the exception of 800 ft + buildings. Many great angles with extensive waterfront.
J.A.C. November 17th, 2003, 11:10 PM ummm...no! Still not very impressive skyline...
tocoto November 18th, 2003, 01:01 AM Pictures of skylines are an entirely different story than the real thing, up close and in person. Few people who have been to Boston find its skyline unimpressive. The best, no, but definitely up there.

That might be plausible except for the fact that San Francisco has far more projects and DT highrise developments in the works then DT Seattle does:D
This is an illustration of buildings either under construction or approved for construction in DT San Francisco that arent even up yet. In the US, Only Miami(and NYC and Chicago) are more active at this moment then DT San Francisco is.:D

really though, what Im tired of seeing is pictures of ugly plastic looking spires and fake glass buildings that do nothing but hide dead streets where crickets chirp at 12PM-hahahahahaha.:D
And I never ever said that San Francisco is the third best skyline..SF doesnt need that.....cause its already the third best downtown....and that doesnt look like its ever gonna change no matter how many more spires go up-but since SF has been more active in building highrises over the last 5 years then any DT in the US with the exception of NYC, Chicago and Miami-it doesnt look like the other cities are actually growing in the height department either. :D
How sad.

bay_area November 20th, 2003, 01:13 AM I think you have to go there to like the skyline. Once you're there there are skyscrapers everywhere.
yes but you see, the SF experience is not the rule, but rather the exception...and most americans are not accustomed to teeming cities with buildings directly next to each other because their cities are neither teeming nor at a point where their highrises are in some cases only a few feet from each other.
I look at this whole question this way..
Which City has the 3rd Best Skyline...
From a distance-Houston
From inside the DT-San Francisco
Of course, that way of thinking may be too avant garde for some of our less open-minded but still esteemed peers here at SSC.

based on what? and second of all I do believe this was AFTER New York and Chicago. :colgate: Some of those cities in there should NOT even BE in there, like Atlanta which really has a bunch of the same looking buildigns with the spires on them over a very flat land...:baaa:

The individual buildings are impressive, but it really does feel like skyscrapers in a field. Downtown Houston doesn't have a city feel. When LA gets to this level of highrise concentration, then we'll talk about LA being 3rd. In the meantime, NOPE.

tocoto November 21st, 2003, 06:58 AM Albuquerque (5000') is higher than atlanta and is probably near or past the 500,000 major city mark. Phoenix 1200', Tuscon 2200', colo springs 6000', and Las Vegas 1200' are close to or higher than Atlanta too.

San Francisco skyline is just ok, its dozens of low to mid rises don't add up much to its skyline, sorry.
It also appears you are confusing density with an attractive skyline which are two very different things.

MJ939 November 21st, 2003, 03:32 PM Regarding Atlanta, HIGH and FLAT are two very different things.
San Francisco doesn't impress me that much, although I haven't seen it in person. Like daortiz said, too many medium sized buildings. LA seems better, but still lacks color and density.
I would take Houston, Atlanta, and Philly over LA. Although Houston and Atlanta don't have much density, they have great individual buildings.
Westin Peachtree November 21st, 2003, 04:43 PM bay_area you're halarious.
SF has density and based on that you think it deserves some recognition...we are talking about skylines here. Not which city is winning in the density category. And based on skylines alone, SF isn't up to par, at all.
"it doesnt look like the other cities are actually growing in the height department either."
OK? The city of Atlanta has a 650 foot building under construction, 2 400 footers, and 300 footers out the whazoo going up. Look at Houston also, they are building up.
In the diagrams looking from the year 1998 to 2006, I can see only see 10 buildings in which were completed and under construction with 20 floors or more. Looking at Atlanta I can see 19 buildings. If anything, other cities in the US are building up in the height department.
Christianmx November 21st, 2003, 06:17 PM Im sorry, there are too many open gaps here. And nice individual towers arent enough for me to pick LA as 3rd.

I mean, nice towers in between gaps is ugly IMO. I much rather prefer to see little gaps because that means the skyline is more developed and denotes concentration of buildings...otherwise they look suburban. Sorry, but nice try.
OK? The city of Atlanta has a 650 foot building under construction, 2 400 footers, and 300 footers out the whazoo going up. Look at Houston also, they are building up.
And Im sorry to disappoint you but San Francisco is still building more at the moment then either Atlanta or Houston and between 1999 and 2003, San Francisco has built more 300+ footers then ANY city except Miami, NYC and Chicago...and youre bragging about highrises being built that are scattered about several miles from each other and Im bragging about dozens of new highrises in a single neighborhood-you really have no concept-sorry.
So please spare me the pretense. Atlanta and Houston have both been pretty barren in the new highrise category for what-10 years? Likewise for LA(which is the most pathetic skyline of all) and so on.
*yawn* this is getting boring..

Hands down, LA is 3rd because of its amazing and unique skyscrapers, its density (downtown) and its location.
No competition there imho...Philly is 4th with Minneapolis close behind ;)
Mplsuptown November 23rd, 2003, 06:27 AM I have to agree with tictac, my vote goes to L.A. The buildings seem to have a nice cohesive look to them. Minneapolis is often referred as the Minny Apple, but I think it really resembles more of a Minny Orange.
On a recent Downtown Council Planning Meeting, they projected that by 2020 DT Minneapolis will have at a minimum 13 more IDS size buildings up to a maximum of 18. I personally find the minimum quite high but in 17 years, who knows.
MCC November 23rd, 2003, 05:17 PM I'm leaning towards LA now, but I want to go to SF one more time before I decide.

MJ939 December 23rd, 2003, 06:23 AM Great photos Naptown, and that's a nice skyline, definitely one of the best in the US. But, it shouldn't be third because it's simply too short.
Wu-Gambino December 23rd, 2003, 03:40 PM Yes, SF's tallest is 853 ft, which isn't tall compared to the other canidates.
Style™ December 23rd, 2003, 05:21 PM I think he just wanted to flash that awsome photo! :D
SF's skyline is dense and has a good selection of buildings that are all visiable from many angles. Much better than LA's boxes which are all in one small cluster. Sure, it is dense. But, you can't see half the buildings!
fredcalif December 23rd, 2003, 05:39 PM I think a skyline should be define by its density.
it will have to be not only the tall building, but the amount of buidings and the gaps between them.
San Francisco is the third best skyline in the us. there is not doubt about it.
after SF will be
LA
Houston
Seattle
Dallas
Minneapolis
Boston
Atlanta
Philadelphia
Miami
Detroit
Atlanta and dallas have nice skyline, but there are too many gaps.
You can walk in any street in Dowtown san
francisco and see skyscrapers everywhere. they are so close together, only New york have a skyline better than that and maye Chicago
nostyle December 23rd, 2003, 05:49 PM Personally, I'd say Philly, but I also like Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. They aren't massive, but they're aesthetically pleasing.
By comparison, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas are bigger, but not as pleasing to the eye IMO.
Wu-Gambino December 23rd, 2003, 06:00 PM Seems like the following cities are canidates:
Seattle
Los Angeles
Minneapolis
Miami
Atlanta
Dallas
Houston
San Francisco
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Any others?
Maybe this should be made into a poll.
MJ939 December 23rd, 2003, 06:24 PM I don't think Miami or Pittsburgh should be considered.
We're going to go on about this forever, but for some reason I don't mind...
fredcalif December 23rd, 2003, 06:28 PM I AGREE WITH YOU MJ939
MIAMI IS OUT OF THE PICTURE AS WELL AS PITTSBURG
YOU CAN COUNT THE BUILDING WITH YOU HANDS, THERE ARE SO MANY GAPS BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS
Maybe is not san francisco but it is not miami either
Skyscrapers.com said the houston, LA, SF ARE THE FRONT RUNNER FOR THIRD, I AGREE WITH THAT
daniel_18 December 23rd, 2003, 06:29 PM ^Yeah right. Pittsburgh's skyline is better than Philadelphia's, IMO.

Wu-Gambino December 23rd, 2003, 06:45 PM Well, as long as people vote for them, they should be considered.
Might want to include Boston in that list, considering it has 10+ 500 foot buildings.
nostyle December 23rd, 2003, 07:21 PM This is such a subjective topic, you can't really rule out any particular skyline. I mean, I personally think Chicago is the best skyline in the country, but most people would disagree with me. It's all a matter of opinion.

Boston has a dense skyline but for the third best skyline I do not htink that it wins. No way!
Also, NYC has the number one skyline in the country. The number of buildings, type of buildings, etc, etc! Just because not every building can be shown from a shot from the river does not mean that they are there and can be seen!

I guess maybe you were joking (if so, ignore this), but don't say things like that if you don't know what you're talking about. The skyline rankings on skyscrapers.com are calculated automatically based on the quantity and height of listed buildings in each city. Once the official criteria for judging were established, editors have no say in how the cities are ranked.
To accomplish this ranking, some standard had to be established. It had to be based on the number of buildings in a city and their height. An automatic calculator obviously can't rank skylines in the way that we are trying to do it... judging density, architecture, crown lighting...
So I agree that the skyscrapers.com rankings are not very useful for our discussion, but there's no intentional screwing around by the editors to change the order of the list.
zigzag December 26th, 2003, 04:45 PM Atlanta in top 10. IMO BTW, Houston is 3rd. IMO

FM 2258 January 26th, 2004, 09:52 AM It's either Houston L.A. or Atlanta because they each have a building over 1000 feet. We need to start building all skyscrapers over 1000 feet. These 500 feet to 800 feet buildings are getting booring.
I'm still waiting for someone or some place to build a building that tops 2000 feet. Not just with a spire but I want an actual office at 2000 feet.
New Jack City January 26th, 2004, 09:58 PM Well, I agree that an 1000 footer helps boost a skyline but I don't think the city with the third best skyline necessarily has to have a 1000 footer.
So these are the cities mentioned for the third best skyline?
Minneapolis
Seattle
LA
Atlanta
Houston
Boston
SF
Miami
Dallas
Pittsburgh
Boston
Philly
Anyone got any others they think could be thrown into the mix?
seapug January 29th, 2004, 11:14 AM i go for seattle pleasant to look at especcially on a foggy or rainy night. or anytime nice density colorfull. alos it has 12 over 500 your list did not inclued the space needle it is 605 ft tall while not really a building it is still part of the skyline, they are also building a 608 footer. also bay-area, i could take a pic of seattle where there were lots of people on the streets, yes sf is more densely populated, but a lot of that depends on what time of day you take the pic. seattle is getting denser though

I didn't include the Space Neddle since it was a observatory, not a high-rise. Same thing with the Reunion Tower in Dallas.

entropy January 31st, 2004, 10:51 PM skyscraper.com's "ranking":
14. Honolulu 378,155 266 km˛ 432 3,663
15. Houston 2,009,834 1,398 km˛ 319 3,582
20. Los Angeles 3,798,981 1,216 km˛ 395 2,804
26. Dallas 1,211,467 887 km˛ 219 2,334
28. Atlanta 424,868 341 km˛ 186 2,174
30. San Francisco 764,049 116 km˛ 272 2,052
31. Philadelphia 1,492,231 350 km˛ 307 1,947

36. Boston 589,281 125 km˛ 187 1,606
37. Miami 374,791 92 km˛ 171 1,510
50. Minneapolis 375,635 142 km˛ 167 1,204
Houston has the sheer # of major buildings, surprisingly enough despite its reputation for sprawl and being the #10th metro in the nation (though #4th city) that IMO would be the 3rd "greatest" but I think L.A.'s skyline balances better and has a more fitting signature skyscraper. Honolulu lacks truly tall skyscrapers and thus doesn't get my vote though it's ranked as 3rd highest.

Money Man February 2nd, 2004, 01:07 AM Here is my list. No particular order.
1. Houston
2. Los Angeles
3. San francisco
4. Boston
5. or Atlanta
These are the top five that I think should be the thrid largest skylines. It relly sucks that Los Angeles couldn't be the second largest just because of its stats in the country as taking second in many things.
TPX February 3rd, 2004, 01:41 AM Los Angeles - Great height and density. Seems to fit number three for me. Plus, LA has very unique architectue.
After LA:
4. Seattle
5. Philadelphia
6. Houston (too bland)
7. Minneapolis (I love it, but it isn't as big and dense as the others before it.
8. Atlanta
9. Dallas
10. San Francisco
I don't think Miami and Pittsburgh should be considered. Boston is dense, and it would be in my top 15 US skylines.

based on what? and second of all I do believe this was AFTER New York and Chicago. :colgate: Some of those cities in there should NOT even BE in there, like Atlanta which really has a bunch of the same looking buildigns with the spires on them over a very flat land...:baaa:
In all do respect, Seattle's pictures show the skyline to be much better than it actually is. In actuality, when you see the Seattle skyline in person, it looks rather small. Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas make Seattle look rather small. Sure, Seattle has got some density, but it simply has been made to look larger than it actually is.
james2390 February 4th, 2004, 06:28 AM Atlanta!! duh
J.A.C. February 7th, 2004, 08:24 AM hmmm....have you been to Seattle? I've been to Atlanta and know people that have moved here from Atlanta and could actually disagree with you on that. besides this isn't on "size" of skyline it's about beauty. In reality, Atlanta's skyline is the one that's been designed to look longer because of the fact that's so spread out, you have a tall building here and but no consistent density. I believe all these are subject to different points of view, therefore, I don't think that one should try to argue to prove that one is better than the other. Having said that...time to party I'm out of here :D

Yes, I have been to Seattle. From a distance, the skyline isn't much to brag about. Views from I-90 aren't that great, and the views from I-5 are only a little better. The best views of the Seattle Skyline definitely appear to be from the Space Needle or the Sound. Of course, I've seen the skyline from the sound, and I was still unimpressed. Maybe it was the whole Frasier thing, giving me unrealistic expectations. Overall, though, I found Seattle to be a very clean and nice city.
I'll agree with you that the Atlanta skyline is spreadout, but you also have to realize that this is more or less the result of several skylines growing together. The downtown skyline is dense. However, it's all subjective, I suppose in terms of what you like.
J.A.C. February 8th, 2004, 06:16 AM Yes everything is subjective. Personally, I don't think Atlanta is "dense" but of course it's all relative as well.
The views that are always breathtaking to me in Seattla are coming from Bellevue on I-90 and the 520, and then going back to Bellevue, also, West Seattle looking at downtown from accross the water, Queen Anne has the Best views and that's where Frasiers Condo tower would have to be to give you the views that tv portrayed to many viewers who are naive enough to believe everything they see on tv. Having said that, the rest of the views that IMO are awesome are when you're driving south on I-5 from the north into the city. Aurora Ave is awesome too and across from SLU, U-district has cool ones too...anyway..I could go on and on and on, but I have to go.
I like Atlanta's towers with their spires but I wish there weren't too many of them...
matthew_p2004 February 9th, 2004, 02:29 AM I would have to say Seattle. I went there with my family a few years ago and I thought it was one of the best in the country. I love the space needle too. Mount Ranier also makes it look cool :D
Minneapolis and LA also have great skylines :)
tocoto February 11th, 2004, 02:37 PM Boston is never considered seriously for this type of award. As this pictue shows though, its high rise area is extensive. The city is also vastly undercounted
by SS.com. It doesn't have a 1000 footer, but it has plenty of buildings over 500 feet, with more on the frawing board including the possibility
of a new tallest. It is one of the few cities in the US where you can actually be in one of several different high rise areas, each with
its own character. There are very few gaps in the built up area so the skyline changes as you go from place to place.
Even in this photo, the longwood area with a least 50 12+ story buildings is below the bottom of this picture.

samsonyuen February 24th, 2004, 04:01 PM LA
SF
Houston
after that, who the hell cares?
If we're including Canadian cities, number 4 has to go to Toronto. It's got the height, the variety, and the density. Vancouver's got nothing on TO!
medevil_kenivel February 24th, 2004, 11:07 PM I was not quite sure between minneapolis, seattle or la. but when i seen that la has that "westside" skyline i was sold.
After la its minneapolis then seattle.
Jerremyl February 27th, 2004, 02:12 PM I choose SEATTLE!!!
But I also like, San Francisco and Atlanta
Toshik March 3rd, 2004, 10:32 AM Bawstin beats most of the cities on the list, maybe except for S.F. and Seattle. Well, Minneapolis is nice too. So that's where my vote went.
And the only good thing about Houston downtown is that you can actually pahk your cah pretty much anywhere. Unlike in Bawstin.
M. Brown March 8th, 2004, 04:38 PM Im going to have to go for Seattle I think now.

james2390 March 16th, 2004, 04:27 AM Great photos, reason enough why Atlanta is my favorite:)
crunch March 16th, 2004, 04:57 AM I don't understand what's so special about Seattle's skyline. It's about as "cool" as Houston's. Dallas is pretty good, but really, Pittsburgh is one that has a very unique and rather uncommon skyline, as does Atlanta, for example
My ranking:
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
Dallas
Minneapolis
Houston
Atlanta
San Fransisco
Miami
Los Angeles
Seattle
Boston

8. Minneapolis
9. Houston
10. Pittsburgh
11. Miami
james2390 April 25th, 2004, 10:12 PM Minneapolis has an awesome skyline and all, but I don't feel it should be on here. I don't think its skyline is big or tall enough to be the best. Minneapolis has an awesome skyline though.
james2390 April 25th, 2004, 10:16 PM Same with Pittsburgh.
Toggie April 26th, 2004, 12:09 AM ohh yes that skyline tied for second shouldn't be here :sly:
JohnStreet January 10th, 2005, 09:25 PM Some of these cities have impressive buildings to conceal the fact that they have sad sad little downtown areas where no one lives.
Atlanta, Houston, and LA in particular.
If you like density, taxi cabs, subways, and hustle bustle, San Fran, Philly, and maybe Boston are the only logical choices.
JohnStreet January 10th, 2005, 10:36 PM Philly is also one of the largest cities to actually lose population in recent estimates.......while Houston has gained a little........doesn't make for a better skyline but possibly better liveability.......although everyone I talk to thinks Houston can be unbearable.......especially in the hot & humid summers -- as far as skyline is concerned philly over houston anytime though.........
The city of Houston is made out of suburbs and is geographically MUCH larger than Philadelphia. You can drive your Expedition from your ranch home to the nearby Home Depot and Walmart, and still be within City limits.
The actual city of Philadelphia is dense, crowded, noisy, often dirty, but it rocks.
Our nearby "suburbs" such as Conshohocken/King of Prussia/Mainline are actually not within city limits.
