View Full Version : Japan metro gallery
Mr.Underground June 24th, 2009, 11:14 PM Hi nippon friends,
I open this friend like Japan metro photo gallery.
I love Japan and its cities and I a metro fan too so I am interesting to see all pics about every metro system in Japan.
So nice pics from Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoja, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka and Naha too.
Train, stations, "strange cross", pics of metros vith a view, e.g. above a bridge or on surface.
I ask this because I WANT TO CHANGE MY DESKTOP AND THE WINNER'S PUC, CHOOSEN BY MYSELF, WILL BE MY NEW DESKTOP.
Until today I have had a picture of metro in Ochanomizu and was wonderful, but now it is time to change...
Let start the run for best photo. :)
I give an advice, metro on surface and over bridges are my fav.
Hoping in Tokyo 2016,
cheers from Milan

Here are some Japan Metro photos: http://www.pbase.com/dickh/subways
A couple of my favorites:
First is at the TOBU railway's HIKIFUNE station. The Tokyo Metro Hanzomon subway surfaces here and the trains run out on the TOBU line. On the far left you can see a KEISEI railway train passing. A TOKYU railway train is entering the subway.
http://www.pbase.com/dickh/image/101320225.jpg
Next is at SHINAGAWA station, a large JR and KEIKYU railway station.
The photo shows a KEISEI train running on KEIKYU tracks, entering the TOEI (Tokyo City) subway. A KEIKYU train is in the back ground on a siding.

Top map is too old.
Middle map looks OK
Bottom map is dated 2003.
I count 129 lines. http://www.pbase.com/dickh/image/107237544
Some trains are 15 cars long. Each car is 20 meters. Total length = 300 meters.

None of these three are official.
Since there are various operators with their own networks, they have their own official maps as well.
Subways:
Tokyo Metro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Metro) official map (Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, JR Yamanote Line)
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/3558/tokyometrotm.gif
Toei Subway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Metropolitan_Bureau_of_Transportation) official map (Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, JR Yamanote and Chuo Lines)
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2286/tokyometrotoei.png
Commuter rails:
JR East (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JR_East) official map (JR East lines)
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8973/tokyosuburbanjr.gif
Suica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suica) area official map (Not famous among its users, but it covers nearly all the lines in Greater Tokyo)
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/8699/tokyosuburban.jpg
PS: Is it true???:
- 631 station.
- 119 lines.

- more than 100 difrent types of trains (including Sincansen, monorail, people-movers etc.) (!).
- length of some trains more than 250 m.
Depends on the definition. If we count only subways (most likely, those by Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway) as metro, the stats are much less than these figures.
In Greater Tokyo, however, overground commuter rails play bigger roles than subways. If we include them, the stats can be even bigger than those you quoted.
Another problem is the definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Tokyo_Area#Various_definitions_of_Tokyo.2FKant.C5.8D) of Tokyo. Naturally, the stats would differ greatly depending on the area you count. 23 wards only? Tokyo Metropolis? South Kanto? Something else?
If we count Tokyo Metro+Toei Subway only, there are:
274 stations
13 lines
316 km route length
If we count all the railway lines in South Kanto, there are:
Around 1700 stations
Around 150 lines by around 40 operators
Around 3500 km route length
(Notice South Kanto is not the best definition to represent Greater Tokyo; it includes some sparsely populated mountain villages in western Saitama, while it excludes bed-town communities in southern Ibaraki.)
As Dick H said, some lines of JR East use 15 of 20 m cars, making the total length 300 m.

resot July 19th, 2009, 11:03 AM Show the official metro map. May not be the greatest map but easy to look at one glance. Most of the stations may not be important. Cause I don't normally use them.

New York Morning July 19th, 2009, 12:39 PM Thank u all, friends) FML, uve killed me) Its amazing. I meant Tokyo Metropolis area. But I even did not know that Great Tokyo is so enormous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BosWash
quashlo July 19th, 2009, 05:09 PM ^^BosWash isn't one metropolitan area. It's just a string of metropolitan areas that happen to be close to each other, and someone decided to play connect-the-dots to see how far they could go.
New York Morning July 19th, 2009, 06:43 PM No, I mean Taiheiyō Belt. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiheiy%C5%8D_Belt)
Total population: approx 82.9 million
Its unbelievable) I think soon all Japan terrytory will be one interrupted city. :)
Blackraven July 20th, 2009, 05:36 PM According to wiki, there are more than 20,000 kilometers of rail track all across Japan. Now that is a lot.
*I dunno if that figure is just a conservative estimate but either way, that's a lot of rail track hehe :)

New York Morning July 20th, 2009, 07:12 PM Blackraven, thanx 4 interesting link! :) I like Japanese rail system, a lot of diffrent trains etc, old, new.

Yup, and I think that it's still planned to expand in the years to come hehe :)
P.S.
This may be a subjective thing but what is the most beautiful Japanese train?
I'm kinda hardpressed between the following:

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/5565/img1756a.jpg
4. Nanbu Jukan Railway Kiha 101 railbus
I'd describe her cute rather than beautiful.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8770/railbus96022001k1.jpg
3. Any newer express trains by JR Hokkaido, foreheaded by Kiha 281
Logical rationality makes a charm.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/474/wall7237.jpg
2. Odakyu 60000 Romancecar MSE
Good fusion between luxurity and urbanity.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4377/dscf5624.jpg
1. JR West 500
What else?
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1728/r919ark14ote4q49500.jpg
Worst:
3. JR West Kumoha 102 of Kakogawa Line
The train itself is not a problem at all, but..
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3d/JRW_kumoha102_3551.jpg/1024px-JRW_kumoha102_3551.jpg
2. Nankai 50000 Rapi:t
Not a bad design as an amusement park ride, but as a serious rail link between Kansai Airport and central Osaka...

Wow, what a beauty. Have you been on one before?
but you wanna know what romancecar I think is better? The 50000 series VSE, passengers getting a view from the front of the train, can't beat that!

I do prefer the color of the 60000 MSE though, so imo 50000 with 60000's color would be perfection...well at least till we get to judging the interior of each train!

I love the Fastech 360, but wasn't it just an experimental train?:?
