Ponferrada Templar Castle (Spain), year 1148

The city is noted for the Castillo de los Templarios, a Templar castle which covers approximately 16,000 square meters. In 1178, Fernando II of León donated the city to the Templar order for protecting the pilgrims on the Way of St. James who passed through El Bierzo in their road to Santiago de Compostela.

Based over a Celtic settlement, the Castle hosted the Knights Templar's Grand Master of Castille. However, the Templars were only able to enjoy the use of their fortress for about twenty years before the order was disbanded and its properties confiscated in 1311. Several noble houses fought over the assets until Alfonso XI alloted them to the Count of Lemos in 1340. Finally the Catholic Monarchs incorporated Ponferrada and its castle into the Crown in 1486. As with many other historical sites in Europe, many of the blocks that at one point formed the walls of the castle were removed and used in local construction projects. Extensive restoration works are ongoing.

Edo-Jo in Tokyo, destroyed during the war, was the largest castle ever built.
It was made up of 5 concentric rings of battlements, moats and towers around
a central Dojon, designed to trap and confuse attackers.

Thailand's great Northeastern plateau is found to have numerous temples of varying sizes.
Most of these structures are believed to be about a thousand years old and built by the people of Brahmanic culture.
These buildings built of brick, and sandstone, or a combination of the both materials.
The basic structure is built from three to five-story surmounted by Buddhist statues, have a low base and their spires are not so tall.
Phimai is the most spectacular and the most important among all.
Geographically, this sanctuary is located on a plain a high plain surrounded by three large canals.
No one knows who actually built Phimai, or why it was built at the particular site it occupies.
However, one source declares,
"It was built in the 12th century and some years before Angkor Wat."
Monsieur H. Parmentier, the Angkorean expert, after a detail study at Phimai came to the conclusion that the temple was built in the reign of King Suriyavoraman (A.D. 1002-1049).
He held that its architectural style closely resembled Angkorean buildings.
Prasat Him Phimai which is the largest sandstone sanctuary in Thailand.
It almost situated in the center of ancient Phimai city.
Its rectangular shape is 655 meters wide and 1,033 meters long.
Nowadays, the Sanctuary looks magnificently restored and renovated.
This fascinating ancient Khmer architecture has been preserved as the National Historical Park.
The monument itself is surrounded with two red sandstone walls.
The external wall and the gallery are punctuated by gate towers (Gopura) at four cardinal points, North, South, East and West.
[ A high point ]
Phimai sanctuary is oriented to the south.
But the orientation is not to the south exactly, the axis points 20 degrees east of south.
It may be that it was meant in order to face the direction of Angkor Wat.
There are ancient routes from here to Angkor Wat.
It is recommended that visitors start to enter the Phimai sanctuary from the outer south Gopura which is the main entrance.

Phanom Rung stone castle in Buriram province, Thailand

Located between Amphoe Nang Rong and Amphoe Prakhon Chai in Buriram at the right-turn on Km. 83-84 of Highway No. 24 and twelve kilometers further on. The well-known Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is on the top of the Phanom Rung Mountain. It is a walled-in enclosure, with both the door framed and walls carved in beautiful design of Lopburi Period style with Khmer influence. It is thought that it was originally built as an idol temple according to Brahminic belief.

Within the Prasat or castle, is the vibrant stone hall built in the 12th century A.D. The beauty of the main prang of Phanom rung lied not only in its plan, but in the vibrant stone cravings which cover large parts of the temple. Many lintels and pediments depict episodes from Indian texts such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas

One of the lintels, the well-known "Narai Bantomsin", which depicts a reclining Vishnu, was recently returned from a museum in the United States. This 12th century temple complex has recently been restored and preserved in an attractive historic park. Enhancing the imposing architecture is the hill-top location which commands panoramic views of the surrounding countryside

Situatet in north-west Albania, 100 km from the capital (Tirana), the city of Shkodra is the largest city in north Albania, 150000 inhabitants.
In the background of the Shkodra city, the "Rozafa" castle rises imposingly on a rocky hill, 130m above the sea level. It seems as if iron claws keep it on the steep rocks, surrounded by the Buna and Drini rivers.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn255/beloni_photo/shkodra1.jpg

History and Legend

The castle is known by the topomym "Rozafa". The hill on which castle lies, is in the center of all routes. The German author Johan Georgvan Han has asserted that no other place would be as suitable for its construction as the one chosen by the ancestors who were well aware of this fact. The castle has faced the torrents of history for thousands of years retaining ancient and medieval traces which are inseparably bound up with the roots of Shkodra city.

Its legend, archeology and history testify to its early existence. The legend is about the initiative of three brothers who set about building the castle. They worked all day, but the walls fell down at night. They met a clever old man who advised them to sacrifice someone so that the walls would stand. The three brothers found it difficult to decide whom to sacrifice. Finally, they decided to sacrifice one of their wives who would bring lunch to them the next day. So they agreed that whichever of their wives was the one to bring them lunch the next day was the one who would be buried in the wall of the castle. They also promised not to tell their wives of this. The two older brothers, however, explained the situation to their wives that night, while the honest youngest brother said nothing.

The next afternoon at lunch time, the brothers waited anxiously to see which wife was carrying the basket of food. It was Rosafa, the wife of the youngest brother. He explained to her what the deal was, that she was to be sacrificed and buried in the wall of the castle so that they could finish building it, and she didn't protest.

The faithfulness of the youngest brother and the life sacrifice of his young wife are highlighted as elements thas acquire symbolic importance. Rozafa, who was predestined to be walled was worried about her infant son, though accepted being walled on condition that they must leave her right breast exposed so as to feed her newborn son, her right hand to caress him and her right foot to rock his cradle.

Inside the castel:
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn255/beloni_photo/rozafa_gjiri__ver.jpg
I plead
When you wall me
Leave my right eye exposed
Leave my right hand exposed
Leave my right foot exposed
for the sake of my newborn son
so that when he starts crying
Let me see him with one eye
Let me caress him with one hand
Let me feed him with one breast
Let me rock his cradle with one foot
May the castle breast be walled
May the castle rise strong
May my son be happy

This was done, and that is why there is a stone in the castle from which, even today, milk flows.

What a wonderful thread! I am completely passionated for castles and medieval tows but unfortunatelly I have never been in Europe. The castles that more atract me are that from Central Europe. I love germans castles from Rhein River, this Hohenzollern that is here and so on. THe Czech castles are wonderful too ( karstejn, Krivoklat, Konopist, Bouzov etc) and that from Poland and Switerzland too. Wow, Malbork Marienburg is one that I wish to visit someday!!! I am brazilian and here we didn´t have medieval age then we have just fortress to defend our coast against pirates but not authentic castles. Some richs build castles just to live but it is considered fake. I am a teacher of History here and my little students feel enchanted with castles too. I will save this topic in " My favorites".

Personally I didn't think that thread, that I started will gain so much popularity :P It's a pity that your students can't see all those magnificent fortresses with their own eyes. It's true living history. I was in Malbork castle few times and it's very spectacular. Also inside - almost all gothic interiors are restored (Soviets burned castle in 1945).

I think that visiting Europe is nice idea for holidays, think about it :)

ElvenKing,
Of course I would love to visit Poland , Germany, Switerzland, Czech Republic etc on holidays but I don´t have money to it soon. :( But I hope that I will be able to visit them in future. I like a lot to take pictures and I would take 1500 pics or more if I would be there! :) Here in Brazil we like so much countries of Central Europe because they are so romantic and different of all we have here. If you are polish , do you know that in XIX we received here millions of inmigrants from Central Europe and from Italy and we have one state where people from Poland, Ukrania, Russia , etc are majority . They have there Poland Garden and houses made of wood using a kind to build houses that existed in Poland centuries ago and that do not exist there anymore. See you!

Here's the only two from Mexico.

rosn19
June 15th, 2009, 04:44 AM
There's only two structures to be considered actual castles in Mexico

They are:

Castillo Santa Secilia. Built in the 16th century, it was the home of a wealthy local mine owner in the city of Guanajuato, in central Mexico. Today it's a hotel. Although it looks very medieval, its purpose was only as a home, but not a fortress, therefore it's not 100% castle. The whole city of Guanajuato looks very medieval, but it dates back only to the 16th century.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_cJ2V9vlqINI/SXKBGb9n0_I/AAAAAAAAE7U/ZJVqIzCW3JE/DSCN4007.JPG

This is the best known one, the Imperial Chapultepec Castle. It was too built in the 16th century, and this is considered by most experts as the only true castle in the Americas. It meets the criteria of both royal/noble home and fortress. It housed all the Mexican Viceroys (representatives of the Spanish monarch in New Spain) for 300 years until independence in 1821. It housed both of the Mexican Imperial Families, and many Mexican presidents until the 1930s. It is built on top of a hill in the middle of what is now the city, and a forest below.

Eagle Nests Trail (Polish: Szlak Orlich Gniazd) is a marked trail in south-western Poland, on Kraków-Jura Highlands, running roughly from Częstochowa to Kraków.

The trail is named after a series of medieval castles it passes by. The castles date mostly to the 14th century and were constructed by the order of King of Poland, Kazimierz the Great and are named 'Eagle Nests' as most of them were located on large, tall rocks.

Most of them were built along the 14th century Polish - Czech border, as Silesia belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia back then. The trail, considered one of the best trails in Poland. It encompasses 25 castles and has 163km (the bicycle trail has 188km).

Slovakia is full of castles - most of them were rebuilded after the invasions of Mongols in 13th century. Here are some of the most famous and important:

Castle of Devín was one of the central castles of Great Morava, the most powerful Slavic country in early middle-age. Devín was destroyed by Napoleons army

http://www.slovakia.travel/Photo/data/Images/DetailSize/0/Devin_DBU_DSC_0001.JPG.jpeg

Bratislava castle is the most famous slovak castle, is also on slovak euro coins. Maria Theresia loved this castle. Was destroyed in 1811 by flame, in 50s was reconstructed

http://queez.bloguje.sk/hrad.JPG

Castle of Nitra is probably the oldest castle in Slovakia from 9th century, capital of Pribinas kingdom. Pribina was the first count of Slavs - proto-Slovaks

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/Sabkad/Foto43.jpg?t=1247087543

the most beautiful is Castle in Bojnice, which was romantically rebuilded in the end of 19th century

http://www.zsmedilava.edu.sk/files/foto/bojnice.jpg

the largest is Castle of Spiš - the wooden castle was destroyed by Mongols, after that was builded as a stone castle. Spiš buried in 18th century.

Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

From 1678 it was the centre of civilian, administrative and military life at the Cape, until the settlement grew and some functions and activities moved away from the Castle. Today the Castle is the seat of the military in the Cape, and houses the Castle Military Museum and Iziko Museums Cape Town (William Fehr Collection).

Nice thread. But Germany is definitely underrepresented here. ;)

So let's start with my home state, Lower Saxony... which means that you still have to wait for Neuschwanstein since it's in Bavaria. :tongue3:
(I sure have to admit that the most impressive German castles are located in Southern Germany)

But as mentioned above, we'll start in the North.

Bentheim Castle, near the Dutch border.

Being a patriotic ^%$#@!, I will post some castles which are located in the Netherlands.
However, I saw some nice examples of castles in this thread! Reminds me I have to go to Romania some time, because Peles (the only palace I knew there) doesn't seem
to be the only interesting castle there.

Muiderslot, Muiden (10-15 km. east of Amsterdam)
This castle is famous in the Netherlands because of the "Muiderkring", which was active in the 17th centrury. It was a group of writers, who came together in the castle
to discuss their plays, novels and poems, and who shared the same interests. Famous "Muiderkring"writers were: P.C. Hooft, Bredero, Joost van den Vondel,
Schweelinck (music composer), Constantijn Huygens and others.

http://www.muiderslot.nl/media/downloads/Muiderslot004.JPG

Huis Bergh, 's Heerenberg (east of Arnhem, near the German border)
You can actually see an original panel of the Maestà by Duccio here!

Slot Loevestein, Poederoijen (south of Utrecht)
From this castle, Hugo de Groot escaped in a bookcoffin in 1621.

http://media.nu.nl/m/m1cz2lpa5854.jpg

De Haar, Haarzuilens
The Dutch Pierrefonds, almost completely rebuild in the 19th century. One of the biggest castles in Holland.

Kasteel Hoensbroek, Hoensbroek (Limburg)

Kasteel Doornenburg, Doornenburg (Arnhem/Nijmegen)

Kasteel Duivenvoorde, Voorschoten, The Hague

Kasteel Brederode, Santpoort
Once a mighty castle, now an impressive ruin.

Two I like in Belgium: (I prefer medieval creepy castles to those lush baroque over-the-top castles)

Bouillon, once the greatest fort in Europe, now one of the most impressive ruins. This is the place where the duke of Bouillon embarked on his gruesome crusades to Jerusalem...

wrong, it's neobyzantine, a style that was copied by Ottomans and Arabs.
And Constatinople is as European as Rome.

Rayen Castle, Kerman, Iran

Rayen Castle (Persian: arg -e- rāyen) is an adobe castle in Kerman province, Iran. The medieval mudbrick city of Rayen is similar to the Arg-é Bam city which was destroyed in an earthquake in December 2003. Rayen displays all the architectural elements of a deserted citadel. It appears extremely well preserved, considering the numerous natural disasters that have been destroying similar structures nearby, and it is one of the most interesting sites in Iran.

Arg-e-Rayen was inhabited until 150 years ago and, although believed to be at least 1,000 years old, may in fact have foundations from the pre-Islamic Sassanid era.

The Sassanid (also Sassanian) dynasty was the name given to the kings of Persia, which includes much of present-day Iran. During the era of the second Persian Empire, from 224 until 651, the last Sassanid king, Yazdegerd III, lost a 14-year struggle to drive out the Umayyad Caliphate, the first of the Islamic empires. By the Sassanids, their Empire was called Iran or Eranshahr. The Sassanid era is considered to be one of the most important historical periods in Iran.

Rudkhan Castle, Fouman, Gilan, Iran

Rud-khan castle (also Rood-khan castle), is a brick and stone medieval castle in Iran.

Located 25 km southwest of Foman city north of Iran in Gilan province, it is a military complex which had been constructed during the Seljuk Dynasty by the followers of Ismā'īlī sect. The Castle is built on two tips of a mount, with an area of 50,000 square metres. Its architects have benefited from natural mountainous features in the construction of the fort.

A river known as `Rudkhan Castle River' also exists near the castle, which originates from the surrounding heights and flows from south to north. After crossing a mountainous winding route with dense forests, the first thing that one notices about the castle is its large entrance gate.

Rudkhan Castle sits at the two peaks of a mountain at elevations of 715 and 670 meters and contains strong fortifications and battlements at a length of 1,550 meters. The castle's 42 towers still stand intact.

Many of the castles in Portugal were built by the arabs. And than rebuilt when they were conquered.

Only the castles built after XII don't have moorish influences

I've seen some incredible architecture in this thread. Simply amazing builds...

But i must say that many of the buildings here aren't exactly castles. I mean, it's too hard to define what is exactly a castle, but many of the buildings we see in this thread seem more like romantic palaces, and countryside houses...

But like i said, it's hard to know what is exactly a castle. And they have diferent styles in diferent regions...

Here is one from my country:

Khotyn Fortress, Ukraine

The Khotyn Fortress (Ukrainian: Хотинська фортеця) is a fortification complex located on the shores of the Dniester River in Khotyn, Chernivtsi Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. Construction on the current fortress was started in 1325, while major improvements were made in the 1380s and in the 1460s.

Here's a funny one: Almere Castle (Netherlands).

Almere is a new town, serving as a suburb of Amsterdam located on artificial land east of Amsterdam. It's an ambitious town, it has grown from 0 to 200.000 inhabitants in 30 years. With this amition also comes a desire to create an identity and even a history. Many people get married in Almere, but there is not really a scenic place to do so. Also there is apparently room for a good hotel and conference facilities.

So some developer decided it was a good idea to build a castle in this new town. Unfortunately halfway through the construction of this castle, the developer ran out of money. The required zoning changes, which would have given room to additional housing development around the castle, were rejected by the city council. So Almere got more history than they bargained for: Instead of a castle, they got a ruin.

Some pics:

Here are some examples of Castles in North american built many years before the dawn of the XX century.

Chapultepec Castle

This castle,an icon on Mexico's history. It's history dates back to the 14th Century Perched on top of Chapultepec Hill in Mexico City’s Chapultepec district, the castle, once the home of the Spanish Viceroys, is now a museum. Located right in the middle of Chapultepec Park, it’s the only castle in North America that has been used as residence by a ruling European sovereign.

When the Spanish arrived, the Tlahuica were fiercely loyal to the Aztec empire, savagely resisting the advance of the conquistadors. In April 1521, they were finally overcome, and Cortes torched the city. Destroying the city pyramid, Cortes used the stones to build a Castle on the pyramid's base.

Lovely pictures! Absolutely beautiful. When I composed my first entry I should have followed my
first instinct of saying "The USA and Canada". However, regarding this statement:

"It's history dates back to the 14th Century when an Aztec King started to built it."

The buildings shown are of European influenced design, so I think it can be safely pointed out that the original design as envisioned by the Aztec King would have looked nothing like the existing colonial architecture. As we know, Columbus sailed the ocean at the end of the 15th century (1492, to be exact), and
European settlers really began no form of architecture till the 16th Century.

The lovely buildings you show are indeed older than Casa Loma, but are still copies of European styles popular back in the Mother Country at the time.

Castles of Belgium
There are approximately 3000 castles, farm-castles, citadels, manors or palaces in Belgium. Belgium has one of the highest density of castles per square km in the world, if not simply the highest. Some regions (eg. the Condroz, Hesbaye, Brabant...) have an average two castles per village. Belgium has over 400 castles that are open to the public, either for sightseeing, receptions, seminars, events or as hotels, restaurants or holiday centres.

Greek architecture was based chiefly on the post-and-beam system, with columns carrying the load. Timber construction was superseded by construction in marble and stone. The column, a unit human in scale, was used as a module for all of a temple's proportions. The Doric order, probably the earliest, remained the favorite of the Greek mainland and western colonies. The Ionic order developed in eastern Greece; on the mainland, it was used chiefly for smaller temples and interiors. The greatest Greek architectural achievement was the Athens acropolis.
