Water treatment plant ends reliance on Singapore

KOTA TINGGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi opened the Semangar plant near here yesterday to mark the end of Johor’s dependence on Singapore for treated water for the past 77 years.

He said the opening of the plant was more than just marking a new chapter in the nation’s history.

It also proved Malaysian companies could provide good facilities for the people, he said.

“This is a success story that we should all be proud of. The people of Johor can now enjoy clean water that is treated by a local company,” he said.

SAJ Holdings Sdn Bhd, which manages the plant, had invested RM650mil on the project which will provide 160 million litres of water a day to users in the state, with an excess of about 30 million litres daily.

The project's next phase would increase the capacity to more than 320 million litres daily.

Commending SAJ Holdings, Abdullah said he was satisfied with its commitment to reduce non-revenue water losses from 30% to 10% over the next few years and reminded it to always maintain the quality of treated water supplied to consumers. The late Sultan Ibrahim of Johor signed an agreement with the Commissioner of the Singapore Municipal Council to buy treated water from the republic on Dec 5, 1927.

The council was given the right to use water at the Gunung Pulai catchment area for free and to sell it to Johor at 25 sen per 1,000 gallons, not exceeding 1,200 gallons a day.

Another agreement was signed on Sept 1, 1961, allowing Singapore to draw raw water from Sungai Skudai and Sungai Tebrau at three sen per 1,000 gallons until 2011, while a third agreement, signed on Sept 29, 1962 allowed the republic to draw water from Sungai Johor for up to 250 million gallons daily at three sen per 1,000 gallons.

Under the 1961 and 1962 agreements, Johor bought treated water at a rate of 50 sen per 1,000 gallons and up to 37 million gallons daily from Singapore’s Public Utilities Board for Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi and Pontian. At another function in Kluang, Abdullah instructed all state governments to give their co-operation to the Agriculture Ministry to open up more modern and large-scale farms.

The state governments should not impose any conditions or restrictions when offering their land for such projects, he said when launching a modern agriculture project at the Padang Hijau Livestock Breeding Centre, near Batu 11 Kahang here.

The project, a joint venture between the ministry and 20 private companies, includes livestock breeding, farming, fisheries, recreation and agro-tourism.

At a dinner in honour of his working visit to Johor last night, Abdullah reminded Barisan Nasional component parties to be prepared at all times for the general election although he had yet to decide when it should be held.

“Please don’t ask me when (the election is). It is a difficult question for me to answer but the most important thing is that if it is held tomorrow, we are prepared. If it is held later, we are even more prepared.

“We must face the election with our strength, which is our good track record and our commitment to work together for the people,” he said.

“I'm confident that Barisan can continue to experience 100% victory in Johor and the rakyat will not hesitate to give their support,” he added.

Johor to stop buying treated S'pore water
It will start phasing out the purchases from June, says CM

JOHOR will stop buying treated water from Singapore in August after concessionaire SAJ Holdings completes distribution pipe laying works in the state, The Star reported yesterday quoting Johor Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman.

'We will start to phase out (water purchases from Singapore) beginning June,' he told StarBiz.

Confirming that SAJ Holdings was on track to complete the job, Ranhill Utilities Bhd (RUBhd) chief executive Ahmad Zahdi Jamil said: 'We will finish laying the pipes in July and will start supplying treated water to Johor Baru district, Pontian and Kota Tinggi in August.' RUBhd is a subsidiary of listed Ranhill and the holding company of SAJ Holdings.

Under the existing agreement signed in 1962 between Malaysia and Singapore, Johor sells raw water to the city-state at three sen per 1,000 gallons. The water is then processed by Singapore's Public Utilities Board at its facility in Gunung Pulai, Johor, before being piped to the city state.

Johor currently buys back from Singapore about 12 per cent of Johor Baru district's treated water requirement. Mr Zahdi said SAJ Holdings would provide the replacement supply from its new RM649 million (S$288.5 million) Semanggar water treatment plant in Kota Tinggi.

The Semanggar plant can treat 35 million gallons per day (mgd) under the first phase, but the capacity can be expanded by another 35 mgd in the second phase.

The Star cited an analyst saying Johor's move towards self-reliance in treated water would be good for RUBhd as it sought more business in the southern part of the country.

Ranhill president and CEO Hamdan Mohamad had said RUBhd was looking to sell more water to Malacca. RUBhd, he added, was also hopeful of an opportunity to sell treated water to Singapore once the water issue between the two countries was resolved.

Mr Hamdan said the company would be investing a substantial amount to set up the infrastructure for water resources in Sedili and Endau for that purpose.

'We see the potential to sell up to 100 mgd to Singapore and we hope to start doing so in 2011, the year that the water agreement expires,' he added.

It is still OUB Centre as the branding still hasn't merged in Singapore for some reason ;)

Both are one bank but they are still operating like different banks (in terms of branding).....very strange! :D

Yeah its strange, but not entirely unusual here! :D When DBS bought over POSB, the POSB brand name is still very much in existance today, and they even started a POSB credit card a few years ago. DBS has basically decided to keep the brand.

If I am not wrong, UOB intends to phrase our the OUB brand name over time. If it is true, we might have a little game guessing what the name of the OUB Centre will be! :D

Well....OUB had been in Malaysia as long as it has been in Singapore....maybe the impact is lesser lah. But anyway.....when the banks here merged.....familiar names disappeares overnite too. Even UOB's changed of name seems to happen overnight - anyone here remembers when UOB used to be called Chung Kiaw Bank? ( I dunno if I get the spelling correct or not! :D )

From The Star

Thousands throng Causeway

BY MAZWIN NIK ANIS

JOHOR BARU: Thousands of Singaporeans will come in droves to Malaysia whenever there are public holidays, festive celebrations and long weekends being celebrated in the republic, and this weekend is no exception.

Singaporeans and Malaysians working in the republic are taking the opportunity to visit the country, as Singapore is celebrating its National Day tomorrow.

For Singaporeans, it is an opportunity to visit the many interesting places in Malaysia and to experience its culinary delights as well as its colourful sights and sounds.

For Malaysians working there, the long holidays are put to good use as they return home to visit family and friends.

The Causeway as well as the Second Link began to see cars queuing to enter the country as early as 6am yesterday and the traffic volume shot up by the thousands by midday.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2004/8/8/nation/p8pasport.jpg
PACKED WITH PEOPLE: Singaporeans queuing for immigration clearance at the Causeway yesterday. Despite all the counters being opened, lines were long for the thousands who showed up.
An Immigration Department official said the high traffic volume was anticipated and all immigration clearance booths for vehicles and counters for pedestrians were opened to ensure smooth flow.

?We expect the situation to remain like this over the weekend, and on Monday one can expect roads leading to the Causeway and Singapore to be jammed as the people make their way back home,? the official said.

For Steve Douglas, an Australian working in Singapore, the long holiday gave him an opportunity to visit neighbouring Malaysia with his family.

?We love visiting Malaysia and this time, I am taking my two kids and wife to Bukit Tinggi,? he said.

At the pedestrian section of the Causeway, thousands were seen queuing up waiting for immigration clearance despite all the counters being opened.

Most of the visitors were believed to be Singaporeans as there were hardly any queues at the lanes for Malaysian-passport holders.

Sabahan Marcus Leong, 32, who is working in Singapore, said he wanted to visit his friends who were working in Johor Baru.

?I haven?t met them for ages and I would rather spend my holidays with them instead of being home alone in Singapore,? he said.

Genting and Star Cruises bidding for S’pore casino

SINGAPORE: Genting Bhd and Star Cruises Ltd have submitted a joint bid to develop a Singapore resort that may include the city-state’s first casino.

The companies were bidding for two sites that the Singapore government was considering for the project, Genting said in a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange yesterday. The companies plan to each own half of the project.

Singapore is considering a casino-resort to meet its target of doubling annual visitor arrivals to 17 million within a decade and tripling tourist spending. It may scrap a long-standing ban on casinos to attract visitors.

The Government is considering building the resort on a downtown waterfront site or on Sentosa island, though it may also allow development at both sites.

The resort might include hotels, a convention centre, retail outlets and restaurants, the Government said.

Wynn Resorts Ltd, a Las Vegas-based casino company led by Stephen Wynn, and Kirk Kerkorian’s MGM Mirage were among those which submitted plans for the resort yesterday. – Bloomberg

Errrr.....Hainan Chicken rice not only limited to Singapore lah :D

Anyway there are so many things like French Fries and French Toast isn't French. So is Singapore Noodle.....which could only be found in Malaysia....hahahaha

I guess we can't call some of the food that are found in Singapore or Malaysia originates from either country because both countries were a single entity prior to 1965. No one actually documented how and when Hainanese Chicken were introduced. :D

In terms of food.....one would find more similarities than differences between Malaysia and Singapore. ;)

As I recounted before, the version here merges Haineses cooking styles with the Cantonese one, and then adds a bit of southeast asian tastes into it, so I am not surprised the Hainanese dont know a shit about this dish! :D

hmmm....the taste of food is different from shop to shop in Malaysia too...hahaha...joking :D

Anyway from my experience, the food is almost if not the same. Walk into any food court in Singapore and the food offered is 80% similar to any Malaysian foodcourt. The 20% difference is perhaps some weird offshoots from the original dishes that might have acquired by the tastebuds of people from their respective country. Another main difference is the price which doubles everything one could find in Malaysia :D :D :D

But seriously lah.....my last few trips to Singapore had really made me think of Singaporean food differently. They taste and looks better....and the portion is larger......much better than my previous experiences when a very expensive tasteless fried rice at Lau Pa Sat with some ketchup rules the day hahaha. seriously.......but that was the early 90s lah :D

wow.....variety ar? There are so so many....I can't cimply remember em all hehe :D In fact different Mamaks (normally 24hrs restaurants owned by Indian Muslims) have diff verity of Rotis.

The normal ones (mainstream) which could almost be found anywhere are:

1) Roti Canai biasa (normal)
2) Roti Telur (egg)
3) Roti Telur Bawang (egg and onion)
4) Roti Sardine (sardine)
5) Roti Planta (margerine)
6) Roti Tissue (sugar and shaped like a tall cone)
7) Roti Salad (salad-like)
8) Roti Pisang (banana)
9) Roti Bom (sugar and some sweet stuffs)

Not so mainstream which are quite popular but not available everywhere are:

1) Roti Milo (Milo)
2) Roti Horlick (Horlick)
3) Roti Titanic (I have no idea)

As what to be served with these rotis.....there are 3 choices (some places offer more):

2) Fish curry
3) Chicken curry

Erm... I am judging from Penang's vs Singapore's... they are named similarly but totally different in look and taste... one good example will be Laksa... well.. Singaporeans will name Penang's Laksa as PENANG LAKSA... while Penangnites will definitely call the Singapore' laksa.. the Curry Mee... This is one major different... and then perhaps the Ice Kacang in Malaysia and Singapore are totally different... am I correct? Well... this is what I think... :bash: :bash: :bash:

At the moment Singapore is doing very well...I think they are actually rebranding themself as a city of commerce and arts in sophisticated part of South East Asia. French is european cusine la and very costly in London too.

But still some of the most expensive restaurants in London are Chinese restaunrants surrounding the up market neibourhood..to target on those rich Hong Kong people who usually send their childrens to study in England. Whenever the reunion comes..they have to book the table in advance..the restaurnt would usually spend few days to gether the finest ingredient such as bird nest, sea lion cock...etc ( and spice, herbs usually ban in the UK). :nono:

That is why I said they should change!

But I think it is definitely nicer than those 'short tight skirts with jacket' kinda airline uniform......those very typical of almost all major airlines leh! :D

massage chairs, inflight entertainment on a bus.. what a nice concept..can you identify which company provides that kind of bus.

Now you can find the excuse to sleep in an extra comfy environment, much better than flight anyway!

How was the response to the travel fair...cos I think it's easier to drive into malaysia..iIbelieve the fair mostly caters destinations in east Malaysia.

Hmm...not a bad idea to have a massage chair, especially for long-haul trips. You'll neeed something to circulate the bloods after hours of sitting.

I wonder if they have the equivalent of flight attendant on that bus too, in that case, a "bus steward/stewardess".

Transtar cost RM70.00 if bought from Malaysia. If you want I could buy it here and sent it to ya ;) I dunno where to get Five Star buses.....amybe you could furnish me the details ;)

This luxury bus thingy was first started by MARA Executive Coach. Then Aeroline started those in-bus wntertainment thingy and now others hae taken bus luxury to a new height

I think Aeroline is offering massagin chairs soon too. ;)

I am also surprised that most local express buses (even the cheap ones) are no longer 4-seats abreast. In fact all are 3-seats abreast and all have airline's business class seat pitch as well as leg rests!
