As per the usual day off, I ventured to downtown. I had an idea of what I wanted to take pictures of and went for it. Alas the Mayfair Theatre. One challenge that met me, to get a pic looking down into the theatre with the collapsed roof. Becoming friends with the janitor from The Congress outside I git the pic I wanted. Also learned some interesting facts about The Congress itself and the long gone Kernan Hotel.

Nice shots irishredd. It's a shame how the theater ( and the surrounding area) has decayed sooo much since its heyday. I can't wait until (if) redevelopment efforts move into this area, it has too much potential. I love my city, but it will be even better when (if) the areas surrounding the CBD, from east to west, are redeveloped as planned.

the accent development company was supposed to be doing something with this building, but i guess it got succumbed by the recession. what a shame, but i still have high hopes it'll eventually happen.

It doesn't seem that they can do much except re-use the facade. What a shame. The Howard Street area once had 12 vaudeville theaters with their ornate decor and potted palms. Now all that's left is the Hippodrome. A couple years ago, I recall that Everyman Theater was going to recycle the old Towne theater that sits fallow but hasn't caved in like the Mayfair. I wonder if that will ever happen.

Sounds like the Royal from what you're saying.

In it's last days as a movie theater it was the Towne, with its impressive facade on Fayette St. I think it was last used in the 80's and has been tightly boarded up since then, so unless water got in, it should be nothing at all like the Mayfair.

WHOA I had no clue that the roof was like that.. I ride by it all the time on the light rail and often wonder why it had not been redeveloped.. I can see from the photo it needs alot of work...

Ive been wondering what happened? Did it simply one day cave in because it was abandoned so long? Such a great facade on that building

I think it happened years ago in a heavy snow. The roof had been leaking, timbers rotted and there was too much weight.

Again, this is a major architectural project and/or dissertation for someone.

I'm surprised it hasn't been condemned and demolished. What's left looks pretty unstable to me. Not only has the roof caved in, it also appears some of the interior has also and the walls partially unsupported.
