Casino firms deposit $400m (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business1_june11_2009)
By Elaine Ramos Alanguilan

Investors of the proposed $15-billion entertainment and tourism complex covering 300 hectares of reclaimed land on Manila Bay have jointly made a deposit of $400 million to jump-start the development of the project.

“The investors put in the deposit of $300 million to $400 million as part of the requirement to ensure they are really serious about the investment,” said Efraim Genuino, chairman of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., yesterday. Pagcor is spearheading the development of the complex.

He told reporters that SM Investments Corp., Genting Berhad Group of Malaysia and Aruze Corp. of Japan had deposited at least $100 million each into the project.

He said the amount would initially bankroll the investments needed for the first phase of the project, which would include the hotel, sports arena, retail complex, oceanarium and museum.

He said Pagcor would fence the perimeter of the site after two months when minor issues over land ownership were already resolved.

“The first phase should be completed after three years. It is delayed a bit from the original schedule,” said Genuino.

The proposed Bagong Nayong Pilipino-Manila Bay Integrated City is a tourism resort complex that will be developed on a reclaimed land along the Manila Bay area. Proponents can avail of fiscal incentives from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Genuino earlier said the investors must invest between $7 billion and $10 billion over the next three to five years.

The terms of reference for the project require each group to spend at least $400 million in the first two-and-a-half years of development.

Genuino said the multi-billion dollar investments, without cost to government, would create employment, revenue and additional business opportunities to allied industries such as construction, information technology, food and beverage, hospitality, entertainment and transportation.

Aruze is known worldwide for manufacturing some of the most innovative and technologically advanced gaming machines in the market. It is also known for its well-established ties with Wynn Resorts and major stockholder of the company in the United States and Macau.

Its concept, the Okada Resort Manila Bay, is designed as an integrated casino resort featuring a hotel with 2,000 standard rooms and 300 VIP suites, a major oceanarium designed to be the world’s largest, theaters and a giant Ferris wheel similar to the London Eye.

PHILIPPINES INVESTORS DEPOSIT US$300 MLN FOR PAGCOR COMPLEX

MANILA, Jun 12, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- AZECF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The three main investors in a Philippines casino development have deposited US$300 million - US$100 million each - with Pagcor as assurance of their commitment to the project.

SM Group, Genting Group of Malaysia and Aruze Corp. of Japan are the major investors in the 100-hectare Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment Complex along Manila Bay in Pasay City, and intend to pursue plans to develop the property into the country's premier entertainment complex.

"We want to be assured they are committed to do the project and push through with their plans," said Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) chairman Ephraim Genuino.

Initial investments for the project are expected to reach US$6 billion.

About 100 hectares of the 120-hectare track of the Pagcor property are already allotted to these three developers.

Genuino said SM would kick off construction in 60 days with the fencing of the property that it was going to develop.

The first phase of the three-phased development is expected to be completed in two to three years. It will include hotels, sports arena, museum, world class theme park, and an oceanarium.

Genuino is trying to allay the fears and opposition from some sectors that Pagcor is turning the massive development into a version of Macau-Las Vegas gambling fame.

"Only three per cent of the entire development along the Manila Bay is related to gaming and casinos," he said. The Genting Group would be the developer for the casino and gaming portion.

The larger chunk of the complex would be composed of tourism
, entertainment and leisure, and sports facilities.

Included in the new entertainment complex is the already-developed section spanning about 300 hectares that contains the sprawling Mall of Asia complex.

The government has been constantly pushing for the development of the Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City, which Genuino said would create about 200,000 jobs.

The original Nayong Pilipino located near the airport had been closed. It used to showcase the country's pride including famous tourist spots with a touch of history and culture.

Genuino said there were some new foreign operators that had expressed an interest to put additional investment into the complex.

He said these three foreign groups - American, European and Korean - all had existing gaming operations elsewhere and were currently being investigated and assessed by Pagcor to determine if they could also take part in the development of Pagcor City. He did not give further details.

Among the requirements to be part of the Pagcor City development were a minimum investment of US$1 billion towards the investor's intended projects which should be completed in five years and the submission of a concept plan and design.

It would take between three to six months before Pagcor could then determine if these potential new investors could participate, Genuino said.

Among the requirements to be part of the Pagcor City development were a minimum investment of US$1 billion towards the investor's intended projects which should be completed in five years and the submission of a concept plan and design.

It would take between three to six months before Pagcor could then determine if these potential new investors could participate, Genuino said.

I'm guessing the American group would be the Las Vegas Sands. If it is them, expect that a Venetian Resort that will be comparable with the one in Macau to built in BNP. Or if it is Harrah's Entertainment, we may have the first Caesar's Palace in Asia. Or maybe the MGM group.

The chairman is a political appointee. He goes when his appointer goes. This project is his baby - just look at the ads. His face is on the official Bida and whatever T-shirts. That Manila Eye and Second-tallest-observation-tower-in-the-World......after he is out of the picture, not likely. Some of the Pagcor City will be pushed through, not necessarily all, depending on the next administration. And a legal freeze on the acceptance of construction or any other kind of contract with the government - before the election - is coming up.

I'm for any progress but let's have reasonable expectations.

SM expected to pour in $1B

MANILA, Philippines - The state-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. expects the infusion of $6 billion worth of fresh investments into the development of the 800-hectare entertainment complex on Roxas Boulevard.

The SM group, one of the big investors in the “Pagcor City” project, is now finalizing plans for its piece of the gaming and entertainment complex, Pagcor chair Efraim Genuino said in an interview.

Genuino expects the SM group to pour in “more or less” $1 billion.

SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) recently added a fifth division to focus on the burgeoning hotel and tourism business. Its other core interests are retailing, shopping mall development, banking and condominium development.

SMIC is among the local and foreign investors working on Pagcor City. Other big investors that have committed to the project are property tycoon Andrew Tan’s Alliance Global Group Inc., in partnership with the Genting group’s Star Cruises Ltd., and Aruze Corp. of Japan, the financier of casino bigwig Steve Wynn.

According to Genuino, Pagcor is now finalizing all the documentation needed to be able to work on the reclaimed land in Manila so that the investors may start working on their respective sites. He said Aruze would infuse around $3 billion to the project.

He said the investors would ride on Pagcor’s license, while the gaming firm would be entitled to a 25-percent share of gross income from the project.

Genuino also said that casinos would constitute only a small part of the entertainment complex.

“There will be about three casinos, but they will only be about 3 percent of the development,” Genuino said. “The bulk would be (devoted to) entertainment, such as for Warner Brothers.”

The government aims to attract 10 million foreign visitors to Pagcor City within five years.

The vision is for Pagcor City to become the “Macau” or “Las Vegas” of the Philippines, offering an array of arcades, white beaches and lagoons, shopping malls, hotels, specialty restaurants, wellness centers/spas, cultural center, sports arena and theme parks.

For instance, the project aims to put up a simulated winter park with skating and skiing facilities, as well as a Marina complex.

Likewise planned is the establishment of an observation tower offering a panoramic view of Manila, which is targeted to be the tallest in the world.

The Pagcor City development is expected to be built in phases, eventually attracting over $10 billion in foreign direct investments.

Reinforcing the structure down to the seabed prevents it to be less prone to be torn down.

Kasi sa reclaimed land, mahal talaga ang gastos at nagkataon pang nasa eathquake-prone zone ang Manila.

Six Flags files for bankruptcy

Six Flags, the US theme park operator and developer of one of Dubailand's attractions, has gone bust. Randi Sokoloff / The National

Sara Hamdan and Sarmad Khan
Last Updated: June 14. 2009 10:57PM UAE / June 14. 2009 6:57PM GMT

Six Flags, the US theme park giant that planned to develop one of Dubailand’s largest attractions, is seeking bankruptcy protection after its shares slumped 86 per cent in a year. The fate of the multibillion-dollar Six Flags project in Dubai was unclear yesterday, after the theme park operator filed a petition in a Delaware bankruptcy court that listed assets of US$3 billion (Dh11.01bn) and debts of $2.4bn.

Six Flags and Tatweer, the owner of Dubailand and part of Dubai Holding, signed an agreement in March last year to develop “thrill-driven” parks across the Gulf region.

“Six Flags are a strong consumer brand with world–class attractions that Tatweer remains committed to bringing to Dubai. While we are aware of the restructuring, we do not comment on the financial details of any of our partners,” Tatweer said.

Six Flags Dubailand was the first of several projects that the firm was planning to develop. The conceptual master plan was finalised in May last year and the first phase of the theme park was scheduled to be completed in 2011 with 30 rides and projections of an estimated three million visitors every year.

Under the agreement, Six Flags Dubailand was to include entertainment franchises such as the children’s musical group Wiggles and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, and Six Flag’s original programming such as Operation Spygirl, branded restaurants, hotels and retail outlets.

The vast Dubailand project is a key part of the emirate’s efforts to attract 15 million tourists by 2015 and includes a collection of multibillion-dollar projects such as the DreamWorks animation park, Universal Studios and City of Arabia. But the global slowdown in travel, falling property prices and tighter finance have hit some of the attractions planned for the 27,000-hectare site.

Dubai’s hotels and apartments accommodated a total of about 7.53 million guests last year compared with about 6.95 million in 2007, according to government data.
“It will be interesting to see whether it can rise from ashes if someone else takes over Six Flags and then continues the relationship with Tatweer,” said Miles Payne, a partner at Strutt and Parker, an international property consultancy based in Dubai.

Six Flags sought bankruptcy protection three-and-a-half years after Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, became chairman and hired new managers in an attempt to return the firm to profitability. Mr Snyder began a shake-up of Six Flags in late 2005 after winning three seats on the board. The 48-year-old company has not posted an annual profit since 1998 and had losses of $558.8 million in the two years after Mr Snyder became chairman.

Six Flags shares have fallen 86 per cent in the past 12 months as investors have grown sceptical about the company’s ability to refinance preferred income equity redeemable shares, or PIERS, before their August redemption date.

Six Flags said it was seeking court approval for a pre-arranged reorganisation plan that would cut its debt by about $1.8bn and eliminate more than $300m of preferred stock obligations. The reorganisation plan has yet to be filed with the court.

Any debt-for-equity exchange offers by the company have ended due to the bankruptcy filing, Six Flags said in the statement.

Hindi naman siguro.

nabasa ko before sa uae subforum na on-hold ang dubai land, so ngayon wala na talaga sayang.

At least may time pa silang mag-isip kung ano ang ipapalit nila.

Warner Bros naman yung sa atin eh.

Sayang lang talaga... overdeveloped kasi ang Dubai... more supply than demand.

Yan ang problema ng Dubai ngayon.

They had more and more than enough office space than any else in the world.

Masyado na silang nagiging ambisyoso. Gusto nila andun na lahat sa kanila.

Largest, biggest, tallest. Name it. Gusto nila. Because they have the money to do so.

With what has happened in Dubai, dapat talagang mas maging cautious and practical with the expectations with Entertainment City.
Dubai with all its momentum and resources and yet bumitin pa youn Dubailand project.

Yes the tallest tower will not be funded by the government but with enormous amount of money needed to build the tower (don't even consider the engineering aspect), how we be sure that this private group can finish it?

Baka magaya tayo dito sa world tallest hotel in North Korea.
"Construction began in 1987 and ceased in 1992. The unfinished hotel remained untouched until April 2008, when construction resumed after being inactive for 16 years."

WB filing for bankruptcy nga eh. Bakit pa natin gugustohin mag invest ang isang company na having financial problems. Huwag ng pilitin. Good Bye WB theme park. Hope they stay away from Entertainment City until they fix their financial problems.

No need to wait that long, terman.

Just go to the casino on the ground floor of the Maxim's Hotel in about October of this year. The rest of the hotel -it's luxury all the way, mainly intended for VERY wealthy gamblers who will get the rooms on a complimentary basis - well, anyway, the rest of the Maxim's hotel will not be finished until next year.

But the Marriot will be open by August-September of this year, and many of the condos. And for those who blow thier savings, there's a McDonald's (not bloody likely there will be a Jollibee in this AGI development - AGI which owns the McDo franchise for the Philippines .)

FUJITSU eyes Manila as hub of business software operations
GMANews.TV
June 18, 2009

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is being eyed as the hub of Fujitsu’s SAP (Systems and Application Program) and Oracle enterprise solutions and services, which are software applications used by companies.

This was announced after Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand was recently acquired by Australian-based Supply Chain Consulting Pty. Ltd., which has a local subsidiary.

The acquisition resulted in the creation of Fujitsu-Supply Chain, which is “expected to generate additional SAP income for both companies, with consolidated IT, communications solutions, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) products."

The same transaction also intends to improve the company’s current capabilities by “exporting services and increasing investments in employment, training, infrastructure and technology," said Raymond Lacdao, director of Supply Chain Consulting Philippines.

Currently, Fujitsu-Supply Chain is “serving support customers in Hong Kong, Australia, and Thailand," he added.

It also plans to increase investments, a move allowing it to “accept bigger capacity for more international work."

“Fujitsu has expressed confidence in the Philippine operations, and plans are currently underway to build out the Manila site into a center of excellence for the region in the ERP space," it added.

Fujitsu-Supply Chain handles “finance, accounting and other needs of a company."

Although Fujitsu-Supply Chain holds about P300-million worth of business in the Philippines, the company is raring to get more, particularly from the government.

The company was invited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) to bid for a project,

“Based on its requirements, it could be for Pagcor City," Lacdao added.

Hotel, resort, and casino construction in the 800-hectare Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City is currently in full swing.

Pagcor is requiring investors in the mixed-use commercial, retail, and entertainment complex to put in at least $1 billion in capital outlay for any project.

Some $20 billion is needed for the Pagcor City’s development, which has acquired local investors and those from Malaysia, Japan, US, Europe and South Korea.

Fujitsu-Supply Chain is also currently serving the SAP requirements of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and state pension fund Social Security System.

Top companies such as those in telecommunications industry employs SAP and Oracle applications, Lacdao explained.

Fujitsu’s local subsidiary is also hiring 100 more employees to fill up the company’s “identified requirements," the company said.

Fujitsu has two options in its plan to ramp up its current work force: by tapping on the fresh graduates of technical and IT courses, and end users of SAP and Oracle solutions. - GMANews.TV

Megaworld still expecting higher profits

Andrew L. Tan-led property company Megaworld Corp. expects lower reservation sales this year but remains optimistic that it will close the year with higher profits.

"We feel some effect of the global crisis but we are confident that we will meet our P4 billion net income target this year," Megaworld Executive Director Kingson U. Sian told reporters at the sidelines of the company’s stockholders meeting on Friday. The P4-billion target is higher than the P3.8 billion in profits posted in 2008.

Mr. Sian however said Megaworld does not expect a repeat of last year’s reservation sales performance because of the economic slowdown, but sees the company equalling its 2007 sales.

"Last year was the best year in our over 20-year history. Reservation sales will likely be slower this year as people are nervous and tend to hold back a bit," he said. "Still, we are quite happy with the rate that we are going now and we will likely meet or exceed our reservation sales in 2007 which is another record year."

Megaworld’s reservation sales hit P24 billion last year, higher than the P19 billion posted in 2007. For the first three months of the year, Megaworld’s reservations stood at P7 billion, already higher than the P5 billion posted in 2007.

Megaworld plans to spend around P8 billion to P9 billion for projects this year, lower than the P10 billion spent last year. It also plans to launch five new residential projects worth P12 billion, namely Two Central in Makati City, another project in Eastwood City, Palmtree in Newport, and phase two of The Venice and Morgan Suites in Taguig’s Fort Bonifacio.

Mr. Sian also said Megaworld is finalizing plans for its 40-hectare project at the entertainment complex being built by the state gambling monopoly,:banana:and is already completing a plan to build an "iconic building" on a five-hectare lot at Paseo de Roxas in Makati.

Megaworld will also build two new Richmonde Hotels in Quezon City’s Eastwood commercial center and in Binondo, Manila. The company already has one in Ortigas.

The Richmonde Hotel in Eastwood will have 150 to 175 rooms and is expected to open next year while plans for the Manila-based Richmonde have yet to be finished. Mr. Sian said the project cost for each room in Richmonde would be around $70,000.

Aside from Richmonde, Megaworld, through unit Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc., will also venture into budget hotels. This will be under the Remington brand, with up to 800 rooms.

"We are already finalizing the design and hope to complete it this year. By end of next year or early 2011, we expect it to be complete," he said.

Megaworld is among the many property companies that have started venturing into "economic"-type hotels to take advantage of high demand. The SM group has already launched its SM Inns while the Gokongweis are expected to open their first Go Hotels next year.

Mr. Sian said Remington would be built along with its other high-end hotels — six-star Maxim and Marriott located near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

"We want to target all segments of the market," Mr. Sian said. Shares in Megaworld closed at P1 per share on Friday, 0.64% lower.

Forming part of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s 8-point Agenda, the transfer of the old Nayong Pilipino park in Pasay City to the Reclamation area is also in fulfillment of the NPF board’s project to set up a world-class cultural theme park and, at the same time, restore the past glory of the old Nayong Pilipino.

The new BNPCHP will emerge alongside and at par with the other globally competitive family leisure areas within the Pagcor Entertainment City, Planas said.

Currently undergoing public bidding procedures are NPF’s electrical, vertical, and landscape phases of construction.

Castelofor miniaturized famous scenic spots in the country, representative villages of various regions and ethnic tribes, museums, sports, and recreation areas, and other entertaining, educational, and interactive parts of the park.

The design for the new BNPCHP adopted by the board of trustees of Nayong Pilipino Foundation was based on an original masterplan and concept of Architect Jason Buensalido who won the design competition in 2002.

I wish I could see the winning design of the BNPCHP by Jason Buensalido

here's an article dated 2002

http://www.travelsmart.net/article/104860/

the BNPCHP should have its own ampitheater to showcase cultural shows and other Philippine stuffs, and also state-of-the-art attraction wooven with latest 3D technology.

The Siam Niramit cultural show in Thailand is one of a kind and features dancers harnessed in wires along with huge props as background, it's unlike any cultural shows I've seen. The Ngong Ping 360 in Hong Kong features 'Walking with Buddha' with state-of-the-art attraction

if the BNPCHP wants to be at par with other cultural parks in Asia, equipments should be top of the line, attractions should be Disneyland-like

I am afraid that the BNPCHP would be the same park as seen in the old and outdated Nayong Pilipino

Wondering why the layout is so introverted with all the lakes and other attraction being inside the surrounding structures and buildings? Integrated casino resorts, such as the Bellagio and New York in Las Vegas, have their attractions plainly visible from the boulevard and situated at the front perimeter of the site (or around it). It's an advertisement to attract people into their casinos and hotels. Just from a brief look at the plan, the approach from the boulevard into the complex is a very boring walk through some grass and landscaped paths with some boxy buildings here and there. Why not put the Banaue Rice Terraces (I'm guessing) at the front as the street side attraction instead of being put all the way in the back?

There are also too many different design languages going on in the different structures. I'll have to see a perspective of it, but just looking from the plan it's not a good design. It's disappointing for sure.

When University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture and Fine Arts students Jason Buensalido, 22, and Karen Cheung, 21, join forces, expect a pleasant surprise. The team-up promises to be a moving force in the world of architecture. Two heads are better than one, all right, but it takes the right combination. Despite their many differences, they are able to meet somewhere in the middle to achieve a common goal. In the process, they emerged as the runaway winner of the recently concluded New Nayong Pilipino Master Development Plan Competition. This significant point in their lives, which only happened last November, has already jumpstarted a very promising career in their chosen profession. Indeed, there is a bright future waiting for Jason and Karen, our new breed of architects.

Let’s start from the very beginning. How did the two of you get involved in a project like the Bagong Nayong Pilipino?

Karen: The contest committee wrote to different universities and colleges around the country. In UST, first there was an internal competition, since there are a lot of architecture students there, to determine the group who would represent the school in the competition. There were three finalists in each school. In the second stage, they chose only one. We didn’t change our design entry though. We just made some improvements. Through it all, we kept the basic concept, although there were additional features.

Jason: The concept we used was “Storytelling our land.” We based the design on how our grandparents tell us stories. Usually there are morals, traditions, and values hidden in those stories. What they do for their stories to make an impact, they make it entertaining. So what we did, we used interactive experiences as the vessel to tell the story of the Philippines. What we noticed is that our generation look for some action.

How long did it take you to come up with the design?

Karen: First phase took us around three months. Then we had to change the presentation and make some adjustments, so we needed two months more. We finished it in five months.

What did it take to make it to the finals?

Jason: Each group from different schools consisted of seven members. Those from UST consisted of only three or less. In our case, there were just the two of us. There were 10 groups who made it to the finals, two from UST. But we were lucky a lot of our classmates helped us. They were very supportive.

Describe the collaboration between the two of you. What made the work a lot easier?

Jason: We have already worked with each other before. Every year, there’s a competition in UST. The chemistry is OK. We don’t force each other’s ideas. We try to meet halfway.

Karen: S’ya, di natutulog. He doesn’t sleep. (Laughs)

Jason: We are used to it. Sometimes we need to sacrifice sleep to beat the deadlines. We were working in her house. I would sleep over there almost every night. Sometimes we’d go for two or three days without sleeping. As for social life, we started to have none back in junior college, but it’s all worth it. Now that we’re working, we can have a social life again.

Describe the fulfillment you get out of this project.

Karen: When I see the construction done, then I will be fulfilled.

Jason: Winning in the competition is already a fulfilling experience. But, of course, what I’ve learned from a lot of people is “Never rest on your laurels.”

What was the inspiration behind the design?

Karen: We were looking at so many books about the Philippines.

Jason: We did a lot of research about our culture. One of the purposes of designing the park is to reintroduce the Filipino culture. Many of us, especially the youth of today, don’t know much about the Filipino culture.

http://dynamic2.philonline.com/april2003_goodLife/g042903_b.gif

How did you make your design more interactive then?

Jason: Every module is different. We divided the park into six major regions. They are Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, Activity Center, Cultural Center, and, most important, Orientation Region. Basically, what goes on in the Orientation Region is that it orients the visitors about the Philippines in general and what they can experience inside the park. What we observed in the old Nayong Pilipino, for instance the (miniature) Mayon Volcano, is it was right in front of you, but you don’t know anything about it. Since nobody is telling you about it, you don’t know the significance of Mayon Volcano. Now, in the Orientation Region, you get to know everything about the park and what to expect inside. So, you already have the overview, the significance of every part.

What about the Cultural Center?

Karen: People who will enter the park should be the one to make it lively. Costumes are provided which they can wear before entering the park. The Cultural Center is where you can find the House of Costumes, the Caroza Museum, and the Sculpture Park, where you can find replicas of famous sculptures. At the House of Costumes, you get to pick, say bahag (loincloth). That should make the visit lively. But there are people who don’t want to wear any. We don’t pressure anyone. It’s not a requirement.

Jason: In the Orientation Region, there’s what we call the mobile bahay kubo. You go to an entry plaza where you ride in the mobile bahay kubo (bahay kubo on wheels). From one station, it takes you to the next. While riding it, there will be a video presentation. It can accommodate up to 50 persons. We actually based the idea on the bayanihan.

Karen: The other regions are the subdivisions of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. In Luzon, there are different smaller modules of Vigan, Mayon Volcano, Batanes, Hundred Islands, and Banaue Rice Terraces. Everything will be new.

Jason: Batanes is one of the interactive features to be made particularly for children. There’s an area there where they can make their own Batanes houses. In the process, they learn about the Batanes houses and, at the same time, have fun. It’s a more effective way of learning.

Karen: In the Hundred Islands, you push a button and an information sign pops up. While you hop from one island to another, you step on a smaller island to see the sign.

In a nutshell, how would you distinguish the new Nayong Pilipino from the old?

Karen and Jason: It’s more interactive. It’s a walkable park.

How big is the new site?

Karen: It’s 15 hectares but bisected by row.

Jason: The old Nayong Pilipino is 46 hectares. But minus the 10 hectares taken by Naia, it was reduced to only 36 hectares. But in its new location, it’s much smaller. There’s an advantage though. For one, it will be easier to walk. No need to take a jeepney ride. It will be like a [typical] park. We will try to put everything but in a smaller scale.

Do you think Nayong Pilipino will do better in its new location along Diosdado Macapagal Avenue in Pasay?

Jason: I think in terms of accessibility, yes, definitely. First of all, it’s near Roxas Boulevard. SM (Mall of Asia) is going to be there so [it is expected] there will be a lot of people. Since the site of the new Nayong Pilipino is beside the Pagcor City, the President doesn’t want the place to be called the “Gambling Capital (or Center) of the Philippines,” but instead “The New Nayong Pilipino.” The park will be named Bagong Nayong Pilipino, which will be the first development there.

Karen: As for the entrance fee, we have no idea yet. Charito Planas (director of Nayong Pilipino Foundation who also spearheaded the competition) is trying to lower the fee, upon the approval of the board of directors (with Dr. Evelyn Kilayko as chairman).

What is it like working with professionals?

Jason: Actually, we are very lucky. In many cases, as soon as the designers hand in their design, they go, but the people in charge of the competition are involving us all the way.

Karen: We haven’t begun re-planning for the new site. They just ask us to attend meetings to know what’s going on. We talk to the other architects and know each other.

When do you expect to finish everything?

Karen: The board wants it by December. But now, it’s kind of impossible. But we are targeting April next year, before the elections.

Jason: The board just had a meeting and the groundbreaking will be next month, in May.

What’s your next step?

Jason: I don’t know. I’m taking it by the day. Some people are telling me to go find a job abroad. But I want to stay with Nayong Pilipino. First, it’s a big and significant project. Second, it is a sort of our contribution to the Philippines. Third, it’s an honor for us to be able to do that because those who previously designed Nayong Pilipino are very big names, like Bobby Mañosa.

Karen: Nothing in particular. Maybe one day have a firm. But my interest will probably be in houses. I want to design a whole house. I believe each house should have its uniqueness. Usually in a subdivision, the houses don’t look Filipino at all, just copied from something else. It’s like they have no personality.

Jason: I think I want to go for urban planning. I like the idea of architects making a way of life for people.

What do young architects like you consider most important in design?

Karen: Always put in mind that it’s for the Filipino people, for heritage.

Jason: Basically, architecture is for uplifting the human spirit. That’s according to a book. Architects should always keep in mind that they are doing something for the users. They have to know exactly what the users want or what the users need. They should be able to combine beauty with functionality.

What did you receive from UST as a reward for winning the competition?

Karen: We were given the Benavides award for winning in a national or international competition for the school. We’ve got a medal and a certificate.

Jason: Of course, greater expectation.

MANILA, Philippines - Despite fears of recession in many parts of the globe, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. chairman and CEO Efraim C. Genuino expressed optimism yesterday that the approved concepts for the Bagong Nayong Pilipino-Entertainment City Manila will propel the country to strengthen its economic potential and reverse the effects of the economic downturn.

Genuino said the concept of an integrated resort that will cater to the needs of different tourists from all over the world has earned the confidence of both local and foreign investors to bank on the Entertainment City Manila project. The PAGCOR chief is confident that this project is guaranteed to be a success given that the Philippines is strategically positioned within a four-hour radius of some of the wealthiest nations in the world.

“Long before Singapore even thought of integrated resorts, the Philippines was the first to envision an entertainment and leisure complex across Manila Bay,” Genuino said.

Set to rise on 120 hectares of prime reclaimed land along the Manila Bay area, the estimated $15-billion dollar entertainment and leisure complex will feature a complete range of world-class amenities for people of all ages.

Three of the project’s major investors, the Aruze Corp. of Japan, a leading gaming machine maker; Philippine mall giant SM Investments Corp.; and the Genting Berhad Group of Malaysia – together with subsidiary, Star Cruises and partner local property giant Alliance Global had their proposals approved by PAGCOR.

The Aruze Corp. is set to invest some $2.5 billion to build a 2,000-room, 300 suite casino hotel room, upscale retail opportunities, restaurants, a theater, world-class aquarium, and an equivalent of the famous giant London Eye Ferris Wheel to be dubbed the “Manila Eye.”

The Genting Berhad Group and its subsidiary Star Cruises plan to build several hotels with a minimum capacity of 2,000 rooms, a world-class theme park and a museum, plus a tower that will be among the tallest in the world.

Meanwhile, SM Investments Corp., headed by Teresita Sy-Coson proposes to erect a major luxury hotel with world-class gaming amenities to be built at their Mall of Asia Complex, which joins part of the Entertainment City.

These giant corporations, according to Genuino have initially deposited at least $1 million to jumpstart the first phase of construction of the Entertainment City this year.

“This will be the country’s biggest tourism development project ever, the biggest job-generating project of the government, and the biggest dollar investment of the country,” Genuino said.

“We are all set to make this dream a reality because we know that the Philippines has so much potential to spring into a world-class destination,” he added.

Aside from billions of dollars worth of revenues for the government in terms of direct foreign investments, lease payments, taxes and tourism receipts, the project is expected to pump-prime locally-based industries, particularly construction, information technology, F&B, hospitality, entertainment, transportation and others.

The project also hopes to generate at least 450,000 jobs for local workers. On top of this, Genuino is pushing the proposal of having salaries paid out in US dollars so that Filipinos can earn competitively without leaving their families behind.

now, if, as some press release posted weeks ago said that SM will be starting the construction, then the first signs of activity for the Entertainment City will be on the Mall of Asia Complex... :)

anyway, it looks like Genting and Megaworld is dead serious about this project.

“Las Vegas Sands Corporation is excited and ready to join Singapore on a historic journey. As a catalyst for the economic future of Singapore and a launch pad for its tourism industry, Marina Bay Sands™ will help Singapore solidify its standing among the world’s greatest destinations.” – Sheldon G. Adelson, Chairman and CEO, Las Vegas Sands Corp

http://www.marinabaysands.com/thevision.html

that's Pagcor's chief Genuino's statement, Pagcor city will serve as catalyst for econmic growth, I always hear Genuino say that 'catalyst' line whenever he's being interviewed...and now the CEO of Las Vegas Sands has borrowed that 'catalyst' line :bash:

while the folks here in the philippines continue debate numerous blabberings, other countries quietly gets the job one right away wala ng daldalan pa gawa agad, sa pilipinas aabutin tayo ng siyam-siyam bago kumilos :ohno:

antediluvianist
July 20th, 2009, 01:51 AM
No, that "catalyst" idea is really old, has been used by many people in other countries in other contexts years before Genuino.

The squatters will not go away because we as a people keep pumping out far more children than we can decently support. Population increases faster than the resources. There will be 210 million Filipinos by 2030. There won't even be enough water for people in Manila. Who wants to come to an overcrowded, filthy place? Politicians don't have the balls to oppose the RC Church.

Hello peepz! Last Friday night I saw Business & Leisure on cable TV and they were featuring the GEM (Games Entertainment Manila) event. They showed a lengthy open forum on this project with a certain Gamboa (PhilStar columnist) the moderator throwing questions to panelists made up of investors of this project. They also showed computer generated 3D graphics.

That was the first time I heard of the project and my jaw really dropped -- I couldn't believe we have that here. So I looked up on this and I'm glad to find out we have here in SSC. All the panelists assured this is a go and are bullish on the project.
