Located on the mainland at Iganmu, it is about a half hour drive from Lagos Island. Built in 1977 as the principal forum for the International Festival of Black Arts and Culture, it has now become accepted as the prime center for performing arts in the country. The main auditorium has the capacity to seat around 3,000 persons and the conference hall can accommodate around 700 people. The building also houses two cinema halls, a restaurant and a bar.

why?

What a question.

With a proper set up you should have plays, concerts, exhibitions, cultural events, seminars, workshops in that place every day of the week. The theatre doesn't even have a website! Check out the National Theatre London website by contrast. On there you'll see their itinerary and scheduled events listed from now till next year, plus gallery, ticket purchase facilities, pictorial tour of the theatre etc etc.

You don't just build a National Theatre and leave it like that with no readily accessible info on its operations.

It's a beautiful building. But, buildings like this are too often separated from cities in Africa. There's too much grass around it, and it's just too remote. It may have made sense for the holding of FESTAC in the 70s but now Nigeria, and Lagos, need a complex more like Lincoln Center or the Royal Albert Hall - in the city, right on major streets.

As I know one of Blue Line stations arises beside National Theatre. It can change this situation and the environment .

This is true, I made the point in another thread.

There are actually two blue line stations near the National theatre, one of them should be directly near the theatre.

I have been to a few events there, and when a kid it its heyday I did go watch a few movies there. It is a wonderful structure. The rumor back then was General Murtala Muhammed in a meeting with the design team, dropped his military hat on the table and asked them to design that shape!

Never found out if the story is true or not. Now I am almost sure it has been taken over by one church or another.

It's not true, it was modelled after this building in Bulgaria

Unless it happened this way

The general dropped his hat, and then someone said.....wait a minute....I know of a building like the one you are thinking of....it is in Bulgaria, let us get the Bulgarians to design it.

All I know is the Buglarians designed it and it was modelled after the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria
