Now I know where I want to retire.

Am I misunderstanding, or is the price of real estate in Eilat much lower than in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv? If so, why?

Much Much Much Lower!!!
I think you can get villas in Eilat...with Pool in the backyard for like 120 USD.

Infact, alot of Israeli families who are wealthy, but not that wealthy..just high-middle income...tend to buy an apartment in Eilat. Much like they buy a cottage in Europe or the US...
They use it for the holidays and weekend gateaways since its only a 7 hour drive which is not that far...

Most of the year they simply rent it out to people or give it to their kids whenever they want/needs it.

Which makes perfect sense, cause you rent it out to people in the winter/fall/spring and in the summer where its hot..the kids come and crash the place and work in Eilat. They usually are lenient to students working there and would love their services since there is promenade shpping and eilat malls and most of it doesnt charge Tax (VAT - anyone can confirm that?)

there is no VAT in Eilat... so it a little cheaper. most of the business here rising the prices so it will fit Jerusalem and Tel Aviv...

you don't really want to retire in Eilat... it's a ghost town in the winter, and hell in the summer...

The houses in Eilat are very nice and also creative, compared to the other places...

but yea.... it is a ghost town..nothing to do...
in the summer the population goes to 70,000 with the guests..and in the winter it drops down to 30,000....

I dont think you will expect any sort of winter in Eilat. Usually in the mid 10's.

Most people who live there work in the tourism sector or the export business..some work in customs. There is also a branch in the Ben Gurion University there. A few schools, synagogues, cemeteries

i was there in the winter and it's far from being ghost city.
actually, i really enjoyed of Eilat in the winter. not too many people, not too many school kids who's doing mess but still not a ghtost city, you don't have to stand in the line for an hour to get into some attraction. it's great!

from now on im going to Eilat only in Winter.

It looks very promising...more tourist areas and more things to do. The warmth of Eilat is insane....infact..its dangerous to be out in the sun like that...

I wouldnt mind going for a gate-a-way. Im sure most Israeli companies let their employees fly for a weekend-gateaway to Eilat in the winter time...something like in Hannucka.

Question is..can you be in a bathing suite? can u get a tan? :? The weather is as hot as say Riyadh or even...Kuwait City?

it's more like a brainwash for kids... when i was there, i felt like this place is to take kids to spend your money in for no reason... everywhere i went there was this TV with stupid kid songs about King Solomon to brainwash the kids.

118 is alot of money for all you can eat.....

I can eat for 2 people for under 100 NIS in Canada......Chinese mostly :D

The best place to eat is this place in Herzelia Pituach. Its this Indian Tanduri house...all u can eat.... had only like 5-7 options..but its very good....open on the shabbat :mad:

the meat is very special and unique.. and there is Entrecote too. the restaurant is also not cosher, so the prices are bit higher.
besides... how can you compare a Brazilian restaurant to a Chinese restaurant?! are you vegetarian?!?!

We have a few Brazilian Churascarias here in Houston, too. They are great and have a lot more than just entricote. The cost is over 200 NIS per person. At least I get a coke with my meal.

Eilat is cool!

Nice import/export business going on there.

I think that a good portion of our imports from China arrive in Eilat.

Ashdod seems to be busy too, but Cars are popular in Eilat.

Haifa deals alot with chemicals and imports/exports from Europe/Americas...

only the gov. can give the police backup so they do something. the city of Eilat can't do nothing.

this problem is common also in Miami.

another thing to deal with the youth is to build more high-class hotels so it will be too expensive for the young people. but it's not really good idea.

I dont think making the city into a youth-resort is good nor making it into a pricy joint would benefit anyone.

All hotels and industry deals in different perspectives. There is maybe 20% who deal with high end good while 50% deal with both and possibly another 30% deal with youth and discounted items...
taking one would just hurt the other...afterall..pricy resorts need the young to work and they would need a place to crash....

The law needs to be in place ofcourse because drugs creates serious issues for the city as turf wars and violence erupts. Eilat is a great place and it can be very family oriented..

i think that drugs is not such common problem as alcohol. the main reason for violence in Israel today is alcohol.

But blaming alcohol isnt the main reason..

Well, when I was in Eilat last August, the impression wasn't too good as of the beach at the centre next to the shopping mall. Main beach was filled with trash and nobody didn't care and those loudspeakers with (imho) cheap eurotrance didn't make me feel like in earthly paradise either and to be honest, Eilat lacked the authentic Israeli feeling (many africans others than those from Ethiopia there) . It was sorta european/way too tacky island within the Israel(but Nice is batter for sure in this sense). So I have mixed feelings with Eilat. But Coral beach was the best i think.

I can't say i'm a Jew since i happen to follow a different religon, but if origins were what matters, then i wouldn't be a fake Jew either. You give yourself licenses when you make jokes about someone or something else, yet then got butthurt when other people respond... As someone who's been on both side of the spectrum...i dont think you, zohar, should be the last person to comment on Jews from abroad.
You never been to their communities and you never personally met them and they are well diverse people....its sad that you...someone who acts as if Israel is liberal gay paradise.....
You yourself should remember that most of the Gay Movement in Israel (1970's and i have articles/documents to back it up) were started from Jews abroad...

Also alot of the investment and trade occured from Jews abroad.

Not to mention intelligence gathering and tourism...
I can go on and on and on, why Jews abroad are literally a lifeline for Israel...and i dont think they wish wars for Israel. Afterall, you are the ones who are voting in these politicians who dodge peace and act in their own behest.

If you knew anything about Jews living abroad, you would know that many of them defend Israel strongly, because they take a few bullets from Neo-Nazis, Left Wing and Arab/Muslims abroad comparing Israel and Jews together.

Im not going to defend Makkabi's talk...but atleast try to come to some relative cities in the diaspora like London, NY, LA, Miami, Buenos Aries to start judging these people...

Yes, i understand, and that's why i said from now on. If based in the past you're gonna pick on Zohar all the time or anyone else and write tasteless things that whoever enters the Israeli section can read, then you're gonna make this place bitter for everyone. The rules are there for all of us, so if you feel you're being harrassed, then stick to them and report the person you think it's bugging you. However, you can't expect people being nice to you if most of the time you pour hate like if there was no tomorrow. If you think that your perspective of the world is giving you troubles, then keep them to yourself, it's a common sense rule.

What the Russian, German, American and Iranian interests was overthere. Most people don't know why at the evening the Kosovowar stopped, the Germans and Americans (and the U.N.) agreed upon an old conflict (conflict since the 1920's between Standard Oil and IG-Farben, that partly started WW-II). ''Suddenly'' only at the evening the Kosovowar stopped the Nuremberg laws where overruled and Americans where allowed to buy parts of IG-Farben again (BAYER, BASF etc.) for the role the Germans and Americans played and agreed upon in the Yugoslavian war in the '90's and agreements upon the Oilpipeline from the Kaspian Sea towards the Meditaranian, while Germany gave illigally most of it's DDR-weapons to the Kroats etc. etc.
Last year I was in Herzegovina and saw the refineries that they didn't want to sell to Shell, but they did choose a Russian company to re-open it years later although they needed the money earlier.

But who knows, if the oilpipelines will stay a cold-war for the next decades, it is easier to live with.
