Eko Atlantic City is a planned district of Lagos, Nigeria, being constructed on land reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean.[1] Located on Lagos’ Bar Beach; the proposed development is targeting 400,000 residents and 250,000 commuters flowing daily to the new island. The development will also have a positive environmental impact; its purpose is to stop the erosion of the Lagos coastline. [2]

Adjacent to Victoria Island, Eko Atlantic will rise as the next generation of property in Africa. Expected to be around 4 square miles, the city will satisfy needs for: financial, commercial, residential, and touristic accommodations. These needs will easily be satisfied with a state of the art high-tech infrastructure that will be in line with modern and environmental standards. These standards will offer the city’s residents better water, waste management, security, and transportation. Eko Atlantic will also offer its residents an independent source of energy, generated specifically for the city.[citation needed]

Eko Atlantic will be a powerhouse for Nigeria and all of West Africa. The project is expected to have an immensely positive impact on Lagos, as well as Nigeria in general. Throughout the entire project’s lifetime thousands of jobs will be created as well as providing a state of the art business district for West Africa.

As of May 2009, the project is still in its dredging phase. Already, a total of about 3,000,000 cubic metres (3,900,000 cu yd) has been sand-filled and placed in the reclamation area, while about 35,000 tonnes of rock has been delivered to the site.[2] As such, in certain parts of Bar Beach, the land being reclaimed can already be seen. Dredgers, large ships which move sand, are working around the clock filling the area with sand where the city will be built.

The Lagos State government has restated the commitment of the Babatunde Fashola administration to the realization of the Eko Atlantic City dream project which has been described as the Dubai of Africa when completed.

This assurance was given at a Media Conference held at Eko Hotel on Wednesday 29, October 2008l and jointly addressed by the State Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Prince Adesegun Oniru and the Project Consultant and Managing Director of Energyx Ltd, Mr. David Frame.

Speaking on the feasibility of the project, David Frame who described himself as a resident of Lagos for the past 18 years said, “while you may think it is an ambitious plan, we know it is feasible. It is a very unique project. It will be the Dubai of Africa when completed. We are building a city of 21st century standard. We have consulted wide and far and we are still consulting. Our initial consultations were on the perennial problems of the ocean surge at the Bar Beach. That took us as far as Holland where we got the consultants now handling the Eko Atlantic City project with a track record of over 100 years. As you perhaps know, the Dutch have a great history of battling and conquering the ocean dating back to about 400 years. Those are the hands we have employed for the Eko Atlantic City project.”

He also spoke on the credentials of the Chinese company currently handling the sand filling of the sections of the Atlantic ocean where the new city is expected to spring up saying, “CCCG of China is the largest dredging company in China. They have examined the projects and they know with us it can be done.

When completed, the Eko Atlantic City will have a city landscape that will rival that of any conquerable land anywhere in the world. ..

no the renders above, in the beginning of the page, are more of a mass...individual firms will choose their style of architecture...

But the renders shown in the last video of the financial district is how the financial center will look once completed...below
