This is so embarassing, I love skyscrapers. But only real tall one I have seen isn't even really a skyscraper: the Eiffel Tower. And my grandmam is planning on moving to Benidorm at least for the winter. Benidorm is far from being a nice place

Affortunately, architecture, city planners, and economics critics think otherwise. And economic and touristic figures show it, that explains how a 200m residential tower can start construction in a little city of 70.000 inhabitants in the middle of the worst national and world crisis in the last 50 years, when cities like London, Paris or Berlin can't do that even in times of bonanza.

By the way, I didn't talk about this building, I don't think it's sooo bad as many people say, and I really think it's gonna look better than in the renders, but it's bad anyway, I can imagine one thousand ways to improve that design with little variations that could even make the building cheaper to build.

Guys! Many towers do not look so great just b/c they don't fit the surrounding! I don't know if this is b/c some designs are reused but meant for another place or stupid architects make their projects without analysing the place were it will be realized.

Architect should not allow to use his/her design ANYwhere and investor should not be allowed by the city architect to destroy the urban cohesion :ohno:

Yes, although there are taller proposals in other cities (a 250m tower on Benidorm). But of course, those proposals are impossible to build as long as Spain remains in depression.

Indeed it is a shame re the current economic situation, but two years ago Spain had no towers over 200m and soon there will be five! So great for Spain.

I think these towering isolated twins are an exxagerate but interesting project; in such a devastated area they cannot make any more harm; but I radically propose to eradicate almost all old buildings there in Benidorm and restart from scratch with these two Niemeyer's style simbolic twins.

thank you Victhor, hope it works; I also noted the renderings are of particularly high level, proportionally inverse to the project! the video is only a trick. another thing, it seems to me the new buildings are too much high: if you measure i.e. 8 levels in the projects, they are well higher than 8 levels in old buildings in front of the seashore

Unfortunately due to the depressionary situation of the Spanish economy and real-state, one of the subcontractors has gone bankrupt and construction is on hold since early October. It will be resumed once a new subcontractor is found.

source in spanish: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/9326/intempo.jpg

Victhor
October 20th, 2009, 10:21 PM
It is the subcontractor that is working on the structure, that's why we don't see much advance in the last weeks, but I hope the main contractor finds a new company for the structure soon. But even without the structure subcontractor they raised one of the tower cranes recently, and as they use to have a lots of contacts, I think the construction will resume soon, maybe 2 weeks, or less than a month for sure. And they can make other works in the 11 floors already finished, like the installations (electricity, water suply, ventilation tubes, conducts, walls, etc.)
PD: According to JUANANBENIDORM, today they have been working on the construction

Looks tacky, something out of 90s' Jakarta, so for Benidorm it fits right in :P

I don't like that glass color, but just to deffend the architect's work, as an architecture student, I have to say that right now in Spain, architecture experts blame that kind of renders showing blue glass or blue skies, it's also very unpopular to cover the construction materials with better looking facade materials that doesn't have any other use than making the building look better, good architecture is suposed to be sincere, cheap, without ornaments (painting the concrete is lame), ecological (glazed buildings are the worst choice), respectfull with the evolution of local architecture, etc. and from that point of view, Benidorm's architecture is becoming really admired among architecture experts in recent architecture books even admiting it doesn't look nice and sometimes it's tacky, but, as Benidorm is traditionally tacky, so that's coherent.
According to these critics, Santiago Calatrava is an anti-architect, Madrid's Cuatro Torres is crappy architecture, only one of the 4 towers (the black one) has good critics, and the architecture of Dubai is the worst in the world.

I don't know much about current architecture education in Spain, but i am teaching design for architect students at the budapest technical university, and here this would still be concidered poor design. it follows (or at least seems to follow) principles from the 70's-80's that once already failed.

I'm just going to go out and say that I love it. It's one of those rare buildings that is truly so bad that it is fascinating more than anything else. And it's well underway so 'tis better to embrace it for what it is. This is Spain, after all, where architectural abominations are extraordinarily rare and the reality of this building is less representative of a trend or any other popular denial of architecture, rather it seems to just be an anomaly. Sure, that cone is straight out of some second-tier Dubai development of yore and the gold glass is . . . well, it's gold. But oh well!

This process will take place at 147 metres over the ground, the steel structure is 20 metres long and weights 120 tons.

From a regional newspaper:
http://www.diarioinformacion.com/benidorm/2011/07/19/intempo-inicia-union-torres-147-metros-altura/1150224.html

Benidorm is not any less beautiful/ugly than Balneário Camboriú (a Brazilian city):
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=559768
While Benidorm is hated (even by the Spanish), Balneário Camboriú
is adored by most people. Go figure!

At least, the sea is clearer (more transparent) in Benidorm, and on the beach, the Sun does not set at 2:00 pm because of the shadows cast by skyscrapers.
In Camboriú the waters are dirty and murky, and the beach is in the shadow at 2:00 pm.

Yes, maybe Benidorm is not the most beautiful European city (the southern halve looks a little like some messed parts of São Paulo, Brazil; the northern part looks slightly better) and the tower looks somehow trashy/kitschy (a hotel in Las Vegas?), but its reception can change. They need just to build another tower, preferably glossy cherry, and another one orange/purple/blue close to this one. I'm not kidding, it will look much better in a cluster with the same style but another colour (the adjoining towers can be shorter, but should be a little more bulky).

It sure as hell is not the best looking building, but it also is not that bad as people say either. It will iconic for Benidorm, and the height is impressive. With a little bit more luck it could just turn out to be stunning (like that orange tower in Moscow that seems to turn out just fine)

They are in the back/north facade (see the pics below), but there are only 3 elevators (and 2 stairs) per tower, it seems they are very few, but I guess the architect has calculated that well.

Thus, I strongly suggest you to travel to Rio and then to Benidorm before making these kind of useless comments. The layout of those apartments seem a little strange; the kitchen is seperate to the dining room which is mashed in with a sitting room suggesting that when you want to serve a meal you need to go through two doors with only one hand free. I feel a better idea would be to edit the hallway seperating the two daytime rooms out of the two apartments on the side of the tower to create one long room broken up by different 'zones', surely this would feel more spacious? To me this project isn't great; It is ugly on the outside as well as being badly planned (to me) on the inside. :ohno:

In Spain, houses have all rooms separated. Even in my house you have to go through two doors to go to the kitchen to the dining room, and there's no problem!

This system has good things, like your dining room will never smell like a kitchen.
