View Full Version : 558 m tower to resume construction!
Alvin February 11th, 2004, 05:59 AM An update from Jakarta ..
The Jakarta Tower ('Menara Jakarta') project will resume construction this year under the name 'Prasada Japa Pamudja'. This project has been put on hold since the 1997 crisis and is now under the Bethany Church management. The tower will host a 'Christian Center', as well as being a center for business, multi media, broadcasting. It will also host a mall, hotel, education office and and an observatory deck. When completed, it will be the TALLEST STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD. The height of the building is 558 m, some 5 metres taller than the CN Tower, the current record holder.
Btw, they have conspicuously removed the picture from the website of the old construction company..hehe .. too bad folks, no pics.>(
David-80 February 11th, 2004, 07:32 PM Great news ! where is it located again alvin? I will visit the construction site if possible ;)

Keep us updated please!!!!!!!!!!!
Alvin February 12th, 2004, 03:54 AM It's located in Kemayoran, just opposite to the Jakarta Fair Ground (PRJ) (on the way to Sunter). The vision is to transform the Kemayoran district to become Jakarta's Cybercity and 'International Business District' (Kawasan Bisnis Internasional).
A few mixed-development projects consisting of offices, apartments and buildings (called 'China Business Center') are due to be developed this year by PT Theda Persada Nusantara in partnership with a Chinese investor, as well as the new 'Mega Glodok Kemayoran' electronic shopping center.
There was a large 1 page ad yesterday about these exciting new developments on Kompas daily.
To summarise the completed and planned developments in Kemayoran:
Blok C6 : Jakarta Fair Ground
Blok C8: Jakarta Tower
Blok B2-B3, C7: 'China Business Center' - mixed use dev. consisting of office buildings and apartments
Blok B9: Menara Dapenbum
Blok A5: Pelazzo 'Venezia of Kemayoran': Shopping arcade, office and residential (expected completion 2005).
Blok B6: MegaGlodok Kemayoran
Blok A1: Mediterania Lagoon and Mediterania Palace Apartments (Agung Podomoro Group)
Blok D5: Blossom Residence
Blok D6: Gandhi International School, Universal School.
Btw, the developers just got approval to resume the Jakarta Tower construction last November, so I'm not sure if actual construction has already recommenced, but 'at the time of the stoppage, pile driving had been completed and slip forming of the concrete shaft of the Tower had begun. ' (I quote from http://technopress.kaist.ac.kr/journal/container/was/was4_4_container.jsp?order=1)
For more information about the Jakarta Tower project, you can contact PT Prasada Japa Pramudja on (62-21) 65700021/22.

The Menara Jakarta was intended as a 558m high reinforced concrete and steel tower (provisionally the world's tallest structure) incorporating offices, communication facilities and mast, tourist observation areas and a revolving restaurant. A 240,000sq m podium, incorporating retail facilities and parking surrounds the base. It’s intended location was in Northeast Jakarta, Indonesia. Design work was undertaken jointly by the East China Architectural Design Institute (ECADI) and a local Indonesian consortium (ICC).
Compare to other notable towers in the world:

teddybear February 14th, 2004, 12:07 AM I'll try to find out about this from Bethany. I heard Alex has envisioned this tall tower a year ago. Now I heard this plan suddenly on Bethany's hand.
I'm not surprised to see the tower to be constructed. But whose money will finance this huge tower? Throughout his life, Alex keeps on dreaming on projects and so far all of them are realized. The first Bethany church in Surabaya, and then the huge Bethany church which is also in Surabaya.
I will be amazed if this tower is constructed! 2 thumbs up for Alex' faith!
Alvin February 14th, 2004, 06:19 AM yeah i went to google and searched for 'menara jakarta', and there was a site which turned out to be a bethany newsletter- it confirmed that Alex had been given approval to build this tower last November (btw the site is now missing..) But the recent ad they put in Kompas daily didn't mention anything about the 'Christian center' idea...dunno whether it's cos of local sensitivities, or whether another investor has snatched it from bethany, or the plan was dropped.
I went pass Kemayoran today and so quite a few machines on the site (there were about 5 or 6 of 'em). Pretty unlikely these machines have remained there for 6 years or so idle...thus...v likely that the project is indeed underway..
teddybear February 14th, 2004, 06:51 AM Usually Alex does not have time frame for project completion. On each project he encounters obstacles and keep on insisting for the project until completed.
So, the project can be like stop and go, until it is completed.
Wow, I'd like to visit this tower when it is done! And sure it will become another legend for Alex!
Alright, folks, I have to edit this post since I found the pictures of Jakarta Revival Center. The name has been changed to Revival Center, which includes the tower itself. Here is the link, you can see Alex giving speech with the miniature of the tower. And not sure if the tower is still 588m?
http://www.bethanygraha.org/pubs/gallerymain.asp?id=8
Here is the Graha Bethany in Surabaya, which is completed in the year 2000. I think this man is amazing. This church is huge!

Alvin February 14th, 2004, 06:28 PM If it's true that the church is building this thing, I wonder how they acquired so much money ...:?
Aboveday February 14th, 2004, 07:46 PM why don`t they put a cross on the top?thunder on the cross would be cool.:D

President Approves of Jakarta Tower
JAKARTA - President Soeharto approves of the plan of conglomerate
Sudwikatomono and friends to build the Jakarta Tower, which will be
complete with communication facilities and tourism facilities with
hundreds of billion rupiahs investment.
This approval was expressed by the Head of State on Tuesday, in Bina
Graha Jakarta, when he summoned the well known businessman
Sudwikatmono who is entrusted with the construction of the tower.
Sudwikatmono came with a number of ministers and the Governor of
Jakarta, Surjadi Soedirdja. The ministers present were, Tourism, Post,
and Telecommunications Minister Joop Ave, Public Works Minister
Radinal Mochtar, Informations Minister Harmoko, and Investments
Minister Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo.
The plans for the Jakarta Tower, which will be constructed on the
former Kemayoran Airport, has already been reported to the Secretary
of State Moerdiono as the Head of the Kemayoran Organizing Body, last
year. The 500 meter Tower which will be built by the private sectors
will run an estimated cost of more than Rp 500 billion.
The three conglomerates who will finance the construction of the
tower, are Sudwikatmono, Prajogo Pangestu, and Hendry Pribadi. While
the contractor appointed are from Shanghai, China.
However, the plan to build the tower has caused several pro and contra
reactions, that the House of Representatives are still questioning
whether or not there are more important things to be built nationally,
instead of the tower which will cost a tremendous amount of money.
After about a year, there was no news of the construction of the
tower, yesterday, they met with President Soeharto, however, they
limited themselves to the topic of the construction of the tower.
In the meeting with President Soeharto yetsterday, Sudwikatmono chose
to remain quiet. The spokesperson who reported the result of the
meeting with President Soehart was Joop Ave.
"The trust to build the tower was given to the private sector, because
these days the national private sector has been entrusted with the
satelite projects. However, this project is a national project, which
means, that the planning to the construction must be done by
Indonesians," he said.
According to Ave, the involvement of foreigners is perhaps needed as
Indonesia is not yet capable, however, it is only limited to , for
example, consultants.
Sudwikatmono was not ready to explain the details of this project,
including the costs, and others as they are still being reviewed.
However, the location is the former Kemayoran Airport. THe most
important thing, according to Joop Ave, is that the Jakarta Tower is
hoped to be a national pride as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
"This tower will be a tourist attraction, and the private sectors
appointed are aware of this. In Jakarta, there is the completion of
the highest building that is the BNI 46 Jakarta building, which is 46
storeys tall," he said.
However, said Joop Ave, height is not the primary issue, it is the
function of the tower itself which will be the most complete
telecommunication facility and tourist object besides TMII and Ancol.
"The Head of State has stressed that the materials used should be
produced in Indonesia, make use of all the nation's experts so it will
become the pride of our next generation," he said.
The presence of the ministers and the Governor according to Joop Ave,
is because this project involves the duties fo the officials. It is
hoped that Sudwikatmono, who is appointed to build this project, can
soon announce the details of the project.
Alvin February 28th, 2004, 02:59 PM IT Peaks In Valleys
By Mersagita Prabudi, 1-Jan-2001
The success story of Silicon Valley in boosting the
American economy has triggered other countries to
emulate the idea. In Asia, this is evident in
Singapore, Hong Kong, and in Malaysia's Multimedia
Super Corridor.
Indonesia, in turn, will have its own two "Silicon
Valleys"-CyberCity, a joint venture with the Japanese,
and Bandung High Tech Valley (BHTV), to be built by a
team of well-respected Indonesian IT experts.
CyberCity will be at the old Kemayoran Airport in
Jakarta, about 6 km from the country's Presidential
Palace. The project is expected to be completed by
2003. CyberCity appears to be the largest and is
intended to be the country's centre for e-commerce,
software R&D, telecommunications and multimedia.
The project is to be managed by PT Jakarta
International Trade Fair Corporation (JITC), a S$14
million (US$8.08 million) joint venture between
Indonesia and Japan.
The players include Indonesia's PT Griya Nusantara
Pratama (GNP), the State Secretariat, the city
government of Jakarta, as well as the Japanese
government (through the Overseas Economic Cooperation
Fund) and 57 private sector players from Japan (they
include Sumitomo, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and the
Industrial Bank of Japan).
According to Edward Soeryadjaya, CEO of GNP and
chairman of Executive Committee of L&M Group
Investments, the project will take up 44 ha of the 450
ha area and will comprise six zones-CyberCity nucleus,
light industry, education and training, hotel and
residential use, recreation, and entertainment. L&M
Group Investments acts as a catalyst for some
multimedia projects in CyberCity.
Soeryadjaya says the idea of building CyberCity is to
put as many IT and business players in one place as
possible. "With the right concept and a different
approach, we hope this will be a good niche to attract
new capital," he adds.
In June 2000, L&M signed a strategic alliance
agreement with Lucent Technologies. In this agreement,
Lucent's Network Care Professional Service (NPS) will
design, implement and operate the network, as well as
provide network monitoring, support and marketing
initiatives for CyberCity. L&M also named Lucent as
its primary supplier of communications network
infrastructure for its current and coming projects,
including the CyberCity initiatives.
Interestingly, Indonesia's highly regarded IT experts,
such as Onno Purbo, Budi Rahardjo, and Roy Suryo, are
not involved in CyberCity. Instead, Budi is leading a
team to build BHTV, a corridor along the industrial
areas in West Java and Jakarta. BHTV is expected to be
ready by 2010.
The idea for the project came about a few years ago
when Indonesia's Ministry of Trade and Industry
collaborated on a study with a consulting firm on
boosting income from non-oil and non-gas exports.
Results from the study suggested that by 2010,
Indonesia must gain US$20 billion from the electronics
manufacturing sector. In 1999, the country produced
US$3 billion, while the Philippines, for example,
already boasts US$26 billion from the sector.
Budi, who is considered the pioneer in building
Web-based applications in the country, says the reason
for choosing Bandung, the capital of West Java, as the
place to build BHTV is that highly recognised
universities, especially the Bandung Institute of
Technology (ITB), are located there. The city is also
the hometown for some IT-related enterprises,
including PT Telekomunikasi and Indonesian Science
Institute (LIPI).
Budi, who is also the head of The Center of
Microelectronics Research from ITB, is unperturbed by
comments from the industry that BHTV should be in Bali
or Batam instead.
"We should not dispute about where the project will be
based? Even Solo (the capital of Central Java) High
Tech Valley seems good to me. But why do we choose
Bandung? Because there is already a community (of
high-tech universities and IT-related enterprises)
there," he says.
Despite the separate projects, Suryo, Indonesia's
e-provocateur, doubts the two groups of players will
head in different directions. "In fact, they will
converge as each project becomes mature and then form
an integrated e-Indonesia," he says.
In Suryo's view, the private sector, or in this case
Edward's L&M Group Investment and its partners, should
take the lead in the integration. With their existing
funding resources, land properties, and technical
readiness, they have a responsibility to do so. The
team headed by Budi might play the role as builders of
the upcoming integrated e-Indonesia, he adds. There
certainly are opportunities for synergies.
CyberCity will provide an intelligent environment in
which IT players can manage their businesses; Bandung
can act as the anchor to generate IT human resource
for BHTV which will largely depend on the government
to regulate foreign investments to fill up the
corridor.
If both projects are to combine forces, an integrated
e-Indonesia will pose a challenge to its Asian
counterparts.

hey guys check raywhite site, all the list that Alvin mentioned is on the list.
ryanr March 23rd, 2004, 01:52 PM Wow, is this actually underconstruction right now? I cant believe that i live in jakarta and i know nothing of this...
Pretty cool...its so tall. Ironic that the church is part of the project, seeing that Indonesia is the world's largest Islamic country.
btw, did u guys know that the two main avenues in Kemayoran used to be runways and taxiways for the old airport? They are so long and wide, you can really picture planes going down them.
Alvin March 23rd, 2004, 10:22 PM heheh of course. that is why it's often dubbed 'Kota Bandar Baru Kemayoran' (New Port Kemayoran City), and some of the roads are called 'jalan landasan pacu' ('Runway Road') etc. ;)

huaiwei April 11th, 2004, 07:49 AM I first thing I tot of when I saw the design was the one in Shanghai...the triple tower structure sparked the comparison! :D
Anyway....its great this one is coming up right here in Southeast Asia.....I look forward to the day the "Torontonians" have to say a little less about their tower! D
Alvin April 11th, 2004, 01:04 PM Hey everyone,
bought a copy of the current edition of 'Bisnis Properti' magazine, there's a special report on the Kemayoran Development. Some points:
- 12 investors will develop this area
- the concept is 'garden city', with only 24% of the 454 Ha land allowed for development - the rest will be open green areas =)
- will be positioned as a high tech 'City within a City', will develop into Jakarta's new CBD in the next 10-20 years.
- International standards of city planning will be implemented in this area, including wide pedestrian sidewalks, places for street vendors, and access for the handicapped. It will support the development of Jakarta as an international 'service city' with service and trade facilities, information facilities, business centers, offices, and high rise residentials.
- there's a small picture of the vision.and yes, as Mahaputra have said, I can see about 80 towers rising up in the future. According to the Director of the Kemayoran Development Agency, all the construction will be completed within 15 years.
And even more interesting news about the Jakarta Tower:
- Confirmed 558 metres.
- multimedia and broadcasting faciltiies.
- large shopping Mall at the base.
- it will be a new tourist attraction - the Project Director expects 2 million visitors to Jakarta/year once completed.
- There will be a hotel.
- A Museum of Indonesian History, which will be presented using cutting edge technology.
- Total investment exceeds Rp2 trillion (approx. US$250 million) - not including the Hotel.
- According to the Kemayoran Development head, it will be completed 'within 6 years'.
Can't wait! :)
Mahaputra April 12th, 2004, 05:59 AM good stuff alvin...
btw, where did u get a copy of bisnis properti from? are u in Jakarta right now?
Alvin April 13th, 2004, 03:13 PM yeahh in Jakarta at the moment. going back to aust. tomorrow though.....
:runaway:
SeeMacau April 13th, 2004, 04:35 PM so u got any pics ?? Alvin
Alvin April 14th, 2004, 05:08 AM sorry, no pics =) haven't got the time to visit it and take pics. anyway, there's nothing much in the construction zone at the moment - only cranes and construction machines.
there's an article about it in today's newspaper, they've finished removing all water from the big pond (yes, it was dug in 1997, and 6 years of neglect has turned the construction zone into a lake - used by local residents for fishing/swimming), and a Minister will pay a visit and officially mark the re-commencement of construction tomorrow. it will be completed in 2010.
there will be 2 17 storey office buildings on both sides of the tower. The highest 'occupiable' floor will be at a height of about 390 metres. That point might be a 'sky garden', or a revolving restaurant, or the observatory deck, i'm not quite sure. anyway there's a big article about that in a current magazine...but i think i'lve told u guys everythign already :drunk:

PT Persada Japa Pamudja (PJP), pengembang Menara Jakarta (konsorsium sejumlah pengusaha besar), memperkirakan menara itu menampung jumlah wisatawan sebanyak 4-6 juta orang per tahun.
(Kompas, 12/9/1995)
Pembangunan menara Jakarta mulai dibangun tahun 1997.
Raja properti, Trihatma Kusuma Haliman, kini tengah membangun dua gedung kembar di kawasan segitiga emas, yakni The Peak.
(OSA/AS)

Alvin April 15th, 2004, 01:25 PM RI to have world's tallest tower
JAKARTA (AFP): Governor of Jakarta Sutiyoso here on Tuesday oversaw the initiation of construction work on the Jakarta Tower in the district of Kemayoran on the site of the city's former airport, which what is billed as the tallest tower in the world.
The tower will stand 558 meters (1,860 feet) tall, surpassing the Canadian National Tower in Toronto which is 553 meters.
"The tower is is going to be the landmark of Jakarta and will be like other famous structures in big countries. This will enhance the image of Jakarta as a metropolitan city," Sutiyoso said.
Work is expected to end in 2009. Construction was due to start in the late 1990s but the 1997/1998 regional financial crisis forced a postponement.
The project is being financed by local tycoons. The cost was originally projected at US$400 million.

Jakarta to get world's tallest tower
Damar Harsanto, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
The fact that Indonesian people have a per capita income of only US$710 per annum according to the World Bank does not appear to embarrass the Jakarta Administration as it pushes ahead with its plan to restart the construction of the 558-meter Jakarta Tower, claimed to be the tallest tower in the world.
The Rp 2.7 trillion (US$314 million) project will stand tall in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, and will replace the capital's current landmark, the National Monument (Monas), which was built during the president Sukarno era.
The Jakarta Tower will be higher than the 553-meter Canadian National Tower in Toronto, Canada, currently the world's tallest tower.
Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, accompanied by State Secretary Bambang Kesowo, officiated at the restart of construction on Thursday.
"This large-scale project when completed will become a symbol of pride for Jakarta as well as Indonesia," Sutiyoso said.
He said the construction of the tower was in line with the grand design in the capital's masterplan, which positioned the Kemayoran area as a main center for development.
PT Prasada Japa Pamudja, a consortium of individuals and medium-scale companies, is the sole developer of the project.
However, company director, Ferry Sangeroki, refused to name those involved in the project, saying only that "more than 100 companies and individuals" were participating.
He said the project would be financed in three ways: equity participation (Rp 400 billion), syndicated loans (between Rp 600 billion and Rp 800 billion) and pre-project sales (around Rp 1.3 trillion).
The Jakarta Tower compound will cover a total of 40,550 square meters, comprising a 10,000-capacity convention center, a four-star, 200-bedroom hotel, a 4,000-square-meter education center, 8,000 square meters of office space, a revolving restaurant and an observation deck.
The tower is expected to be open by 2010.
The ground breaking ceremony for the Jakarta Tower took place in 1997 during the time of governor Surjadi Soedirdja and state secretary Moerdiono. The project's developer at that time was PT Indocitra Grahabawana, which was owned by Sudwikatmono, former president Soeharto's stepbrother.
The project had to be suspended due to the 1997 economic crisis, which dealt a severe blow to all sectors, including construction.

Jakarta begins building tallest tower
JAKARTA - Construction of what is billed as the world's tallest tower began in the Indonesian capital yesterday. Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso oversaw the start of work on the Jakarta Tower in the Kemayoran district on the site of the city's former airport. The tower will stand 558m tall, surpassing the Canadian National Tower in Toronto which is 553m high, Detikcom news portal quoted a press release as saying.
'The tower is going to be the landmark of Jakarta and will be like other famous structures in big countries. This will enhance the image of Jakarta as a metropolitan city,' Mr Sutiyoso said. Work on the tower is expected to end in 2009.
Construction was due to start in the late 1990s but the 1997-1998 regional financial crisis forced a postponement. The project is being financed by local tycoons. The cost was originally projected at US$400 million (S$676 million).

Mahaputra April 16th, 2004, 08:45 AM bad news guys..
tokyo is going to build a 600m broadcast tower..
dunno whether it's gonna be confirmed or not.. but still... a threat for Jakartatower as the tallest tower in the world.. damnn.. ehhehe
ryanr April 16th, 2004, 12:13 PM Damn, you guys beat me to it. I was gonna post those articles!!:D
:applause:
One thing concerns be though. They are building something at this magnitude/cost when many of Jakarta's residents live on less than $1 a day...:(
Alvin April 16th, 2004, 12:50 PM well I guess the justification for that is it's not the job of entrepreneurs and investors and highscraper freaks to look after the poor =) it's the government's job... these ppl are interested in making as much $$ as they can =) the good side about it is that construction will require heaps of labor thus employing heaps of ppl - giving people jobs :)
if towers like this are made every month, then there will definitely be more jobs around =)
David-80 April 16th, 2004, 01:04 PM I agree with Alvin, this will open more employment chance for the jakartans, especially when this thing opened....this gonna be reciprocity mutual.

Alvin April 17th, 2004, 02:58 AM Jakarta restarts work on 'world's tallest tower', despite subsidence concerns
By Kathy Marks in Sydney
17 April 2004
An Indonesian consortium has recommenced work on what it says will be the world's tallest tower, despite concerns that the site is sinking into the sea.
The Jakarta Tower, which is being built on an old airfield in the centre of the national capital, will eventually soar to 1,830ft,The Jakarta Post reported yesterday. At present the world's highest free-standing such structure is the CN Tower, a 1,800ft-high communications building and outlook point in Toronto, Canada. The Sears Tower in Chicago is 1,453ft tall, while the Petronas Towers in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, reach 1,483ft.
Land in the city's northern sections, along the Java Sea shoreline, has been gradually sinking as a result of thousands of illegal wells pumping out water from the ground. The Jakarta Tower is to be situated in that district.
The governor of Jakarta, who has the single name Sutiyoso, said: "This large-scale project will become a symbol of pride for Jakarta as well as Indonesia."
Mr Sutiyoso has been accused of concentrating on showpiece projects such as the tower while ignoring the capital city's crumbling infrastructure and the squalid housing that is home to millions of impoverished city-dwellers.
Work on the tower began in 1997, but was halted later that year when the Asian financial crisis hit the region. Dozens of other large-scale building projects were also abandoned.
Construction has restarted because of an upturn in the economy, which is now growing at 4 per cent a year, fuelling a mini-building boom in the city. Several new shopping centres, apartment blocks and office buildings are springing up or have recently opened.
The tower is expected to cost 2,700bn rupiahs (£174m) and to be completed in 2010. It will hold a 10,000-seat convention centre and a 200-bed hotel.
The newspaper reported that the Jakarta Tower will include a hotel, shops and office space. The city's tallest building is currently the 56-storey BNI Tower, which stands at 820ft.

Alvin April 23rd, 2004, 02:13 PM Kota Baru Bandar Kemayoran
Mimpi Menjadi Kota Perdagangan Internasional
”Image”
Ketua Dewan Pengurus Daerah Real Estat Indonesia (DPD REI) DKI Jakarta, Alwi Bagir Mulachela punya pandangan tersendiri tentang lambannya pengembangan kawasan Kemayoran.
(SH/rudy victor sinaga)
Pranoto Sunarto
Kemayoran Akan Menjadi ”Landmark” Jakarta
JAKARTA—Kota Baru Bandar Kemayoran (KBBK) barangkali hanya bernasib kurang mujur.
Alvin April 24th, 2004, 03:58 PM hey guys, it turns out that the current Jakarta Tower design was actually number 2 in the competition. It's by ECADI Shanghai, the same team that designed Pearl Orient Tower in Shanghai. THe winning design by Murphi/Iohn from the US was considered way too expensive..
http://www.gatra.com/images/gambar/107/37.jpg
Mimpi Spektakuler Pancasila
Salah satunya, sebagai "World's Tallest Free Standing Structure" di Guinness Book of World Records.
Maka, diadakanlah kompetisi internasional.
Kita nggak sanggup," kata Danisworo.
"Jumlahnya sangat banyak," katanya.

Alvin May 2nd, 2004, 04:59 PM INDONESIA: Fierce criticism over bid for world's largest tower
23/04/2004 19:57:11 | Asia Pacific Programs
Indonesia has joined the race to build the world's tallest tower. Work has begun on the Jakarta Tower in Kemayoran, the site of the city's airport. The project is due to be completed by 2009, at a cost of more than 300 million US dollars. But while the Jakarta authorities say it will enhance the city's image, the project faces widespread opposition.
Transcript:
MACGREGOR: When it comes to cities and their status symbols, size certainly does matter. For years, Kuala Lumpur's famous Petronas Towers were the envy of the region. Now Jarkarta is getting its own back, with a multi-million dollar, 558-metre tower on the site of the city's former airport. The Jakarta Tower will take about five years to build. Once it's complete, the giant structure, housing a convention centre, a four star hotel, eight thousand square metres of office space, and the obligatory revolving restaurant, will enhance the city's image. That's according to Jakarta's provincial governor Sutiyoso, who recently presided over the start of construction. But not everyone is impressed. Architect and lecturer at the University of Technology Bandung, Yuswadi Saliya:
SALIYA: Architecturally speaking I think it's meaningless because the design is so bad. I saw in the papers the photographs of the models of the tower. It's very old-fashioned I think, compared to the tall buildings nowadays being built in Malaysia or China. I think it's a mere economic gimic. I think it's being built just to attract the investors, to give their capital here in Jakarta so that perhaps they will believe that Indonesia is capable of building a tall building...here in Indonesia.
MACGREGOR: The government has been trying to get the project off the ground for over a decade. It was originally to have been developed by a firm headed by a cousin of former president Suharto, at a projected cost of four hundred million US dollars. After the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the tower acquired a new developer, PT Prasada Japa Pamudja, and a more conservative budget of 314 million. But critics of the project say this saving is hardly significant when sixty percent of Indonesia's population live on about two dollars a day. They're outraged that governor Sutiyoso is continuing to evict tens of thousands of city dwellers to make way for showpiece developments. Wardah Hafidz, director of the Urban Poor Coalition, says at least five thousand homes have been demolished in the Kemayoran area since the Jakarta Tower project was first planned.
HAFIDZ: It started since Suharto time, some ten fifteen or twenty years ago, so evictions have been happening since then. It's an insult to the urban poor, because their economic situation is still very bad now. And the local government continues to evict informal economic activities and also the poor settlements and yet on the other hand, they are planning for this tallest tower in the world or whatever.
MACGREGOR: Wardah Hafidz says the evictions have resulted in unemployment as well as homelessness. And she'll continue to try to force the authorities to rethink their approach.
HAFIDZ: I think they should stop the evictions. And what they have to do is to make an inventory of lands say for instance in Jakarta...vacant lands, the occupied lands and so on. I think the policy should be that the city is replanned to accommodate those business activities traditional activities and economic activites and communities, so each can support each other for a city for all.
David-80 May 3rd, 2004, 06:25 AM I think macgregor has made some mistake there.
1. theres no eviction in kemayoran, because the area was 100% used for International/aviation airport
2. if there was eviction in a small scale, it must be settled long time ago (10 years) because like the developer said....they are resuming the project.
3. Indonesia population below poverty level which is living under 2 dollars or less are 27% (check the figure on CIA website) and according to bps.go.id its now 18% (2003). so what in a sense 60%??
cheers
Alvin May 3rd, 2004, 07:02 AM yeah I think social welfare issues should be totally separated from private business...like seriously, name me one entreprenuer who would rather spend $300 million to provide housing for the poor rather than to build a commercially viable project, such as the world's tallest tower! In today's capitalist world, such idealism is fantasy...it just won't happen...it's the government's job to address these issues, not the business community. People often overlook the benefits in terms of employment opportunities projects like this can generate...

Alvin May 3rd, 2004, 09:00 AM Penawaran Sewa Area Shopping Menara Jakarta Dibuka Agustus 2004
Laporan -

Alvin May 25th, 2004, 01:06 PM David-80, any news on when that website will be up?
David-80 May 26th, 2004, 10:02 AM Alvin, i havent heard any news yet...maybe because they are working on the website with flash and animation or maybe they still need to find remote server which is easy to access from outside and inside Indonesia.
cheers

yeah.. definitely it wont be the tallest tower for long.. there will be many buildings and towers taller than 558m by that time..
so yeah.. good on russia..
we're just proud that our country has one of the world's tallest structure..
David-80 June 1st, 2004, 05:10 AM You guys forgot, so present second tallest 540m Ostankino Tele Tower planed to increasing to 568 meters in 2007.
we aint forgot...we just didnt know of those news...anyway every tallest tower would lose their title anyway..so its alright. Jakarta tower can also increase their height anytime soon, looking at the fact that its still underconstruction and want to regain the status of the tallest tv tower.
cheers
SeeMacau June 1st, 2004, 12:32 PM I don't think it's important to consider about how long the tower to stay for the world tallest structure ... at least Indonesia has the ability to build the world tallest structure !! right !! :D
macgyver June 1st, 2004, 03:07 PM Lets advise them to increase the spire by 20 meters.
So Jakarta Tower will be 578m :) :carrot: :grouphug:
Avatar June 4th, 2004, 02:25 PM I will say it again... regardless of how tall this project is and how mighty and exciting the development; It may well be a source of embarrassment for Indonesia.
So original... it looks like the designer has just cut and pasted sections of the OPT and the Ostankino television tower to make their own design... hmmm what a joke.
It is the most vile and ill conceived tall tower anywhere on this Earth. Disproportionate, unbalanced, a failure in fusion of form and style... the aesthetics are a massive failure on every level of design and architecture. If they seek to build such a massive icconic tower why would they not run a competition or rather look at some additional designs... from memory there was another design far more unique and far more appealing... what ever happened to it?

ehmmm... it's not an embarassment thank you very much.. for a country like Indonesia, we're quite proud to have this tower.. it may not be the tallest one.. but it'll sure create massive job opportunities and boost the economic of our country..
and as for the design.. it actually has meanings implanted on the tower..
the 5 rings in the middle actually represents the Pancasila, which is the constitutions of this country..
for ur information, they did run a competition for the tower design..
and the winner had an absolute stunning design, but the cost to build this tower is massive.. so therefore they went for the second best.. which was designed by an architect firm from shanghai (if I'm not mistaken)..
and this has a positive effect to Indonesia's and China's relationship. China nowadays has invested quite a lot of money in Indonesia and have worked with the Indonesian government in constructing various projects, such as the Suramadu bridge, JORR (Jakarta Outer Ring Road), and others..
architecture nowadays dont just rely on aesthetics, but also function, purpose and the meanings behind the design..
Mahaputra June 4th, 2004, 03:29 PM oh yeah another thing.. talking about "the most vile and ill conceived tall tower anywhere on this Earth"..
I wouldnt judge people's design.. as I respect their work and the effort they have put into in designing these amazing structures...
but if u want to put it that way, why dont u take a look closer to ur city first before making any judgement.. ie (sydney tower)...
JktCity June 4th, 2004, 09:02 PM let him talk guys....he has the right to express his opinion, it's a 'free' forum....N beside ....who gives a **** bout his opinion anyway??? i certainly dont!!

For the record, the Jakarta Tower was designed by the same fellows in ECADI (East China Architectural and Design Institute) who designed the OPT in Shanghai, which explains their similarities in design. It was designed back in 1995, which explains why it looks 'so innovative'.
Second, that 'far more unique and far more appealing' design actually won the design competition (This design came 2nd), but was dropped because , after they did some calculations on how much it would cost, it was considered unfeasible financially.

I might not like SydneyTower but it is far more elegant and stylish than your offering. The only reason I am slaging off this design is beacuse it is poor!
I appluade Indonesia for building such a large project and so tall but honestly look at it... it is vulgar, and it does not hold a candle to OPT.

maybe it'll look better when it's finished.. or maybe worse.. we never know..

They DID DID run a competition .... It was the 2nd on the competition, the design was from ECADI
Avatar June 6th, 2004, 05:04 AM Im sorry guys there was no offence intended in my ripping into your tower design. I also now know there was a competition which initially i was unaware of... I'd rather them spend the extra dollars and go with the original first choice. It was innovative, exciting and a really interesting design.

I dont think they have "forgotten" it....they just arent aware of it yet. This project really needs alot of publicity. Why dont you guys make a bolder announcement in the international section? I am sure this warrants more attention then that cn thing in toronto! :D
David-80 June 30th, 2004, 07:36 AM We already have a thread there, thanks to Rafflescity, but seems most of them have very negative opinion regarding the design itself, some said..its like copycat, etc. Oh well, maybe we just wait until its finished :D

"Marketing" is one thing that we Indonesian must learn a lot  . We shouldnot think because we're building world's highest tower then everyone will look at us. Not that simple. We must market it. Show it and continously inform people. Update with news.
Internet based marketing can be cost efficient promotion. This can be followed by, say, putting a big welcome in CGK airport like: "Welcome to Jakarta, the city of world's tallest tower'...
How about that?

like tourism.. we've got so many places to go... and so many nice beaches.. forests...
but no-one knows about it.. and as well.. lack of infrastructure.. like roads and highways..
JAG2 June 30th, 2004, 08:47 PM I agree, but on the other hand , the Indonesian people should cherrish their country , what I mean is : preserve the jungle ( for eco-tourism ) their beaches and underwater world ( don t use dynamite for fishing ) and many more. I love Indonesia but the Indonesian people ( no offense ) ' like ' to litter.
And make a good promotion film , like Malaysia did and still does.

Any form of publicity is usually better then none! :)
Not everyone is going to sit up and love the design from day one...it often takes alot of getting used to. Just look at how many people are still groaning over how T101 looks like. So what they will usually need is lots of visual reminders of this tower, till the point whereby they wont fail to mention it in any discussion about significant buildings coming up.
Whatever the case, I am just proud that Southeast Asia will grap another "world tallest" title again, once by KL, and now by Jakarta. Way to go, everyone! ;)

this is exactly what I'm saying, promote promote and promote. I've no idea how much Jakarta Provincial Government involves in this tower, anyway whoever in that project, IMHO, should, say work together with JKT Tourism Board to promote both the city and the tower. Give and take. :blahblah:
Or if that idea is so high in the sky that our hand so short to reach... why dont we, forumers, start do something. Host a website for instance.
Anyone?

Menara Jakarta Berubah Desain
Tambah Kamar Hotel, Bang Yos Minta Dikaji
David-80 September 28th, 2004, 01:48 PM Tinggi menara tetap 560 meter," jelasnya.

Alvin November 4th, 2004, 04:30 PM hey, I think it is still 558m. I think that guy who said 560 was simply rounding it up when he said it..

SeeMacau November 12th, 2004, 09:01 AM I read the Chinese newspaper today and saw the article about Guangzhou TV tower, the construction will begins at the end of this year and will be complete in 2007/2008. The height of the tower is estimate to be around 580-600 meters !!
Alvin November 12th, 2004, 09:08 AM shit, so fast! the Jakarta Tower won't be completed until 2010
SeeMacau November 12th, 2004, 09:16 AM Here is the article in Chinese, it also says the tower will becomes the tallest structure when complete.

Guangzhou to build tallest tower in the world
Beijing - THE southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has announced plans to build the world's tallest tower.
Work is expected to begin soon on the Guangzhou TV tower, which will measure 580m to 600m above the ground.
It will surpass the current record holder - the 553m CN Tower in Toronto.
It will also be taller than New York's new World Trade Center, which will measure 541m at its spire, according to the BBC.
To be sited along the Pearl River, it will occupy 84,880 sq m in the city's premier business district of Tianhe.
Thirteen local and foreign companies were bidding for the right to design the landmark structure. Three have been shortlisted.
Mr Huang Jiatian, deputy director at the Headquarters for the Construction of the Guangzhou New TV Tower, said the companies were Arup Qualification of Britain, Architecture Studio of France and Leon Wohl Hage Wernik of Germany.
'We expect the project to be open to tourists by 2008,' he told Agence France-Presse.
'The TV tower will be a symbol of Guangzhou, a tourist attraction combining cultural and entertainment facilities.'
The reason for the height was related primarily to the television transmitter, Mr Huang added.
An official surnamed Luo from the Construction Committee of Guangzhou said around 200 families will have to move to make way for the project.
'Relocation work has already begun and construction work will start at the beginning of December,' he told AFP.
According to the China Daily, the project will cost more than 1.5 billion yuan (S$300 million).
Guangzhou's old TV tower will be demolished and the Guangdong provincial TV stations will move into the new building.
Television towers have often become architectural symbols and tourist attractions in many cities around the world, including one in China's financial hub, Shanghai.
Fir3blaze November 16th, 2004, 04:52 PM OMG....they're really fast. I hope those ppl doing the Jakarta Tower better work harder from today, or at least redesign the tower to be 601m instead of jsut 558m (can they?)....Oh man...imagine building "the world's tallest tower" but got surpassed by others even before completion.... :bash:
David-80 November 16th, 2004, 11:04 PM I have the feeling they will OR they can just cheat the whole thing with spire. But of course, its not what we really want....neverthless upon completion, we still have something to proud or a trademark for Jakarta.
Cheers
Mahaputra November 16th, 2004, 11:35 PM yeah.. it doesnt matter if jakarta tower wont be the tallest in the world, but it'll still be a landmark for Jakarta...
Alvin November 17th, 2004, 02:34 AM i think its possible that, mid-way or towards the end, they'll decide to extend the spire, seeing that jkt tower will be completed only AFTER guangzhou tower is completed, so they have a time advantage. :)
Fir3blaze November 17th, 2004, 04:38 AM Heee...that would be cool :) Well, it'd be nice to see it when its complete
David-80 November 21st, 2004, 10:43 PM China shelves tallest tower plans
China is undergoing an architectural revolution
The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has cancelled plans to build the world's tallest tower.
The local authorities rejected a plan for the tower which would have reached the height of 580-600m (1,914-1,980 feet), state media reports.
Instead, Guangzhou will construct a building 400m high - which will fall 20m short of Shanghai's Jinmao tower - currently China's highest building.
The tallest building in the world at present is the CN Tower in Toronto.
"The design requires the building to reach a height of 400m, 200m lower", the director of Guangdong province's urban planning department, Pan An, was quoted by the China Daily newspaper as saying.
Ye Ronggui, professor of architecture at the South China University told the publication the new design would fit in more with the surrounding architecture.
The new tower would also be cheaper to build and would better be able to resist typhoons and storms, he said.
David-80 November 21st, 2004, 10:44 PM Let me buy beers for all of you
cheers
Alvin November 22nd, 2004, 01:37 AM yeah, well IMO it was pointless anyway to build the world's tallest building when Burj Dubai is alrealdy U/C. Anyhow, a superstall structure could turn into an eyesore if its not supported by sufficient skyline density and a really good design. :)
Fir3blaze November 22nd, 2004, 07:25 AM Let me buy beers for all of you
Bring on the beer, man!!
Anyway, i haven heard of the Burj Dubai. Alvin, can gimme an overview?

Alvin February 28th, 2005, 12:45 PM "Menara Jakarta = Monumen Keberhasilan Orde Baru"
Amazing how times have changed... :)
Jakarta, 27 September 1995
JAKARTA (PIPA) -- Akhirnya Mensesneg Moerdiono bersuara tentang
Bina Graha. "Jadwalnya sedang diatur oleh Pak Moerdiono," ujar
Sudwikatmono seusai mengikuti peresmian Pab rik Olefin Chandra Asri oleh
Presiden Suharto pekan lalu.
Seandainya jadi, itu memang bukan pertama kalinya proyek swasta
dipresentasikan pada, bahkan diresmikan oleh, Presiden. Contohnya, antara
lain, peresmian Chandra Asri dan presentasi proyek stasiun terpadu
Manggarai.
Siti Hardijanti Rukmana, putri Presiden.
dimaksudkan agar mereka faham. Sebab, menurut Pak Dwi ini, banyak anggota
DPR yang memprotes karena tidak mengerti. Mereka yang sejak awal mengecam
proyek itu, misalnya, Theo Syafei ( F-ABRI), Andi Matalatta (FKP). Royani
"keberhasilan Orde Baru". Proyek ini diperkirakan menelan sekitar 400 juta
dolar AS (hampir satu triliun rupiah). Nama "Menara Trilogi", menurut
taipan itu, didapat atas petunjuk Presiden. Sebelumnya, Sudwikatmono
pernah mengusulkan nama "Menara Jakarta".
menjadi lambang kota Jakarta, Monas cuma seperempat tinggi Menara Trilogi.
Kesenjangan". Koran The Jakarta Post menyebutnya sebagai "tower of
indifference" (menara ketidakpedulian). Beberapa anggota DPR menyebutnya
Namun, Sudwikatmono membantah jika menaranya disebut proyek
mercusuar.
Trilogi murni bikinan swasta. Sampai saat ini, Sudwikatmono belum merinci
pendanaan proyek tersebut. Ia mengajak dua taipan lain karena tak punya
cukup dana.
Moerdiono, ketika ditanya anggota FKP Tjahjo Kumolo mengenai
mengatakan "bukan urusan saya". Misalnya, mengenai nama dan soal
keuntungan. "Apakah akan untung? Mestinya iya.
mempertimbangkan keuntungan bisnis.***
Fir3blaze February 28th, 2005, 05:25 PM Why are they calling it Menara Trilogi? I don't see anything related to "3" or "Trilogy" with it.
Btw, Interesting theme. "Monumen Keberhasilan Orde Baru".
Alvin March 1st, 2005, 12:43 AM I think its referring to the New Order slogan "Trilogi Pembangunan", which I quote here from http://www.ekonomirakyat.org/edisi_11/artikel_1.htm:
Trilogi Pembangunan
(Radius Prawiro. 1998:409)
Fir3blaze March 1st, 2005, 05:23 AM Thanks for the definition, Alvin! I didn't of that before.
JAG2 March 23rd, 2005, 11:06 AM Are there any news or pictures abt this project ???
Alvin March 23rd, 2005, 12:22 PM very hard to find info about this project online.
I don't think we'll see any physical progress until at least another year, They're concentrating on building the 'base' at the moment, due in 2007, and then the tower scheduled for 2010. it's a loooooooong process
ryanr March 23rd, 2005, 12:24 PM why does it take a lot of time to build the base?
Alvin March 23rd, 2005, 12:28 PM I'm not sure to be honest, basically , from what I gather, they're given a 3 year limit to build the base, and then another 3 years to build the tower (from 2004).
The base itself will be quite big...note that the design of the base has been altered -bulked up - from the original model...

and btw, how do you do it?
sanhen May 3rd, 2005, 04:57 AM So we will have:
1. Jakarta Waterfront City with MRT
2. Mega Kuningan with Monorail
3. Kemayoran Cyber City with MRT
4. Kota Toea
5. What else?
We really need that website project up to keep track on everything.
Yamauchi May 3rd, 2005, 04:58 AM You just have it on your screen, then you press the "Print Screen" button (by F12). This is the same as copying text, except it copies the view of your screen. Then you go into any image processing software and click Edit>Paste>New Image (or something along those lines). Then you can mess with it some. Here is page 4, it looks not-so-good. Sorry, I'm not sure how to crop that purple/light purple border.

It's the button "PrtSc" = Print Screen ....
Use control-prtSc or Shift-PrtSc ( for copying the whole window/screen or the active window/screen )
Sometime in F12 sometime next to it .....
Yamauchi May 3rd, 2005, 05:41 AM I don't know of any shortcut. Actually it is the key directly to the right of the F12 key, it should say "Print Scrn" on it or "SysRq." Anyway, I know it is a pretty big hassle.
sanhen May 3rd, 2005, 06:46 AM I think you can extract Image from PDF, provided it is not copy protected.
If you using Acrobat Reader 6.0, under Advanced menu, click on Export All Images.
Or, choose under Tools-> Basic -> Selection -> Select Image. Then click on the image you want to save, then right click.
Or, "save as" the PDF as an JPG, and crop it using your image editing program.
And, as the rule of thumb way... as Yamauchi suggest, use the Print Scrn button. Every keyboard have one. But its not a frequent use button, so if you are using laptop, it might be well hidden and you need to press your laptop function key first.

the area of the jakarta tower took the whole of the area of the old airport (kemayoran airport)
which is really big!
Alvin June 25th, 2005, 06:55 AM Hmm, no wonder its only due to be completed in 2009 (the base -- 2007)
so slow...but at least something is going on? Obviously they need to dig a very deep hole...were you able to see what was inside the enclosure?
thanks for the pics btw :)

sadly no!
ncon June 25th, 2005, 07:49 AM alvin u can check the ritz i updated the pics!
David-80 June 25th, 2005, 12:51 PM Hmm this is quite long to build the base. Considering Jakarta tower will occupy the whole base of Kemayoran airport. The concrete base should be very strong, because it was used for airport before. Or maybe they wanted to make sure if the concrete base wont sink...
Anyway thanks encon :)
cheers

no problem :D
Alvin June 25th, 2005, 01:07 PM Yes, I think David is right, it takes a while to excavate and build the base considering the tower will rise 558 m above the ground! But I hope to see something rising up within a year...
ncon June 28th, 2005, 11:01 AM the area from far:

XxRyoChanxX July 5th, 2005, 10:46 PM that's really tall..~ when this tower is done..will it be in highest tower in SEA??
Fir3blaze July 6th, 2005, 02:10 PM The tower was planned to be the tallest in teh world, beating CN tower in Canada. But, if you read a few posts down, seems like Jakarta Tower will only be world's no.2 by the time its completed.
Blue_Sky July 6th, 2005, 03:08 PM thats too bad...
we are that close to get the title :(:(
sanhen July 6th, 2005, 04:08 PM Somehow I feel that the developers do have a vision for no. 1 in the world. I think its possible they have some plan in secret. Maybe they did not disclose the newest plan so nobody will beat them again hehehehe *hoping*

RafflesCity July 9th, 2005, 12:53 AM great update encon!

ncon August 14th, 2005, 05:40 AM people any idea who will be the tallest tower in the world as BURJ DUBAI claimed to be tallest tower (to more that is mor to building than tower) while China plan/u/c the 610m tower Dubai started u/c for the 700/750m tower
???
Alvin August 14th, 2005, 08:21 AM I'm actually worried about this project, I have a feeling its been indefinitely postponed or delayed, or cancelled altogether...from your pictures u took in june, encon, I don't see any progress whatsoever. And I read somewhere recently that construction of this tower hasn't actually commenced.
JAG2 August 14th, 2005, 08:04 PM I thought so , always a disappointment
627 August 14th, 2005, 08:42 PM yea that sounds logical. hopefully theyre going to redesign it

cOcO_cHaneL August 28th, 2005, 01:17 PM so it's actually under construction? i thought in previous posts someone wrote it's postponed or sumthin?
David-80 August 28th, 2005, 01:34 PM its postponed, i dont know what is going on but the place is empty and since the beginning there wasnt any billboard mentioning the jakarta tower.
There was a brochure about the apartment in megaglodok which was mentioning about Jakarta tower. But the words jakarta tower has been gone since may 2005 from the booklet.
cheers
