Due to be finished 2011-2012.
From the website:
Overview of the Museum
The Grand Egyptian Museum is currently one of the largest museum development projects in the world. Given the global interest in Pharaonic history, people everywhere are eagerly anticipating the arrival of this new cultural destination. Given also the importance of cultural tourism to the Egyptian economy, the GEM is a priority to Egypt and its people on different levels, human, governmental, financial, and public sector support that will make it a popular, academic and cultural institution of the highest international standing's, housing one of the most ancient treasures of humanity that belongs to the world heritage.
The museum is located over 117faddans approx. 480,000sq m, 2.5 km away from the legendary Pyramids of Giza, the plateau that is nominated in the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage Sites. It acts at the intersection between Modernity and Antiquity, literally redirecting the traveler from the modernity of Cairo and Alexandria to the Ancient Heritage of the Egyptians which goes back to over 5000 years of civilization.
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is located in Al-Remayah Square, near the Pyramids of Giza, on a 48-hectare site overlooking the pyramids. It will be an international centre of Egyptology with conservation resources, educational and research facilities, conference and seminar facilities, all immediately adjacent to the world’s greatest collection of Egyptian artefacts and within easy access of the monuments created by that renowned civilisation. It is also targeted to be a public cultural facility with parks and gardens that tell the story of Egypt through another point of view, that of the land of the Nile.
The project comprises 3 phases:
Phase I
-The scope of enabling works to the GEM site.
Phase II
Conservation and energy centre (CEC) with a total area of 18,000 m². The scope of Phase II is the construction of the following:
-Conservation centre
-Conservation plant
-Main energy centre (shell + core)
-Fire station
-Adjacent section of main service and artefacts tunnel (15-30 m beyond conservation centre)
-Conservation centre service yard
-Associated landscaping and necessary modifications to perimeter road
Phase III
The scope of Phase III is the construction of the following:
-Main building (museum and conference centre)
-Manager’s residence
-Fit-out of main energy centre
-Completion of tunnels between Phase II and the main building
-Restaurant
-Site structures outside the boundary of Phase II
-Landscaping, site work and infrastructure outside the boundary of Phase II

whizz_pat May 20th, 2009, 06:02 AM The statue of Ramses makes it more than just a Dubai project. It adds thousands of years of history. Something Dubai will never have.

whizz_pat May 21st, 2009, 07:14 AM Wow nice pics midotoria. Do you have any in higher resolution?
Cartel May 21st, 2009, 11:30 AM This is such a huge and impressive project. Are they moving the Ramses statue from next to the railway station?? I liked it there..
whizz_pat May 21st, 2009, 01:21 PM ^^
Yeah I think they moved it back in 2006.
Apparently it was exposed to too much pollution, noise, and ground vibration due to cars and trains.
UAE_isthebest May 21st, 2009, 03:35 PM I really like the "old" museum but this one is so much better I really like it! If this museum is done I'm going to visit it. :)
Gulivar May 21st, 2009, 10:40 PM Very nice!

That first render sure puts the scale of the project into proper perspective.
eskandarany June 15th, 2009, 11:57 PM I love this - this project and the cairo metro both need to be finished ASAP they are essentials and money-makers for the city. Egypt has the potential, we need to exploit it
Qatar Son 333 July 12th, 2009, 11:52 PM Nice work guys, Thanks Whizz_pat for tha thread and thanks for other contributers over here...
I only came to know about the project days ago when i was going to carrefour (Dandy megamall), i saw an old billboard with the project on it, i was shocked as this is the first time i see this project, i passed by this road last year and the year before and didnt see the sign till now... in my opinion its 1000 times better than the old museum.
here is a picture taken from the website
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8405/49181172.jpg (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/49181172.jpg/)
notice how it is placed in relation to the position of the pyramids..
This is the future of the EGYPTIAN civilisation
will we live to see the next generation studying, reading, and speaking ancient egyptian ? Hebrew which is 3000 years old have been restored to a common language again in Israel. why cant Ancient egyptian return which is only 2000 years older than hebrew, loads of egyptologists have translated it, but its time to go large scale and RESTORE this marvelous civilisation, we dont need to follow the religions of the ancient egyptians and their "fake?" gods.. we will stay worshiping our one and only all mighty Allah for both Muslim and Christian Egyptians.
Sorry for speaking so much, its just that i really love Egypt, for tha past 3 years every summer i wake up to see the pyramids from our balcony... there is just too much to ignore !
Thanks for reading

Thanks so much man! Mashallah already contributing! Egypt loves you more! :) Pretty interesting those statistics you got about hebrew, personally i wouldn't mind speaking Ancient Egyptian, it sounds nice, but I doubt it would ever happen.

egypt69 August 13th, 2009, 04:25 PM Tender for the Grand Egyptian Museum management to commence
CAIRO: Negotiations are underway between the contractors of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Mohamed Ghonim, one of the top executives heading the project, expects that “the contracting will finish at the end of this month” after which, tendering for its management contract will begin.
The entire project is being overseen by the Ministry of Culture, while the Supreme Council of Antiquities plays a fundamental role in managing the cultural and archaeological aspects of the project.
A government investment plan, fundraising campaigns and foreign state grants all contribute to the financing of this project, as well as assistance from international organizations and agencies amongst other sources and individual donations.
The museum, which will be located 2.5 km away from the Giza Pyramids, is projected to be completed by 2013.
Upon completion, the venture, which is estimated to cost $550 million (LE 3 billion), will employ 500 members of well-trained staff as well as an additional 1,500 employees from the service sector for security and maintenance.
Visitor numbers are estimated to start at 3 million in the first year and according to the Grand Egyptian Museum’s website, the number of artifacts that the museum will host will rise up to 100,000 during the first five to 10 years.
Once opened, the museum will boast a collection of artifacts some 3,500 pieces strong that once belonged to the young Tutankhamun. The museum will guide its visitors through the country’s history, starting from the first period of Ancient Egypt, running in chronological order throughout the pharonic times. It is also projected to be the largest museum of Egyptology in the world with a floor space of 100,000 meters square.
In 2003, a competition was held with the aim of finding a designer for the building. The final design of the Grand Egyptian Museum was created by the winners of this competition, a company called Heneghan Peng from Dublin, Ireland.
In addition to the main building, which will contain five cafés and restaurants, the Grand Egyptian Museum will host six different gardens and parks that will represent Egypt.
Latest reports estimate the construction of the museum to be completed in 2013.

whizz_pat December 6th, 2009, 10:25 AM Not sure if Google Earth would work. It isn't live, and is updated once every couple of years or so.
xAbd0o December 6th, 2009, 02:13 PM ^^ every year, so we should have good view in 2010 :d
egypt69 December 6th, 2009, 07:15 PM Yeah when Google Earth 2010 comes out, we'll have updates for all the projects.
LordMarshall December 9th, 2009, 02:30 AM just read an article on the BBC which mentions the GEM, wonderful project... a great way to show off the rich history of Egypt
Jmarius December 9th, 2009, 02:58 AM Wooow look great. I was in Cairo and Alexandri last year I was one of the mos wonderfull experience... Egypt is great !!!!
egypt69 December 9th, 2009, 04:40 AM Thankyou both for your kind words :)
xAbd0o December 9th, 2009, 05:36 PM Thanks for your cheerful posts guy, and Jmarius I hope you enjoyed it and it's aint the last time :P
BigDreamer December 11th, 2009, 08:51 AM OMG this is soo exciting !! I can't believe i just found out about this..
I actually felt sad about the state of the existing museum when I visited a couple of years back.. But with this project, Egypt will be the envy of Europe !
egypt69 December 11th, 2009, 11:03 PM Thanks :) COme back and visit when this is complete ;)
BigDreamer December 12th, 2009, 01:20 AM ^^ I certainly will  There is so much to see in Egypt, it's impossible to do it in one or two visits lol
I'm glad to see this project progressing, Egypt has a magnificent civilization that deserves a first class museum. All MENA countries that i've visted lack a grand modern museum to exhibit their civilisation and culture.. A museum like this will be a big hit with tourists, and it will strengthen the Egyptian demand to return artifacts back home to Egypt (where they rightfully belong)
egypt69 December 12th, 2009, 01:45 AM yeah, i totally agree. I would prefer this kind of project over a new mall or tower. Preserving culure and heritage is very important, and having projects like these does just that.
whizz_pat December 12th, 2009, 01:47 AM ^^
Agreed with egypt69 and bigdreamer. A new mall would only symbolise how much Egypt is America's bitch. A museum on the other hand...
egypt69 December 12th, 2009, 05:20 AM
egypt69 December 12th, 2009, 05:21 AM Not that im against the construction of malls or anything, its just that museums etc. preserve culture and heritage and have much more reward for the country..
xAbd0o December 12th, 2009, 01:51 PM Yeah it's just matter of speaking about priorities.
Private Eye December 13th, 2009, 04:09 PM I hate to be going against popular opinion here, but I don't know about this design. I'm not a big fan of these new contemporary modern buildings and I wish it had a more classical look. That's the same reason why I didn't like the design of the new Athens acropolis museum too.
Still, I prefer this design:

over this one:

What was the inspiration for this exactly? It kind of looks like a giant flyswatter. I don't even know what those wires are.
Other than that, I'm sure the facilities inside are going to be first-rate.:)

flyswatter ?!
I dunno, it looks more like an electric guitar to me lol
I like the design i think it's great :)
xAbd0o December 17th, 2009, 04:07 PM  I never thougth about that but it look pretty much like a electric guitar, and Private Eye that was funny gusse :P but yeah it look a bit like flyswatter too :P
Chevre December 23rd, 2009, 02:47 PM Amazing renders!!! I love the design!! An amazing project for Egypt!!

karimmansour92 January 22nd, 2010, 06:45 PM hey guys... i found this article on Zahi Hawass's site... it's quite interesting... unfortunately... i can't find the date it was posted...
Last Thursday I visited the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) to view the progress of the construction of this important new museum for Egyptian antiquities.
The amazing thing about this building is how modern the design is, and its location next to the Giza plateau, with the pyramids in the background; the museum will be facing the light with an incredible view. The GEM will be a beautiful space in which visitors can experience the art and artifacts of ancient Egypt in the shadow of the pyramids.
Phase 1 of the construction was finished some time ago, and the recently completed Phase 2 includes the building of the conservation labs, energy center, and fire station. This museum now boasts perhaps the largest museum conservation labs anywhere in the world. There is nothing comparable to the size of the storage areas and the laboratories. The storage rooms have tall, movable shelves designed for secure storage and easy access of artifacts. Storage facilities will also have carefully regulated environmental controls with different sections for different types of material, for example organic or non-organic material, or low temperature storage.
The conservation labs contain state of the art equipment for the preservation and restoration of artifacts, to make this one of the best conservation labs in the world. The Conservation Center is built 10 meters below street level so that it will blend into the natural environment as well as improve security. We are planning now to move some objects chosen from the Cairo Museum to the new lab for conservation and restoration. This way, the objects will be ready to be installed in the museum when it is completed.
On Thursday, I visited with the Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, to view the construction, and hold a press conference to announce the status of the project. I saw the beautiful state of the labs, they are very clean and modern, and I was impressed by the outcome of this project. The Minister and I held a press conference in the museum, where we showed a video of the history of the construction and then answered questions about the plan for the museum.
The company that will administrate the whole project has been chosen, and will shortly begin construction of the main building. We hope that this Grand Egyptian Museum will be completed three years from now, and I think the world will be very impressed when this grand museum will be unveiled.
After the press conference, we travelled to Giza to check on the progress of the site management program. The antiquities offices that we built at the base of the plateau are almost finished. Soon we will remove the old buildings on the plateau, and begin using the new offices. I plan to use my new office at Giza a few days a week, because from this office I will be able to see the Great Pyramid every day.
We also viewed the progress of the new road for electric cars. Over 90% of the road has been completed; soon when people visit Giza, they will park outside the site and ride in these electric cars to the pyramids. This will protect the monuments from the harmful effects of automobile traffic and also make visiting the site more enjoyable for tourists. We are also working on the new visitor center in front of the third pyramid, which will provide a good introduction to the site and have fun educational experiences for children. When the project is finished, visitors will be able to see the site without being bothered by people offering horse and camel rides. I have also appointed a team to begin a new project for site management in the area in front of the Sphinx. I am very happy that these projects, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the site management plan at Giza, will show the world how Egypt cares for its history.

Its best to post the entire article, as well as providing a link.
Fantastic Article Karim, you've been doing great work updating us on all the projects
I am very very proud of this project. The article mentions so many things, this museum will be out of this world.
The Electric Cars for the pyramids look great, and i am SO happy to hear that they will put an end to the probelm of the "camel offerers" and those merchants, and sellers that annoy all the tourists. I hate them, they give us such a bad image. Everytime I talk to a foreigner who visits Egypt, this is the biggest complain they have, all the Baksheesh and begging that goes on, its really shameful and embarassing, and I hope they'll stop it as they say they will.
Sherif207 January 22nd, 2010, 11:46 PM Impressive, I've been waiting for the day they cleaned up the area around the pyramids, and adding electric transportation, makes it that much better! I'm happy with the direction Egypt is moving in.
po-boy January 28th, 2010, 11:24 PM Neat stuff. I have always wanted to visit Egypt and this incredible new museum is just one more incentive.

http://www.ahram.org.eg/MediaFiles//I1S_14_2_2010_19_22.jpg

It is indeed impressive and pharaonic in scale! But currently the biggest Meseum complex is the Smithsonian institution:
The Smithsonian Institution (pronounced /smɪθˈsoʊniən/) is an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its retail operations, concessions, licensing activities and magazines. Most of its facilities are located in Washington, D.C., but its 19 museums, zoo, and nine research centers include sites in New York City, Virginia, Panama, and elsewhere (see below). It has over 136 million items in its collections,[1] publishes two magazines named Smithsonian (monthly) and Air & Space (bimonthly), and employs the Smithsonian Police to protect visitors, staff, and the property of the museums. The Institution's current logo is a stylized sun.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithsonian_Institution
But again it is not a single museum but rather a complex! :)
xAbd0o May 26th, 2010, 04:53 PM ^^ well you see this is still under construction. but I still don't know if it's going to be the biggest as they refereed to in the article maybe the biggest in Egypt that is understandable but the biggest in the world huh?

Grand Egyptian Museum Park
The project, which is supported by UNESCO, involves building a 600-metre-long museum in the flank of the plateau of Giza. Following the competition for this new Grand Egyptian Museum, West 8 joined the winning architectural team to refine the concept of the museum, to prepare a design for the garden and to develop a master plan for the museums environment in relation to the pyramids of Giza.
egypt69 June 6th, 2010, 01:35 AM Wow, that new render is quite different. A good insight, Can't wait for this project.

egypt69 June 15th, 2010, 01:16 AM Initial stages of new Egypt museum completed
CAIRO — Egypt's massive new museum for its famous antiquities now has a power plant, a fire station and its own conservation center, and over the next two years it will become home to some 100,000 artifacts, officials said Monday.
A partial opening for the 120-acre museum complex, which will house King Tutankhamun's famed mummy and golden burial effects and a replica of his tomb, is set for the fall of 2012.
Plans for the museum, which will replace the century-old building visited by millions annually in Cairo's heaving downtown, were first conceived in 2002 and it will display more than twice as many artifacts as its predecessor.
The museum will eventually house 100,000 artifacts, said Mohammed Ghoneim, the project's technical consultant said. Tens of thousands of artifacts are currently locked away unseen in the old museum due to lack of space to display them.
Egypt's first lady Suzanne Mubarak on Monday inaugurated the first two phases of the $600 million Grand Museum of Egypt, which is located at the foot of the Giza pyramids.
The main achievement so far is the construction of the new conservation center to restore damaged antiquities and already 122 conservators are restoring and preparing 6,800 artifacts that will one day be showcased in the Grand Museum.
A documentation unit is also working to create a computerized database for all the artifacts.
The conservation center is "designed to be the largest such center in the world, in terms of the services it offers and the number of laboratories," Ghoneim said. "It is built to restore Egyptian antiquities but also to be a regional conservation center."
Established with Japanese technical assistance, the center includes 12 laboratories for restoring, scanning and studying mummies as well as artifacts made from pottery, wood, textiles and glass. Staff are also receiving training in Japan.
Shadia Kinawi, the head of the committee overseeing the museum, said Japan has provided a $300 million loan for the museum, while the Egyptian culture ministry will provide $150 million.
Some $27 million were donated to the museum, she said. Over 30 firms have already submitted tenders for building the main galleries of the museum.

egypt69 June 15th, 2010, 09:30 PM There is no way int he world that is the new design, the architects were confirmed, and earlier construction updates show they were following the original design.
Its gonna be the same beautiful design we always had :)
the_egyptian June 16th, 2010, 12:44 PM They talked a lot about the museum in Masrelnahrda yesterday.
The guy said that it will be the first "electronic museum" in the world.
He confirmed that it is the biggest in the world in terms of area (743,400 m sq) and artifacts.
On the fourth floor, you can watch the pyramids in a panoramic style as if it is one of the artifacts shown in the museum. He said that they will launch a fund raising campaign all around the globe. The opening is confirmed also, that is 26 months from now.
He said a lot of things. You can check yesterday's episode at Masr El Nahrda (www.masrelnahrda.net)
xAbd0o June 16th, 2010, 12:48 PM Great. sadly I missed yesterday's episode :( Thanks for the link I will watch it. and BTW I got the article from there website
xAbd0o July 13th, 2010, 04:45 PM Firms vie to build Egypt's $550 mln pharaonic museum
CAIRO July 12 (Reuters) - Fourty companies are vying to build the final phase of Egypt's new $550 million museum which will showcase the largest collection of pharaonic treasures in the world, the project's supervisor said on Monday.
These firms submitted pre-bid documents for the main construction phase of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which will span 117 acres overlooking the great pyramids of Giza and will exhibit 100,000 artefacts.
"The Ministry of Culture called for companies to submit prequalification documents for this Grand Museum project," Mohamed Ghoneim, the project's supervisor, said by telephone. "Fourty companies submitted documents yesterday."
The museum will include lavish gardens copying pharaonic designs, galleries and an archaeological research centre.
Thousands of ancient artefacts are already on display at the main museum in downtown Cairo, but more are boxed away in storage and new finds are dug up each year, so Egypt is building new museums across the country to showcase these treasures as it strives to attract more foreign visitors.
Egypt's Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) and its subsidiary BESIX Group have jointly submitted pre-bid documents, while other bidders include state-owned Arab Contractors and Spain's Obrascon Huarte Lain , Egyptian newspaper al-Mal reported on Monday. OCI declined to comment.
Egypt's Ministry of Culture, which spearheads the project, will announce a bid short-list in two months, al-Mal said.
At the launch of the third and final construction phase in February, the Ministry said $300 million of the museum's cost would be funded through a Japanese loan, without giving more details, with the rest financed by the Egyptian government.
In February, a joint venture between U.S.-based Hill International and EHAF Consulting Engineers won a five-year, $50 million contract to manage the design and construction of the museum's final phase. Egypt is aiming to bring in $13 billion in tourism revenue in the full year 2010. Tourism accounts for about 11 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and provides about one in eight jobs in Egypt.
The global economic crisis hit Egypt's tourist industry last year, with visitor numbers falling to 12.5 million from 12.8 million in 2008, while revenues slipped to $10.8 billion from about $11 billion.
Egypt said last week earnings from tourism surged in the first half of 2010.
OCI shares ended 1.7 percent lower, tracking index .EGX30 losses. (Reporting by Marwa Awad; editing by Matt Smith and Samia Nakhoul)

xAbd0o August 4th, 2010, 12:46 AM Interesting article about the museum.
4000 Years After The Pyramids, Egypt Builds A New Landmark
CAIRO (Zawya Dow Jones)--More than 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians left their mark on the world when they built the Giza pyramids. Today, Egypt is about to start construction of another landmark, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the world's largest Pharaonic museum.
Within weeks, local authorities will award contracts to build the long-awaited, estimated $500 million museum, which will be located near the pyramids on the Giza plateau on the outskirts of Cairo. Covering an area of about 180,000 square meters--equivalent to about 25 football pitches--the museum will be a spectacular addition to the country's already long list of tourist attractions.
"The design of the museum and the way artifacts will be displayed will give rise to a new era of tourism in Egypt," said Waleed Abdel Fattah, North Africa vice president at Hill International Inc. (HIL), the New York-listed construction management firm that manages and supervises the museum construction in a joint venture with EHAF Consulting Engineers.
Egypt, the most populous Arab country, hopes the project will provide a boost for the local tourism industry, which accounts for roughly 11% of gross domestic product. Higher revenues from tourist spending in turn would help narrow the country's budget deficit, which reached 7.2% in May.
"The project is a profit center. It will generate great revenues, if the market strategy is done well," said Abdel Fattah.
Work on the project's site is due to start by the first quarter of 2011, with the museum scheduled to open its doors to visitors for the first time by 2013. The project's final stage will be completed within two years from the initial opening.
Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects of Ireland, the Grand Egyptian Museum will have capacity for 15,000 visitors a day, or more than 5 million visitors per year, which is almost half of the 12 million tourists who visited Egypt in 2009.
EXPENSIVE
With a price tag of $500 million, the museum will be one of the country's most expensive tourism projects ever. Financing has been secured in the form of soft loans from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, or JBIC, which is providing about $350 million, while the remainder will come from the Egyptian government, including the Ministry of Culture and the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Hill earlier in July received responses from about 10 groups of companies seeking prequalification to bid for the contract to build the museum building, the exhibition halls and carry out external building works. The local Orascom Construction Industries along with Besix Group--Belgium's largest construction group--and Dubai's Arabtec Holding are among those competing for the contract, according to Hill.
The plans to build the museum are going ahead at a time when world economies continue to struggle with the fallout from the global financial crisis. But the timing of the project is still good, Abdel Fattah said.
"Somehow the timing is good. Two years ago, we would have had higher building prices. Also, contractors now have a bigger appetite for work," he said.
The new museum, which will also house the Tutankhamun collection, will contrast sharply with Cairo's existing museum, which was built in 1902 at the heart of the city's throbbing downtown area. The old museum, which is known for its disorganization, has around 200,000 artifacts lying around in the basement. A couple of years ago, 38 pieces of jewelry from the Roman period went missing, highlighting the need to keep a record of the stored artifacts.
"What is special about the project is the amount of artifacts displayed. There is no museum worldwide that has this amount of artifacts," said Shadia Kenawy, chairman of the executive committee for project implementation at Egypt's Ministry of Culture.
Of the museum's 100,000 artifacts, 50,000 will be displayed, with the other 50,000 to be used for training purposes, Kenawy said, adding that a planned local training center was eventually to become a global training center.
"Cairo needs a lot of different types of museums. The Grand Museum will help make Cairo the world city it deserves to be," said Mounir Soliman, president of Environmental Quality International.

egypt69 August 9th, 2010, 10:54 PM Grand Egyptian Museum Opening Brought Forward to 2012 as Contractors Sign New Deal
http://heritage-key.com/HKimages/002/gem-coming-soon.jpg
Mid-2012 was confirmed last week as the projected point of opening for the Grand Egyptian Museum, as pen was put to paper on a deal between the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) and engineering firms Hill International and EHAF Consulting Engineers to commence work on stage three of Egypt’s new cultural mecca.
Egyptian culture minister Farouk Hosni looked on as Dr Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the SCA, and Raouf Ghali, board chairman of Hill International, signed the deal. Hosni stated that it will take 26 months to complete the massive building project, in the desert west of Cairo at Giza, just two kilometres from the pyramids.
With 100,000 square metres of floor space and provision for as many as 100,000 artefacts, the $550 million Grand Egyptian Museum will be the biggest cultural project in the world, according to Hosni, who called it a “cultural high dam
As many as 4.8 million tourists are expected to visit every year, to see exhibits such as Howard Carter’s Tutankhamun collection.
Previous estimates had put the opening date for the Grand Egyptian Museum – the foundation stone for which was laid in 2002, ten years after the project was officially announced – sometime in 2013. Egyptians, living in a country where tourism accounts for 11% of GDP, will welcome the slightly accelerated timetable for the visionary structure, which is already being heralded as “Egypt’s fourth pyramid.”

Montrealers August 10th, 2010, 12:27 AM Wow, why didn't they build in another city than Cairo? I mean, the capital have too much museum, why they don't build it in another city than the huge one. It could have growed the economy of Egypt.
egypt69 August 10th, 2010, 12:55 AM The whole point was to have the museum next to the iconic pyramids, the pyramids are located in Cairo. If they were in Alexandria, im sure the museum wouldve been built there instead ;)
VelesHomais August 10th, 2010, 01:16 AM Very impressive museum
City of Rain August 14th, 2010, 06:29 PM looks incredible..
i was in cairo in february and went to the current museum, it was nice :)
though i found the city itself extremely gritty and impressive in a rather negative way (im sure you all know what i mean, if youve been to cairo), i really want to go back.. there is something about all that grittyness that attracts me :)
this museum means i have to go back no matter what.. congrats to cairo!
whizz_pat August 17th, 2010, 02:53 AM ^^
Thanks mate. We are all looking forward to the new museum.
Does anyone know what will become of the existing museum?
xAbd0o August 17th, 2010, 03:05 AM what museum you talking about? you mean Cairo Museum? if so then I don't think they would do anything with it. it will stay as it is another museum in Egypt. I am sure they renovated it recently so I doubt anything special although this museum will be done in 2012 so by them they might have a complete renovation plan for Cairo museum.
whizz_pat August 17th, 2010, 03:22 AM Ah that clears things up. But then the Cairo Museum would be left emptier than it is now, with the transfer of antiques to the new museum in Giza?
xAbd0o August 17th, 2010, 03:26 AM I don't know. but to what I understand they will keep all the antiques in Cairo museum.
and in the storage room they have huge number of antiques which will be moved to this grand museum.
and I am sure they'd move the important pieces to this museum too.

xAbd0o October 7th, 2010, 12:47 AM It's late 2012 construction work will be done but it will be open for us by 2013. you still need to train the labour force in the new facilities before opening it right?

Azmat June 6th, 2011, 06:50 PM Japanese govt loans Egypt LE300 million to complete Grand Egyptian Museum
The Japanese Government granted Egypt a LE300 million loan to complete the last phase of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in a deal signed Thursday, according to Antiquities Minister Zahi Hawass.
During the signing of the deal with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Hawass said that construction work would begin in mid November and is scheduled to be completed by March 2015.
The loan will be paid back over a period of 30 years at a 5 percent interest rate.
Hawass said the museum will be one of the largest museums in the world and will feature 100,000 artifacts, half of which are being held in museum storage rooms nationwide.
He went on to say that a statue of King Tut would be the main attraction, including a number of artifacts from the Egyptian Museum that will be transferred to the GEM when it is completed.
Hawass added that the government, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, spent nearly US$100 million on storage rooms and a renovation center for the GEM, which was funded by revenues from museum exhibition abroad.

On different news,
Grand Egyptian Museum final phase construction to begin
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Egypt has received a grant of LE300 million ($50.4 million) loan from the Japanese Government for completion of the final phase.
GEM is designed to provide an Egyptology centre of excellence for the next 100 years and will be sited near the pyramids of Giza. Arup is working on the design of the museum as part of a joint venture after winning an international architectural competition.
The museum will occupy a 50-acre site and will feature a translucent stone wall that will be 800m long. The wall will rise to 40m, allowing visitors to explore the sheltered space. Illuminated by the dramatic lighting schemes of the main building, the wall will add night-time drama to the desert landscape.
The main building will house the museum and a conference centre, connected by a large shaded courtyard and a exhibition space with 800-seat auditorium. The new building will house a restaurant, ticketing facilities and other services. On a separate part of the site, the conservation and energy centre will house special laboratories for cleaning, cataloguing and restoring artefacts.
The statue of King Tut would be the main attraction, including a number of artifacts from the Egyptian Museum that will be transferred to the GEM once the development is completed. Soft landscaping will provide outdoor leisure areas with internal circulation and access roads winding between them.
The museum will feature 100,000 artifacts with the government to spend $100 million on storage rooms and a renovation center for the GEM. Construction work would begin in mid-November 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2015.

lol wasn't it supposed to be completed by 2012?
I think it is a great idea but what will happen to the Egyptian Museum?
Gd even museums seem to be moving to the suburbs - at this rate the life and activity in central Cairo will diminish and the downtown is "urban", whereas I am not that at ease with all these developments in the outskirts.
I believe the Egyptian Museum should have stayed where it is - for Giza it might be closer to visit, but for the average Cairenne to move to the Pyramids in order to visit the museum will become a pain.
They should have made an extension in the area they are building now in Tahrir- plus the Egyptian Museum has such a grand charm.
You can imagine Indiana Jones to come anytime dressed as an Oxford scholar in the 30s!
xAbd0o February 20th, 2013, 12:22 PM Phase 1 and 2 has been completed last year. It's phase 3 that'll be completed in 2015. That's the actual Museum.
Azmat February 20th, 2013, 01:06 PM I think they moved Tutankhamun's stuff to the new museum already.
xAbd0o February 20th, 2013, 01:20 PM Yea to phase 1 and 2, the storage and lab I think.
OnceBittenTwiceShy February 20th, 2013, 10:14 PM Gd even museums seem to be moving to the suburbs - at this rate the life and activity in central Cairo will diminish and the downtown is "urban", whereas I am not that at ease with all these developments in the outskirts.
The location of the present museum is an absolute nightmare from an infrastructural and logistical point of view. Its relocation is beneficial, shall have no negative effect whatsoever on 'life and activity in central Cairo' and shall not contribute to 'an urban feel'.
I believe the Egyptian Museum should have stayed where it is
The museum is an absolute disgrace, conjuring visions of an ill-lit, gloomy and stodgy warehouse with artefacts tucked away in dark corners. It doesn't do justice to the hundreds of thousands of precious items, rotting and stacked away in poorly ventilated storage rooms in the basement.
- for Giza it might be closer to visit, but for the average Cairenne to move to the Pyramids in order to visit the museum will become a pain.
As if an average Cairene Ahmed Nos-Nos could care.
MIBO February 21st, 2013, 08:14 AM ^^ Well I have to admit that all your points are right.
The Egyptian Museum could have just been upgraded and modernized - that is really not that much the problem.
The problem is mainly the access to the Museum - regardless of how you do it you need to "survive crossing the streets" and most of them are pretty massive
For Egyptians it might not be an issue but for let's say...independent Japanese tourists? A very stressful thing.
Btw, what will happen to the building which used to belong to Mubarak's party and which was burned down?
Awwww I miss Cairo :(
xAbd0o February 21st, 2013, 11:36 AM They still own them, it's their call to either renovate them or sell them. unless a court order states that they're not rightfully owned by the NDP.

Rockbottom ignorance. Let me have an educated guess; you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Allow me to educate you on elementary basics only.
Tahrir is congested and clogged to such an extent it couldn’t even cope with the truck loads of supply and discharge of debris and old and new building materials.
Refurbishing and modernizing the museum would require temporary closure.
Gradually renovating would considerably diminish displaying areas. It would mean temporarily re-allocating and storing pieces of thousands of tons of weight elsewhere. Not to mention the numbers.
It would imply extensive and time-consuming travelling on a daily basis from hundreds, if not thousands of workers, to and from a building site in the most congested area of the city.
I shall not go into detail about the colossal financing and fragile sustainability of a revamped warehouse in the heart of the city.
There is no room for required extensions.
And that is only just for starters. And you claim 'that is really not that much the problem'.

Pardon the expression, but you have no clue whatsoever. One doesn’t need to cross the street or Tahrir square to gain access to the museum. Tourists are off-loaded from their coaches right in front of the museum on a designated parking lot.
MIBO February 21st, 2013, 11:40 PM ^^ With all due respect - no need for patronizing.
What you say doesn't mean that it can't be done, it would only be more complicated. Period.
And the problem you are talking about are more because on congestion than the traffic itself - room, there is room for expansion renovating the whole area which will have to be done sooner or later because of the congestion you mentioned.
And, what part of independent tourists you don't understand? I refered to them - I know perfectly that others go in organized transportation. I talk about independent tourists - because I did not go with any organized tour, like most Egyptians visiting the Museum.
I am no expert in architecture and urbanism - so I guess I am an ignorant - not very polite to call that to someone however.
My opinion is only based on the many times I visited Cairo and the Museum and my preference for dense urban environment as opposed to L.A-replicas.

I much prefer to browse than post, but your patronizing tone is misplaced, your opinions misguided, and you need to be checked. First of all, Tahrir, being the center point of the metro, is in no way, shape, or form a logistical or infrastructure nightmare. Most great museums, such as the Louvre, the Met, and the British Museum, are in the town centre. Secondly, one of the main problems with the museum is that it displays way too many things, and while you are correct that it is overcrowded, poorly lit, and terribly exhibited, it has more than the sufficient size to host a comprehensive pharaonic collection, with drastically improved technology and better organization. Thirdly, Tahrir has had ongoing construction projects since I can remember. First, there was the underground parking lot, then the new underground parking lot that seems to be never ending. The Ritz Carlton has had no issues bringing in supplies, so I don't know where you get this idea that it is inaccessible.
As for the other poster's comment, the NDP does not own the aforementioned buildings. The land belongs to the museum.
Finally, I do agree that there is absolutely no problem with the new site, as it is directly connected to the pyramids, and I would be shocked if it had any kind of entrance by the Desert Road. I also believe that it is logical to have the pharaonic museum right next to the pyramids. It isn't really the suburbs, it is just an extension of the pyramids site, so it isn't in the middle of nowhere.
xAbd0o February 25th, 2013, 10:39 PM Oh hey there, first of all, welcome to SSC Egypt.
Nd no one said that the land belongs to the NDP. Unless there is something I'm missing.

Thank you for the kind welcome. I must have misunderstood the earlier post. In any case, there is a legal dispute, and the museum wants the land to be cleared and turned back into a garden, like it once was. I think that is unlikely though. The land is too valuable.
xAbd0o February 28th, 2013, 12:55 AM That's ridiculous if implemented. IMHO, it should stay as a museum and it should host exhibitions from around the world and not just Egypt. It has already become an internationally recognised place.
