Hehe, they just update it on the 9th :D
Usually they would state the height in metres lah for their project skyscrapers, bu this one is unavailable. What do you guys think of the design? I think this one looks fine but kinda different. Anyway, that's what I like about the KL, lotsa different taste combined into one skyline.

I passed thru that site yesterday and found out bout the mysterious construction after all. It will be a construction of 2 block 20 storey condominium and 3 storey annexe building. There's no rendering yet cause the developer just put the sign 2 days ago after a month into construction.

Mmm...3 different condominium construction at the same time, all near to each other. :D How interesting ;)

"The latest addition to the KLCC development precinct will be the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Planned to attract regional and international conventions, trade shows, public exhibitions, dinner functions and sporting events; the centre comprises a 3,000-seat plenary hall, 500-seat theatre, 110,000 square feet (10,000 square metres) of exhibition space, large conference halls, grand ballroom, banquet hall and 19 meeting rooms. Complementary facilities to be provided include VVIP suites, media room, business centre, bridal suites, prayer rooms, medical room, AV production rooms, concierge and luggage rooms.
A retail space for food outlets with over 200 seats, family restaurant, café, travel agency and bureau d'change will also be included. The convention centre will incorporate a large aquarium that focuses on "edu-tainment"; a truly unique underwater experience with extensive use of multi-media technologies that integrates technology, education and entertainment. To be developed as part of the convention centre complex is a 600-room four-star hotel that provides a convenient accommodation for convention business delegates.

This landmark development will be equipped with state-of-the-art data network, structured cabling, wireless LAN, telecommunication and digital audiovisual facilities, which give flexibility for delegates to access more material and stay connected to their home base. These facilities shall establish a new benchmark for a convention venue.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, together with the existing Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur and the shopping and entertainment facilities of Suria KLCC complex provide a unique integrated precinct that can cater to needs of international and local convention and exhibition centre delegates.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and the proposed hotel is an exciting addition to Kuala Lumpur, justifying the claim that KLCC is one of the most important urban spaces in the world.

Located on Basement 1 and 2, the AQUARIA@KLCC is designed to be a next generation aquarium that showcases exceptional "education and entertainment" elements. The "Discovery Zone", where the latest technologies will be employed to enhance the aquarium experience, is a truly unique and a world first in the extensive use of multi-media technologies to integrate technology, education and entertainment in the aquarium experience. Malaysian mountains, rainforest rivers, mangrove swamps, coastal areas, natural creatures and marine ecosystem will be the main focus of the aquarium. A moving "walkway" transports the visitors through the waters of the ocean reef and into the deep-blue sea where massive sharks, rays and electric eels are just some of over 3,000 fish that are only feet away from visitors. This is very impressive. I hope they do not just pluck the corals from the ocean and put it there. It's very destructive. The best way is go down and see for yourself. I feel very sad when I realised marine lifes which are usually found in ocean like lionfish, moray eels, angel fish could be found in small aquarioum shops near my place where I'm staying now!!! Hate to think the current situation of salt water aquarium trade in big cities.

I've been to the Langkawi Aquarium before..........not too bad (that time it was in 1996 lah)........better than Zoo Negara's but significantly inferior to that of Sentosa's (Singapore). :(

"The proposed hotel is conceived as a 4 star hotel which is seamlessly integrated with the Convention Centre. It will provide accommodation not only for convention and exhibition delegates but will also cater for visiting business people to the Kuala Lumpur City Centre precinct generally.

Located at the eastern wing of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the hotel has been configured with two wings serviced by a central elevator core. The stepping building mass minimizes overshadowing of the park, while the first level of accommodation rooms at Level 11 are elevated above the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre roofs to enable full access to the park and precinct views.

The taller wing provides for uninterrupted views to the park and allows for the most advantageous solar orientation. This wing contains various types of guest rooms between Level 11 and Level 32 with the uppermost level accommodating the gym, swimming pool, steam and dry sauna and spa facilities.

The lower east and west wing contains approximately 9 rooms per floor between Level 11 and 26. The facade is modelled to have views of the park and is protected by sunscreens.

Entry to the hotel is via the hotel entrance hall, which is a transit arrival space, from where guests will be directed to public lifts to take them to the registration desk located at the sky lounge at Level 5.

Taxi, bus and vehicle access to the hotel is via Persiaran KLCC. A porte cochere will provide for taxi and bus set down at street level.

· Sky Lobby Main Reception on Level 5 and dedicated Group Reception on Level 1.
· Buffet and signature restaurants and park view lounge on higher levels.
· Business centre with private meeting rooms.
· Swimming pool, children wading pool, gym, steam and dry sauna facilities on rooftop.
· Direct internal access to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
· Dedicated parking for hotel guests. "

I was worrying the high of the convention centre would block the beautiful background view of Jalan Sultan Ismail skyline.
But now I think this is the best urban design..they even put the trader hotel to fill the empty background near the ExxonMobil tower....obviusly they had done a good reseach on these area...they will put more high rise on the other side of the park...when the whole KLCC development complete ..it will be all high rise view circling or surrounding the centre park....it's amazing!

KL Convention Centre booked until 2010

By Fintan Ng

The RM550 million Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has received bookings until 2010, although the centre will not be ready before June 2005.

The convention centre has received bookings for more than 90 events, with the 10th Annual Asian Oil and Gas Convention 2005 (AOGC 2005) being organised by Petroliam Nasional Bhd topping the list, followed by a global gynaecology convention.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre complex, which comprises halls of various sizes and functions, is located on a 40ha site and forms part of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

The project is now 65% completed, said Peter Brokenshire, general manager of Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which will manage the centre. Convex is jointly owned by KLCC Holdings Bhd and Australian firm Ogden International Facilities Corporation Pty Ltd.

He said Convex was working closely with various companies and organisations to turn the centre into an ideal destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE). Convex had already made arrangements with the likes of Malaysian Airlines System Bhd, Tourism Malaysia, and a leading travel exhibitor Frankfurt-based IMEX, he said.

Brokenshire said Convex was also looking at attracting business from the medical and medical-related, oil and gas, palm oil and information and communications technology sectors.

“Once the convention centre has established a name for itself, the international segment will pick up,” he said. That would likely happen within the first five years of operation, he added.

He said the convention centre’s strategic location in the middle of Kuala Lumpur’s business district is one of its main selling points.

The other draw is its state-of-the-art facilities.

The 571-room Shangri-La-owned Traders hotel would be directly accessible from the main convention facilities; while another 10,000 hotel rooms would be wthin a 15-minute walk, he said.

KLCC to extend retail space in Petronas Towers
Part of RM770m proceeds from IPO will be used to finance project

By EDDIE TOH
IN KUALA LUMPUR

KLCC Property, the owner of the world's second tallest buildings, will use part of the proceeds from its initial public offering to extend its highly popular retail podium.

Ishak Imam Abas, CEO of KLCC, said yesterday the new development will comprise a retail podium with 160,000 sq ft of lettable area and an office block with 450,000 sq ft.

He said the company is identifying potential partners for the new development on condition they also become primary tenants of the office component.

The site of the retail add-on is between the Suria KLCC retail podium and the group's Mandarin Oriental Hotel in the heart of the Malaysian capital. The retail podium is located at the base of the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, which were the tallest structures in the world after they were completed in 1997. But the towers were knocked off their perch last year by Taipei 101, which soars 56 metres higher.

Mr Ishak was speaking at a press briefing following the launch of KLCC Property's listing prospectus yesterday.

KLCC Property - the property arm of national oil corporation Petroliam Nasional or better known as Petronas - plans to raise RM770 million (S$347 million) from a public issue of 432.1 million new shares. Some 338.7 million shares will be offered to institutional investors via book building, while 77.8 million shares will be offered to retail investors at RM1.68 apiece. Another batch of 15.6 million shares at RM1.68 each has been set aside for eligible staff.

Adviser Commercial International Merchant Bankers (CIMB) has put in place a refund mechanism to ensure that the retail price will be at a discount of at least 7 per cent to the institutional price. The offer will close on July 30.

CIMB CEO Nazir Razak said the share sale will be the largest property IPO in Malaysia's corporate history. KLCC Property has a property portfolio worth more than RM7 billion.

It is also the largest IPO so far this year, almost doubling the total funds raised from 42 IPOs in the first seven months of this year.

He said the company is expected to have a market capitalisation exceeding US$500 million and a high free float of 49 per cent.

'The IPO of KLCC Property represents a unique opportunity for investors to own a share of the national icon,' he said.

KL Convention Centre targets 400 events

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is targeting to host up to 400 events per year for the first five years of operations beginning June 2005, says its management company Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s general manager Peter Brokenshire.

He said the centre had locked in 130 events till 2010, but was targeting 400 events per year, including international conferences.

Brokenshire said over 20 events were set to take place at the centre in the one-year period from June next year, which would bring in a total of over RM21 million in revenue.

“We have a substantial number of local, regional and international enquiries still coming in,” he said at a media briefing in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 7. KLCC Holdings Bhd and Australian firm Ogden International Facilities Corporation Pty Ltd jointly own Convex.

Bookings pour in for KL Convention Centre
It will open only next year but has already been booked for 160 major events
By Carolyn Hong
Malaysia Correspondent
In Kuala Lumpur

MALAYSIA is keen to grab a bigger slice of the lucrative conventions market when its latest landmark - the Kuala Lumpur Con- vention Centre - opens next June.

Located in an enviable spot in the shadow of the Petronas Twin Towers, the RM550 million (S$240 million) sprawling centre already has 160 major events on its calendar up to 2010.

Two weeks after it opens, it will host the 1,200 delegates of the Oil and Gas Conference.

This will be a warm-up for other large events such as the Food and Hotel exhibition in September next year, which expects 15,000 visitors, and the World Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in November 2006, with 9,000 delegates.

The KL Convention Centre will be the city's fifth major facility. The others are the Putrajaya Convention Centre, which opened last year, the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Sunway Convention Centre and Resort and Putra World Trade Centre.

The old Subang airport on the outskirts of the city was also scheduled to be turned into a convention centre, with the unique selling point of having a runway for planes to taxi right up to its doorstep. But the project has been put on hold.

Is the field beginning to look crowded? Not so, said KL Convention Centre's general manager Peter Brokenshire, who is convinced that the market is big enough for all the players.

Each centre has its own niche and the KL Convention Centre is eyeing the international market.

Its selling point: location, location, location.

It is in the midst of the city's plushest real estate; a stone's throw from hotels with a total of 10,000 rooms; next door to the glitzy Suria mall and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra hall, and served by the light-rail transit system.

The KL Convention Centre is owned by KLCC Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of national oil company Petronas.

Since the late 1990s, Malaysia has tapped successfully into the lucrative conventions market.

According to Tourism Malaysia records, Malaysia hosted 2,956 events in 2002, a substantial leap from just 387 in 1999.

From 1999 to last year, about 7,000 events were held in the country, with more than two million foreign participants generating over RM6.6 billion in revenue.

Last year, Malaysia hosted two of its biggest international events - the Non-Aligned Movement summit and the Organisation of Islamic Conference summit.

The conventions market contributes about 8 per cent of total tourism revenue.

'The Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) industry is an important segment of the tourism industry in Malaysia,' said a Tourism Malaysia spokesman.

It is estimated that for every ringgit paid to the convention centre, a delegate spends another RM10 on other expenses such as accommodation, transport, food and shopping. In general, a conference delegate spends three times more than a normal tourist, and stays twice as long.

Mr Nor Azmi Sulong, vice-president of the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers, said there are not enough large centres in the country to meet demand. Bookings often have to be rejected during peak months like June and July, and hotels do not have the capacity to hold big events.

'This is where we are losing out. We are not competing with each other, we are competing with Singapore and Thailand,' said Mr Nor Azmi, who is also Putra World Trade Centre's senior manager of international marketing.

The lack of international awareness of Malaysia as a convention destination has been the major obstacle to growth.

'Many have simply not thought about Malaysia as a destination,' said Mr Brokenshire.

But that is also its advantage. Its relative newness is attractive to jaded organisers looking for a new experience.

About half of the foreign conference delegates in Malaysia come from Singapore.

The other large markets are Japan, Thailand, China, the United States and Australia.

KLCC's Convention Centre To Host XVIII Figo World Congress
March 10, 2005 20:13 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's world class convention facility, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre which is part of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) has been selected as the host venue for the XVIII FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology & Obstetrics 2006.

An agreement towards this was signed here Thursday between the Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM) and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

In a statement here Thursday, chairman of XVIII FIGO World Congress (http://www.figo2006kl.com/), Abd Aziz said that the international congress which will be held for the first time ever in Malaysia was expected to attract over 8,000 Gynaecology & Obstetrics specialists from 135 countries around the world.

"It is to present and discuss the latest developments in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics," said Abd Aziz.

Kuala Lumpur won the bid to host the XVIII FIGO World Congress after overcoming stiff competition from other cities namely Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul and Manila.

The congress is held tri-annually and past cities in which it has been held include Montreal, Copenhagen, Washington DC and Santiago.

Abd Aziz said that Kuala Lumpur has a reputation for hosting successful conventions and that the organisers had looked at several venues and were very impressed with the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and the professional way it is managed.

"They work as a team and we already feel that they are very much part of the congress we are planning," he added.

KLCC general manager, Peter Brokenshire, meanwhile said: "We are delighted that we will be the host venue for such a prestigious international congress and in addition to enhancing Kuala Lumpur's international reputation as a prime congress destination, the congress will also bring significant economic benefits."

He also said that the economic impact of the event was estimated conservatively at RM78.8 million, which will greatly benefit both Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia.

Supported by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia Airline and DBKL, the XVIII FIGO World Congress Gynaecology & Obstetrics will be held at KLCC from Nov 5 to 10, 2006.

The congress will also feature a four-day exhibition where pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment and system manufacturers will showcase their latest products and services.

KL Convention Centre to open in June

STORIES BY ANGIE NG

THE soon-to-be-opened Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre will add another feather in the cap to the 100-acre Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) development as the premier business address and the most happening place in the city.

The RM550mil world-class convention centre, which will open its doors on June 12, will be the city's most technologically advanced and purpose-built facility for international, regional and local conventions, trade shows, public exhibitions, entertainment and private functions.

Located on 7.3 acres adjacent to the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, the 20,059 sq m facility is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture company between KLCC (Holdings) Bhd and Ogden International Facilities Corp Pte Ltd of Australia.

According to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre general manager Peter Brokenshire, being part of the KLCC development is certainly an advantage as there is a lot of synergy that can be tapped between the different precincts of the “city-within-the-city” development.

The KLCC has become an international icon of architectural splendour, having held the record as the world's tallest building from 1995 to 2003, when Taiwan’s Taipei 101 took over the title.

The components of the KLCC include a 50-acre park, the signature Petronas Twin Towers, six-storey Suria KLCC shopping centre and three hotels.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/p4ConventionCentre.jpg

An artist's impression of the RM550m Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The 571-room Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2006, is located on the eastern wing with an integrated lobby for direct access into the convention centre.

Also at the site are the 643-room Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur and the newly refurbished 335-room Impiana KLCC Hotel located opposite the centre that is due to open by the fourth quarter this year.

Within a 10-minute walk from the KL Convention Centre are a total of 10,000 four- and five-star hotel rooms.

An air-conditioned pedestrian walkway linking the convention centre to Suria KLCC will provide access to the city’s premier shopping centre and the Putra LRT station.

Being the newest convention facility in the city and with its array of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, Brokenshire said the rates for the use of the convention facility would be competitive with those in the other cities around the region.

The centre will be equipped with facilities, including the latest in wireless, third generation telecommunications and digital audio-visual facilities.

There will be a plenary hall on two levels with tiered seating for 3,000, a plenary theatre, four exhibition halls, a grand ballroom for 2,000 banquet guests, a conference hall for 1,800 delegates and 20 meeting rooms.

Other facilities include VIP rooms, press rooms, business centre, medical centre, parenting rooms, audio-visual production rooms and hospitality suites.

There is also an aquarium, the Aquaria@KLCC, that will showcase 5,000 varieties of tropical fishes and a unique underwater edu-tainment experience.

Brokenshire said the spectacular backdrop of the Petronas Twin Towers and the KLCC Park provided one of the most prestigious settings for banquets and social events. The centre also has the flexibility to adapt to entertainment and sporting events.

As a start of a good sign, more than 200 bookings for events at the centre have been confirmed until 2010. In the long list are some quite notable and prestigious events that have been won through intense bidding.

One such event is the XVIII FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology & Obstetrics 2006 that will be held for the first time in Malaysia. It is expected to attract over 8,000 specialists from 135 countries.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/b_p4advancebooking.jpg

The 10th Annual Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition from June 12 to 14 will mark the official opening of the KL Convention Centre. Other events lined up for this year include International Homebuyer 2005 (Aug 12-14) and PATA Travel Mart (Sept 27-30).

Bookings for next year include Malaysia International Furniture Fair 2006, from March 7 to 11, 11th Annual Oil & Gas Conference (June 11-13) and 27th International Society for Music Education World Conference (July 16-21).

“We have been actively marketing the convention centre for the last three years by taking part in major international trade shows in the US, Australia, Britain, Europe and the region.

“As a member of the International Conference and Convention Associations, we also have the opportunity to tap its database for forthcoming events,” he added.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/b_p4arrival.jpg

To create greater awareness of the centre, an active advertising campaign in the newspaper and via the radio kicked off last month.

“Our target is to host more than 400 events in the first year of operations. This will be gradually increased to 500 in the next two to three years,” Brokenshire said.

Making a difference in local MICE market

ALTHOUGH efforts to promote Malaysia as the destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) are bearing fruits as seen by the increasing number of such events hosted in the country, more need to be done.

Last year, 2,875 such international events were held in the country involving 675,699 foreign delegates. Receipts from these delegates rose to RM2.1bil from RM1.7bil in 2003.

With intense competition, especially from other neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong, it pays to do more to promote the growing MICE market.

Through more coordinated efforts between the various related parties and industry players to promote MICE in tandem with tourism promotion, conference delegates can look forward to a great experience of what Malaysia offers as a tourist destination.

A lot of benefits and spinoffs can be expected from an active and lucrative MICE business.

According to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre general manager Peter Brokenshire, conference delegates are super tourists as they bring in more revenue than the typical ones.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/b_p4arrival.jpg

This is because most of the expenses for their travel and participation in the event will be borne by their companies.

On the average, each delegate spends about RM1,200 a day inclusive of accommodation, travel expenses and food.

As an example, he said the country could look forward to reap RM78.8mil in total revenue from the six-day XVIII FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology & Obstetrics to be held at the KL Convention Centre from Nov 5 to 10 next year.

“Besides enhancing Kuala Lumpur’s reputation as a prime congress destination, such international events will also result in a significant impact on the services industry and economy,” Brokenshire said.

He said Malaysia had the potential to groom its popularity as a world-renowned destination.

“Besides its multicultural diversity and the interesting sights and sounds of the country, it is also equipped with first-class infrastructure such as the expressway linkages, KL International Airport and Putrajaya administrative city.”

Other plus points that conference delegates can look forward to include the pre- and post-event tours, shopping expeditions, the lively city life and the well established services industry.

“Kuala Lumpur is also one of the cheapest cities in the region in terms of hotel rates, shopping choices and transportation.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/b_p4convention.jpg

“At US$100 for a five-star hotel room in the city, the rates are at least 40% cheaper than those in Bangkok, Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong,” he noted.

Brokenshire said the bidding for MICE events had become increasingly competitive.

The organisers will look at the whole spectrum of issues including safety, costing, infrastructure, government support, accessibility and scope for touring and sight seeing, and other social activities.

“We have to look at the bid document very strategically and coordinate with the various agencies and related parties such as the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, police, event organisers and sponsors.

“By leveraging on what the city can offer and tapping the vast resources of the related trade and agency, we are confident of making a difference in Malaysia’s MICE industry,” he said.

GM set on providing a centre of excellence

BY ANGIE NG

A COMMITMENT to excellence is driving Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre general manager Peter Brokenshire to take up the challenge of working behind the scene at the pre-opening of international convention centres in different parts of the world.

His 30-year experience in the industry has taken him to South Africa, Australia and Malaysia.

As chief executive officer of two such facilities in South Africa and Australia previously, Brokenshire was responsible for the pre-opening of the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa, and the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This is not his first posting in Malaysia. In 1994 to 1996, Brokenshire was the director of catering and convention services at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur. He re-engineered the catering and convention facilities and services at the PWTC.

He assumed his present position as the general manager of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre two years ago and was around to witness the project’s ground-breaking ceremony by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed in February 2003.

Much has happened since then and Brokenshire was involved in many aspects of the centre’s development and design planning.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/4/25/business/p5Peter.jpg

Peter Brokenshire at his office on the 37th floor of Petronas Twin Towers.
From his office on the 37th floor of Petronas Twin Tower Two, which is the pre-opening office for the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, he literally keeps a close eye on the development.

He also complements his aerial view of the project with two daily site visits. With the facility almost ready, his focus is now on fine-tuning the technical and infrastructure readiness of the convention facilities.

Leading up to the opening of the convention centre will be 22 preview events for the trade people including event organisers, Malaysia Airlines and tour agencies, the media, diplomatic corps and related government agencies.

“Our aim is to make the centre the best in the region by providing the best possible experience to delegates and organisers of the many events and conferences that will be held here,” he noted.

Providing the marketing and sales support is Jenny Salsbury, who is Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre marketing and sales director.

Salsbury is a well-respected ad veteran in the convention industry. Salsbury was previously the director of conferences for eight years at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.

A native of Hong Kong, she has also spent 13 years marketing Hong Kong as a venue for international conferences and incentive groups.

To meet the high expectations, the team’s priority is to maintain a strong customer focused culture and the highest level of expertise and service standards expected of a world-class convention centre.

Where a lot of thought is given to food

Monday, May 16, 2005

By ESTHER CHANDRAN

THE way to a man's heart is through his stomach. The people behind Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre think so, too.

When it is opened next month, the centre will be the city's new venue for international, regional and local conventions, trade shows, public exhibitions, entertainment and private functions.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/5/p2chef.jpg

Lim (centre) and his team of veterans are ready
to impress and delight everyone at the convention centre.

But, at the heart of it all, is its commercial kitchen.

The culinary and catering capabilities the centre has are set to impress and liven up even the mundane meetings.

Marketed as a five-star convention centre, the venue on a 2.9ha site is home to Malaysia's largest commercial kitchen.

Marketing and Sales director Jennifer Salsbury said the centre's catering facilities and menus were different from what people had been used to previously.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/5/p2jennifer.jpg

Salsbury … 'food is an important aspect of
a function as it drives the movement of people.

“There is no compromise on quality,'' said Salsbury.

“Our core value is to offer outstanding catering for conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, public shows and private functions.”

Helming the kitchen is executive chef Richmond Lim, who has 51 experienced hands assisting him.

A major difference at Lim's kitchen is the “cook and chill” production system, a first of its kind in the country for banquet caterings.

“With the method, the food is cooked, chilled and regenerated,” said Lim, adding that the centre's kitchen had 35 specialised combi ovens.

“The cooked meat is tender, juicy and retains its freshness,'' he said.

The Plenary Hall as how it will look
when guests move in.

Lim's culinary presentation is decidedly different, both in taste and presentation.

“I believe in treating ingredients with respect,'' said Lim. “I extract their flavours and present them with character.”

A variety of culinary inventions are there along with over 100 traditional dishes of Kelantanese, Indonesian, Cantonese, Thai, Punjab, Indian, Korean and Taiwanese origin. Added to these are a selection of Continental and International cuisine that includes Mediterranean, Italian, German, Brazilian, South African and French.

“We can adapt our menu to suit our customers' preferences,” said Lim whose speciality is in combining traditional taste with modern styles.

Some of his unique flavours are the elegant Symphony of Seafood (fresh blue ocean yabbies on a bed of crisp lettuce and citrus salsa dressed with ginger flower vinaigrette), Pan Seared Sea Scallop with Shimeji and Edamame Beans garnished with Crystallised Century Egg, Pan Roasted Grainy Rack of Lamb served with Dainty Vegetables and Peking Duck Roulette with Harvest of Spring with foie gras and grape.

Lim has 24 years of banqueting experience, having previously worked as Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre's executive chef.

He once planned and co-ordinated a dinner for 7,000 guests and seven wedding dinners with different menus – all in a day.

“Food is an important aspect of a function as it drives the movement of people,'' said Salsbury.

Whether it is a meeting, an exhibition or trade show, food and its presentation takes centre stage.
The kitchen is located at the centre's basement and Level 3.

Whether it is a meeting, an exhibition or
trade show, food and its presentation takes centre stage.

Salsbury is looking forward to the centre's June 12 event – the 10th Annual Asia Oil and Gas Conference (AOGC 2005).

“It will be fantastic to see the first event take place with the lightings in place, the stage and cameras and the presentation of the food.

“It will be a fantastic feel just to put them all together,” she said.

The centre has a 3,000-seat Plenary Hall, 500-seat Plenary Theatre, 9,710 sq m exhibition halls, 1,800-seat conference hall, 2,000-seat grand ballroom and 600-seat banquet hall. Along with these are 20 spacious meeting rooms, totalling 1, 922 sq m.

The centre is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture company between KLCC (Holdings) Berhad and Ogden International Facilities Corporation Pty Ltd, Australia.

It is owned by Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).

KL Convention Centre to open in mid-June

THE Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre - the city's latest meeting place where visitors can surf the Internet wirelessly within its premises as well as download e-mail on third-generation (3G) phones - will open in the middle of next month.

“The centre is now 95% completed. We are on schedule to open in mid-June,” general manager Peter Brokenshire told reporters after a media tour in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The centre comprises a 3,000-seat plenary hall, 500-seat plenary theatre, 9,710 sq m exhibition space, 1,800-seat conference hall, 2,000-seat grand ballroom, 600-seat banquet hall and 20 spacious meeting rooms.

Brokenshire said the centre's sophisticated technology gave it a competitive advantage over competitors in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore.

The facility had to date secured 184 bookings between the middle of June and 2012, he said. It will hold its first event, the 10th Annual Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, from June 12 to 16.

Brokenshire said the conference was likely to attract an estimated 1,200 delegates and create more than RM7.5mil in tourism spending.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/5/18/business/b_pg06convention.JPG

Peter Brokenshire (inset) says the centre is now 95% completed.

He said the KL Convention Centre was poised to attract international delegates, mostly business tourists, who were known to have higher spending power and stay longer than leisure visitors.

Since its launch in February 2003, the centre had created 177 full-time jobs, which would increase to 257 when it opened in mid-June, Brokenshire said.

The convention centre cost RM550mil and took 30 months to construct, he added.

It is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture company of KLCC (Holdings) Bhd, a wholly owned unit of Petroliam Nasional Bhd and Australia's Ogden International Facilities Corp Pty Ltd.

Brokenshire said an international aquarium under a separate management would be completed in time for the convention centre's opening.

Tradewinds Corporation Bhd is investing RM3 million to build a six-level escalator link from its hotel the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur to the new Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The move is to tap into the business potential for the hotel from those attending functions at the convention centre.

Tradewinds Hotels & Resorts Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer Amir Abdul Rahman says the link, which is expected to be completed in October, will provide convenience for its hotel guests attending functions in the convention centre.

In addition, attendees at the convention centre will be able to patronise the hotel’s food and beverage outlets by using the link — making the hotel a mere eight minutes’ walk away.

“The link will enhance our earnings both from room occupancy and F&B outlets,” he tells FinancialDaily

Amir says it has submitted the plans for the construction of the link to the local authorities and expects to obtain approval soon.

He adds that there are also plans to put up a café along the link for passers-by to have a quick and light meal.

With the link, the revenue contribution from its F&B outlets is expected to increase to 55% by year-end from 40% currently, while occupancy rate is seen to improve to 70% from 60%.

Amir says it will expand its F&B outlets in Crowne Plaza, providing variety to its guests with a new Indochina cuisine restaurant and either a steak house or Iranian cuisine restaurant by this year.

Wow, beautiful convention centre!! Already, new business is being brought in I see...the oil and gas conferences are routinely held in KL, so nothing new...but I don't think we've ever been priveledged enough to hold a world congress of anything in a medical field...that's a first! These things, if held in Asia, usually end up going to Singapore or HK....cool!

Hmm...escalator link :?
How long will it be...beside Crowne Plaza is not exactly near to KLCC, well, maybe if they use the short cut road.

Wonder how the rendering of this thing will be.

KL Convention Centre To Boost M'sia's Reputation As A MICE Hub
June 02, 2005 21:19 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 (Bernama) -- The city's latest swanky offering, the RM550 million Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, is set to boost Malaysia's reputation as a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) hub not only locally, but also regionally and internationally.

Peter Brokenshire, general manager of Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the company that operates and manages the centre, said the management had spent in excess of RM1 million in advertising and promoting of the convention centre.

"It is a very sizeable budget and it gives us the ability to market effectively internationally, regionally and locally," he told reporters at a preview of the convention centre here, Thursday.

The preview was the 24th to be held over the past three weeks, with more than 3,500 people having had the privilege to view the city's latest landscape.

The manager of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Convex Malaysia, meanwhile is a joint venture company between KLCC (Holdings) Bhd and Australian based-Odgen International Facilities Corporation Pty Ltd.

However, the convention centre is owned by Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).

The convention centre, which took 27 months to be fully constructed, represents the latest project within PETRONAS' distinctive Kuala Lumpur City Centre development.

Designed as a "city within a city", the 100-acre development boasts the latest in wireless, 3G telecommunications and digital audio-visual facilities, with the venue comprising a plenary hall and theatre, four exhibition halls, grand ballroom, conference hall, banquet hall and an additional 20 meeting rooms.

"We've been in the international market for the last 30 months and we have been marketing at international trade fairs in Australia, Europe, Britain, United States and other parts of South East Asia.

"Besides representatives and publicists overseas, we also advertised in a number of trade publications," said Brokenshire.

He said the centre already has in excess of 200 events booked until year 2012, starting with the 10th Annual Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition to be held from June 12 to 14 this year. He added that the conference would mark the opening of the convention centre as there would be no official opening.

Bookings for next year meanwhile include the Malaysia International Furniture Fair, the 11th Annual Oil and Gas Conference and the International Society for Music Education World Conference.

The confirmed bookings at the convention centre are a mixed of local and international activities, said Brokenshire, ranging from associations, exhibitions, corporates and meetings among others.

"We probably have more local business to start with. We will probably get more international bookings in two to three year's time," he said, adding that the international bookings constituted only 40 percent.

Brokenshire said besides the business like activities, the convention centre has also appealed to couples who would be tying the knot.

"We have already two wedding bookings here for this year," he said.

"And now we are bidding for events from year 2012, 2013 and 2014," he said.

Brokenshire said the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre would bring the local industry to a new level.

"It has a state of the art facility, in one of the best locations in the world, and I think it will enable us to compete very favourably," he said.

As a member of the International Conference and Convention Associations, the convention centre would also have the opportunity to tap its database for forthcoming events, he added.

One of the best in the region. First-class facilities. On par with international convention centres.

These were some of the remarks delegates to the 10th Annual Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition made of the new Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (located next to Mandarin Oriental Hotel).

Some of the 1,300 delegates who were interviewed said the amenities and services at the centre were on par with international convention centres.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/6/m_pg03klconvention.jpg

Another new landmark that has put
Kuala Lumpur on the world map.

“I would say it’s one of the best in location and appearance in South-East Asia,” said Overseas Exhibition Services Ltd director Adam Ridgway.

“It has a very nice finish and a professional touch to it,” he said.

Oman LNG vice-president (marketing and shipping) Adnan Rajab said the centre had a modern look and the facilities were “first class.”

Mitsubishi Corporation general manager (for Europe) Takashi Kuroko said the centre was bigger than those in Japan.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/6/m_pg03rolf.jpg

Thorkildsen...'efficient and helpful staff'

“The location is also very strategic as it is right in the heart of the city.

“In Japan, the convention centres are usually far from town, so they are sometimes quite inconvenient,” he said.

“The place here has a nice touch because there is a park outside and a lot of trees even though it’s in the middle of the city,” he said.

However, Mitsubishi Corporation general manager (Global Gas Unit) Katsumi Kuroda found the initials KLCC “confusing” when the taxi he took sent him to Suria KLCC, which was a walking distance away from the centre.

Another exhibitor, CTour managing director Rolf Thorkildsen said the centre’s personnel were efficient and helpful.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/6/m_pg03ridgway.jpg

Ridgway...'one of the best'

The first event hosted at the centre went without any hitches. If at all there was one, it had to be the sound system in the beginning.

“The panel had started speaking but there was no sound, but since it is new, it’s understandable.

“But after that everything went smoothly,” said Pacific Richfield Marine Pte Ltd general manager Iskandar Z. Dahlan.

He suggested that huge electronic screens be placed at the entrances and elevators to better assist visitors.

Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd (managers and operators of the centre) hoped that the centre would become a premier exhibition centre.

“It would be fabulous to have the centre as the new icon for KL city,” said Convex director of facilities Geoff Hayward.

Those adventurous enough can "Dive-with-the-sharks" and the "Weird and Wonderful" collection of exhibits are housed in an underwater scientific research station.

The AQUARIA@KLCC is designed to make education, marine research and entertainment a lasting, meaningful and fun experience.

FIVE sharks swim a little quicker in their new home. A languid giant garoupa, shy moray eels and large, exotic-looking batfish, do the same - excited to see three divers, carrying pails of fish and two poles, approach them slowly. It's lunchtime at Aquaria KLCC's The Living Oceans, a gigantic aquarium with an underwater tunnel.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/7/11/central/p1aquaria.jpg

The Living Oceans' concept is not new to most Malaysians, especially those who have been abroad. But, what makes it special is its long tunnel - made out of 90m of fibreglass. “It's the largest in South-East Asia,” said Aquaria KLCC's managing director and CEO Terry O'Boyle. ”The longest in the world is in the United States and that measures 120m.”

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/7/11/central/p2fishbig.jpg

A giant garoupa swims around a diver,
hoping to get its lunch.

The Aquaria will house over 3,000 marine creatures of various shapes and sizes in a simulated natural habitat. The tunnel is 1.8m high, and visitors can step on a moving walkway and stop off at different spots anytime to view animals gliding and swimming.

The 55mm-thick tunnel is curved, made to withstand an enormous amount of pressure from the 2.7 million litres of water that fills The Living Oceans’ aquarium. “The glass is custom-made in Germany. It was then shipped to New Zealand and shaped to curve the correct way, then shipped to Malaysia where it was then assembled,” O'Boyle said. The tunnel had to be fitted very carefully, around Aquaria's high columns, which serve as support structures. Because of this, the moving walkway that was originally planned had to be redesigned.

Designing and installing Aquaria's infrastructure cost in excess of RM60mil. Fishes are still being imported to stock the different aquariums there. Maintenance involves a quarantine section, filtration plants and more. To upkeep The Living Oceans, 700 litres are pumped out, cleaned and pumped back at any given time. To get the seawater's chemistry right, a vital part of maintaining the sealife, about 80,000kg of marine salt has to be mixed into it.

As for the underwater support systems, all corals are fake, as is the reproduction of the Royal Nanhai shipwreck.

Part of that is head curator Paul Hamilton's job. He is in charge of stocking and maintaining Aquaria's fishes. He explained how it all started for The Living Oceans.

First, came the testing stocks - moon wrasse. “These were fish to test on.''

The species selected for the aquarium are not endemic to a place. Hamilton said, with the exception of the sharks, the rest were from around South-East Asian waters.

The five sand tiger sharks were brought in from South Africa, and are reportedly not only coping well, but thriving, too. The largest one, a female, measuring over two metres, has even put on weight.

So far, animal handlers and divers have successfully trained the larger fishes, like the five sharks and a single, large garoupa, which has found its home on the other side of the aquarium, to being fed by divers. Once in a while, though, their predatory habits resurface and they chomp on the smaller fish.

Keeping the balance of life there is an important task and a concise science.

“We'll be aiming for 2kg of fish per cubic metre,” said Hamilton “As for feeding the fishes, about 60kg of food (including other fish like mackerel) is used each day.''

Hamilton looks after the animal husbandry, diving crew, filters, lights and support systems.

So far, The Living Oceans is habitat to 40% of the total sealife that will live in the giant aquarium. More are coming in, thrice a week, and slowly being adapted to conditions in the aquarium.

Now, the fishes that have been stocked are larger in size.

Later, the colourful species will be introduced, along with different schools of fish, more moray eels and zebra and nurse sharks.

Aquaria KLCC will house more than 5,000 freshwater and marine animal exhibits.

It also has facilities for the disabled. There are computer screens and multimedia presentations throughout the area to help educate visitors about sea life, as well. Exhibits will also place emphasis on Malaysia's sea life, including unique species found in East Malaysian waters.

Aquaria KLCC will open next month.
