Is the Forrest Chase centre still being redeveloped? Will that work coincide with the Forrest Place stuff?

The art installation is part of the final stage. Next year sometime.

I like the sundial, but its pretty similar to the st George sculpture in a pole in the ground sort of way.

BartBart

Yes - Forrest Place development still being done (as far as I know). I was thinking the same thing re: whether the bigger proposals like the escalator will "block the view" (and whether that'll really matter).

jackso
September 6th, 2009, 10:04 AM
Thats a good point. One of the main aspects of the redevelopment was to reopen sight lines from the murray st end right through the Perth Train Station. The escalator would block that view again..

My vote goes to the sundial.

Sophisticated, celebratory artwork wins international sculpture competition
Portfolio: Planning

The State Government has announced the winner of the $1million situate international sculpture competition which will take pride of place at the centre of the Forrest Place forecourt in Perth.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said artist James Angus, consulting engineer Doug Knox, lighting designer Peter Mclean and industrial designer Sebastian Adams had been chosen from five finalist teams.

When installed, their brightly coloured hollow-cast aluminium three-dimensional biomorphic form will be 11 metres long, three metres wide and 6.5 metres high.

A biomorphic form is a non-representational form or pattern resembling a living organism in shape or appearance.

Mr Day said the design captured the energy of Perth as a growing and evolving city and would be a sculpture that Western Australia was proud to own.

“The five-person jury had a difficult task with 202 entries received from 33 countries, but I am very pleased with their choice,” he said.

Three of the winning team are based in Sydney, with Mr Angus currently working from New York. They described their sculpture as appearing to ‘radically change in shape depending on how it was approached’.

Mr Angus said he was thrilled to win the commission as he had grown up in Perth and attended art school at Curtin University of Technology.

“I hope people like it, but I also quietly hope that a few people don't as it is ultimately more interesting when there's some sort of challenge at hand,” Mr Angus said.

“The sculpture still doesn't have a title but will probably attract all sorts of names in the meantime, which is all part of the process.”

Jury chair Margaret Moore said the panel was looking for a significant statement and believed this to be one of the winning artist’s best works.

“It is a celebratory piece of art. Serious in what it achieves; has a fun presence and sophisticated in its realisation,” Ms Moore said.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the City of Perth was excited by the winning artwork, which will be a significant component of the City of Perth’s master plan for the area’s redevelopment.

“The artwork will have a prominent position in our city’s premier civic place and be a defining place-mark that should evoke much discussion and debate,” Ms Scaffidi said.

James Angus’ work can be seen in the Collections of the Art Galleries of South Australia and WA. He is also represented at the National Gallery of Australia and the Sydney and Chicago museums of Contemporary Art.

More information on situate, images of the five finalists, the competition process and the jurists can be found at https://situate.dca.wa.gov.au/ or phone 9224 7300.

Notice the winner was born in Perth? Surely that worked in his favour as thud city has a habit of shunning ideas by those that were not born/have not lived in Perth.

I really don't like the blob.

How the hell did that win :/
its disgusting, someone said they wanted to open it up so you could see Perth Central, this will now block the view...

I wanted the spire thing because it would be lit up at night, this will probably just get some shitty lights pointed at it, unless it glows green then ill like it :D

Still got me stuffed how its going to cost $1,000,000 though:nuts:

True, but remember that the opening up involved removing a footbridge much larger and more obstructive than this sculpture. Going by the render, it will not significantly block the line of sight.

...sneeze sputum in mid-flight.

As a dissenting member of the offending generation, I wonder what the point of amorphism is? Does anyone know? Without the benefit of further insight, the blob seems to scream Perth at me – bland mediocrity taking itself far too seriously. A bit of irony with the elevator would have been something, a bit of self-deprecating humour.

The blob is a blob.

You need imagination to figure it out.

i love this song... anyone know it/like it?

How do I get closer to you
When you keep it all on mute
How will I know
The right way
To love you

Usually the queen
At figurin out
Breaking down the man
Is no work out
But I have no clue
How to get through to you

I wanna hit you
Just to see if you cry
Keep knockin on wood
Hopin there's
A real boy inside

cause you're not a man
You're just a mannequin
I wish you could feel
That my love is real
But you're not a man

I wish I could just
Turn you on
put a battery in and make you talk
Even pull a string for you
To say anything

But with you there is no guarantee
Only expired warranty
A bunch of broken parts
and I can't seem
To find your heart

I'm such a fool
such a fool
such a fool
this one's outta my hands
I can't put you back together again

Cause you're not a man
You're just a Mannequin
I wish you could feel
That my love is real
But you're not a man
You're just a, a toy
Could you ever be a real, real boy
And understand
But you're not a man

Oh understand
That you're not a man

In 1924, the acclaimed Italian film producer Stefano Pittaluga commissioned cameraman and film maker, Angelo Drovetti to embark on an 8,000 nautical miles voyage from Genoa to Brisbane, via Milano, Messina, Port Said, Colombo, Mauritius, FREMANTLE, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney.

This 60 minute black and white silent film showcases the panoramic views witnessed by Italian, Slavic, Greek, Arabic and Jewish migrants as they stood atop the deck of the old steamer during their seven week voyage from Genoa to FREMANTLE.

Now, on the 85th anniversary of SS Regina D'Italia’s maiden voyage to Fremantle, Dall’ Italia All’Australia will premiere in FREMANTLE in October 2009 to the accompaniment of Kavisha Mazzella and folk band I Viaggiatori.

Building a State of the Arts
One of the biggest industrial workshops of our past is being transformed into a cultural precinct of the future. Penelope Green meets the creative forces working to make it a reality.

Pictures Lee Griffith (I didn't scan)

ABANDONED BUILDINGS with rich industrial heritage often morph into cultural hotspots. London's Tate Modern and Sydney's Powerhouse Museum were disused power stations and Toronto Distillery's whisky supply had dried up long before it became a hybrid arts precinct. More recently, a 17th century Parisian funeral parlour got a new lease of life as the tres hip Le Cent Quatre.

So Midland Atelier, Western Australia's first multi-disciplinary creative industries hub, which is slowly but surely transforming the old State government railway workshops 20km east of Perth, should hardly shock.

The ambitious project to restore the old Foundry and Pattern Shop workshops to their former industrial glory can, however, stretch the imagination, says Kieran Kinsella, chief executive of the Midland Redevelopment Authority (MRA), which is spearheading the project.

"People don't buy into visions quickly, we have discovered," says the affable Kinsella in his office, a short walk from the sprawling Midland Atelier site.

Kinsella is upbeat about the project which, its backers say, is crucial to the growth of WA. They maintain it will drive innovation and the creative economy, thus reducing the State's dependence on the boom-to-bust resources sector, and both stem the exodus of local designing types and lure dynamic new talent from interstate and abroad.

"We have a vision," says Kinsella, "and the good thing about the vision is we are a purpose-built government agency that is focused on its objectives and outcomes."

With its $125 million kitty, the MRA is fast changing the face of Midland with a huge urban-renewal program. The police service has opened an Operations Support Facility — home to communications, forensics and traffic operations centres — and the Federal Government just allocated $180 million for the Midland Health Campus.

Midland Atelier, funded to the tune of $7 million to date, is on track to become fully operational by the end of next year thanks to the MRA's two energetic partners. Independent non-profit Perth creative outfit FORM, the project's management arm, is laying the foundations for extensive programming, on-site residencies, exhibitions and public art and design commissions, while Singapore's Raffles Education Corporation plans to build a design-focused university college on Atelier's doorstep.

From 1904-1990, the heritage site was one of the biggest industrial workshops in the State, employing a 3000-strong workforce that manufactured and mended railway engines and rolling stock and, during World War II, made munitions and boilers and repaired US submarines in Fremantle. The process of restoring it is pleasurable for Kinsella, whose father completed an electro-plating apprenticeship there.

"It is a unique site and a setting that everyone instantly feels comfortable in, particularly when they walk into the Pattern Shop and can still smell the wood," he says. "I don't know anyone I have shown it to who hasn't got that immediate rush of 'Yes, this is happening'."

Taking its name from the "M" and "A" shapes in the old railway workshop roof beams, Midland Atelier (the latter word means workshop or studio) aims to form an environment of learning, ideas and skills exchange. A place where "creatives" — those working in industries ranging from architecture and design to software and publishing — from different backgrounds can interact and come up with bright ideas ripe for exploitation.

The old Foundry building lies dormant, every inch of the space between the dirt floor and high metal and wood beams screaming revamp. But soon it will boast two levels of mixed-use space including glass, jewellery/metal and multimedia design with space for up to 72 designers at one time, a seminar room for 200 people, large-scale public art space and a cafe where, Kinsella predicts, visitors might sit at a table beside the likes of prolific WA artist Bob Juniper and Swan Valley sculptor Ron Gomboc.

Right now all the action is in the Pattern Shop. The core of Midland Atelier's wood, furniture and 3D object design practice, it is already home to 10 furniture designers — six local, three national and one international — and will soon have 24 workbench spaces. Mentoring and working alongside the resident artists is Sydney furniture wunderkind Jon Goulder, whose works have been snapped up across the country.

According to Goulder, Midland Atelier is the largest and best-equipped furniture design workshop in Australia, and things will only get better. "It will fast become a centre of I'd say global, rather than national, excellence," he says. "There are already quite a few international designers interested in coming here to do residencies alongside a growing list of local artists."

When Goulder left Sydney for Perth three years ago to participate in FORM'S Designing Future mentoring program, some of his arty friends were perplexed. Now FORM'S industry liaison officer, he is working on a solo exhibition which will tour nationally and overseas and act as a promotional vehicle for Midland Atelier. Such artist support is unheard of, he says, and he is the envy of mates such as Adam Goodrum, whose furniture designs have been picked up by revered Italian design company Cappellini. "He (Goodrum) is on a world stage but he told me 'I can't believe you are in this position'," grins Goulder.

Nearby, jewellery designer Jessica Jubb has a similar tale. One of a small group of jewellers in the Pattern Shop until the Foundry is refurbished, she was close to trying her luck in Melbourne when she was offered a residency. Energised by the history of the site, Jubb, 33, has found she can be more creative when she doesn't have to worry as much about pushing and marketing her product. "I am getting more work done than I ever have."

An extension of FORM'S Creative Capital campaign, launched in 2005 to lift the level of thought and action regarding Perth's identity and future as an economically sustainable and vibrant city, Midland Atelier promises to fill the State's creative black hole.

In the past decade, WA has had unprecedented population and economic growth, but it has also suffered a net loss of creative talent interstate and overseas while failing to attract a similar age and skill set to Perth. Research by FORM with the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that although Perth had the highest number of graduating creatives, its lack of infrastructure and investment in the sector had bled this human capital dry. Between 2001 and 2006, WA lost more creative arts professionals than it gained.

According to FORM executive director Lynda Dorrington, Midland Atelier will retain local creatives such as Jubb but, just as importantly, boost the inward migration of creative skills and talent.

"There will always be a turnover in creative talent, and Midland Atelier is not designed to provide a sinecure for anybody just because they happen to be here — the global creative economy doesn't work like that," Dorrington says. "The MA watershed will therefore be proportionate to the scale of opportunity we can create in terms of activities, events and commissions for which creatives will compete on the basis of excellence and innovation. We mean business."

Midland Atelier will reconnect WA to Asia, tapping into the potential of the region via sister-city relationships with Asian universities, institutions, markets and specialists. It will target regions with reputations in its three core principles: glass in China, metal and jewellery in Korea and wood and furniture design in Japan.

Dorrington believes that the global economic crisis has done WA a huge favour in making us reassess what values make the State unique. "We will emerge hopefully having learned the lessons of recent times, but it will happen again, and when it does the infrastructure of the economy based on the resources industry — all the engineers and geologists and surveyors—will get up and go to the next big thing. And if we haven't bedded down another depth to which we as West Australians can connect, we are going to be a hell of a lot poorer for it."

Buoyed by the interest Midland Atelier is garnering, she is sure the project will stoke the State economy. "I have so many young lawyers and bankers who come to me and say 'how can we contribute," she says. "Interior designers, architects and planners all want to be involved. This will be very much about cross-pollination."

Helping to sow the seeds will be Raffles Education Corporation, the largest private education group in the Asia-Pacific region, which has recently been given State Government approval for its Midland college.

Designer and academic Professor Ron Newman, who left his post as Dean of Sydney University's College of the Arts to become chief executive of Raffles College of Design and Commerce in Singapore, says there are endless collaboration opportunities. Students at Raffles University College will have access to facilities at Midland Atelier, whose designers will in turn be encouraged to teach at the university and use its excellent design library.

Midland's position in a metropolitan area on a railway line appeals to Raffles, so too the area's low rate of participation in higher education. Another bonus is that China—where the bulk of Raffles University campuses and students are — shares the same time zone with Perth, which is prompting the Singaporean educator to shake up its management structure. "We currently run our entire academic enterprise programs out of Sydney and Singapore jointly, but we do plan to relocate that to Perth," says Newman.

The university plans to have a School of Nursing, with graduates able to service the adjacent Midland Health Campus, which in turn can provide practical training programs for the university. It is hoped the alliance between Midland Atelier, Raffles and the campus will result in the design and production of new products and IP, just a small slice of the creative economy worth billions that can power industry growth, lift employment and generate positive flow-on effects to broader society.

Like Dorrington, Newman says the creative economy is critical to Perth and the nation. "Australia is fairly creative and I think Midland Atelier is a part of that huge force... a really important part of that drive to keep the country moving ahead," he says.

Though Perth may lack the population and industrial density close to the CBD that transformed the likes of New York's Soho into a cultural powerhouse, Midland Atelier will be cushioned by the health campus, with up to 500 beds and a workforce of 2500, and the university, which expects to attract 8000 students.

The last time Midland saw such activity was more than 100 years ago, when the rail workshops opened to become the area's main employer and saleyards, churches and abbatoirs sprang up around them. "The historical and industrial makeup of Midland and its surrounds means it has similar opportunities to evolve in the ways that its predecessors have," predicts Jessica Bragdon, FORM'S industry development manager, a New Yorker who called a Soho loft home before she moved to Perth last year.

Bragdon says Midland's position at the end of Perth's eastern corridor — beginning in Northbridge and winding through Mayland, Bayswater, Bassendean and beyond — means it is well situated to flourish. "This corridor is becoming increasingly desirable to the State's creative community, who choose to settle along its path, thereby adding to the unique cultural and lifestyle 'value' and cachet of the area," she says.

Freelance art and design consultant Jenny Beahan, who has worked for many years as a senior policy officer for WA's Department of Culture and Arts, agrees. Noting the growing cultural movement in and around Midland, from Swan TAPE gallery and "it's amazing coterie of artists" and similar activities in nearby Guildford, York, Northam, New Norcia and Toodyay, Beahan believes Midland Atelier is important because it places artists and designers cheek by jowl.

"Then you can get a seamless flow of ideas and collaboration, a bit like Italy, which is a big believer in inter-disciplinary collaboration," she says.

Like Kinsella, Dorrington is looking ahead, and has some advice for those short on the V-word. "Ask yourself what Bilbao was like before the Guggenheim Museum was built there, or would anyone recognise that sleepy Warwickshire market town before the Royal Shakespeare Theatre was built in Stratford, or Antwerp, without the fashion industry that came out of the academy?"

Hi Stephen/Saran,

I am not sure if you are the correct persons I need to contact.

I am a local resident of Northbridge and I would like to know whether or not myself and my partner are entitled to compensation due to the noise and disruption that this event will cause by been held on the street? We can be compensated by either complementary or heavily subsided tickets(x2). It would be good if your events company engaged the local community and invited them along to participate, to minimize complaints and ensure future events will be successful.

Transport to add to show ticket costs
BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian November 5, 2009, 6:19 am

http://l.yimg.com/fv/xp/wan/20091105/11/2536494698.jpg
WA NEWS / Lee Griffith ©

Ticket prices to several major music festivals, including the Big Day Out, could increase after a decision by the Public Transport Authority to stop subsidising the cost of extra transport for the events.

Confirming the move, which follows State Government approval in May for police to charge for officers at events, the PTA said yesterday the estimated $6 million annual cost of providing extra buses and trains at special events was not sustainable.

It has written to 24 local councils asking them to only approve events that had a transport plan, including a public transport component, ticked off by Transperth.

The policy drew outrage from concert promoters, who accused the PTA of manipulating the system to make more money.

The PTA said its crackdown would not affect community events such as the Australia Day Skyworks, Christmas Pageant, Anzac Day and the Royal Show, but was aimed at a handful of event organisers who "put profit before passenger safety".

Among the events where the PTA claimed organisers were "still expecting full taxpayer funding" were the Big Day Out, which refused to pay a $51,936 bill from this year, Soundwave, Summadayze and the recent Government-backed One Movement Festival.

PTA spokesman David Hynes said the cost of extra services for special events was not in the PTA's budget and the responsibility and cost should fall to event organisers, who charged for tickets.

"Unfortunately, a few entrepreneurs insist on maximising their returns at the expense of passenger safety and refuse to enter into an agreement with the PTA," he said.

Promoter Brad Mellen described the PTA's stance as a "ludicrous attempt at monopolisation".

He said taxpayers benefited from the events and should not have to pay the price of getting on a bus or train, regardless of the time or event.

Big Day Out organiser Ken Knight said he never expected fully taxpayer-funded transport but would not comment until he had a meeting with Transport Minister Simon O'Brien's office next week.

A spokesman for Mr O'Brien said the Minister "fully backs the PTA's position".

I wouldn't have a problem with this if the cash saved were to go into infrastructure investment of the purchase of extra buses or trains.

Yeah - sounds like they are doing the same thing as they do for WCE/Freo memberships. You have to pay for PT up-front - and then it is up to you whether you hop on the bus/train to get there.

There could be other vids for competition in that comp. Older ones would include Girls on Film, Poison by Alice Cooper (adult version), maybe Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistable by Robert Palmer, amongst others. Maybe you can start a comp Acc.

A change of speed, a change of style.
A change of scene, with no regrets,
A chance to watch, admire the distance,
Still occupied, though you forget.
Different colours, different shades,
Over each mistakes were made.
I took the blame.
Directionless so plain to see,
A loaded gun won't set you free.
So you say.

We'll share a drink and step outside,
An angry voice and one who cried,
"we'll give you everything and more,
The strain's too much, cant take much more."
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire,
Can't seem to feel it anymore.
It was me, waiting for me,
Hoping for something more,
Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else.

I won't bore you with endless New Order trivia but i've been a massive fan for (gulp) 18 years. Their final album in 2005 was rubbish though. 'Technique' was their career highpoint in 1989.

I'm quite sure the video for 'Ceremony' was made just recently, along with a video for 'Temptation' and possibly be the same director. My green 'Ceremony' T-shirt is currently missing in action.

It is interesting that EotS is a one person band now (and has been for a short time). I wonder if Luke Steele will try and get someone to join him, if he will let it fold or continue as a one man band.

I get the sense from quotes by Luke Steele that Nick Littlemore isn't even keeping HIM in the loop about his intentions, but he might just be buried in his own Pnau album (you know these obsessive artist types *cough desperaterobots cough*).

I watched an interview with them both on youtube from only 9 months ago, and Nick was saying he's with the band the whole way, so who knows. I doubt the music will be as good without him - Luke's a tad self-indulgent.

Art gallery builds a brighter future
STEPHEN BEVIS ARTS EDITOR

The economic slowdown may have clipped their wings, but private donors have tipped $5 million into the Art Gallery of WA endowment fund to buy new artworks, triggering an extra $2.5 million injection from the State Government.

The Government's total commitment now sits at $12.5 million, with another $2.5 million to follow if the TomorrowFund can raise an extra $5 million from donations.

The campaign was launched in June last year. Woodside, NAB, BHP Billiton and Wesfarmers contributed $1 million each to kickstart the effort to raise $10 million in corporate and private donations by the end of 2010.

Gallery director Stefano Carboni said the 2010 deadline was no longer realistic, though there was fresh optimism in the air.

Leading WA artist Robert Juniper was named honorary patron of the TomorrowFund at a presentation this week of its first two major acquisitions, bought for an undisclosed sum.

The new artworks are Monument #23 Slump, a 9.6m-long installation by Callum Morton, and Dale Frank's abstract painting of actor Daniel Radcliffe's "psychological profile".

Juniper said the gallery had been starved of funds over recent years but the new fund would help it buy works that would enhance the careers of many of today's artists, as had happened when the gallery bought his painting Dancers on a Wall in 1962.

"It was an important moment," he said. "It gave me the courage to dedicate myself to the life of a painter and sculptor."

Also honoured were long-tune gallery donors lan and Sue Bernadt and Kerry Stokes, the founding former chairman of the Art Gallery of WA Foundation, which administers the TomorrowFund.

Current chairwoman Marlene Stafford said the foundation's donors and supporters had bought 4000 works, or 22 per cent of the State Collection, since its inception in 1989.

Brilliant video. In case you were curious, the clip starts in London's Chinatown, then heads into Soho. One of my favourite parts of London and I'm pretty much there every week.

One of the streets he rides through is Berwick Street (the street with the markets set up), which has a really great coffee shop called flat white that's run by a couple of Kiwi guys who opened the place in 2005 when they got tired of literally not being able to get a flat white anywhere in London. One of the best places for a coffee in this city.

edit: I think the version above might be region locked to the UK. Try this if that one doesn't work.

^^ Berwick Stret is also known for its record shops. Spent a furtune down there during my years in London. I think a couple may have closed now with the upswing towards downloadable music. 'Selectadisc' was my favourite but their shop is now occupied by 'Sister Ray' I think?

I knew you'd be the first to respond to that post lol. NME TV had a selection of Ian Brown clips. It's interesting to watch the evolution from Stone Roses to his most recent solo stuff from this year. When I move back to Aus, whenever that may be, the lack of UK music on the TV of the kind that you and I are into will be something I really miss.

Yeah Sister Ray expanded. Revival Records is also there but they are second hand only. My favourite record stores are Rough Trade East, Rough Trade West, Honest Jons, Phonica and Sounds of the Universe.

Shipping to Aus from most of these is also quite reasonable. Cheaper to buy online and get records shipped to Perth instead of getting ripped off at Planet or 78s.

Miensie, you might like this song.

I don't, sorry. I could only listen to 40 seconds of it. Her voice grates.

That to me is not considered singing. Ugh.

Thanks anyway :)

It's deep, shame Timbo didn't write it though.

Now THAT deserves a banning Acc!!!

Miensie - what do you think of Sarah Blasko? I got her latest and it is pretty good. I had heard about 5-6 songs off the radio previously and have only heard the whole cd a couple of times.

I got burned by her last CD - only one good track on it, so wary about her new one.

BBC's 'Sound of Music' 2010 list should be out soon - gives a good idea of what is new and what should be big next year (they predicted Lady Gaga, Empire of the Sun, Temper Trap, La Roux, Little Boots and Florence and the Machine last year). Mind you, because it's BBC's list, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy after that...

Here's a link to last year's Tips - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/entertainment/2009/sound_of_2009/default.stm

Those two vids you posted are pretty much were music is heading in 2010. Like the BBC article suggested for this year, the trend will continue as more band move away from Indie Cool towards Electro Pop Cool.

Here's some tunes to get all of you back home into the vibe for a chilled, sunny weekend. 11 degrees and heavy showers for me lol.

I don't listen to the radio so have not heard any of her songs to be honest. I will have a listen to some of her stuff over the weekend and will let you know :)

I love Will Smith.

So I finally got around to listening to Lou Reed's ''Transformer" from start to end. I'd heard all the main songs before, but never the whole album. A true classic indeed!
