Looks no better or worse than any other building being planned in the area. I like it, very handy for the Aussie Nash pub and the Broadway too.

;) a bit of a monstrosity is better than a total monstrosity. compared to GC1 this is a masterpiece.

I like it. Those units will have an intersting view of the city and stadium.

I actually think it's ok. It's really the sort of thing needed around there - imposing and fairly modern. That's a VERY prime site, I might add!

As this whole area develops, I think the really important thing is street activation. If that's done well, then ugly buildings will matter so much less.

I tend to agree. I think it'll hep the Gabba precinct become more of a "destination" rather than a place to drive or bus through. Personally I think Woolloongabba would be more interesting if it was like Toowong, a shopping and business destination.

Agreed with most of the other comments here. Not a masterpiece but definately a positive step towards a renewed Wooloongabba.

It did used to be so for the entire Southside of Brisbane, hence names like Broadway, etc.

Those podiums smack of un-articulated bulk. Other than that both tower components will be an excellent addition to the Gabba skyline!

Beggars can't be choosers and we've been begging for anything lately. Good to see some developments being planned again!

I'm a fan. Not groundbreaking in design, but decent for the area, and as someone else said, it looks like bloody brilliant compared to the disaster that is GC1.

THE Woolloongabba skyline looks set for transformation with two development applications being considered for multi-storey towers in the near-city suburb.

The applications are the first to be considered under Brisbane City Council's new Woolloongabba Centre Neighbourhood Plan.

If both are approved there would be a 20-storey and a 17-storey tower in the suburb.

Council development assessment chair Amanda Cooper said the new plan for the suburb would help transform it from a light industrial area into an urban centre.

``It is really fairly degraded (at the moment),'' she said. The area needed a central focus and plans were to allow developments up to 20 storeys in ``the core precinct'' - an area bounded by Ipswich Rd, Stanley St, Wellington Rd and Balaclava St.

Buildings would have to be at least 2000sq m and stepped down to meet surrounding building heights.

Cr Cooper said the first two development applications under the new plan could provide, homes, jobs and entertainment in the area.

The first is Gabba One, a 20-storey mixed-use development on the corner of Stanley St, Wellington Rd and Trafalgar St.

The proposal is for 113 residential units, a shop, restaurant and office.

Council documents reveal the 3250sq m site, which currently consists of five two-storey buildings and operates as a photographic and framing business, is owned by Bryna Pty Ltd. Plans are for 19,500sq m of space and 100 per cent site coverage. It is about 50m from the Gabba stadium.

Another application has been lodged for a project of 10 to 17 storeys.

The plan is for shops, office space and a restaurant on the site in Stanley St, as well as a hotel and car park.

Cr Cooper said the Council's vision was for Woolloongabba to rival urban renewal areas like Teneriffe and Fortitude Valley. But Council would ensure the area retained its heritage values.

It seemed like BCC were fairly happy with this, aside from queries for a few things, but I can't seem to see anything about whether it has been approved or not.

Interesting. Could it be that they want to lodge it when the capped Infrastructure charges come in? A lot of big developers are doing this at the moment. They could save hundreds of thousands in headworks charges if they withdraw and lodge again in a month or so.

Its a real headache for us and will be a MASSIVE headache for Council planners.

I think they picked the spot really well. Great place for mixed use.
