Why the diffrence is so big?
I think it is because court is shorter for NCAA so you get more space for stands
likasz May 29th, 2009, 12:47 AM NBA - 28,65
NCAA - 25,6
I don't think that is enough space for 1500 fans.

Ganis June 1st, 2009, 06:52 AM what is the construction method for Arenas with non arch roofing?
hoosier June 3rd, 2009, 07:45 AM It's close to the Citrus Bowl and RIGHT next to I-4.
sdk June 11th, 2009, 03:30 PM What about the Amway Arena. To old?
Benn June 11th, 2009, 10:24 PM To small, not enough suites (26 small ones up top) no club seats. That old story again.
It's no older than the Palace of Auburn Hills or the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, but those are both bigger and with way more premium seating.

I don't see why they couldn't just renovate Amway and add skyboxes, which would've cost about $250 mil, TOPS, and use the hundreds of millions they'd save towards fixing up the Citrus Bowl.

I think the biggest problem with Amway is that theres only one concourse, and I dont think thats easily fixed. Even with $250 million.
Benn June 13th, 2009, 01:01 AM That and the overall capacity is the smallest in the league and retrofitting in boxes would only be easily done at the back edge of the upper deck, which would entail removing a row or to that would be replaced with more spacious suite seating that would drop capacity, and from a salesmans point of view be too far from the court. I really like it, almost as much as Key Arena in Seattle, and it had more seats, more club seats and way more suites, but appearently still didn't cut it economically.
KingmanIII June 13th, 2009, 08:16 AM I think the biggest problem with Amway is that theres only one concourse, and I dont think thats easily fixed. Even with $250 million.
Jim Balsillie's renovation plans for Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario call for the construction of two new concourses to replace the existing one, as well as the addition of about 75 suites, all for C$150-200 million.
Benn June 13th, 2009, 11:07 AM Theres also a lot more space between levels, the alcoves are going to be much smaller and they are adding seating above the back edge of the upper deck, thats not doable here. Don't get me wrong, I am all about renovations and retrofits, and think its kind of absurd that they "need" a new one, but that is what American pro sports have come to.

I just think that the City of Orlando has gone about their sports facilities plan all wrong--they're spending nearly $500M on a new arena (the most expensive ever) and now they don't have any money to renovate the decrepit Citrus Bowl, which could possibly cause them to lose the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowls and crush any hopes of the city ever landing an NFL franchise.
Cheron July 1st, 2009, 09:15 PM I've been at the Amway arena 3times , and i think it is a nice arena , old but nice for the time of 80's. But , the new one will be great ,it will be the greatest arena in the world for many years..... this is Orlando Ladies and gentlemen!!! I am very exciting!! I heard that the all star game of 2012(after Dallas and L.A.) will take place at the new arena, is that true???

I believe they were promised an All-Star Game in the arena's first 5 years. Whether it's 2012 or another year I don't know.
SkyDiveJunkee July 8th, 2009, 10:39 PM The new arena will also serve to reinvigorate the neighborhood it is in with the onslaught of people in an urban environment right downtown. The Amway Arena is unfortunately surrounded by a sea of parking lots in a bad section of downtown, making it a much less lucrative investment.

So where's the money for the Citrus Bowl and performing arts center gonna come from now? Renovating the stadium wouldn't just keep the bowl games in Orlando, it would also greatly improve the city's prospects of landing an NFL franchise.
SkyDiveJunkee July 20th, 2009, 09:34 PM ^It wouldn't, not really. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the JAX Jaguars, and Miami Dolphins are pretty much all the Florida can handle for NFL franchises. There has been no attempts to bring NFL to Orlando.
Money for the Citrus Bowl is currently on hold, indefinitely. The Performing Arts Center is moving forward.

I kinda have a hard time seeing things that way. I think the NFL could thrive just about anywhere you put a franchise, especially with the television and revenue sharing contracts in place.

KingmanIII July 22nd, 2009, 08:42 AM Couldn't the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowls be held at UCF's new stadium?
The Champ's Sports, perhaps.
The Capital One (Citrus) is far too prestigious to be held at a stadium seating fewer than 50,000.
orlandomike August 10th, 2009, 12:17 AM The Orlando Events Center will now be known as the Amway Center, scheduled to open in Fall 2010. The new arena will be 875,000 square feet, cost $380 million to build and have 60 private suites; 4 bunker suites; 2 super suites and 4 party suites.

I think for NCAA games they can create some standing room only. For NBA this isn't really a marketable product but for students it is.

Orlando virtually has no shot of ever getting an NFL franchise. Too many teams as it is in Florida.

Yup. LA is looking to poach the Jaguars among others. The league won't stand in their way.
SkyDiveJunkee January 25th, 2010, 09:20 PM The Jaguars would stand a better chance in Orlando than LA, which has already proven it does not have the market for NFL. Orlando not only would maintain a loyal fan base, it also has the second largest domestic visitors a year.

SkyDiveJunkee January 26th, 2010, 06:44 PM It had difficulty filling it's seats and eventually it's franchise returned to Oakland.

Are you kidding me? You honestly believe the fact that Orlando has a lot of visitors is a good reason for them getting an NFL franchise?
LA is a MUCH bigger metro area and a MUCH larger, #2 in the country, TV market in the country. Look at USC. A college team draws well over 75,000 fans to their home games.

Thank you for exhibiting your lack of knowledge on the situation.
RaiderATO January 27th, 2010, 06:38 AM Thank you for exhibiting your lack of knowledge on the situation.
The Rams moved from Cleveland in 1946 and played in L.A. Memorial Coliseum (sharing it with USC and UCLA). They had some good teams with Roman Gabriel at QB and the Fearsome Foursome on defense. The stadium was way too large (causing TV blackouts), they were sharing it, had a lack of parking, and was in a dangerous neighborhood. LA wouldn't build a new stadium for them, so they moved 30 mi. to Anaheim in 1980.
Owner Georgia Frontiere (soon hated) started shopping the team around to get a new stadium from Anaheim or O.C.. St. Louis committed to a new stadium and in 1995 they moved there.
The Raiders moved into LA in 1982 basically on Al Davis' bravado alone. There was no NFL approval. He also thought he could get renovations done to the Coliseum. LA lowered the field and removed the track and added some amenities. They were fairly successful there, but further renovations couldn't be done due to financial issues brought by the '94 earthquake. In '95 Oakland had promised renovations (a center field grandstand dubbed "Mount Davis") so Davis moved the team back there.
Basically, it's been a poor combination of owners and a giant stadium. A smaller, better suited stadium just might allow a team to thrive there.

What are you basing this on? Because none of us have even stepped foot inside it yet. It's pretty premature to be making comparisons.

If you want to talk best basketball arena in the country then you have to leave out multi-sport arenas. They simply cannot hold up to places like Conseco.

Nothing major though. If you look at picture #1 that Castorvx posted on this page the lightning struck a 6' by 6' section of the roof right below the catwalk from the parking terminal. Firefighters responded quickly and it isn't delaying construction

I don't think it is even close to the best in the country. The exterior has an oddly pieced together look and the overall massing is just banal and awkward. The bowl is okay, but the back row is a long ways from the court and the way premium seating was inserted really pushes the upper level further back. It doesn't have the proximity or coherence of the old arena, granted its got all the bells and whistles and isn't a carbon copy of any other arenas, but I wouldn't call it anything too special (and a case of lazy design).

I lived in Florida for over 12 years and people in Florida have no care on what they look like. They dress so poorly that stores like Lord & Taylor leave the state in the early 1990's, that is a telling sign for style/architecture. One can only do so much with sand and Florida styles in not making it like brick.

Right......because the way we dress here is SOOOOO relevant to the styles of architecture that will be introduced to FL :hm:
and I'm guessing fashion talk is now welcome in an architecture forum(oozing sarcasm)
AgentSpooner July 12th, 2010, 10:59 AM Crappy pic snapped with my phone, taken from my parking area in 55W:
It's actually a nice picture, with the sunset and all. But yeah, like other posts on here, I'm not all that impressed by the exterior design of the arena.
broncoempire July 12th, 2010, 12:41 PM The exterior isn't that much as it's basically another combination of steel and glass to to let natural light into a central lobby and a central plaza that we're seeing built virtually everywhere in the U.S. Not that there is anything wrong with it, nor is there anything really all that innovative that one can do, especially since the same 2-3 architects design every arena in the country. I happen to like the way the interior bowl pays homage to the shape of the old Amway Arena while still incorporating many of the necessary requirements to make it "state-of-the-art."
A crazy question for anyone in the know, but does anyone know what happened to the bunker suites they were planning, as there appear to have been removed from the design?
F-L-A July 15th, 2010, 08:35 AM I'm from Orlando and I like the arena, not too crazy about the exterior but what about it makes some of you guys call it the best in the country?!
The arena itself or its exterior? The Magic have been hyping the arena's "state-of-the-art" features and amenities left and right. In terms of function, it should be one of the best arenas around, otherwise it'll be a disappointment (but still an improvement over the old arena.) That says nothing for its architecture, obviously. I'm not thrilled with it, but it'll do.

It's a great arena, but I still think the $480M should've been split between renovating the old one and the C.B..
SkyDiveJunkee July 15th, 2010, 07:35 PM The former arena had serious limitations and it could not be expanded. The luxury boxes were at the top, when newer arenas now build them lower. The older arena was bypassed for large concerts because it was not big enough to handle them. The NBA pressured Orlando to build a new state of the art arena, so they did. Also, the old arena is within a sea of parking lots; the new one is an urban arena that fits right into the streetscape of downtown Orlando. This is a worthwhile investment.
Citrus Bowl: something needs to be done about it, that's for sure. It's crumbling at the seams. That said, it's hard to justify throwing hundreds of millions of $$ into something that is used less than 10 days a year in these economic times.
The priorities for me have always been in this order:
1) Performing Arts Center (finally breaking ground!)
2) New Arena
3) Citrus Bowl Renovation
At least, as it stands now, we will get the first 2 out of the 3.

I'm just asking in general because I don't know much about the bells and whistles in it. It looks like it's gonna be a nice place. I just kinda really hate the exterior. Just a little...

The exterior isnt that bad is it? Sure its nothing groundbreaking, but it certainly isnt horrible.
SkyDiveJunkee July 16th, 2010, 06:12 PM The Church Street facade, which is the most important aspect of this design, is pedestrian oriented and inviting.
It's important to view this arena as a natural extension of downtown Orlando. It's both making a statement while fitting in, unlike say, American Airlines Arena which is designed to stand on it's own and be a landmark piece. It's just a completely different approach to arena building, and this works well for Orlando's interests in improving the Church Street area. An arena that stood on it's own with no real interact with the existing landscape would really do nothing for downtown.

Jim856796 July 19th, 2010, 06:20 PM after the Amway Centre opens, the city of Orlando will demolish the Amway Arena and the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. It wants to fill the 68-acre piece of land with digital media schools and companies. It will also include housing, seven parks, as well as educational and office space.
