Cebu Pacific flies direct Manila-Ozamiz for as low as P1,188 all-in

JG Summit Holdings Inc. airline business unit, Cebu Pacific (CEB) is offering a direct Manila-Ozamiz service starting June 16 2009; starts with a one-way ‘Go Lite’ seat sale fare of P1,188 all-in.

The seat sale runs from May 7 to 12 and is good for travel from June 16 to July 31. The four-times weekly Airbus A319 Manila-Ozamiz service departs for Ozamiz at 5:55am and lands at 7:20am. It leaves Ozamiz at 7:50am and arrives in Manila at 9:15am.

“The introduction of our trademark low fares to travelers from Manila to Ozamiz will spur more business and tourism activities in Ozamiz and its neighboring areas. We hope to further boost growth in this area, as we have done in other parts of the country where we currently operate,” said Candice Iyog, CEB vice president for marketing and distribution.”

Iyog added, “This new service will also offer travelers a more convenient travel option with our fast 1-hour and 25 minute flight as compared with a three-day ferry boat ride.”

“We are relieved that Cebu Pacific now has an Ozamiz-Manila route. This will provide quality air travel service to the public, and will make Ozamiz City more accessible to more travelers around the world. Our sincerest congratulations and appreciation to Cebu Pacific Air and we look forward to this development,” Hon. Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., City of Ozamiz.

After the seat sale, CEB’s lowest year-round ‘Go Lite’ fare for Manila-Ozamiz is at P1,888 all-in. This is a price cut of 20-percent from current fares offered by other airlines for this route.

CEB has also announced a seat sale for its Davao-Cagayan de Oro, Cebu-Roxas and Manila-Cauayan services with a ‘Go lite’ seat sale fare of P288 all-in. This is good for travel from May 14 to July 31.

Go Lite’ fares are for passengers traveling with no check-in baggage. Passengers with check-in bags just have to add P200 to the fare.

For bookings, passengers may log on to www.cebupacificair.com or call the reservations hotline at 70-20-888 (Manila) / 230-8888 (Cebu), or visit their nearest travel agent.
Now on its 14th year, CEB has the youngest aircraft fleet in the Philippines. It flies to 15 international cities across Asia and 31 domestic destinations.

It's a smaller town or province, even in the US, small towns about the size of ozamis has the same small airport that looks like town hall or even a small public school. Our airport here in this little bitty town was that way at first until the passenger activities climbed up to a million passengers yearly. But, I wouldn't mind if small airports like these in the Philippines can be remodelled and designed to look a bit more modern looking atleast.

Definitely much larger than the 737. As an added bonus, those who want to fly Mabuhay Class can finally do so!

RPMO heats up as airlines battle for air supremacy

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj53/svenz_2008/pbozamisairport080222a.jpg

Ozamiz - Philippine Airlines may have won the battle early by keeping its competitor, low cost carrier Cebu Pacific out of its terminal building but has not deterred 5J to slowly swallow its market share away from its subsidiary, firstly, from Air Philippines and second, from PAL Express when it introduced service to the newly reopened airport late last year.

Ozamiz Labo airport re-opened to the public on July 11, 2007 with President Gloria Arroyo gracing the opening ceremony after the arrival of Air Philippines 737 flight from Manila.

Since then, Air Philippines was the sole operator until the entry of Cebu Pacific on November 10, 2008 with routes to Cebu using its brand new ATR planes competing head on with PAL's second hand Q400 planes on the same day. PAL Express flew to the airport on September that year.

It took Cebu Pacific only 6 months to eat and take away the market lead and headway of both Air Philippines and PAL Express. Similar scenarios has been happening in Dumaguete and Naga where both airlines wrestle for market lead and passenger demands.

This month, the competition will go to the next level as both airlines will introduce A319 aircraft to the airport after the runway extension project was completed a month ago.

Philippine Airlines will introduce a daily service to the airport on June 15 replacing the 20 years old Boeing 737-200 plane of its subsidiary Air Philippines while Cebu Pacific jet will land at Ozamiz airport the next day on a four times a week service to usher a new era of competition for direct jet flights to Manila.

The competition is so hot at Ozamiz Airport that most of Manila bound passengers content themselves of traveling via Cebu on a discounted fare rather than opting for a direct flight service offered by Air Philippines later on a day. Its no wonder why Cebu Pacific offered its flight in the morning rather than the usual mid-day flight for secondary destinations.

The airport is the gateway for both Ozamiz and Pagadian Cities where bulk of the airline passengers came from but such demand may have to change three months from now as the Pagadian airport goes on line and re-opens to the public this September for commercial operation.

It is expected that its present passenger volume will be split up again once both airlines start serving Pagadian airport.

As far as I know, PR no longer codeshares with 2P, or vice-versa.

PR still codeshares w/ 2P on all its routes to OZC, WNP, ILO, PPS and CGY. I always encounter pax w/ codeshare tickets of PR to 2P operated flight at the check-in counter.

Sky Harbor
June 11th, 2009, 02:36 PM
^^ I don't call it a codeshare for practical purposes. The level of codesharing between PR and 2P is only on interline benefits, and that's about it. A full codeshare agreement would entail the earning of Mabuhay Miles (and the recognition of Mabuhay Miles elite status) on 2P, seamless transfers between PR and 2P flights, etc. These are things noticeably absent from the PR-2P codeshare, even if 2P is an LCC.

dashalvin
June 12th, 2009, 01:17 PM
The reason why mag give-up ang Air Phil and will be replace by PR bcoz Ozamiznon knew na 20 yrs old na ang Boeing 747-200 ng AirPhil at sa pagpasok ng CebuPac na new ang planes, kelangan nilang magpalit to provide quality air travel.

Sky Harbor

^^ Uhh...you mean a Boeing 737-200. Not only were the 747-200s scrapped earlier in this decade (2004 or 2005), a fully-loaded 742 won't even be able to take off, let alone land, in Ozamiz.

I also think that it is not a "Full Codeshare" agreement between 2P and PR as MMiles are not credited, etc. But as per their resa/tkt system call it.. there is a codeshare of flights between the two. Only in MMiles accreditation is not shared between the two but other benefits like free shuttles services, and transfers in case of disruptions are shared by the 3 - PR, 2P and PALex.

On a juicy note... 2P gave OZC to their bigger sister PR as they get to serve Surigao which they get from their another sister, PALEx. Now, though PALex looses Surigao it gets a route to Pagadian. Hmmm... everything is like a sister act.

It's quite a milestone, as I will be the check-in agent for the last flight of 2P to OZC on Monday morning... quite sad but I'm happy PAL now arrives in OZC... competition is just heating up!

PAL returns to Ozamiz June 16

Philippine Airlines is flying back to Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, beginning June 16, offering air travelers the most comfortable cabin amenities onboard PAL's brand-new Airbus A319-100, including the only business class service in the domestic airline industry.

The daily Ozamiz service – PR 163 – departs Manila at 11:45 AM, arriving Ozamiz 1:10 PM. The return flight – PR 164 – leaves Ozamiz 1:50 PM, to land in Manila at 3:15 PM.

PAL's 134-seater A319-100 jet aircraft has eight Recaro seats in Mabuhay class where passengers are served hot meals.

Ozamiz City – PAL's 19th destination in its domestic network – was first served by PAL in 1951 using the most reliable workhorse aircraft of that era, the DC-3.

Starting June 16, 2009, PAL will still honor Air Philippines tickets to Ozamiz after the low-cost carrier turns over its operations at Ozamiz to PAL. Air Philippines ticket-holders to Ozamiz should check-in at NAIA Terminal 2.

AirPhil flies to Surigao, PAL takes over Ozamiz route

Air Philippines (AirPhil), the low-cost carrier of the Lucio Tan Group, will soon fly to Surigao as it turns over its Ozamiz City operations on June 16, 2009 to its sister company, Philippine Airlines (PAL).

AirPhil decided to leave Ozamiz after observing the city's rapid economic expansion that requires bigger aircraft to accommodate the growing volume of air travelers and cargo.

With PAL's return to Ozamiz after an absence of 11 years, travelers will enjoy PAL's full-service amenities on ground and onboard its brand-new Airbus A319-100 aircraft. This includes PAL's exclusive Mabuhay class where passengers are served hot meals during the one-hour-25-minute flight from Manila and vice versa.

Meanwhile, AirPhil will start daily jet service between Manila and Surigao starting July 1, 2009. Flights from Manila will depart 8:45 am, arriving Surigao at 10:15 am. The return flight leaves Surigao airport at 10:45 am and lands in Manila 12:15 pm. AirPhil operates at the new Terminal 3.

PAL's daily flights to Ozamiz in Misamis Occidental leaves Manila at 11:45 am and departs Ozamiz for Manila at 1:50 pm. Passengers holding Air Philippines tickets for Ozamiz will be accommodated on PAL flights and are advised to check-in at NAIA Terminal 2. Likewise, well-wishers can meet passengers from Ozamiz in Terminal 2, where PAL operates all its fights.

AirPhil is yielding its lucrative Ozamiz market to PAL for the greater convenience of its loyal patrons. Passengers welcomed the move as they look forward to PAL's safe, reliable and value-for-money service.

In the old system, OZC was previously a secondary airport. Today, quite ironically, OZC is a community airport, a designation usually meant for airports whose primary traffic is GA (general aviation) traffic, and not commercial service. Incidentally as well, most community airports have no commercial service whatsoever.

Yap, same sila. Mas marami pangang flight frequency ang OZC-CEB kaysa DPL-CEB dahil MWF lang sa amin pero ang 5J DPL-MNL ay everyday.

I was hoping Ozamiz to be in the big league with bigger apron and longer runway and with the introduction of PAL and CEB jets that could have been the case but from what I am seeing, they still need a kerosene truck to make a return flight which only means one thing, weight restricted flight. And that can be cause by short runway. Its barely enough for the A319. A heavier plane with return fuel rolls further down the runway than with those barely with reserves.

From airport perspective, Dipolog has more capacity than Ozamiz, both for passengers and cargo, as well as certified aircraft type, as it can easily accommodate a fully loaded A320. Even a 321 if you will. It has longer and wider runways too. Its classified as a 4D airport similar to the airports of Butuan, Cagayan de Oro and Cotabato.

Historically, Ozamiz and Pagadian had more flights to Cebu than Dipolog but it has more passengers bound for Manila because of business tourists that used Dakak.

Dipolog traditionally served the market for Ozamiz and Pagadian passengers bound for Manila. When Ozamiz airport opens a flight to Manila through Air Philippines, it was initially expected that Dipolog traffic will decline tremendously but it never happened as only Pagadian and Ozamiz bound passengers were taken out. National and Local government employees from Misamis Occidental continued to fly out of Dipolog airport which is quite a surprise. You can actually see vehicles from Oroquieta City parked outside the terminal while its traffic bounced back months later after Ozamiz-Manila flights.

But with the opening of PAL and CEB flights to Ozamiz, it may be a different ball game altogether.

Now, Dipolog airport reported fewer passenger these days. It may end up with fewer flights soon like Kalibo is right now when Caticlan was invaded by ATR and Q300's, unless it can manage to find more passengers from its tourism industry like Tagbilaran did within a catchment area that has become smaller.

Huhu... That's sad for Dipolog. I hope I can help but sadly I can't. If we can only erase the stigma of Zamboanga to our province, it can be a good help to attract tourists. As soon as Pagadian airport will be opened, Ozamiz flights will also be affected. Do you have any idea ariane on the future airlines that will serve Pagadian airport? Will it still be PAL A319 or Q400 or Air Phils B737-200?

Expansion and development of the airport particularly its runway, tarmac and passenger terminal building continued again in the 1st quarter of 2008. Come July 2009, implementation of the asphalt overlay will begin for the entire 1.9 kilometer runway, apron and taxiway. This includes the setting up of runway lights to accomodate night flight operations. Ozamiz city airport also serves the cities of Oroquieta and Tangub, Municipalities of Zamboanga del Sur and Lanao del Norte. It is the only airport in the province of Misamis Occidental.

The pre-departure lounge of Ozamiz airport is much improved now. It has more passenger seats, a bigger comfort room, a cable television set , Mobile phone battery charging counter, infant Diaper change table, 6 split type air-conditioners, etc. A Walk through detector for inspection and security has been installed. However, There is no baggage scanner/X-ray machine for hand- carried bags yet inside the pre-departure area.

Rare classic photos of CebuPac Air's check-in counter (left photo) and Pre-departure lounge (right photo) on Nov. 10, 2008 (Maiden flight of Cebu pacific Air's Ozamiz to Cebu). On their second flight, Pre-departure lounge was then transferred to the terminal. However, Cebu Pac's Check-in counter still remains outside the terminal due to lack of space. TREES

by: Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Philippine Airlines may cut jobs, reduce flights
CHERYL M. ARCIBAL, GMANews.TV
08/27/2009 | 05:15 PM

Philippines Airlines (PAL) announced it may cut jobs and may mount fewer flights after posting multi-million dollar losses at the end of its fiscal year in March.

“Decisive steps" will be taken to help PAL survive the crisis after the Lucio Tan-owned airline posted $301.4 million in losses as of end-March this year, the company said in a statement.

These steps include cutting its workforce and realigning operations to match demand, the company added.

Management will offer early retirement packages for its employees as a way of enhancing productivity and reducing costs, Jaime J. Bautista, PAL president and chief operating officer, said.

The company is currently reviewing its entire organizational set-up to make the workforce “lean and mean," he added.

PAL shares the same predicament with giant airlines whose operations were severely hit by the slowdown in passenger traffic.

PAL, which claims to be Asia’s first airline, is also set to mount lesser flights to US, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia.

“Seven percent of the airline’s total capacity would be reduced effective this month until March 2010," Bautista said.

However, flights to domestic destinations will be increased.

The company is “eyeing new destinations either through charters or regular scheduled operations," Bautista said.

Besides expecting the delivery of brand new and fuel-efficient Boeing 777-300ERs, the company is also in the final stages of refurbishing its current fleet of wide-bodied aircraft to feature a bi-class configuration, new seats, and state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

In the meantime, PAL shareholders approved a quasi-reorganization plan, reducing the par value of PAL shares to P0.20 from P0.80 per share. It will also increase its authorized capital stock from P16 billion to P20 billion divided into 100 billion shares at P0.20 per share.

During the period, PAL’s revenues rose to $1.634 billion, from $1.504 billion the previous year. Revenues rose because it transported more passengers after the company bought additional aircraft.

However, the cost of operating more flights, which involved higher maintenance costs and compounded by record-high fuel prices, raised expenses to $1.9 billion from $1.539 billion the previous year.

Fuel comprises 44 percent of PAL's operating expenses.

When the global crisis led to a travel slump in the latter part of the year, PAL's passenger load factor fell to an average of 76.2 percent, three points lower than the previous year.

PAL also reported paying $165.4 million in principal and interest to its creditors, bringing to $2.4 billion the total paid amount from March 1999 to March 2009.

With the protracted recession, the International Air Transport Association said its member-airlines are bracing for $9 billion in total combined losses by the end of the current fiscal year. - GMANews.TV

Cebu Pacific posts 21% revenue growth for 1st half of 2009

The country’s leading domestic airline, Cebu Pacific (CEB), generated a total of P11.39 billion in gross revenues from January to June 2009. This made the airline post 21.3% growth, compared to last year’s P9.39 billion.

According to CEB’s parent company JG Summit Holdings Inc. (JGSHI), the airline’s profitability this first semester of 2009 was largely because of additional routes, increase in flight frequencies and capacity due to recently acquired additional Airbus A320 and ATR72-500.

In fact, from a net loss of P15.66 million last year, the low-fare leader posted a net income of P1.82 billion for the first half of 2009 alone.

“We are very happy that despite the economic recession, and the dynamic changes in foreign exchange and fuel costs, we remain a profitable and financially strong airline,” said CEB VP for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog.

“Our low-cost carrier strategy has made more and more people utilize air travel for business and leisure travel. We will continue to offer our value fares and convenient routes for the benefit of our passengers,” she added.

The airline currently operates the newest fleet in the country, composed of 21 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft as well as 8 ATR72-500 aircraft. It expects delivery of 17 more Airbus and two ATR aircraft from the last quarter of 2009 until 2014.

CEB also recently boosted its Manila-Hong Kong service to four times daily, its Manila-Singapore service to thrice daily and its Manila-Kuala Lumpur service to daily flights.

The latest flight schedules and seat sales can be found in the website www.cebupacificair.com.

CEB, also Asia’s third-largest low-cost carrier, flew 6.74 million passengers last year. It now transports even more passengers to 32 domestic and 14 international destinations from its Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao hubs.:rock::rock:

PAL adds new domestic routes, destinations
Philippine Airlines (PAL) is beefing up its domestic services with new routes and destinations in response to the local market's gradual rebound.

Starting September 1, 2009, PAL is introducing a new Cebu-Davao and Davao-Cebu service utilizing the wide-body Airbus A330, while PAL Express will add another daily Cebu-Iloilo-Cebu flight using the 76-seater Q400 turboprop aircraft.

Surigao and Naga are also being added to the PAL Express network with daily flights to Surigao and twice a day service to Naga.

The daily Cebu-Davao service will have a routing Manila-Cebu-Davao-Manila. PR409 leaves Cebu for Davao at 6:05 AM. The reverse route, Manila-Davao-Cebu-Manila, will have the daily PR410 depart Davao for Cebu at 6:25 AM. The new route will link with the regular Manila-Cebu, v.v., and Manila-Davao, v.v., flights.

Meanwhile, PAL Express will start flying to Naga twice a day, leaving Manila at 7:55 AM (PR261) and 1:00 PM (PR263). Another new daily service to Surigao, PR065, departs Manila at 8:45 AM.

A daily Cebu-Iloilo (PR380), v.v., morning service, departing Cebu at 9:15 AM will be added to the existing PR382 that leaves at 3:20 every afternoon.

For flight schedule details of the new routes, passengers may log on to philippineairlines.com or palexpressair.com or contact the PAL Reservations, 855-8888.

Fly PAL using ATM cards :cheers1::cheers1::cheers1:

Internet-ready ATM cards issued by BancNet member-banks may now be used to pay for PAL tickets purchased through the PAL website.

PAL customers without credit cards may now use BancNet ATM cards with debit function and information security, when buying tickets online. The ATM card features a hack-free system controlled by the card owners' Personal Information Number (PIN).

The latest PAL payment scheme innovation – a first for the Philippine aviation industry – affords PAL customers more choices and added convenience in paying for their tickets, without queuing at PAL ticket offices.

PAL has invited other BancNet members to make their ATM cards internet-ready, to be able to extend their service to more customers buying PAL tickets online.

BancNet member-banks that have internet-ready ATM cards include Allied Bank, Asia United Bank, China Bank, Chinatrust Bank, Citystate Savings Bank, Metrobank, PBCom, Philtrust, Postal Bank, RCBC, RCBC Savings, Robinsons Savings Bank, Security Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Sterling Bank.

Air Philippines plans the way ahead while temporarily grounding jet aircraft

Air Philippines Corporation (AirPhil) plans to reinvent itself as the country’s leading low-cost carrier with the adoption of new business plan that will require an immediate, temporary grounding of all flights to stave off further losses.

Captain Ed Medina, President of Air Philippines announced the plan involves increasing AirPhil’s capitalization, acquiring six airbus A320 aircraft, full automation of business processes and organizational restructuring.

Meanwhile, operations have been put on hold, with the grounding of flights to Cagayan de Oro and Puerto Princesa. All other flights will be temporarily grounded on September 1st.

Passengers holding AirPhil tickets will be accommodated on flights of Philippines Airlines, AirPhil’s sister company, without additional charges. Passengers should present their tickets at the PAL check-in counters at NAIA Terminal 2.

AirPhil has suffered on recent months due to high fuel expense, aggravated by the cost of operating fuel inefficient aircraft. AirPhil’s fleet of Boeing 737-200s will be retired prematurely to avoid further losses.

Air Philippines to acquire six new aircraft for $120M
By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes
Monday, January 21, 2008 The Philippine Star

Budget domestic carrier Air Philippines plans to acquire six new aircraft totaling at least $120 million during the fourth quarter of 2008 as part of its modernization and expansion program.
It was learned that the company, owned by taipan Lucio Tan who also controls Philippine Airlines (PAL), will be purchasing initially six Q400s, which are 76-seater planes and sister ship to the Q300s currently being used by Air Philippines.
The acquisition will be financed either through operating lease, finance lease, or export credit, officials revealed.
During the January to December 2007 period, Air Philippines carried a total of one million domestic passengers as compared to PAL’s four million passengers from the latter’s domestic operations alone.
Air Philippines has started flying to Caticlan last Dec. 15 and there are plans to increase the number of flights from four to 12 flights a day utilizing three aircrafts.
The company has just acquired six Bombardier Q300 turbo-prop aircraft amounting to $56 million to serve its expanded route network, including its new Caticlan service, gateway to the island of Boracay.
Air Philippines middle of last year signed a firm order with Toronto-based Bombardier Aerospace for three of the 50-seat airliners and taken options on three more units.
The first Q300, delivered in November 2007, started the Manila-Caticlan run of the airline, which is known for its tourist-friendly ultra-low fares.
Deliveries of the other two firm orders will be in the first quarter of 2008, while the option aircraft, should Air Philippines exercise its rights, are due after 2008.
Air Philippines currently operates eight Boeing 737-200 jet aircraft serving a network of 12 points in the Philippines from hubs in Manila and Cebu. It also operates regular charter flights to points in Korea.
It will be phasing out its Boeing 737-200s and have its future fleet comprising Airbus A320s, newer 737 ‘Classics’ and Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s in addition to Q300s.
The carrier currently operates a fleet of eight 737-200s and one Q300 with two more on order.
Company president Edilberto Medina earlier said the carrier’s first 737-300 is due to be delivered on this month on lease from Air Philippines’ sister carrier PAL, which owns the aircraft.
Medina said Air Philippines this year will begin grounding its eight 737-200s and he predicts that in 2010 it will only have two left and these will be grounded by the end of that year.
It is currently seeking to lease newer 737 Classics and prefers the 737-400 because of its additional capacity, says Medina, adding that it “may purchase the aircraft if the price is right”.
But he also says this is only an interim solution and that starting in 2009 it plans to start adding A320s which will be the mainstay of its future fleet.
PAL has options for five A320s with delivery slots starting in 2009 and Air Philippines hopes to get those aircraft, says Medina, adding that in 2009 PAL would have completed its A320 fleet renewal.
The 737 ‘Classics’ are still needed as interim solution because Air Philippines is no longer willing to wait and incur the high fuel costs that come from operating such old and inefficient aircraft, says Medina, adding that fuel now accounts for 50 percent of the carrier’s total expenses.
It also makes no sense for Air Philippines to spend money on a heavy maintenance check and lap joint airframe check for these aircraft because it would be too costly, he added.
While the A320 seems destined to be the largest aircraft in Air Philippines’ fleet, the airline has become bullish about turboprops since its first Q300 went into scheduled operations last Dec. 15.
“We have had a good response from the Q300 and we never thought it would be a success so quickly,” says Medina.
The carrier is using its Q300 for a four-times-daily service from Manila to Caticlan, the gateway to the Philippines’ famous Boracay beach strip.
Medina said the carrier has until the end of this month to exercise the options it has for three Q300s but he is tight-lipped about the prospects of Air Philippines having a total of six Q300s.
But he revealed that the carrier definitely plans to add Q400s and is now actively seeking leases on six and hopes to have the first arrive in April.
He said the airline chose to seek second-hand Q400s rather than new ones because if it ordered Q400s from Bombardier the first would only be delivered in the last quarter of 2009.
The Q300s will be used exclusively for services from Manila and Cebu to Caticlan but the Q400s will be used on other secondary domestic routes to cities such as Basco, Busuanga, Pagadian and Surigao.
“The Q400s will be focused on secondary route opportunities we can’t support with jet operations,” Medina said, adding that some will be routes PAL used to operate on before it grounded its Fokker 50 turboprops several years ago.
Air Philippines’ push into turboprops means it will be competing against Asian Spirit and Seair which operate older turboprops. :ohno::ohno::ohno:

International air passenger traffic falls during first half, govt says
09/03/2009 | 01:11 PM BusinessWorld

The number of passengers on international flights who passed through the country’s airports dipped just slightly in the first half from the same period last year, despite the feared double impact of the global economic slump and the pandemic scare, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) said on Tuesday.

CAB data show that total international passenger traffic dipped 0.48 percent to 6.26 million in the first six months from 6.29 million in the same period last year, though still higher than 2007 level of 5.76 million.

Incoming passengers totaled 3.25 million, 0.6 percent less than last year’s 3.27 million, accounting for a little more than half the total international passenger traffic flow.

Outgoing passengers, on the other hand, went down 0.33 percent to 3.01 million from 3.02 million in the same comparative periods.

"Decline in international passenger traffic was better than expected despite forecasts that overseas travel will be impacted [sic] by the global crisis and the A(H1N1) virus scare[but] the second wave of A(H1N1) remains a threat to airlines’ international operations...in the second half of this year," CAB deputy executive director Porvenir P. Porciuncula said in a phone interview.

The International Air Transport Association said international passenger traffic in June fell 7.2 percent year-on-year, amid a bleak outlook for the rest of the year.

The group saw the biggest decline in Asia Pacific, where the drop was 14.5 percent in June.

Philippine Airlines (PAL), which topped the passenger traffic of 32 other carriers on CAB’s list, accounting for more than a sixth of the total, saw its traffic dipping 9 percent year on year to 1.74 million in the first half.

PAL officials were not immediately available for comment.

Cebu Pacific Air, which came in second, saw its traffic rising 18.7 percent to 797,523 passengers from 671,738.

Candice A. Iyog, Cebu Pacific vice-president for marketing and distribution, said in a phone interview that the growth can be attributed to low fares and more aircrafts.

She said customers who took advantage of the carrier’s "Go Lite" fares, which offer low all-in rates for passengers without check-in baggage starting mid-last year, accounted for 15 percent-20 percent of its total.

She clarified, however, that the rise in international passengers of almost a fifth did not contribute significantly in the carrier’s revenues because the average ticket price is lower by a tenth.

The rest of the top 10 carriers on CAB’s list were: Cathay Pacific Airways, down 0.8 percent to 735,817; Singapore Airlines, down 5.2 percent to 272,008; Asiana Airlines, up 74.89 percent to 252,273; Northwest Airlines, down 11.54 percent to 233,870; Emirates Air, up 4.15 percent to 226,800; Japan Airlines, down 3.08 percent to 215,746; Qatar Airways, up 19.98 percent to 212,798; and Korean Air, down 13.67 percent to 196,507. - J. Cebu Pacific posts turnaround amid global recession
09/01/2009 | 03:28 PM

Gokongwei-led Cebu Pacific Air Inc. reversed last year’s losses as it increased routes, flight frequencies and capacity with the purchase of more Airbus A320 and ATR72-500.

In a statement, Cebu Pacific said it had posted a P1.82 billion net income during the first semester from P15.66-million net loss the same period last year.

“We are very happy that despite the economic recession, and the dynamic changes in foreign exchange and fuel costs, we remain a profitable and financially strong airline," Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog.

Revenues grew by 21.3 percent to P11.39 billion from P9.39 billion.

Asia’s third largest low-cost carrier transports more passengers to 32 domestic and 14 international destinations from its Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao hubs.

It currently operates the newest fleet in the country, composed of 21 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft as well as 8 ATR72-500 aircraft. It expects delivery of 17 more Airbus and two ATR aircraft from the last quarter of 2009 until 2014.

Recently, it increased its Manila-Hong Kong service to four times daily, its Manila-Singapore service to thrice daily and its Manila-Kuala Lumpur service to daily flights.

“Our low-cost carrier strategy has made more and more people utilize air travel for business and leisure travel. We will continue to offer our value fares and convenient routes for the benefit of our passengers," she added. -Ruby Anne M. Rubio, GMANews.TV

CEB rank moves up in Asia’s Top 10 budget airline list
Now ranks 4th

Asia’s third largest low cost carrier, Cebu Pacific (CEB) went up in the rankings in Smart Travel Asia’s Top 10 Budget Airlines of 2009 poll. From last year’s rank of 5th, the airline moved up to 4th place.

SmartTravelAsia.com, Asia’s leading online travel magazine with one million readers worldwide, revealed the results of their May-July 2009 Best in Travel survey recently.

Low cost carriers were rated based on ticket prices, schedule reliability, quality of service, route network and access. Aside from airlines, they also polled their readers in top destinations, hotels and resorts.

“We are happy that the website’s worldwide audience appreciated Cebu Pacific’s great value fares and flights and voted. Our growth and expansion in the Asian and domestic markets are very exciting, and we are glad that people have noticed,” said CEB VP for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog.

“This year, we started flying to 11 new routes. We also expect delivery of two ATR-7200 aircraft by the end of the year, which will surely provide our passengers with convenient air travel, low fares, and more flights, frequencies and destinations,” she added.

In 2009, CEB began services from Manila to Catarman, Virac, Cauayan, Calbayog and Ozamiz; from Cebu to Cotabato, Legazpi, Dumaguete, Siargao and Roxas; and from Davao to Cagayan de Oro.

“To emphasize our lead in innovative offerings online, we also just launched our Twitter promo where all followers of cebupacific5J on www.twitter.com can avail of P1000 discount per one-way flight to any domestic or international destination,” she added.

The Twitter promo is until September 13, 2009, and is valid for travel from September 22 to October 31, 2009.

For more information, call the airline’s reservation hotlines (02) 7020-888 or (032) 232-888, or check the website www.cebupacificair.com .

Since its inception in 1996, CEB has flown over 36 million passengers. Other firsts offered by Cebu Pacific were the all-inclusive fares, prepaid excess baggage, Go Lite fares, and paperless ticketing.

CEB October seats up for grabs
Any domestic destination for P899

The country’s leading domestic carrier, Cebu Pacific (CEB), offers P899 ‘Go Lite’ seats to any domestic destination from September 17-18, 2009 only, for travel from October 1-31, 2009.

Passengers with check-in luggage will just add P100 upon booking.

CEB, also Asia’s third-largest low cost carrier, has 50 routes in 32 domestic destinations, making it the airline with the most number of flights in the country.

Recently, it started flying to Cauayan (Isabela), Calbayog and Catarman in Samar and Virac, Catanduanes. It maintains its monopoly routes such as Cebu-Siargao, Cebu-Legazpi, Davao-Iloilo and Davao-Cagayan de Oro, among others.

“We expect more Filipinos to travel this October because of the semestral break and proximity of the travel period to All Saints and All Souls Day. This seat sale will allow travelers to bring their families and friends to new destinations, and to fly home more often—both of which are our goals as an airline company,” said CEB VP for marketing and product Candice Iyog.

Passengers can avail of this seat sale through the recently launched CEB payment center facility. Guests booking online can opt to pay for their bookings over the counter at Robinsons Bank, Banco de Oro and Metrobank, or via ATM at Robinsons Bank, Metrobank, and other Megalink and Bancnet members.

“We are doing this in order to widen our reach. Now, travelers who have no credit cards can likewise book CEB’s best deals and lowest fares through the website, and pay through our payment centers,” Iyog said.

Passengers are encouraged to book their flights through the reservation hotlines (02) 7020-888 or (032) 230-888, the payment centers (ATM or over-the-counter) or the website www.cebupacificair.com .

Gokongwei-owned CEB flies to 1,600 domestic flights per week. Since its inception in 1996, it has flown over 36 million passengers from its four hubs (Manila, Cebu, Davao and Clark), using the youngest fleet of aircraft in the country.
