Downtown Binghamton is located at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers. Downtown is bounded by the Susquehanna River to the south, the Chenango River to the west, and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks to the north. Downtown Binghamton is also referred to as "Center City", like other downtowns in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Downtown Binghamton prospered when the Chenango Canal opened in 1837. The canal was closed in 1878 and was filled in and became State Street. Later, Downtown grew as the cigar and railroad industries boomed in the city. The defense industry provided stable growth even through tough times in most of the 20th century, until the Cold War ended and the need for defense was not as great. The city continues to be a regional financial center.

Binghamton's looking good, never knew downtown had so much architecture, albeit a little bit of lower scale than its brother north on I-81, Syracuse. That Sherman Phelps mansion looks nice!
