View Full Version : NT/ DARWIN - #UC: Waterfront Redevelopment - mixed use
SPQRSPQR July 12th, 2009, 03:04 PM The pictures of Darwin Waterfront look good, it's turning out well. I miss working on the project, but I don't miss the ridiculous amount of travel involved.
I lodged the DA for the next stage of Darwin Waterfront late last year (November 2008), I wonder if it's been approved?
Did it include the 5 storey office building that has upset the local branch of the Property Council? The NT Government had promised CBD property owners that the Waterfront would not dilute the office market in the CBD proper.
Danubis July 13th, 2009, 09:32 AM It's turned out very impressive... better then cairns, and cairns is good.
Burden July 13th, 2009, 12:56 PM ^All 3 northern Australian main cities have prestigious waterfront developments now :)

Yes. It was not planned to be the same type of office building as is available in the CBD proper however, so would not be seeking the same type of tenants.
Oriolus July 24th, 2009, 07:26 AM There was a little feature on Darwin Waterfront on Getaway last night. I didn't realise you had to pay to use the wave pool - apparentely its $5 to get in. Anyway you can watch the video here - http://getaway.ninemsn.com.au/videos/ - might have to browse back a few pages if you reading this at a later date.
GMAC September 4th, 2009, 12:30 PM Was in Darwin this week and took a few pics around waterfront. I have to say that Im quite impressed, although I was a little disappointed that I didnt have any money on me at the time so I could try out the wave pool cos it looks like awesome fun. Love the footbridge and glass lifts connecting the area to the city, and I think it will do wonders for the Smith St Mall as far as encouraging more activity the length of the mall.
Excuse the pics, some of them are shite quality but you get the idea.

wilkiebarkid September 5th, 2009, 02:37 AM Thanks for the pics GMAC. It does look very good. Can't wait for the other stages to commence.
Mandelbrot September 6th, 2009, 10:57 AM great photos, thanks or sharing. I want to see this for myself one day.
OptomistOne September 7th, 2009, 05:49 AM The photos are reallu helpful as I am planning to fly to Adelaide, catch the Ghan to Alice Springs and then though to Darwin, then back to Hobart by air. The Waterfront looks like a good place to stay. I will have to check out the various hotel websites for any deals!

I noticed the other day that they've started advertising for expressions of interest on Wharf 2 of the development.
This is the part of the development that I managed the design and submission of the DA for, and the quality of the design is fantastic as we used Bates Smart as architects.

Many future stages - not anticipated to be fully complete until 2020. However, there may be construction lulls between stages.
Does anyone know if there is anything actually being built at the moment?
They may be working on the lock in the sea wall for the marina, or maybe site works for Stage 2?

Yeah, Wharf 2 is a very nice design - it's the DA I lodged though, so I have to say that! :wink2:
Unfortunately Wharf 4 can't go quite as high as 30 storeys because of height limits - more like 6 or 7 I think! But there is plenty of opportunity for 30 storey towers around Stokes Hill.

the chances of building out Govt House's view = NIL so wharf 4 will be very height limited.
ken_adams November 30th, 2009, 01:08 PM I love the idea of a wave pool.... As far as I know this would be one of the first public wave pools in Australia.... right ?
Obiously there are wave pools in the theme parks in Queensland but apart from that I dont know of any others in Australia.
But from the photo's the waves look very small, it looks like its really just designed for small kids.
crawf December 1st, 2009, 04:26 AM There are already plenty of wave pools around the country, though this one might be the first outdoor wave pool
ken_adams December 1st, 2009, 11:38 AM where are the other wave pools in Aus (besides the theme parks on the GC) ?
I've never seen any.
And if there are some are the waves better than what they are in Darwin ?

1.8M waves are plenty big enough tbh. most of the people in there aren't pro surfers, so 6ft waves are a decent enough size. they are surprisingly powerful too.
you can get a decent body surf/body board ride when it's not crowded.
there is a longish run of smaller waves, which is a pretty decent design. you don't really want to be dumped onto shallow pebblecrete. the 1.8m waves tend to break in about 1 - 1.2m of water.

Holy Frog May 12th, 2012, 07:43 AM Good to see Charles Darwin University is opening a Business School in Wharf Two:
CDU plans for new Business School at Darwin’s Waterfront development
CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover and CEO of Toga Group, Alan Vidor sign the agreement to develop a new CDU Business School at Darwin's Waterfront
2/05/2012
Charles Darwin University has announced a significant partnership with The Toga Group and the Northern Territory Government to develop a new tertiary education facility at Wharf Two of the Darwin Waterfront.
The new development will see the CDU Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) Business schools move to the Waterfront site to become the new Charles Darwin University Business School.
CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover said today that the world-class purpose built Business School would be the new home of 600 students across Business, Hospitality and Tourism.
“The relocation of the Business faculty to the Waterfront facility will greatly enhance the potential for work integrated learning and the development of closer partnerships and collaborations with government and the business community,” Professor Glover said.
“The University intends to combine VET and Higher Education business activities, restructuring programs to make them more accessible and more relevant to the dominant service, tourism and resources industries in the Northern Territory.
“We also hope to extend current programs to include specialist courses in hospitality, hotel management, tourism and travel linked to an alliance with Toga Hospitality (part of the Toga Group of companies) and in conjunction with private sector partners.”
The University will lease between 3500 m2 and 4000 m2 of space in a new purpose-constructed building, expected to be completed by mid-2014.
“The facility will support contemporary teaching and learning practice, as well as integrating into the Waterfront development and establishing a central CDU presence within the city of Darwin,” Professor Glover said.
“The move will also provide room for growth as both domestic and international student numbers increase over time, and as the new Business School develops linkages and networks into the surrounding business and government community.”
Professor Glover said that no activity currently taking place on the Palmerston campus would be relocated to the Waterfront precinct from the Palmerston campus.
“In fact it will be necessary to continue to expand VET hospitality and tourism programs at Palmerston campus to support the applied and sub-Bachelor pathway programs that are critical to much of the expansion at the Waterfront campus,” Professor Glover said.

Wow, I put the original DA for this stage through back in 2008/09, great to see they're finally going to proceed. This design by Bates Smart was one of four design options chosen from a select tender process.
CDU Business School is an excellent option as we faced a lot of opposition in proposing a commercial building as part of the plan - the feeling was that it created competition with the CBD office market.
As for the timber, it is likely not traditional timber. We investigated a wide variety of "timber-composite" products at the time that were robust, low maintenance cladding materials, i.e. Innowood (http://www.innowood.com/).
Eastern37 May 14th, 2012, 01:46 PM Looks great! Really needs some greenery though! It's a bit bland/sterile looking!
