trmather May 23rd, 2009, 11:43 PM Looks like it needs a bit of a touch up, but it's a classic, huge South American stadium nonetheless.

Jim856796 May 24th, 2009, 07:58 AM It is in my list of stadiums that need a renovation or upgrade. The stadium apparently has a lot of bleacher seating, and I hate bleacher seating. It is not an American College Football Stadium. Here is another photo of the stadium:

September 11, 1973 concentration camp after the Military Coup led by Augusto Pinochet
This is an important part of the history of National Stadium of Chile.
from wikipedia:
The Estadio Nacional was used during the 1973 Chilean coup d'état for the internment of 40,000 detainees, between September and November of that year. The field and gallery were used to hold men, while women were held in the swimming pool changing rooms and associated buildings. Locker rooms and corridors were all used as prison facilities while interrogations were carried out in the velodrome.
It is sometimes mistakenly believed that Chilean folk singer and political activist Víctor Jara was murdered at Estadio Nacional. He was actually murdered at the formerly called Estadio Chile, which was renamed in his honor in 2003.
FIFA president of the time Sir Stanley Rous insisted the USSR team to play a World Cup qualifier at the time. The Soviets naturally refused and Chile were qualified for the 1974 World Cup, where they failed to advance from a group coming third containing both FR Germany and the GDR as well as Australia.
The documentary film, Estadio Nacional, was based on the stadium and its use during the coup d'état.

Jim856796 May 27th, 2009, 05:41 AM One other stadium has been used as an internment camp. It was the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria during World War II. Stadiums shouldn't serve as concentration camps because that is one way that a stadium can be abused.

Jim856796 June 16th, 2009, 06:56 AM I don't know. The National Stadium's roof shouldn't look similar to any other stadium's roofs. And I always wanted to build a ring of luxury boxes on the top of the stadium's stands. But that would be a difficult, as the addition of luxury boxes would require the stadium's ground print to be enlarged. And is there a press box on the stadium's west portion?

More than 40 million dolars of investment.
It will be inaugurated on July 2010.
It will look similar to the Berlin olympic stadium.
danVan June 17th, 2009, 02:55 AM have they started working on this??
Jim856796 June 17th, 2009, 05:30 AM If only they could remove the press box and the existing roof above it. to make way for the new roof. Anyway, the renovation will consist of the roof covering all the stands, installation of seats around the whole stadium, a new state-of-the-art scoreboard, the track and field being lowered by 2 metres, and the exterior may be painted white. The stadium closes for the renovation on August 15. I don't know if the renovation can be completed in just one year.
And one more thing: The stadium does not look similar to the Berlin Olympic Stadium because the Berlin Olympic Stadium has a gap in the west end and this stadium does not. The new roof should have been a cross between Rome's and Berlin's Olympic Stadiums.
Government will announce the multimillion dollar investment in the National Stadium.
The remodeling work will begin after that Chile faces Venezuela in the playoffs, and the reopening is scheduled for March 3, 2010. The ANFP has asked about the Monumental, while the U (team nickname) are not told.
On Monday at 10:30 am in the National Stadium, President Michelle Bachelet announced one of the most important projects of his last year of government: the refurbishment of the premises ñuñoíno, involving a cost of six billion pesos .
The news was announced last night by Radio Bío-Bío, who reported that the changes will suffer the National is to lower the pitch between 1.20 and two meters, change all the seats and painted blue, white and red, Bookmark and purchase electronic equipment, among others (see side).
The idea of the coin is that the site is 3 March 2010, with a friendly match between South Africa and the national team (which is dated FIFA). Ie, a week before the end of the term of Michelle Bachelet.
All this is already known to the ANFP. So much so that yesterday the president of the agency suspended a trip abroad after receiving the invitation from the President of the Republic to attend the event which will be presented in the model.
Just know there are several details that are not yet confirmed.
Sources at the Ministry of Public Works indicated last night that is not fully established the extent of the changes that take place in the National. "The central theme is the kind of work which the President deems to be accomplished. They can be large or medium works, then start or after it is withdrawn, and that is not decided yet and we have to announce it," commented in the portfolio.
As to the date of commencement of work there are some unknowns. As pointed out by Bío-Bío, would be August 15, which would mean that National could not hold the last two meetings eliminatory of Chile: in Venezuela (September 5) and against Ecuador (October 13), so that act as local Red in the Monumental stadium.
Against Venezuela, at Ñuñoa
However, the communications manager for the ANFP, Claudio Olmedo said "only the match with Ecuador will be played in the Monumental. In Venezuela selection act in the National." This is consistent with the announcement yesterday by the president of the Chilean football, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who said that there is authorization to remove the fence around the National Stadium for the next game. " The managers in discussions with the Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma.
Colo Colo easy for the Red Monumental and U are full of doubt
On the morning of yesterday, sent a motion to ANFP Colo Colo consulting capacity and the distribution of the compound, a potent sign that the Red will return to the Monumental Stadium for the first time since that win by 6-0 on remembered Venezuela in 1997, qualifying for the World Cup of France 98.
The request was welcomed by the club albo, already expressed readiness to facilitate the site two years ago. This time, the ANFP dismissed the idea because the rental National offers lower cost and higher expected revenue.
Today the scenario is different, as there is an agreement between Colo Colo and ANFP pay for it part of its historical debt to the body through a generous discount on their stadium lease.
"In addition, revenues for ANFP may be higher because the amount of Monumental has more seats in the grandstands of Ocean and Mountains, which are more expensive locations," said a high source of Cacique.
White and Black emphasize that the stadium is perfect. "Even should resembrarla" they say, and they see it as a great opportunity to arrange that the dealership has done in the precincts of Macul.
The readiness alba contrasts sharply with the strong concern that resulted in the University of Chile reported on the National arrangements.
As we know, the blues have had disagreements with Chiledeportes after that body decided to build a hockey stadium in the lawn area where today is located the Caracol Azul.
Federico Valdés, president of Blue Blue (fan group), he admitted that he knew few details of the project, but was quite surprised by the timing, because the U is left without a place to make the local-and Closure Sudamericana, if classified if the stadium was closed after the duel against Venezuela in October. "I imagine that until the end there will be no closing of the qualifying stage. We have not had any official communication," said a leader Terra.cl.
Jim856796 June 28th, 2009, 10:38 PM After August 209, frequent updates are needed of the Estadio Nacional's reconstruction. The reconstruction has to be done within one year. Refreshing the playing area and inserting a moat would require the stadium's first few rows of seating to e removed.

That's not the final design of the roof.
That picture represents the very basic concept for the renovation of the park in which the stadium is placed. This model was proposed years ago just as a very general idea of what the government intended to do with it. In the case of the stadium, it only revealed the intention to build a roof, but that has never been the design of it.
Actually, there is no final design yet. The renovation will be done through different stages, even by different architectural firms. The construction of the roof is part of the last one. There are about 20 firms biding for the final design of the roof which should start to be constructed by April 2010.

Those are not stands!
This is just the first stage of the renovation that involves the reinforcement and impermeabilization of the old concrete structure which has been seriously deteriorated with the pass of the time.
There will be new proper seats (red) in all the stadium's localities once they finish with these works, since that is part of the second stage which also considers other major improvements.
Then, ... the roof-

Jim856796 February 28th, 2010, 06:10 AM ^^You ask was the National Stadium damaged. I know there was a major earthquake in Chile, and it apparently damaged many structures in Concepcion and Vina de Mar, which are west of Santiago. I don't know if any structures in Santiago were damaged, but I know that because of the earthquake, work on the reconstruction of the Julio Martinez Pradanos Stadium may be delayed by a few months. But it is unknown how this earthquake will affect reconstruction works on the National Stadium.
Mr. Fitz February 28th, 2010, 02:08 PM Santiago was affected but not badly, so I wouldn't say there'd be severe damage.

Jim856796 March 27th, 2010, 11:31 PM The stands are still being straightened out and they're in the process of installing seating, even thoughthe roof hasn't been installed yet. Now although the new roof design is still being finalised, shouldn't the old press box and the its cover be removed to make way for the new roof and possibly a new pressbox in place of the old one?
AROK! March 29th, 2010, 04:00 AM the installation of the roof is covered in a second stage

Jim856796 April 4th, 2010, 06:36 AM Are there any plans to bring the stands on the west side closer to the playing area? About the stadium itself, the capacity is gonna look undersized when it is completed.
Earthling April 12th, 2010, 07:46 AM The construction of the roof has been postponed by the government of President Sebastián Piñera due to the financial consequences brought about by the February 27, 2010 earthquake. Although the stadium suffered minor damage from the earthquake, it is still expected to reopen during September 2010.
Jim856796 April 13th, 2010, 01:04 AM Looks like that moat is unable to go all around the stadium. it may interfere with the refurbished athletics track, so that is why the west seating area will be the farthest from the playing area.
Earthling April 18th, 2010, 12:41 AM http://lh6.ggpht.com/_cUcaAINgktM/S8oq62VkLBI/AAAAAAAACNM/G_uM1cXtSiI/techo%202%20copy.jpg
Jim856796 April 18th, 2010, 06:02 AM That an official render or that of some other stadium? If yes, then why is the old pressbox still there? I thought the old pressbox was going to be remved and a new one be built farther back to mazimise the stadium's new capacity.
Jim856796 May 22nd, 2010, 01:18 AM nearly all the seats have been installed, but what happened to the roof installation?
SVN2007 May 27th, 2010, 07:41 PM sorry by my honest opinion, but Chile as considered the most developed South American Country, should demolish this old stadium and build a new one from the ground. Even though with the new roof, I think that it wouldn't be good.

we can't do it, is a national monument. perhaps in the future we will build a 100% national football stadium somewhere

Jim856796 July 13th, 2010, 10:46 PM 1. The new capacity of this stadium is over 47,000.
2. The Estadio Nacional will be the main stadium of the 2014 South American Games. Santiago was recently announced as the host city.
Benn July 13th, 2010, 10:59 PM 47,000? how are they losing 16,000 places? Were the benches really that compact?
Also like the blue seats benches better than red, that fade from blue was intruiging as well.

Juanes777 July 15th, 2010, 07:31 AM Y el techo?
Nacho! July 15th, 2010, 08:19 AM La construcción del techo para el Estadio Nacional se ha aplazado, ya que los primeros gastos del Gobierno son para la resconstrucción de las zonas afectadas por el terremoto y tsunami

kazetuner July 18th, 2010, 08:21 AM ^^ He said the roof's construction has been posponed since the governmet is focusing on reconstructing the areas affected by the earthquake and the tsunami.
in long-term what is the period when the construction of the roof will be start
Raul_Molina July 23rd, 2010, 07:48 PM AL PARECER LAS OBRAS VAN A QUEDAR APLAZADAS POR UN TIEMPO....... LARGO COMO SON TODAS LAS COSAS EN CHILE......... EN MI OPINION ES PLATA MAL GASTADA ES UN ESTADIO ANTIGUO QUE HUBIESE SIDO MEJOR CONSTRUIR POR COMPLETO.
Jim856796 September 15th, 2010, 05:25 AM From Wikipedia:
On September 12, 2010, during the Chilean bicentennial festivities, President Sebastián Piñera announced that the capacity of the stadium will be increased so as to reach 70.000 seats for the 2014 South American Games that will take place in Santiago.
How is the stadium supposed to be expanded to 70,000 for the South American Games after we reduced it to around 48,000? It cannot be modified because of its status as a protected historical monument. What are we gonna do now before the South American Games?

rafamlopes September 17th, 2010, 05:18 AM dark red seats and light blue track?! It doesn't match...although it looks much better.
barman123 September 17th, 2010, 05:48 AM It is in my list of stadiums that need a renovation or upgrade. The stadium apparently has a lot of bleacher seating, and I hate bleacher seating. It is not an American College Football Stadium. Here is another photo of the stadium:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Estadio_nacional-Chile.jpg
I think it is a fantastic stadium!! Can you tell me more about it please?
leomarques September 17th, 2010, 05:59 AM dark red seats and light blue track?! It doesn't match...although it looks much better.
Dark red + Blue + white = Chile!
BTW, nice pics. The renovation went really good. When will be the re-opening game?
Capital78 September 18th, 2010, 12:46 AM Very beautiful!
Benn September 18th, 2010, 02:21 AM Would have preferred blue seats personally, and actually the fading blue to white look from some the old renders would have been wonderful. Still a good step in the right direction.

so you're saying they should change it because you hate it
and no, good observation, it is not an american college football stadium, but just because it has bleachers doesn't make it one, i wouldn't say they specifically belong to any type of stadium, it is simply one of the earliest forms of seating in stadiums and is some visible history which is always nice especially in a national stadium
but i do agree it does need a make over, good to see they're not making any drastic changes, its a fantastic venue for watching football at, brilliant atmosphere
Jim856796 September 18th, 2010, 06:20 PM ^^Sir, it already had that makeover, apparently.
Cafetëro September 21st, 2010, 11:04 PM Amazing stadium, great renovation made to the main arena of Chile. On the future with the roof will be one of the best stadiums of L.A.
Cristobal_illo September 24th, 2010, 07:01 AM ^^And with more seats...!
adicto al vicio September 26th, 2010, 12:21 PM What happened to the designs of chairs that appeared originally in the project?
The blue of the athletic track is bad chosen, is very clear.
chilespain September 28th, 2010, 06:01 AM The best option to increase the stadium capacity is to lower the level playing field and retractable bleachers will be installed on the athletics track, the front can not be modified because it is a National Historic Monument, and also should not be demolished . But for the games of the selection of Chile the ideal would be to increase the capacity of the Monumental stadium of Colo-Colo, the public will be nearer to the playing field and this expansion will go smoothly up to 70,000 people.
rafamlopes September 28th, 2010, 07:03 AM Dark red + Blue + white = Chile!
BTW, nice pics. The renovation went really good. When will be the re-opening game?
Sorry but there's no excuse to bad taste.
That's the same about Maracanã's current brazilian flat colors seats. It's horrible.
Axelferis September 28th, 2010, 10:25 AM it's just the same! just colors changed?
rafamlopes September 29th, 2010, 09:09 AM it's just the same! just colors changed?
Now they have individual seats, instead of park benches.
