Kokoity February 10th, 2010, 05:57 PM Georgia to Build Black Sea Oil Port to Boost Caspian Flows
FEBRUARY 09, 2010
By Helena Bedwell
Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Georgia plans to build another Black Sea port to boost transit fees from cargo shipments such as crude oil from the Caspian Sea region.
The Supsa port will cost “half a billion dollars” and take less than two years to build once the government gives the final okay, said Shalva Tsakadze, head of Black Sea Product Ltd., the developer of the project.
“A group of European investors are flying to Tbilisi tomorrow to finalize the agreement,” Tsakadze said in an interview in the capital Tbilisi today, declining to elaborate until the accord is signed.
President Mikheil Saakashvili granted Black Sea Product the rights to the land where the port will be built and the government has 60 days from Jan. 22, the date the project was officially submitted, to approve the deal, according to the Economic Development Ministry.
“This is a serious project,” Economic Development Minister Zurab Pololikashvili said by phone today. “It is being widely discussed at the highest levels of government.”
Tsakadze said Supsa is “the best natural deep place” on the Black Sea for oil tankers to dock. The port will be able to load as much as 40 million metric tons of oil and cargo a year once the 204-hectare facility is completed, he said.
BP, Baku
The government earns transit fees from two BP Plc-led pipelines that carry Azeri crude to world markets. One is the Baku-Supsa link to the Black Sea and the other is the Baku- Tbilisi-Ceyhan route to Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Black Sea Product may also work with Georgia’s government to build a plant to supercool natural gas into liquefied form so it can be shipped by tanker to Europe, Tsakadze said. The plant would process as much as 30 billion cubic meters of gas from phase two of Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field, which is operated by London-based BP and marketed by Norway’s Statoil ASA.
Up the coast from Supsa is Poti, the port owned by the Gulf emirate of Ras al-Khaimah. Rakeen, the development company owned by the emirate, bought the half of Poti it didn’t already own in December for $65 million, after the government made the area the country’s first so-called special economic zone to lure foreign investment.

I'm really impressed with Batumi :) Thanks all of you, who uploaded these pictures.
Is there any "strategic" plan for development of the city? I mean in the long-run what will be the main "functions" of the city and accordingly what sort of constructions we should expect? (e.g. industrial, tourism, ports, cultural, etc.)
Thanks

Kokoity February 24th, 2010, 02:05 PM Construction of Touring Infrastructure is starting in Mestia
The Minister of Economic Development together with Belgian investors and specialist of the Austrian engeneering company visited Mestia where the costruction of new skiing infrastructure will start in 2010. Zurab Pololikashvili together with Zaza Gorozia and representatives of the local government introduced the new development project to the locals. Zurab Pololikashvili said that “Australian Alpine Competence” company is already working on planning the development conception of Mestia and that is very important for potential investors.
"The Austrian company has already executed more than eighteen similar projects in Europe, they will plan skiing routes and rope-railways. We have also brought Swiss-Belgian bussiness group who liked Svaneti very much and intend to invest in this region. This means that about thousand local inhabitants will be employed, new touring directions will be created, touring infrastructure will be built and renewed, cultural-entertaining centers will aslo be built that will make Svaneti one of the best resorts not only in Georgia. I know that Svaneti is pretty much loaded during summer too and the development of the infrastructure will allow to receive touring groups throughout the whole year” – said the Minister.
It was revealed on the presentation that the first skiing route will already be open in 2010, development of glacier skiing routes is planned by the next year. The first rope-railway connected to the glacier will be constructed this year. Despite the construction of the skiing infrastructure, the administrative center of Mestia, several big hotels, an airport, cultural-entertaining center, a museum, ice house for skating will be constructed; roads will be built, water infrastructure will be regulated and motels will be reconstructed. Complete rehabilitation of Senaki-Mestia road will also start in 2010; the government has already foresee tens of millions of Lari for this project.
"Mestia has a wonderful location and interesting perspectives for development. There are several problems e.g. roads and lack of proper infrastructure but we hope that we shall overcome this problems with the help of the government. We shall start measurement and other technical works because the weather doesn’t support us too much." – says the representative of Austrian Engeneering Company.
Active works to attract investment are held in accordance with the special order fiven by the President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. The president introduced the idea of developing Mestia to the sociaty in January 2010 on the presentation of touring zones and gave the representatives of the government special orders. "Mestia has features that only some countries in Europe have – that is summer skiing routes – the Ushba plateau that meets the Olympic requirements." - said the President and said that Georgia will have about ten high level skiing resorts in 5-6 years

Plans to make Mestia a rival of Gudauri and Bakuriani start
After visiting Georgia’s high mountainous Mestia region, representatives of an Austrian engineering company expressed interest to invest heavily in the region’s tourism development.
“There are several problems, for instance, the roads and the lack of proper infrastructure, but we hope that we will overcome these problems with the help of the government,” a representative of Alpine, Austria’s second largest construction company, said. “Mestia has a wonderful location and impressive prospects for the development. If Mestia added an airport with even a small 3km runway, we would start investing big money.”
Last week, the Economy Ministry invited Belgian and Austrian businessmen to tour around Mestia and Anaklia, a Black Sea coastal area in the Samegrelo region. After the trip to Mestia the Minister of Economy Zurab Pololikashvili said that an Austrian partner company has already agreed to start planning a development concept for Mestia in order to transform it into a year-round tourist destination.
“The Austrian company has already carried out more than 18 similar projects in Europe, they will plan skiing routes and lifts,” Pololokashvili said. “We have also brought in a Swiss-Belgian business group which took an interest in investing in the Svaneti development project. This means that thousands of locals will get jobs. Svaneti will become one of the best resorts to host holidaymakers and travelers.”
Surrounded by 3,000–5,000 meter peaks, Mestia lies at an altitude of 1,500 meters. The town is dominated by stone defensive towers dating back to 12th century. A number of Mestia’s medieval monuments, mainly churches and forts, are included in a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while ancient icons and manuscripts are kept in Mestia Historical-Ethnographic Museum.
Aiming to transform Mestia into a “tourist miracle,” President Mikheil Saakashvili unveiled the transformation project in January 2010. According to Saakashvili, Mestia and its neighboring Black Sea city Anaklia would become tourist landmarks of 21st-century Georgia, bringing significant income for the state budget and reviving the commercial life of the nearly deserted region.
Saakashvili predicted that as a result of this initiative, at least 10,000 jobs would be created in Mestia alone during the next three years, as the number of employable people is currently undersized.
“Svaneti is the poorest region presently, but in five years the wealthiest people will be living there,” he said.
The Mestia project is estimated at $100 million and the government said it is worth it.
“If 5 million tourists visit Georgia a year and each spends $1,000, the budget will receive $5 billion in earnings annually. This is an additional investment for the Georgian economy,” Saakashvili said as he spoke about the project with great enthusiasm to cabinet members and representatives of local tour operators.
If the Mestia project becomes a reality, it will compete with Gudauri and Bakuriani, two popular winter resorts among local skiers.
To highlight Mestia’s prospect of becoming a competitive ski resort, Saakashvili said that Svaneti has much less precipitation throughout the year than the already established ski resorts of Bakuriani and Gudauri.
“The dry climate’s coefficient in Mestia is 55, while in Gudauri and Bakuriani it is 77 and 74, respectively. This is very important for holiday travelers because it would give them more time to ski, because … it is impossible to ski in snow,” he said.
Plans for the project include studying the ski opportunities of Mount Ushba’s plateau and building ski routes, toboggan runs, lifts and an Olympic-sized open skating rink. Saakashvili said he is confident the project will push forward and he is already making plans to travel to Mestia’s ski resort.
“I will ski in Mestia on New Year’s Eve this year,” Saakashvili said.

Construction of a tourism center is planned on a territory of 300 hectares. Moreover the investors are planning to construct a great resort center in Gonio as well” - said Zurab Alavidze.
The Egyptian investors were attracted by Shaori and especially by Gonio and said that they hope that these resorts will be more attractive for Georgian tourists in the nearest future.
“Georgia has a great potential to become the capital country among the countries of the Black Sea basin. You have a wonderful country; we are fascinated by the natural and climate conditions. We were impressed by the hospitality of the Georgian people. We see the brilliant future of your country. We are happy that we came here. We are ready to share the dream of the Georgian people and become a part of it. Everything will be more beautiful here in the nearest future and these resorts will become more attractive for tourists. There is an environment here that will attract everyone” – said the Egyptian investors.
It is remarkable that the Egyptian Businessmen were invited to Georgia by the Head of the Kutaisi Free Industrial Zone Mikheil Tigishvili. The agreement between the investors and the government will be signed soon and the construction will begin in three months.

We will inaugurate the construction of the biggest airport in the South Caucasus in April 2010, President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili said at the introduction of new tourism resorts in Bakuriani, the Borjomi District, the Samtskhe-Javakheti Region, on January 18.
“The Poti International Airport will be the nearest Georgian airport to Europe and it will serve plenty of visitors”, Saakasvhili said.
Saakashvili also focused on ticket prices and noted that the Poti International Airport would introduce lower tariffs compared to the Tbilisi International Airport.
“The Poti Airport will make the Tbilisi Airport, which is in monopolistic state, lower ticket prices”, Saakashvili said and added that despite multiple consultations, the Government of Georgia could not persuade TAV Urban Georgia to lower tariffs.
The Poti International Airport will be put into exploitation in spring 2012. The construction-rehabilitation of the Anaklia-Mestia resort zone will be completed by spring 2012 and “the country will have a vast tourism zone in combination with the tourism zone of Achara”, the President noted.
At this stage, the Poti airport is owned by the Poti local self-government. At the same time, the draft resolution of the Georgian President calls for handing over a 98.26 percent stake of JSC Poti Airport to LLC Ras al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA). The ultimate decision has not been made yet.

Kokoity March 4th, 2010, 02:37 PM Goderdzi to Challenge Bakuriani, Gudauri Ski Resorts
Goderdzi Pass, in mountainous Adjara, is poised to become another winter resort in Georgia, the Tourism Department of Adjara said last week. HOK, the largest US-based architecture and engineering firm, is in charge of preparing a plan for the resort’s construction. But much work remains to be done.
“High mountains and extensive terrain, reliable snow and powder days are not enough to make it [Goderdzi Pass] a new winter holiday destination,” said Thomas Gould, Senior Associate of the HOK Planning Group. “Goderdzi Pass needs proper infrastructure and strategy to become an international winter resort. The territory has a wonderful location and definitely HOK sees great potential in developing Goderdzi Pass as a year-round destination.”
Gould said that HOK sees Goderdzi as a destination which can attract visitors at all seasons, thus building on the existing popularity of Batumi as a summer destination.
Temur Diasamidze, the Head of the Tourism Department of Adjara, said that one of the advantages of the resort over the already established destinations of Bakuriani and Gudauri is that a blanket of snow covers the Goderdzi Pass slopes for 6-7 months, from October to April, thus making it accessible to skiers all year round. Bakuriani and Gudauri, by comparison, can boast sufficient snow cover only for 4-5 months.
A strategy and master plan for the Goderdzi Pass ski resort is scheduled to be presented in May this year. The project will cost approximately 700,000 GEL. Thomas Gould said that HOK plans to take a holistic approach to devising the master plan, considering environmental, economic and social challenges. HOK also plans to provide expertise in the planning, urban design, architecture and engineering of Goderdzi’s transportation project.
The Goderdzi Pass master plan is HOK’s first project in Georgia. HOK’s official webpage says that since the firm's founding in 1955 it has developed into one of the world's largest, most diverse and respected design practices.
“The HOK Group has participated in some of the world's most complex projects and has years of experience in designing modern skiing resorts worldwide,” Gould said. “Ecosign, from Whistler, Canada will be providing technical ski advice to ensure we will have great winter sports facilities. Our project team has worked on mountain resort projects in Canada, USA, Japan and Kazakhstan, to name just a few.”
Situated 90 kms from Batumi, Goderdzi Pass rests 2,500 metres above sea level and can serve more than 12,000 tourists. The territory is surrounded by pine and mixed forests and is rich in pure streams. Gould said that approximately 250 hectares of skiable terrain exhibits all the necessary characteristics needed to fulfill the requirements of a modern ski station.
“The resort is attractive to three main groups: beginner to mid-experience skiers will find the best opportunities here, and it is ideal for alternative winter sports and heli-skiing too,” Diasamidze said.
HOK’s experience gives Diasamidze hope that this project will attract investors’ attention. “When the master plan of the project is made by such an experienced and world renowned company investors will have more confidence,” he said. “I am sure that investors will show great interest after the master plan is ready. Moreover, the Adjara Tourism Department will expand the search for investors.”
Georgia’s two existing alpine resorts, Bakuriani and Gudauri, together catered for more than 30,000 visitors last season. Gudauri, 120 kms from the capital, emerged as a rival to Bakuriani only in the 90s. The resort offers slalom, giant slalom, speed skiing and heli-skiing for experienced skiers.
The Adjara region, home to Goderdzi, is popular for its Black Sea resorts and has grown rapidly over the past few years. In 2009 more than 554,000 tourists visited it, as compared to approximately 285,000 in 2008 and 147,000 in 2005, according to Georgia’s Department of Statistics. The majority of foreign visitors came from Turkey, Germany, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. Georgia's Black Sea resorts are also rapidly expanding, with the construction of at least 18 new hotels in the next three years. The region already houses 120 hotels.
Marina Metreveli, PhD, expert in tourism issues, with Parliament’s Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee, said she welcomes the initiative of the Government to diversify Georgia’s tourism potential. She said that winter tourism has the greatest potential in Adjara region and Goderdzi Pass is likely to become a favorite ski resort.
“Besides the skiing potential other winter sports and also summer activities are being considered in Goderdzi Pass, which will enable the development of the resort. Several activities for every season will bring surplus revenue for investors,” Metreveli said.

Arrival from Tbilisi to Batumi in three hours will become real soon. French engineers have been working over this project already and Georgian railway will correspond to the European standards.
Daughter Company of SNCF “Systra” won the tender of railway modernization announced by the Georgian Railways. The delegation of Georgian Railways visited France last week to discuss all questions concerning the project.
It is worthy of being mentioned that as a result of modernization French Railways could manage reduction of time and distance of the railway line during 10 years. From the point of view of relief complexities rehabilitation works which took place in the Alpine zone of France are close to the Georgian reality. Probably, this experience will become an initial point for the rehabilitation of a problematic piece of Rikoti gorge.
“Railways in all countries have almost identical problems. At this stage, Georgian railway faces to the same problems which we have overcome several years ago. Therefore, I think, that our experience will be positively represented on rehabilitation of Georgian trunk-railway”, - declared Director of Infrastructure of SNCF Pierre Izardi.
For the Georgian side French project is comprehensible for minimal expenses it is possible to reach the maximal result.
“French side does not try to reach results only with implementation of expensive technologies. They try to receive results within the limits of the optimum decision of updating of existing Infrastructure. Rehabilitation of Georgian Railways has several goals: to provide the maximal safety, growth of traffic capacity and increase of speed, as a result arrival from Tbilisi to Batumi in three hours will be possible”, - declared Director of Infrastructure of “Georgian Railway” LLC Giorgi Gurgenidze.
Giorgi Gurgenidze has also noted, that within the limits of the project, with the help of the French side best engineering, technically, economically and financial proved decisions have been accepted. As a result of realization of the given project, all those factors are improved, which will promote train movement more comfortable.
Engineers of the French company “Systra” will represent their own concept to the Georgian side in the end of April. Details are already coordinated and now there remains only realization of the plans.

It is remarkable that the international association of investors of Adjara was founded in 2009 and already more than 20 foreign companies that execute major investment projects in the region are the members of the organization. They execute investments in the spheres of tourism, agriculture, transport, energy and construction business.
Already executed and future projects, free trade and export, certificates of origin and other topics concerning Adjara region were discussed at the meeting; the problems of the banking sector in the region were also conversed.
“We are ready to promote investments, support them to execute concrete projects and get over problems. Big projects are being executed in Adjara that is important not only for the region but also the development of the whole country. Constant communication between the Capital and the region together with the execution of investment projects is also very important for the development of the country” – said Zurab Pololikashvili.
Zurab Pololikashvili also talked about experimental projects e.g. “Return to Georgia,” which anticipates the participation of Georgian Diaspora in the economic life of the country. The above mention project is being executed collaboratively together with the Ministry of Diaspora.
It was revealed at the meeting that the united investment center will be opened in Batumi in the nearest future with the initiative of the National Investment Agency and the government of the autonomous republic.
After the meeting Zurab Pololikashvili and Levan Varshalomidze visited the construction sights of “Kempinsky,” “Radisson,” and “Hilton” hotels. The construction of 22-storey “Radisson” will be finished in 2010; construction of 15-storey “Kempinsky” will be over in 2013.
Levan Varshalomidze said that the development of construction business is one of the biggest priorities of the country.
“The construction of million square meters for living and 350 thousand square meters for hotels is the proof that construction business is very important and that the interest of tourists is also great” – said Varshalomidze.
The Minister visited Kutaisi after Batumi where he met the governor of Imereti. He also visited the construction of McDonald’s and the building of the Georgian-Indian Metallurgical Company “Hercules” where more than 500 people work.
After visiting the factory the Minister visited the reconstructed historical sights of the city.

(...) I have found out some news today - you know that “Sheraton” will open in Batumi and hundreds of people will be employed there.
I am glad that first 50 people hired there are from the professional training school that was opened by my initiative several years ago.
Here in Batumi the biggest hotel complex “Kempinski” is being built. This complex will employ several thousand people. We have an order from them to prepare these people at Kobuleti training center for them. We as well have an order from “Radisson Hotel”, the construction of which will have been completed by the end of the year. We have an order from “Hilton” that will start functioning next year.
I haven’t seen a small city like Batumi anywhere where so many brands and big complexes are concentrated.
Of course we have to create something extraordinary in Georgia.
Our main task is integrate Georgia’s educational system into world system. This is why it is so important what our Turkish friends are doing here. They came to Georgia when no one came here; they developed several Universities and several best schools here. These schools raise people who will be not only the firm base for Turkish-Georgian friendship. This is great friendship, this is visa-free traveling, investments, transparent boarders, employment of our citizens, perspectives and one of our major windows into Europe.(...)

The Sunken Vessel.. Artificial Islands..Reefs and Pyramids in the Sarpi-Kvariati Waters

Maia Arabidze
The Georgian government has launched a project to revise the statistics of visitors following the recommendations of the World Tourism Organization. The country becomes obliged to develop satellite reports on tourism on the ground of statistical researches, which will be conducted at customs checkpoints year-round to determine what drives foreign tourists to visit the country.
The Institute for Polling and Marketing (IPM) has already conducted the first research in 2010. The research was organized in the Tbilisi International Airport, the state frontier checkpoints of Sadakhlo, Tsiteli Khidi (Red Bridge) and Sarpi. Foreign tourists leaving Georgia were interviewed.
The research has outlined several interesting tendencies, namely: besides citizens of the neighboring countries, a great number of tourists this year reportedly came from Germany, the U.S., Britain and France to the region of Adjara.
The interviewed tourists have outlined unique advantages of Georgia, particularly, human relations, hospitality, climate conditions and Georgian dishes. As to the current problems in the tourism industry, the foreign travelers have stressed low-quality services and trouble with supply pipelines.
The respondents reportedly found Batumi, Mtskheta, Gudauri, Sighnaghi and Bakuriani especially attractive resorts in winter period.
“The research has showed up very interesting tendencies,” said Beka Jakeli, deputy chairman of the tourism department. “The foreign respondents have noted Batumi tends to become an attractive resort on all four seasons, not only in summertime. Foreign tourist, particularly Turkish guests, consider Batumi very attractive in winter too, because besides business trips, they visit Batumi to play in casinos and gambling clubs.”
The inflow of foreign tourists to the winter resorts is also growing. Azerbaijan has emerged as a leader this year in terms of quantity of visitors. Azerbaijni tourists recorded major inflows to Gudauri and Bakuriani this winter. The research says foreign tourists are facing much problems with the level of services and communications. To resolve these problems the Tourism Department has organized trainings for the service sector employees to both upgrade their skills in services and teach foreign languages.
Statistical indicators also prove foreign tourists find Adjara increasingly attractive. The last year recorded the inflow of 550,000 tourists to Adjara, the Adjara Tourism Department reports.
“According to preliminary estimations, more than 900,000 tourists will visit Adjara in 2010, including foreign visitors will mark a 55 percent share,” said Temur Diasamidze, chairman of the Adjara Tourism Department. “The sea season will be officially unveiled in late May 2010. We expect 20 cruise ships to enter the Batumi seaport, which is twice more compared to 2009. Moreover, a number of jazz and rock festivals will be also organized to attract both Georgian and foreign tourists. It should be also noted we have achieved an agreement with owners of restaurants on revision of service prices along with improvement of service quality. Prices are expected to drop 15 percent. Hotel owners may also lower service tariffs along with opening new hotels and amid the growing competitive capacity. Tourists and not only tourists should expect a significant surprise in Adjara, because we plan to invite several stars, but at this stage, I refrain to name them, because negotiations are still pending.”
At the same time, the Adjara Tourism Department is developing new products prior to the launch of the swimming season. Adjara visitors will be allowed to enjoy diving services. The Adjara Tourism Department plans to implement a joint project in collaboration with the Diving Federation of Georgia.
The project calls for organizing a diving enter in the Sarpi-Kvariati waters of the Black Sea. Before, a vessel will be sunk into the sea and artificial islands, reefs and pyramids will be arranged so as diving tourists be able to see beautiful underwater world and never forget these minutes under the sea.
“The Diving Federation has explored the whole perimeter of the Black Sea waters to determine the appropriate places for diving development. The exploration has showed up that the Sarpi-Kvariati sector is the most suitable zone for the diving development, because the sea is dead on other places, in practice, because there are no submarines under the sea,” David Gotsadze, founder of the Diving Federation, told GBW.
Before the organization of the diving center, the Adjara Tourism Department and the Diving Federation are seeking a vessel to be sunk. The parties have selected two vessels, one of which is private-owned in the Batumi Seaprot. The vessel owner is ready to cede the vessel for 30,000 USD. The second vessel floats in the Poti seaport, which is state-owned and was damaged during the August 2008 Georgia-Russian armed conflict. However, the Diving Federation has launched negotiations with unnamed businessmen to borrow money to finish the project.
The diving sports is a quite popular and expensive tourism product all over the world. Currently, the scuba diving service is available in Adjara, but the service is limited. The price for diving for 20 minutes at a depth of up to 15 meters is 80 GEL. The diving center will basically serve beginner scuba divers at the first stage.

I think that this project is a great idea and will attract many new tourists.
Kokoity April 2nd, 2010, 01:07 PM Georgian president views rehabilitation process of water supply system in regions
01.04.10
Georgian President is visiting the city of Batumi, Adjara Region. Mikheil Saakashvili discussed details of the rehabilitation of the water supply system of the region with organizers of the project. Saakashvili said about 300-400 thousand tourists are expected to visit the resort of Anaklia in Adjara after its construction is completed and in this regard, water supply problems should be eradicated once and for all.
`The Soviet Union left us very bad conditions in terms of water supply. In towns of Georgia, the local population used to be provided with water supply according to schedule. Under the previous government the destroyed system was being devastated even more, water pipes were being sold and if it had been continued, the whole system would have been actually brought down,` Saakashvili said.
The president said, implementation of other infrastructural projects in the country is very important as well.
`At the end of my presidency, in Georgia there should not be any large settlement having infrastructural and water supply problems. During this period, if water natural gas and electricity supply problems are finally resolved, we can consider it a breakthrough during my presidency`, Saakashvili said.
Prime Minister Nikoloz Gilauri said at the meeting, that GEL 1 billion will be invested in rehabilitation of the water supply system in Georgia during the next three years. He said, talks are being held for funding with the Asian Bank and the European Investment Bank as well.
Georgian Infrastructure Minister Davit Tkeshelashvili, Chair of Adjarian Government Levan Varshalomidze and Head of Municipal Development Foundation Lasha Gotsiridze also attended the meeting.
Rehabilitation of the water supply system in Kobuleti town of Adjara Region will be completed in November 2010. Georgian President viewed the rehabilitation process at the scene on Thursday. Mikheil Saakashvili viewed construction of the sewage collector in Aghmashenebeli Street. Sewer pipes are being installed there now. A new reservoir of 6500 cubic metres will also be constructed in the village of Kvirike in May. Cost-protecting works are underway in Kobuleti as well.
Prior to visiting Adjara Region, the president arrived in the city of Kutaisi, Imereti Region. Mikheil Saakashvili viewed the rehabilitation works of water supply system on the crossing of Newport and Gaponov Streets. The rehabilitation of the water supply network in Kutaisi has been carried out by funding of the Municipal Development Foundation for the second year. The project intends installing new pipes in all streets of the city and reconstruction of the reservoir and consists of three stages. GEL 30 million was allocated to the first stage, in consequence of which the water supply systems have been rehabilitated in 50 streets of Kutaisi. From 2011 the city will be provided with 24-hour water supply. Along with the president, Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri and Regional Development Minister Davit Tkeshelashvili also visited Kutaisi.

Kokoity April 30th, 2010, 03:11 PM Batumi to host international tourism exhibition
(...) Last year, has witnessed a promising recovery for the region’s tourism business, which experienced a sharp decline in 2008. From January through November of 2009, the number of tourists in Adjara reached approximately 513,000, which was about twice the amount from the same period in 2008.
Adjara, and in particular Batumi, has undergone a total reconstruction in recent years. At the moment, 120 hotels operate in the region and 18 more will be built over the next three years.(...)
Last week Batumi was a subject of CNN’s iList series of reports, a monthly feature which visits a different country each month to take a look at its future prospects. Called “Batumi Reborn,” the story promoted Batumi as a city with European history, which slipped into bad hands after the Bolsheviks occupied it in the early 20th century and which is currently undergoing a tremendous construction boom and economic change.

Georgian President attends presentation of railway line rehabilitation project
29.05.10
Georgian President attended presentation of railway line rehabilitation project in the settlement of Makhinjauri in the outskirts of Batumi in Adjara Region. Mikheil Saakashvili, holding symbolic rails, addressed the local residents there. In his speech he said that within the project new jobs will be created in Batumi very soon. The railway line will be moved from the seaside to the mountain that will vacate territories for new resorts, that according to the president means new investments in Adjara Region. After the project is completed, passengers will be able to travel from Tbilisi to Batumi by a modern electric train in tree hours.
`Batumi should actually turn into a large and very comfortable city, where 100 percent of population will be employed. This is impossible, but for this, we should have proper communications set up. This project of the railway line will allow much more people to invest money in it. Batumi will really become a rich city`, Saakashvili said.

The foundation of new railway was laid in Makhinjauri
The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili attended the presentation of the new project of railway in Makhinjauri. The President of Georgia addressed the population holding the symbol of rail in his hand. During his speech he noted that this project would increase the number of employed people. He said that his major aim is to abolish poverty and have 100 percent of employment rate.
"It is my principle to do everything in order to have better live. You all deserve it. Batumi must be turned into the best city not only on Black Sea region, today it is like that already, but into a very comfortable city where we will have 100 percent of employment rate. It is possible, but we need all communications to be ready for that. This is why we need this railway, the highway etc. We are planning to start the construction of new bypass road to Batumi, this project will not only employ many people, but it will give us a chance to put the railway far away from the sea coast. We are planning to put the railway higher, up in the mountains and much space will be emptied for new resorts this way. This way there will be less traffic in the center of the city and on the other hand it will become much easier to get to Batumi, because this new road will only take 2 hours and 50 minutes. Besides these all we will have more chance to attract investments in Batumi. Batumi will really become a very rich city", the President of Georgia stated.
Due to this new project the railway line will move far away from seacoast and it will give a chance to Batumi to become the center of the region. The traffic of load and the number of passengers will increase; this is one of the very important factors for tourism. New railway line will be built together with French Railways and five thousand people will be employed on this project.

President of Georgia and Chairman of Government of Adjara Launch Construction of Batumi Opera Theatre
There is launched construction of the Batumi Opera Theatre on the territory of former Summer Theatre in the Batumi Boulevards. The official ceremony was attended by President Saakashvili and Chairman Varshalomidze.
"Today, we have launched construction of one of the most beautiful and modern opera theatres all over the world. It will be truly Grand Opera and Music Hall along the Black Sea shore. The Opera Theatre will be built by Georgian constructors. This is another thousand of employed people in terms of current recession. And, this is a stone put onto the future of Georgia, and this is more important.
We will turn Batumi into the most beautiful and attracting cities along the Black Sea shore. It will be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It will be pride for modern Georgia as well as our future generations for hundred years to come.
There will be launched development of one of the most beautiful seaside boulevards all over the world just in two weeks. It will be better than in Cannes, Nice, Valencia, or Barcelona… All our efforts are directed to attract more tourists, and employ more local people in order to offer them future advantages and nurture our children in better conditions", stated President Saakashvili.
"This place is rather symbolic for every Batumian. Here used to be the Summer Theatre. All our meetings with our population used to begin with one and the same question about that theatre restoration. And, we assure you to build a completely new theatre. There will be built a new Opera House just in one year here.
Batumi will truly turn into a cultural centre with such Grand Opera. It will host our prominent singers as well as world leading performers. And, our city will turn into one of the most attractive and marvelous places along the Black Sea shore and Europe. Let me express my gratitude to the architects for the presented project which will certainly beautify our city", stated Chairman Varshalomidze.

HE said that the OPERA project has been scrapped and for the same building design, they're building an exhibition center instead. but what puzzles me is that in the NEWS report, they SIAD OPERA, but the title reads exhibition...this is too confusing.....
