It's nice to see progress, but part of me is sad to see all of the old Woolworth's gone (or Woolies, as they were sometimes called). I have fond memories of sitting at the lunch counter, and drinking my favourite beverage.. grape drink over crushed ice in a cone shaped paper cup, in one of those plastic cup holders. Now THAT was LIVING!!!! Probably had a hot dog, or a BLT, or maybe even a burger, too!

It's been nearly 20 years since the Lister Block had any power. Soon the building will be open for the general public to tour.

The Lister Block looks beautifully restored. Congrats to Hamilton for getting its landmark back.

Lister Block building

The Lister Block, first built in 1886, was destroyed by fire in 1923 and the second building was erected in 1924. This Classic Renaissance building is 32,000 square feet (3,000 m2) with Six floors and sits on the corner of James and King William Street. The original building built in 1886 only had Four floors. It was the first indoor commercial mall in Canada[8] and is currently owned by LIUNA- Laborers' International Union of North America.[13] The building one time was also home for the local Oldies 1150 CKOC radio station which has been on the air since May 1, 1922 and as of the year 2000 is the oldest radio station in English Canada, second oldest overall.[14][15]

The Lister Block is named for Joseph Lister, the original owner, who was a merchant, clothier, member of the city's Board of Water Commissioners and school trustee. His goal was to build a "most modern and central accommodation" for small merchants at modest rent.[1]

It was the centre of community life in Hamilton for much of the last century. It was built with excellent materials and workmanship during prosperous times in the city before stock markets crashed in 1929. One of the few buildings of its type in Ontario west of Toronto. Its style is more frequently seen in American Great Lakes cities.[13]

I also didn't know that about CKOC either, but it's a shat station anyway.

That's beautiful! Coarchitecture has done a lot of nice work around the province. They submitted a nice design for the new St-Laurent sports complex but Saucier + Perrotte won out in the end.

I agree. Woolworth's always had bins of broken chocolate that could be had for next to nothing. The lunch counter was classic!

I remember the bins of broken chocolate; also they had bins of roughly cut squares of "sponge taffy". Looks like an orange sponge, but was hard and tasted of burnt sugar!

The Bow is almost complete.

It looks good even with the cheapening of the design.

The first phase of the Cité Verte (Green City) project is almost completed. For this first part of the $300M project, SSQ transformed what used to be an orphanage (38 000 orphans were born there between 1901 and 1972) into the first units of what will become a so-called "green neighbourhood". When completed, the entire project will offer 800 habitation units ranging from condos and appartments to townhouses and social housing. Some 70 000 s.f. of commercial space will also be available and will include a pharmacy and a medical clinic. Residents will have access to a gym, an inside pool, a park and a community garden. Roads will be few and narrow and pedestrians will have priority. Most parking spaces will be underground and charging points for electric vehicules will be put in place.

The neighbourhood will get its electricity from a newly built biomass power plant and from solar power. Green roofs will be mandatory and higher quality construction materials will have to come from local producers to diminish the carbon footprint. Rain water will be collected in retention reservoirs not only to provide water but aslo to prevent this clean water from ending up in the sewer system and thus be unnecessarily treated at a municipal water treatment facilitiy. Each unit will be equiped with a screen which will inform the owner of his water and electricity consumption.

"The automated waste collection system installed in “La Cité Verte” consists of a system of underground pipes that will connect directly to 3 types of waste drop-off points for organic waste, recyclables and all other waste. A massive vacuum of 20-30 kilopascal of pressure is created to suck the waste into a local “substation” where organic waste is generally turned into biogas, recyclables are processed and other waste is incinerated to produce electricity or heat."

I'm really impressed with what's been happening in Quebec City lately. I didn't expect much development news from this city or Winnipeg, but both keep providing a steady stream of proposals. They're good ones too. It's nice that it's not all Toronto, but that growth is occurring in all parts of Canada.

Construction of the following building is almost completed. Not the biggest of projects but still, its architecture is interesting. It will be a huge Harley Davidson dealership. I'm not sure if I like it but I appreciate the fact that the owner decided to do something bold instead of playing it safe by building a plain box. Before it is completed, a black steel mesh will be attached on the surface of the building:

The main branch of Caisse Desjardins situated in Lévis will move in this new building later this year. It will seek a LEED Gold Standard (geothermal heating, etc). Desjardins really seems to be sprucing up its branches quite nicely nowadays.
