Are there any other cities in the world with a similar layout to Adelaide? The CDB/Downtown of Adelaide is completely ringed by parklands, it provides a nice buffer between the city and the suburbs.

Madrid has the Casa de Campo at southwest, that is a historic public park with 1.700 hectares and Monte del Pardo at northwest, that is a typical spanish forest of 16.000 hectares. In fact el monte del Pardo is the 24% of all Madrid's township.

The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about a city surrounded by green is Manaus, Brazil (although it's surrounded by rainforest rather than man-made greeneries).

London Green Belt

But that is outside the Metro area is it not? As you can see from the Adelaide pic, the parklands are a buffer between the city and the metro area.

^^no the green belt surrounds the urban area of London and has prevented London swallowing near by towns up. Part of the green belt is within the greater london boundary.

At the past it was really different...until 1808 it was devastated to became farms to plant coffee...but by the order of the the king D.Joao I, they made one of the first reflorestation that we have notice.....

The Sonian Forest (Dutch: Zoniënwoud, French: Forêt de Soignes) is a 4,421-hectare (10,920-acre) forest that lies across the south-eastern part of Brussels, Belgium.

The Bois de la Cambre (456 acres) on the outskirts of Brussels was formed out of the forest.

Today the forest consists mainly of European beeches and oaks. Several trees are more than 200 years old. The forest served for a long period as an exclusive hunting ground for the nobility, but today is open to the general public.

The forest contains a somewhat reduced fauna and flora. Due to human influence and impoverishment of the ecosystem various plants and animals have become extinct. The forest was home to 46 different mammal species. The many species of bat in the forest led to it being classified as a Natura 2000 protected site.

Adelaide, Australia - Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland.

Adelaide is fascinating! - I'd echo earlier comments by saying that a second green ring should have been established further out to limit sprawl and encourage more high density urbanity.

Here's a very very dry graphic showing 'greenbelts' where development is limited, around UK cities:
