Except for the first post, the rest look rather drab and uncomfortable tbh. They'll probably look a lot better with a little more maintenance.

Aye definitely, just looks like a few areas of property that need done up, after which they would look amazing.

Yep, they would look amazing, but these traditional houses are a huge headache to maintain, and nowhere as comfortable as modern ones.

IMO, if one could combine modern materials and amenities with the traditional look, that would be fantastic.

Nail on the head there, how do we combine character with modern materials without falling to pastiche? I think modern Japan has managed to do it in places, my sister was over there 2 months ago, stayed in a modern traditional for a week and said it was the most comfortable week of her life :yes:

Really love oriental Asia. :nuts:

Many of these buildings are from the villages, thats the reason why they are not well maintain,i wonder if the thread starters have any photos from Pingyao or Lijiang, these two are truly medieval city in large scale. Nice thread, plz keep posting more

some of those buildings look Western as they were built by welathy Chinese merchants returning from abroad, and developed imported styles ('showing off' their worldiness), notably off Portuguese trade routes, which they amalgamated with local Chinese vernacular. It's also known as 'Chinese baroque'. Those villages and fort-houses are now UNESCO World Heritage sites.

A similar example in theory are the Shanghai shikumen housing from the 1900-1920s, an amalgamation of British (brick, rowhomes) and Eastern styles (sloping roofs, courtyards, shuttered windows):

What are these decorations made from, anyone know? They must need to be sturdy in order to withstand weathering

Should be a wood carving, which is quite sturdy and can withstand the elements with the proper re-paint every now and then. Have never seen them snap off from the forces of nature though. These ornaments are quite huge actually.

Can anyone tell me the history behind the towers in hkskyline's post? They're beautiful. Were they for defense? Wealthy families? How old are they? Why were they built so tall?
