well i just found out that i took it 1 year and three days ago from today. a bit odd. and strangely enough i decided to do it again today. (seriously i had no idea i was three days off making it a year, pure coincidence)

Bankwest Tower, as taken from the site of the new police station, corner Roe and Fitzgerald, Northbridge, today:

All kinds of new stuff, Northbridge link to come, same site, today:

This building is local to me, I have seen it every day to completion. There is a Wilson Car Park built in down the side/underneath, and an extremely high ceiling out front. Looks like a 50 story building cut at its ankles. Not bad, fits in nicely next to Hatch, Stirling Street, today:

Alvse, Dock, anyone....

Can you guys recommend pano software? (I am using a PC)..

Have tried Photoshop - average results... Hugin... much better results...

I have a killa pano ready to go, and I just can't get the exposure of the sky to match up (sunset/skyline)...its from an angle that NOBODY has ever posted on here...

cheers, Nate.

BeeJAy
July 3rd, 2009, 02:49 PM
I have had issues with exposure in the past, I use Panorama Factory (http://www.panoramafactory.com/) as it has a much better smoothing between the shots for the sky. It can be quite advanced to master but it has instructions all the way through, not to mention you really can perfect the pano if you use it to it's full potential. Only problem is that it is paid software, the free version puts logo in the picture but i would recommend using it to test whether you like it before purchasing.

docker
July 3rd, 2009, 05:09 PM
i use Hugin 0.7.0 (Mac) before that i would overlap each photo and adjust the colours myself in photoshop, this is so much easier and better than what i use to do.

Thanks everybody... yes, if you look at Dockers photo, I was on the roof of the brown building... I currently have access to the building, and have been searching for a stealth way to get onto the roof...found it! It is Western Power, and security is pretty tight.

NVL for pic of the year!

The stairs near the lifts are usually the best access ways to roofs. Alaways make sure you put a tissue or something in door so you can get back and dont become trapped.

Docker where about's is this ^^ ? Looks kinda good less the on street parking...
That area would make a good walkable community if there was some front gardens/grass paths and NO walls along there ... i guess if there is an oil shortage in the future it can be easily converted to that....

I like those time lapsed photos miensie... the last two pics are good to see how much the BWH has gone up towards AMP, soon it AMP looks like it will be blocked out of view from that angle or area....

Sanj

its the finbar rivervale development on gt eastern hwy. i dont see how the on street parking is an issue. u need to have some place for visitors to park, especially since this is off gt eastern hwy and u obviously cant park there.

and this freeway interchange needs to be removed or sunk or something! something to make it more people friendly rather than a hangout for the homeless and deranged! it is only a kilometre from the city centre and it is a no go zone, imagine the possibilities of adding 10,000 residents and another 5,000 workers etc, what it would do for the surrounding areas, and would definitely help the case for a northbridge/perth arena train station

and my hope is for two 160m mixed use towers to go up, one to the left of telstra exchange and one infront of the state theatre centre on william st, both of which would use the current street activation, or add more to it, by having the first floor being a retail arcade, as well as the foyers being 20m, then the next 60m will be office, then the next 70m will be residential and the final 10m being a awesome roof feature. that way the developers are only building two 70m residential towers and two 60m office towers but they are combined making them cheaper to build than seperatley, making it more likely for us to get something so tall built. also by having the tower on the northbridge site, it would be no great loss to the skyline if the horseshoe bridge tower didn't go ahead, so that the celebration square plaza thing could be built by barnet.

and i think alvse would challenge that ruling too, nate.

While we are at it, put a hole or three in the plastic seats at Subi Oval. When it rains and you are sitting on them they pool water becuase there is nowhere for it to escape.

^^ you could just sit up every couple of minutes and let it drain, or just get the people sitting behind you, to wrap your poncho over the back of your seat, so the rain doesn't get onto your seat in the first place :D

or the state government could just build us our $850m multi-purpose stadium in which we would be protected from the rain by the larger overhanging roof...

It's one of my personal favourites, this building. I used to see it everyday on the way home from work but no longer. Just amazing, no other word for it. I think it stands out so much, especially in that section of the city, because there just aren't many buildings like it. Not entirely sure if that's a good or bad thing.

One of our forumers actually owns an apartment there I think.

Well close to it - since Perth's roads don't run exactly west-east like a lot of people think. I reckon our CBD roads like St Georges Tce is about 15°-20° off that. So about WNW-ESE.

I'd love to see some shots from around Northbridge as well. Some great views of the CBD from there and surely a few new little stores and spaces have opened in the past 6 months along with many of the office developments about. It was certainly one of the most rapidly changing parts of Perth when I was there.

I used to park very close to that spot you're talking about out quite often.

Goran. Seriously, just shut up. All you ever spout is the same negative crap about Perth. Save it for the Urban Spaces and Your City's Density Threads where other SSC'ers can ridicule you. We don't find it amusing here, at least they do over there.

Don't you realise how much of a broken record you are? A shrill, nasal, annoying one at that.

jarkti has the right attitude and there is nothing wrong with posting those images in the National Threads. He takes pride in his hometown and that's the kind of young people we need more of.

The photo Dilaz posted is amazing. I almost got chills.

You're doing my head in. Just. Shut. Up.

it shows, makes it look even worse, the "all scrapers on 1 street' fact.

Dude, when you start looking on the bright side of life, i think everything will change for you. You can fix half the problems you have in your life by just seeing the positive in everything.

The first thing I saw in that photo was how great it will look with the Horseshoe Tower in relation to the other talls and how awesome the water square will be on the esplanade grass.

Then I read your comment...

Ditch negative, embrace positive, watch your life change.
Give it some thought.

There's nothing shit about it, besides who cares what anyone else thinks, stop being so insecure. Cities have good sides and bad sides, good angles and shit ones, even the town that you spend such an inordinate amount of time wanking over, Melbourne. Such as this photo I took a couple of years back.

tips I remember from the articale I read: put the boom across the boot of the car, poking out on the drivers side, with the camera pointing back in towards the driver. Most, if not all, of the boom should be out of shot. Car parks are nice smooth surfaces, and you really only need to be rolling at a a very slow pace to get the effect, this might help minimise the bouncing...

Yes it will look good there when the other newbies will be built, then anyone can say the only thing that looks not right in the picture is the Duxton Hotel there... or if it's going to stay it's too obvious that that looks like the first tall building in the east of Perth.

The Sheraton is old too, but at least it looks like it blends in with the rest of the white fridges up that way..

I guess the next big lot of development in say another 10 yrs (hopefully less though) would then after all the rest of east perth gets filled up will be land west of Condor towards the Duxton and just a little west of it.... It just seems that height seems to die off in "a step down/hierarchy form after Condor to the Duxton (from that angle) anyway making the concrete colour stand out...

The great irony

Donald Horne remembers the night he penned those words. Within a few weeks the phrase had become the title of the book.

In a hot summer's night in December 1964 I was about to write the last chapter of a book on Australia. The opening sentence of this last chapter was: 'Australia is a lucky country, run by second-rate people who share its luck.'

That sentence was a rather brutal indictment of his country at the time. It is a direct, uncompromising and seemingly unambiguous commentary on Australia in the 1960s. Horne was critiquing an Australia that did not think for itself; a country manacled to its past; and 'still in colonial blinkers': 'If we are to remain a prosperous, liberal, humane society, we must be prepared to understand the distinctiveness of our own society'.

He was thinking about things like Australia's cultural cringe, its foreign policy and the White Australia Policy. He was, to paraphrase those words, talking about a 'not too clever country'.

I had in mind in particular the lack of innovation in Australian manufacturing and some other forms of Australian business, banking for example. In these, as a colonial carry over, Australia showed less enterprise than almost any other prosperous industrial society.

Australia, Horne argued, developed as a nation at a time when we could reap the benefits of technological, economic, social and political innovations that were developed in other countries. Those countries were clever: Australia was simply lucky.

When The Lucky Country was released in 1964, most of the reading public was aware that the phrase was being used ironically. Horne laments the fact that it has since been taken up by others and given different meanings: '... I have had to sit through the most appalling rubbish as successive generations misapplied this phrase'.
