Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve

The mighty Danube River flows 1,788 miles from its springs in Germany’s Black Forest to the Black Sea. Just before reaching the sea it forms the second largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas: 2,200 square miles of rivers, canals, marshes, tree-fringed lakes and reed islands. The Danube Delta is a wildlife enthusiast’s (especially a bird watcher’s) paradise

Travelers can spend three or more days exploring its passages, teaming with the highest concentration of bird colonies in all of Europe. The maze of canals bordered by thatch, willows and oaks entangled in lianas, offers the perfect breeding ground for countless species of birds, some of them from as far away as China and Africa. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come here to escape the harsh winters of Northern Europe.

The Danube River is the most international river on the planet - its course runs across — or forms a part of the borders of several countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and four capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.
Formed over a period of more than 10,000 years, the Danube Delta continues to grow due to the 67 million tons of alluvia deposited every year by the Danube River.
The Delta is formed around the three main channels of the Danube, named after their respective ports: Chilia (in the north), Sulina (in the middle), and Sfantu Gheorghe (in the south).
The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve has the third largest biodiversity in the world (over 5,500 flora and fauna species), exceeded only by the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Galapagos Archipelago in Ecuador.
The Danube Delta is home to over 60% of the world’s population of pygmy cormorants (phalacrocorax pygmeus), 50% of red-breasted geese (branta ruficollis) and the largest number of white pelicans (pelecanus onocrotalus) and Dalmatian pelicans (pelecanus crispus) in Europe.
It also is home to the world’s largest reed bed expanse – 625, 000 acres / 240,000 ha.
Some 15,000 people inhabit the Delta area, living in 28 villages and one city (Sulina).
The area was first attested by Herodot of Halicarnas (484 – 425 B.C.).
More then half of the Delta Biosphere Reserve is virtually intact.

How much of time I go from Bucharest to Tulcea?

The motorway is very fast and the traffic is kind of low for a highway. From Slobozia - bridge over Danube -Harsova ( E60 ) the road is ok but it's kind of crowded sometimes and after Harsova you'll take the road to Tulcea DN22A(which I like very much) that is very well maintained (perfect asphalt) and the traffic is very very low ( you will meet 1 car at 2 minutes :) )
So it depends: 2- 2 hours and a half maybe.
If u take the train it will take 3-3 hours and a half to get there from Bucharest

The Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. The greater part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania (Tulcea county), while its northern part, on the left bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in the Ukraine (Odessa Oblast).

The approximate surface is 4152 km², of which 3446 km² are in Romania. If the lagoons of Razim-Sinoe (1015 km² of which 865 km² water surface; situated in the south, but attached to the Danube Delta from geological and ecological perspectives, as well as being the combined territory of the World Heritage Site) are to be added, the considered area of the Danube Delta grows to 5165 km².

Here, these lagoons appear greenish yellow, as do the branches of the river and the sediments spilling from them into the Black Sea. Inland, much of the terrain is used for agriculture, and many rectangular fields can be seen

De astazi incepand, am activat primele 1000 de panorame navigabile din Delta Dunarii. Panoramele au fost realizate cu sprijinul Institutului National de Cercetare - Dezvoltare pentru Geologie si Geoecologie Marina - GeoEcoMar.

Cu ajutorul acestor panorame, poti sa iti iei o pauza de cateva minute, sa intri in serviciul NORC Street-view, sa te asezi la intrarea in Delta si sa privesti peisajul full-screen.

Brațul Chilia





Brațul Chilia este lung de 111 km și transportă 60% din apa Dunării. Înainte de regularizarea Brațului Sulina, transporta 77%.

Este lat de 300-700 m și pe 85 de km delimitează granița cu Ucraina.

În fiecare primăvară, apele cresc în Deltă în medie cu 1,5 m. În această primăvară, creșterea a fost de 2 m.

În 1813 locuiau aici 1528 români, 982 ucrainieni, 693 ruși (sursă)


In 1813, according to Russian census, in Ismail were living 1528 Romanians, 982 Ukrainians, 693 Russians etc (sursă (http://www.bessarabia.ru/demografic.htm)). După rusificarea din secolele XIX_XX, în prezent sunt 42% ruși, 38% ucrainieni, 10% bulgari, 4% români.

Brațul Chilia






Chilia Veche, populație 3,000, este într-adevăr veche. Numele vine de la cetatea antică Achileia, legată de cultul lui Ahile, la fel ca și Insula Șerpilor unde era centrul acestui cult, cu un templu și oracol.




În 1479, pe malul opus, moldovenesc, Ștefan cel Mare a construit celebra cetatea Chilia, care în prezent este un oraș de 20,829 locuitori, dintre care 16% români. În 1806, 92% erau români.



Chilia Veche este cea mai mare localitate de pe braț și a doua după Sulina în Delta românească. Oamenii care se văd în fotografie nu așteaptă să se îmbarce ci să trimită sau să primească pachete.
