Early life

Kumara Vidugalage Dona Geetha Samanmali Kumarasinghe[1] was born as the eldest daughter of Wijaya, a journalist and Udula Kumarasinghe in 1955 at Badulla. She grew up in Bentara, Elpitiya and had her education at Sangamitta Girl’s School, Hamburagala and Holy Family Convent, Kalutara.

As a child, she showed an inborn talent for singing and dancing. She was a mere 16 year old, when she was crowned a ‘Beauty Queen’ competing among 100 contestants in a beauty contest organized by a local Newspaper named ‘Dawasa’ in 1973.

Career

Though Geetha’s father did not approve of a career in movies or her participation in the beauty pageant, her mother was always with her. Her aunt, Anula Wickramapala was also a friend of Sir. Lester James Peiris . Incidentally, it was her aunts mansion that he used as the location for his film Ransalu. Little Geetha, who use to spend her school vacations in her aunt’s house in Kollupitiya would imitate Punya Heendeniya, as her childhood heroine.

It was in the year 1975 that Geetha debuted in K.A.W. Perera’s Vasana but it was Neil Rupasinghe’s Lassana Kella which reached theaters first. That was the beginning of her career as an actress which would span over three decades and she soon became an indispensable component of the commercial cinema of the country.

Kumarasinghe, who is often famous for casting in controversial roles, has also performed in foreign films which include Pakistani, Hindi, Japanese and French productions.

She received critical acclaim in roles such as ‘Dulcie’ in Pembara Madhu, ‘Dotty’ in Palama Yata, ‘Punna’ in Lokuduwa and ‘Amali’ in Ran Diya Dahara.

As a producer, she produced popular films like Palama Yata, Salambak Handai, Loku Duwa, Anuragaye Ananthaya, Wasuli and Geetha. Both of her productions, Palama Yata and Loku Duwa won her the Best Film Awards at the Sarasaviya Awards Festival.

^^ well I thought you got the message but you didnt. Please do not create a separate thread for each artist profile etc.

I am going to let this thread stand as we do not have a thrad for film industry. But I suggest you keep all film related posts in this thread then.

If you create new thread for every actor/model etc then it can be considered spamming and I will have to delete the thread. This forum is for architecture and development news and discussions anyway. Other topics are welcome but please do try not to spam the forum. Thanks.

What started off as a dream match turns into a nightmare for Julia, a damsel in distress waiting for a knight in shining armour. After discovering her husband’s true identity, her world crumbles. She who had once known love and happiness now dwells on fear and suspicion, until another human being enters her life and brightens her lonely existence. ‘Julia’ is a quadrangle revolving around four individuals: Julia, Dilru, Dev and Shakie whose lives are interlinked and intertwined.

This tale of Julia’s tragic plight is captured effectively on lens by Young debutants Charith Abeysinghe and Sampath Sri Roshan in their debut cinematic venture, ‘Julia’, which will make its premiere at the Odeon, Empire Leicester square, England, on December 14 at 10.30 a.m. This will be the first time that a Sri Lankan production will make its debut at an international theatre.

The film was shot in locations in Sri Lanka and England. Charming young actress Nadeesha Hemamali takes on the title role of the film while producer Charith and director Sampath along with Sasanthi Jayasekara, Harsha Bulathsinhala and Achala Walpola were involved. The movie also features veterans like Ravindra Randeniya, Robin Fernando, Veena Jayakody, Sriyantha Mendis, Rex Kodippily, Sandun Wijesiri, Stanley Dikkumbura, Teddy Vidyalankara, Bandula Sooriya Bandara and others.

Veteran cameraman Donald Karunaratne was the cinematographer of the movie while Ranjit Mathangaweera handled the make-up department. Sujeewa Gunaratne is the art director and Ranjith Prasanna the Assistant Director. Jaganth Nissanka is the Production Executive; Nalam Atigala is the line producer and Sugath Sisira is the media coordinator of the film.

Ranga Dassanaike, the son of the late veteran musician Sarath Dassanaike, has made his debut into film music direction in ‘Julia’. Dr. Ajantha Ranasinghe, Kelum Srimal, Ananda Padmasiri and Namal Attygalle have penned the lyrics while Kasun Kalhara, Uresha Ravihari, Gratiaen Ananda, Bachchi Susan, Charith Abeysinghe, Bhathiya Jayakody, Ashanti Sandria and others have lent their voices to the songs.

The melodies were composed by Ranga Dassanaike, Bhathiya Jayakody, Kasun Kalhara, Gratiaen Ananda and Nuwan Thenuwara.

Plans are in place to resurrect the 15 cinemas in the North and East, many of which have been ravaged by the war. National Film Corporation Chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa said, “We are in the process of renewing the registration of many of these cinemas; some have been closed down while others have disappeared completely.” The restoration of these cinemas will be handled by Rithma Enterprises, which is the distribution arm of the NFC.
The residents of Jaffna will soon have access to a brand new 200-seat mini theatre in the heart of the city as part of the Jaffna Art Centre project. Initiated by the National Film Corporation, the theatre will also contain an open air arena for stage plays and musical shows with artistes from Colombo on board, to provide training in arts and skills to the enthusiastic youth of the North.
Speaking to The Bottom Line, Dharmadasa said the mini theatre will be constructed with the support and backing of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, but construction cannot commence until the required land is obtained. “We are finalising the proceedings that will give us the land we need in an ideal location within the Jaffna Town,” he explained.
Dharmadasa added that while it is difficult these days to attract people into cinemas, as television tends to show many of the latest movies, there is tremendous enthusiasm within the industry to rejuvenate movie the cinema industry.
“We’ve had several meetings with all stakeholders and everyone is willing to work together to bring things to a better position. Our local artistes have agreed to attend premiers in cinemas across the county, while Malini Fonseka herself suggested that we conduct a lottery among ticket holders to promote the movies,” he informed.

I saw billboards of this movie (Alimankada - Elephant Pass) near the Rupavahini Station(Bauddaloka Mw).. The pics look pretty cool.. I hope the movie is as good. Itz time that a really good movie was releasd in honour of everyone who laid down their lives for our country. Like the mini series "band of brothers" is to world war 2, the local movie industry should do a good movie for SL as well.

From what i see there are 2 types of movie makers in sri lanka. The 'artsy' 'hip' type and the mainstream mass market type.

A movie commending our army guys doesn't fit the whole 'unbiased' 'hip' colombo elite culture of the first type and they'd rather take a so called middle ground which is just saying they don't have the balls to do something like what you said.

The second type just recycles the same old hindi movie formula over and over again using newly found 'superstars' who couldn't act to save their lives.

The times when actually fun, great movies were made locally is over as far as i can see.

It’s time for the red carpet to be laid out. Bollywood would also see the arrival of its ‘most exotic’ import ever - Jacqueline Fernandes.

All set to regale the audience with a lethal mix of cute persona and some sensuality, Jacqueline is finally being unveiled by the makers of Aladin. “Well, the journey has just begun. Last one year was quite happening but now it is going to be even more exciting times with Aladin being round the corner”, she says.

Over the last few months, Jacqueline was closely guarded for all the right reasons. 2008 had seen quite some noise being made around the number of newcomer girls (Asin, Anushka) while Aladin was still quite some distance away.

Says Sujoy Ghosh, the film’s director and co-producer, “There was no point for anyone associated with the film to gaga over Jacqueline because of two major reasons. First and foremost she had just stepped into the industry and she wanted to focus on doing a good job in her debut film. Secondly, it was felt that her being ‘exposed’ to millions out there so soon would have resulted in an over exposure.”

The protective director goes on to add, “Since Jacqueline is one of the four major protagonists of the film, other than Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Riteish Deshmukh, she has always been someone special. Now is the time for her to reach out to the world and I am sure Bollywood followers out there would be stunned with what they see of her.”

Jacqueline gets nostalgic while remembering the times she spent on the film’s sets, “Playing Jasmine was all fun and frolic with just the right ingredients of quintessential Bollywood ‘naach gaana’ routine and countless romantic and dramatic moments. It couldn’t have been a better start.”

Considering the fact that 2009 is perking up now after a dry beginning, it only makes Jacqueline’s arrival in the industry even more precious.

An import from Sri Lanka who already has a beauty pageant crown in her kitty (she was Miss Sri Lanka 2006), Jacqueline has been academically inclined as well, as apparent from her degree in Media and Communications from Sydney, Australia. Ambitious to the core, she had once stated - “Being independent and accomplished was imperative to me and I always demanded the best of myself. Perfectionism is my strongest asset.”

That’s something which is pretty much on display, as clear from her choice for her debut film Aladin which is a co-production of Eros and Sujoy’s ‘Boundscript’ and stars none other than Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt along with Riteish Deshmukh.

Says Jacqueline while spreading out that million dollar smile of hers, “The way Riteish’s character is fleshed out in the movie, it was all rather cute. However, nothing can beat the excitement of working with Mr. Bachchan and Mr. Dutt. In a way, they were just the antithesis of Riteish. I couldn’t have been luckier.”

The film EKAMATH EKA RATEKA (Once Upon a Time) is based on the story Pour une nuit d’amour written by the French novelist Emile Zola (1840-1904).

The young ravishing girl descending from a wealthy and noble family, whose strong character and the strange behaviour makes her parents unhappy. The parents decide to send her abroad to do her studies and also intending that their daughter will be well disciplined. The daughter and the nanny’s son who becomes a lawyer later on with the help of the noble family, had a strong friendship during their childhood.

The parents are trying to find a suitable partner to their young daughter who has come back after completing her studies. During this time, the daughter and nanny’s son are falling in love.

The nanny‘s encouragement and the blessings strengthen the young couple’s love. The girl falls in love with the music played by the ugly, bulky orphan with a deformed face who is living in front of her house. Her passion for the music leads her to a magnificently melodramatic climax as this deformed person imagines that this young girl loves him and his entire existence becomes built around young girl’s love.

As a result of this misunderstanding, the young couple confront with many difficulties. But one day the young girl beckons the deformed person to help her to dispose her lover’s dead body.

First-time director Milap Zaveri, who held two test screenings for his forthcoming film Jaane Kahaan Se Aayee Hai, will be re-shooting a few scenes based on the response in September. A love story between an earthling played by Riteish Deshmukh and an alien essayed by the Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandes, the shoot will take place in Mumbai. Among the sequences that will be re-shot, one will be between Vishal Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh. Said Zaveri, “The audiences loved their camaraderie. So I have deleted a one-minute scene and added one more scene between the two.”

As for the response generated by the two test screenings held in Mumbai, 93 per cent of the people labelled the film as good, very good or excellent, according to Zaveri. To ensure an unbiased response, 500-odd viewers were picked up from coffee shops and shopping malls.“Farah Khan’s scenes were the favourite, while Jacqueline’s and Riteish’s performances were loved by all,” said the director. Sri Lankan Film Bindu - at Sandeshaya Sri Lanka

‘Bindu’ is probably my most challenging project for I had to work with elephants in a majority of the scenes. It is tough shooting from different angles when you are directing animals,” he said adding that though he had used some animals in a couple of clips in ‘Sooriya Arana’ nothing had prepared him for the amount of hard work that had to be put up with while shooting ‘Bindu’.

Queried if he markets children’s movies as a means of earning profit, the award-winning director said, “I do not focus on how much money I would earn when I think of embarking on a project. However my films have been crowd-pullers and have earned their share of profit. If someone claims that I use children in key roles to make profit, their accusations are made purely out of jealousy. I concentrate on sending a meaningful message to society,” he stressed. However he revealed that his next project is not children oriented.

Jayalath Manoratne, Kumara Thirimadura, Jayani Senanayake, Athula Liyanage and a few others comprise the rest of the cast. Award winning actor of the stage play ‘Charandas’, Jayantha Muthuthanthri, debuts through ‘Bindu’. The script is by Dissanayake and the cameraman is Suminda Weerasuriya. Rohana Weerasinghe did the music scores for a song sung by a group of children led by Madugeeth Dissanayake. The art director is Sunil Wijeratne while the make up is done by Ebert Wijesinghe. The assistant director is Duminda Madawala. Renuka Balasuriya is the production manager and producer.

Story
by Ruwini Jayawardana

History is on its way to repeat itself. The dazzling spectacle of yesteryear star Vijaya Kumaratunga romancing Malani Fonseka will be recreated with a new stance when young actors Saliya Sathyajith and Shalika Edirisinghe takes to the screen and dances to the evergreen tunes sung by H.R. Jothipala.

Yasapalitha Nanayakkara’s hit film ‘Thushara’ remoulded by actor and producer turned director Sahan Wijesinghe boasts of the glamour of the past and more. The remake of the 1973 hit will begin screening at the LFD, MPI and NFC’s Rithma circuit cinemas islandwide from October 9. Significantly the day also marks the 64th birth anniversary of Vijaya Kumaratunga.

“Though we are advanced in technology I have always felt that the present movies lack the beauty of past hits. Movies made in the 1960s and 70s made use of the cream of the industry, from the stars in the lead roles to the music and plot. I have watched Nanayakkara’s ‘Thushara’ 26 times and I had the hope of doing a remake. There is a global interest towards making remakes. Some of our own movies like ‘Kadavunu Poronduwa’, ‘Sujatha’ and ‘Hathara Dennama Soorayo’ had also been revived with new faces and some of them have proven to be a success,” Wijesinghe noted the reasons for remaking the movie. He also said that movie-making is an extremely risky task today.

“There is lack of resources like good script writers, lyricists and vocalists. These three ingredients play key roles in a movie’s success. I had a choice between making an entirely new production and a remake. As the latter is less tricky, I chose to take it up,” he added.

Besides producing and directing the remake he had also taken up the role of the villain, originally acted by Baptist Fernando. He said that if the remake had been done 10 or 15 years ago he would have taken on the role of the hero.He noted, “I searched for actors to suit the characters for over a year and finally came upon Saliya. He possessed the charisma I was searching for and I believe Shalika is quite suited to the role.

Countries like India have a separate set of artistes for the mini screen and an entirely different cast for movies. I chose faces which do not appear often on television and during that stage. Saliya had only acted in one teledrama and Shalika, Pumi Purashinghe and Buddhika Rambukwella too were literally new faces to the audience. Now most of these artistes have joined teledramas. That is a drawback for my movie. They are professional actors and it is hard for them to survive entirely on films.”

The remake will retain the film’s eight original hit numbers ‘Jeewanaye Meewanaye’, ‘Meedum Gala Kande’, ‘Kalak Thisse’, ‘Epa Wunoth Heta One Wei, Rantharu Se (Hoi Hoi), Kavdo Ave, Mahada Obe Dayavi’, ‘Ho Ho Thushara’ and ‘Kalak Thisse’(duet) by H.R. Jothipala and Angeline Gunathilaka.

Robin Fernando, Rex Koddipilli, Chathura Perera, Chitra Wakishta, Anju Bandara, Lasantha de Alwis, Sonia Disa, Remenzi Fernando, Sarath de Silva, Rizwan Fa and others too play significant roles in the story.

Sarath de Alwis is the music director while K. D. Dayananda is the cameraman. “I had problems finding the money but NFC chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa and Sunil T. Fernando helped me out in a lot of matters. I have several movies in mind to remake before engaging on a production of my own but it all depends on how well ‘Thushara’ rolls. If I get back the sum I spent on the movie I would certainly focus on another one,” he admitted with a smile.

Ruwini Jayawardana
V. Sivadasan is no stranger to Sri Lankan cinema. With many years of experience as a teledrama and filmmaker and films like Hondin Nethnam Narakin, Obe Mata Vishvasi, Edath Chandiya Adath Chandiya and Oba Magema Vewa to his credit he had made a name as a popular director in the field. After a 15 year long silence the filmmaker is back with a new creation, Dakina Dakina Mal, which had completed shooting and is ready for release in theatres after Sirithunga Perera’s Kanyavi.

The film was shot in locations in Kandy, Kalutara, Bandaragama, Wadduwa and Colombo and is based on a true story. Aravinda who is employed at an Advertising Agency is leading a happy and contended life. He loves his wife and daughter and does not face any economic difficulties. On the whole he is very satisfied. God had been good to him but suddenly events unfold that shatters their happiness.

It all starts with his daughter’s illness. Research reveal that the young lass is suffering from a heart disease. Heartbroken and bitter about the turn of events, Aravinda finds no consolation from his wife who breaks down over the incident.

Enter Mandakini, a temptress, who lures Aravinda into her trap. Charmed by her seductive nature, Aravinda soon finds himself in deep trouble. Worse still, he discovers that Mandakini is not only a seductress but a woman who had connections with the underworld.

Dakina Dakina Mal is Sivadasan’s sixth movie. Damitha Abeyratne, Roshan Pilapitiya and Semini Iddamalgoda portray the lead roles backed by Roger Seneviratne, Diluni Mallawarachchi, Udeni Alwis, Hemantha Iriyagama, Sahan Wijesinghe, Anju Bandara, Kapila Sigera, Sarath de Silva, Maduka Gunatileke, Sujeewa Malkanthi and Nilanthi Dias. Sagarika Dharmapala makes her debut on cinema through the project which also marks producer Sunil T. Fernando’s 50th production.

The script is by Nihal Bandara Jayatileke. Norbert Rathnasiri is the cameraman, Kasun Malwattha is the editor, Priyantha Fernando is the assistant director, Sarath Wijesekara is the production executive and Sunil Wijedeva is the still photographer. Montague Sarachchandrara is the production coordinator. The art director is Sumith Hiran Fernando.

The music is by Somapala Ratnayake while the lyrics are penned by Somapala Lilananda and Bandula Nanayakarawasam. Nirosha Virajini, Mohan Raj Muththasami and Jayantha Ratnayake contribute in background vocals.

Naradha Godakumbura was in charge of the make up department and Sam Perera with the hair styles.

“Though the movie was previously titled Avare Tharakavi many told me that Dakina Dakina Mal is a better title. It is a suspense film which revolves around a family,” Sivadasan commented on the movie. He had been the laboratory chief at Vijaya Studios during the 1983 riots. Having entered cinema with Okkoma Rajawaru which starred Jeevan Kumaratunga, Sanath Gunatileke and Nadeeka Gunasekara, Sivadasan turned to teledramas later in his career. However he states that he is back into filmmaking as he is currently working on another cinematic creation.

Sinhala Film Maathaa Description
Award winning filmmaker, Boodee Keerthisena is to start his newest film ‘Maathaa’, a cinematic capture on the human drama that took place during the last phase of Sri Lankan war.

The film which will start its filming this month is to highlight some of the real incidents that took place and how people were affected by it.

“It will talk about many aspects like IDPs, human rescue and also the war itself which is considered as one of the unique wars that fought in the world,” Boodee said speaking to the TV Times.

Despite it being a film of war, there are several other underlined stories about love and other aspects of life.

“I always wanted to do a war film and when I thought seriously about this contemporary war, I asked myself why I don’t use it for my next direction,” Boodee said.

“There are many outsiders like those who were away from this country talk much about war and its stories. I want to recapture and show them what exactly happened during this decisive period,” he said.

In addition to the few well-known actors like Saumya Liyanage, Sarath Kotelawala and Vasantha Vittachchi, a large number of new comers will make their debut appearance with ‘Maathaa’.

“Starring real life actors, the roles of different ethnic groups will be played by actors from each respective ethic groups. In addition a large number of army personnel also will play specially the war scenes of the film,” the director said.

Nearly 60 days of shooting will cover the actual war sites and locations in and around Colombo.

Super Six Story
With a star studded cast that includes Roshan Ranawana and Sanath Gunathilake and debuts by former Miss Sri Lanka Aruni Rajapakse, Director Udaya Palliyaguruge’s Super Six is a film that combines the influences of romance, comedy, action and fantasy. This is the first movie to be launched in Sri Lanka after the end to the war and is also the country’s largest commercial budgeted movie standing at a production cost of Rs 77 million. A totally Sri Lankan cast of over 600, which includes 160 in supporting cast, 80 technical and a host of extras handpicked for their talent ensure a one of a kind movie experience. According to Palliyaguruge who holds a degree in Cinema from the Asian Academy of Film and TV India and Diplomas in Fine Arts and Mass Media as well as Film Making from the New York Film Academy USA coins the genre of this film as “Jollywood’, stating that it incorporates all emotions and senses known to the human mind and spirit. “With cricket being Sri Lanka’s national pastime, Super Six revolves around a group of youth from Moratuwa participating in the Super Sixes, a six a side tournament,” he said at the launch of the movie at a gala event held at Cinnamon Grand Colombo. “There are unpredictable perils of fate and destiny that are intertwined in each of these young people’s lives while they strive to achieve their dreams on the singular platform of the cricket pitch. But the rivalry between the teams spillover into their off-the-pitch lives although the ultimate lessons are the values they learn from each other in this ‘Super Sixes’ tournament.”

As head of Aristo Films which is a 100% Sri Lankan film Production Company formed in 2005, Palliyaguruge also combines the genius of R Sadesh Kumar into the film, revolutionizing the movie industry with their debut into commercial films which films on location in both Sri Lanka and Malaysia and uses technical resources from India as well. This is also the first time that an ARRI 435 camera is being used with Kodak Vision 3 Film, which signals superior film quality. In addition, the Director has removed all stops to his creativity, gaining the expertise of a choreographer and professional stuntmen from India as well as incorporating aerial views from a specially commissioned helicopter to add to the nuances of movie. Seven especially composed songs comprise the movie soundtrack.

As the Director enthuses, the movie is a combination of extraordinary elements brought together to imbue a great movie experience. “Super Six is a first of its kind movie in Sri Lanka, not only from a budgetary angle, but also from the extent of the cast, the catalogue of multi-talented actors of who some are celebrities making their debut in the film world, the technical features of high quality camera and film work, music, locations and even infusion of added features like stuntmen and a highly celebrated Indian choreographer. For me, just like for the Super Six team, this is a dream come true.” (IB)

Story (http://www.sandeshaya.org/sri-lankan-sinhala-film-vidhu-by-asoka-handagama-at-sandeshaya-sri-lanka/)
Finally, Handagama has broken ice. It was the second welcoming news of this year, relating to Sri Lankan cinema, after the news that Chinta and Udaya managed to arrange a premiere of their debut How I Wonder What You Are. The invitation stated “Asoka Handagama is back with a difference.” The “difference” was too hard to predict, given that Handagama was/is a relentless rebelpar excellence, surviving in the alternative wave he established. Having directed five features, he could screen only two locally, while the rest were censored and/or forbidden. After the aborted mission with Aksharaya (Letters of Fire), Handagama’s dominant silence gave a warning that Sri Lanka was not a space for free expression. In this context, the impending ‘difference’ seemed an anaesthetic to the cankering deadliness of the present cinema at home.

The film features an adolescent boy called Vidhu, presumably, an offshoot of a politician. With no birth certificate,
he is denied access to free education. His mother, a prostitute and pickpocket, educates him and pushes him up the ladder. With his inborn skill of speaking, he overwhelms the whole country and achieves what he has been “dreaming in daylight.” Simultaneously, the politician, insinuated to be his father, tries to manoeuvre Vidhu to attract audiences to his superior’s election rallies. The catalyst of the film revolves around the politicians’ arduous attempt at manipulating the child into speaking on the political stage, and the child’s resistance to speaking on the school stage at the same time. The story entails a layer of fantasy, and achieves a closure similar to that of Slumdog Millionaire.

In terms of commercial concerns, undoubtedly, Vidhu is going to be the hit of the year. Unlike the hitherto made Handagama films, this is a film ‘for the whole family.’ After the premiere, the majority seemed quite ‘satisfied,’ and almost everyone I spoke to and overheard, was applauding Handagama’s “difference.” The film embodies many aspects of a successful commercial film, as it is packed with action, suspense, mystery, humour and emotions. With the shift of the usual approach, the director allows his film to be dominated by colourful images and flamboyant music resembling a rock music style. More notably, unlike in Aksharaya, Thani Thatuwen Piyabanna, and Me Mage Sandai, Handagama appeals to the emotions of the audience and makes them shed tears. The scene of Vidhu’s speech on the tree, with a stolen microphone, is an ideal example in this regard. This is a colossal departure in the Handagam style, which used to address the intellect of the audience, rather than emotions; the spectators’ head, not their heart. Instantly, the film filled me with enormous pleasure, because Handagama is able to prove himself to be versatile with it. His filmography, oftentimes, made him vulnerable to be stigmatized as a “freak” by some Sri Lankan cinema ‘intellectuals’. His war films were invariably branded as part of NGO sponsored anti-governmental projects. In the case of Thani Thatuwen Piyabanna, all the cinematic conceits were undermined by the over emphasised fact that he had exposed his wife’s nudity. Finally, with Vidhu, he pats his critics’ heads and knocks on them, exhibiting his capability to excel in the Somarathna Dissanayake tradition. Of course, Vidhu presents a criticism of the contemporary economic and socio-political issues of Sri Lanka. Vidhu’s mother has to “sin”, to keep the son alive. As she says to the son, her value vacillates by the day, and when it has no value, she cannot help but pick pockets. The politician, a former lover of hers, typifies a Sri Lankan politician entrapped in the impenetrable mire of corruption and misuse of power. However, unfortunately, the social criticism presented by the film does not contain an iota of the highly trenchant Handagama style, which is profound and poetic. Also, the character of the politician is relegated to a caricature, heightening the sense of humour. In these terms, I was overwhelmed by a recurring sense of sadness, on second thoughts. Considering that this was made by Handagama, the undaunted pioneer of an alternative wave, Sri Lankan cinematic wave, the unprecedented ‘difference’ is tragic.
In fact, more than a ‘difference’, it is a colossal transformation. As a friend of mine commented, “This is Handagama’s metamorphosis from the butterfly with one wing to a wingless caterpillar”. In my opinion, he was not a butterfly, but a poisonous wasp. Eventually, his fangs have been removed, and made him a butterfly, tamed and confined in a deadly cocoon. This situation raises the need to see as to why this ‘evolution’ was necessitated. As Handagama emphasised at the premiere, the film is “made for children”. Frankly, it is made to pacify infantile temperaments of ‘adults’, in relevant authoritative bodies in charge of the cinema, who valourise ‘children’s films’.
Eventually, Handagama has been relegated to another supplier of commodities, and the shrine he built with his
previous films has been desecrated thus. Vidhu kills one of the last remaining hopes for Sri Lankan cinema, and by
no means is Handagama martyred in this death. The only remaining hope would be to assume that Handagama has
been aware of his metamorphosis.

Story
Sinhawalokanya is the latest sinhalese film. Recently they released the previews of this film which combines fast and present of Sri Lankan life. This film has many other remarkable features that one may prompt himself to go the theater.
Popular singer and upcoming actress Raini Charuka Gunathilaka (Rookantha & Chandralekha’s daughter) play a main role in this film. Other than her two other special Sri Lankans from different fields also join the film as actors. Yes DeLon Jayasinghe and Thilakarathna Dilshan also in this film. DeLon Jayasinghe is a USA based singer who played a big part during the North East war. He was the one who could reveal MIAS’s baseless comments against Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan army.
We all know who Thilakarathan Dilshan is and what his talents are. So cricket lovers have another reason to watch this movie other than that the story is based on a cricket match. This film has been both written and directed by SUneth Malinga Lokuhewa. Following are official preview of the film and few promotional posters.

“The Cricket Film 2011 Sinhawalokanaya- Upcoming Massive Period Film will Re-Boot the Entire Sri Lankan Cinema with Sri Lankan Film Industry’s First Collaboration with Universal Pictures and Fox Search Light! This is a film that showing the epic battle and struggle a group of uneducated? villagers went through to get its independence back in 1948 and its discusses a “secret” what happened between 1947 November and to talk about how Sri Lanka got its independence in 1948! This is Not a Re Make of? Lagaan. Lagaan was a film about a Land Tax. This is not about Land Tax. neither it features anything to do with lagaan. THIS IS ABOUT CRICKET.. 1ST SRILANKAN CRICKET FILM”.

I need to have to admit that that is 1 fantastic insight. It surely gives a company the opportunity to have in around the ground floor and really take part in creating a thing particular and tailored to their needs.

Bombay being created in Sri Lanka for Ranbir-Anushka film
Hiren Kotwani, TNN | May 22, 2013, 12.00 AM IST

Come July, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will start shooting for Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet'. However, the film will not be shot in Mumbai, but in Sri Lanka. Reason being that the skyline of the island city has changed over the decades and the upcoming monsoon could affect the shoot. Apparently, it's going to cost the producers approximately 22 crore to recreate the Bombay of the 1950s through '70s, the period in which the story is set.

Says a source, "Unlike Mumbai, which has monsoon from mid-June to mid-September, the weather is comparatively dry in Sri Lanka during that time. Four acres have been marked off near Colombo, where art director Sonal Sawant will put up sets to recreate old Bombay."

Explaining why Kashyap couldn't do the same in Mumbai since they're building rain-proof sets, our source says, "It's more expensive to build the sets here. We'll need extensive permissions as it will take about a month and a half only to get the sets built. Plus, managing the municipal corporation, police and other organisations will also add to the costs. We might as well spend the extra amount on travel and accommodation in Lanka."

We tried to get in touch with Anurag and his co-producer Vikas Bahl, but they were unavailable for comment.
