Is the building from the ground up 130m? or is that just the building and then we add the podium height to it, because it looks way taller than 130.

This one kicks ass over Rialto. A simple design where all sides are the same. Very striking.

Looks like the core now surrounded by a white box at the top of the construction has virtually reached its full height. The equivalent to approx. 2 levels for the crown will add slightly more height for Civic to reach its full height of 132m above ground.

BTW I have a feeling that colourbond type sheeting beginning to cover the diagonal transfer structure is acting as a mold for the ribbed radial concrete.

Pic by CULWULLA of sheeting:

Muse,

When the colourbond first appeared I made the observation that I hoped that wouldn't be the finished product - it'll be a real "garage door" look.

The challenges of pumping concrete into moulds at that angle will be tricky - and perhaps it would have been easier to have precast the panels and then assemble them onsite.

We will just have to wait and see.

That pic reinforces what I posted yesterday about it becoming increasingly dominant from the south. If the TNT Tower's were a block or two to the east, it would of appeared even better.

It's domiance over the southern CBD skyline increases as you head further out. It stands out at bit better from St Peters, and from Monterey, it's even a bit more dominant.

I don't know why but this tower is really impressive from street level. I think it may be due to the overhang which makes it seem to make it feel like it's right over the road. It's looking big from Central station too (platform 22).

Also got a question. Are there many towers in Sydney that are identical from any angle? I wouldn't think there to be that many... A question for the experts! :colgate:

alot of the 'box scrapers" from the 70;s look identical from all angles. eg- AMP Centre, hyde park square- these are of course slightly off square, so not 100% identical but close.NAB House is octagonal with equal sides.

As I've posted a couple of times, we now have a new and improved (sounds like a washing detergent commercial) Civic Tower. Wider and taller and set for the new millennium.

If we had Civic Tower built 30 years ago with late 60s, early 70s technology and materials, it would be more than likely a sad and redundant building riddled with concrete cancer. This might be unfair as the Masonic Centre is quite a solid structure in itself.

BTW nice pic Fabian and lol @ "cheeseburger" c_c.

I'm really impressed with the polished concrete finish - which is really white without having to resort of a painted finish.

It's sssooo much better than the way Meriton have to paint their buldings white.

The top bit is taking a bit long, probably due to a totally dif pour config due to no more window openings , just sheer wall for top 6m.

The pics of Masonic are brilliant, especially the top.
My question relates to the core which sticks up from the concrete rim. How will the tower be finished at the roof line? Are we to expect the tip of the core to jut out like it is?

yeah pretty much. The core/LMR is located in centre and will stick out 2m higher than roof line.the corebox is yet to be removed, once this is then you will see polished LMR .

So to my understanding, if the core is 2m higher than the crown's roofline, the crown is @ 130m.Civic looks so great!!! Lovin' the completed top! They back-peddled once the tower started taking shape!

I look forward to some public down-on-your-knees apologies :master: (you know who you are) ;)

Nice vista shot Cul!!!! A resemebles a mini version of the WTC Towers in New York.

Also, Did anyone see the report on illegal immigrant workers on ACA last night? Apparently a number of illegal immigrant workers been working on this development for contractors and sub contractors, being paid very little for their work. The report even showed a member of the CFMEU searching for these workers on the site asking for visas and other personal documents. They even did an interview with the CFMEU guy on the roof of the tower and they showed some nice views of World Square and Latitude and also there were scenes of people working inside the tower.

***The project manager told me last year that the aim for Civic Tower was to top-out by June. It's certainly well ahead of construction schedule :okay: The support structure (hopefully I got it right) is now being cladded as well. It's "diagonal transfer structure" and "clad" not "cladded" if you please :nono:

More importantly, excellent pic posts Fabian.

I still feel that they are moulds and not cladding because if you look at any renders (as below), it sure looks like concrete. Also they aren't completely joining to the base of the main tower. Time will tell.

well this is a unique touch to the civic tower design. a section96 has come in and its for a 4m tall air vent which will be located at street level close to cnr of Goulburn and Castlereagh sts.The circular concrete shaft will be 1.6m dia. you should see the model of it at 1;500!!lol its 8mm tall.
so now you know what will be being built near cnr.

The Art of Crane....

It's amazingly quick in coming down. Considering the different sections that have to be taken into consideration and the unclamping from the side. Safety considerations to be taken into account too.

I'm really disappointed with the metallic colorbond cover. I wanted to believe it was a mold there for a while. But seems to be the end product :(

I just found what appears to be an original model of Civic Tower. The glass that wraps around the podium does not appear. This has been used as part of marketing of the tower, which is being marketed by Laing & Simmons & FPDSavills

Rental per psm ranges from $ 435 to $ 495 per annum.

I have to ask, why does the building sit to one side of the podium, like it's about to tip over? Why didn't they make complete use of the entire podium, thereby making the building much wider?

it was designed to be setback from Castlereagh Street plus the office tower entrance is on Goulburn st were tower is located. When you design a tower for a specific site, you can only go on the available amount of floor space allowed for that site. It all has to do with (floor space ratio). So the podium is irrelevant as for tower size. the tower was made slim to achieve its 132m height. Its floor plate couldnt go any thinner, so that was its max height. If ot was a larger tower it would only get less then 100m in height.

Also, if they made complete use of the podium by putting the tower in the middle, it would have been sitting above the open space below of the auditorium, requiring unusual lift core arrangements, as well as complex structural systems to support it over the open space - thus increasing cost and reducing the viability of the project.

We actually did get a tower with larger floorplates this time around than the original Joseland Gilling design, which wouldn't have had the same impact as the updated PTW design.

My only wish is that it would have helped cover up the southern side of Museum Towers, which it does to an extent, esp. from Gouburn...just not from Castlereagh (which ironically would have been achieved in exactly what Vitriol makes reference to, just not feasible).

Yeah - I spose if you look at the original model pic posted by Fab, you can see that the original designers never would have suspected that the adjacent heritage building would fall victim to the el averago Meriton creation that is Museum Towers.

I personally feel that it was Meriton's duty not to subject us to that kind of vast brick visual offense, but what's done is done I suppose? :dunno:

Would the original designers of Civic Tower had changed its orientation if they had known an extremely average Meriton "creation" was on its way as an immediate neighbour in over a decade away. We'll indeed never know :dunno:

Windows still need to be added to a small part of the podium on the Castlereagh Street side. This shot was taken on Thursday morning.

So the hoardings are slowly coming down. Gone are the groovy flared jeans and the Yves Saint Laurent sunglasses.

The workers' lift to the top of the podium also gone.

This will free up construction workers to move to new sites. Yippo!

Civic Cafe for lattes anyone?

Muse

Orange shit is still on there.

Wow, I walked by yesterday and it lookin' really, really nice; spiffy!! (Alas, I'll always think about meatal being used instead of molded concrete).

So, so glad they waited 30 years....it would have been an ugly little gronky sad little box falling apart at the seams.

I wonder if we'll even notice it in 30 years time?? I'd like to think that construction standards have improved to the point where a tower will be still in tip-top condition 30 years after construction...

Muse

Which it will be in 30 years from now.Oh Vitriol, I do wish you would see the glass half full rather than half empty more often. Vitriol = Avatar No. 2 negative nelly :|

If it had been built 30 years earlier, it would possibly be experiencing a cheap makeover a'la 233 Castlereagh Street. Instead we have a great spanking new much more solid tower.

fro's last reply is more so on the right track. Take heed Vitriol.

Other than a few little paint jobs and some fitouts to do, it's all over after 18 months. This was to be the first tower I followed from start to finish too following everything from the appearance of the crane, the formation of the supports for the tower (which seemed to take forever) and on true Grocon style, the rise of the floorplates.

The final product came out much better than I thought. It's gone from being the worst building in town into one of the more prominent towers in town which it truely deserves. The idea to paint it white was excellent, adding a modern touch to it. Wihout it i'd appear more like it came out of the 70's. The podium deserves high praise for it's wall of glass improving the appeal of the original Masonic Centre at street level and improving the streetscape significantly.

This week I'm going to check out the podium in the office complex, which is spread over two levels and even sneak in a pic or two (my camera can be nasty when it comes to taking piccies indoors) and is connected to the existing Masonic Centre.

This one kicks ass over Rialto. A simple design where all sides are the same. Very striking.
