Guests having a meal at the new Mr. Tasty’s in Ntinda

MR Tasty’s (you probably know the name from the crowded takeaway just outside Shoprite in Lugogo Mall) expanded to Ntinda and now looks like a potential alternative for Nando’s, which has become more than just a chicken and pizza joint—it’s virtually an institution now.

There are people who don’t go to Nando’s to eat. They just go to Nando’s and eat while they are there.
The first thought on entering Tasty’s in Ntinda was, “Wow. Nice.” Forget the kavuyo (chaos) of the other Mr. Tasty’s. This is way nicer, with pleasant furniture, warm copper paint on the walls, warm colours.

The parking lot will take a bit of time to get full (but it will be full, if my predictions that Mr Tasty’s popularity will skyrocket overnight are correct) but for now, there is space to place your vehicle.

There is a small part of the said lot set aside for diners, but with the sun of these days, you will want to go inside.
And inside is, let me reiterate, nice! Now, this is the Mr Tasty’s drill: you go to the counter and order a chicken and chips meal, or a burger or, as I learnt this week, pilau.

They take your order. You pay and wait. When your food is ready, they call out your number and you go for your food. A place as nice as this should have had waiters, but this afternoon the routine above was the one at work. We asked for burgers and chips.

The same Lugogo Mall takeaway treatment is what we got. The chips came on paper plates and the burgers in takeaway boxes.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I loved my burger. I love Mr. Tasty’s burgers. But I must quibble. The venue is just too nice to serve you like this.

It is too elegant to behave like a takeaway. It’s like a man in a designer suit eating with his fingers. Nothing wrong with eating with your fingers, but if you are wearing Armani, it just doesn’t look right.

I am sure, however, that in time the management will adjust. It is too nice a place not to.

Emin Pasha

Dining at Emin Pasha is more akin to being invited out to dinner at the home of a good friend than actually eating out in a restaurant. On the Friday night when we were there, one could not have hoped for a better place to be.

Out on the neatly manicured lawns were a local group who were not only serenading the diners with a rich crop of jazz music, but they also soothed and gently massaged us through the evening. On top of that, with the crackles of burning firewood from the bonfire, everything was set for a serene evening.

By the bar, other guests lounged in the massive sofa sets while tapping their feet to the music wafting through. But the real treat lay in the dining room. When it comes to food, Emin Pasha not only excels, but they endeavour to push the boat out.

With my guest settling for the Parma ham wrapped chicken breasts, mozzarella filling, cow pea mash and green parsley sauce and I, the char-grilled beef fillet, mashed potatoes, wilted spinach and Roquefort sauce, it was a sight to behold when it was presented

. It was next to impossible to start eating because in terms of presentation, what was before us should have been in the food museum so that upcoming chefs can have an idea about what food presentation is all about.

With the main course done, the chef, however, had another surprise up his sleeves. For dessert, he presented the rum and bitter chocolate tart, crème fraiche with summer berry coulis. And was the chef insane or whatm, for he pulled off the unexpected. The best I can do is to say it was deep, magical and so on!”

Mamba Point

Mamba Point is the finest Italian restaurant in Kampala today. Mamba Point derives its name from a suburb in the capital city of Liberia. It is owned and run by Guido and Fiona.
Its clientele tend to be the well-heeled and connected who go there over lunch.

With patrons huddled over the tables in the corners or in the private dining room, seemingly endless meetings are conducted and conversations are kept low and almost to a murmur.
But the real beauty about Mamba Point, is that it is rich in all aspects — furniture, design, ambience and crockery.

Kampala Serena Hotel

Some people argue that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. At Kampala Serena Hotel, when it comes to breakfast, it is not a case of tea, bread and maize. Rather, it is a gastronomic feast, a feast designed not only to impress but to fill as well. But before I bask or rather revel about the feast, other things first.

The breakfast lounge at Serena is bright and airy. What has to impress is the attention to detail. The cutlery has been precisely laid out, the tablecloths and napkins are well-starched and pressed well (and not laid upside down like in some hotels) and the staff on duty — right down from the pleasant young lady who leads you to your table, the chef (and a lady at that), plus the waiters are neatly turned out. Their shoes are well-polished, their shirts are crisp white and they have clean short nails. Most importantly, they have armpits that don’t reek of last night’s sweat. Obviously, hygiene is something that is taken seriously at Serena.

When it comes to seating, you have two options — inside or out on the patio which, is what I would recommend for there is nothing like sitting outside and admiring the neat gardens while taking in the fresh Kampala air that has yet to be polluted by the early morning traffic.

Now to the gastronomic feast. They have seven different types of juices to start you off with along with cereals, wet muesli, a choice of yoghurts’ and breads right down to freshly made bread. Then there are waffles, smoked salmon, a choice of eggs, fried plantain, chicken escalope’s, steaks — the list goes on. With all that and more to choose from, the question is, where to you start?

Sheraton Hotel

In terms of brand names, Sheraton tops the list. And because it is Sheraton, they have the global brand name to protect. At the Hippo Grill which forms their main dining centre, here you will find the Sheraton brand name hard at work.

Depending on the day, one of the favourites is the leg of roast lamb that made former German ambassador to Uganda Klaus Holderbaum remark that the chefs could do no wrong.

Most of the clientele are businesspeople and it is not as expensive as some people think it is. Well, certainly there are people out there who dine here on a regular basis, but are not known for having wads of cash with them.

Nyanja Restaurant

According to the Luganda dictionary, Nyanja means lake. Aptly enough, Nyanja Restaurant is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. Smart dining is what we can use to sum up Nyanja, which has hosted a number of distinguished guests — Sir Ketumile Masire, the former Botswana president; King Mswati III of Swaziland; Robert Mugabe from Zimbabwe; President and Mrs. Thandiwe of Zambia along with Mr. and Mrs. Museveni.

When you walk into Nyanja for the first time, it can be intimidating. There is a hush, an expectation that you have to conform to the rules and settings that the management demands. But once you take a seat and the waitress comes over to you, you quickly settle back into your seat and start to soak in its surroundings as well as appreciate everything, from its fine architecture to the crockery and plush furniture.

On either side of the walls are huge French windows — with one side bringing in the sunlight by bouncing it off the lake and the other side looking up toward the rest of the resort with its plush neatly manicured green grass and palm trees.

When it comes to cuisine, they could not have done any better. They have brought in one of the finest head chefs — Chef Marcus — who I am told once dazzled visiting heads of state with his food during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting almost four years ago. Marcus dazzles in the kitchen and when his creations are presented before you, an appreciation of fine cuisine sets in.

Kabira Country Club

The Kabira Country Club of back then when it first opened and what it has been transformed into today are miles apart. The new Kabira is probably in a league of its own. The restaurant is impressive and if that does not impress, then it’s the bar — one of the longest bars there is in the country.

It is airy and relaxing. It has a lazy feel to it yet, it appeals to the businessman, the tourist — in fact it embraces all classes. Under the tight stewardship of Amit Sachdeva, Kabira Country Club is a famed eatery in Kampala.

Such is its appeal that when a visiting M-Net television crew dined there two years ago, they lamented that the food was far better than some of the top places in South Africa. And of course every Friday, they have their famed Mongolian cuisine which attracts more than an impressive crowd.

Too lazy to do the dishes? Just eat out

Eating out has been made more interesting and fun, it has even made unromantic men and women seem and act romantic. Today-themed restaurants have made life easy for the so-called corporate class. It’s easy if one felt like eating Indian, Chinese or Italian food. All they have to do is go find that Indian or Chinese restaurant.

When I go out to eat, I look for these essentials that will bring me back to living in today’s world of convenience. It is no secret that people have become quite used to the idea of dining out because it’s convenient. I for one have forgotten what a homemade meal tastes like.

I used to go home to my mother’s for a hot meal of the usual mashed matooke, rice served with beef or chicken stew every Sunday. Not anymore, all I have to do is call a restaurant, make my order and a delivery man will drop my order off at my doorstep.

Eating out offers a great opportunity to cuisine adventurers to
give themselves a special treat

If you’re like me, you despise doing dishes. Many people feel the same way as I do. Food preparation usually requires a lot of clean-up time, especially if you do not have a maid. It is so much easier to have someone else cook for you than do the cooking and then clean up all the dishes after the meal.

A lot of people are just too busy or exhausted to take time off to prepare a meal. They would much rather grab something quick, instead of having to prepare the food themselves. Restaurants have everything they need.

Foreign-themed restaurants are mushrooming all over Kampala and it is clear why they are such a big hit. They are indeed a big hit and are attracting the crème de la crème of socialites and the monied around town.

Themes range from Chinese (the pioneers of themed restaurant business) to Lebanese, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Mongolian, Nigerian and Ethiopian.

Twenty years ago foreign themed restaurant were non-existent. We hardly had foreign dishes made here. All we had was our local food and you could not adventure as a cuisine enthusiast considering there are people who enjoy sampling foreign dishes the same way others go to the national park to view wild animals.

These restaurants appeal to cuisine adventurers, bachelors and spinsters, people celebrating something, those that love foreign cuisine often or the rich who can afford a meal daily in these places. Many people are choosing to eat out because they are in the mood to treat themselves to a social and culinary experience.

Today, people eat out due to the modern conveniences of our world. Many times, you can eat out for not much more than it would cost to make a meal of equal value. How often do you eat out?





Seven years of eating out in Uganda

I have always loved dining out in Uganda. From the first time I arrived here in 2003, I have tried and tested almost every restaurant (in my category of course — That Bukumunhe guy definitely does a wider range and reviews the loos WTF).

So how do I decide which my all-time favourite is after seven years? Do I base the selection on the food, the ambiance, or the staff?

Last year I travelled to the US for the first time and was awed by the efficiency of the system regarding eating. One evening, we decided to head down to Times Square and sample one of the many restaurants available, mostly franchises. We ended up at the “Forest Gump — Run Forest Run movie restaurant franchise”. The food was too much, but good. However, the overall experience was disappointing. The service was too good, almost artificial. Every waiter who walked past asked if they could help. You had about seven seconds between courses, plates were whisked away before you could relax and chat — it was like, eat, Tony eat. This is often the case in South Africa too. The franchise profits are based on good food served often — the analogy is serve, eat, leave, start over! I have never experienced this in Uganda!

What I like about restaurants in Uganda is that franchises have not invaded the country yet. You can still get a unique experience at a restaurant. I love the fact that the cutlery is either fine old stainless steel with genuine brass tableware, or non-existent — “You want a what? We don’t have knives!”

The waiters either smother you and know you by name, or sit in the corner and wait for you to approach them — the experience is unique!
Depending on what I want to eat, I go to different places.

Indian
I go to Khana Khazana or Haandi! The food is excellent, but the atmosphere is better at Khyber Pass in Speke Hotel. I have spent many an evening or Sunday afternoon sitting under the rubber tree, watching the day and the people pass by. The staff have been there for years — they still greet me by name and fill me in about any developments.

Pork
The pork sticks at Faze Two are the best. With a cheese and chilly nan and a few beers, there can be no better meal on a Saturday afternoon!

For pork skewers, I head to Kyadondo on Monday evening and wash it down with a couple of beers! Stone Pub in Ntinda also has good pork skewers, but lacks cutlery. But water and soap are availed for customers to wash their hands!

Fillet steak
For really good fillet steak, cook your own. Ugandan’s prefer to cook the meat to a well-done point.

Traditional south African Braai
Protea Hotel serves the full shebang on Wednesdays. Pork ribs, steaks, chops, boerewors, pap (posho to Ugandans), tomato and onion gravy.

Seafood
The seafood buffet served at Serena on Friday evening is excellent and worth its price. It includes fish, lobster, prawns and calamari.

Traditional food
The goat luwumbo here is excellent and the amount of food served could feed an army. The ambiance is typically Ugandan. The service at Ekitoobero is purely Ugandan, but I need a knife. It’s hard for me to eat with only a fork and I can’t use my fingers without messing up my clothes.

Italian
The best pizza in town is at Ciao Bella Pizzeria and Restaurant at Centenary Park, Jinja Road. However, the place is hot, sweaty and the chairs are uncomfortable. The service is slow, but the pizza is great!

Service: So so.
Sound level: Okay.
Prices: Coffee and a snack for two will cost around a tenner.
Parking: On the street.
Wheel chair access: Inaccessible.

While Ban Café can claim to be one of the oldest existing cafés in town, since they first opened, they have never had a face lift. Whether the idea of a dark ill-lit place is meant to be romantic, one can only speculate. What is not in doubt is that the atmosphere here has always struck me as being somewhat lugubrious.

It really is not that difficult to liven up the ambience with a dropped ceiling and creative lighting. And a few more appurtenances here and there would surely do wonders. Then again, there is no accounting for taste, but for what it’s worth, some advice from an interior decorator will probably go a long way in ameliorating the situation and making the place more hospitable and welcome.

Anyway, as expected in any good coffee shop, the choices for this favourite brew are legion and bound to cater for all comers. Whether it be the house coffee, a cappuccino a mocha or café au lait, they are all available and done reasonably well. Not surprisingly, they also have a wide array of roasted and raw coffee beans from different regions of the country and for a reasonable charge, one can get freshly ground coffee beans made in powder form.

Of course, they also serve a selection of juices ranging from the mixed fruit juice, passion, pineapple and even carrot. It goes without saying that no visit to a café would be complete without food and curiously, unlike the trend in other cafes, here there is no such thing as a proper meal like steak and chips or ratatouille. On the other hand, it could be a matter of space being the hindrance, where a fully fledged kitchen is not practical or available.

Hence, the choice of eats is limited to snacks and bites such as pies, samosas, cakes and sandwiches. Not all together what one would call an exciting menu and to say that the bites were filling is just about par for the course. If I were the owner of this establishment, I would strive to be as creative as possible and make sure that my snack menu was the envy of my peers. Typical of Ugandans, they prefer to play it safe and simply have a snack menu that is humdrum and ordinary.
