Today Belmont TV Mast is with a height of 387.5 metres the tallest man-made object in the European Union. Nevertheless it may loose this title, as according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belmont_TV_Mast#Height_reduction_controversy it is planned to reduce its height to 351.7 metres, making it the 2nd tallest in UK and the 14th tallest in the European Union ( the tallest structure in European Union will be than Torreta de Guardamar, a 370 metres tall military radio mast in Spain).

Agreed, although I've grown up with Winter Hill Transmitter and despite moving from Wigan to Southport (then Back) and going uni in Preston it's always been there like so, I can see how people like them (I know I'd be gutted if they got rid of WH).

Great Britain might be not be the most efficiently-run nation on Earth, but I find it hard to believe we will lose a fucking great aerial like that. Not without looking down the back of the sofa, at least.
