desperaterobots January 3rd, 2011, 02:35 PM Yep, that's me. Have you guys checked Grand Lane yet? Beautiful!
Oh and here's some A5 prints I'm thinking of selling. (reworked from the work I put together for the print show at These Days in October)

Perth4life January 3rd, 2011, 02:48 PM DR does this mean you're going to be doing those characters with spray paint on legal walls?
desperaterobots January 3rd, 2011, 03:56 PM What the hell is 'spray paint'?
jonwil January 4th, 2011, 01:23 AM The artwork on Grand Lane is beautiful.
The constant dumping of rubbish (beer cans/bottles etc) in the lane (particularly in the area behind the building marked "127" on Google Maps) and the tagging and general graffiti on the rear of the same building is not beautiful and ruins the area.
hack404 January 4th, 2011, 05:27 AM Was there ever a night club down that lane?
Sanj January 4th, 2011, 05:30 AM nice work DR (re last chance and the prints). hope it all goes well!
Nate Von Longneck II January 4th, 2011, 05:51 AM Where the building to the left of the lane is, on Murray St, a large pub (and Pizza Showtime!) once existed.
Also, in Grand Lane, there were the "Sun Markets". It was Perth's first asian food market, that I am aware of.

Was that in the old Grand Theatre building?
Nate Von Longneck II January 4th, 2011, 06:40 AM No, it was where the laneway was. Kind of an indoor/outdoor sort of place. This was nearly thirty years ago, so my memories are a little hazy, but, my dad was a butcher at the time, and we would deliver meats to the chinks. I would tag along on school holidays. As a side note, where Harbor Town is now, is where the meat would come from (huge market there).
From memory, most of the laneway was sheltered. It was a *very* asian looking place, very hawker style.
Hence, my relationship with the asian persuasion began at a very young age.
BartBart January 4th, 2011, 06:46 AM ^^ I used to go to those markets when I was (much) younger on some Saturday mornings.

The reason I ask was that I came across the following description for a photo of the theatre:
Photograph taken just prior to demolition. Theatre had been used as an Oriental Food Hall.

The Sun Markets in grand lane, or the market at harbour town?
If it was the Sun Markets, what do you remember?
BartBart January 4th, 2011, 06:58 AM The ones in Market Street where HarbourTown now is.
Is Grand Lane the one near Woolworths?
jackso January 4th, 2011, 07:03 AM Yeah, Grand lane is directly east of the Woolworths building.

That was my very first taste of Asian food. I was blown away as a preteen when dad took me there for the first time. Perth was so white then.
On a similar note :), I met Tame Impala flying them over from Sydney to Perth yesterday. They had the NY band Sleigh Bells sitting behind them in the overwing exits (worryingly). Sleigh Bells were fun, drinking VB; Tame Impala more quiet - the singer looked stoned, but one of the guys was really chatty with me.
Sanj January 4th, 2011, 04:19 PM did he bang you in the dunny like ralph fiennes?
dallastexjr January 4th, 2011, 04:22 PM Lol omg no. I didn't recognise them when they boarded. I thought they looked feral, and a couple of them retarded. The chatty one was a really nice guy, but I couldn't stop staring at the state of his teeth when he was talking - I counted at least 4 shades of yellow. I had Tom Williams onboard once - would have let him bang me in the dunny fo' so'. Oops, just outed myself...
Dilaz89 January 4th, 2011, 04:24 PM That's awesome Dallas! Tame Impala are certain to be the next big act to come out of Perth. IMO they shit on Eskimo Joe.
WD to DR too! I'll swing by Last Chance next time i'm up that way.

Well I got their autographs, so I kinda hope they die in a plane crash in about 5 years, preferably one where I'm not onboard. Did I say that out loud?
desperaterobots January 4th, 2011, 06:07 PM I'll only really be there at nights Dilaz, and even then on a schedule that rotates with my night-shift job... So... I probably won't see you there!
I'll put some of my work in the windows soon though.

Mr. Brainwash speculation and theories
Since the release of the film Exit Through The Gift Shop, a documentary directed by Banksy, there has been much speculation that the film and story of Mr. Brainwash are a hoax concocted by Banksy himself. When he is shown "working," he is only seen splattering paint using aerosol cans to haphazardly color images and clumsily attempting to paste up a poster. Other aspects of the Mr. Brainwash character seem deliberately comical, such as his being pushed in a wheelbarrow after supposedly breaking his foot.
The quotes below typify the speculation for and against the idea of the film and Mr. Brainwash himself being a hoax:
"Is Banksy’s ‘Exit Through the Giftshop’ a hoax too far?" - the Times Online [10]
The whole thing, it's clear now, was an intricate prank being pulled on all of us by Banksy, who has never publicly revealed his identity, with Fairey as his accomplice. - Alissa Walker [11]
The low evidence of sales on artnet.com also supports the argument that the art world hasn’t really been as exploited by media-hype as the film suggests. With both shows held outside of commercial galleries, no professional dealers have had their reputation on the line in making fake claims of high sales. However, if Guetta is a hoax, there also exists the possibility that these artworks are actually produced by Banksy himself, in a style deliberately intended to suggest inferior artistic skill.[12]
As the movie opened in the USA, in April 2010, The Boston Globe movie reviewer Ty Burr found it to be quite entertaining as a farce and awarded it four stars. He dismissed the notion of the film being a "put on" saying "I’m not buying it; for one thing, this story’s too good, too weirdly rich, to be made up. For another, the movie’s gently amused scorn lands on everyone.

Pioneers of the Perth scene... featuring JAMES A
Friday, January 28 at 8:00pm - January 29 at 1:00am
Location Down a lane in Leederville
Created By
Double Lucky
More Info Na na naaaaaa gonna have a good time!!!!! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Straight up its kinda cool, and not cool for cools sake, but we can honestly say the majority of the DJs who have inspired us over the years (and continue to do so) also happen to be some of our closet friends. Our "Pioneers" series really is a privilege for us to host and have to thank you all for helping us carry out discos revenge with gusto... lets all chant... boompty!
Now for a PERTH DJ who needs no introduction, instead we welcome you all along on FRIDAY 28TH JANUARY 2011 to hear the whole story. All 15 years of it. But if you must know...
James A was first introduced to the house music sound at the age of 15 years old, via a close friend tuning his radio to Ben Stinga's Rhythm Fix radio show on RTR FM. Here he fell in love with the predominantly American sound of soulful & deep house music. Years later, deciding to venture out to buy records for the first time, he would meet Ben Stinga at his Purveyor Records store, and be offered his first DJ'ing set at Perth's seminal house music night Vibe @ The Greenwich Bar, in the summer of 1996. It was here that James learnt the craft of mixing vinyl, as well as meeting Ben M & Hau Tran, two other house music DJ's that would later be an integral part of James' DJ life...
After the demise of the Vibe night at The Greenwich Bar, James would find himself one hot summer's night sitting at the William Street McDonald's with Ben M, Hau Tran, & mutual friend Connor, where the concept for the Deep City night was born. Deep City, also nicknamed "the Friday night House Music Institution" was the weekly house music night between James, Ben M, Hau Tran, and Marc Allen, which enjoyed a two year success with punters, featuring the premier of local house music DJ's, as well as interstate and overseas guests.
From a beginning as an up & coming DJ at Vibe, through to hustling for his own parties & club nights, through to a 6 year stint hosting the Thursday prime time Full Frequency radio show, James has been fortunate enough to be a regular feature in the Perth music scene, as well as rocking dance floors overseas and interstate.
Furthermore, although he is genuinely humble about it, the fact remains that big games James is an exceptionally talented DJ who not only has respect, but is respected for what he throws down and how he gets down. If you have been on one of his dance floors you will know what I'm talkin bout Willis. But further still, if you are the company you keep, let it be known, James A has shared boomtpy duty alongside some of his (and lets face it all of our) personal house music heros including:
Masters At Work
Both Derricks... Derrick Carter and Derrick May
Luke Solomon
DJ Heather
DJ Sneak
Alton Miller
Miguel Migs,
Stacey Pullen +++++ many, many more!
At this instalment of Pioneers of the Perth Scene, expect James to revisit the music that has helped shape his last 15 years of DJ'ing in Perth, including the deeper house sounds, soulful vocal house bombs, and the trademark Chicago house vibe, skillfully blended in with current stylings & future directions in house music....
This is one Perth DJ set no true House head should miss!

acc521 January 25th, 2011, 03:41 PM The London show was really entertaining. The only criticism I would lay at it was that there wasn't much tailoring of the show to the occasion/audience. You could tell that, no matter where you see him on the tour, the show, the banter etc would be identical.

Rock legends to launch concert venue
SIMON COLLINS MUSIC EDITOR, The West Australian January 20, 2011, 6:20 am
http://l.yimg.com/ea/img/-/110120/180111todredhill1_16jesq7-16jesq9.jpg
The Red Hill Auditorium has been a labour of love 12 years in the making for the man behind Perth's newest concert venue.
Marcus Sarich, 42, bought the 10ha property in the City of Swan in 1999 with the dream of creating an outdoor venue designed to host everything from rock concerts to performances from The Wiggles or the WA Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to being able to hold up to 5000 people, the venue had to be a short drive from the CBD but isolated enough to avoid noise and traffic issues.
"They didn't have Google Earth in 1999, so it really involved getting the UBD and driving around the whole metropolitan area," Mr Sarich said.
The limestone amphitheatre was built in the 16 weeks leading up to tonight's media and industry launch. Most of the past 12 years was spent dealing with local council and liquor licensing red tape.
Red Hill Auditorium, nestled on the north-west side of the John Forrest National Park, will host its first concert with Australian music legend Paul Kelly and New Zealand's Neil Finn on Anzac Day.
The venue's free Sunday night film season begins on February 20.
Mr Sarich, who has run bars at festivals for the past decade, says the auditorium will offer a special experience.
"It's a love affair," he said.
"It is a multipurpose arts venue, something very close to our hearts."
On concert nights, buses will shuttle punters from 14 suburban pubs to the venue and back for a fee of $15.

Comfort for Concert Hall
NEVILLE COHN
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/2675/pch1s.jpg
A lot of time and effort has gone into the choice of new seats for the Perth Concert Hall — and it seems it has all been worth it.
The new seats were "road tested" by Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi and Perth Theatre Trust chairman Saliba Sassine this week and given the thumbs up.
Dr Sassine described them as having "business class comfort".
The Perth Concert Hall has been closed to the public since a $1.6 million refurbishment began this month.
Funded by the City of Perth and the State Government, the project involved calling for expressions of interest for the design and supply of all 1729 seats and 160 seats in the choir gallery.
PCH General Manager Andrew Bolt said 12 companies from around the globe had tendered for the contract, won by a firm in Bogota, Colombia, with the fabric manufactured by a Japanese-owned mill in South Korea.
Ms Scaffidi said the renovation was timely and important to keep the venue current with other venues in a competitive market.

State Theatre Centre of Western Australia officially opened
Portfolio: Premier, Culture and the Arts
The Governor of Western Australia His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC and Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia at a civic ceremony.
The Premier said the opening of the centre was a defining moment in the cultural history of the State and represented a new era for performing arts in Western Australia with the ceremony formally commemorating completion of the first fully-funded professional theatre in Perth through the State Government.
“Not only will the State Theatre Centre be an inspiring venue for performers and audiences, it is also an elegant architectural and civic landmark for the city,” Mr Barnett said.
“It will create a sense of place and identity in the Perth Cultural Centre and contribute to Perth’s regeneration. It is a venue of which all West Australians can rightly be proud.”
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the centre would present works that would challenge, entertain and inspire audiences.
“This is an exceptional venue for West Australians that will support the best local, national and international contemporary performing arts,” Mr Day said.
“Designed by Kerry Hill Architects, the centre features state-of-the-art technology and facilities, including the impressive Heath Ledger Theatre and the flexible performance space, Studio Underground.”
The civic ceremony is the first in a series of celebrations to mark the opening of the State Theatre Centre and was hosted by well-known Australian actor William McInnes who studied his craft at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
A Welcome to Country by Noongar elders, Dr Richard Walley and Aunty May was given, and a Theatre Ode written by theatre historian Ivan King to commemorate the opening of the centre, was performed by respected WA actor, Michael Loney.
Exhibits from the WA Museum’s 2012 exhibition about Heath Ledger’s life, including the 2009 Best Supporting Actor Oscar statuette and the costume from Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight; and the portrait of the actor by Vincent Fantauzzo that won the 2008 People’s Choice Archibald Prize, were loaned to the State Theatre Centre for the opening celebrations.
On Saturday, January 29, 2011, 1,000 guests will take part in the first official performances at the centre with two gala celebrations.
West Australians will get an opportunity to step inside the new centre at ‘O’ Day on Sunday, January 30, 2011 when people can tour the venue for free as part of a number of events being held in the Perth Cultural Centre to celebrate the official opening of the State Theatre Centre.
Free activities will be held from 10am to 4pm during ‘O’ Day, including children’s rides, roving entertainment, artisan markets and special exhibitions and activities at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, WA Museum and State Library of Western Australia.
The first ticketed performances in the Heath Ledger Theatre and Studio Underground will be during the Perth International Arts Festival.

Nate Von Longneck II February 1st, 2011, 05:01 AM british > aussie for sure.. there's a little bit of good aussie hip hop but most is shite
It's all subjective.
I would dare say that what I see as "good" Hip Hop, and what you see as "good" Hip Hop, are two very different things.
Crave has good taste in Hip Hop, what happened to the days of Crave posting youtubes of NYC Hip Hop bangers?
Perth4life February 2nd, 2011, 02:21 PM of course, i've got friends who refuse to acknlowedge anything other that US hip hip can be good
i really dig deeper shit, bit past bumpin hip hop although i still crank it in the car, chilling having drinks etc.
but stuff like what i posted is more for listening to by yourself type business
in a complete contradiction to what i said

ryan79 February 2nd, 2011, 03:50 PM Dr Dre - The Chronic is a fucking work of art. Great era of hip hop around that time with early Snoop Dogg.
But the harder, raw urban hip hop from the 80s is still the best IMO. Before it was raped for profit.
UK hip hop reminds me of that 80s hip hop, still raw and real instead of talking shit about how tough they are and what bling they have. Fukn piss weak sell outs.
acc521 February 2nd, 2011, 03:55 PM UK hip hop reminds me of that 80s hip hop, still raw and real instead of talking shit about how tough they are and what bling they have. Fukn piss weak sell outs.
There is a LOT of crap hip-hop in the UK. It's easy to avoid it when you're not living here lol. I'm not so lucky unfortunately.
Perth4life February 2nd, 2011, 03:58 PM one thing i don't like about old school hip hop is how the lyrical flow got played the fuck out in a more commercial sense., ie. "yo my names perfy and im a tight ass g, aint no other ssc thugz creepin up on me, spell my name tight p4l alright, ry and nate spinnin beats all night".
i've been listening to the chronic on repeat lately in my car because im too lazy to put the cd case back in the car and i'm sick of what's on the usb stick (yes my tuner has a front USB :p) it's what was in there like 2 weeks ago, i've really appreciated more than i use to.. i feel the chronic wasn't so much about bling etc. as the later dre/snoop type business was, a lot is about the ghetto still, smoking weed (obv) and fuckin' bitches.. a few tunes they have a go at people for making money , flaunting etc..
this is probably one of my favourite ever hip hop tunes, first heard it on Ghost dog the way of the samurai about 5 years ago..

in fact the whole Heavy Mental album is a masterpeice...

I went there a number of times. Love the place. You really need to go see some live UK hip hop there though.
I saw Scratch Perverts there. They play a lot of UK hip hop and gradually build it up to hard core/dnb and/or metal. Never seen a mosh pit in a dance club before.
Have you been to Ministry? I did, just to tick the box, but its nothing special. Fantastic sounds system though but full of posers.

I think you would have caught it at the worst time. I was reading an article saying how it went really mainstream and crap but has become good again over the past 2 years. When I went this time last year there it was great. A mixture of young and old clubbers, no pretension, and a crowd definitely there for the music.

No but really, Sufjan Stevens was amazing at the Regal last night. He has a real presence on stage, even though he is performing with 10 other musicians at some points. Very creative staging as well.

Minister for Planning; Culture and the Arts; Science and Innovation
Thu 17 February, 2011
Free entertainment and activities at Perth Cultural Centre ‘O’ Day
Portfolio: Planning, Culture and the Arts
Perth’s cultural heart will be pumping with entertainment and activity this Sunday as ‘O’ Day celebrations return to the Perth Cultural Centre.
Planning and Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said ‘O’ Day would offer free entertainment for people of all ages with public tours of the new State Theatre Centre, designer markets, exhibitions and a range of children’s rides and activities.
“The State Government, through EPRA, has recently delivered $11million of short term improvements in the Perth Cultural Centre to help create a place that West Australians can be proud of,” Mr Day said.
“’O’ Day is a great opportunity to discover, explore and enjoy the transformation of one of Perth’s favourite public spaces.”
Originally scheduled as part of the State Theatre Centre opening celebrations, ‘O’ Day had to be cancelled last month due to severe weather warnings associated with Cyclone Bianca.
The Minister said rescheduling the event was important to show the potential of the Perth Cultural Centre as a premier events destination.
“We are working to make the Perth Cultural Centre a creative, engaging, inclusive and memorable place to visit and experience,” he said.
“By attracting more festivals and events such as Fringe World and St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, EPRA is continuing to enliven the area.”
The Perth Cultural Centre houses some of the State’s most important cultural and learning institutions with more than one million visitors passing through the area each year.
Recent works completed in the centre include the creation of an urban orchard and native wetlands, improved lighting, furniture and landscaping, free WiFi access and the installation of retail pods to house cafe style vendors.
Activities will run from 10am to 4pm. For more information about ‘O’ Day or the Perth Cultural Centre, visit http://www.perthculturalcentre.com.au

ive certainly never heard of them doing it in the past and the first one i went to was in 2000 or 2001. i think it is a great lineup but the problem is there isnt enough electro, dubstep or general bullshit doof doof to attract large numbers and there are also waaaaay too many festivals on nowadays.

WA deserves more arts funding
28-April-11 by Edited announcement
The Chamber of Arts and Culture WA has called for more equitable Federal Government investment in Western Australia's cultural sector.
Chamber Chair Sam Walsh said the succession of multi-billion dollar resources projects in the State served to mask the ongoing struggle for Western Australia's arts organisations to continue their vital contribution to the State's social development.
"Ensuring West Australians have access to the arts - whether it is music, ballet, opera, theatre, film or the visual arts - is critical to the social "health" of our State. Providing cultural experiences and opportunities is an essential part of making our State and capital city an attractive and interesting place to live, work and visit," Mr Walsh said.
The Chamber has identified next month's Federal Budget as one of the earliest opportunities to further promote fair and sustainable arts funding.
"While the Commonwealth has talked about a tight budgetary environment and spending restraint, the Chamber believes there is still scope through mechanisms such as the Australia Council to provide a fairer distribution of funding to WA's peak performing arts companies," Mr Walsh said.
"Based on population alone, Western Australia should receive 10% of total funding channelled through the Council; however, our State has consistently fallen short of this mark. Figures from the Australia Council for the Arts Annual Report 2009/10 indicate that across all art forms, WA's share is $9.8 million less than our State should reasonably expect using population as the determining criteria."
Mr Walsh said in 2009-10, WA received the least amount of arts funding of the mainland states. South Australia, for example, racked up almost $3 million dollars more than WA - despite having 600,000 less people.
"At the same time WA is the largest net contributor to the Commonwealth, which derived around $38 billion in revenue from the State in 2008-9."
Mr Walsh said it was important to point out that the arts in Western Australia had not become dependent on government handouts and many organisations had achieved box office growth and increasing levels of sponsorship and donations.
"There is no lack of talent in the State. Shaun Tan recently won an Oscar for his short film, while in 2010 young artists Tamryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont won the $100,000 Basil Sellers Art Prize. But it is a fact of life that Federal money, along with State Government contributions, is part of the funding jigsaw needed to sustain a healthy cultural sector. All we want is our fair share," he said.

A Midsummer Nights Dream Live Broadcast
For the first time in Australia, on 21 May 2011, Black Swan State Theatre Company’s live stage performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the State Theatre Centre of WA in Perth will be broadcast in real time to audiences across regional Western Australia. A live broadcast has never been done in by an Australian state theatre company before this.
With a huge cast of 17 WA actors, and directed by Artistic Director Kate Cherry, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies, as it weaves stories of love and longing, magic and mayhem together into a perennial audience favourite.
To create the opportunity for regional audiences to share and experience the best of live theatre, Black Swan will broadcast a live performance of this Shakespearean classic from the new State Theatre Centre of WA to audiences in six regional and rural centres – as well as two metropolitan venues, Armadale and Northbridge Piazza. The broadcast will also be available on the Westlink network.
This is an opportunity for thousands of regional WA citizens who normally cannot attend Black Swan performances because of distance or financial constraints to share a state-wide ‘live’ experience within their own community. Thanks to support from Lotterywest, admission to the broadcasts at all venues is free.
No other state theatre company in Australia has put on a live broadcast like this project.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be broadcast live onto screens at the following venues on Saturday 21 May from 7.00pm:
* Esperance: Esperance Civic Centre; bookings on 9083 1566
* Kalgoorlie: Goldfields Arts Centre; bookings on 9088 6900 or www.goldfieldsartscentre.com.au

The Ricky Gervais show is basically Gervais and Stephen Merchant asking Karl Pilkington for his opinions on things he knows nothing about and then ripping in to him about how stupid he is. And it's fucking hilarious. Definitely worth your time.

Dilaz89 June 2nd, 2011, 04:44 PM Is Tyler The Creator cool in hip-hop cirlces? Debate was raging on the radio this afternoon weather or not it's acceptable to use sexist and homophobic lyrics even if it is just for shock value. I personally couldn't care less and I like 'Yonkers' but don't really know any of his other tunes.

Cool...hmmm I dunno. Seems to generate too much media for the depth of his talent and skills... this is a bad combination for long-term success in Hip Hop. It's a battle culture, it's a bit like tall poppy syndrome - unless the poppy has genuine talent, it will get cut.
The jury is still out, he's a young guy.
Personally, I have read the back story on him and his crew, and admire their independent spirit, and how far they have got using (almost) only their own resources.
Yonkers is pretty interesting...I thought I may have posted it on here somewhere a while back...

Perth mourns ragtime maestro
BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian
April 20, 2011, 5:02 am
The West Australian ©
Tributes have flooded in for Perth's piano man John Gill, who died last week aged 57.
The talents of the acclaimed stride and ragtime pianist took him around the world but he was probably best known for his energetic busking for more than 17 years in the Murray and Hay street malls.
He gave what would be his last performance on Thursday.
He suffered an apparent heart attack at a North Perth shopping centre on Friday night and could not be revived.
London-born Gill was the first and only Australian to become an accredited Bosendorfer Concert Artist and the first to be invited to play at the prestigious Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in America, where he performed annually.
He toured Australia, South-East Asia and was getting ready for another US trip in June.
Before following his parents to Australia in 1983, he played in leading hotels and clubs in Europe and became Britain's top ragtime pianist.
Fellow Perth musician and friend Garry Lee said Gill was the consummate artist.
"He played with, obviously, incredible technique and virtuosity but he was also able to engage the audience," he said. "Very few pianists in the world can play like John and as far as Australia is concerned, I don't think there'd be any."
Jazz Australia owner Diana Allen, who had a 25-year association with Gill, said he was one of the greatest ragtime pianists of our time.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said Gill was a wonderful performer and his death was a loss to the city.

After that one, I hope no-one accuses you not being on the ball Kelli. It is not as if you have been in the bush recently and out of contact with the small news of our city. ;)
Perth4life June 7th, 2011, 10:55 AM gtfo, there are some awesome buskers in Perth, especially Northbridge on friday and saturday nights..
Dilaz89 June 7th, 2011, 01:34 PM the quality of perth buskers has improved markedly especially since 'A Frame' left town.
Kelli June 7th, 2011, 01:44 PM Oops, bit slow was I?
Who was A-Frame?
Dilaz89 June 7th, 2011, 02:03 PM The girl who used to sing horribly throughout the malls. She had an 'A frame' walking thingy that she'd carry around for people's sympathy.
jackso June 7th, 2011, 02:04 PM Is she the one who used to scream at people who didn't give her money?
Dilaz89 June 7th, 2011, 02:05 PM yeah, that one.
She called me a fag once.

What's worse though is that bitch who sings opera which has somehow ended up on one of those reality shows...australia's got talent? I've seen her so many times telling people off for not standing close enough or not giving her any money etc. "this is how I make a living" she normally yells out. May be she should get a day job.

i was going from the bird to near rosies to meet someone the other night, my friend who was shitfaced beyond belief stopped at every single busker getting loose, dancing etc. throwing notes ($$) at them! i bet he regretted that on saturday morning

Dilaz89 June 8th, 2011, 05:52 AM lol. I don't think she was dumb enough to try out for one of those shows.

jackso June 9th, 2011, 08:54 AM The new Art Gallery director seems to be doing his job very well..
Picasso, Warhol, Matisse coming to Perth
Perth has scored its second exclusive international exhibition in as many days with works by some of the world's most famous artists heading to the city.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day announced today the city had signed a $6 million deal to host a series of six exhibitions featuring some of the world's most famous artists, including Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
The agreement with New York's world-renowned Museum of Modern Art follows an announcement yesterday that the city would host an exclusive exhibition of artefacts from the British Museum during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October.
The first of the art exhibitions, titled Picasso to Warhol: Twelve Modern Masters, will feature more than 100 modern art masterpieces by 12 20th-century artists.
"The partnership with New York's MoMA will give West Australians the chance to see exclusive highlights from this outstanding collection, many of which have never been seen outside the United States," Mr Day said.
"It's an exciting and ambitious project for the [West Australian] Art Gallery and forms the next stage in the gallery's Great Collections of the World exhibition series [as part of an international tour].
"The series continues to provide residents and visitors with a unique opportunity to see masterpieces from the world's leading museums and galleries."
Mr Day said the exhibitions proved WA's capacity to deliver "significant, outstanding and exclusive cultural events".
The first of the MoMA exhibitions will launch on June 16, next year, and include celebrated works from Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi, Piet Mondrian, Fernand Leger, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns and Jackson Pollock.
Mr Day said the five subsequent exhibitions would draw from MoMA's extensive collection, including design and photography.

Went to the opening of the festival with some mates on thurs too - was $40 for the opening night (and a showing of Fire in Babylon - a brilliant film about the West Indian cricket team in the 70s and 80s).... but we made up for that with the free booze

Nate Von Longneck II July 19th, 2011, 11:19 AM They will provide whatever the public wants/deserves
The public wants live music, as evidenced by the great turnout the Hydey had, practically every night, for decades.
As for deserves, well, thats a can of worms for sure, but I somewhat agree with you.
acc521 July 19th, 2011, 11:30 AM Agree and disagree.
I agree with the comment re the public wanting live music, but I disagree with the comment about them ''getting what they deserve''. If it wasn't for such tight regulations, there would be other places opening up where someone with an idea and a little cash could open up something basic at a low rent. When supply is artificially restricted, it's always going to be the higher end, ripoff joints that will survive/take over.
There is a demand for both types of venue.

High drama over State Theatre
by emilia vranjes
IT is architecturally praised and has provided Black Swan State Theatre Company and Perth Theatre Company with a much-needed new state-of-the-art home, but the imposing State Theatre Centre of WA is not pleasing everybody in the Perth performing arts sector.
The Northbridge complex, which won numerous gongs at the recent 2011 WA Architecture Awards, has serious shortcomings, according to WA Ballet artistic director Ivan Cavallari.
Mr Cavallari said the Heath Ledger Theatre's limited capacity - combined with restrictive views - meant a lyrical theatre was needed sooner rather than later.
"I understand they wanted to clean up the darkness of Northbridge, but Perth still remains without a lyrical theatre and it is going to take another 20 years (for that to happen)," he said.
Perth Theatre Trust General Manager Alan Ferris said the new theatre was not built to specifically cater to the WA Ballet and WA Opera, given they already had a home at His Majesty's Theatre.
"Every venue cannot be everything to everyone," Mr Ferris said.
"The general manager and production manager of WA Ballet were consulted in 2004 and 2005, when the design brief for the venue was finalised, and at
that stage indicated their possible interest in using the venue for one contemporary performance season a year."
He said some sets, if extensive, would result in restrictive views, "similar to any other venue" and added workshops were being planned for theatre workers to "maximise the impacts of their sets while maintaining optimum sight lines".
Mr Cavallari said a lyrical theatre was desperately needed to secure WA Ballet and WA Opera's futures, given His Majesty's was also hindered by seats with restricted viewing.
"You cannot continue to please audiences with an incredibly restricted view," he said.
But Mr Ferris said the Heath Ledger Theatre was the only venue that was selling out, "whereas the venues with more seats, such as His Majesty's, rarely sell out".
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said a lyrical theatre was a long-term plan, but other projects, such as the new museum, were the current priority.
"I'm advised the Perth Arena will have the ability to cater for larger scale events in a 3000-seat lyric mode," he said.
"The Arena's capacity to cater for WA Ballet and WA Opera will need to be explored alongside projected population expansion before any other major infrastructure projects could be considered."

Urbania August 14th, 2011, 06:56 AM Well, saw Tree of Life and found it really interesting. Especially the sequence showing the formation of the universe, then the earth and the evolution of life.
I can definitely understand why some people would walk out, as it is almost defiantly non-narrative and impressionistic, much more so than Malick's other films. But once I got into the rhythm and poetry of it, it worked really well.

Multi-million dollar fund for contemporary art reaches its goal
The TomorrowFund, launched in 2008 to transform the State Art Collection through the acquisition of works of contemporary art, has reached its designated target, receiving pledges totalling $25million.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Art Gallery of Western Australia would now receive a promised $5million of State Government funding.
“In 2008, the State Government contributed $10million to the TomorrowFund, and pledged a further $5million if the gallery could raise $10million of its own,” Mr Day said.
“I’m very pleased to congratulate the gallery on achieving this target with the receipt of a very generous donation, valued at more than $3million, from Andrew and Nicola Forrest.
“It is the last of many major pledges from Western Australia’s leading companies and community figures, including the initial $1million pledges from BHP Billiton; National Australia Bank; Wesfarmers; and Woodside.
“These donations and the generous gifts from many individual West Australians have ensured the success of the acquisition project.
“The success of the TomorrowFund reflects an outstanding response from WA’s corporate and private sector to the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s challenge to create an arts legacy for future generations of Western Australia.”
The Minister said that, in the past 18 months, TomorrowFund had enabled the gallery to acquire 148 works of contemporary art, including 95 works by Western Australian artists; 49 works by Australian artists and four works by international artists. These included works by recognised artists such as Dale Frank; Fiona Foley; Brendan van Hek (recently awarded the inaugural Stringer Award); Sally Gabori; and Jesper Just.
“One of the first works ever acquired by the Art Gallery of Western Australia was Frederick McCubbin’s Down on His Luck,” he said.
“At the time, this was considered a bold move for the gallery, as McCubbin was a relatively new contemporary artist but today the painting is recognised as an Australian masterpiece.
“The TomorrowFund’s aim was to ensure the gallery remains in a position to purchase today’s McCubbins.
“Reaching this fund raising target of $10million as part of the total $25million fund is a significant step towards securing the future of the State Art Collection.”

The new director there seems to have worked wonders, I wonder if it's him that will be doing the shopping.
