But what do you mean by "mini la defense" ?

Density, concept,... ?

Great Update!

I've been in Brussels and Antwerp last week and I was really surprised about the large-scale development taking place in both cities! I was particularly pleased by the fact that both cities try to get rid of their postwar urban failures!

@himer

Could you also give some information on low-rise developments?

Yes, martini tower and Rogier tower are the same.

Indeed the real name is CIR : Centre International Rogier, but an advertisement (for martini) on the top of the old Rogier tower has given a new name to this tower.

A further name will be “Dexia tower”, through the owner of the new tower.

That’s true and it’s quite amazing for some parts of these cities. There are not only buildings but also urban environment that will be reorganized.
About Brussels: renovation of boulevards in the centre, parks, a new pedestrian in the centre; a new national theatre; new tramways; new undergrounds trains; a new rail network for the suburbs …

The Atomium, the north station, the midi station, the justice palace, several churches, several underground stations, the anspak centre, “the innovation” (one of greater commercial centre in the city), “the administrative city” are going to be renovated or are under renovation.

Many low-rises are under development but I can’t post any pics, practically all architect’s web site have been made with flash, sorry.

Anyway, some pictures from a non-architect's web site.

I can't undersatnd why so little is known about Brussels when there are so many projects as this. I presume the comparison to la defence reffered to the fact that it's a highrise district with a nice progression of heights. The lowrise developments look superb as well, especially the swiss life headquarters.

Madou Tower

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v291/giergel/Brussel/Madou/Dscf1965.jpg
The Madou Tower is renovated to a beautiful skyscraper. I think it's one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in Belgium. It has a height of 120 meters. The top of the building is made of iron and white glass, that counts 10 meters.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v291/giergel/Brussel/Madou/Dscf1968.jpg
The tower dominates the whole area.

The total sq/m office space available in the north space: + - 1.370.200 sq/m
(Projets/constructions are not included)

This is included only buildings in the Espace Nord - Noordruimte . (North Space) which is only a part of the north of the city. The Atomium is situated in the north of this district but the place which atomium is located is not called “North district”.

In reality the “North Space” is in the center of the city and located along the Boulevard Albert II.

Thanks for those pics :)

I have a proposal for the WTC towers :

Built the eight tower and then connect all those 8 buildings with a kind of sail on top of them so the square below can be used as a giant pedestrian area to be used all year round !

In 1964 politics planned to build two freeways between the 8 wtc towers. The 2 freways were supposed to cross each other perpendicularly (superimposed) between the 8 towers. One of them to connect Gent-Oostende and liège. The other one to connect Antwerpen and Paris.

Pedestrians bridges were supposed to connect the 8 towers 13m above the street.

:runaway: AMAZING!!!! Can you go on the Finance Tower????

I would like to go there again but I can't.
A visit was organised by the "Pleinopenair" during this summer.

I hope that you will carry out your dream.

Is that the height of where the towers exactly begin then ?

Wtc 1 and wtc 2 have been built on a base which is 13m tall. There is the same base with wtc3, the manhattan center and the amelinckx tower. Pedestrian bridges were supposed to connect all bases together and pedestrians were supposed to walk on those bases. On original plan there were no entry at the ground level.

Tower 8 could be built but when ??

The construction of the last wtc has been approved by the belgian governement but there is no money to built it at the moment.

Dead? The galaxy towers (102m) are just finished, now they nuilding the Dexia Tower (144m), Royal Rogier (100m) , Block 65 (85m) and soon they will renovate the finance tower (120m). You call this dead???

The future plans are quite dead though! This was just a short-term live-up after decades of slow building.

On 1 km² (Projects/constructions) :
Galaxy tower I : 110m, Galaxy tower II : 110m (not finished yet), Dexia Tower 144m, Royal Rogier (100m), Block 65 (85m), finance tower (140m), TBR (+-150m), Block 61 (100m), Bolivard (100 – 150m ?), wtc 4 (105m) …

If there are no other projects it’s because there is no place to build anything more.

On this picture practically everything has been built since 1994… (Excepted Wtc and the manhattan center.)

Thanks for those pics :)

Nobody has maps, maquette's or other documentation about the megalomaniac manhattan project from the '60 ?

Weird, Brussel is easily one of the most active European cities in terms of construction but it hardly receives any replies. So even here on this forum Belgium maintains its image of the traditional underdog. :sleepy:

Anyway, I followed one of the links posted on the first page and came up with this amazing looking project.

Hi Einzelgänger,
I looked at the 'Brusels tower'- link you supplied. Thanks! A very nice project! At last something really contemporary on a high architectural level. Next to the rather boring towers of the architect Jaspers & Co or Montois, it's outstanding and eye-catching! (what a pity that jaspers signed for allmost every project in the 'espace Nord'... He must have pretty good ploitical connections... :ohno: )
Is this project approved ? if yes, when are renvations starting ?
if no, I hope the Brussels region will not be as stupid again to decline it, so another uggly compromise has to be looked for...
