dallastexjr January 1st, 2010, 05:17 AM Bit of old school there. BF - love it. If you're a Kate Bush fan, check out Marina and the Diamonds if you haven't already.
Just listened to Silversun Pickups, tbor. The singer sounds like Chrissie Amphlett - the song is epic. Also found 'Lazy Eye' and 'Panic Switch', but 'Nice To Know You Work Alone' is better imo.
tbor January 1st, 2010, 06:37 AM Ha yep, 'Lazy Eye' is deffo a top track.
I need to swap something out of my list so i can get La Roux (Bulletproof? Tigerlilly? Quicksand?), and Philadelphia Grand Jury (Good News). Hmmmm decisions decisions.
tbor January 1st, 2010, 06:39 AM Fuk, I need some Animal Collective in there too.
BartBart January 1st, 2010, 07:58 AM Down to 15 - I might mull over these for a while and decide closer to the cutoff. (yeah - I am a precrastinator). I took Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition out because it probably won't be counted since it just fell in last year's vote.
* = will be in my top 10 (which means I have to halve the remaining 10)
Animal Collective - Bluish
Basement Jaxx - Raindrops

Blindfold January 1st, 2010, 10:06 AM Bit of old school there. BF - love it.
Admittedly I am stuck in a bit of a timewarp music-wise. Have completely lost touch with new music since I returned to Oz in 2005 because I never listen to the radio here which I find to be utterly shit at the best of times (sorry!). Hence my list consists of older established artists. I did buy the La Roux album last year which was disappointing as was Empire of the Sun. Some superb tracks on each but both Ellie Jackson's and Luke Steel's vocals tend to grate after a while.
dallastexjr January 1st, 2010, 10:40 AM Agree about commercial radio - if it's not the relentless barrage of ADHD advertisements, or the monotonous, childish dribble of the presenters, it's that to add insult to injury, most the music played is generic shite pulled from a robotic hit-making machine's arse. I have to be in the mood for Triple J too which, while offering the only true spectrum of real music, forces me to listen to a lot of credible stuff I still consider crap.
So....I go onto BBC1's Playlist, tending to avoid the 'A' list, and really only pirating stuff from the 'B' and 'C' lists so I can delete with abandon if I hate the song. I also go onto the Aria Charts every week doing the same, but pretty much avoid the US charts, which is where most the crap stems from.
I also flick through Q magazine while delayed at the airport looking for bands that might interest me, and cherry pick from Triple J's 'Unearthed Bands' website. If I could be bothered I would also visit music blogs such as the one dilaz and a few others are addicted to, but that would be one thing too much for me. This thread on SSC is a big help in finding new music.
Bottom line is, find music your own way, and only listen to your ipod when driving. It won't be long til you find new music that blows you away, while still enjoying class acts like Kate Bush, Portishead and Basement Jaxx
BartBart January 1st, 2010, 10:44 AM ^^ Especially the morning radio. Can't stand the formula of two or three presenters making crappy jokes and the forced laughter by the one(s) not making the "joke".
Dilaz89 January 1st, 2010, 01:15 PM Triple J have their fair share to useless talk. On balance though it's not comparable to commercial radio's standard crappy forumula.
BartBart January 1st, 2010, 01:30 PM I agree - JJJ haven't been immune to the morning show formula. And the promotions for their new morning presenters has been mind-numbingly bad.

Revamp to end musical
DANIEL HATCH
For a decade the Hyde Park Hotel has been the home of Perth's independent, live music scene, but that will come to an end tomorrow when the pub is shut down for renovations.
The hotel will be redeveloped by Woolworth's ALH Group — which owns 17 Perth pubs, including the Brass Monkey, the Saint, the Foundry and the Belgian Beer Cafe — at an estimated cost of $3 million.
The company would not talk about its plans but music industry representatives and pub locals said the renovations spelt the end of the pub's signature "underground" feel.
Sweet Mate Promotions manager Luke Rinaldi, who has booked bands for Saturday nights at the pub since 2000, said the Hyde Park Hotel had a unique place in WA's music culture because of its small size.
"The Hydey was really the only 200-person capacity venue that new bands could play and because it was open mid-week there were a lot of opportunities for bands to play," he said.
Musicians who have gone on to become part of famous WA music exports, including the Drones and the Kill Devil Hills, got their start in bands which played "the Hydey".
Renovation plans include demolishing the lounge bar, bistro, bottleshop and drive-through and building a much larger bottle shop. The TAB, sports bar and games lounge areas will form a new entertainment lounge and the current bar will become a bistro and courtyard. A new kitchen, storage area and toilets will be built.
Regulars Andy Vercoe and Ray Tinsdale, of Northbridge, said they were devastated the pub where they drink four to five times a week would change.
"It's like the pub from Cheers — it's your local and you know everyone," Mr Tinsdale said.
"It's a nice old pub that hasn't become yuppified and they're going to change it to be like every other pub around here."
The writing has been on the wall for live music at the hotel since 2007 when ALH announced via email that noise complaints from local residents had forced the venue to cancel all amplified music.
After 27 years at the pub, the Perth Jazz Society left to find a new home before then arts minister Sheila McHale threatened to lobby Woolworths' senior management and the company backed down.
Woolworth's purchased ALH in October 2004 for $1.3 billion.
Its portfolio then included 132 pubs and 262 bottle shops across Australia.
Another famous home of local live music, the Grosvenor, closed in 2002.
Inner city pubs help musos cut their teeth
SIMON COLLINS
With its counter meals, pool tables, jukebox and modest interior, the Hyde Park Hotel may seem out of step with a Perth pub scene buzzing with new small bars and flash beer gardens.
While it could undoubtedly benefit from a facelift, the North Perth pub known affectionately as "the Hydey" has been a fertile breeding ground for local talent.
A gig in the Hyde Park Hotel's front bar has represented an important first step out of the rehearsal room for bands that continued on to national acclaim, such as Little Birdy, Gyroscope, the Panics and Snowman.
If its owners, Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group, pulled the plug on live music at the Hyde Park for good, the Perth music scene would lose a beloved venue and the inner-city live music circuit would be down to a mere handful of small rooms.
Bands and promoters would be forced to choose between North-bridge's rowdy Rocket Room and rundown East Perth punk venue the Castle — or attempt to fill bigger venues such as the Rosemount Hotel, the Civic Hotel and Amplifier.
Despite this shortage of inner-city venues, the local music scene has never been more vibrant, with cafes and art galleries also hosting gigs.
Fremantle boasts a surfeit of original music venues, including the Norfolk Hotel, Mojo's Bar, Clancy's Fish Pub and the Fly by Night Club.
John Butler's manager, Philip Stevens, wonders where the next generation of Perth rock stars will cut their teeth if there are no small venues such as the Hyde Park Hotel. "Venues come and go, but they are the engine room of talent development," he said.
acc521 January 2nd, 2010, 12:45 PM Such a shame. My brother saw the Temper Trap as a little unknown band there two years ago when they were supporting for Howling Bells.
Enter, generic gastropub. It'll be a nice place to hang out and will be popular, but will be no different from the Queens or The Brissie et al.
It's a shame because this doesn't have to be the case. For example there is a Pizza Express (chain that is absolutely everywhere) in Soho that has a jazz bar in the basement level. No-one believed that the concept would work but it's actually built a reputation over the past few years as one of the better jazz bars in London. Woolies should do the same thing with the Hydey - retain a room that is specifically about supporting local musicians.
Dilaz89 January 2nd, 2010, 01:02 PM Woolies wouldn't have a clue. They'll just employ some faggy consultants to metrofy the place up. Looks nice but has no soul.
There is a live music venue opening up on William street next door to Kakulas. The bloke behind it has just secured a tavern license.
acc521 January 2nd, 2010, 01:07 PM Nice. The Tavern license still kicks the ass off the small bar license if one can get it.
Dimethyltryptamine January 3rd, 2010, 07:55 AM Love the Owl City album.
Nate Von Longneck II January 3rd, 2010, 08:44 AM The Hyde Park died in 2004, it happened almost overnight when ALH bought the place from Paul Higgins, one of the nicest guys you would ever meet.
..and that article is sloppy, Dan Hatch. In the first sentence, it mentions "for a decade". Further down "27 years". The writing has been on the wall since 2004. Noise complaints came many times prior to 2007, it was just an excuse for ALH to get the place to close quicker, so they can turn it into a Dan Murphy's. You'll see.
I played over a hundred gigs there, as a DJ, between 97 and 2000. During that time, we had the best DJ's on earth play, on a Monday night, with free entry. Touring DJ's from around Australia and internationally would come down, and play for free. This is no exaggeration - we literally had world champion DJ's. We never, ever, charged entry.
Australian hip hop crews such as Downsyde, and Drapht, got their start at the Hyde Park Hotel. They were regulars to my Monday night gig's.
Over the other side of the pub, the Jazz crew had their monday nights as well. I couldn't count the number of world famous jazz musicians I saw at the Hydey.
On Wednesday nights (I had a rare groove gig their with two other mates for a few months), Paul Higgins, owner, would put on a "free meal with every middy" night. Yes, a free meal with every glass of beer. It was really just an excuse to feed people who may not have been able to afford it otherwise.
Nobody was ever refused entry based on appearance, ever.
We even had the odd guest celebrities from Hollywood, mingling amongst the scruffy locals, and world class entertainment. It was a well known Monday night for sure.
There is no place like that in Perth anymore, its quite sad to think about.
On another note, please remember that I have mentioned many, many times on here before about the certain death of Northbridge as we know it, due to government intervention (such as increased rents/forced gentrification).
Once Northbridge is gone, Perth will change forever, for the worse (yes, just my opinion).
We really, really, really need the council and government bodies to stop fucking up this city.
BartBart January 3rd, 2010, 09:27 AM ^^ How do you stop gentrification of inner city areas when the price of properties increase as time goes by (and population licreases)? Obviously one of the problems has (of recent-ish times) been being able to have one person complain about noise in effect shut down a venue.
btw - it is good to hear people's personal experience in these sort of issues.
Nate Von Longneck II January 3rd, 2010, 09:54 AM ^^ How do you stop gentrification of inner city areas when the price of properties increase as time goes by (and population licreases)? Obviously one of the problems has (of recent-ish times) been being able to have one person complain about noise in effect shut down a venue.

Yes, the price of properties increases over time, organic gentrification.
However, when the council/epra/govt decides to rejuvenate larger sections of the city, such as William St and various laneways, there will be massive increases in rents in a much shorter period of time. You can't rely upon these bodies to artifically create diversity/vibrancy/choice - just look at the track record. I think they should stick to new, undeveloped areas (such as East Perth Power Station), and leave Northbridge to develop by its own accord.
But, shit happens, things change. We all know that. Its about managing the change for the best possible outcome, and thats not happening.
..oh yeah, I live right near Villa nightclub. Occassionally, the patrons give me cause to complain. However, I am so aware that my one complaint could lead to the place being shut down, so I don't complain.
BartBart January 3rd, 2010, 10:03 AM I guess it comes down to who you (or whoever) complain to. Mentioning something to the owner/manager would probably not count as a complaint - as opposed to going through official channels.
Nate Von Longneck II January 3rd, 2010, 10:16 AM ^^
agree!
BartBart January 3rd, 2010, 10:45 AM I think it often comes down to some people wanting to close down a venue because they see it as possibly increasing the value of their property.
city_thing January 3rd, 2010, 12:15 PM I can't believe they're closing the Hydey. I spent hundreds of nights there, on all sorts of substances. The toilets were the foulest I've ever seen, without a doubt.
On the final night of private ownership (after woolies had bought them out), the managers just gave all the booze away for free. All these bands turned up and played, seemingly hundreds of 'hipsters' from the inner north poured in, it was one of the greatest nights of my life  - it's shit like that which makes me miss Perth. I miss going into indie bars and always bumping into people I knew.
And now it's just going to be another version of the Brisbane. Meh. In reality in died years ago when they were bought out, all of Perth's best music venues seemed to lose credibility at that time too.
Dimethyltryptamine January 3rd, 2010, 01:08 PM Just got back from watching Sherlock Holmes -- awesome movie! Seemed as if time flew and didn't look at the time once. Lot of witty humor and plenty of "one-liners". Was also quite action packed with a good look at how London was in its hay-day. Definitely recommend it ;)
Ipggi January 3rd, 2010, 05:09 PM Common I know you guys are sad about the Hyde but that is the nature of the industry. Nothing lasts forever and I don't know why people expected little Hype Park Hotel Perth to be any different?
acc521 January 3rd, 2010, 05:38 PM The problem with Perth is that when these sort of places close, there doesn't seem to be anything that opens to ''take their place''. All cities have gentrification occur, but the "cool spots" always pop up somewhere else dodgy, which becomes cool, which becomes gentrified and so on. Perth doesn't have enough inner city space and it is all becoming gentrified.

Blindfold January 5th, 2010, 01:04 AM ^^ But that's the video for "Stop me if you think you've heard this one before". Someone at Revolver is playing silly buggers. "There is a light..." has a completely different video.

I believe fail is the term.
At least the original is funny in hindsight as a typical 80s ballad. With all the 80s-ness removed, what's the point?

dallastexjr January 9th, 2010, 03:16 AM The 80's produced some mega hits, but I have oftened preferred the less played followup singles. Here are just a few of my favourites...
Foreigner's 'That Was Yesterday', followed 'I Want To Know What Love Is' (good live version, dodgy tambourine playing)

Robert Palmer's 'Addicted To Love' was, and still is, murdered by radio. I prefer the followup single 'I Didn't Mean To Turn You On' (annoying first 40 seconds of 'extended mix')

I dug you up this morning and took you home.
To have you here beside me cold but close,
I made my mind up last night that heaven just can’t have you.
I made you breakfast but you would not eat,
So I took your black dress off and washed you clean.
I made my mind up last night that heaven just can’t have you.
The sheets are creased from your last day,
A silhouette of where you lay.
They’ll find your headstone in the yard with your black dress and my guitar.
I’ll carry you back to your grave where you and I will always stay.
I close the casket, it gets dark, they’ll find us in each others arms.

Nothing but conversations and suspense in this movie - probably one of my favourite movies in recent years. I felt exactly how I imagine the main character to have felt in that film. Starts off slow, but just draws you in. Very, very excellent film. It's by Michael Haneke, who won the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival for ''The White Ribbon'' which I also want to see.

It all Boyles down to PR spin
By Simon Collins, Music Editor January 14th, 2010, 2:32 pm
The world's music critics were unusually united in declaring New York indie-rock band Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion the best album of 2009.
However, despite the almost universal acclaim, the album sold fewer than 8000 copies in Australia since its release last January - a drop in the ocean compared with withto the highest seller of the year, Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream, which shifted a mind-boggling 600,000 units since being unleashed on November 23.
The West Australian's Thursday liftout The Wire named Merriweather Post Pavilion the platter that mattered most, as did the cooler-than-thou Chicago-based music website Pitchfork. Metacritic, an online hub that collates reviews from major US and British publications found that Merriweather Post Pavilion was the best reviewed album of the year, scoring a staggering average of 89 per cent.
But while we critics voted for Animal Collective with our keyboards, the public cast their vote via their wallets, with music buyers in Britain and Australia overwhelmingly making cat-loving Scottish charity worker turned songstress Boyle's effort their favourite disc for 2009.
US fans preferred only cutesy Taylor Swift's album, Fearless, to I Dreamed a Dream, which still sold more than 2.5 million units in the States.
Boyle, the runner-up on television show Britain's Got Talent, has broken all sorts of chart sales records, including being the only artist to sell more than 100,000 copies in a week twice in Australia and also selling the most albums in one week here - Boyle's 165,000 in the week leading up to Christmas eclipsed Guy Sebastian's record of 163,000 for his debut album, Just As I Am, in 2003.
Despite the mammoth popularity of the collection of covers, music reviewers gave the bushy-browed church choir and pub karaoke warbler turned record company darling the middling mark of 57 per cent for I Dreamed a Dream, according to Metacritic.
So, who's right? Are elitist critics out of touch with the music connecting with the masses? Or are the latter just a bunch of sheep easily led by high-rating television shows and wall-to-wall publicity?
I will go out on a limb and suggest - to quote Bart Simpson - that it's a little of column A and a little of column B.
Looking past Boyle, according to the Australasian Recording Industry Association the rest of the top five-selling albums in Australia last year came, in order, from Pink (Funhouse), the Black Eyed Peas (The E.N.D.), Taylor Swift (Fearless) and Lily Allen (It's Not Me, It's You).
Apart from Allen's above-average album of feisty pop, the rest - commercial radio rock for bogans, hip-hop ringtones and squeaky clean country pop - are anathema to your garden variety critic.
Of the 40 best-selling CDs of 2009, only Sarah Blasko's superb As Day Follows Night makes my own Top 10 - and it came in way down at No. 39 on ARIA's list. The Sydney singer-songwriter is a rare creature; an artist who attracts critical acclaim and relatively impressive sales - her latest album makes it three out of three platinum releases in this country.
Even so, Blasko's 70,000-plus sales for As Day Follows Night seem paltry compared with Boyle's chart dominance.
So, as the 4 Non Blondes once asked, what's going on?
The simplest and probably most correct answer is that despite Boyle's performances on Britain's Got Talent not being beamed into Australian living rooms, her company Sony Music created a storm of publicity for her.
Her "journey" - a term oft-used on Australian Idol, another sales juggernaut - connected with the public to the point where people who don't usually buy CDs made an effort to buy a copy or two.
Boyle's ugly duckling story was hardly new, not even on Britain's Got Talent. The inaugural winner on the British series in 2007 was Paul Potts, an amateur opera singer sold to viewers as a gormless mobile phone salesman who just happened to possess an incredible voice.
Both against-the-odds tales were initially sold to the world via YouTube, with record companies and TV stations pretending the whole shebang was driven by fans.
There's no doubt that Boyle and Potts' stories capture the imagination far more readily than that of Animal Collective, who met at school in Baltimore, Maryland, formed a band, moved to New York and made excellent, inventive music.
Yet, despite the romance driving Boyle's success, wild horses could not drag me to listen to I Dreamed a Dream again.
I think I'll throw up if I hear the 48-year-old strip all of Mick and Keef's ragged glory out of Wild Horses.
The sales of Boyle's debut - and the albums from Potts and almost every Idol alumni - represent the triumph of mediocrity.
Speaking of which, Robbie Williams once sang (but didn't write); "You can't argue with popularity - well, you could but you'd be wrong". So I won't argue with Boyle's sudden popularity, nor will I condemn those who have bought - and probably heartily enjoy - I Dreamed a Dream.
But I will lock myself away in the ivory tower with all the other critics to enjoy brilliant records from artists whose "journey" is along the high road of creating original, stimulating and occasionally challenging music rather than covering classics in a sugary glaze.
And I shall not cheer when Boyle's 15 minutes of fame elapse; I know that the music marketing machine already have the next irksome superstar story on the boil.
Dilaz89 January 17th, 2010, 08:26 AM plus one to that!
deranged January 17th, 2010, 09:29 AM Liked the last few paragraphs, but otherwise insipid critical acclaim vs popularity arguments.
People who equate popularity with either quality or lack of quality are both sheep.
Apart from Allen's above-average album of feisty pop, the rest [...] are anathema to your garden variety critic.
Metacritic scores:
I Dreamed a Dream - 57
Funhouse - 69
The END - 60
Fearless - 73

Taggers turn cycle path vandalism into art
FLIP PRIOR
A group of would-be taggers given the chance to channel their energies into creative expression have helped turn a boring Bayswater cycle path into a 250m-long riot of colour.
Fed up with the constant scrawling on the path's retaining wall, which runs parallel to the train line from Bayswater station to Tonkin Highway, Bayswater City Council mayor Terry Kenyon commissioned a public art project to engage young people.
Abnormal Design artists Drew Skater and Michael Barker, also knows as Shime, rounded up 12 people from hangouts and shopping centres, gave them paint and schooled them in the art of graffiti.
Barker, an urban artist since 1984, said the project took several months to complete and gave young taggers an avenue to explore what was possible.
"Instead of going around making a mess they can, if they put some time and effort into it, with guidance, produce actual works instead of trying to do something on the run," he said.
Abnormal Design was also working with the Public Transport Authority to create murals in Kenwick, Gosnells and Cannington in an attempt to combat vandalism, Barker said. "A government department, which is usually so rigid, coming up with an idea to reduce graffiti by putting murals up is pretty amazing, I think," he said.

Sections of our arts community shone in the Noughties yet
Dazzling acts few and far between
STEPHEN BEVIS ARTS EDITOR
2000->2009 DEFINING A DECADE
Arts lovers were buzzing despite the oppressive heat at the University of WA's Sunken Gardens late in November 1999 as artistic director Sean Doran unveiled a heady line-up for the first of his four "millennium celebration" Festivals.
The Irish-born Mr Doran had come to Perth primed to blow off the cobwebs for the 2000 Perth International Arts Festival after the 23-year run of his predecessor, David Blenkinsop. His innovations included more free events5 a bigger writers' festival, the Watershed contemporary music venue and lavish productions like The Peony Pavilion, The Netherlands Dance Theatre, The Angel Project and Shockheaded Peter.
The festivities began with the Australia Day fireworks and Philip Glass, Robert Wilson, Deborah Warner and Romeo Castelluci were among the big names involved hi its spectacular artistic success. By the time the party ended three weeks later, however, the Festival was left with a $2.7 million hangover.
The deficit overshadowed the artistic strength of Mr Doran's next three Festivals as the UWA clawed back the losses and entrenched a culture of restraint which ensured the Festivals of his successors, Lindy Hume and Shelagh Magadza, were comparatively modest affairs.
A more positive legacy from Mr Doran's time was an acceptance that Perth was part of the international arts scene and that taking the arts outdoors made great sense in one of the world's driest summer capitals.
That 2000 Festival marked the expansion of the outdoor film season from the Somerville to Joondalup.
Before too long, film audiences also were tucking into chardormay and chicken wings under the stars in Kings Park, Burswood Park, Mosrnan Park and beyond.
The decade also marked an outdoors-led recovery for the State's biggest performing arts company, the WA Symphony Orchestra. Back in 2000, WASO faced the bleak reality of shrinking ticket sales and a $2 million debt but began to cultivate younger audiences and woo new sponsors with a series of pop-fusion concerts in Kings Park as part of a more adventurous programming mix.
Another popular event to take advantage of Perth's open-air lifestyle was Cottesloe's Sculpture by the Sea in which dozens of sculpted forms competed for attention with the bronzed bodies on the white sands of Perth's iconic summer playground. The concept moved to Perth from Sydney in 2005 and helped broaden the appeal of local sculptors, several of whom took their work to Copenhagen in 2009 as Sculpture by the Sea was presented overseas for the first time.
Out in the sands of the Western Desert, another glittering contemporary art movement was tapping into a 40,000 year-old tradition. Art centres sprang up in remote settlements across the continent, providing much-needed income for the often elderly artists and their communities, as Aboriginal art was propelled into an international industry worth $300 million a year.
Clouding this silver lining, however, were claims of fraud and unethical treatment of artists by unscrupulous private dealers or "carpetbaggers". A 2007 Senate inquiry led to a belated voluntary code of conduct and other measures intended to curb their influence but the jury remains out on their efficacy.
The Noughties art boom saw record auction prices set for "trophy" works by Australian artists like John Brack, Brett Whiteley and Fred Williams.
While sales of famous paintings usually grabbed the headlines, a digital video of a man skateboarding at Bondi crystallised another trend by selling for $84,000 at a Sotheby's auction in Melbourne in 2007. Shaun Gladwell's DVD installation Storm Sequence 2000 shows the artist on his skateboard in slow motion with a stormy Bondi seascape as a backdrop. It was the first artwork of its kind to be auctioned in Australia and confirmed that the face of art was now fleshed out with pixels and megabytes.
The decade that gave us the iPod, reality-TV, MySpace and YouTube also democratised creativity and facilitated an explosion of self-expression. Cheaper hardware, super-charged software and the global reach of the internet enabled artists to bypass galleries, theatres and concert halls to find new audiences.
Everyone had the means to be an artist — but everyone could be a critic, too. Almost overnight, it seemed we were living in a world in which bloggers and tweeters were delivering their pithy prognostications to anyone who cared to log on.
Finding increasing common ground between art and science over this time were members of UWA's biological art lab SymbioticA and the WA "aquanaut" artist Sarah Jane Pell, who was invited by NASA to bring her lateral thinking to its experiments in artificial environments.
In 2008, widespread outrage over artist Bill Henson's Sydney exhibition of photographs of a nude 13-year-old girl highlighted community concerns about the sexualisation of children in art, commerce and the media.
The digital age also brought the world's elite performers to our doorstep as London's National Theatre and opera houses like the New York Met and La Scala began high-definition broadcasts to cinemas worldwide, winning audiences with their crystal-clear sound, perfect pictures and choc-bomb informality.
WA Opera (Batavia, Tristan und Isolde, The Love of the Nightingale) and WA Ballet (Carmen, La Boheme, The Taming of the Shrew) had many high points over the decade.
However, the local theatre scene was struggling to recover from losing a generation of theatre-goers after the collapse of State Theatre Company in the early 1990s. The Black Swan and Perth Theatre companies struggled to fill the gap but battled against shoestring budgets, inadequate venues and the rise and rise of multiplex cinemas and home theatres where people got their dramatic fixes from DVD box sets of American pay-TV shows like The Wire, The Sopranos and Deadwood. . At the Burswood Theatre and other venues around the country, the jukebox musical went into high rotation as producers squared off their steep costs against the pulling power of catchy back catalogues and against-the-odds plotlines of shows like Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You, Dusty, The Boy From Oz and Shout!
But many other big musicals failed to head west as promoters bemoaned Perth's lack of a purpose-built lyric theatre that could give them the economies of scale to make it worth crossing the Nullarbor. The Burswood Theatre was deemed too big and His Majesty's Theatre too small.
This was the tip of the iceberg in an ocean of frustrated ambitions for Perth arts lovers who had watched other cities, particularly Brisbane and Melbourne, invest in their cultural facilities as WA politicians dithered. After the mother of all economic booms, the decade was one of largely missed opportunities.
True, a new $91 million theatre centre, the long-promised replacement for the Playhouse Theatre, is finally taking shape in Northbridge and the $480 million Perth Arena is intended to replace the Burswood Dome in 2012. Yet in many ways the decade ended as it began: with the WA Museum still awaiting redevelopment, the Art Gallery of WA urgently in need of a revamp and the WASO and WA Ballet still looking for a new home.

Camera-shy Banksy to appear on film at last
Sundance premier for reclusive street artist's film debut
By Chris Green
Friday, 22 January 2010
http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00302/Pg-09-bansky_302349t.jpg
A still from Exit Through the Gift Shop, which will be premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on Sunday
He started out by spraying his provocative images onto walls and under bridges in the middle of the night, leaving the public to puzzle over them in the morning.
People liked his work so much that he began selling it at exhibitions, where he soon attracted celebrity buyers including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Then he published a book of his collected work, copies of which now adorn countless British coffee tables.
Now, the graffiti artist Banksy is to take the commercialisation of his street art to the next level, directing a feature-length film which will make its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.
The documentary film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, is being billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie". It is directed by Banksy – whose true identity has long been a mystery – and narrated by the Welsh actor Rhys Ifans.
In a press release issued by the festival, which is being held in Park City, Utah, Banksy was quoted as saying: "It's the story of how one man set out to film the unfilmable. And failed."
John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, described the film as "part personal journey and part expose on the art world, with its mind-altering mix of hot air and hype".
He said: "Exit Through The Gift Shop is one of those films that comes along once in a great while, a warped hybrid of reality and self-induced fiction while at the same time a totally entertaining experience. The story is so bizarre I began to question if it could even be real... but in the end I didn't care. I feel bad I won't be able to shake the filmmaker's hand and tell him how much I love this film. I think I will shake everyone's hand that day and hope I hit on Banksy somewhere. I love his work in all forms."
The film tells the story of an eccentric French shopkeeper called Terry Guetta, who decides to make a documentary about the shady world of street art and his attempts to find and befriend Banksy – only to have the artist turn the camera back on him when he eventually succeeds.
In a characteristically cryptic statement issued through his publicist Jo Brooks, Banksy said: "It's a film about a man who tried to make a film about me. Everything in it is true, especially the bits where we all lie."
The film includes footage of many of the world's most famous graffiti artists at work, and has interviews with Shepard Fairey and Invader as well as Banksy himself. It will be the first time that the elusive artist, who has long remained anonymous to avoid being prosecuted by the police, has been heard speaking. It is due to open in British cinemas on 5 March.
The film was omitted from the official Sundance programme, and its inclusion remained a closely-guarded secret until yesterday. The announcement prompted some to speculate that Banksy will use the film to reveal his true identity, but given his past this seems unlikely.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE
CLOSING NIGHT
Hypnotic are a happening nine-piece who combine the urgency of hip-hop, the heritage of jazz and the soul of Chicago. Totally natural, they don't employ amps or electricity, just horns, drums and a whole lot of energy.
Comprised of eight brothers – sons of esteemed jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran – the band take elements from all styles to make music that speaks to and for their generation. They've toured with Mos Def, Blur and Erykah Badu and set the North Sea Jazz Festival alight with their hot hooks.
Closing Night continues with world renowned UK DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson on the decks.
PRE-SHOW ENTERTAINMENT
JUDITH LANIGAN'S THE DYING SWAN
The Dying Swan is a hula hoop act based on the famous 20th-century ballet. Using hoop skills learned at the Moscow State Circus School and contemporary clown techniques, Judith has performed the amazing show at festivals worldwide.
AFTER PARTY
GILLES PETERSON
Music lover, record collector, DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson is famous for his genre-exploding radio shows on BBC Radio 1 (and 17 other stations around the world). Gilles' insatiable appetite for new music lies at the heart of his success – and global demand for his DJ sets is at an all-time high.

I was rooting for Art v Science and Phoenix but it was always going to be Mumford & Sons. Apparently it had the biggest margin between it and the number 2 of any other countdown...though I guess that's influence by the number of total votes.

Sanj February 1st, 2010, 04:53 AM acc u caught up with nik weston yet? his label is starting to get a fair bit of underground recognition and he is HIGHLY respected in a lot of circles. he'll seriously get u onto some awesome events and parties etc that might otherwise be hard to find out about.
he's known to have one of the best collection of japan only releases outside of japan and he's also the agent for especial records.
i think he plays a free gig at some gallery on sundays (according to his facebook) so maybe u could see him then, definitely worth checking out. he does an internet radio show called forwards backwards, his early shows around 2004 were a huge influence on me musically at the time. awesome dude as well.

ForwardsBackwards show no. 88

Forwards.Backwards
with Nik Weston & Nigel Prankster
(UK)
The forwardsbackwards show is the brainchild of Nigel prankster (3hedz) and Nik Weston (mukatsuku records).
Both are well respected Dj's in the UK who have travelled extensively to bring their eclectic brand of underground dance music (everything from funk , soul, Nu Jazz, Hip hop, bossa, techno, folk and everything between) to an ever expanding worldwide audience. They'll be showcasing the best upfront nu music coming from the States, the UK, Europe, Australasia and of course Japan, where 'Nippon' Nik is a frequent visitor and a champion of the sights and sounds from the land of the rising sun.
Listen in for plenty of japanese exclusives!!!!
You'll also get plenty of old skool gems that'll take you back to where it all came from, so don't be suprised to find the likes of Newban, Quartette tres bien, Model 500 and Benny Galson rubbing shoulders with nu skool music from karizma, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Moodyman and Owusu & Hannibal.
If you're in London, catch Nik playing at his regular night 'Onwards International' in London's west end and also frequently Djing alongside for some of the musical great's at the Jazz cafe, Camden.
You can catch Nigel spinning at his regular Big Chill Bar slot in trendy 'Brick Lane, East London.

u can listen to forwards backwards on www.danceandsoul.com and also www.milkaudio.com . this one show has had a massive influence on quite a few of us musically, especially the first 10 or so shows around 2004/2005
it's worth checking out a few of the other shows on danceandsoul as well, especially dean's, which is public nuisance. he is up to show 57 on soundcloud but hasnt updated his website yet so it is still 56 on there.

Celebrating a decade of art for art's sake

WA philanthropist Janet Holmes a Court has acquired more than 150 weird and wonderful pieces of art since she opened the doors of the Holmes a Court Gallery 10 years ago.
To celebrate a decade of staging eclectic and far-reaching exhibitions, the gallery's 70th show Ten, which opens tomorrow, will feature some of the pieces in her personal collection.
"I'm quite amazed that it is 10 years because it seems like yesterday, so I got quite a shock when I realised," she said. "It seems like a lot of art has passed through the gallery in that time and it has been quite an exciting time for us.
"Unfortunately we can't fit everything in but we had fun selecting the pieces."
Mrs Holmes a Court said although her taste was "totally eclectic" there was a pattern to her art purchases.
"Because I always wanted to have a gallery and now I do, when I buy works I buy ones I think will fit with a group of other works to make an exhibition or works that fill in gaps in the story of an artist's development," she said. "There's fantastic work I'm really mad about by Clyde McGill, one of our artists in residence, a wonderful portrait of a child by Rachel Coad and there's a couple of wonderful works by Nora Holland, an Aboriginal woman from Warburton."
While the anniversary has been an important milestone for Mrs Holmes a Court, the gallery won't be celebrating another decade at its East Perth premises.
The building owner intends to convert it into apartments, so the gallery is looking for a new home. Ten runs until April 11.
acc521 February 11th, 2010, 02:16 AM A good council would give the developer an incentive to incorporate a gallery space in the apartment building.
samboy February 11th, 2010, 02:21 AM you must have taken the wrong turn somewhere mate. nothing to see here.
Sanj February 11th, 2010, 02:36 AM A good council would give the developer an incentive to incorporate a gallery space in the apartment building.
i doubt the building will be redeveloped as it is less than 10 years old, more likely the gallery will be converted into an apartment. i dont see what incentive the council could give in this case, even if they wanted to.
can any planning nerds shed light on this? am i right?
Nate Von Longneck II February 11th, 2010, 06:01 AM Went to see RZA last night at Villa... great show.
At about 6pm, I could hear the sound check, so walked down to Villa, and just walked inside and watched RZA fucking around for an hour or so.
Found the manager, told him I was a *very* local resident... we had a chat about noise/complaints from the neighbourhood, and then he was kind enough to give me a couple of free tickets... his exact words were "oh yeah, we look after the local residents"...
..apparently Villa have had a few complaints lately...
Anyway, my thirties are fading, and I'm still hitting up wu tang gigs at clubs on a Wednesday night.
Its like time has stood still (in a good way)..
Sanj February 11th, 2010, 06:09 AM nice work. i had to get up at 4am for a soccer game and had to work late so couldnt do that and RZA last night. doing bukem next thursday though which is rare for me on a school night.
what was villa like? who is managing it?

A guy named Simon was the manager.
Villa was good - sound system was great, they have actually done an amazing job at sound proofing the place....for how loud it is inside, you hear nothing but the faintest bit up bass outside. Good venue for a hip hop gig.
Drinks were a rip, but to be expected in a club - $10 for a Becks, $12 for a spirits.
I will be back... hopefully in about two weeks to see Raekwon the Chef!
acc521 February 11th, 2010, 09:33 AM Good stuff Nate!
acc521 February 11th, 2010, 09:36 AM If it's just a redevelopment than agreed.
It would be interesting to brainstorm some ideas for incentives in such cases. There must be some innovative thoughts out there.
Nate Von Longneck II February 11th, 2010, 09:38 AM Thanks guys...
I would just add, RZA is one of the most important people in the history of music.
He made this point many times last night... "if you're not having fun in life, you're wasting your time"...
He also added such pearls of wisdom: "roll that shit light that shit smoke that shit", and "all I want to do is drink, smoke, and fuck".
Genious.
acc521 February 11th, 2010, 09:41 AM Those 'pearls of wisdom' indicate that he is indeed having fun in life lol. Is it obligatory that weed must get a mention in every rap gig?
Nate, what did you think of the Afro Samurai soundtrack? I loved it.
Sanj February 13th, 2010, 05:00 AM an old mix by perth's best house dj james a from a few years ago.
This is a DJ mix I did one morning for a good buddy of mine who is right into his hip hop/broken beat/soul/disco/and at the time, also drum & bass. There's some hard to find gems on this mix, b-sides, and the like. My favourite track on this mix has to be the joint "Keep On" by D-Train, just a superb slice of soulful disco!
This mix was originally only ever given to 3 people, however I think it's been long enough now to allow it to be downloaded by anyone. Mad shouts to my boys Illy Philly & Dave "Dubby-dubz" Clark!
http://soundcloud.com/james_a/beats-buds-volume-1
yes im willing to fight anyone who says there is a better house dj in perth. some of james' sets at deep city at around perth around 2001-2004 were nothing short of amazing. this mix is a lot more varied though and ive actually only just started listening to it.
dallastexjr February 15th, 2010, 02:16 PM My favourite song this week, with the best lyric: "And I want to know what happened to your boyfriend, 'cos he was looking at me like, Woah!" Great vocal switch between tenor and falsetto, and the lyrics beautifully indecipherable.

Week 17: Philly Soul / Philly Disco
So back in the 1960s you had Soul music—a terribly vague term encompassing a lot of things, but a designation that still gets used nonetheless. The industry was pretty fragmented during this pre-internet era, and pretty much every major city with a sizeable African-American population—Detroit, Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans, etc.—had a distinct local scene and sound. Philadelphia was no exception.
The Philly sound, pioneered by songwriter/producers like Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Ron Baker, Gamble & Huff, and McFadden & Whitehead, really came into its own in the mid-late 1960s, and was a marked contrast to the Motown sound that had typified the previous decade. Philly soul was more mature, more lyrically complex, less saccharine, and a lot bigger: horn sections, string sections, and even full-on orchestras took a front-and-center role in the Philly sound.
Philly continued to dominate soul music into the 1970s, giving the world acts like Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, The Delfonics, and The O'Jays. Around 1974, Philly producers started moving in a more dance-oriented direction; beefing up the kick drum in their records, focusing more on the bass line, and creating longer songs geared for the dancefloor. This was the birth of disco.
As the rest of the world moved on, inventing countless good and bad disco sub-genres, Philly kept its distinctive sound: pulsating, dancefloor-friendly records driven by big bass and lush string arrangements. This week's mixtape is a two-parter: a side of the earlier soul stuff, followed up by a good chunk of proper classic Philly disco.

eugenius February 18th, 2010, 10:50 AM Went to see British Sea Power at the Becks Music Box last night. Asked the barmaids how long the band were going to be on for - they said 8 till 10 (no warm up band) and then if people stick around there is a DJ till 12.
The band were really good but it was no where near full, and for some reason plenty of people seemed to have left before the end. Then as soon as the band finished most people left - within 5 mins of the band finishing there were probably 50 people still there, and 20 of them were staff. Should have been a great night, but ended up leaving there as it was empty and walking into Northbridge before I found anywhere else with even a little bit of life around! So frustrating that there is so little night life in the City during the week (in fact at any time other than a friday night).

MY band is famous for music videos. We direct them ourselves or with the help of friends, we shoot them on shoestring budgets and, like our songs, albums and concerts, we see them as creative works and not as our record company’s marketing tool.
In 2006 we made a video of us dancing on treadmills for our song “Here It Goes Again.” We shot it at my sister’s house without telling EMI, our record company, and posted it on the fledgling YouTube without EMI’s permission. Technically, this put us afoul of our contract, since we need our record company’s approval to distribute copies of the songs that they finance. It also exposed YouTube to all sorts of liability for streaming an EMI recording across the globe. But back then record companies saw videos as advertisements, so if my band wanted to produce them, and if YouTube wanted to help people watch them, EMI wasn’t going to get in the way.
As the age of viral video dawned, “Here It Goes Again” was viewed millions, then tens of millions of times. It brought big crowds to our concerts on five continents, and by the time we returned to the studio, 700 shows, one Grammy and nearly three years later, EMI’s ledger had a black number in our column. To the band, “Here It Goes Again” was a successful creative project. To the record company, it was a successful, completely free advertisement.
Now we’ve released a new album and a couple of new videos. But the fans and bloggers who helped spread “Here It Goes Again” across the Internet can no longer do what they did before, because our record company has blocked them from embedding our video on their sites. Believe it or not, in the four years since our treadmill dance got such attention, YouTube and EMI have actually made it harder to share our videos.
A few years ago, reeling from plummeting record sales, record companies went after YouTube, demanding payment for streams of their material. They saw videos, suddenly, as potential sources of revenue. YouTube agreed to pay the record companies a tiny amount for each stream, but — here’s the crux of the problem — they pay only when the videos are viewed on YouTube’s own site.
Embedded videos — those hosted by YouTube but streamed on blogs and other Web sites — don’t generate any revenue for record companies, so EMI disabled the embedding feature. Now we can’t post the YouTube versions of our videos on our own site, nor can our fans post them on theirs. If you want to watch them, you have to do so on YouTube.
But this isn’t how the Internet works. Viral content doesn’t spread just from primary sources like YouTube or Flickr. Blogs, Web sites and video aggregators serve as cultural curators, daily collecting the items that will interest their audiences the most. By ignoring the power of these tastemakers, our record company is cutting off its nose to spite its face.
The numbers are shocking: When EMI disabled the embedding feature, views of our treadmill video dropped 90 percent, from about 10,000 per day to just over 1,000. Our last royalty statement from the label, which covered six months of streams, shows a whopping $27.77 credit to our account.
Clearly the embedding restriction is bad news for our band, but is it worth it for EMI? The terms of YouTube’s deals with record companies aren’t public, but news reports say that the labels receive $.004 to $.008 per stream, so the most EMI could have grossed for the streams in question is a little over $5,400.
It’s decisions like these that have earned record companies a reputation for being greedy and short-sighted. And by and large they deserve it. But before we cheer for the demise of the big bad machine, it’s important to remember that record companies provide the music industry with a vital service: they’re risk aggregators. Or at least, they used to be.
To go from playing at a local club once a month to actually supporting yourself with music requires big investments in touring, recording and promotion — investments young musicians can’t afford. My band didn’t sign a contract with EMI because we believed labels magically created stars. We signed because no banker in his right mind would give a band the startup capital it needs.
Record companies, on the other hand, didn’t used to expect that all their advances would be repaid. They spread the risk by betting on hundreds of artists at once, and they recouped their investments by taking the lion’s share of the profits on the few acts that succeeded.
At least, this was all true when we signed our deal in 2000. Today, as the record industry’s revenue model has collapsed with the digitization of its biggest commodities, companies are cutting back spending on all but their biggest stars, and not signing nearly as many new acts. If record companies can’t adapt to this new world, they will die out; and without advances, so will the futures of many talented bands.
In these tight times, it’s no surprise that EMI is trying to wring revenue out of everything we make, including our videos. But it needs to recognize the basic mechanics of the Internet. Curbing the viral spread of videos isn’t benefiting the company’s bottom line, or the music it’s there to support. The sooner record companies realize this, the better — though I fear it may already be too late.
Damian Kulash Jr. is the lead singer and guitarist of the band OK Go.
BartBart February 20th, 2010, 01:48 PM ^^ Good article - thanks for posting.
acc521 February 20th, 2010, 02:15 PM Record companies are a joke. At the end of the day, one ends up doing a google search for what they want to watch and finds in on a site other than youtube. By trying to force people to use ''official'' avenues, we just end up using other avenues and bypass the official side altogether, costing the record company in the long term.

Sanj February 24th, 2010, 05:25 PM went to diana krall tonight - not bad (actually pretty good) for non-offensive whitebread jazz but she played for barely over an hour and it was $110. to put into perspective i paid less for 4th row seats at herbie hancock who has more talent in his left nut than she does.
i know ill be a lot more impressed by fat freddys this weekend who cost less than half of what her gig did.

Sanj February 27th, 2010, 03:31 AM check out the last video, awesome guitar around 2 mins in.
acc521 February 27th, 2010, 05:05 AM Very cool. The "problem" I am finding in London is that there is simply too much to see. In Perth if someone worthwhile came every now and then you'd see them and that would be that. Here, there are always so many great acts to check out every week and it's kind of annoying to have to select only a handful of things to see. A good dilemma to be in for sure, but, you know.
Jazz Cafe especially has a ludicrous number of great acts on each week. Really bummed that I'm not going to be able to see GZA there tonight :(
Sanj February 28th, 2010, 05:19 AM Fat Freddy's Drop killed it last night!!
anyone here go??
Kelli February 28th, 2010, 07:10 AM ^They would be amazing live, such good musicians, did they play new stuff? What venue was it? 'Based on a True Story' is one of my favourite albums but i was not so fussed about that one released last year, maybe i didn't give it enough of a chance.
Sanj February 28th, 2010, 07:56 AM they played some brand new tracks and a little bit from based on a true story but mostly from the one from last year.
they were birlliant though and there was a huge crowd there at the freo arts centre. first time seeing them since they played at the fly by night around 2006 and im really glad i went.
now hypnotic brass and gilles peterson tonight. going to be hurting tomorrow i think
Blindfold March 1st, 2010, 03:46 AM Anyone go to Future Music yesterday? The line-up was pretty fucking fantastic. I didn't go though. Bit over festivals and live music.
Sanj March 1st, 2010, 04:25 AM Hypnotic brass were really impressive, gilles peterson pretty average though. some good tunes but he banged it out way too much and was also very self indulgent.
everyone should go see hypnotic brass if they have a chance.
antibalas today, dont think the weary body can handle it. anyone who says there arent enough events to go to in perth is a fucking idiot. it has been an amazing weekend musically

Family Guy sparks record number of complaints
"Sarah Palin isn't the only one who's pissed off at Family Guy: one of the controversial cartoon's dirty gags sparked a record number of complaints to the Federal Communications Commission, the US agency whose duties include regulating indecent and obscene television content.
So which gag was it that's offended so many people? Those of you with delicate sensibilities may not want to read on ...
In the 2009 episode 'Family Gay', dad Peter brings a mentally disabled horse home from the racetrack. Hoping to become a breeder, Peter keeps the horse's sperm in the refrigerator — leading to baby Stewie mistakenly eating it in a bowl of cereal.
According to the LA Times , the episode has generated almost 200,000 complaints.
The Parents Television Council, a media watchdog, also decried other saucy jokes in the episode, including "an 11-way gay orgy" and a scene where "the show's leading character is also shown fantasising about his wife and moaning while a horse licks his bare behind."
Palin recently lashed out at Family Guy after a recent episode made a joke alluding to her son Trip, who has Down syndrome.
Family Guy airs on the Seven Network and FOX8."

Fringe plans to enliven PIAF
STEPHEN BEVIS ARTS EDITOR, The West Australian
March 2, 2010, 5:56 am
A fringe festival may sprout up alongside the Perth International Arts Festival next year, taking its lead from the success of Edinburgh and Adelaide in filling the streets with performances and arts events.
Alternative arts producer Artrage has been consulting PIAF organisers, venues, producers, artists and potential sponsors about replacing the biennial Artrage Festival in October with an annual Perth Fringe Festival each February.
Such an arrangement would restore a link severed in 1988 when the old Perth Fringe morphed into Artrage, which now had an annual turnover of almost $2 million and held events throughout the year, Artrage director Marcus Canning said.
The prospect of a revived fringe festival came as the three-week PIAF wrapped up last night with author Barry Lopez delivering the closing address of the writers' program and 4000 people attending a tribute concert to the late jazz diva Nina Simone at Kings Park.
Festival organisers expected to exceed the 320,000 attendance of last year. A 10,000 increase in paying customers to 190,000 would help meet the $4.1 million box-office target by the time the outdoor film season ends in mid-April.
However, organisers would probably fall short of achieving a five-year plan, hatched in 2006, of doubling the number of paid attendances to 240,000 by 2011, PIAF general manager Julian Donaldson said.
"It has always been an ambitious goal," he said. "What we certainly won't do is adjust the quality of our program just to get the numbers."
Artistic director Shelagh Magadza said the Festival appeared to have attracted more young people this year, thanks to a more appealing program and a greater use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
Ms Magadza registered plenty of hits but few misses - and these were mostly out of her hands, such as technical glitches halting a performance of Six Characters in Search of an Author.
As with past Festivals, some shows were more divisive than others in a year notable for its consistency and high quality from the moment Catalan troupe La Fura dels Baus rampaged through a 15,000-strong crowd at the opening event on February 5.
Among the audience favourites were the dance shows Happy as Larry and Good Morning, Mr Gershwin, the plays The Walworth Farce and The Sapphires, the opera Peter Grimes, the classical music of the Hilliard Ensemble and the world music stars Amadou & Mariam in the Music Box.
Mr Donaldson said the festival still struggled to make its presence felt in the streets, a problem that would be rectified with an open-access fringe festival, which would build diverse audiences and enhance vitality.
"Great festivals all over the world have fringes," he said. "A fringe will animate the streets, fill new venues with performances and give Perth people the opportunity to see that the city can come to life."
jackso March 2nd, 2010, 05:04 PM Thats funny. I was thinking just yesterday of the possibility of a Perth Fringe Festival. They are right when they say PIAF isnt felt in the streets like some other festivals. There is no doubt that it a great festival, with heaps of accessible events but it doesnt grip the city.
Youngplanner March 2nd, 2010, 05:10 PM Anyone go to Future Music yesterday? The line-up was pretty fucking fantastic. I didn't go though. Bit over festivals and live music.
No :( but heaps of friends did and I'm sick of them saying how awesome it was!!! "sunburn, lost phone, getting elbowed in the gut from the mosh and bathing in other peoples sweat - But it was SO worth it!" is pretty much what everyone has been saying. Will have to make sure I go next year.

About 3 years ago PIAF had quite a number of free outdoor events that I seemed to stumble across; people really get into them when they're happening, so a whole month of that in the CBD would generate a great festive atmosphere for locals and visitors.

It's Matisyahu, "Darkness into Light".
From Wiki (I'll let all you pseudo-racists run with this one):
"Matthew Paul Miller (born June 30, 1979), better known by his Hebrew name Matisyahu, is an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician.
Known for blending traditional Jewish themes with Reggae, rock and hip hop sounds, Matisyahu's single "King Without a Crown" was a Top 40 hit.[1] Since 2004, he has released three studio albums as well as one live album, two remix CDs and one DVD featuring a live concert. Through his career, Matisyahu has worked with Bill Laswell and reggae producers Sly & Robbie."

I realise it was coincidental (the anchor reference) - just trying to get a small rise out of the resident Freo supporters on here.
