View Full Version : Islamic Classical Architecture
syedahsaninam June 27th, 2009, 01:25 AM Islamic architecture encompasses a wide range of both secular and religious styles from the foundation of Islam to the present day, influencing the design and construction of buildings and structures in Islamic culture. the building show the wealth of the person that lives in it. The principal Islamic architectural types are: the Mosque, the Tomb, the Palace and the Fort. From these four types, the vocabulary of Islamic architecture is derived and used for buildings of lesser importance such as public baths, fountains and domestic architecture.

true.most turkish mosques are built in byzantine architecture.btw, we have neocalssical mosques in turkey lol.
syedahsaninam June 28th, 2009, 05:22 AM ^^ Oh! I didn't know the blue mosque was byzantine architecture. Sorry!
ainttelling June 28th, 2009, 06:31 AM It was build in Byzantine style by a Turkish architect (Turkish school differs from Greek school, btw). So it's not really Byzantine architecture.

alam July 20th, 2009, 02:21 AM The Chinese mosque is indeed more Tibetan in style than Islamic, except for arabic calligraphic inscriptions and there being no statues..
The Blue mosque is I would say an evoltion of Byzantine architecture. HagiaSophia represents a true example of byzantine architecture. However, note that the inclusion of Minarets was a latter modification. also, most mosques in Turkey have compounded domes and are heavily adorned with Islamic architectural elements, such as mini domes, arches, Makaranas, and calligraphy.
Shah faisal Mosque in Pakistan is an example of contemporary Islamic architecture.
alam July 20th, 2009, 02:23 AM Not intending to divert people or anything, I would like to include a link to another thread on Islamic architecture on this forum, which has been building over the last few years:

Islamic Architecture is not about which region its from! It is based on any architecture but with a large blend of Islamic triditions. like example, the hagea sopeia is origanally Byzantine but after the ottomans claimed Istanbul, It was renovated into a different architechure. I'm preety sure the Hagea Sopeia is not the same ever since the ottomans came!

....?
First time i hear this theory!!Is it yours..?:)
Mate the only difference of Hageia Sophia after Konstantinoupolis was conquered by the Ottoman is that they built the minarets.
And of course they distroyed the interior mosaics etc and replaced them with Islamic ones.
The main building is exactly the same as it was built by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles in 537 A.D.
Not only the Ottomans didnt change anything about Hageia Sophia but they used it as a model for all theyr mosques thereafter with the architect Koca Mimar Sinan Ağa(a Greek Orthodox who converted to Islam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimar_Sinan ) sawing the way.
My friend this is a really nice thread but i think you should stick with the facts.
Fantasizing stories is no good.
Ill try to post some of my favourite Mosques as well.

it means that its classical. it involves architecture from various cultures but its still has a mix of arabic and persian architecture!
siamu maharaj August 7th, 2009, 08:09 AM This thread isn't exactly about Islamic architecture, but more a mere random collection of mosques found in Google images, except a couple of other buildings. Very misleading. And a lot of architecture in here isn't Islamic at all by any stretch. Calling Hagia Sophia Islamic architecture is laughable just due to the fact that it was converted to a mosque. This thread makes no sense.

Now this is a better post. But would you call Hagia Sophia inspired buildings Islamic architecture? Isn't it more Byzantine? Unless someone can point out exactly what was the Islamic addition to it. I'm guessing either calligraphy or some sort of tiles inside.
Brizer August 7th, 2009, 08:22 AM "Classical" in this context means they are excellent examples of the style. Even though there is huge variation in form, features and details, each is of excellent quality.
Origin of the word is from the Hellenic period of Ancient Greek art, ie, the Classical period, which is considered the peak period of achievement. The word has had its meaning extended to mean "outstanding", "excellent" and "the best".
The word is widely used: a classic movie, a classic wine, a classic car, a classic beauty, etc., but can be abused by too easy application by gushing enthusiasts.
If I had to choose 3 only examples as the most 'classical' of Islamic architecture they would be the Maidan at Isfahan, the Ottoman mosques by Sinan and the Mughal style(or your preferred spelling) Taj Mahal. They are not the same but may share some features however each is the peak of achievement and have a beauty that is generally acknowledged but they also never fail to take your breath away no matter how many times you see them.
Postscript: and then someone goes and shows me examples such as those Timurid and Seljuk beauties: they are clearly 'classical' 'classics' of their style, and of the Islamic style in general.
Brizer August 7th, 2009, 08:37 AM True: the Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian church and converted to a mosque by the Ottomans, but since 1927(?) has been more of a museum/heritage building. Given its influence on Ottoman architecture it is legitimately included in any discussion of Islamic architecture, specifically, Ottoman architecture, so while it is inaccurate to label it 'Islamic' - it is Byzantine - it is not "laughable".
Islam was most adept at adapting local styles of architecture to its own purposes in countries it conquered which accounts for the huge variation in styles known collectively as "Islamic".
Abu 3Leish August 9th, 2009, 02:29 AM ^^ also it is easy to realize and point out that most of the Algerian mosques posted here were previous churches and cathedrals...regardless the architecture is amazing and truly divine

Dude! Hagia sophia is no more! Its blue mosque! and it is islamic architecture because it has been extremely renovated ever since the ottomans came! the only thing that is still byzantine about the blue mosque is the dome! or maybe not even that!
Brizer August 9th, 2009, 05:45 AM Dude! The Hagia Sophia lives!! It is a separate building from the nearby so-called 'Blue Mosque'. The Blue Mosque is properly called the Mosque of Sultan Ahmet (Sultanahmet Camii), designed by the architect Sedefhar Mehmet Aga and completed in 1616.
No serious structural changes were made to the Hagia Sophia by the Ottomans apart from adding 4 minarets and covering the Christian mosaics.
The Ottomans so much admired the building that they used it as the basis for the design of their own places of worship.
NB: there are about 10 mosques called 'blue mosque' throughout the Islamic world.
syedahsaninam August 9th, 2009, 08:03 AM ^^ My bad! but my point was that hagia sophia is changed! not the same any more! not fully byzantine architecture anymore!
*UofT* August 9th, 2009, 08:22 AM ^^ The minarets were added, Im pretty sure it didn't have those before. But the Turks really did beautifully decide on "thin" minarets instead of fatter one's.
The Thin minarets are personally one of my favourties. The Ottoman arches are lovely too especially the one's in the Grand Mosque of Makkah.
siamu maharaj August 9th, 2009, 10:19 AM Dude! Hagia sophia is no more! Its blue mosque! and it is islamic architecture because it has been extremely renovated ever since the ottomans came! the only thing that is still byzantine about the blue mosque is the dome! or maybe not even that!
What the hell are you talking about? You don't even know that the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia aer TWO DIFFERENT BUILDINGS. Goddammit, that's a new low. The Hagia Sohpia dones't exist. You gave me a laugh. Jesus Christ.
Brizer August 9th, 2009, 11:39 AM The Hagia Sophia remains the great architectural achievement of the Byzantine era. The brilliance of the concept of adapting a square arch to support a round dome is extraordinary. The stunning interior space remains breathtaking. Knowing a good building when they saw one, the Ottomans only added the minarets and they do not alter the structural integrity of the main building. Any alteration to the interior is largely superficial and not entirely irreversible.
They could use it as a casino, a flophouse or a bowling alley but it would still be one of the great architectural leaps in history and it will forever remain Byzantine.
As I pointed out in post 56 the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque/Sultanahmet Camii are TWO SEPARATE and DISTINCT buildings, similar in appearance b/c one copied the form of the other and even located quite near each other, but they are NOT the same.
REPEAT: the Hagia Sophia is LARGELY THE SAME BUILDING as it ever was except that the dome fell in an earthquake some years after it was built so it was rebuilt with slightly more convex form to strengthen it structurally and so it has remained for the past 1500 or so years.

I know it was a mistake, and stop with namecalling. What I'm trying to say is that if you don't even know about the buildings you're talking about, how the hell can you comment on them? Pretty much shows your knowledge.
siamu maharaj August 10th, 2009, 12:28 PM The Hagia Sophia remains the great architectural achievement of the Byzantine era.
Exactly what I've been trying to say all along. Hagia Sophia is Byzantine architecture, not Islamic. And any building that copies it is Byzantine too.
syedahsaninam August 10th, 2009, 08:35 PM ^^ And all i'm trying to say is that Ayasofya Mosque is islamic architecture. It mostly islamic architecture now! there is still a bit of Byzantine left but mostly its islamic architecture!
Sparxter August 10th, 2009, 11:59 PM I never thought there were such beautifull Mosques on this planet. I really love the colors and the peace that is coming from these buildings.
Wonderfull topic!
Brizer August 11th, 2009, 12:41 AM Amazing feats of logic, guys!!!
The Hagia Sophia is and will remain, Byzantine in style even if it is adorned with Islamic colours, symbols, additions, etc, and even if its name is changed in form if not in substance.
The mosques of the Ottoman period, built 800-1000 yrs after the Hagia Sophia, even though based in form on the Hagia Sophia, are Ottoman in style, the Turkish variation of Islamic.
It's not up for disputation, argument and pontification by lesser souls such as us, it is the established and accepted protocol by art and architecture historians, professionals, academics, practioners, educators, etc., of all religious persuasions.

The Shah Jahan Mosque was built in the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It is located in Thatta, Sindh province, Pakistan. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage and has been to preserved since its entry.
In the town of Thatta (100 km / 60 miles from Karachi) itself, there is famous Shahjahani Mosque with its beautiful architecture. This mosque was built in 1647 during the reign of Mughal King Shah Jahan, also known as the builder King. The mosque is built with red bricks with blue coloured glaze tiles probably imported from another Sindh's town of Hala. The mosque has overall 100 domes and it is world's largest mosque having such number of domes. It has been built keeping acoustics in mind. A person speaking inside one end of the dome can be heard at the other end.

The construction on the Bhong mosque located in Pakistan continued continuously from 1932 to 1982. It is said that the landlord built this mosque because of a dream he had and he believed that he will die if he ever stopped construction on the mosque. It is also said that he died within a week after construction was stopped on the mosque in 1982.
Sons and grandsons of Rais Ghazi Muhammad Indhar still look after the mosque and on my last visit to mosque I saw construction work is still under way.

Jünyus Brütüs August 13th, 2009, 11:58 PM Now this is a better post. But would you call Hagia Sophia inspired buildings Islamic architecture? Isn't it more Byzantine? Unless someone can point out exactly what was the Islamic addition to it. I'm guessing either calligraphy or some sort of tiles inside.
Well, some of the Ottoman mosques(especially large ones) based on Hagia Sofia, but as a whole Ottoman mosques have it's own style since they mixed many architectural styles. "Round domes" concept comes from Byzantine churches, for example Anatolian Seljuks were using conical domes while Ottomans never used it. But they used conical supporters around domes, used neo-classical details on windows or art-deco, baroque style on bases.
So it's not right to call Ottoman mosques as Byzantine style since Byzantine architecture is not the only one they inspired. Ottoman Turks were very advanced on architecture and created their own style by following the civilizations that lived before them.
Here is the Ortaköy mosque which is built in baroque style
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/80/Ortak%C3%B6y_camii.jpg/800px-Ortak%C3%B6y_camii.jpg
Dolmabahçe mosque, this one in classical style of late Ottoman period.
http://www.resimsakla.com/data/media/496/dolmabahce_camii.JPG
Or here is ancient Anatolian inspired Teşvikiye Mosque, a neo-classical example.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/tr/thumb/c/c6/Teskmosque.jpg/406px-Teskmosque.jpg
But like you said some Ottoman/Turkish mosques are completely based on Hagia Sofia such as famous Blue Mosque. But still it's better to call it Ottoman style since Ottomans were also same people who ruled same lands and practiced same culture, architecture..

In terms of Islamic architecture, that is the arch of the Abbassids of Baghdad (of course, there is an earlier prototype that can be found in Sassanid architecture)...the "Indo" part is an appropriation that happened way after the fact.
A beautiful appropriation/interpretation, none the less.

Sure, and the arch was invented someplace else, etc. etc. All architecture contains elements taken from pre-existing styles, so I fail to see why the Indo-Islamic architecture is especially considered an "appropriation".

It's not especially considered an appropriation (I would dare say that Islamic architecture, in general, is one big beautiful appropriation) but in your post you called this arch Indo-Persian, and in that way you had bypassed the originator and named the arch after a later-interpretation of itself....It's like calling ancient Greek architecture "Neo-Classical", even though the latter style came about in the 18th century!
I know, it's just an arch, but I'm nitpicking :P

Hurts you that much to say "Mughal" architecture?
Must hurt even more to see Quranic inscriptions all over the Taj I presume?
Or am I wrong here?
ProudArabian August 26th, 2009, 04:15 AM There is nothing really called indo persian architecture. all these mughal architecture we see in india are actually persian/islamic architecture.

*UofT* August 26th, 2009, 06:24 AM ^^ Lahore's old city is one of the best maintained Mughal sites in the world.
Shahjahan was a Mughal Emperor and the Taj was built in Mughal India under his rule. Saying Indo-persian is basically saying Mughal but its interesting that you use that word in an attempt to take away the credit that belongs to Muslims of the Subcontinent. Mughals were obviously a mixture of Iranian/Aryan/Turkic. Which is what a lot of modern day Pakistanis are in a way. Punj ab in Persian means 5 water or land of 5 rivers.
Don't believe me Shahjahan was Mughal? Here this is how the world remembers him.
Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Shah Jahan I (full title: Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Abu'l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu'llah [Firdaus-Ashiyani]) (also spelled Shah Jehan, Shahjehan, Urdu: شاه *جہاں; January 5, 1592 – January 22, 1666) was the ruler of the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent from 1628 until 1658. The name Shah Jahan comes from Persian meaning "King of the World." He was the fifth Mughal ruler after Babur, Humayun, Akbar, and Jahangir. While young, he was a favourite of Akbar.
Marathaman August 26th, 2009, 07:32 AM Seriously UofT, please spare your BS race theories for the skybar, where they will mercifully not be recorded for posterity.
Every kid knows that the Mughals built the Taj. Now please, let people post their pictures.
syedahsaninam August 26th, 2009, 07:40 AM I think you're just feeling jealous because the Taj isn't in Pakistan.:pet: and India gets the best of everything including Islamic architecture.

Hiran Minar is set in peaceful evirons near Lahore in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. It was constructed by Emperor Jehangir as a monument to Mansraj, one of his pet deers
The structure consists of a large, almost-square water tank with an octagonal pavilion in its center, built during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan; a causeway with its own gateway connects the pavilion with the mainland and a 100-foot-high minar, or minaret.

Shrine of Bibi Jawindi at Uch Sharif, Pakistan
Uch or Uch Sharif is located in 75 km from Bahawalpur in Punjab province, Pakistan. Uch is also known as "Alexandria at the Head of the Punjab", is an historical city in Pakistan.
Uch Sharif is a very old town. It is believed that it was founded in 500 BCE. Some historians believe that Uch was there even before the advent of Bikramjit when Jains and Buddhists ruled over the area. At the time of invasion by Alexander the Great, Uch was under Hindu rule." Some historians believe that Mithankot or Chacharan Sharif was the settlement of Alexandria founded by Alexander the Great.
In 710, Muhammad bin Qasim conquered the city and during the Muslim period Uch was one of the centres of Islamic studies of South Asia. There are several tombs of famous mystics (Sufis) in Uch, notably the tombs of Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari and his family. These structures were joined by a series of domed tombs; the first is said to have been built for Baha’ al-Halim by his pupil, the Suharwardiya Sufi saint Jahaniyan Jahangasht (1307-1383) the second for the latter’s great grant daughter, Bibi Jawindi, in 1494 and the third for the latter’s architect.

The Shish Mahal or Hall of Mirrors in the Lahore Fort. The walls are adorned with intricate tile work inlaid with mirrors. It is part of the Naulakha enclosure that served as a pivate quarter or Harem for women. I remember being allowed into this hall as a child, but now a days the government officials are warey of allowing any members of the public actually entering this majestic hall.

Chaukundi (Urdu: چوکنڈی) tombs, are attributed to Jokhio and Baloch tribes and were build between 15th and 18th centuries. It is situated 29 km east of Karachi on N-5 National Highway near Landhi Town. The Chaukundi tombs are remarkable for the elaborate and exquisite carving; the style of architecture is not only typical to the region of Sindh but unique in the sense that it is no where else to be found in the Islamic world.
In early 20th century Scholars were attracted by these peculiar type of Graveyards in Sindh and Baluchistan with their orientation from South to North. These graves are constructed in buff sand stone. Their carved decoration presents exquisite craftsmanship. These graves are constructed single or some time from two to eight raised on a common platform .Their primary sarcophagus having six vertical slabs as two long slabs stands on each sides of the grave and covers the body and rest of two vertical slabs covers the head and foot side. These Six slabs are covered by second sarcophagus and having six more vertical slabs on it but similar in size to make this grave as pyramid in shape .This upper (second sarcophagus) is further covered four or five horizontally slabs and the top most (third) Sarcophagus is set vertically with its northern end carved in to knob knows as crown or turban. These tombs are embellished besides geometrical hoard and motifs with figural representation such as mounted horsemen, hunting scene, arms, jewellery etc.

That's old Delhi my friend. It has just about as much history behind it as the Jama Masjid. The Delhi government needs to shine some light on this entire area and uplift the entire area to keep it from crumbling.

Only a few kilometres away from Córdoba, was built in 936 a palatine city. Was completely destroyed by a rebellion in 1010 (in the fitna that ended with the Cordobas caliphate). Was found in 1911 and the archeologic works go on since then. It's said the Alhambra was nothing compared to the richness of Medina Azahara. The area is more or less 1.500 x 750 metres.

WeimieLvr November 1st, 2009, 10:59 PM Atlanta's Fox Theater (1929) incorporates elements of both Islamic and Egyptian architecture. The Moorish design is evident in the minarets, onion dome, shapes of windows and doors, lattice work, and decorative patterns. It was originally designed as a temple for the Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine.
