Facts about Drammen
- County capital of Buskerud County
- Located 40 km southwest of Oslo, where Drammenselva meets the fjord
- Population: 60.000 in municipality, approx 90.000 in metro
- Important road, railway and seaport juncture
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n125/kjetilbalog/SCC/Oversikt1.jpg
Short history of Drammen:
Drammen was founded in 1811, when Bragernes, on the north shore of Drammenselva, was joined with Strømsø and Tangen on the south shore into one municipality. Over the years the city have incorporated more of the surrounding areas (Skoger (to the south) and Åssiden (to the west) and covers today an area of 137 square km.
The main industry was for many years paper production along the river as well as other mechanical, textile and manufacturing industries. (This the historical reason why Drammen still is below the national average education level). Especially the textile industry imported during the 1960s very many unskilled laborers from Turkey to work in their mills. Today, people of turkish decent is the biggest minority group in Drammen.
In this tread I will try to cover both current projects, give an overview over projects dating back to around 2000 (in the city center) and a broader overview of the ongoing city redevelopment (including Veipakke Drammen).

mjoks007 June 28th, 2009, 07:09 PM Nice with a Drammen thread :) Whats happen to the plans for Sundland? I know that the stadium plans have been putten on ice, and the proposal for the area looked like , just another apartment surburb...
kjetilab June 29th, 2009, 12:52 AM I took a quick look at the project website (http://romeiendom.no/article.php?articleID=21962&rootCategoryID=2245), and nothing have happened regarding Sundland and Gulskogen hageby in long time. The stadium was supposed to be the "locomotive" in the development...
kjetilab July 15th, 2009, 09:00 PM This update is long overdue as the pictures are several weeks old by now...

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n125/kjetilbalog/SCC/Sund01.jpg
Øvre Sund Bru is the city ring's missing link and will complete (some expansion from 2 to 4 lanes remains) the road system in the inner city.
mjoks007 July 15th, 2009, 10:37 PM Thanks for the update:okay:
Looks like Drammens city-development take a pretty urban direction, thats nice to see.
kjetilab July 16th, 2009, 12:13 AM Thanks for the update:okay:
Looks like Drammens city-development take a pretty urban direction, thats nice to see.
There are lots of underutilized plots in the city center, so very much of the last year's development have been on plots earlier used as parking or abandoned industry.
mjoks007 August 16th, 2009, 01:20 AM Hope its ok that I contribute to the thread?
http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af172/mjoks007/nsb-skole.jpg
kjetilab August 17th, 2009, 01:08 PM Strømsø bydel is to become a showcase for environmentally friendly city development.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n125/kjetilbalog/SCC/strms.jpg
And the project for transforming Strømsø Torg (just south of Bybrua in that picture) was ofically launched today by the mayor. The project have a price tag of 100 million NOK.

And...
The Airport Express train (Flytoget) have finally arrived in Drammen. From Sunday 30. August, their western terminus will be Drammen. The train will use around 60 minutes from Drammen to Gardermoen, and will have 2 departures every hour (3 later this year).

IceCheese August 31st, 2009, 06:21 PM You're doing a nice job on this thread. Just wan't you to know it's highly appriciated, though none of us have really contributed much here.
You're giving a nice and neutral presentation of the projects. If I were to make a thread like this of my hometown, I would probably use half of the space ranting and wining about the decisions i didn't agree too.
Just a question. With the arrival of the airport express train, is Gardermoen now the closest airport to Drammen, or is it still faster to travel from Torp?
kjetilab August 31st, 2009, 11:43 PM Its pretty much the same. By train, Torp is also around 1 hour away (not included the bus from the station to the airport terminal). The completion of Bærumstunnelen and the Barkåker-Tønsberg parcel won't change the difference much either.
kjetilab September 9th, 2009, 12:01 PM Papirbredden, the building that houses the University College of Buskerud and the city library, needs to expand. Developer Entra Eiendom wants to build between 15.000 and 18.000 on the adjancent parking lot. (current building is 21.000 sqm). They hope to attract research institutions, Colleges (HiBU, HiT and BI) and other public services.

Lpo (http://www.lpo.no), the architect behind NAV-bygget is hired by Union Eiendom to draw another project on Union. On the adjacent plot Union Eiendom wants to develop 25.000 sqm of office.
If someone wants to post some pictures from the LPO site (http://www.lpo.no/prosjekter/groenland-55-article261-110.html), you're more than welcome.

IceCheese September 18th, 2009, 02:09 AM I think it looks very good, and the location is also nice. It will also improve the area with another planed river-crossing!
If someone wants to post some pictures from the LPO site, you're more than welcome.
What, you're getting lazy now? Not good! You have commited yourself to keeping this thread, and you should know we all have great expectations of you!

The river crossing, Øvre Sund Bru, is currently under construction and will be completed by 2011. They're doing the foundation and on-land concrete work around now.
IceCheese September 18th, 2009, 02:50 AM Well, that's when you know why I have more than twice as many posts as you:nuts:
kjetilab October 4th, 2009, 03:25 PM A new residential project in the city center is up for sale these days. So far 11 out of the 29 apartments have been sold, and construction is expected to start in early 2010.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n125/kjetilbalog/SCC/Rmersvei02.jpg
The five storey building will be buildt in a style similar to an adjacent building, have a small playground in the backyard as well as a 320 sqm rooftop terrace.
3 smaller wooden houses will be torn down to the protests from protectionist (one of them was on the City's yellow list IIRC).

mjoks007 October 4th, 2009, 03:39 PM ^^Looks pretty good.
Just have to ask. Ive seen renders for Sundland before which seems to be stopped some years ago.
Do you know if this: http://alt.as/prosjekt.php?id=21 are a new plans (looks really good IMO) or just a proposal from earlier?
kjetilab October 4th, 2009, 03:49 PM I agree. Those renders looks pretty good, but I don't know if they are older or newer. Latest news (http://dt.no/article/20091003/NYHET/267422269) was yet another delay, but I'm really looking forward to see the regulation plan proposal when its made public...
UrbanLife October 4th, 2009, 04:35 PM Quite a few nice projects! Drammen has had an incredible improvment the last years, and good to see they'll keep it up! Hadn't seen the Sundland renderings before - looks good. Let's hope they'll work it out..

Þróndeimr November 25th, 2009, 12:41 PM ^^ nice webpage, makes it fun to explore!
kjetilab December 2nd, 2009, 10:21 PM A new office/retail building will go under construction on Bragernes in february 2010. The building will be 5 stories tall and contain 11.000 sqm. Several older buildings will be torn down, including a somewhat preservable building that used to be the "Trikkestall" in Drammen (for the Trolley-buses).
Sparebanken Øst is the developer and will move to the building when completed. So far, around 75% of the leaseable area is rented.

The plot they wish to develop is located between the city park and the river, along Øvre Strandgate. A few buildings (including a somewhat preservable one) will be demolished, while others (some "Drammenshus") will be integrated into the new complex.
The current hotel will be renovated or torn down to make room for 10.000 sqm of office, perferably a hq of some kind.

Arctic Delight February 10th, 2010, 03:51 AM Good job, Drammen!
kjetilab February 10th, 2010, 02:45 PM Drammen got some nice new buildings, but the backyard of Comfort hotel really is tasteless.
Agreed. Let's hope it gets better when the summer comes. I think there's some kind of fountain under the snow. And since the backyard/plaza is the main entrance to Union Scene they ought to make it more representative.
kjetilab February 22nd, 2010, 01:17 AM I've previously mentioned (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=41399870&postcount=8) that Strømsø is to become a showcase for environmentally friendly city development. Well, now the results from the architectural competition is in. There are 40 proposals that are on display in the old railway station building. During spring a winner will be chosen by a jury, and the proposal will be further refined.
I'll first give a summary, and then, a little later go into some of the proposals in more detail (and hopefully provide some pictures of the areas in question).

kjetilab February 23rd, 2010, 03:01 PM There are quite a few proposals, so I will dustribute them over several posts.
Some of the proposals are misrepresented both by quality of images and quantity. That is mine and the lack of space in the old station waiting rooms fault. I've only got images from 20 out of the 40 proposals

Ingenioren February 24th, 2010, 03:03 PM I really like this, waiting in patience for more proposals - i know Norwegians generally think it's a bad idea to build tall next to rivers or lakes, but one can make a really cool skyline with only a few slightly taller buildings this way if the design is good:
Ref, one of my favourites in europe, 3 nice buildings makes the difference, even if there are shitty buildings there aswell - if Drammen could get something simular it would enhance the image of a reinventing cutting edge river-city in growth
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3460/3856794385_b9b795a65e_b.jpg
It's not that hard to make a cute little skyline look great :)
kjetilab February 24th, 2010, 03:33 PM An advantage with Strømsø is that any shadows from highrises along the river will only fall on the river itself. And since there really isn't any view over the river from street level today (due to the railway embankment) there's not much to be lost from such a development.

Þróndeimr February 26th, 2010, 05:44 PM Some interesting and above all, spectacular proposals here! The most spectacular ones are, sadly, very unrealistic science-fiction-movie like proposals though...
Mulefisk February 27th, 2010, 04:15 PM Intersting! My favorites are 1, 2 and 6, though I think they could allow for some towers close to the station. The rest however are either not urban enough, or like Christian said, just unrealistic science fiction dreams.
kjetilab April 19th, 2010, 01:05 PM Today the winning proposals of the Futurebuilt were announced.
Naturally, only one of the winners (there were 4) have been presented in this tread.
I will post pictures/renderings as well as some short exerpts from the jury. My camera battery went dead, so not many pictures from the ceremony itself (shame on me). Will post what I got shortly.
Winner:
Look to Strømsø, by Norconsult and Alliance Arkitekter

Mulefisk April 19th, 2010, 01:33 PM Looks like a great winner. It's good that Drammen is going with one that has high exploitation.

Osloborger April 19th, 2010, 08:03 PM The project looks fine, but I am having a problem with the no car policy. This is a weakness (IMO) that many inner city projects suffer from. With a maximum number of parking lots equal to 0.6 per apartment, many inhabitants are unable to own a car.
Not having the possibility to own a car is not modern, just low standard. I don't have a problem with trying to reduce car usage, but eliminating it altogether is an ill-advised step to take. How will you accommodate your friends and relatives coming over, in their cars, for Christmas or other occasions?
Roads and parking are a vital part of the infrastructure and once the roads and buildings are built, it is virtually impossible to change the capacity. Traffic can easily, and dynamically, be regulated by setting an appropriate parking fee (not on private residential parking of course.)
In the near future, urban cars will be nearly non-polluting, noiseless and small.

Well, luckily there are also people who see things different than you out there. I guess you see areas like "Grünerløkka" as a failure when coming to urban planing. But you see, this is what new urbanism is all about, and I'm sorry too say, it has come to stay!
For visitors to the area, surely there will be all the short-term parking they need (and probably some parking houses as well). For the rest, well. You just got to realize that we will see more and more people realizing how extremely expensive it is to hold a car in Norway today, and that it is possible to live a great and complete life without a car, especially with increased options in Public Transport.

Grünerløkka was built before cars were common. The reason Grünerløkka is popular today is not the lack of parking possibilities for the inhabitants, but rather the mix of people, the service offerings, and the proximity to Oslo’s central areas. I don’t see this as conflicting with a parking norm of one space per apartment in an underground parking garage.
If your whole life is concentrated within the city core, a car would probably be unnecessary. But having the possibility to own and park a car, even if rarely used, is still preferable the way I see it.
Ingenioren April 20th, 2010, 07:45 PM Car-share can fullfill your needs when you only need a car on rear occasions. I would certainly not call the 0.6 norm a no-car policy, those who need a car for work or just love their car can still have one, they just have to pay marked price for their garagespace :)

IceCheese August 31st, 2010, 02:06 AM Jernbaneverket and ROM Eiendom has finally reached an agreement on Drammen station(-hall), and it seems a new station will be ready for Drammen's 200 year anniversary next year. According to Jernbaneverket, works will start right away.
Some info from Jernbaneverkets article (http://www.jernbaneverket.no/no/Nyheter/Nyhetsarkiv/2010/Enighet-om-Drammen-stasjon/):
- Det skal bli mye lysere og både avgangshall, kontor- og næringsarealer skal bygges om, forteller direktør Pål Berger i NSBs eiendomsselskap, ROM Eiendom.
Stasjonen vil få en bredt tjenestetilbud i tillegg til venterom og billettsalg. Det blir flere spisesteder og butikker og det blir tre innganger til bygningen.
Renders from ROM
Facade will remain almost unchanged

Olabil September 23rd, 2010, 03:24 PM So they are going to renovate Drammen station? I`d rather see them building a new station at Brakerøya and let the trains continuing to Vestfoldbanen go straight over to Fjell from there. Then they wouldn`t need to do a circle all the way around Drammen city. This section needs to be upgraded anyways, so why not build it for the future?!
kjetilab September 23rd, 2010, 03:32 PM Such a project would be far into the future. There have been loose talk about the bottleneck on Vestfoldbanen between Drammen station and Kobbervikdalen, but nothing concrete thus far. (But who knows what Jernbaneverket may have in their drawers). I think the most realistic solution will be a 5km long tunnel from around Nybyen to Kobbervikdalen.
Regardsless, the station renovation is very welcome.

The plot used to be a gas station back in the days and AFAIK is now a garage.
Located in Nedre Storgate 32 (although the real estate agent tries to posh up the name by renameing the street Nedre Slottsgate), is't just behind the soon- to-be finished Bragernes Strand and a 10-15 minute walk from Bragernes Torg. City of Rain December 14th, 2010, 07:25 PM http://dt.no/nyheter/mobiliserer-til-bybanekamp-1.5882805
Gratis i rushtiden
:D lets do like the rest of the continent, and build light rail systems in all our "major" cities!
kjetilab December 14th, 2010, 10:28 PM It would be totally awesome with a light rail system in Drammen and the satelite towns. It would make the bigger shopping malls in the suburbs more viable as well.
Ingenioren December 14th, 2010, 11:33 PM Yes please, also Fredrikstad - Sarpsborg should start thinking about light-rail eventually!
Mulefisk December 17th, 2010, 03:45 AM This is a great idea.
And I mean, for the "experts" saying that the proposed line won't have enough passengers. If Drammen is going to grow by 50,000 people in the next 20 years, and the city has a shiny new light rail line, where are those people going to choose to live? We only have to look at the many new projects along Bergens new bybane to see that light rail projects are like a magnet for new development.
Hovedfunksjonene i

Looks almost surprsingly urban! Maybe we can move towards a more populated future in a more urban way afterall!:) Good connections (rail based, maybe tram) to both Drammen and Oslo is essential. Not sure train is enough for the local market.
Ingenioren February 10th, 2011, 02:09 PM It's a shame that Brakerøya - Spikkestad railway was closed. They should open it up again....
IceCheese February 11th, 2011, 01:39 AM I know they talked about that a new rail tunne should be built at the same time as the motorway tunnel from Spikkestad to Lier (this was a couple of years ago..). I'm not sure anything got from it, though... Too bad, as the potential for further integration of the Drammen region is great.
I also read on Statens vegvesen's page that the new Rv23 won't be done until 2018 at earliest (!!!). What is it with these bureaucrats, that manage to drag things out so much? They must have a special ability. The regulation plan was approved in '03!!!
kjetilab February 22nd, 2011, 09:19 PM This sort of belongs just as much in the Oslo thread as in this one, but anyway...
Skaaret Holding want to develop the fields south of E18 just across the border from Asker into a new development zone of 160 mål (40 acres if I'm not mistaken) consisting of housing, offices, a big indoor football hall and a highrise hotel with 200-300 rooms.

kjetilab June 20th, 2011, 10:45 AM That's in fact our preferred way of renovation.. Some "accidentally" sets an old house on fire, and then we can rebuild it into something more economically efficient. You know, white concrete, some steel and glass balconies.

I've also thought about that a couple of times. It's probably the nicest plot in Drammen.
Kjetil, I remember you saying something about the ground being too unstable to build anything there?
Galro June 28th, 2011, 01:43 PM ^^Only shame about the highway bridge though.
IceCheese June 28th, 2011, 04:04 PM Why? I think it looks nice:) There's also a (couple of) railroad bridge(s) passing the island, but the good part is all major infrastructure is gathered at the very westmost tip.
And yes, the dt.no links seems to work now, but they didn't the day I posted. Saving the pictures for your own is still a greater guarantee for them working in the future, though. There's a reason when you go 2-3 years back, some users end up with only red-xes and others still have pictures showing.
mjoks007 June 28th, 2011, 04:54 PM I always think about how wonderful that plot is for development when I pass it. Would been awesome!
Galro June 28th, 2011, 04:59 PM Why? I think it looks nice:) There's also a (couple of) railroad bridge(s) passing the island, but the good part is all major infrastructure is gathered at the very westmost tip.
Because it limits how good any new developments there can connect with the rest of the city. The highway bridge is the difference between what can be an extension of Drammen centrum and what can be just another housing district imho.
IceCheese June 28th, 2011, 05:03 PM ^^I disagree. The biggest obstacle for connecting Drammen's different shores will always be the river, and it's not much narrower here than any other places. But Strømsøbrua and Holmenbrua have been upgraded with wide pesestrian routes, and I think that is the most important part in making "Holmen" an attractive cityborough. I don't get how E18 affects this at all, as a matter of fact.
Galro June 28th, 2011, 05:08 PM You don't see a freeway bridge as an obstacle? Really? Do you know of any urban places that have successfully integrated a freeway bridge? I agree with that the river is also a further obstacle, however the bridges are human made while the river is not.
IceCheese June 28th, 2011, 05:27 PM ^^No, I just don't get what you're suggesting as an alternative, and whether it will increase attractivity in the area to the level that it will be profitable for the society as a whole. You're suggesting digging down a four lane highway bridge + Drammensbanen, where the alternative is an under-sea tunnel that would require long ramps on both sides to be deep enough under Drammenselva.
Galro June 28th, 2011, 05:30 PM No, I'm only saying that it is a shame that the island have all these bridges and that these will limit the success of the new developments. I don't think the state should pay to have it removed though as it have a very limited benefit to the society as whole
:)
IceCheese June 28th, 2011, 05:33 PM ^^Yeah, but stating that is the wrong place to start when we're talking about a possible redevelopment of this area.
Mulefisk June 29th, 2011, 12:01 AM Here's a little plan I sketched out that shows how Holmen could be incorporated into Drammen sentrum.
http://i.imgur.com/0oQJz.jpg
A new cental station would be sure to bring some life, and Holmen lies right inbetween the two boom-areas Lierstranda and Strømsø, making it a natural place for development.
Putting the old railway underground will connect Strømsø to the river, and will make it easier for people to move between Drammen sentrum and Holmen. It also has the added bonus of creating a better pedestrian connection to Union Brygge.
Holmen could be Drammens fjordcity if the politicians play it right. All the industry would have to be moved though. Maybe to Sande? I heard that JBV were planning a new cargo port there.
Ingenioren June 30th, 2011, 02:15 PM http://i2.sinaimg.cn/dy/c/p/2007-11-21/U1565P1T1D14356894F21DT20071121114821.jpg

kjetilab September 13th, 2011, 01:09 PM It's not located on the station peremiter though, but next to our fantastic landmark Skistadbygget, adjacent to the ring road. A nice spot for a parking house. And compared to the other parking houses in town this is an architectural masterpiece
GlennHGSD September 20th, 2011, 03:24 PM It might be a little off topic, but Haugesund is now being compared to Drammen before it's revival:

It is a very sad trend, and it's simply a result of a politic that neglects urban planning and development. The trend with more car based shopping centres outside the historical city centres has been a major force over the last couple of decades all over the country. And it followed the suburban housing trend that came in the '60s. Now, if you have a car and you don't work in the city centre, there's no real reason to go there anymore on a daily basis. In fact no reason to go there particularly often at all if it doesn't offer anything else than what the shopping malls offer. And what you get is similar to American car based cities.
Of course, traditionally the city centre has always been the heart of the cities and it the most interesting, bustling and vibrant place. The problem is that once you move shopping out of this equation, the other functions it offers like historical sites, architecture, cafés and restaurants are not enough anymore. Because remember, moving the shopping out comes on top of the above mentioned suburbia developments which has already moved most of the inhabitants to be living in a very spread out structure. Housing and shops are basic elements. So what you get from there is a negative spiral, the smaller independent shops for instance, will not be able to make it, and there will be even fewer reasons to go there and so on.
But the real key here is that for the smaller cities (like Haugesund) the impacts of this development is much more harmful and visible. There is a critical mass that a city needs to have a force strong enough to work in the opposite way. One car based mega mall in a smaller city will draw a relatively larger part of the population out of the city centre. So, we're back to the politics. If there's a concious and urban development focus, smaller cities could very well have attractive and vibrant city centres, but if not - only the larger cities will still have a chance.
IceCheese September 22nd, 2011, 03:32 PM Hmmm... I'm uncertain if a certain Drammen-forumer has noticed that in a certain document about Buskerudbyen, the intercity-project of lower Buskerud, on a certain page 19, a certain picture of a certain forumer can be found..
http://www.buskerudbyen.no/getfile.php/1615450.466.rarauatbvd/2011+13.mai+Revidert+planprogram+til+2.+gangs+behandling.pdf
The plan and a deal for closer cooperation between Kongsberg, Hokksund, Drammen++ was signed earlier this summer, and may prove effective in directing development to a more urban standard.
kjetilab September 22nd, 2011, 06:16 PM As far as I know, that certain forumer from Drammen (whomever that might be) had no idea. But I guess he would find that somewhat amusing.
