Sabah State Railway (SSR) is a railway system and operator in the state of Sabah in Malaysia. It is the currently the only rail transport system operating on the island of Borneo. The railway consists of a single 134km line from Tanjung Aru, near Kota Kinabalu, to the town of Tenom, in the Interior Division. It was formerly known as North Borneo Railway.

Railway line upgrading work faces delay

KOTA KINABALU: Borneo’s only railway line is still struggling to get back into business as an upgrading and modernisation project is facing delays.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan said the technical problems including geographical features were causing delays in the completion of the 134 km line upgrading works that was supposed to have been completed by August 2008.

“Even though there are delays due to technical problems, works are still going on smoothly,” Pairin said after making a working visit to the railway project.

He said they were facing technical difficulties particularly in shifting the railway lines along the Beaufort Pangi stretch.

This was due to lack of land space to make adjustments around hilly area.

“Another delay in laying the new lines is in the Petagas area where a school access road sits on the railway line reserve,” Pairin said, adding that steps were being taken to address the problems.

The upgrading project involved changing 60lb railway tracks to the 80lb tracks similar to the one used currently by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).

The upgrading works that started in Nov 2005 also included building 10 new stations and upgrading three other stations along the railway track from Kota Kinabalu to interior Tenom.

He said the stations that had been completed was the stretch from Tenom - Panie - Rayoh - Halogilat - Saliwangan - Beaufort - Membakut - Bongawan -Kimanis - Papar while works for the Kawang Kinarut - Tanjung Aru stretch was still underway.

He said under the modernisation plan, Sabah Railway Department would purchase two locomotive Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) for passenger services and two locomotives for cargo, apart from obtaining three KTMB rail coaches that were being refurbished.

``With the new, units we will be able increase our capacity to 210 passengers with the new DMU compared to the current capacity of about 100 passengers in one trip.

“I am sure the number of people using the services will increase once upgrading works are completed,” he added.

The rail services between Tanjung Aru and Papar has been suspended since the upgrading works started andrail service is available only between Papar and Tenom.

KUCHING: A railway system for Sarawak now looks set to be realised within the next 15 to 20 years.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is also Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication, yesterday held a discussion with Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri on the possibility of building the railway system.

Speaking to reporters later, Jabu said the federal government, represented by Rahim, had responded positively to the idea.

He also said the railway system is now at planning stage, and could be included in the proposal of projects from Sarawak in the 10th Malaysia Plan or 11th Malaysia Plan.

“The first priority for the railway system, as mentioned by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, will be in the areas under SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy).

“The locations have yet to be identified, but because of the intensification of activities within SCORE area, priority will be on the transportation of goods and bulk cargo from the industries to the other areas,” he said.

Jabu said the railway system may also link the ports of Bintulu, Similajau and Tanjung Manis, all of which will be the entry and exit points for materials and products either going in or out of industries in SCORE.

He also did not dismiss the possibility of the railway system to be the next public transportation for Sarawak, although he was quick to stress that the main priority would still be on transportation of goods and cargo.

Rahim, a Sabahan, welcomed the plan by Sarawak to have its own railway system.

He said he hoped to see the two East Malaysian states to be eventually linked by railway in the near future in line with the 1Malaysia concept.

He said the linking act would be a logical move because Sabah already has its own railway system that now runs for about 200km.

“In respect of railway transport, I think this is the area which Sabah and Sarawak can look at. Because in many developed countries, railway transport system is always the backbone of the main transportation system, whether it is in Europe, China, India, America or Australia.

“For the future of land transportation system in the land of Borneo, I think it is good to have initial planning. As you know, our Trans-Borneo road is more or less completed, but the railway system can facilitate the movement of goods between the states, and eventually will be linked to the southern part of Borneo.

“It is good to have this sort of beginning. Maybe in the next 15 to 20 years there will be a lot of development towards this effect,” he said.

Foreseeing a railway system connecting Sabah and Sarawak within the next 100 years, he said rail services were proven to be a cheaper mode of transport, more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Relating the Sabah experience, he said the Sabah State Railway, a state-owned agency, recently received RM400 million from the federal government to upgrade its services.

The railway in Sabah runs through Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort and Tenom.

To another question, he said it would be up to Sarawak to decide if its railway system would be funded by the federal or the state governments.

He added that it would also take a lot of political will to get the idea realised within the soonest time possible.

The railway is now operated by Sabah State Railway Department, which is an arm of the Sabah state administration.

Current rehabilitation work on the railway is however being handled jointly by SSR along with Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the corporatised (but wholly federal government owned) railway operator for the railway network in Peninsular Malaysia. Despite this, SSR is still operationally and administratively completely separate from KTM, and uses different operational equipment.

A RAILWAY SYSTEM LINKING ALL DISTRICTS OF SABAH

KOTA KINABALU: The State Infrastructure Development Ministry yesterday disclosed an exciting plan to build a central railway station for Sabah at the existing 50-acre site of the Tanjung Aru Railway Station.

The detailed Development Plan of the “Aeropod Project” based on the name of the railway station will be officially unveiled in conjunction with the launch of the Sabah Development Corridor by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Abdullah Badawi on January 29.

The private-funded project is estimated to cost around RM600 million and will include shopping arcades, hotels and art galleries similar to the development concept of the KL Central railway station.

“The whole idea of the Aeropod project is to create a transport hub for Sabah where when one only needs to get to the Aeropod and be connected to almost every part of Sabah on various modes of transportation,” said Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah.

He was speaking when receiving a courtesy call from the China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry (Group) Corporation (China South Locomotive) at his office in Sembulan here.

The project as part of the State government’s ambitious plan to establish a complete railway system connecting the entire state as an alternative mode of transportation and a crucial transport system to propel greater economic development for Sabah.

The project has been awarded to SP Setia Bhd, a public-listed company.

“It is a very good concept and the investor’s willingness to invest such a huge amount of money in Sabah reflects their confidence in the State government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman as the Chief Minister of Sabah,” Tan pointed out.

The project is expected to start work as soon as it is officially launched and is expected to take between 3 to 5 years to complete.

Tan said once completed, the project will transform the existing Tanjung Aru railway station into a modern and dynamic transport hub besides generating socio-economic development to Tanjung Aru and the entire Kota Kinabalu city.

On the expansion program for the Sabah railway system, Tan said the railway is another important mode of transportation besides road, air and sea and it should not be neglected in the development of the state.

He was convinced that if properly planned and executed, it will be a key feature in ensuring the future success of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) program.

Recognising this, the Ministry has recently through its consultant firm Glitteria Sdn Bhd invited the China South Locomotive to Sabah to look into the possibility of assisting in the expansion program.

A feasibility study on the expansion program is currently being carried out. It will connect Tanjung Aru to Keningau, Tawau and Lahad Datu, as well as to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) probably using the railcar so as to better ease traffic congestion in the city.

There is also a plan to build a new railway linkage from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and a feasibility study on it will be carried out in the near future.

Tan is convinced the China South Locomotive can play an important part in the expansion program, citing its expertise and experience in the locomotive and rolling stock manufacturing industry.

The company’s Area Manager and Overseas Business Department Head, Wang Gang earlier noted that its credentials include a part in the world’s highest railway project, the Qingzang Railway.

Also present at the occasion were State Railway Department general manager, James Wong, China South Locomotive’s project manager, Chen Peifeng, its design department engineer, Yang Qi and Loh Boon Sue, director of Glitteria Sdn Bhd and Tan’s press secretary, Lee Tink Loi.

Wow, the Aeropod train station plan sounds cool..and the expansion would be really good,is there any updates on the expansion? It would be really good to see most districts in sabah connected with railways..that would be a massive boost to the economy involving the rural areas.

I am not too keen with the colour though...its too contrasting...but, on the bright side its good that a new set of trains finally coming...top speed of 120 km/h ...not bad...design kinda look dated but then lets see how the train fares when it enters service

Quoted from the news article posted by nazrey, second post for this thread.

Sabah State Railway will only receive 2 sets of the DMU as stated in the article.
For a start, maybe.. these 2 sets of DMU can play the route Tg Aru(KK)-Papar/Papar-Tg Aru(KK) as commuter train.
I hope... gradually more unit will be acquire.

Any news on the Aeropod.?

CM Datuk Seri Musa said the locomotive head and cabins that arrived from China about two days ago would commence operations once the State Railways is satisfied that everything is in place.

The department would need about four weeks to assemble and test the new locomotives, which are part of the plan to upgrade railway services in the State.

On train services from Beaufort to Tenom that was suspended when a section of the track fell into the river in April 2008, he said the problem is still being resolved.

Authorities are deciding whether to rebuild the tracks near the spot or to re-route it.

Two people were killed when the train fell into the fast flowing Padas River after the tracks were washed away by severe soil erosion on the riverbanks.

How long are the trains? 6 carriages?

Each DMU is composed of one motor car with driver’s cab, a trail car with driver’s cab at one end and another two trail cars in the middle

3+1= 3 carriages + 1 motor car = 4

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Railways Department and contractors of the over RM300 million railway upgrading project from Tanjung Aru to Tenom have been urged to expedite its completion.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, who made the call, said the long overdue project needs to be completed immediately due to many complaints from the public who depend on the railway for transport.

He said the 134km project consists of two sectors, the first involving tracks from Tanjung Aru to Kimanis by Suria Capital Holding Berhad and that the progress of physical work now stood at 93 per cent.

The second sector involved upgrading work on the tracks from Kimanis to Tenom by Hikmat Asia Sdn Bhd and that the physical progress stood at 88 per cent.

"Basically, we want this project to be completed as soon as possible although there are several technical problems because it has been delayed since Nov 2005.

"In other words, the project has been delayed for about four years and there are many issues involved in the implementation of the project.

"Extension of time (EOT) had been given on Oct 2009 and now the EOT has already lapsed. Another EOT is yet to be given and it is already late," he said.

Abdul Rahim told a press conference after he was briefing by the project manager and consultants of the project at the operation room of the State Railways Department here, Friday.

Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary to the Infrastructure Development Ministry Ahmad Hashim and State Railways Department General Manager Mohd Arshad Abdul Razak.

Abdul Rahim said the Ministry expects the upgrading work from Tanjung Aru to Beaufort to be at least completed within this year to facilitate the need for alternative public transportation.

He said rural villagers in Pangi, Rayoh and Tenom are the most affected as their villages have no access road.

KOTA KINABALU, June 11 (Bernama) -- Sector One of the railway rehabilitation project between Tanjung Aru and Kimanis is almost completed and is expected to be handed over to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) next month.

In announcing this, Suria Capital Holdings Bhd (Suria Capital) group managing director Datuk Dr Mohd Fowzi Razi said the railway rehabilitation project comprises two sectors -- Sector 1 from Tanjung Aru to Kimanis (from Km3.9 to Km55.6) and Sector 2 -- from Kimanis to Tenom (from Km55.6 to Km139.7).

"Sector 1 was undertaken by Suria Capital and was placed under the supervision of its wholly-owned subsidiary, SCHB Engineering Services Sdn Bhd, while Sector 2 was awarded to Hikmat Asia Sdn BHd," he said in a statement.

Todate, work on Sector 1 has been 97.5 per cent completed, with work currently focused on level crossings infrastructure work, bridges foundation protection and hillslope improvement that are awaiting issuance of Certificate of Practical Completion (CPC).

Fowzi said the delay at Sector 1 was mainly due to a number of unforeseen additional work to suit site constraints which inevitably led to timeframe extension.

Looking at the photos here, I still can't have a descent close up view of the interior of the new train sets. The only thing I can see are the seats, even that is somehow obscured by the window panel reflections.

My best guess, the train will function similar to KTM Komuter...for KK - Papar - KK route...

I hope I can try out this new service at the end of this year.

There is an explanation for this.

The Sapsan train (Siemens Velaro RUS), as you can see runs on an upgraded existing track which allows operation up to 250 km/h.

The key point is that they upgraded existing track, which is of 1,520 mm gauge, also known as broad gauge. It is possible to run Velaro because their track gauge is broader than even the standard gauge (1,435 mm) which is mostly used in other countries (Shinkansen or other high speed rail network such as TGV, ICE, AVE, THSR etc).

In our case, since our previous track is metre gauge (1,000 mm), and we do the upgrading project (double tracking + electrification, retaining the same gauge), trains can constantly travel up to 160 km/h, faster than speeds of below 100 km/h for most period of the journey.

If Malaysia had standard gauge (1,435 mm) built before say....electrified double tracking project (Padang Besar - Johor Bahru) which is considered as upgrade of course, then for sure, our railway line speed will be at least 200 km/h, as in the UK (limited by signalling).

Yes, they were built for the movement of natural resources, mainly tin (Perak).

Even the Sabah state railway was built in 19th century for the purpose of freight movement.

WCML alignment in UK is tighter and has more sharp curves than upgraded sections such as Ipoh-Seremban in Malaysia. However, 200 km/h operation is made possible in WCML because of tilting Pendolino train and earlier on, the WCML was built as standard gauge from the beginning.

Back to the Sabah state railway, i can see the potential for future, considering the population around Kota Kinabalu and also west coast is increasing. I hope one day, the track can be extended for future potential.

Railways built by our former british masters were built mainly to pillage our natural resources...so it is not oriented towards people movement!!

But no worrries, the British is going bankrupt :lol:..payback time and we'll see more of them become beggars with deep painful cuts into their welfare system which is as big as our annual budget!!!

Not yet. According to JKNS (Jabatan Keretapi Negeri Sabah) at their facebook page, they will start operating this year (2011). I am so interested to look at the interior of the new train (mind you that it is a new train, not a second hand product although KTMB will give some of used trains from theirs later).

You should have look their videos while testing the train from Tanjung Aru (KK) to Beaufort in Facebook. Very interesting.

The government do have plan to expand the railway service state wide. Within the West Coast, I had seen in person the proposed railway lines (including LRT) within KK, but it is still at planning stage, could have change now. One of the plan also to extend the railway up to the Sepanggar Port. SP Setia is also tasked to redevelop the Tanjung Aru terminal, but until now I have yet to see any construction going on now. So, to be frank, things are running quite slow, very slow.

I have no idea about ridership. In the past, people even took trains from Putatan to KK for work...but, in the interior, the ridership is quite popular. However, price wise, I don't think it is a money making business (it is run by a state government department and not a GLC) when you have to consider the socio economic condition of passengers using it everyday.

The Brits are no longer responsible for maintenance of our rail tracks. So why should they?
And our government only took action after a series of derailments - one of which lead to death... if I remember well.

Although we have to applaud that improvements are finally being made, one still has to wonder what on earth took them so long to do so.

Serious? Or are you get caught in an increasingly heavier traffic perhaps with cars all around you, which means you have to be wary of vehicles in front of you in close range while attempting to speed? Sorry, I am a bit skeptical here...:)

Labuan: The train ride from Beaufort to Pangi (near Tenom) - a distance of 129km - is the last leg of the train journey which originates daily from Kota Kinabalu.
Brochures describe the Beaufort-Pangi ride as the "Last Train of Borneo".

The slogan holds out promise of wholesome old-fashioned adventure offering breathtaking views of the Padas river rapids as water gushes through the Padas gorge.

The views definitely give hints of the thrills and spills in store for the white water rafter from Pangi back to the Rayoh station, a distance of 8km.

Rayoh is between Pangi and Beaufort.

Twenty members of the Persatuan Pengembara Labuan (Labuan Backpackers' Association planned to experience the rafting adventure on Christmas Day. But when they arrived in Beaufort from Labuan on Dec 24, they suffered their first disappointment.

The train would not have a morning service because the engine was "rosak" (broken down).

Pangi is the starting point for Padas river rafting.

The backpackers, however, managed to board the afternoon journey at 1.30pm.

The journey truncated at the Halogilat station which was a half-way point to Pangi.

Here a second disappointment was in store as the train would not proceed to Pangi because the tracks were being repaired.

Requests that the train take the backpackers a further 8km to Rayoh station which would be nearer to Pangi was also not entertained.

The backpackers, thus, had to make a gruelling 8-km walk, dragging their luggage on the rail track to reach Rayoh, where friendly villagers told them that the train was notorious for its breakdowns and irregular service.

To overcome their travelling problem to Tenom, the villagers fashioned home-made trolleys and used them to paddle to Tenom about 10km to sell their produce as well as purchase household items. It was inconvenient and tiring but they had no choice.

The backpackers waited until the next day, hoping the train service would be back to normal but it turned out to be even worse. There was no service because the engine was rosak again," said Yunos, who led the Backpackers on the expedition.

A tour operator's staff walked all the way from Beaufort to inform them of the situation!

Left without choice, the backpackers had to continue another 10km on foot.

"Luckily the villagers sympathised with us which had 10 women and rented us three of their trolleys at RM100. This encouraged us to continue," said Yunos. He said most of the villagers expressed disappointment that though ample funds had been allocated for infrastructure development, it was not evident in the interior of Sabah.

"Our rafting experience turned into a walking expedition instead, no thanks to Sabah Railways," said Yunos.

Most of them felt "The Last Train of Borneo experience" deserved an award for being Sabah's most disappointing tourism product.

JKNS posted the trial run in facebook recently, its the interior photos with passengers! I think these are the passengers that you tlaked about, and I found it strange that some of them were consist of Europeans. You all should visit their fb page to see the train interior, quite a highlight.

The interior is much improved from previous train.

Got a question about the status of the railway from a person who is planning an upcoming trip to Sabah in November 2011

He and his father (a former railway engineer & Manager of the North Borneo Railway) are hoping to ride the railway.

I think there should be no problem from KK to Beaufort - hopefully service past Beaufort will have improved by November 2011.

Any information you have is very welcome. I also directed him to this forum, so we might be able to get some information from his father about his experience on the railway.

KUCHING: Soon, visitors to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah will be able to experience the good old era of the steam locomotive when the North Borneo Railway commences operation once again in July 2011.

The North Borneo Railway features a British ‘Vulcan’ Steam Engine number 6-016 manufactured by the Vulcan Foundry Ltd in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire, United Kingdom and is the last of a fleet of locomotives that piled the tracks through Borneo.

Not only do these steam engines represent the last of a fleet that have plied the tracks through Borneo since the late 1880s, they are also part of the only few functional wood burners left in the world.

The train has a capacity for 180 passengers accommodated in six colonial-period carriages that have been refurbished and restored to reflect the luxury of the era.

A kitchen car serves ‘Tiffin’ styled meals, highlighting an exotic blend of colonial and continental cuisine. The railway is operated to the highest of international standards and is fully compliant with modern safety standards.

Passengers on board the train will be able to take in the sights and sounds of the countryside, paddy fields, mangrove jungles and pristine coastal beaches as the train chucks along the tracks from Tanjung Aru station into Putatan, heading for Kinarut, Kawang and Papar, the ‘Rice Bowl of Sabah’.

http://i.imgur.com/lchJO.jpgIf (from what I see above) the Aeropod is going to be located at the existing Tg. Aru train station site, will they build a new station across from the Kota Kinabalu Airport Terminal?

I'd love to see a tramlink from the Airport to Kota Kinabalu town - stop at Tg. Aru for the tourists & railway users as well.

Took the new train several days ago. I never expect to hear recorded announcement. The announcement is like this, "Stesen seterusnya, Putatan (next station, Putatan)". :D

The interior is very quiet too. Schedule wise, the service is not frequent since the train runs on a single track line.

I wonder if there are times when the train flies past traffic congestion. One of the best reasons to take the train.

Yup, almost everyday. But, the current schedules/frequency may still not attractive enough. I am so hoping that the Aeropod project will be launched pretty soon, because more railway expansion in the near future may follow suit, I hope.

I hope they rebuild the line from Tenom to Melalap. Then build a new line all the way to Keningau. In fact, I hope they extend the KNS alignment from Tenom all the way to Tawau on the east coast.

The popular steam train service with a whistle, a joint venture between the Sabah Railway Department and the Sutera Harbour Resort, came back on track on July 1.

Revived in 2000 after it was decommissioned in the 1970s, the service ceased about five years ago when the Railway Department closed the railway tracks for an upgrading project which was finally completed last year.

The 50km journey from Tanjung Aru, here, to Papar and back, takes about four hours and is scheduled every Wednesday and Saturday.

As for the majestic 1954 engine which was manufactured by the Vulcan Foundry Ltd at Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire, United Kingdom, it is the last of a fleet of locomotives which plied Sabah from the late 1880s. It is also among a handful left in the world.

The existing Vulcan 6-016 engine is maintained with spare parts salvaged from another similar engine owned by the department plus other parts bought from elsewhere.

The classic ride takes passengers past five stations -- Tanjung Aru, Putatan, Kinarut, Kawang and Papar -- as well as a 450m-long tunnel, with panoramic scenery and endless waves from children who wait in anticipation of the train on its journey at villages or in schools.

Waiter Jual Hussin, 42, who wears an eye-catching all-white ensemble of knee-length shorts and shirt paired with long socks and a hat, spoke passionately of serving over 10 years aboard the five 16-seater carriages.

"This is one of the few steam powered locomotives left in the world and for anyone, who gets a seat on board, it is a rare privilege.

"I am from Tanjung Aru and I grew up within sight and sound of this train. I take working on board the Vulcan with pride because it is like preserving a legacy of our past. The big plus is we get to share it," said Jual.

A spokesman for Sutera Harbour Resort said the railway service was one of its most popular products before it was stopped for upgrading works in 2007.

"Since we restarted the service, the response has been overwhelming and we even have charters or block bookings for the schedule runs," she said, adding that the Vulcan still had a lot of good years of service ahead of it.

Now ... when will the Sabah Government restore the rails between Tg. Aru & Kota Kinabalu and offer a combined Airport Railway and Commuter railway service?

BTW, the other day, While stuck in traffic jam at Petagas area, the train just zipped pass at ease. :D, I was thinking, maybe I should try taking the train next time and wave my hand towards those stuck in traffic jams! :D

At some stretch of one's imagination, maybe can still force it as far as Karamunsing area. Then the Karamunsing flyover will be in the way, beyond that very expensive real estate :)
But then, if they learn some useful land acquisition tricks from KL's MRT experience ...... :lol:

Furthermore, there isn't really anything left to 'restore' beyond that mini-station (sorry, no idea what the proper name is) opposite the state mosque - all the tracks and sleepers beyond that have been removed as far as I know !

Police: All accounted for in Sabah rail track inferno

KOTA KINABALU: Police have confirmed that all passengers had been accounted for in Monday's collision between a train with 200 people and a fuel tanker at Kepayan here.

"We can confirm that there is no death," state police commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said on Tuesday.

It was reported that 34 of the 200 passengers could not be traced after the explosion.

Sabah Railway officials said they were able to locate 173 of the 200 passengers while others are believed to have returned home without informing the authorities.

At noon Tuesday, cranes were still trying to remove the wreckage to enable rail services between Kota Kinabalu city and interior Tenom to resume.

Site investigations are expected to be wrapped up anytime now.

In the 5.30pm collision, 12 were injured and 34 of the 200 passengers could not be traced.

Most of the passengers had scrambled out of the driver's compartment to flee the inferno while the injured were rushed to hospital. Two of the injured still remained in hospital.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman has asked for a full investigation into the collision.

"I am thankful there are no fatalities, nonetheless, I want the relevant authorities, including the Railway Department and Shell Timur, to carry out a thorough investigation on the accident," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a statement Shell Timur Sdn Bhd said the company has stopped operations at their Kepayan petrol station as an immediate safety precaution.

The company said they were cooperating with police and other authorities looking into the cause of the accident.

"Shell remains in constant contact with the authorities on the ground and is ready to render any assistance if required,'' the statement said.

The tanker, laden with 27,000 litres (around RM60k) of petrol, was being driven across an "unmanned" and illegal railway crossing when it collided with the train.

I read the news rearding DAP rep. suggestion for the railway line to terminate at Kinarut instead of Tanjung Aru. This is his response towards the recent incident. I personally disagree with his suggestion. I think the railway should remain terminate at Kota Kinabalu (Tanjung Aru, and not to forget a small and end of the line Sekretariat station). The reasons are:

1. Even if the train terminates at Kinarut, a feeder bus, or another form of train would not be practical due to hassles of changing trains or buses to reach final destination. Using cars would cause further road congestion.

2. Kinarut is just a very small town, building large railway station might not justify that.

3. As reported in the media regarding the incident, some of the passengers are office workers who commute frequently between their hometowns and KK. Terminus at Kinarut might cost them more in terms of fare and it would be time consuming too. Tanjung Aru and Sekretariat stations are near enough to the CBD.

Yes, I agree. However, we are talking about an organisation responsible for operating the rail service which has the status of 'Jabatan'. Which translates to service purely for social responsibility disregarding financial performance (profit/loss).

I am firmly not against that, but in the long run, JKNS should not depend on government budget to operate and maintain the current level of service. They need to improve on services as population increases and I think many of them will be interested in taking trains.

I think JKNS should be abolished and be replaced by a GLC or Consortium or some sort of public-private entity to run the rail service profitably. That will ensure the service can be maintained and upgraded.

Just make all illegal crossing to be as a legal automated level crossing...cost less, maintenance less....:cheers:

But as they say, in Malaysia you have to offer some kind of blood sacrifices before people will jump up and take action. "Nak bising2 buat apa bukan ada orang mati" as the saying goes.

KTM just supervised the rehab with the limited budget given for a touristy line if not mistaken :nuts:. I dont think KTMB themselves would want something as risky as this for their own network.

But still, lucky that nobody died.

What do you mean by touristy line? The budget given by federal govt. was for the entire section of the line. The suggestion for the elevated line was for the stretch between Tanjung Aru station and Lok Kawi area. My opinion is the landuses along that stretch generate considerable amount of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
