Yes, Hotels in Israel are quite expensive, but Israel is still cheaper then most of w. Europe, Turkey is cheaper and Egypt much much more, Greece isn't so cheap any more now that they switched to Euros .

what are you talking about? a bus from Tel Aviv to Eilat costs like 70 NIS for each direction (about 350 KM each way), and it is very cheap refering to most of the places in europe which is far more expensive.

That is most definitely not the Mediterranen though. It's the Red Sea of course (Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba).
It's a tourist city mainly. There is also a port and residential areas as well.
Lifeainteasy April 5th, 2005, 10:16 AM it kinda reminds me of miami for some reason cause of all the sea ports and stuff....but i really like the pics, esp the IMAX theatre one at night, i love how it has an outline on the building..:)

Monkey May 5th, 2005, 10:02 PM Attractions in Eilat
Yigal Zur traveled to the southernmost city without the kids, and ended up wondering why so many people prefer Turkey
By Yigal Zur
EILAT - Located in Israel's southernmost tip on the coast of the Red Sea, the city of Eilat is continually reinventing itself. With 46 hotels and an abundance of bars and restaurants, the battle for the vacationer's pocket produced a burst of attractions and leisure activities.
I admit to being one of those people who usually passes through Eilat on their way to the Sinai desert; but after the fabulous weekend I spent there, I wondered why so many Israelis prefer Turkey as their holiday destination.
My wife and I arrived in Eilat without the kids, and decided to make good use of this rare freedom and explore as many attractions and activities as possible. We were 20-something again, and on our way to the IMAX Theater .
IMAX
The crowds flock to this elegant theater resembling a silver pyramid, which can be seen from anywhere in the city. The theater's host, who goes by the nickname Fig, gave us a tour of the futuristic attraction, where animated characters of old meet their contemporary counterparts.
When the show ended, we didn't see anyone trying to steal the 3D glasses. Suddenly everything seemed so civilized.
*IMAX, 4 Yotam street, NIS 49 (about 11 Dollar) for adults, NIS 45 (10 Dollar) for children. The movie Haunted Mansion costs NIS 55 (about 12 Dollar).
The Underwater Observatory and Marine Park
We continued to the Marine Park , where a different sea creature is chosen as the park's theme each month and an emphasis is placed on seminars and lectures pertaining to that specific creature.
Accompanied by Eytan, an expert on marine life and one of the park's directors, we began our journey at the impressive aquarium, which
holds more than 400 fish. Here you will learn, for example, that open-sea fish use their big tail fins for swimming and their other fins for steering.
We moved on to the shark pool, where Eytan explained there are 450 different shark types in the world, 10 percent of which inhabit the Red Sea. We discussed the most recent shark attack incident in Eilat, and the eerie fact that the frightening sea predators prefer female Swedish tourists as their victims. Other amazing creatures, such as sea bats and cats, dwell in the pool as well.
Our next stop was the sea turtle pool, where we enjoyed feeding Hanaleh, an impressive green sea turtle. We also spotted some hornbill turtles, a breed that is nearing extinction because the Chinese enjoy eating them so much.
The Amazon exhibit featured red piranhas, an anaconda, and a few mysterious eels. But I was captivated by the alligator turtle, whose shape hasn't been altered in 250 million years. This peculiar creature can weigh as much as 80 kilos (about 176 pounds), even though it is only 65 centimeters (about two feet) long. This turtle is the heaviest animal in the world, relative to its size.
* The Underwater Observatory and Marine Park, located seven kilometers (roughly four miles) south of the city (towards Taba Beach). NIS 79 (about 18 Dollar) for adults, NIS 69 (about 16 Dollar) for children (including Oceanarium).
Chow Time
Tired and hungry from our morning adventure, we made our way to Santa Fe, an American-style Mexican grill restaurant located in the in north beach promenade. We kicked off our meal with the house salsa and guacamole sauce, followed by goose liver in mango sauce. I didn't touch the original Mexican tortillas because I wanted to leave enough room in my stomach for what would come later: chicken wings in sweet chili sauce. And these are just the appetizers.
For the main course we had stir-fried tiger shrimps in cream and coconut milk, served with Mexican rice and lamb ribs in a spicy peppers and tequila sauce.
We were on our last legs when dessert was served in the form of two impressive white chocolate ice cream cones.
It's easy to guess what we did after lunch: we went back to the hotel and had a long, air-conditioned siesta.
*Santa Fe restaurant, Caesar Hotel facade. NIS 80-100 (about 18-22 Dollar) on average per person.
Telephone: +972-8-633-8081
Wow; A Good Time
For fear of waking up hungry at the Hilton Queen Sheba hotel, I pre-ordered a plate of sushi from the Yakimono restaurant that was sent to our room at 6 p.m. We opened our eyes and curtains, gazed at the blue sea and red granite mountains, and ate our meal. Now we were prepared for a night on the town.
We decided to see the Wow show at the Royal Garden hotel. The theater was so spacious and well kept it was hard to believe we were in Israel. The start of the show was somewhat disappointing, and I thought "Wow, what a drag," but it picked up soon enough.
The dance numbers were a bit tacky for my taste, but the rest of the show was exciting. The Chinese child acrobats, as well the tightrope walkers and Rubber Girl, were all amazing.
We had a good time and felt we got our money's worth.
*Wow show, Royal Garden hotel, NIS 55 (about 12 Dollar) for hotel guests, NIS 95 (about 21 Dollar) for visitors.
Papagaio Restaurant; A South American Feast
It was getting late, and we knew we had to eat dinner or we would never get to it. We went to the Eilat branch of Papagaio, a Brazilian restaurant chain that is justifiably referred to as a meaty delight. We are not avid carnivores, and normally 200 grams (about seven ounces) of meat is more than enough, but here the average meat consumption is 800-900 grams (about 28-32 ounces) per person, mainly because the meals are served on an all-you-can-eat basis.
The restaurant serves 11 different kinds of meat dishes (sorry I can't remember their names, I was too busy eating), salmon, and seven kinds of salad. Once again, we could not resist ourselves and wrapped up the meal with excellent desserts.
*Papagaio, Dan hotel promenade. NIS 108 (24 Dollar) per person, not including drinks.
Jeep See; Waking Up to the Desert
The following morning I joined Meir from Jeep See tours on a desert excursion (my wife decided to pass, seeing that she's not a big fan of the desert, especially in the early morning hours). We drove on the northern path that runs along the Roded and Netafim brooks, the Ein-Netafim spring, and the flamingo pools.
We saw a number of desert animals, and even stopped by a vein of Pyrite stone (fool's gold) that contains real gold. However, a ton of pyrite stone must be crushed to produce only 30 grams (about one ounce) of gold dust.
*Jeep See. 2.5 hour tour: NIS 90 (20 Dollar) for adults, NIS 70 (about 16 Dollar) for children.
4 hour tour: NIS 140 (about 31 Dollar) for adults, NIS 110 (about 24 Dollar) for children.
Telephone: 08-6330133.
PagoPago Restaurant; Divine Desserts
Exhausted and hungry once again, we chose Pago Pago, a restaurant built on a raft that floats calmly amid famous people's yachts in the lagoon.
We had the Thai salad for starters, followed by a serving of delicious sushi and more terrific seafood. But what I remember most is the excellent taste of the desserts that lingered even as we flew back home.
*Pago Pago, Lagoon. Telephone: 08-6376660
Rivkin May 7th, 2005, 06:46 PM Is it expensive in Eilat? As much I've heard that in Turkey and Egypt prices are much cheaper than in Israel especially hotels. For example taking trip to Israel from Estonia where I live is about four times as expensive as taking trip to Turkey :( . I'd really like to travel to Israel but unfortunately can't afford it yet.
Monkey May 7th, 2005, 07:34 PM yes Israel is very expensive of course more expensive than Turkiye and Egypt
i don't know what about Eesti but from Russia to Israel is costing some 400$(2 weeks)
u have any sorts of hotels in Eilat u can find cheap motel, food in Eilat not really expensive(in the rest Israel is more expensive) but i think 3 days is enough for Eilat(it's small city)
u can go to other israeli interesting places like:
Jerusalem
Dead Sea
Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Haifa(Bahai gardens)
Latrun museum(it's awesome)
Sakhne
Tiberia
if do u speak russian u don't need english in Israel heheh:))

makes you think how similar and close it is..
maybe there can one day be a jeep trip from s.arabia, then jordan, eilat, then sinai!
4-country race.
this would be so cool!

I know only Tel Aviv, up to now.
EBA May 26th, 2007, 04:26 AM Can someone tell me the main differences between Eilat and Aqaba. In terms of what there is to do, and the differences in how the cities look(infrastructure, architecture, housing, appearence of wealth, etc.).
ZOHAR May 26th, 2007, 12:43 PM Eilat is richer, with much more attractions
Ynhockey May 26th, 2007, 09:48 PM Yeah, Aqaba is about twice as large, mostly poor people (although it's fairly wealthy by Jordanian standards). It also has an extremely incredibly huge Jordanian flag. Other than that similar attractions mostly. Eilat has a great marine part which I don't think Aqaba has.
EBA May 26th, 2007, 09:54 PM Do people from Aqaba work in Eilat?
ZOHAR May 26th, 2007, 10:11 PM no
TalB May 26th, 2007, 10:46 PM If they did, then they would have to bring their passports with them, which would take some time depending on the traffic.

i totally agree with you.
they can't build towers and skyscrapers (even 30 floors) in the area becouse of the airplanes.
the land that the airport is build on is exactly on Great Rift Valley. so, building hotels is not a smart ting to do, that's why a canal can be great idea.

Well, it's not that bad, I don't recall any major accidents in that airport. There have been much more dangerous situations, such as the standard approach to the old Hong Kong airport.
I also wonder why there is no ILS approach to the runway from the north. Probably because they use this direction for takeoffs.
Urban Legend March 5th, 2008, 01:30 AM yes, that can be dangerous
Gizdavetz March 6th, 2008, 04:01 PM From all the pics I've seen on this forum, FROM ISRAEL, the only place I don't like is Eilat. It looks just like a tourist ghetto and that's it.
Ynhockey March 6th, 2008, 04:45 PM I'm not a huge fan of Eilat either, but for entirely different reasons. The tourism part is fine, Eilat absolutely can't survive without its tourist industry, which also gives a huge boost to the Israeli economy overall. I believe Eilat generates more tourism than either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.
All in all, Eilat is so far away from any other major Israeli locality (the closest is Beer Sheva, almost 200 km away by air, and about 300 by road), a shorter distance than Tel Aviv is from Metula and the Hermon! Far-away towns like that can't go anywhere without a serious economic boost, and in Eilat that's tourism. In some cities in the world it could be oil or gold or whatever - each city has its own assets and they should be exploited.
TheCat March 7th, 2008, 12:23 PM ^^ I agree! Why the heck doesn't Israel build a decent high-speed freeway to Eilat?!? I know it costs a lot, but in addition to being super slow and indirect, the current road to Eilat is extremely dangerous. They should build a 4-lane grade-separated freeway to Eilat, and it can have a high speed limit because it shouldn't even have frequent exits.
Or alternatively, build a high speed rail line (the kind that travels 300km/h :)). I guess the main obstacle to such a project is the availability of air travel, but that requires going to an airport, and then includes all the hassles that airports entail. Additionally there is the cost factor.
By the way, what is the cost of a typical summer airfare to Eilat from, say, Haifa and Sde Dov?
rheintram March 7th, 2008, 06:22 PM I was in Eilat last summer. The red sea and the red mountains (jordan) are absolutely stunning, so is the way to Eilat through the Negev. Unfortunately there is no train, only EGGED. I think a new route for passenger trains should be built from Beer Sheva down to Eilat, it could also be extended to Akaba.
The airport certainly needs to be moved, it's right inside the city, which takes away a lot of space.
Unfortunately there is not much to do in Eilat, besides going to the beach and trekking in the desert. It's too much of a tourist place in my opinion, but they certainly serve great Burgers at Barbis and the meat at Pedro's is just delicious, so if you are in Eilat, go there! ;)

Its a waste to make a train. I mean, it can be useful, but your talking about less than 1% of the population using it. Its going to be empty... and if it will be used well it will run 2-3 times a day and just to make the train is a hassle and in the heat and stuff.... Not to mention the distance is quite far. I belive its like 3.5-5 hours drive from B.S to Eilat.
Unfortunately there is not much to do in Eilat, besides going to the beach and trekking in the desert. It's too much of a tourist place in my opinion, but they certainly serve great Burgers at Barbis and the meat at Pedro's is just delicious, so if you are in Eilat, go there! ;)
Eilat has alot of things to do. You gotta have a niche really.
I think its built for tourist. I think its small and all, but its really intresting place to go.
If you dont like activities there is always IMAX and clubs on top of a duty free mall which gets alot of people in the shops saving a few shekels here and there.

OMG!! I STAYED THERE!
WORST HOTEL EVER!
IT WAS CALLED HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS...
IT WAS RUNNED BY DRUNK RUSSIAN GAURDS AND PEOPLE UNDER 25..
MAKOT! MUSICA! KOOSIOT! BROKEN BOTTLES ON PEOPLES FACE! BEATING UP THE DJ 3 TIMES IN AN HOUR! UGLY WASHROOMS AND RIPPED BEDS!!!
INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BoxIL November 18th, 2008, 01:59 PM Great pics ! [except the express hotel after what kappa said :D ]

Next time im in Israel..... me, you and UrbanLegend should hit that place...
seriously...
i was shocked..
It was a Holiday Inn brand name and literally, it was the worst hotel ever.
it felt like some rich parent who owned the hotel and didnt need it gave it to their kids.
Literally, there was no authority..it felt like a day care or a day camp or something...... kids 13-26 were there.
I was completely shocked...
This was the decay of Israeli society...
you got Big Russian Gaurds who were finishing a 1.15L bottle of Absolut Vodka w/Redbull, Ice T and Cola.. and i came there at 730AM from a Dan bus...
even the Dan bus was bad!
They had to call the Police to the stop 3 times cause these punk kids were smoking in the back and wanted to burn some ladies hair.....
Urban Legend November 18th, 2008, 08:25 PM ^^

There is a couple of hotels that are like that for Bedouins and Arabs in Eilat. When i was on Taglit, we stopped first at this hotel....the whole crowd in the lounge was araviot with their kids....insane...
i didnt bother staying there. I walked over to American Hotel or whatever it was called and got a fair rate from them......
Plus they had a decent pool...not a DJ pumping music and 200 kids in the pool

Kappa21 December 12th, 2008, 03:42 AM nice photos...
they should enlarge the mall
Ynhockey December 14th, 2008, 07:41 AM Nah no one needs that mall. I think they should widen the promenade. There are certain times when it's so full that you can't walk without pushing everyone else.

Blame the vendors...many of them set up shop and examples right in the walking space...so you either trample them over or your simply push and shove everyone..
at night is always nice.
Those fuckers never sleep...sell everything...
Urban Legend December 19th, 2008, 06:20 PM i came back from Eilat again. took some shots with my phone.

Elkhanan1 December 20th, 2008, 04:32 AM I think it's time for Eilat to get a little classier. Aside from the top hotels, it seems kind of kitchy to me.
