BulldozerGirl February 22nd, 2004, 03:12 PM Great photos, as usual, Dubai_Boy - mashAllah 3alayk.
LOL. Why have they written "Mall" in Arabic as well?
When is it scheduled to be completed?
And I also read that Bahrain is making a large indoor ski slope in another thread. Is that a good thing or is it a stupid copy?
BulldozerGirl March 13th, 2004, 12:12 AM I drove past the Mall of the Emirates area yesterday and saw the new bridge - it has changed so much. I haven't been there in ages.
I have heard that the Mall of the Emirates will be the third largest mall in the world, and the largest outside of America. But I have also heard that the Dubai mall which will be near the Burj Dubai, will be the world's largest mall? So what is exactly the story here?
Did I understand something wrong?
BulldozerGirl March 13th, 2004, 12:17 AM It seems I misunderstood from what Dubai_Boy said in another thread about the Dubai mall being "the best mall" in the world and "the momma of all malls". Usually "momma" of something means big - that's why you have "your momma is so fat" jokes.
Now it makes sense. I was wondering how on Earth the world's largest mall was going to be around the Burj Dubai, and with the Mall of the Emirates and Dubailand there is no space.
ahmedr March 13th, 2004, 02:21 PM BulldozerGirl, you've been here for a very long time and you still dont know that the Dubai Mall is going to be the world's largest mall. Dubai forumers dont even question this any more because its been really hyped on the news websites, there's an update of whats new in the Dubai Mall's plans almost every week on Dubai's news websites and they mention its going to be the world's largest at the end of every article. Dubailand is also going to have the worlds largest mall when built but theres very little news about that. Its going to be called "Mall of Arabia".
BulldozerGirl March 13th, 2004, 04:55 PM Originally posted by ahmedr

This is even more confusing :? The Dubai mall is different than the Mall of Arabia that will be in Dubailand, right? So how can both be the world's largest mall? Or will one of them be ready before the other so it will be the biggest for a short while until the other one opens?
So this makes the Mall of the Emirates in the al-Barsha area the third largest in the UAE, correct? Now the UAE has 3 huge malls - how big is the city of Dubai to be able to handle all of this? There's no space!
Darkknight March 13th, 2004, 06:42 PM Oh trust me
theres space all right. the dubai mall will be the largest mall in the world which will be topped by the mall of america which is undergoing expansion. the one in dubai land is going to be bigger than all of them becomeing the largest mall in the world. Its simple!!!!!! Dubai keeps building higher and larger if the other guys plan something to top it.
dubai_dude March 14th, 2004, 03:36 AM Damn it, i'm starting to hate malls now so many soo big
if someone was on a tour of dubai, who would want to spent their time in visiting three huge malls. one big huge mall will be good and a much flashy downtown area will be good too.
Perhaps, cutting one mall and build a much flashy downtown would be better.
dubai_dude March 14th, 2004, 03:42 AM why does it say "Mall of Emirates" in hindi on the 7th picture?
why not other languages too?
lol...lol
Darkknight March 14th, 2004, 05:17 AM lol thats not mall of emirates written in Hindi!! I dont know why they wrote that there, but it means 'SLOWLY'. Must be some company's logo!!! :D :guns1:
elfreako March 14th, 2004, 08:12 AM Why have they written "Mall" in Arabic as well?
How would an Arab pronounce it? "Mool"? LOL!
dubai_dude March 14th, 2004, 08:51 AM Arab also pronounce "hello" as "alloo". i also like to see the mispelled word "salon" as "saloon" LOL
BulldozerGirl March 14th, 2004, 07:03 PM Three of the biggest malls in the world in Dubai is just crazy. The future generations will run out of space.
dubai_dude - "saloon" with two o's is still correct. You can say this is a "saloon" car, and cowboys used to have saloons. A salon is where you can have your hair done and can also mean a hall or sitting room of some sort (check a dictionary). Both words exist, and neither can be regarded as a mispelling.
Dubai_Boy has already posted enough pics, but here's one of the Mall of the Emirates construction from a distance. The number of cranes is insane.

Vespa March 14th, 2004, 08:14 PM It looks incredible! :omg:
dubai_dude March 15th, 2004, 12:22 AM this many cranes, can only be found in dubai
good angle for the picture bulldozer girl
TYW March 16th, 2004, 04:11 PM the projects sounds cool. how big is it gonna be?? (in square feet)

Hotel contract for Mall of Emirates is awarded
The main contract for the construction of the new hotel at the Mall of the Emirates has been awarded to Al Jaber Grinaker in joint venture with Bu Haleeba. The hotel will be strategically located just off Interchange 4 of Sheikh Zayed Road in the Al Barsha area.
The contract calls for the construction of an 18-storey hotel with 400 keys. Two basement parking areas and two retail levels interface with a ski slope and shopping development that is in progress on the site.
The building area is 82 000 m2 and will require 35 000 m3 of concrete, 170 000 m2 of formwork and 4500 tonnes of reinforcement. The contract duration is 18 months and will expire in November 2005.
The Dhs218 million contract was awarded by Majid Al Futtaim Investments through a tendering process. Other companies involved in the project are Mace International as project managers; Holford Associates the architect, Davis Langdon Arabian Gulf for QS, Mott MacDonald as structural engineers; and WSP Middle East for the MEP works. Meanwhile, construction works on Mall of the Emirates continues to move forward at a clip, with the project looking on track for its target completion in September 2005.
Work on the project is clearly visible from the highway and preparations are already underway for production of the real snow, which will be utilised within. Mall of Emirates will play home to over 350 shops and more than 240 000 m2 of prime retail and leisure space, making it one of the biggest malls outside North America. Progress on one of the complex’s key features, the first snow dome and indoor ski slope in the Middle East, is well underway.
“This is one of the most ambitious mall projects in the world, certainly outside of North America,” says Peter Walichnowski, chief executive officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments, “Even now the construction site illustrates the sheer scale of the project and the fact we are on schedule is testament to the commitment of the entire team” he added.

texasboy June 21st, 2004, 07:49 AM I hate to break it too you all, but the Houston Galleria in the U.S. is way larger than this mall. The Houston Galleria is one of the most exclusive shopping centers in the world as far as shopping. The Houston Galleria has stores like Bally of Switzerland, BCBG Max Azria, Burberry, Cartier, Chanel, The Cheesecake Factory, Christian Dior, Coach, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Godiva Choclatier, Gucci, Hermes of Paris, Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade, Kenneth Cole, Lacoste, Lalique, Louis Vuitton, Movado, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sean John, Stuart Weitzman, Tiffany & Co., Gianni Versace, Versus by Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and much more. The Galleria has close to 400 stores and restaurants. Also the Galleria houses an ice skating rink year round. They have two hotels that make up to have 893 rooms total. The Galleria builds on to its mall every year. This mall is truly one of the best malls in the U.S. and the world. Also, there are many malls in the U.S. that are larger than the Galleria, so I dont think the mall in Dubai is the largest in the world. Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, but the mall can not compare to the Galleria. :)
Dubai_Boy June 21st, 2004, 09:11 AM Texasboy this is one of the largest malls outside of north america , not the world

Dubai-Lover August 9th, 2004, 03:46 PM the snowdome is about to be opened in june 2005
here's an article
http://www.dubaiphotomedia.com/Media/(Preview).jpg
Construction of the Middle East's first indoor ski resort at the Mall of the Emirates, continues to speed ahead at an unprecedented rate, with the project looking well on track to being ready to produce snow, as scheduled, by June 2005.
The project, which will feature over 6000 tonnes of snow at any given time when completed, will take its place in the history books as the third largest indoor snow dome in the world, boasting such features as a 400m ski run with a 62m vertical drop, a permanent quarter pipe for stunts and snowboarding, a range of multi-directional slopes with a number of slope gradients and the world's largest indoor snow play area.
With over one third of the slope already built, initial construction of the steelwork for the huge roof and installation of the chairlift already started, the snow dome is rapidly becoming one of Sheikh Zayed Road's most recognisable landmarks.
"Although there will be many reasons to visit Mall of the Emirates, the snow dome will be the key attraction, being the first of its kind in the region," says Peter Walichnowski, Chief Executive Officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments, "We have a team of 550 on site at any given time, working at optimum capacity.
The excellent progress made on the project so far is testament to their hard work and dedication."
Trances August 9th, 2004, 04:21 PM just out question where are the other snow domes ?

Construction of the Mall of the Emirates is well on track to meeting its target completion date of September 2005, exactly one year away. The first snow dome and indoor ski slope in the Middle East is now clearly visible from the Sheikh Zayed Road highway in Dubai, and preparations are already underway for production of the real snow which will be utilised within.

juiced September 26th, 2004, 07:51 PM When a first saw the slope as we drove past I thought the developers had done a complete cock up of the design and that the structure had fallen in  but later I realised it was the ski slope!
Dubai-Lover September 28th, 2004, 03:26 PM Mall of the Emirates announces official identity of snow park
A 400 metre long ski slope with varying terrain, a snow area the size of three football fields, over 6000 tons of real snow at any given time and a full capacity of 1500 guests – all features of the newly named Ski Dubai snow resort at Mall of the Emirates on Sheikh Zayed Road.
http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/6/8896-ski.jpg
Retail development leader Majid al Futtaim Investments today announced the official title of the snow park, Ski Dubai. It will be the world's first alpine-themed, all-inclusive indoor ski resort, third longest indoor slopes in the world and the first of its kind in the Middle East.
'Choosing a name for the snow park is an integral part of the brand development; our goal was to select a brand name which is simple, memorable and catchy while still capturing the essence of the resort,' says Peter Walichnowski, CEO, MAF Investments, 'The name, combined with the technological innovations being utilised, will position both Mall of the Emirates and Dubai firmly at the forefront of indoor winter sport facilities and snow playgrounds, in the Middle East and the world over.'
When complete, Ski Dubai will feature five different ski runs, a dedicated learners area, snowboard stunt park and quarter pipe, as well as a 3000 square metre snow play area, where many children from the region will be able to experience snow for the first time. Fresh snow will be made daily to offer ideal skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing conditions every day.
Construction on the Ski Dubai project continues on schedule and is on track for timely completion by September 2005, with snow production commencing in June.

i suppose still more fun to speed down mountains then doing this one
but that's easy to say for me, as i live 2 hours away from winter ski resorts

Krazy October 26th, 2004, 11:02 AM Work gathers speed on Mall of Emirates
Construction work on Dubai’s retail and leisure complex – Mall of the Emirates (MoE)– continues to move forward at an unprecedented rate, and the project looks well poised to be ready by the completion date of next September.
Progress on one of the complex’s key features, the first snow-dome and indoor ski slope in the Middle East, is steady and preparations have been under way to produce snow, which will be utilised at the massive slope, says Peter Walichnowski, chief executive officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments.
“Even now, the construction site illustrates the sheer scale of the project and the fact we are on schedule is testament to the commitment of the entire team,” he adds.
With over one-third of the slope already built, initial construction of the steelwork for the huge roof and installation of the chairlift has already started and the snow dome is rapidly becoming one of Sheikh Zayed Road’s most recognisable landmarks.
The project will feature over 6,000 tonnes of snow at any given time, and when completed will etch its name in the record books as the third largest indoor snow dome in the world.
“With a 400-m ski run, a 62-m vertical drop, a permanent quarter pipe for stunts and snowboarding, a range of multi-directional slopes having a number of slope gradients, the snow dome has the world’s largest indoor snow play area,” he says.
“The snow dome is unique in many ways as it is first indoor resort in the world with year-round snow,” he says.
It is the first indoor ski dome that has changing terrain, multiple direction slopes and varying slope gradients. Built on the Alpine resort theme, it is enclosed with tall glass partitions, in open view of restaurants and hotels and has a mountain lodge and mountain café terrace, state-of-the-art ticketing system, change areas, cafes, private party rooms and exclusive retail outlets. With a full capacity of 1,500 visitors, the dome offers facilities that include top-of-the-line ski equipment and clothing rental and qualified professional instructors.
The entire area has over 22,500 sq m of snow, a slope structure that is 85 m high and 80 m wide at its widest segment, has five ski runs from a beginner run to a 62 m vertical drop with longest run of 400 m, and a temperature that hovers around the -1 deg to -2 deg C mark.
“No doubt, the snow dome is the focal point for the visitors but the mall holds much more for those who would venture here,” says Walichnowski.
With over 350 shops and 2.4 million sq ft of prime retail and leisure space, the MoE is one of the biggest malls outside North America. Already 90 per cent of the Majid Al Futtaim’s flagship is leased out almost a year before its schedule opening. British retailer Harvey Nichols is among the big names to house its biggest store outside the UK. The 122,000 sq ft, three-level Harvey Nichols store will feature designer brand names that have become synonymous with the store in its nearly 200-year history and made it one of the best-known department stores in the world.
In addition to the new Harvey Nichols department store, the mall will also feature the region’s biggest Debenhams together with many of the world’s top brands from a range of retail sectors.
Major regional retailers including Broadway Trading, Al Shaya Group, Al Tayer Group and Landmark Group have already signed agreements with Majid Al Futtaim Group.
“This is a major success for the MoE and is a reflection of the popularity of the project amongst the international retail community,” says Walichnowski. “It is our retail partners that will ultimately bring success to our project and signs are already good that the new mall will be as successful as our existing shopping centres around the region.”
MoE will have an important role to play as the shopping, leisure and cultural centre for the community and will have several unique attractions that will make it a must-visit mall. It will also house the Dubai International Arts Centre and Community Theatre, a non-profit making project complete with a 500-seat purpose-built theatre.
This three-level centre which has themed precincts reflecting the cultural heritage of the region, forming streets, plazas and town squares, was initially announced under Suq Al Nakheel identity which was later changed into ‘MoE’ to reflect planned expansion with a 6.5 million sq ft gross leasable area of 2.4 million sq ft and parking space for 7,000 besides two international food-courts with 15 to 20 outlets, 15 to 20 licensed restaurants, around 12 impulse food outlets and two hotels attached to the facility offering a total of 860 rooms and suites.

Dubai-Lover November 1st, 2004, 08:19 AM Construction of Ductac on schedule
Dubai: Construction work on the Dubai Community Theatre & Art Centre (Ductac), the region's first modern, non-profit theatre, remains on schedule for opening in September 2005 at Mall of the Emirates.
The centre will occupy 12,000 square metres upon completion.
"We are at a stage in time where we are building history," said Peter Walichnowski, chief executive of Majid Al Futtaim Investments. "A development of such stature is the first creative community centre for all of Dubai."
The development includes a two-level theatre that accommodates over 500, a 150-seat studio, rehearsal spaces, along with art galleries, photography exhibitions, and photo classrooms and darkrooms.
It will also be home to an exclusive art centre as well as a music school.
It has been estimated that Dh15 million is required to complete the project.
Majid Al Futtaim Investments, a leading investor in the project, contributed approximately half of that amount in addition to the foundation at the Mall of the Emirates site.
An additional Dh8 million is also needed to fund the project's opening, operation costs and potential upgrades.
The Mall of the Emirates will include over 2.4 million square feet of shopping, leisure and entertainment space, including the region's largest Harvey Nichols department store, the largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai, a 14-screen multiplex cinema, and two hotels with over 900 rooms.
It will also incorporate Ski Dubai, the Middle East's first indoor ski resort.

Already, over 90% of the mall has already been leased, and upon completion, the complex, located on Sheikh Zayed road in Dubai, will include over 2.4 million square feet of prime shopping, leisure and entertainment space, positioning it as one of the largest malls outside North America. Work on the project has progressed significantly over the past couple of months with the signing of the largest Harvey Nichols department store in the region and the addition of the largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai, as well as a 24,000 square feet Virgin Megastore. 'This project has clearly developed into one of the most impressive mall projects in the world. We are very excited about what lies ahead,' stated Peter Walichnowski, Chief Executive Officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments. 'We are at a very crucial point in the development of the mall – the sheer scale of the project and the magnitude of the structures is phenomenal.'
With the recent naming of Ski Dubai, the region's first indoor ski resort, featuring one of the world's longest indoor ski slopes, the mall has taken on a new identity, positioned as a destination in itself within the region.
In less than a year, Mall of the Emirates, the most exciting retail and leisure complex in the Arab world and one of the biggest malls outside North America, will open to the public offering shopping, entertainment and skiing all in one place.

As construction on the largest retail and leisure complex in the Arab world continues to move forward, the Mall of the Emirates (MoE) seems to be well on track to meet the target completion date of September 2005.
Already 90 per cent of the MoE is leased and when complete, it will offer 2.4 million sq ft of prime shopping, leisure and entertainment space – making it the biggest mall outside North America.
Work on the project has progressed significantly during the past couple of months with the signing of the largest Harvey Nichols department store in the region and the addition of largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai. The complex would house Dubai Community Theatre and Art Centre, 14-screen multiplex cinemas, and two five-star hotels with a combined capacity of 900 rooms.
“We are at a crucial point in the development of the mall as the sheer scale of the project and the magnitude of the structure is phenomenal,” says Peter Walichnowski, CEO Majid Al Futtaim Investment.
The unfinished 300,000-sq-ft ski slope, the biggest indoor ski facility in the region, is rapidly shaping up and is now clearly visible from the Sheikh Zayed Road.
“We have separated the slope in various sections and it is large enough to accommodate the experts and beginner skiers and snow boarders in separate sections. Skiers will have easy access to the top of the slope through the chairlifts. Beyond doubt, this facility will be a destination in itself in the entire region,” says Ski Dubai general manager Younis Al Mulla.
With a gross built-up area of 6.5 million sq ft, this themed mall reflects the cultural heritage of the region through streets plazas and town squares incorporated within the mall architecture.
Work on the MoE started in October 2003 and the main contract was awarded to Khansaheb, while the snow resort contracts were awarded to Pomagalski.
Emirates Building System was awarded the contract for chairlifts and structural steel works. Bauer was selected for piling, while the snow dome piling was awarded to Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke.
Bauer Spezialtiefbau’s Dubai subsidiary, the principal contractor on two of the three foundation works packages, has constructed 2,500 piles measuring 600, 750 and 1,000 mm in diameter up to a depth of 20 m in sandstone.
Bauer heavy-duty rotary drilling rigs in various sizes including BG 9, BG 15 and two BG 25s were employed for the task, says a Bauer spokesman.

The largest in-door snow play area in the world, totalling 3,000 sq m, will provide a unique entertainment experience for all ages.

Ski Dubai, the world's first complete indoor mountain resort, will provide visitors to Mall of the Emirates with a total snow experience.
"Our aim is to provide an introduction to snow for all ages and all skill levels," said Ski Dubai chief executive Phil Taylor.

Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 8th, 2005, 10:56 PM The "ski park" at this mall looks like they've dismantled the old air-hanger ski slope in Tokyo and shipped it to Dubai, it's quite dull and un-original. I think this thing will tank once the one in DubaiLand is built... what would you rather ski, in a dimly-lit straight tube or on an artificial mountain that has twists and turns, all under a glass dome?
Trances April 9th, 2005, 02:12 AM i expect the glass dome will be far better and on a much larger scale
but you gotta start some where
Sunny Mountain is ages away
SA BOY April 9th, 2005, 01:19 PM it will be cool to do a bit of skiing after work on the way home.

The mega Mall of the Emirates, which will boast the region's first snow dome, is set to take shopping and entertainment to greater heights when it opens its doors this September.
Construction of the Mall of the Emirates (MoE) – among the most exciting retail and leisure complexes in the world – continues to move forward at an unprecedented rate and looks well on track to meet its target completion date of September 2005.
The Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Investments project, which occupies a distinct position in the area dubbed “New Dubai”, will house more than 400 shops and include 2.4 million sq ft of prime retail and leisure space, making it one of the biggest malls outside North America.
The mixed-use development will incorporate two hotels (one of which will be operated by Kempinski,) a two-level family entertainment centre, indoor ski resort and a 500-seat community theatre.
Main contractors include Bu Haleeba Al-Jaber Grinaker, working on the Kempinski hotel, Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke working on Ski Dubai, and Khansaheb Civil Engineering working on the mall itself and the second hotel.
Progress on one of the complex’s key features, Ski Dubai – the first snow dome and indoor ski resort in the Middle East – is clearly visible from the Sheikh Zayed Road and work is under way to install machinery for the generation of snow, which will be utilised within. The contractors have 5,000 men on site at any given time, working at optimum capacity. Due to its unique nature, the project has posed interesting design and construction challenges, in terms of the structural steelwork and superstructure required to create various ski experiences and build the “floating” upper section of the slope. Ski Dubai will feature one of the world’s longest indoor ski slopes and a play area where children and parents can have a true winter experience with real snow.
“This is one of the most ambitious mall projects in the world, certainly outside of North America,” says Peter Walichnowski, chief executive officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments. “Even now the construction site illustrates the sheer scale of the project and the fact we are on schedule is testament to the commitment of the entire team.”
Mall
The Mall of the Emirates will feature key retail brands including the region’s largest Harvey Nichols department store, the largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai, the region’s largest Debenhams, six large furniture retailers, a Virgin Megastore totalling 24,000 sq ft and a 14-screen multiplex cinema, together with two food-courts, 25 restaurants and food outlets and 350 retail stores.
The mall will house international brands such as Zara, Mango, Massimo Dutti, Baby Shop, Splash, Shoe Mart, Starbucks, Next, River Island, Laura Ashley, Dorothy Perkins, Mothercare and Promod, helping cement Dubai’s reputation as the shopping capital of the Middle East and strengthening its position as one of the leading shopping destinations in the world.
“It is our retail partners that will ultimately bring success to our project and signs are already positive that the new mall will be as successful as the existing shopping centres in the region,” continues Walichnowski. “However, while a strong mix or international brand names is a key ingredient, we know that there is a lot more to long-term success than shopping alone, which is why Mall of the Emirates is designed to provide the optimum mix of leisure and entertainment facilities, alongside its impressive line-up of shops.”
Entertainment features at the mall include an extensive family entertainment centre – Magic Planet – and the Dubai Community Theatre and Art Centre (believed to be the region’s first modern, non-profit theatre), which will feature a two-level theatre that accommodates over 500 individuals, a 150 flexible seat studio, rehearsal spaces, along with various art galleries, photography exhibitions, and photo classrooms and darkrooms, as well as a music school, offering courses in visual arts and music.
Offering a complete range of cultural performances and activities such as dance, drama, painting, photography and writing, the arts and theatre complex will occupy 3,000 sq m at the MoE.
“We are at a stage in time where we are building history. The Dubai Community Theatre and Art Centre offers activities for people of all ages and backgrounds,” says Walichnowski, “A development of such a stature is the first creative community centre for all of Dubai.”
Ski Dubai
Scheduled to open alongside the mall, Ski Dubai will provide visitors to Mall of the Emirates with a total snow experience. In addition to the world’s third longest indoor ski run, Ski Dubai’s Snow Park will offer features and activities that include tobogganing hills, twin-track bobsled racing and snowball shooting gallery, to name a few. The 3,000 sq m park will recreate an authentic mountain environment with frozen waterfalls, rocky outcrops, and tree formations. Top-of-the-line infrastructure will include quad chairlifts, button lifts, a state-of-the-art ticketing system and qualified professional instructors.
“Although there will be many reasons to visit the MoE, Ski Dubai will be the key attraction, being the first of its kind in the region,” says Walichnowski.
When complete, the resort will feature five different multidirectional ski runs with a number of slope gradients, a dedicated learner’s area, snowboard stunt park and quarter pipe.
“Ski Dubai will include a wonderland play area, where children from the region will be able to experience snow for the first time in the world’s largest indoor snow play area,” he says. “Fresh snow will be produced daily to offer ideal skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing conditions and temperatures within the Snow Park will be maintained at a comfortable -1 to -2 deg C.”
“The technology used to make the snow is the proven Acer Snowmec system which creates snow in flight through the air, the same way snow is formed in nature, feeling and tasting just like “wild snow,” he explains. “Liquid water is atomised to create a cloud inside the building, this cloud is then ‘seeded’ with tiny hard ice particles which nucleates the cloud from which snow crystals form and fall.”
Special design features create an insulated box around the slope and cool the snow on the slope from within, helping to make snow in the desert not just possible but economical and efficient,” he adds.
“Our aim is to provide an introduction to snow for all ages and all skill levels. The addition of the Snow Park area gives everyone, young and old, the opportunity to just play in real snow, partake in fun activities and enjoy the unique surroundings,” says Phil Taylor, chief executive of Ski Dubai. “The project will provide something for the snow enthusiast and for the less energetically inclined, Snow Park will have a large observation tower, offering a view of the entire resort, including the skiers and snowboarders on the slopes. At the mountainside cafes, visitors will be able to sit comfortably with family and friends and watch the action on the slopes. Ski Dubai will also feature private party rooms for those looking for a unique and memorable venue for their special occasions.
Hotels
At the bottom of Ski Dubai and linked directly to the West end of the mall is the 400-room five-star Kempinski hotel which, when it opens at the end of 2005, will offer visitors stunning views of the ski slopes as well as five-star dining and leisure facilities.
At the East end of the mall, a 500-room four-star hotel will open at the end of 2006.
Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Investments brings with it almost a decade’s experience in building, leasing and operating shopping malls in the Middle East. With more than 90 per cent of the floor space of the MoE already leased out, the developers anticipate a footfall of 32 million annually, which will bring it in the league of top performing centres in the world.
Dubai-Lover April 12th, 2005, 12:50 PM they still stick to their statement it'll be finished in september
i stick to my statement: NEVER!!!! if they really speed up they can finish the mall, but never ever the ski slope!
Mall of Emirates on schedule
Construction work on the Dubai's Mall of the Emirates is on schedule, according to a company statement. The mall features the region's first snow dome and indoor ski slope, which are now clearly visible from the highway, as well as the central atrium. A Kempinski Hotel also forms part of the development.
DUBAI April 12th, 2005, 02:11 PM its december!

Trances April 14th, 2005, 03:13 PM Dubai’s faux ski mountain will offer snow in 120
(AP) Khaleej Times Online 14 April 2005
DUBAI - When this city’s furnace-like summer gets too hot to bear, folks will cool off at a local resort with tumbling snowflakes, skiing and snowboarding on five trails, and, for those who need a break from the cold, mugs of hot chocolate by the fireplace.
The resort, a faux mountainside playground dubbed Ski Dubai, is currently a cacophony of blazing jackhammers, forests of steel scaffolding and an emerging gray mountain of concrete slabs.
Come September, a thick insulated roof with a sky-blue ceiling will seal in the site, with its 200-foot (62-meter) vertical drop and trails as long as 1,300 feet (400 meters).
Crank up the 23 massive air conditioners and turn on the snowmaking jets and organizers say the concrete mountain will be covered in 28 inches (70 centimeters) of powdery snow.
For those bundling up in parkas and strapping on their boots and gloves, the desert outside will melt away.
“There will be no windows looking to the outside,” said Phil Taylor, Ski Dubai’s chief executive, bounding up the concrete slopes and catwalks during a brisk tour of the construction. “The idea is to create a beautiful day in the mountains.”
For now, it requires imagination to envision.
“This is the black run here,” Taylor says, pointing to a terraced slope of concrete where a welder’s sparks tumble. “This is the ski patrol hut. There will be a quarter-pipe on that wall.”
When complete, company officials say Ski Dubai will be the third largest of the world’s almost four-dozen indoor ski resorts, and the only one in the desert or the Middle East. Two bigger indoor ski areas have opened in Holland and Germany.
Ski Dubai will comprise about a fifth of the floor plan of the giant $1 billion Emirates Mall, which developers say will briefly be the world’s third-largest and Dubai’s largest. Other larger malls are already in the works in this mushrooming city that will soon eclipse it.
On a typical day, Taylor says he expects 3,500 visitors paying 150 UAE dirhams (US$40) for a two-hour stint on the mountain, with 5,000 arriving on busy days.
But the concept is a leap of faith. Almost no one here can ski. Taylor estimates skiers make up as little as 5 percent of his target market. Few nationals have seen snow or experienced cold weather. Fewer still own skis or parkas. Ski Dubai will rent coats, gloves and hats along with boots and skis.
“We’ve got to create the future skiers of Dubai,” Taylor said.
It remains to be seen how a ski dome will fare in the United Arab Emirates, one of the globe’s hottest countries. In Tokyo, an even larger snow dome was demolished after it failed to attract enough skiers.
Taylor, who oversaw the construction of London’s popular Eye, a giant Ferris wheel, said he’s modeling Ski Dubai on a successful snow dome in Madrid, also based at a giant shopping mall.
He’s designed aspects of Ski Dubai to gently coax cold-averse nationals into the love of skiing and cold weather sports.
Engineers will keep the indoor temperature at a relatively balmy 30 F (one below zero C), far warmer than a blustery mountaintop in winter.
For those who want to start slowly, there are places to sled, toss snowballs or lurk in glacial caverns with ice sculptures and icicle stalactites.
For the rest, there are gentle slopes and a ski school that aspires to have half of its instructors speaking Arabic. Ski Dubai recruiters are already trying to poach coaches from ski resorts in Lebanon and Morocco, Taylor said.
In another aspect borrowed from the Madrid dome, Ski Dubai is being designed to simulate an Alpine resort, rather than the warehouse look of typical indoor ski areas.
There are Disney-esque frozen waterfalls, rope bridges and rocky outcrops, along with an “outdoor” observation deck and cafe near the summit, where hot-chocolate drinkers can relax at tables with a view over the “valley.”
To generate interest, the attached mall will place cafes at the base of the hill, with a two-story window separating patrons from the skiing. Also looking onto the lower end of the faux mountain will be the lobby and two floors of rooms at the forthcoming Kempinski Hotel.
The ceiling-mounted nozzles won’t be the only snow-generating apparatus. Snowmaking rooms will be placed on top of the mall, with workers flicking them out to float onto a play area in front of the mall windows.
Ski Dubai has another purpose: To lure shoppers to the Emirates Mall, which, although vast and glitzy, is just one shopping haven in a city where malls are part of the national culture.

AltinD April 15th, 2005, 11:51 AM ^ On rent I believe. Why someone have to buy winter closes at the ski slope when the shops just next door, within the mall sells them.
Check the thread on "Mall of the Emirates" on the "Dubai Projects" sections of the forum.
metroreporter April 15th, 2005, 09:16 PM Sounds good but I wonder about the quality of the snow. Has anyone ever been to an indoor park? I'm guessing whether the snow will be powder, slush, or packed (which is just a euphemism for hard-as-heck).
Dubai-Lover April 16th, 2005, 08:42 AM i think snow is one of their major concerns
i'm sure they will produce the best snow for skiing, otherwise it wouldn't make sense
dubaiflo April 16th, 2005, 06:05 PM warm clothes on sale...lol
i was in one indoor snow park, the snow was ok but not compareable to the alps... ;)
metroreporter April 17th, 2005, 12:52 AM Hopefully, it'll be good. Not as good as the Alps (sounds like heaven). But most of our snow here in SoCal is fake too (okay, it's real snow but artificially produced).
But I'm so clumsy at snowboarding, I'll pass up and head to the beach (hopefully Nakheel's next project will be a giant wave machine to toss up the gulf during the dead waved summers). Everyone press for wave machines!
DUBAI April 17th, 2005, 01:07 AM the article said you could RENT warm clothing!!!!
as for the waves, when i went don to Jumeriah open beach [JOB] in january it was really windy, and the waves had taken out half the beach!!!
there are still sandbags around the walkway and showers at the centre of the 'curve'.
metroreporter April 17th, 2005, 01:30 AM Okay, this is so random -- it's a blonde joke. You were talking about the wind and it sorta reminded me of this one funny joke I heard the other day.
There are three ladies: one's a brunette, one's a redhead, and one's a blonde.
They're all really criminal-ly. So they get caught in a foreign country where the death penalty involves being shot against a wall by thousands of soldiers.
So it's the brunette's turn. The army guy yells, one ... two ... and so the brunette yells: Tornado! Tornado! And chaos prevails and she escapes in the mess.
Now it's the redhead's turn. The army guy yells, one .. two .. and so the redhead yells: Earthquake! Earthquake! And havoc reigns and she escapes in the confusion.
Now it's the (you guessed it) blonde's turn! She's thinking about what to say like the other two. So the army guy yells, one ... two .. and the blonde yells out: Fire! Fire!
DUBAI April 17th, 2005, 01:37 AM better watch out or you will be deported to the SkyMajlis...
Like me!
muhauhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
dubaiflo April 17th, 2005, 11:03 AM d-l will get you ;) lol
but i can remember that there were huuge waves on jebel ali beach too in january...
AltinD April 17th, 2005, 11:27 AM Or you can "surf" on Wild Wadi Water Park. :D
dubaiflo April 17th, 2005, 11:38 AM but i guess it would be a little bit boring after a while ;)
metroreporter April 18th, 2005, 04:34 AM LOL! Yeah, I tried to "surf" in the wave pool on top of my tube. For some odd reason, they stopped the waves from nowhere (maybe some loser got too close to the machine wall) and I lost my balance, fell face first, scraped my knee until there was blood, blood, and more blood -- and it left a scar. I learned my lesson: Always listen to lifeguards when they say, "Please SIT all the way in your tube."
Krazy April 24th, 2005, 06:34 AM Skis the limit
23/04/2005
http://www.uaeinteract.com/news/article_pics/16054.jpg
This July snow will start to fall on a 22,500-square metre zone by the fourth interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road. By September, the world's largest snow park and third largest ski slope will be ready. So, hopes Ski Dubai, will be a public that may have never even seen snow before. It is this challenge of selling snow in the desert - as much as formidable feats of engineering - that preoccupies the team of Ski Dubai.
What is the best way to get the metropolis's myriad communities, as well as visitors from the GCC, hooked on the white stuff? In keeping with its city, Ski Dubai has a whopping snow dome to fill. Its 400-metre slope can simultaneously accommodate 1,500 skiers on five separate pistes. Sections at angles up to 30 degrees will cater for skiers of all abilities.
A 90-metre quarter-pipe and stunt park will provide the kicks for the snowboarders, expected to be a big slice of visitors. But as the Middle East's first snow facility, there must also be thrills for those who prefer to stick to level ground. The result is a snowdome that is a touch warmer than the others and a shedload plusher. While snow domes in chillier climes tend to cater to the hardcore skier with functional facilities, Ski Dubai has taken a very different path.
The aim is to recreate a mountain resort complete with blazing open fires, rustic stonework and a trompe l'oeil panorama of distant white-topped peaks. Après ski is laid on with a snowplough - a café next to the slope and two levels of restaurants overlooking the wintry scene from within the themed cosiness of the Kempinski Hotel.
For initial exploratory steps in snow culture, there is a play area with opportunities for tobogganing, snowman construction and, one assumes, snowball fights Nestled under the hill itself is a complex of ice caverns and hospitality rooms. All these, however, are parts of a plan to get local residents more deeply hooked on the white stuff.
Ski Dubai also hopes to encourage first-time skiers by having the price of admission include equipment hire. Expert instructors and gentle pistes for leaners will occupy the lower sections of the slope. Also, as anyone not just setting foot at Dubai airport should know, Ski Dubai will be part of the Arab world's largest shopping mall.
The Mall of the Emirates will consist of 2.4 million square feet of shopping, leisure and entertainment space with 14 cinema screens, a theatre, two hotels and several hundred shops. To convert its visitors from retail to recreation, a special machine by the window to the mall will create regular snowfalls.
Otherwise, Ski Dubai's 600 tons of snow will be replenished overnight by a fine water spray from the edges of the ceiling. "Doing this requires a temperature of -60C quite nippy even by the standards of Dubai air-conditioning - but during the day we can keep the air at a more moderate -10C because we use an under floor cooling system. Every day we will create 30 tons of snow." The slope's technological wizardry also includes cunning energy-cutting strategies.
As snow melts it collects in pits through which run the air-conditioning ducts of the surrounding Mall of the Emirates. A big insulating space also separates the concrete roof from the pale blue faux-sky ceiling. But the real impressive bit for engineers can already be seen by passing motorists on Sheikh Zayed Road. Anyone who glances at the ramp rising like a launch pad in Al Barsha will have noticed that it has a kink.
New York Yankee April 24th, 2005, 11:58 AM great idea, a snow dome in a country like UAE!!!

Dubai
Construction of the Middle East's first indoor ski resort at the Mall of the Emirates, a Majid Al Futtaim Investments project, saw a major milestone with the final section of the ski slope raised into place.
Utilising a technique known as 'strandjacking', a section of the slope, weighing 3,000 tonnes (the equivalent of 500 elephants), was lifted 30 m into the air and connected to the main framework of the ski hill structure. The completion of this phase signals a significant landmark in the construction process of the Mall of the Emirates project, which continues on track for opening on September 3, 2005.
The raising of the slope, which was completed over two days, creates space for another 3,000 car park spaces and signals a shift into the final phase of the construction of the project. This phase will focus on internal finishes and retailer shop construction, with several retailers already on-site and many more expected over the coming weeks.
"This is a critical milestone in the Mall of the Emirates project and the finish line is now in sight," commented Jeff Rossely, group vice president, development, MAFI. "It is a very significant feat of engineering in a scheme that pushes the boundaries of mall design in so many ways. I would like to pay tribute to all involved, especially our specialist contractors, Al Naboodah Laing O'Rourke and Eversendai."
"The sheer scale of the project and the magnitude of the structure is now visible to everyone passing the Mall of the Emirates at Interchange 4 on Sheikh Zayed Road," says Phil Taylor, chief executive, Ski Dubai. "The smooth and successful completion of this major stage of construction is testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team."
When complete, Ski Dubai will hold over 6,000 tonnes of snow at any given time and will take its place in the history books as the third largest indoor snow dome in the world, boasting such features as a 400 m ski run, a permanent 3.5 m radius quarter pipe for stunts, a snowboarding park, 5 multi-directional slopes with varying slope gradients, including a black run, and the world's largest indoor snow play area.
Ski Dubai is a component of the Mall of the Emirates, the flagship project of the Majid Al Futtaim Group. Along with Ski Dubai, the project is being promoted as a retail resort and will feature over 425 stores, 65 restaurants, a 14-screen Cinestar cinema, the region's largest Magic Planet Entertainment area, the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre, a Kempinski hotel and the largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai.

At a breakfast meeting held at the site on May 3rd, Jeff Rossely, Group Vice President, Property Development addressed a group of nearly 200 retailers who have signed leases for locations in specific zones of the project. The presentation on the progress of the centre was highlighted by the announcement that 234 retail units located in the zones are ready for retail fitout, which is 30-60 days ahead of the originally scheduled handover date.
Commenting on the event Mr Rossely said, 'We have achieved a goal that is unprecedented in this market. By handing over almost 50% of the retail space ahead of schedule we have passed the baton to our retail partners to accelerate their shop designs as we approach the opening of the centre on September 3rd. We are proud of the progress of our project team, particularly the contractors and consultants. This is a landmark project and we have a team of designers and co-ordinators working under the direction of Waleed Sleiman, our Manager of Tenant Projects ready to work with our retailers to deliver exciting store concepts.'
A brief tour of the centre highlighting the progress on the project including the condition of the retail units and the impressive central galleria with a height of almost 40 metres concluded the breakfast meeting. A number of the larger retailers are already on-site and have commenced the construction of their stores. These include Carrefour, Debenhams, Centrepoint, Home Centre, Cinestar and Magic Planet.
Ashley Eide, Senior Retail Manager at the Rivoli Group said 'I was very impressed by the progress on the project. The early handover of our retail units will allow us plenty of time to complete the design and construction by the opening day in September. We are definitely excited to be a part of this project as we believe it will set a new standard in the region.'
The Mall of the Emirates is the flagship project of the Majid Al Futtaim Group. Along with Ski Dubai, one of the largest indoor ski facilities in the world the project will feature over 425 stores, 65 restaurants, a 14 screen Cinestar cinema, the regions largest Magic Planet Entertainment area, community theatre and arts centre, a Kempinski Hotel along with the largest Carrefour hypermarket in Dubai. Planned to open on September 3, 2005 this landmark project will re-define the retail and leisure experience both in the middle-east and worldwide.

Dubai-Lover June 1st, 2005, 01:16 PM MoE Skidome crosses significant milestone
Dubai
Construction of the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort – the Skidome – crossed a major milestone with the raising of the final section of the ski slope into place.
The Majid Al Futtaim Investments (Mafi) project, which is part of the Mall of Emirates (MoE), achieved the task using a technique known as ‘strandjacking’, whereby a section of the slope, weighing 3,000 tonnes, was lifted 30 m into the air and connected to the main framework of the ski hill structure.

That one doesnt has that Ski Hill..
Krazy June 5th, 2005, 07:41 PM Nope, that's Dubai Mall. This is Mall of the Emirates, largest mall outside North America on completion. Dubai Mall - largest mall in the world on completion.
malec June 5th, 2005, 07:47 PM BTW offtopic but I heard about these chinese malls in the planning that are to be something like 7 or 8m sq feet. Aswell how big is the expansion on the mall of america and would the dubai mall still beat it?
Sharky June 6th, 2005, 04:34 AM Dubai Mall: about 5.6 million sqf
Mall of America after expansion: about 8 milion sqf (currently 4.2 m sqf)
South China Mall (north of Hongkong): 6.5 million sqf on completion (next year)
Mall of Arabia (dubai): 10 million sqf on completion
Dubai Mall will never have a chance to claim the title world's largest mall - not even for a day- because SChinaMall will be bigger and finished long before dubai mall is.
But there is still the mall of arabia which will eventually claim this title.
Dubai-Lover June 11th, 2005, 05:05 PM Mall of the Emirates speeds towards a September finish
Since late 2003, the Mall of the Emirates has been one of the most visible construction sites in Dubai.
Mall of the Emirates speeds towards a September finish
It is now just three short months until the Mall of the Emirates opens to the public on 3rd September. With the structural work now largely complete, Construction Week caught up with the development team to find out about the ski slope that everyone is talking about.
Since construction work began on site in late 2003, the Mall of the Emirates has been one of the most visible construction sites in Dubai.
Work on the mall is now closing in on its 3rd September opening date.
For the mall’s indoor ski slope, the bulk of the construction work is now complete.
According to Richard A. Haddon, senior project manager at Majid Al Futtaim, good progress is being made on the cantilever section protruding out from the slope that accommodates the bull wheel for the chair lift, which has allowed the contractor, Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke, to focus on completing the car park underneath the ski hill.
With construction work coming to a finish, the next concern facing the project’s developers is commissioning.
A new sub station that will provide power to the mall has now been completed behind the centre, and will be connected up to the mall early this month.
This will allow the services within the mall, such as the air conditioning, to begin operating on a zone-by-zone basis.
Commissioning for the region’s first indoor ski slope will be slightly more complex.
“Because of the criticality of the snow-making apparatus, temporary power was arranged to bring the temperature within the ski slope down before the mains power is connected,” says Haddon.
Prior to the first snow making date of 31st July, there will be a two-week period during which the temperature within the structure will be dropped progressively lower. Once operational, the normal temperature will be -1.5oC, and -6oC when making snow, although the refrigeration technology that has been installed is capable of bringing the temperature down as far as -15oC.
“As far as energy consumption is concerned, it’s not as bad as you would think,” says Haddon. “The biggest energy drain is the initial effort of bringing the temperature down. It’s like a refrigerator — a lot electricity is required to bring the temperature down, but once it has stabilised then the energy consumption is not that great,” he adds.
To reduce cooling bills and enhance the efficiency of the slope, there is an air lock connecting the slope to the mall, and an energy recycling system so that energy is not simply expelled and wasted.
The snow itself sits on a ribbed sheet, through which runs a series of refrigeration pipes to ensure that the snow does not melt. Below the sheet is 250 mm of insulation on top of a waterproofed concrete deck.
Once the commissioning is completed, the only work remaining will be for the specialist contractors working on the
refrigeration, electrical and lighting systems.
The warm side of the ski slope will be partitioned off from the cold side by large sections of glazing. These will allow visitors to the mall to see into the slope, while at the same time prevent dust and heat from entering the slope itself.
The mall’s contractor, Khan-saheb, completed most of the structural work some time ago, and work on the specialist finishes and services are now well advanced. This allowed much of the retail space to be handed over to the respective retailers. In fact, many tenants were able to start work on site some 60 days ahead of schedule.
The handover of the anchor stores was the first priority, and all were made available to their tenants in accordance with both the lease requirements and the construction programme.
With a total of 234 retail units, co-ordinating the retailers is a major challenge as each has their own contractors working for them.
“On a job of this size, the logistics of tenant management is always very challenging. One way we have got around that
is by having a very detailed logistics plan.
“This is backed up by in excess of 30 tenant co-ordinators,” explains Andrew J. Keegan, project director - Mall of the Emirates, Majid Al Futtaim Investments.
Although the mall may be ready for tenants to begin work on their stores, there is often the perception amongst them that it is not ready, which can cause unnecessary delays.
The developers had organised site visits and conferences to convince tenants that the mall is ready for them to start work, but nothing inspires action like the sight of other tenants busily fitting out their stores.
“A number of tenants have already started work, including Carrefour, which gives a great deal of confidence to the other tenants,” says Keegan.
With this added confidence boost, the developer now expects that the retailers will rapidly accelerate the pace of work on their stores.
“Tenants now realise that if they don’t fit out on time, they will miss out on those important initial sales when the mall will generate a lot of public interest,” says Haddon.
dubaiflo June 11th, 2005, 05:50 PM maybe they will increase the size of dubai mall, but i doubt it.
a pity actually...! but there is still MoA , arabia, not america.
scorpion June 12th, 2005, 01:37 AM “Because of the criticality of the snow-making apparatus, temporary power was arranged to bring the temperature within the ski slope down before the mains power is connected,” says Haddon.
any coincidence with the recent power blackout in D~~???
dubaiflo June 12th, 2005, 04:16 PM no idea.
but i hope theyve got some good aggregates to keep the temperature low if another blackout happens after the ski slope has been opened.

Dubai-Lover July 23rd, 2005, 07:53 AM Ski Dubai on track for September opening
By Nina Muslim, Staff Reporter
Dubai :
Ski Dubai, the emirate's latest landmark and the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East, is on track for a September opening despite some material shortages, said officials in charge of the project.
"When you build something this big, you encounter challenges that you either expected or didn't expect," said Phil Taylor, Ski Dubai's chief executive.
"For example, now there is a shortage of high-quality glass," he added.
However, he said the ski resort was not badly affected as they managed to solve the problem by outsourcing the material from outside Dubai.
"We also ordered the glass six to 12 months ago," Taylor said. He said the problem probably stem-med from a strong demand for glass due to the number of construction projects going on in Dubai.
Taylor said other "challenges" the Ski Dubai is working to overcome includes slow progress on the construction of the outer wall.
There are about 1,300 labourers currently working to build the mammoth 25-storey ski resort in the desert.
Susan Mikloska, Ski Dubai's head of marketing, said the resort will be open for business in September, but not on September 3, the opening date for the adjoining Mall of the Emirates.
She said the resort is scheduled to open on September 28, depending on snow conditions.
"The building will be finished but the opening depends on the amount of snow. If we have enough the day before, we open that day, if not the next day," she told Gulf News.
She added the resort will "definitely" be operational by September 30.
Taylor said the next phase of the project, the laying of the snow, will begin next month.
Ski Dubai will have 6,000 tonnes of real snow, making the snow 50cm deep. The previous key phase in the project, the raising of the final section of the 400-metre ski slope, finished in May.
The 25-storey structure is the third-largest indoor ski resort in the world and the Middle East's first. Construction began two years ago.

The FAQs under "Experience It All" have this Q/A
----
Q: So I pay for 2 hours session do I have to keep track of the time myself? What if I would like to stay longer?
A: Yes, you need to keep an eye on the clock. After the time on your key card expires you will not have access to the lifts. If you would like to stay longer, it is possible to extend your time for a small additional charge. Please see the pricing information on the website for more information.

Dubai
It will snow in Dubai this winter. Come September, the world's largest and the Middle East's first ski slope, the Dubai Ski at the Mall of the Emirates, the biggest mall outside the US, will be ready for ski-off.
The 25-storey high (90 metres) ski slope, which has already added an imposing silhouette to Dubai's skyline, is 400 metres long from start to finish, occupying an area equal to three football stadiums, is 85 metres wide, and will allow over 1,500 skiers to enjoy the sport simultaneously, said Younis H Al Mulla, general Manager of the Mall of the Emirates, according to a report in the Khaleej Times.
"The skiers can use the ski lift (chair) to travel to the top of the slope, and enjoy a cup of coffee at the mid-station coffee shop. There's a snow-board park for the youngsters, while for the children, there's a 3,000 sq m snow-land play area as well as ice caves where they can play with snow," he said, adding that the ski slope will offer downhill runs for both skiers and snowboarders, for beginners, amateurs as well as experts.
The five-run ski slope is part of a massive high-tech snow dome, which will be replenished with fresh snow every night. "It would take some 6,000 tonnes of snow to fill up the dome floor up to three feet, and every night 30 tonnes of snow will be produced to replenish the facility," Al Mulla added.
Dubai Ski has an edge over similar facilities around the world. According to Al Mulla, the temperature inside the dome will be one degree below zero as against the universal 10 below zero at other such facilities.
"Skiers can enjoy the place for as long as they want without getting a head-ache due to cold or experiencing problems related to low temperatures. This has been made possible because of a state-of-the-art technique which uses a network of pipes laid under the snow to keep it fresh without affecting a major drop in temperature," he said, adding that at night, after the dome is closed to the public, the temperature would be brought down to seven below zero. The 223,000 sq m mall is estimated to have cost $1 billion.
