Catamaran plan on hold
THE Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB)’s plans to introduce catamarans for foot passengers plying the island and Butterworth has been put on hold pending approval from the state government.
PPSB managing director Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar said the proposal for the purchase of four catamarans and the construction of infrastructure facilities costing RM28mil was submitted last year.
“There has been some positive response from the state but we are still waiting for the green light,” he told reporters after signing the collective agreement between PPSB and the workers union.
Also present to witness the signing was PPSB chairman Datuk Abdul Latif Abdullah.
In November 2002, Ahmad was reported as saying that the catamarans would be introduced in 2004 as part of PPSB’s RM80mil long-term plan to improve ferry services and trim losses.
He had also said that all existing ferries would be converted for vehicular use once the four fast boats were bought using funds from PPSB’s listing on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE).
The catamarans, costing RM3mil each, would be able to take between 150 and 170 passengers.
The catamarans would reduce waiting time from 10 to six minutes, and the travelling time from 10 to eight minutes.
On the construction of the proposed multi-storey complex to house a bus terminal at the site of the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal which was gutted in a fire several years ago, Ahmad said approval had not been obtained for the project.
“The proposal is now being considered by the Transport Ministry,” he said.
The existing bus terminal is now operating on a temporary basis nearby and causing inconvenience to the aged and handicapped as they have to walk some distance to board buses.

It'll be interesting if there was an express catamaran service running from Batu Ferringhi all the way to the south of the island, with stops along Tg Bungah, Tg Tokong, Gurney Drive, Georgetown, etc. Some waterfront cities like HK and Sydney do use ferries quite extensively for public transport. ;)

yeah.....that's a good idea....water transport would ultimately reduces traffic congestion as well.
My mom's hometown is Pangkor.....even Pangkor used to have 3 different jettys for the ferries! I am not too sure if they stopped at all 3 now as I've not been there in a while....... ;)

It'll be a rather good idea if the state gov't give the green light straight away! To me if it improves the transport service, then give it a go!

Koh: Ferry fare a bit high
BY ZARINAH DAUD
BUTTERWORTH: The state government has agreed in principle to the proposed increase in ferry fare for foot passengers but suggested that the Penang Port Sdn Bhd introduce a more reasonable rate.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said yesterday a ?fairer ferry fare would be fair? so that the lower income group would not feel the pinch.
He said the state fully understood that the increase was necessary because PPSB had been incurring losses from its ferry operations over the years.
?This is the first time that Ihear of PPSB wanting to increase the fare from 60sen to RM2. To me, the increase is a bit high,? he said after launching the state-level Unity Week celebration at SM Teknik Butterworth here yesterday.
?I hope the company will review the proposed new fare for the benefit of commuters using the service daily. It is better to increase the fare slightly and enjoy higher volume of ferry users than enjoying a higher ferry fare but record a lower number of users.?
Dr Koh was commenting on a report quoting PPSB managing director Ahmad Ibni Hajar as saying the company planned to increase the fare to between RM1.50 and RM2 to offset its RM10mil operational costs.
Ahmad said on Friday that PPSB could no longer absorb the increasing cost and had been subsidising the fares for far too long. The fare for foot passengers now is 60 sen for adults and 30 sen for children.
Dr Koh said PPSB should improve services to justify the increased fare. The last fare increase was in 1996 when PPSB increased the price from 40 sen, which had remained the same since 1959, to 60 sen.
When asked about the announcement on the increase after the general election, Dr Koh said it was not a fair comment.
?I agree with the argument that the fare of 40 sen in 1959 could be equivalent to about RM2 now. But it is better for the management to introduce a periodical fare review, instead of announcing a drastic hike after a prolonged period.?

Penang marina set to be largest in South-East Asia
PENANG: When the RM44mil Church Street Pier marina opens in November, it will be the largest in South-East Asia.
State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Datuk Koay Kar Huah said the largest marina in the region now was in Singapore.
He said the Church Street Pier marina was now about 80% completed.
“When finished, the marina will have 102 berths for yachts and boats of various sizes,” he said yesterday.
He said the marina’s opening would coincide with the Selangor Royal Regatta which would be held then.
“The regatta will start in Port Klang, move to Penang and end in Langkawi,” he said.
Koay said restaurants serving seafood and Western food would be set up at the marina.
“There is also a two-metre wave breaker to protect the yachts and boats,” he added.

Projects to help revive tourism industry
PENANG will have two major tourism projects located in the heart of the city.
The two projects will be the marina at Weld Quay and the international cruise centre at Swettenham Pier.
Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon estimated that the projects would be completed in two and a half years.
“This means that yachts from the region will be able to stop in Penang.
“The redevelopment of Swettenham Pier into an international cruise centre will also attract large ocean liners to stop here,” he said.
Dr Koh said the two projects should help revitalise the tourism sector.
Dr Koh was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Wisma Great Eastern Penang building at Light Street on Monday.
Also present were Great Eastern director and chief executive officer Alex Foong Soo Hah and Architects Six-One Sdn Bhd managing director Tay Lee Soon.
Dr Koh said there were also plans to expand the museum and art gallery.
Dr Koh said there were many treasures in George Town that had yet to be discovered, enhanced and fully exploited.
“We have applied to be listed on the United Nations Educational, Scien- tific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage sites.
“What makes us eligible are some of the unique treasures we have.
“For example, along Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling, we have the Mesjid Kapitan Keling, a heritage mosque, the Sri Maha Mariamman temple and the Goddess of Mercy temple.
“Where else in the world can you see the houses of worship of the world’s major religions along one street, juxtapose in such a unique manner?” he asked.
Foong said Wisma Great Eastern Penang would be built adjoining an existing heritage building which had been in existence since the early 20th century.
“The total development cost will be about RM51mil which includes land and the existing heritage building.
“Wisma Great Eastern will be located at a conservation site where government buildings and European residences were built in the early 20th century.
“As an established company rich in history, Great Eastern is proud to be involved in such a project to conserve local heritage sites in the country,” he said.
Foong said when completed, the building would have five storeys with a nett lettable space of 82,000sq ft.
On a separate matter, Dr Koh said the state Barisan Nasional website (www. bnpenang.org. my), which had not been updated for nine years, would be updated in two months time.
Dr Koh said he had given the volunteers, responsible for maintaining the site, two months to update it.
He was commenting on a recent report by Sin Chew Jit Poh that the state had failed to provide proper maintenance to a site.

Escalator for ferry terminal
A two-way escalator will soon be built at the Butterworth ferry terminal for the convenience of foot passengers, especially the elderly and pregnant women.
Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) general manager (marine services) Capt Seow Yong Him said the company had budgeted RM600,000 for the project.
He said construction was scheduled to start next month and to be completed in two months, adding that the escalator was expected to be operational by year-end.
He also said four public toilets would be built at the same terminal at a cost of RM70,000, with work expected to start next month.
Capt Seow said the average waiting time for a ferry had been reduced from 10 minutes to eight minutes after PPSB increased the number of ferries from six to seven during peak hours and from five to six during non-peak hours. Peak hours are from 7am to 9am and from 4pm to 6pm.
On the impact of the increase in ferry fares from May 1, he said the number of cars using the service had dropped from an average of 3,800 before the increase to 3,500.
He, however, said PPSB had anticipated the drop as 300 cars were not regular users.
Capt Seow said the number of foot passengers and other types of vehicles using the service remained unchanged despite the fare increase.
Since May 1, the fares were increased by up to 100% from 60 sen to RM1.20 for foot passengers, 70 sen to RM1.40 for bicycles, RM7 to RM7.70 for cars, and RM1.40 to RM2 for motorcycles. Lorries, vans and buses are charged RM13.20, up from RM12.

Penang commission to build complex, ferry terminal
Updated : 11-07-2005
Media : Business Times
THE Penang Port Commission (PPC) will build a complex on its land which housed the previous complex and a ferry terminal, which will be completed in as early as two years.
Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Md Aris Md Ariffin said PPC had submitted its proposal to the Economic Planing Unit of the Prime Minister¡¦s Department for approval.
He said the ferry terminal would replace the previous one that was torn down after it collapsed in 1988.
Construction work on the project, estimated about RM85 million, will commence after MPSP approves the plan upon getting the greenlight from the Federal Government,he said.
Md Aris was speaking to reporters in Penang recently after MPSP officials and its councillors were briefed on the project by representatives from the PPC.
He said the six-storey building will have 43 covered bus bays and 28 taxi bays on the ground floor, while the second floor will have food courts and air-conditioned ticket counters for out-station buses.
The third floor will be allocated to department stores while entertainment and recreational centres will be housed at the fourth floor,he added.

Penang's marina set to start operations in Nov
Updated : 16-08-2005
Media : Business Times
Story By : SHARANJIT SINGH
THE RM44 million public marina at Church Street Pier, which is touted as a project that could turn Penang into a hub for mega yachts and boost tourist arrivals, is set to be operational by November.
The project, managed by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) and funded by the Federal Government, is in the finishing stages and the contractor is expected to hand it over to PPSB in October.
PPSB managing director Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar said the marina will be able to accommodate 102 boats and yachts and includes a clubhouse and a restaurant.
He said PPSB hopes to have the marina ready in time for the Port Klang-Penang-Langkawi regatta which is scheduled to be held sometime in November.
However, this will depend on the issuance of a certificate of occupancy by the Penang Island Municipal Council.
Ahmad said the marina had generated a lot of interest from yacht owners in this region, especially Singapore.
"There is a lot of interest in this marina as it is not only going to be cheaper but also because of other things that Penang has to offer," he said, adding that the marina would result in economic spin-offs for all tourism-related service providers in the state ranging from hotels, retail and food outlets, tour and limousine firms to dockyards and ship maintenance suppliers.
However, Ahmad said there is a need for greater cooperation between relevant agencies, including the Tourism Ministry, and PPSB to promote the marina.
He said while the state agencies had been talking to PPSB, there seems to be a lack of response from federal agencies.
Since the inner city marina is still under construction, visiting yachts to Penang since early this year have been anchoring around the port anchorage at Swettenham Pier.
Asked to comment about PPSB's long-awaited listing plans, Ahmad said the Economic Planning Unit has yet to make a decision on the matter.
PPSB, a firm owned by the Minister of Finance Inc, has met with officials of the ministry and the EPU several times to get approval for the flotation.

Penang Port set to see its glorious trading days
BY K RUKA
PLANS to turn Penang Port into a showcase model for the maritime industry and its impending public listing next year are signs that glorious trading days are set to return to the oldest port in the country.
Penang Port Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Abdul Latif Abdullah said the port which had a long heritage legacy, could turn itself into what it was before – a vibrant port with a hive of activities when it was still a free port until 1969.
“We should by 2010, hopefully, look at being one of the best managed ports with integrated operations performance in the country,’” he said in an interview.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/11/7/maritime/mt_28latif.jpg
The project would involve extending berth lengths to a further 200m to make a 900m berth at NBCT, says Abdul Latif.
He is looking forward to the port handling new dimension ships, improving productivity, and has also proposed for a maritime academy similar to those in Scandinavian countries, to cater for maritime specialists in the country.
“Scandinavian countries have small population but they have among the best trained maritime experts. This is something we can replicate and do in Penang,” he said.
Abdul Latif said the Cape Town's working harbour, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and Singapore's Durian House were among examples to attract investors and tourists.
“These are some of the water-front development which can be carried out but it has to be consistent, localised and internationally appealing,” he said.
Abdul Latif, 55, said with so much of potential to unlock in the port and its surrounding areas, the right investors, strategies and re-engineering could give bountiful boost to Penang’s economy.
“Bear in mind, Penang Port not only caters to its hinterland but also Thailand, Sumatran and the Indian sub continent market,” he said, adding that it was time to think out of the box.
Escaping the maritime radar, losing out to competition and having to adhere to corporatisation policies for a while now, he said it was time to take the “bull by its horns”.
Planned two years ago, he is hopeful that the public listing exercise would take off next year, since all paperwork and necessary submissions have been completed.
“This will mean that we can have additional funds to manage new equipment for gradual upgrading, expansion and related development plans for the port,” he said, adding that it could run into hundreds of millions.
Abdul Latif said there were on-going development initiatives to improve the port's productivity under the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) Phase IIB Expansion project, enabling NBCT to handle 1 million TEUs per annum in 2006.
In 2004, the port recorded a 4.6% increase in total throughput handling and its container increase was 12.2% compared to 2003.
For the first nine months of this year, the port recorded a 3% increase, handling 589,521 TEUs compared to 575,055 TEUs for the same period in 2004.
In terms of cargo throughput, Penang Port handled 18 million freight tonnes compared to 17.4 million in 2004.
The project would involve extending berth lengths to a further 200m to make a 900m berth at NBCT.
“Also 25 hectares will be reclaimed for container yard facilities and a second access bridge will be constructed with requisite equipment provided,” he said.
Abdul Latif said the port would also consolidate all container handling operations to NBCT and there would be two additional berths at the Butterworth Wharves to cater for break bulk cargo.
Scheduled for completion in 2007, he said it was a cost saving measure while maximising on human capital and improving container-handling activities.
Presently, containers are handled at the Butterworth Container Terminal (BWCT) and NBCT, with a combined container handling capacity of 770,000 TEUs per annum.
The port currently does between 18 and 23 moves per hour, depending on the vessel build-up.
Among other expansion plans are the construction of a vehicle export terminal (RORO) and the construction of a second vegetable oil terminal, to meet anticipated increase at the Butterworth Wharves.
Butterworth Wharves has four berths with its wharf measuring 715m and with depths between 7.5m and 9m.
It can handle a variety of break bulk cargo such as palm oil in drums, refined sugar, bag rice, iron and steel products, and manufactured goods.
Equipment available at present includes 39 forklifts to handle three tonnes, eight prime movers (16 tonnes), right trailers (16 tonnes) and two heavy lift forklifts (10 tonnes).
The port also has a vegetable oil tanker pier (VOTP), located south of Butterworth Wharves.
This VOTP is linked via overhead pipelines to facilitate direct loading and discharging of edible oils to privately owned storage tank farms.
The Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal (PBCT) is also located here to handle dry bulk, non-edible liquid bulk and dangerous liquid bulk cargo.
Penang Port is also unique because it provides ferry service, linking Georgetown on the island to Butterworth, with PPSB operating a fleet of eight ferries.
Penang Port handles some of the largest cruise vessels in the world at Swettenham Pier on Penang Island. At present, Swettenham Pier has a linear berth of 366m in length and an alongside depth of 9.5m ACD.
Abdul Latif said there were also plans to redevelop Swettenham Pier into an international cruise terminal to cater for larger cruise vessels.
Enhancing cargo handling and the ferry service, the PPSB also provides ancillary facilities such as pilotage, towage, security, fire-fighting, and ship repair. The port’s container services unit was the first of PPSB’s business units to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification.
Penang port is managed and operated by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), a corporate entity set up under the Government’s privatisation policy.
The port is accessible via the North Channel and South Channel. While the North Channel approach has a depth of 10.7m A.C.D, the South Channel is restricted to vessels with a draft of 5.8m A.C.D and less and air-draft of not exceeding 28m because of the 13.5km Penang Bridge.
A deepwater port overlooking major shipping lanes in the Straits of Malacca, Penang Port is a choice for traders within the Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand growth triangle and the Asia Pacific region.
It is strategically located along the Northwest coast of Peninsula Malaysia and serves one of the busiest trade routes, linking the country to more than 200 ports worldwide. Convenient, well located and loaded with a rich history, Abdul Latif is enthusiastic about Penang Port.
“I want to see Penang Port coming back to its glory days,” he said, adding that the port was the training ground for many old timers in the industry. Having said that, he quotes a Prophet Mohamed saying, “An organisation from the lowest to the highest level, should encompass knowledge and matured skill to ensure transparency and excellence. Failing to have this, be prepared for ruin.”

so, i guess..it is not too possile:DN, i do not hope they built such tall building at that area too;)

i like to see some tall buildings there because of the big hole in the skyline in that area. but of course, not too high or it will spoil the environment of the area, like KOMTAR. the design must blend into the area too. then the area will look like new york or London:D however, i doubt the planning in Penang will be that good to meet all my requests he he....

Penang set to be cruise hub
By SIOW YUEN CHING
GOOD news for seafarers all over the world and local sailing enthusiasts!
The country's first inner city marina, the Tanjung City Marina in Penang, is now completed and set to be fully operational next year.
Formerly known as the Church Street Pier, the RM44mil marina is strategically located in the bustling city of George Town.
Occupying 1.6ha of the coastal land adjacent to the Weld Quay ferry terminal, the marina is also a stone's throw away from Butterworth on the mainland.
“One step ashore and the city is right on the doorstep of the marina,” said Penang Port Sdn Bhd marina manager Capt Md Suyod Suhaimi.
Tanjung City Marina, located on the waterfront of George Town with berthing facilities for up to 140 vessels, is set to become a port of call for yachts.
The marina is situated at latitude 5° 24.9'N and longitude 100° 20.7'E.
Capt Md Suyod said upgrading works for the 108-year-old pier started two years ago and was completed recently.
“The marina is not fully operational yet as we are still installing some of the amenities.
“However, we can receive any yacht wishing to anchor at the marina now,” he said.
Capt Md Suyod said boat owners would only need to pay for docking fees, adding that the charges would be cheaper without imposition of membership or club fees.
The marina has 102 berths and can accommodate up to 140 yachts and boats of various sizes.
“The walk-on pontoons are built entirely free floating with power and water connections,” he said.
The marina will be equipped with facilities and services, such as Customs, immigration and port clearance, 24-hour security, electrical and water supply, shower rooms, toilets, refuelling facilities, laundry service and repairs as well as maintenance services.
There will also be a cafe, a restaurant and convenient stores at the marina.
With the new marina, the state government hopes to turn the Pearl of the Orient into an international cruise centre by attracting sailing vessels from all over the world.
Capt Md Suyod said enquiries about the marina came from as far as the United States, Europe and Australia even before its completion.
He said the Raja Muda Inter-national Regatta would be held at the marina from Nov 21 to Nov 23.
The regatta will start in Port Klang, move to Penang and end in Langkawi,” he said, adding that about 40 boats were expected to participate in the event.

Allocate Funds To Turn Penang Port Into Tourism Port - Call
Updated : 19-11-2005
Media : Bernama
PENANG, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- To turn Penang Port into a successful tourism port in the next two years, the state government should allocate a budget to transform the facilities and historical places around the area into a more lively tourism attraction landmark.
Making the call today, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) Managing Director Datuk Ahmad Ibni Hajar said funds could be allocated through the State Tourism Action Council.
He said the state government could also coordinate and support Penang Port to facilitate the area with more tourism products, including converting it into a waterfront garden with restaurants, coffee houses and hotels like the ports in Singapore and Sydney.
"This is a new development area for tourism in the state with the completion of the RM44 million Tanjung City Marina which is set to be fully operational next year and the redevelopment of the Swettenham Pier into an international cruise terminal for which we are still awaiting approval from the federal government.
"If the federal government approved the project, it will be ready within the next two to three years," he told reporters at the PPSB Hari Raya Open House.
On Tanjung City Marina, Ahmad said the Raja Muda International Regatta would he held at the marina from Monday to Wednesday.
The regatta, to be participated by about 40 boats, will start in Port Klang, move to Penang and end in Langkawi, he said.
The marina, equipped with facilities and services such as customs, immigration and port clearance, 24-hour security, electrical and water supply, has 102 berths and can accommodate up to 140 yachts and boats of various sizes.
On ferry services, Ahmad said PPSB has to bear another RM4 million in additional operational costs next year due to the fuel price increase.
He said since the ferry fare increase from 60 sen to RM1.20 on May 1, PPSB was not making any profit but has to subsidise the service between RM13 million and RM14 million a year.
"PPSB will stick to the "old service" without looking to another solution if the public are not willing to pay extra for the service, but if they are willing to pay more, only then we can think of investing in speedboats," he said.
On April 29, he suggested to the PPSB board to buy four speedboats, costing about RM4 million each, while its eight existing ferries be converted into vehicle ferries.
Without the increase in ferry fares, PPSB had to subsidise about RM400 million for the services until the concession, which started in 1994, ended in 2023, he added.

Tourists take on our trishaw
By ONG YEE TING
ENJOYING a ride on a trishaw is nothing new to foreign visitors to Penang but pedalling the three-wheeler themselves is a totally different experience.
Still huffing and puffing after he had pedalled three rounds around the concourse area of the Tanjung City Marina in Weld Quay, Yaroslav Kyreyev, 25, grinned happily while describing the experience as “excellent”.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/12/10/north/poywheel%202.jpg
Trishaw race participants waiting impatiently to be flagged off.
“It’s very different from riding a bicycle; much more tiring as my two team mates seated in the trishaw added weight to it,” he said after winning a trishaw race organised by Tourism Malaysia re-cently. It was one of the activities in the ‘Make It Malaysia’ (MIM) programme.
MIM is an educational programme for the foreign travel trade organised by Tourism Malaysia. The 92 participants spent nine days visiting Penang, Kedah, Pulau Langkawi, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya from Nov 30.
They comprised tour managers, travel agents and media people from Britain, Norway, Den-mark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Rus-sia.
The MIM participants had earlier taken a heritage tour of George Town. .
Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board director-general Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf said the MIM was another effort to promote Malaysia as a top holiday destination.
A fly-and-drive concept has been introduced to MIM whereby the participants are given the op-portunity to drive Malaysian-made vehicles to certain locations.
Patricia Cooper, a travel agent from Britain, said she had always loved Malaysia, especially the friendly people and the scrumptious food.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/12/10/north/poywheel%201.jpg
It is a neck-to-neck battle to the finishing line for these two foreign teams.
“I came to Penang once 12 years ago. I noticed there are now more hotels and resorts here,” she said.
Journalist Rolf ‘Rosli’ Wulff, from Norway, said Malaysia was a “second home” to him as he had been to the country at least six times.
“I love the harmonious setting with people of different cultures, religions and races living peacefully in the same land,” he said.

Malaysia's boating sector gets a boost
By MARINA EMMANUEL
December 9 2005
MALAYSIA’S recreational boating industry is set to get a shot in the arm with the introduction of a boat-share programme soon.
Penang-based Pen-Marine Sdn Bhd plans to launch the country’s first boat-share scheme, in a bid to make the boating life within reach of Malaysians.
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BT/Monday/Column/20051209000255/Article/Current_News/BT/Images/dailyn/ohboat.jpg
“Our aim is to enable more Malaysians to enjoy a world-class boating experience without the hassles of boat ownership,” the company’s managing director Oh Kean Shen told the Business Times in Penang.
He said the boat-share programme, based on models adopted in the US and Australia, would be launched during the “Nautical Lifestyle” event from December 16-18 at the Tanjung City Marina in George Town.
“This will be the first time boating enthusiasts will be given an opportunity to try fractional ownership, which is now the alternative way to own a boat in a practical and exciting manner,” Oh said.
Malaysian-owned boats — comprising pleasure boats and motor yachts — currently total 1,200 and are estimated to be worth RM500,000. About 90 per cent of these boats are owned by Malaysians, noted Oh.
“There must also be financing facilities provided for the purchase of boats, along with boat handling courses and the regulation on boat handling licences and registration, so the banks and insurance companies would support the industry more readily,” he added.
Pen-Marine was set up in 1988 with the goal of promoting and developing the recreational boating industry.
Apart from carrying out boat repairs and building several mega-yachts through its representation of Heesen Yachts from Holland, Pen-Marine also represents a variety of boat builders ranging from Taiwanese-built yachts to the highest Italian range of brands of Ferretti Group yachts, which include Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Bertram and Apreamare.
Oh, who also manages his family’s Penang shipyard Limbongan Batu Maung on the southwestern tip of Penang island, said the coming “Nautical Lifestyle” event organised by Pen-Marine would showcase between 8 and 10 motor yachts and sailing boats, valued close to RM20 million.
The motor yachts will include the Ferretti 480, Appreamare 10 and Aeimut 62 and sponsors include BMW, premium timepiece makers Jaeger LeCoultre and The British Masters, along with K&N Kenanga and Limbongan Batu Maung.
“The event will continue the momentum generated by the recent Raja Muda Regatta and the Monsoon Cup held in Malaysia,” he added.

Pen-Marine introduces boat-sharing concept
By Regina Williams
Boating and yachting, has been usually associated with the affluent, but now, with the boat-sharing concept introduced by Pen-Marine Sdn Bhd, owning a boat is possible for more Malaysians.
Pen-Marine managing director Oh Kean Shen said boating in Malaysia is still in its infancy, but over the past two years it has caught on among many affluent Malaysians. Malaysians own 90% of the 1,200 luxury boats and yachts worth RM500 million in the country.
The boat-sharing concept was launched at the “Nautical Lifestyle” event held at the Tanjung City Marina in Penang on Dec 16. The three-day event showcases eight to 10 luxury boats and yachts including Ferretti, Apprea Mare and Aeimut.
As for Penang, the newly completed marina in George Town will enable them to leave their boats in a safe and secure facility.
"Most would be reluctant to invest in a yacht as they cannot use the boat often enough to justify the cost and time commitment. The boat-sharing programme is not a time sharing programme but offers true fractional ownership of a boat.
“Pen-Marine's boat sharing plan is designed to allow four to six owners to use their boat one week out of every four to six weeks,” he added.
The joint owners, Oh said, share out the operational costs including maintenance, berthing fees, annual servicing, insurance and skippering fees.
Pen-Marine's professional team keeps the boat maintained in immaculate condition and those who do not know how to steer a boat will also be put through a port skipper course.
Oh said, a co owner can opt to sell his share anytime unlike a fully owned boat, which would have to be sold as one unit. He said the boat co owners could also charter their respective slots.
Under the boat-sharing concept, a company is formed for the sole purpose of buying a boat and shares will be divided into four to six equal parts.
A management company will be appointed to manage the boat and a weekly roster is drawn up so that all co-owners can use the vessel six days every four to five weeks.
A formal contract is prepared between each owner and Pen Marine and will protect the interest of all the co-owners. Owners then pay an upfront fee and monthly payment of operational costs. Management fees will be collected on a quarterly or half-yearly basis.

WHAT better way to celebrate New Year’s Day than to take a relaxing sunset cruise on the beautiful waters of Penang?
With this in mind, about 60 people comprising locals and visitors joined the Penang Evening Cruise on Jan 1.
On board the double-decked MV Mars, the guests enjoyed scenic sights including the state’s most significant landmark – the majestic Pe-nang Bridge.
They were rewarded with spectacular views of the bridge with the setting sun as the backdrop.
During the two-hour cruise which covered 20 nautical miles, they passed by the coastal areas of Pulau Jerejak, the Esplanade, Gurney Drive and the clan jetties in Weld Quay.

What better way to welcome 2006 than to take a leisurely evening cruise to savour the coastal sights including the clan jetties and view the Penang Bridge(pictured here)up close!
Among the tourists were British couple Gill Dennis, 29, and her husband John Howarth, 28.
Dennis, a re-cruitment consultant, said: “We are resi-ding in New Zealand and had gone home to Britain for Christmas. On our way back to Auckland, we decided to stop by Penang for a week.
“It’s our first time in Malaysia and we can’t stop taking photos of the country's beauty.”
It was an enjoyable family activity for the Suahs from Bukit Mertajam.
Art teacher Suah Kee Seng, 43, said they were excited because this was their first time on a cruise.
“I jumped at the opportunity of booking the whole family for the trip when I read about it in a newspaper.
“This is an ideal way of enjoying the island from another perspective – the sea,” added Suah, who went on the cruise with his wife, Heng Lee Choo and their two children.
Heng, 39, said they had earlier spent the day shopping at Gurney Plaza.
The passengers who paid RM60 each, were treated to snacks and drinks during the jaunt.
They left Swettenham Pier at 6pm. The vessel’s six-member crew was led by Captain Stevanus.
A similar cruise was held on New Year’s Eve for some 100 guests.
The ‘maiden’ cruises were jointly organised by Bintang Biru, Tour East and Tong- yan Travel, and endorsed by Tourism Penang.
Tongyan Travel managing director Datuk Albert Tan said the cruise was the brainchild of state executive councillor Teng Chang Yeow and was aimed at offering another tourism product for visitors and locals in Penang.
“If successful, we’ll conduct the cruise on a regular basis. We hope to have one during Chinese New Year as there will be many people coming home for the festive season,” he added.
He urged the authorities to install special night lighting to illuminate the coastal areas and their monuments.
Tan said special cruises could also be conducted for companies wishing to hold private functions on board a vessel.
For details, call Bintang Biru at 04-2271618, Tour East at 04-2274532 or Tongyan Travel at 04-2291199.

Penang Port lures foreign boat owners to marina
By Regina William
Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) will embark on a marketing blitz in Singapore, Australia, Phuket, Hong Kong and China to promote the spanking new Tanjung City Marina among boat owners in these countries.
PPSB managing director Datuk Ahmad ibni Hajar said PPSB has targetted to "lure" at least 30 boat, yacht or super yacht owners to make the marina their home by year-end.
With 102 bays ranging from 11m to 50m, the RM45 million marina which was opened last October, can accommodate 140 boats, yachts and even super yachts of various sizes.
So far, more than 160 boats from Australia, the United States and Europe have called on the marina since its opening.
"We need to market the marina in these countries and I am confident that we can fill up the whole marina by next year as our rates are much cheaper than even Singapore.
"Our target is especially foreign boat owners who are now in these countries and we are not competing with Langkawi, as ours is a much more international target.
"Penang is already well known abroad for its rich history and heritage and all we need is that personal touch to market the marina to them," he said in an interview.
Ahmad said currently PPSB was in the midst of leasing out the land services, namely the two restaurants, convenience stores and a cafeteria.
Other services which are already in place include shower rooms, rest rooms, diesel bunker and water supply for the boats, internet hot spot, wifi with broadband services, facsimile, photocopying, mail/courier services, 24 hours security, customs, immigration and port clearance facilities and a business centre.
Other facilities include laundry, galley supplies, engine repairs and maintenance services, hull-cleaning, housekeeping and repair services from shops in the vicinity as the marina is located right in the middle of the city.

Marinas add lustre to Pearl of the Orient
May 11 2006
BusinessTimes (http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BT/Thursday/Corporate/BT566346.txt/Article/index_html)
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BT/Thursday/Corporate/BT566346.txt/Article/Current_News/BT/Images/dailyn1/ctmarina.jpg
THE Pearl of the Orient is gaining popularity as a marine playground and yachting hub, with the opening of the Tanjung City Marina (TCM) in George Town's inner city last year and another marina planned by a private developer.
Touted as the country's first inner city marina - where the century-old Church Street Pier stands - TCM has infused a breath of fresh air to Penang's waterfront, where ferries ply up and down the Penang Chanel between the island and Butterworth on the mainland.
Occupying 1.6ha of land adjacent to the Penang Ferry Terminal, the RM45 million public marina - funded by the Federal Government and managed by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) - has 102 berths ranging from 11 to 50 metres and is able to accommodate up to 140 yachts and boats of different sizes.
PPSB marina manager Captain Md Suyod Suhaimi promises more facilities in a few months such as bunkering services (filling or replenishing a ship with fuel), two restaurants on stilts and a cafeteria, along with coin-operated laundry services.
This is expected to take off soon with the appointment of Penang-based Tanjung Marina Management Sdn Bhd as an anchor tenant at TCM.
The company will also assume the management of the marina's onshore operations.
Also lending value to the marina is the RM65 million redevelopment of the adjoining Swettenham Pier into an international cruise terminal.
Penang is also home to three anchorages comprising the Seagate, Junk and E-Gate anchorages located at different parts of the island.
On the southwestern end of the island lies the Marina Batu Uban operated by the Marine Department which boasts 35 berths for vessels up to 12 metres.
Although small and described by boaters as "unpretentious" owing to the friendly and helpful marine officers there, the marina continues to be a favourite among cruisers.
Across town at the fast developing sea-inspired "Seri Tanjung Pinang" project, a "pleasure" marina is set to join Penang's existing two marinas.
"A bustling marina and the vibrant, colourful life that surrounds it is the focal point of Phase One of Seri Tanjung Pinang," says E & O Property Development Bhd's marketing and sales director K.C Chong.
While no price tag has been attached to the marina project, Chong adds that it will be made available to boats that are shuttling from other nearby marinas as well as to yachting enthusiasts that may come from places like Singapore, Thailand, Lumut, Johor and Langkawi.
"The marina will have about 40 docking berths and can accommodate boats of up to 120 feet, equipped with berthing facilities," he notes.

well Miami has a lotta marinas and they are all full! doubt that Penang couod beat Miami..especially Miami beach...the yachts are freakin awesome...the local goverment gotta make it affordable for middle income to have access to such boats and yachts, heard bout the time sharing scheme...that is a good idea tho. I doubt Penang's marina could even beat Port Dickson or Langkawi let alone Miami. Miami is one of the larger hubs in the world for pleasure crafts......I think the whole of Miami .......esp Fort Lauderdale had more pleasure crafts than South East Asia!
And like Leeigh had said - American pleasure crafts are HUGE and AWESOME!
Just look at the size of some of their pleasure boats for example: Octopus and Rising Sun......you'll pretty get the idea

It's not hard to solve this problem, gov willing to invest some money to this marina, offer sightseeing ferry service, lower the boat rent so it can be access by lower incomers too not only Mid. and High only. For lower incomers this could be once a year family vacation. You live once, so live it up.....In international, this could be a prmotion to foreigners, 3 nights rent, sail to the nearest beautiful beaches........have the view just like cruise, reminded me of Bermuda..lol

Penang got two megaproject bridge and monorail....quite alot what.
Penang should get that during the 8th Malaysia Project, and not 9th.
If they start now at 9th, meaning only at 10th Malaysia Project we will get it.
The bridge? The design of the bridge like only crossing a river but not sea.

9MP has been announced more than a year ago, yet everyday we read in newspaper was IDR IDR IDR IDR. Save for a small section for Penang Second Bridge (has yet to start piling works), and Penang Monorail (so long to study route allignment although they already did the research years ago). Tender has yet to be given.
9MP is a five-year plan. It's already entered second year but heard very few news about Northern Corridor and East Coast corridor. Again it's IDR IDR IDR. If they can plan IDR in less than 3 months why can't they do the same thing with Northern Corridor and East Coast Corridor? It's all political here. Well, i have to accept it because it's Pak Lah who govern the country not me.
The only visible project is expansion of Penang Bridge. PORR has yet to start, should be completed under 8MP.
I dont really mind about the bridge design of Second Penang Bridge, as long as they build it, but it's kinda restrict sea traffic where they can only enter the Penang Port from North Channel.

change into a better or worse?
but indeed melaka city landscape is much better now...especially the river bank...
i saw alot of construction in Melaka during my two years in MFA. Now it's a better place to live, i'm not saying Melaka is better than Penang but the chief minister worked really hard to make the state better.

Malacca will not surpass Penang maybe within this 10 or 20 years but we cannot guarantee that Penang will remain its position as Malaysia second largest city forever. Several cities in Malaysia are catching up fast.
Penang state government and the government aggencies are just not capable of developing and maintaning this once the most developed centre in Malaysia. I shall say they are just INEFFICIENT!
But sometimes we cannot blame Penang state government because the real power of detemining the development policy lies in the hand of fedaral government.
The biggest problem that Penang faces is lack of fund to maintain and develop the state. Penang has no natural resourses, thus it's very dependent on the fund from federal government and yet federal government cannot fulfill the needs of Penang. This contributes to the deterioration of Penang in many aspects.
Hope that under NCER, fund will be injected into Penang to boost its economy and infrastucture.

For me, they don't want to develop penang because penang once is opppsition strong hold.
Penang is one of the major tax payers states. So where is all the tax money go?
Melaka is really a nice place and well organised.

NO WAY...if government really want to let Penang to be listed in UNESCO list, they should do something to restore the old shop houses in inner city of Georgetown. When I visited Penang I dont see such effort being carried out by the government. The heritage buildings are just left behind without any restoration, they are ugly! Also, roads in inner city are just terrible! If this kind of conditions continue, dont ever think of being listed in UNESCO heritage list, Penang will be dropped out from the Most Liavable City list within few years time.

to be listed in UNESCO, penang shophouses especially cannot be restored as what singapore did. bcoz let say if we take same action as singapore, the rental will be raised up and the original rentee will lose their traditional activities to Starbucks or McDonalds. so, the 'living heritage' will be lost forever.
what government wants is...a traditional business to be remained intact. so, it involves ppl's money(gov's money) to polish all those shops.
yes, government can simply ask any developer to handle such restoration(easiest way), but it will end like singapore....

the only person who is working hard for Penang Unesco list is Khoo Salma Nasution.
Penang should have get into the list years ago but by the time they want to launch bid federal government stepped in and said "Include Melaka too...save money".
The inclusion of Melaka derailed Penang's entry as UNCESCO's heritage site. Two city cannot make a bid together, they must have one bid each, a separate bid. But what can hardworking Penangite can do? it's federal government decision. We can just only watch their political stunt.
YES I ADMIT PENANGITES ARE SOUR/DISTRUSTFUL to the federal government because they kinda "robbed" Penang's only source of income in the freeport status. Even our demand of LRT fall on deaf ear until PakLah stepped in (his only good deed)
PENANGITE like me who travels everyday and pay RM 7 toll on the Penang Bridge feel "cheated" because it's actually Penang who is giving money to PLUS:
A simple calculation:
cost of Penang Bridge RM 800 million
traffic : 80,000 cars and lorries weekdays, 150,000 on weekends and holidays
toll : RM 7 for cars, RM 1.40 for motorcycle and up to RM 100 for some lorries
do your own math.
Cooltemper said Penang got less attention because we once a opposition's stronghold, may be right but actually it's not. Penang is considered a rich state, but still need government money to be spent on infrastructure project. Yet our lovely government decided to expand non international airport in KT and AS. The actual demand is in Penang where everyday one flight of Air Asia, Adam Air, Kartika, Malaysia Airlines, Lion Air bringing in the patients seeking treatment from Medan. Not counting international flight from Bangkok (twice daily), Taipei Taoyuan, Hong Kong and Seoul.
And a big number of cargo operators. DHL, UPS, FedEx, u name it.
So why dont spend more for Penang. We dont have natural resources. Even our tap water are from Kedah. Kedah is demanding we pay for the water even though they forget it's actually the development spillover from Penang makes Kulim and Sungai Petani a boom town today. And Kedah loan more money from Federal Government surpassing Kelantan!! Pahang, full of timber, also one of big loan defaulter. Speaking of inefficiency actually other state government are more "efficient" than Penang Government. But what can Penang do? They want to do infra jobs but lack of money. You can plan but if you dont have mullah to spend it's same as useless.
Funny you see, Prime Minister cum Finance Minister is from Penang, Second Finance Minister is also from Penang. The one who get the limelight is Johor. Again IDR IDR IDR IDR IDR.

Shophouses and houses in innner city of Georgetown can be restored without altering the architecture of the buildings. It's not neccessary for the shophouses to be restored as what Singapore did, we can make it our own way...Li Jiang in China is a good example.:)
Traditional business still can be carried out, what the restoration emphasizes is to make the buildings look nicer without losing its identity. This is much better then ignoring the pre war buildings and do nothing.:)
Some succesful restoration of pre war buildings in Penang are Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and Han Jiang Ancestrial Temple, both are recipient of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.:)

why penangites feel jealous of IDR? in fact, IDR should be launched long ago, since Tun M's time...but it can't be realized since he has a deep vengeance with singapore. the result? singaporean money goes to Batam instead.
Pak Lah has already said the other 2 economic region, east cost(terengganu/kelantan/pahang) and northern(penang/kedah/perak)economic region is about to be launched, be patience!
btw, Irwin, restoration process is being done recently(and it is not cheap). so, it is uncorrect to say gov just let the pre-war buildings decayed....

Melaka is way older than Penang, as in Melaka still exist shophouse since dutch era in Heeren Steet. so why can't government include Melaka too? to save money? is that bad if gov want to save budget?
the reality why penang and melaka still in waiting list is......the committee of UNESCO view our heritage as 'new' compare to those in europe! not bcoz of joint-bid....

this is a federated state. Government don't want this country to have one super rich state and other are left poor. this is not Philippines or Thailand. you should know better about those 2 countries. they have one rich region (manila/bangkok) but left other region in poverty(Thai's Yala/Narathiwat and Phil's Mindanao)

What penangites complain is not how many projects that penang get during RM-9 or how many big projects the government should implement in Penang...Why penangites complain so much....because what penangites want is a very responsible government, not a ''slow motion'' government, who always promise us so so so so so so so so much , and did so so so so so so so so less...there is always no ending dead line on a certain projects like the bidding for monorail...things should be done by following the schedule...if not i'll clasify these kind of ppl as lack of responsibility..which will finally lead us to no where..if our government is very responsible, talk less do more...and not a government who always give so so so many excuses when they are not doing the best....try to give yr boss so many excuses when u did somthing wrong in the company...i dont think the boss wanna hear that, what the boss want to know is the solution, and settle it immediately...this is happening to penangites..we want to know when they can settle it, and the solution..not giving us a lot of excuses..this is also why we complain..if the goverment is responsible we wouldn't comaplain so much!!
and why so many penangites keep complaining...these already show that the government has did something wrong. If it is just a small number of penangites complain, it mayb because these small no of penangites has a very high expectation..but now, every penangites are comaplaining...can it be every penangites has very high expectation????? No right, so dont try to help our government to create more excuses...ok...this is the fact, accept it and change it..
