Excellent start for the Kollam Techno Park thread. The Kollam Techno Park is expected to attract more business due to proximity of Techno Park (70 Kms) and the upcoming Techno City near to Pallipuram (60 KMs). Moreover the park will the most picturesque one as the location is an excellent site which is calm, serene and enchanting.
Some nice and attractive building suiting the natural scenes there will make the park more picturesque.
Also, there are many industries owned by the government in Kundara which are not functioning properly like the Starch, Alind etc. Government can even think of integrating these land with the Techno Park at Kundara so that the expansion plans of the park will be relatively easier in future. Alind has huge area (more than 100 acres) under their custody.

Yes... the land prices have shot up in Kundara town area. Already builders are planning villa projects nearby due to the potential of this area.
Kollam Techno Park @ Kundara is located at a calm and quiet place almost 15 Kms away from the city and 3 KMs away from the heart of Kundara town.
It is truly the revival of Kundara as a major industrial town.

The location where the Kollam Techno Park comes up is near to the industrial belt of Kundara. KEL, Alind, Starch and ofcourse Cyramics are very near to the site. If planned with a futuristic vision, the excess and unused land of these companies can be utilized for the expansion of Kollam Techno Park. Kundara is very well connected to Kollam city and the adjoining major towns like Kottarakkara and Punalur with good roads and railway line.
Moreover, the upcoming NH 220 will pass very near to the Kollam Techno Park.

Kundara was once a major industrial town like Aluva which had Alind, KEL, Cyramics, Starch and a lot of other small companies. The protests and unions devastated these companies and Kundara is a graveyard of these big companies. GOK has lot of land under their control between these companies which are located very closeby. These companies are just a few Kms away from the centre of Kundara town and at an average of 15 Kms away from Kollam city.
With the emergence of the Kollam IT park at the Cyramics site in 42 acres, Kundara is rising up to join the IT bandwagon.

Reghu July 15th, 2009, 07:38 PM Kundara town should be given a face lift as it is gearing up for the inaugration of the Kollam Techno Park by this time next year.
The roads in the town should be widened especially the ones from the park to the NH-208 and to the proposed NH-220 stretch that passess through Kundara.
After, the inaugration of the Kollam - Punalur BG conversion next year, the town will be choked with traffic and this may affect the traffic towards the IT park as well as the route towards the park has to cross Elampaloor or Mukkada junction both have railway level crosses. There should be flyovers at both these locations as both these junctions are the most busiest in the town. Moreover, there should be enough bus services from Kollam city to the park site. A substation for the Techno Park is also required.

Eventhough it is an extension at the start, the park's futuristic design and look and the picturesque scenes give it a unique place in the IT parks of Kerala. Kundara definitely has an edge over the other places where IT parks are coming up like Koratty, Ambalapuzha or Cherthala as Kundara is an industrial belt since the British regime itself and the people and the ambience are very much industry friendly as well. ^^

The Water Terminal will be a unique concept for IT park. I do not think any other IT park will have this facility as Ashtamudi lake provides this natural infrastructure. The inland waterway route to the IT Park will ease the traffic snags of the techies as they can reach directly to the IT park from different locations in the city through passenger cruisers.
Already, boat terminals are coming up at different locations in the Ashtamudi lake banks in the city and the district. This will allow the local techies to access the park through waterways. Ambalapuzha park can also think about the same concept.
The Kottiyam - Kundara IT Park road development is very important for IT park and Kundara as well. This road will give shorter distace and travel time to Trivandrum Airport, Trivandrum Techno Park and Techno City at Pallipuram. Through this road from Kollam Techno Park one can reach the Techno City near Pallupuram within 45 - 50 minutes. Moreover, this road can become an outer ring road for Kollam City if the road from Park is extended to reach somewhere near Chavara.

A great news for Kundara Industrial region which has become a graveyard of so many industires over the years. Kundara is still recovering from the collapse of its heavy industries.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keeping in line with the efforts at building a technology park in the Kollam district of Kerala, the Technopark Project Implementation Board of Technopark has approved the master plan for the development of the proposed Kollam IT Park.
The Kollam IT Park, to come up in Kundara, is a project under the 'Hub and Spoke' model of development strategy of IT department and the Government of Kerala. The strategy is aimed at the promotion of IT and ITeS industry in the state.
The IT Park will soon be notified as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Tendering for infrastructure development works like 110 KV substation, internal roads, water supply scheme, etc are in progress. A modern sewage treatment plant is also part of the master plan.
According to Ajay Kumar, Secretary (IT), Government of Kerala, who is also chairman of the Technopark Board, "the conceptual design for a modern IT building, measuring half a million square feet of built-up space incorporating the green building concept has already been approved by the Board."
The proposed IT building has a futuristic design marking a clear distinction from the conventional construction, he added.
Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark said the first phase of this building with a built-up space of one lakh sqft is expected to be ready for occupation by August, 2010.
Elaborating on the master plan, Alexander added, "The iconic structure will be located at the top most point in the campus from where one will capture an enchanting view of the Ashtamudi Lake with its vast expanse of pristine waters."
Developed plots of varying extents will be offered on lease basis to interested co-developers. When completed the IT Park will have offer direct employment to about 8000 IT professionals.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan had in February launched the Kollam IT park project. The state government has already allotted a 40-acre plot at Kundara along the banks of Ashtamudi lake.
"Setting up of a modern IT Park with world-class infrastructure facilities is expected to act as a rejuvenating shot in the arm for Kundara, once known for its major industrial activities," an official said.

Emerging_Quilon August 17th, 2009, 07:52 AM New Delhi, Aug 16 Kerala will set up about 100 IT zones, Techno-Lodges, over the next five years to attract more IT companies to the state and would invest about Rs 20-25 crore in the project.
The techno-lodges, to be set up on the lines of IT parks, will be small in size and cater to small IT firms.
"We plan to have 100&aposTechno-Lodges&aposover the next five years, offering 30-60 per cent cheaper rentals. These zones would be apt for companies looking at 50-500 seater centres," Kerala IT Secretary Ajay Sharma told PTI.
The funding of the project would depend on the location of the project, which would be set up in small cities of the state, he added.
" Though we are looking at the public-private partnership model for investing in the project, the government could invest about Rs 20-25 crore,"he added.
The government is targetting BPO firms, entrepreneurs and training institutions for setting up base in these lodges.
Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL) will be the main governing body for the scheme.
Though the companies setting up base in these zones would not get tax holidays of any sort, they would, however, be given power at lower tariffs.
The government has set up two such zones in Kollam District, which would be inaugurated in November, while two more centres are expected to come up by the middle of 2010, he added. PTI SR ANA
Emerging_Quilon August 17th, 2009, 02:44 PM According to the Kerala Government, the IT Park proposed at Kollam will soon be notified as a special economic zone. The master plan for development of the Kollam IT park has been approved by the project implementation board of Technopark.
It is one of the parks being developed as part of the IT department’s strategy to broad base for the IT/ITES sectors in the state on a hub-and-spokes model.
For the park at Kundara, the state government has allotted a 40-acre and tendering for infrastructure development works for the project are under way.
The project implementation board of Technopark has approved the master plan for the development of an IT Park at Kollam in Kerala. Following the hub-and-spoke model of the development strategy of the IT department and the Kerala government for the promotion of the IT and ITeS industry, Technopark will develop three hubs, with Kollam being the first of its kind.
V S Achuthanandan, chief minister of Kerala, has launched the project in February 2009. The state government has already allotted 40 acre at Kundara near Kollam, along the banks of Ashtamudi lake.
The park will soon be notified as a special economic zone (SEZ). Tendering for the infrastructure development works like 110 KV substation, internal roads and water supply scheme are in progress. A modern sewage treatment plant is also part of the master plan.
Mervin Alexander, chief executive of Technopark, said Phase-I of the park, with a built-up area of 100,000 sft, was expected to be ready by August 2010.
According to the state IT secretary, the conceptual design for a modern IT building, measuring 5 lakh sq ft of built-up space incorporating the green building concept had already been approved by the project implementation board.
Apart from this, developed plots of varying extents will be offered on a lease basis to interested co-developers. When completed, the IT park will have a direct employment potential of about 8,000 IT professionals.
The state Public Works Department has already initiated action to widen and develop the existing road leading to the IT Park from NH 47 at Kottiyam. The Inland Water Navigation Department has also drawn up a plan to provide facilities to promote water transport to the Park, which is expected to ease the traffic pressure on the highway. Technopark authorities have already approved the proposal for a boat jetty designed in line with the traditional Kerala architecture.

Reghu September 7th, 2009, 05:22 AM South to see rural BPO revolution
State governments seen encouraging outsourcing centres in villages
BPOs have been set up in Perinad and Kadakkal villages of Kollam district
Inaugration of the Kollam BPOs called Techno Lodges in November 2009
When BPO revolution started in India in the late 90’s, not many people had thought that rural India, which lacks even basic amenities like drinking water, road connectivity and electricity will ever be able to handle outsourced backoffice work. But almost a decade since then, the state governments, especially in Southern India, are being seen aggressively promoting rural BPO concept not just as an employment generation scheme, but as a mean to groom the BPO ecosystem.
Governments in all the southern states have either launched various schemes or are in the process of developing models to encourage private players to set up BPO centres in rural areas. All these states are talking about creating huge employment opportunities for socially backward classes, school and college drop-outs and graduates who have lack of job opportunities in their areas.
“Rural BPO concept might not be new in the Indian context where a few of these are running successfully with the support of large corporates and NGOs. But what we are trying to do is to create opportunities for youths who are 10th standard dropouts or above, by providing them respectable employment opportunities in their areas, the lack of which often forces them to join criminal and naxalite outfits,” says Santosh Babu, MD of Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), the IT arm of government of Tamil Nadu. “If we can provide urban opportunities in rural areas, it would be a win-win situation for all,” he adds.
Tamil Nadu is perhaps the first state in the country to start a rural BPO centre in early 2006 in Krishnagiri district, under the patronage of the state government. While two of them are currently functional under the brand name of FOSTeRA at Krishnagiri and naxal-infested Uthangarai areas in the state, three more are in the process of getting operational. The Tamil Nadu government has announced to set up 100 rural BPOs in the state, as part of which the government is soon going to come out with a business model.
“We are not looking at providing the interested parties any financial incentives, but coming out with a commercial model for the continuity of business. As the part of the model, we will have a Board of directors at the appex level, who will be assisted by a CEO and the other team members. They will oversee the all the rural BPOs in the state,” added Babu.
Karnataka government has recently announced a rural BPO (R-BPO) scheme as part of which the government is providing various financial benefits such as capital expenditure incentives up to Rs 20 lakhs and per employee training incentive of Rs 10,000. In fiscal 2008-09, the state had earmarked Rs 5 crore for this purpose. In the first year, out of the nine companies and entrepreneurs who had shown interest, four were given approval.
The first govt-promoted rural BPO has recently started operations in Srirangapatnam near Mysore while the other three are in the process of getting operational in Salgame (Hassan), Shiggaon (Haveri) and Gundlupet (Chamrajnagar).
In the current year, the state government, according to the state IT secretary Ashok Kumar Manoli, has received 124 applicants, “with companies like Infosys and Wipro showing interest to set up rural BPOs”.
In order to select the genuine aspirants, the state government has set up a six-member screening committee with three members from the government and three from the industry. The committee to be headed by Aravind Jannu, MD of Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation (KEONICS), has members including Sridhar Mitta, MD of e4e Labs and S Nagarajan, co-founder of 24/7 Customer.
Kerala, on the other hand, is going for a ‘hub and spoke’ model as a part of which the government aims to set up about 100 rural BPOs at panchayat and district level in all the 14 districts of the state, in the next three years. Under a scheme known as ‘Techno Lodge’, the state-owned Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited is setting up facilities in the rural areas which are being given on lease to private parties. The government is also providing lands to interested private parties to establish offices and give it on lease to companies intending to set up low cost BPO centres. The first two of the rural BPOs under this scheme have been set up in Perinad and Kadakkal villages of Kerala’s Kollam district, and would be officially inaugurated in November this year, Ajay Kumar, IT secretary, government of Kerala said.
“We expect that when complete, our low cost BPO scheme will generate employment opportunities for about 10,000 people. We intend to have such BPOs at the panchayat and taluk level in every district which will be headed by the district collectors,” Kumar added.
Industry sources say other than creating employment opportunities for rural youths, the rural BPO initiatives would also encourage bigger players to move a chunk of their outsourcing works to these lows cost operations, either to their own centres or to their partners. “Even though we don’t want to set up rural BPOs, we are interested to work with companies who have a base in rural areas in Karnataka. We can bring them business continuity,” said Amitabh Chaudhry, CEO of Infosys BPO.
Says Sabyasachi Satpathy, Partner at Tholons Advisory, “Rural BPO can provide an alternate business model for the opening up of the domestic BPO opportunities. By leveraging the low operations and people cost as well as significantly lower employee attrition, Indian service providers can significantly reduce cost by moving non-complex support operations from large cities to their rural operations.”
Emerging_Quilon September 9th, 2009, 07:44 AM Kerala to take IT deeper into rural areas
Setting up 200 small-level IT parks across various districts
Each IT Park would provided jobs for 50 to 100 people
The small level IT parks in Kollam are coming up at Perinad and Kadackal
In line with the Kerala government's plan to provide a boost to the IT scenario and also decentralize the IT infrastructure in the state, the state administration would set up as many as 200 small-level information technology parks across various districts.
The new small-level parks are to be designed in such a way that as many as 50 to 100 people would get jobs in each IT park. Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, who also holds the IT portfolio, said the first of such small-level IT parks will come up at in a couple of smaller towns in Kollam district in November.
Pointing out that the small IT parks would help extend the development of the IT sector to rural areas, he added that the government is also committed to set up IT parks at Koratty in Thrissur district, Eramam in Kannur and Cheemeni in Kasaragod.
Adding that the government had provided the needed support to IT companies in Kerala to help them buck the recessionary trend, the Chief Minister said the growth rate of software exports from Kerala touched 45 per cent during the slowdown period. This is against a national rate of 15 per cent, he added. He revealed that IT exports from Kerala leaped five-fold over the last three years.
V S Achuthanandan, who was speaking after inaugurating a 110-KV power substation on the Technopark campus at Kazhakkuttom here, said the North Kerala region will also be catapulted to the IT scene with the new Cyberpark fast coming up at Kozhikode. Meanwhile, down south, the Technocity project in Thiruvananthapuram, and the next phase of development of Technopark will generate 2,00,000 jobs, he added.
According to Ajaykumar, Kerala's Secretary for IT, the work environment in Kerala currently offers growth opportunity for both employers and employees. He said the government will "make an effort to seamlessly keep business operating round the clock by providing robust infrastructure and connectivity. The new substation is a step in that direction."
Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander, who spoke at the event, said that the new power substation now on stream would help the ongoing Phase III development of Technopark gain added momentum.
"Being implemented as an IT-ITeS Special Economic Zone on 92 acres of land, the new development will make Technopark Asia's biggest IT hub with a total 10 million sq ft and a 1, 00,000 strong workforce," Alexander added.
Emerging_Quilon September 11th, 2009, 11:48 AM Hub-and-spoke IT model timely
IT businesses looking to set up shop outside metros: Chief Secretary
State investment of Rs.2,000 crore envisaged
Six towns including Kundara (Kollam) chosen for IT development
About one-sixth of all information technology (IT) business proposals coming to tier-I and -II cities in the country will now be accounted for by Kerala as the industry begins to look outside the metros to expand and consolidate, Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan has said.
This dovetails with the State government policy that embraces the hub-and-spoke model for IT development, she said while delivering the keynote address at a conference, “IT in Kerala — challenges and opportunities,” organised by the Kerala State office of the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Thursday.
She said a vision document prepared by the State government for the IT sector envisaged creation of two lakh job opportunities and a direct investment of Rs.2,000 crore by the State government.
Another major initiative would be in e-governance, for which Rs.2,000 crore would be set apart in Plan investments over the next few years. Opportunities for the private-public partnership (PPP) mode of development would be explored with renewed vigour.
She said the private sector alone was expected to commit investments ranging from Rs.8,000-10,000 crore in the next five years. This would have a huge multiplier effect on the economic development of the State.
While pointing out that the government had already set up an IT infrastructure development company, the Chief Secretary said the ‘IT hub trio’ of Technopark, Infopark and Cyberpark would provide sufficient space for companies to invest in. Six smaller towns had been chosen for focussed development as ‘spokes’ and at least 1,000 more acres of land were to be added to the basic park facilities.
The larger policy vision sought to take IT to the villages, which was evidenced in the proposal to start 200 small IT parks in different parts of the State.
IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said the State government’s move to shift focus to tier-I and -II cities had not come a day too soon what with multinational companies (MNCs) increasingly looking outside of metros to commit investments.
IT began to happen big in India from the late 90’s even as the country as a whole was just being discovered by MNC investors. So there was no way that tier-I and -II cities would have appealed to them at all at that time.
He said the government has instituted scholarships of Rs.8,000 a month for students pursuing postgraduate education in IT. This was open for local students and those from outside studying in an institution based in the State. Ph.D. students were also given scholarships.
A major initiative in this context would be the setting up of an ICT (information and communication technology) academy that aimed to hone the skills of college-level students.

Emerging_Quilon September 21st, 2009, 07:13 AM IT parks coming to the villages
State to establish ‘Techno Lodges’ in 200 panchayats in five years
First two Techno Lodges to come up at Kadakkal and Perinad in Kollam district
To widen IT infrastructure in Kerala and extend it to the grassroots, the government has taken up a project to establish a network of small IT parks in small towns and villages.
Named Techno Lodge, the rural IT centre will have basic infrastructure to meet the need for better facilities in rural areas that have remained outside the realm of the IT industry. The first two Techno Lodges in the State are expected to come up at Kadakkal and Perinad in Kollam district shortly.
“The concept is aimed at bringing IT to the lowest rungs. By encouraging ITeS and BPO firms to operate from rural areas, we hope to generate employment opportunities,” says IT Secretary Ajay Kumar. The Techno Lodge will be just around 5,000 sq ft in area and designed to provide workspace for 50 to 100 employees.
The Techno Lodge centres will be set up in unused land or buildings belonging to the government or local bodies. Panchayats are being encouraged to provide buildings free. Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd. (KSITIL) will be the main implementing and marketing agency. The company will construct buildings or refurbish existing ones. The buildings will have broadband connectivity.
“Having such facilities will help the IT sector to tap the huge human resource in rural areas. It will be a major advantage, especially for qualified women who find it difficult to commute to work in far off cities,” Mr. Ajay Kumar explained.
The government plans to extend the network to 200 panchayats over the next five to seven years. “It will be driven by demand and need,” Mr. Ajaya Kumar said. “We have had a tremendous response from panchayats. Many of them have offered unused buildings and community halls constructed under various projects,” he said.
Sumeshks October 5th, 2009, 12:42 PM I had recently visited the proposed Kollam Technopark area .
Its a pretty large area, with a big pond still being cleared for land .
There are boards with directions to get to the area .
Its just 1.5 kms from Mukkada junction in Kundara.
Still question of other related infrastructure amenities comes up.
Hope things like houses, schools etc, are developed concurrently also with speed.
If so , this area could really turn the face of Kundara into a great IT hub .

Yes, Sumesh. It is a around 42 acres now. There are enough space in the surroundings. The areas under other relatively idle industires can also be utilized in future. The 4-laning of the Kottiyam - Kundara - Kollam Techno Park has started. From Kundara Mukkada junction to Techno Park, it will be two lane. Also, a water terminal is proposed at the Techno Park which is located at the Ashtamudi lake banks.
The site is a beautiful location which calm and quit from the city hustle and bustle though the place will be well connected with road, rail and water before the Kollam Techno Park inaugration by the end of next year. The Kollam - Punalur BG commissioning next year will be a boost for the decongestion of traffic in the Kundara region. The water terminal and the 4-laning of the Kundara - Kottiyam road will be added fillip for the development activites.

I too heard regarding the 4-lane road on Kottiyam-Kundara route.
Also, about water terminal too.
Already 220KV substation available in the aread at Mukkada junction.
Also, the Kollam-Punaloor BG coming up .
All this will be a great advantage for Kundara.
However, no projects are declared yet regarding other infrastructres
like houses, hospitals, schools , etc.
I strongly believe its necessary to develop all these
if IT professionals are expected to stay , esp. with their families.
If this doesn't happen, people will be forced to depend on
places like Kollam and Kottarakkara for this .
This would only increase problems in the already congested city areas.
Hope the government takes up this as key issue and
develop all such related infrastructures concurrently too ,
than merely start or declare to start IT parks all over the state .
sudheeshnairs October 13th, 2009, 03:33 PM ^^Govt has nothing much to do with the development of housing units, as well as say top end schools or hospitals. It is up to the private sector to do it.
Don't worry, it will follow once the market picks up. And do not expect thousands of professionals to land together.
As of now Kollam or Kottarakkara is not at all congested.
robin_a_p October 14th, 2009, 06:52 AM ^^ I think its better to keep Kundra as an industrial town.. let the apartments, malls, hospitals come up in Kollam city and Kottarakara town. Also I hope authorities will start frequent Volvo buses between Kollam city and Kottaraka probably extending upto Punalur. This will bring these towns closer to Kollam city and Technopark
Sumeshks October 14th, 2009, 09:43 AM I believe development should involve all factors,
not just some land takeovers and making buildings.
Hence, infrastructure development is a very important factor ,
whether handled by private or public sector .
Lets hope all such issues are addressed .

You are absolutely right. Robin. Kundara should remain as an industrial region. It has rich history as an industrial town. Alind, Starch, Ceramaics, KEL and a lot of other small scale and cashew industies are located in this town. It is true that Alind, Starch and the other big industries are not doing good, but the industrial ambience and culture of this town is really good. The good thing is Kundara town centre is just 14 Kms away from the Kollam city centre and 13 KMs away from the Kottarakara town centre.
The Kundara techno park will provide enough boost for the development of Kollam city as well as Kottarkkara town. Growth of Kollam city and Kottarakkara town will be towards the Kundara region which will enable the entire Kollam - Kottarakkara region to grow as a whole regarding infrastructural and hospitality facilities.
Volvo services from Kollam to Kottarakkara is a good idea. I used to travel by the Volvo buses in Bangalore and it is cheap and good for the service rendered. They are daily passes of Rs.75 and monthly passes of Rs. 1500. Lets see how the Volvo services are faring at Kochi and Trivandrum. If it is a success at these cities, it may prove good in the other cities of Kerala as well.

Emerging_Quilon November 17th, 2009, 09:50 AM A boost for Kerala IT, rural BPO's get a shot in the arm with the inauguration of Kerala's first Technolodges
Kollam: Two ‘technolodges,’ small IT service centres, were opened at Kadakkal and Perinad in Kollam district on Saturday, as part of the State government’s plan to push the spread of the information technology (IT) industry to the grassroots level.
The ‘technolodge’ scheme of the government seeks to facilitate the setting up of IT industry units in small towns and villages.
Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan, who inaugurated the facility at Kadakkal, said the scheme would help IT companies operate from low-cost rural centres and thereby create employment in rural areas.
“Today, this has seen fruition at Kadakkal and Perinad, and very soon, there will be more centres across the State,” Mr. Gurudasan said.
Under the scheme, the government plans to open 100 ‘technolodges’ across the State. Over 60 panchayats have already offered infrastructure to set up ‘technolodges.’
Technopark-based Accentia Technologies has taken over the ‘technolodges’ in Kollam and will start rolling out their services from these centres.
The 2,500-square-feet Kadakkal facility can seat 54 employees, while the 2,750-square-feet Perinad centre can accommodate 78.
V.S. Pradeep, managing director of Accentia Technologies, said the company planned to employ 250 professionals at the Kadakkal facility in three shifts and 300 professionals at Perinad. Tehnopark CEO Mervin Alexander said there was good response from IT firms to the concept of technolodges.
The State government has spent nearly Rs.20 lakh for refurbishing the building at Kadakkal and around Rs.3 million on the Perinad centre, officials said. “‘Technolodge’ has been set up with the objective to create low- cost alternative locations for BPO companies,” IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said. “Many IT companies in the State have already shown interest in the upcoming ‘technolodges’ as this initiative will provide local talent and lower cost opportunities.”
Emerging_Quilon November 17th, 2009, 09:54 AM The Kerala IT department’s decision to roll out techno-lodges, making IT infrastructure available at the panchayat level, has drawn instant interest from the industry, with Accentia Technologies announcing that it intends to add 2,000 jobs to be based out of these techno-lodges.
Accentia CEO Pradeep Viswambharan said his company planned to create these jobs across the villages of Kerala where the IT department and the local panchayats would develop requisite infrastructure for the IT industry. Healthcare receivables cycle management (HRCM) major Accentia, based at the Technopark here, had recently commenced operations from the UK, with the objective of tapping potential markets in Northern Ireland, England and Scotland.
The first two of the techno-lodges in Kerala, both located in Kollam district, have been fully taken up by Accentia Technologies. Mr Viswambharan said the company would base its production centres at these lodges and that all openings generated in these centres would be given to graduates from the respective villages.
He said the company was willing to take up more space at the upcoming techno-lodges, and that the political leadership had promised an environment free of hartals in these villages. Accentia has a presence in Oregon and New Jersey, US and in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE besides over half a dozen cities in India.

Kollam Technopark to be developed with NABARD aid
Covering an area of 40 acres at Kundara on the banks of the Ashtamudi lake, Technopark, Kollam will be developed as an IT park of global standards.
The project, when completed, will have 2 million sq. ft. of built-up space and will provide employment to around 15,000 IT/ITES professionals.
“Conceptual design for a modern IT building, measuring half a million sq ft of built-up space incorporating the Green building concept has already been approved for Technopark Kollam,” said Ajay Kumar, secretary (IT), who is also the chairman of the Technopark Board. “The proposed IT building in Kollam has a futuristic design marking a clear distinction from conventional structures,” he added.
Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark, said the first phase of the Technopark Kollam building was expected to be ready for occupation by early 2011. “This iconic structure will be located at the topmost point on the campus from where one will have an enchanting view of the Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam Technopark will also be the first IT park to have access also through water transport,” he added.
The Technopark campus at Kundara and the Technolodges at Kadakkal and Perinad are expected to generate over 10,000 jobs in Kollam district and provide a fillip to the rural economy.
The development of the new Technopark campus is being taken up with financial assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
SEZ status
The government of India has notified the park as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
NABARD has extended Rs.49.53 crore as assistance for the venture under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) scheme.
Technopark Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mervin Alexander said here on Saturday that the sanctioned amount would be used for the development works on the campus, including the construction of a 100,000 sq. ft building and the development of power infrastructure, internal roads, drains and culverts, canal embankment, water supply and distribution and sewage treatment facilities.
The funds would also be used for the development of Mulavana village and Perayam panchayat in Kundara where the Technopark was coming up.
Infrastructure
State Information Technology Secretary Ajay Kumar said the new information technology park would provide world class infrastructure at Kundara for the industry, helping to create jobs and earn foreign exchange for the State.
It will also assist the development of the surrounding rural economy, he added.
Emerging_Quilon November 24th, 2009, 08:36 AM The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned Rs 49.53 crore towards development of Technopark Kollam. The park was recently notified as a special economic zone.
This is the second funding by Nabard for an IT infrastructure project under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) scheme. The first was for the infrastructural development of Infopark, Kochi, during last financial year.
Technopark will use the fund for developing the Kollam project, which is coming up at Kundara.
Work on power infrastructure, land, water supply, sewage treatment plant and construction of a building of 100,000 sft will all be undertaken with the sanctioned amount, an IT department release said.
The funding will also extend to the entire Mulavana and Perayam villages. “We have already set up technolodges in Kadakkal and Perinad and all the parks together will generate an employment of over 10,000,” said Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark.
Emerging_Quilon December 2nd, 2009, 09:44 AM Kerala is yet to realise the true value of its information technology infrastructure and the several advantages it had, being the best IT investment destination in the country, Ajay Kumar, Principal Secretary, Information Technology, said here on Tuesday.
Launching ‘Kerala IT News,’ a news portal dedicated exclusively to the coverage of developments in the IT sector in the State, Dr. Ajay Kumar said the several pluses such as excellent broadband connectivity, massive built-up spaces and penetration of mobile telephony that the State had offered it an unbeatable advantage on the IT investment front. About one million square feet space was being constructed as part of Phase Three of the Technopark at Kazhakkuttom. Work would also commence soon at the Technocity at Pallippuram. A massive Technopark would also come up soon in Kollam. Despite all this, the State was yet to realise its brand value. There was, therefore, need for a comprehensive platform to promote the Kerala IT brand, Dr. Ajay Kumar said.
Offering felicitation, Technopark chief executive officer Merwin Alexander, CEO, Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram, said the media had been very supportive in the growth of Technopark. He hoped that the same spirit of support and encouragement would continue in the days to come. Rethan Kelkar, Director, Kerala State IT Mission, said media portals had a major role to play in the current IT scenario and hoped that there would be attempts at information dissemination on modern day gadgets.
Emerging_Quilon December 2nd, 2009, 10:45 AM First two techno-lodges are inaugurated by chief minister VS Achuthanandanat Kadackal and Perinad panchayats in Kollam district recently. The first two techno-lodges had been fully taken over by Technopark-based Accentia Technologies, a company specializing in end-to-end business process management solutions for healthcare, financial and insurance sectors.
The techo-lodge concept is expected to broad base the growth of the IT sector in the state through smaller-sized IT infrastructure. The techno-lodges at Kadackal and Perinad respectively have 2,500 sq ft and 2,750 sq ft area.
Techno lodges are planned to be set up in small towns and rural panchayats where unutilized land not less than one acre or buildings are available with the local bodies. The Kerala State IT Infrastructure (KSITI), which is the facilitator for the project, will bear the cost of investment for construction of buildings, and their basic furnishing.
Emerging_Quilon December 17th, 2009, 11:07 AM Mervin Alexander, chief executive of Technopark, said the first phase of Technopark Kollam is expected to be ready for occupation by early 2011.
The project once complete will have 2 million square feet of built-up space and will provide employment to around 15,000 people.
Technopark Kollam will be developed on 40 acres on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake. A beautiful water terminal is also planned as part of the project and will be the first of its kind in any IT parks in India.
Conceptual design for a modern IT building incorporating the green building concept has already been approved for Technopark Kollam.
The central government has already notified the Kollam Techno Park at Kundara as SEZ.
Emerging_Quilon December 23rd, 2009, 07:26 AM Thrust on state-of-the-art facilities and work atmosphere in villages
Call to utilise village-level human resources
Technolodges planned in 200 panchayats
Augmenting the lowest tier of information technology (IT) infrastructure in the State, the second Technolodge has become functional at Perinad in Kollam district.
Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty formally inaugurated the facility on Saturday. The 2750 sq. ft building has been fully taken over by the Technopark-based Accentia Technologies, a company specialising in end-to-end Business Process Management (BPM) solutions for the healthcare, financial and insurance sectors.
The company will employ about 200 IT professionals from Perinad and neighbouring areas to meet the growing business demands world-wide.
Inaugurating the Technolodge, the Minister stressed the need to utilise the human resource potential at the village-level in Kerala. He said the Technolodges would provide state-of-the-art facilities and work atmosphere in villages.
IT Principal Secretary Ajay Kumar handed over the key of the Perinad Technolodge to C.K. Sooraj, Director, Operations & HR, Accentia.
“The Technolodge concept is aimed at creating low-cost alternative locations for BPO companies. Many IT companies in Kerala have already shown interest in the upcoming Technolodges as this initiative will provide local talent and infrastructure facilities and provide lower cost opportunities,” said Mr. Ajay Kumar.
Education Minister M.A. Baby, in whose Assembly constituency the new Technolodge is located, presided over the function. Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran, presidents and members of local self-government institutions and officials from various departments also spoke. Mervin Alexander, Director, Kerala State IT Infrastructure & CEO, Technopark, was also present.
The first Technolodge at Kadakkal, Kollam, was inaugurated in November 2009.
The Technolodge initiative has been launched by the government to widen the IT infrastructure in Kerala and extend it to the grassroots-level by establishing a network of small IT parks in small towns and villages. The Department of IT is encouraging ITES and BPO firms to operate from rural areas and thereby generate employment opportunities.
The facility will be set up on unused land or buildings belonging to the government or local bodies. Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited is the implementing agency for the Technolodge scheme.
The rural IT centre constitutes the third tier of IT infrastructure in Kerala, after the three major ‘hubs’ located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode (Technopark, Infopark and Cyberpark) and the secondary-level ‘spokes’ in smaller cities.
The government has announced plans to extend the proposed network of Technolodges to 200 panchayats over the next five to seven years.^^
Emerging_Quilon December 23rd, 2009, 07:32 AM The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on Monday approved a Rs 33.85-crore project to supply power to the proposed Kollam-Kundara Technopark. The power supply project will be taken up as deposit work, the KSEB said in a statement.
Emerging_Quilon December 28th, 2009, 07:44 AM After getting the tag of a perfect holiday destination, Kerala is now looking to climb onto the IT and ITeS bandwagon with a Rs 10,000 crore expansion plan for the state’s tech parks in the next seven to eight years.
Kerala IT secretary Ajay Kumar told Financial Chronicle that Rs 2,500 crore of this would be the state government’s contribution.
“Of this, Rs 1,000 crore would be deployed by this fiscal and another Rs 1,000 crore by 2010- 2011. We have also set aside Rs 20 to Rs 30 crore for the rural IT parks (techno lodges) scheme,” he said.
The expansion of IT parks include techno parks in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, info parks in Amabalapuzha, Cherthala, Kochi and Kollam, cyber parks in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod and a number of Techno lodges.
Low cost of operations and lower employee attrition levels are the attractions available in Kerala. Companies that have set up units in Kerala include IT majors like Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Infosys, Affiliated Computer Services, OPI Global, IBS Software Services, UST Global, ACS, Allianz Cornhill, Sutherland and Cognizant.
“We saw Kerala as an underutilized destination. Cost wise, it made a lot of sense to set up a unit here. The state government has made a conscious effort to keep out union problems from the IT sector here. Now there is a clear focus,” said Krishna Prasad, head - global excellence, UST Global.
The state government has also decided to set up the techno lodge scheme, undertaken by Technopark based out of Trivandrum, for companies wanting to reduce operational costs and envisage developing a small building which has a seating capacity of 25 employees for IT, ITeS and BPO operations. The government aims to raise rural employment with this scheme, Kumar said.
With the government planning to establish around 100 techno lodges across the state, Kerala State IT Infrastructure (KSITI) is implementing this project. Over 60 panchayats have already comeforward offering facilities to set up these techno lodges.
The first step in taking ICT (information and communication technology) to the masses has been taken in Kerala. As a part of this initiative, at least one person in each of the 65 lakh families in the state will be made IT-literate.
Emerging_Quilon December 29th, 2009, 01:22 PM Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government proposes to invest Rs 2000 crore in the next two years for development of infrastructure at IT parks being set up in various parts of the state, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said today. The aim is to make Kerala the most sought after IT destination in the country, he said.
Stating that Kerala government has an investor friendly approach, Achutanandan said IT industry, which experienced a slowdown in the last 12 to 18 months, has started showing signs of recovery.
He was speaking after inaugurating the India IT Summit-2009, organised by CII-Southern region. CII-Southern Region Chairman C R Swaminathan said the summit was an initiative to support Kerala government to promote the state as one of the most favourable destinations for IT in India. "Kerala has a very conducive environment for the growth of IT," he said.

Emerging_Quilon March 25th, 2010, 08:26 AM Pathanapuram Grama Panchayath is going to house the 6th Techno Lodge in Kollam district.
The IT revolution is happening at Kollam villages as each panchayath is raring to join the Techno Lodge bandwagon.
Emerging_Quilon March 30th, 2010, 03:07 PM Kundara, is all set to embrace a lot of development projects which are ongoing and are already planned. The town which is one of the most important one in the district is facing acute traffic problems.
The new BG railway line is bisecting the town into two parts and there are no overbridges or flyovers in a 10 Km stretch of the town.
As the town is going to be the gateway of the Kollam IT park, flyovers need to be constructed altest at the 3 major junctions of the town at Elampaloor, Mukkada junction and the Pallimukku junction.
The proposed 4-lane from Kottiyam, the NH-208 from the Kollam City, the Anchalumoodu - Elampalloor road all meet at Elampallor or Mukkada.
Last week during the BG conversion safety inspection, the railway gates between Karicode and Arumurikkada were closed for 30 minutes and the town came to a standstill with traffic congestion at every nook and corner. It took almost half an hour to restore the traffic situation even after the railway gates were opened.
The railway gates are going to be frequently closed once the BG inaugration is done and this will create traffic congestion and chaos in Kundara town as well as western parts of Kollam city.
It is very urgent that the railways and the authorities contruct the flyovers at the 3 major junctions of the town. The IT park is expected to be commisioned before May 2011. There is very little time and something needs to be done immedeately.

Emerging_Quilon July 23rd, 2010, 11:13 AM The Technolodges at Kadakkal and Perinad have common facilities such as discussion rooms, pantry space, wash area and reception, an official spokesman said.
The Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL) has implemented the Technolodge project.
The State Government intends to set up around 100 Technolodges. Over 60 panchayats have come forward offering facilities to set up Technolodges.
Accentia Technologies specialises in end-to-end business process management solutions for the healthcare, financial and insurance sectors.
Around 300 employees can work across three shifts at these centres. “We have already appointed 50 professionals at both the locations,” said Mr Pradeep Vishwambharan, CEO, Accentia Technologies.
These pros have been undergoing training at Technopark. The company will recruit more from Kollam district and hopes to complete the process by the end of the third quarter.
The professionals are being trained to cater to non-voice legal and business transcription, Mr Vishwambharan said.
Accentia is listed in the Bombay and Singapore Stock Exchanges and employ over 5,000 professionals globally.
UDYOG RATTAN
Mr Vishwambharan was recently conferred the Udyog Rattan Award by the Institute of Economic Studies for the company's outstanding contribution to the growth of IT/ITeS industry in the country.
Accentia was the first company that came forward to set up a BPO in Kadakkal and Perinad.
Mr Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark, hoped that Accentia will encourage other IT companies to set up similar centres in rural Kerala.
The State Government invested Rs 18.5 lakh towards refurbishing the building at Kadakkal while the investment for Perinad was Rs 27.4 lakh.
The value of these buildings will be treated as the Government's share in the equity of KSITI where the State Government will fix the value of the land/building in consultation with District Collector.
Reghu August 29th, 2010, 04:56 AM Kollam Techno Park is one of the achievements of the outgoing Kollam collector A. Shajahan among an impressive list of achievements.
He was instrumental in acquiring the necessary land for the Techno Park at Kundara within 4 months after the announcement of the park. Around 40 acres of land was aquired at the Ceramics premises.
The collector said the first phase of the Kollam Techno park will be inaugrated by the first week of January 2011.
Other achievements of the collector include the launch of the techno lodges at the rural villages of Kollam district. Two more techno lodges have been sanctioned apart from the already approved four. Perinad and Kadakkal techno lodges are already operational as Accentia Technologies a BPO firm employs more than 200 professionals in the techno lodges.
A. Shajahan played a key role in starting Akshaya centres in all panchayaths in the district which enabled the district to achieve 100% e-literacy. Also, Akshaya extension centres have been started at all the important public utility offices in the district.

Reghu September 21st, 2010, 08:27 AM Central Government has approved the alignment of Kollam - Thenni NH-220 which incidentally passes very near to the upcoming Kollam Techno Park site at Kundara.

It will be great if the alignment is more customized so that the distance from the proposed Aranmula International Airport to the NH 220 is minimal to tap the airport potential.

Reghu November 7th, 2010, 08:28 AM KOCHI: The Kerala State Information Technology Department has sanctioned 10 new rural IT parks, also known as technolodges, across the State.
This is in addition to the two such facilities already functioning at Perinad and Kadakkal panchayats in Kollam district. Besides, yet another technolodge has been readied by Infopark at Thirumarady panchayat in Ernakulam district.
“The technolodge at Thirumarady is expected to turn operational within a month,” Principal IT Secretary Ajay Kumar told Th e Hindu on Wednesday.
The newly sanctioned technolodges include the ones at Veliyam, Anchal, and Poothakulam panchayats in Kollam district, Mayyil panchayat in Kannur district and Kodakara block panchayat in Thrissur district.
Unused or vacant buildings belonging to government or local bodies will be used to set up technolodges. The building will be leased out to Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL), the nodal agency for the project, for 90 years. The building at Thirumarady had been leased from Khadi Gram Udyog.
KSITIL may on its own through agencies like Technopark, Infopark, Cyberpark or other IT-centric non-profit organisation will set up technolodges.
The implementing agencies will also market these technolodges to IT, ITeS and BPO companies.
Technolodges with varying built-up space will be rented out to one or more companies depending on demand. They will be managed by a committee chaired by the District Collector and will include the local MLA and other stakeholders.
Mr. Kumar said that the concept offered a win-win situation to both the State government and the IT companies.
“Since there is no considerable difference in infrastructure available in cities and rural areas in the State, the government will be able to adopt a more inclusive IT growth taking its benefits beyond cities and towns,” Mr. Kumar said.
Low costs
Companies on the other hand benefits from relatively low operational costs in terms of rent and wages. Besides, companies can tap into rural manpower otherwise reluctant to work away from their home districts thus considerably reducing the attrition rate.
For instance, Accentia Technologies Limited has taken up technolodges at Perinad and Kadakkal in Kollam district and have many employees coming from the nearby areas, said Mr. Kumar.

Subhash, I have compiled the news that came in some of the Malayalam dailies. The alighnment of NH 220 is finalised and the route is passing near to the Kollam Techni Park at Kundara. Probably a link road has to be constructed from the proposed NH 220 to reach the Kollam Techno Park. Also, the NH 220 is termed as NH 183, if I am right.
I will update you regarding the progress as and when the updates come. I have very special interest in this route as my hometown is along this route. The proposed IT Park is hardly 10 Kms away from my ancestral house.

That is a great news. But as per the news it is a rural IT park. It cannot be called as simply arural IT park just because it is in a rural area. Techno Lodges are usually called rural IT parks.
The areas is going to see a major developmental boost due to its proximity to important places nearby. It is hardly 4to 5 Kms away fro m the industrial town of Kundara and juat 20 Kms away from Kollam city.
The other major IT parks are also coming up at rural areas as per definition like Koratty, Pallippuram, etc.

The State is represented by Kerala State IT Mission Director Ishita Roy, Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander and Infoparks and Cyberpark CEO Binu A. Pazhoor. Kerala IT, the unified brand developed to promote business opportunities in the field of information technology, will showcase the IT parks in the State, including the just launched Kollam Technopark, Cherthala Infopark, Technocity and Cyberparks at Kozhikode and Kannur, along with various other investment opportunities in the IT sector across Kerala. The theme of this year's CeBIT expo is cloud computing.
The Kerala IT team will also visit the Pre Park in Kaiserslautern, Germany. A five-member delegation from here had visited the Kerala IT team in Technopark and Infopark in January 2011 to discuss a possible collaboration. During their visit to CeBIT, the Kerala delegation will try to formalise plans for a mutual collaboration with the Pre Park.
“CeBIT is an excellent platform to showcase the strength of Kerala IT and we plan to project investment opportunities. In the past few years, many blue chip firms have established their presence in Kerala. The State has witnessed unparalleled development in the IT sector during the past few years. ,” said Mr. Alexander before leaving for Hannover. “At CeBIT, we look forward to highlighting the opportunities in the IT/ITES/BPO sector in Kerala,” Mr. Pazhoor said.
KOLLAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said he is hopeful that the construction work on SmartCity will commence without delay.
Inaugurating the Kollam Technopark at Kundara, near here, on Tuesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the SmartCity project was being implemented with better terms and conditions.
While the SmartCity project would provide direct employment to over 90,000 professionals, the second and third phase of Technopark and Technocity, when commissioned, would employ two lakh professionals. At present Technopark employed 28,000 professionals.
He said the Kollam Technopark would provide employment to 15,000 professionals. The park would have built-up area of 200,000 sq ft.
At the function, he christened the first building of the Kollam Technopark as Ashtamudi Towers.
He said in additional to road access, the Kollam Technopark would have a waterway access as it was situated on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake.
The waterway to the park was being developed by the Inland Navigation Department. Under the present government, there had been tremendous progress in the IT sector.
Steps had been taken to expand the IT sector in the northern parts of the State. A Cyberpark on the lines of Infopark and Technopark had come up in Kozhikode. Work on Cybercity had also started in Kozhikode and an IT park in Kasaragod. On February 19, work for constructing an IT park in Kannur would be inaugurated.
He said if the State had just two IT parks earlier, in 57 months, the figure had gone up to 10, thereby creating thousands of employment opportunities.
The function was presided over by Education Minister M.A. Baby, who is also the Kundara MLA.
CEO of Technopark Mervin Alexander presented the report. The former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth spoke.

Reghu July 13th, 2011, 09:31 AM Guys,
Read in Manorama about the interest of 4 companies setting up their offices at the upcoming Kollam Techno Park.
Out of the 4 companies showed interest, 2 are foreign companies. There was no information about when they actually plan to open the operations or the name of the companies.
The change of government does have an impact on the Kollam Techno Park development. Not sure whether UDF has the same interest in the development of Kollam Techno Park as that of LDF.
Lets see if the companies open their offices this year itself.
Reghu July 14th, 2011, 02:31 PM Mr. Kunhalikutty said administrative sanction had been given for 11 technolodges. Of these, three had commenced functioning. The technolodges at Veliyam in Kollam and Mayil in Kannur will soon start functioning. The others technolodges that been given the nod are at Anchal in Kollam, Pathanapuram, Puthukulam, Karikunnam, Kodakara and Veloor in Thrissur district.
The above highlighted 4 technolodges are apart from two operational ones at Perinad and Kadackal.
Reghu July 26th, 2011, 08:47 AM The first phase of Kollam Techno Park that is coming up at the outskirts of Kundara town will be operational by December this year, said the techno park CEO Mervin Alexander.
The authorities will conduct business meetings and Chamber of commerce meeting to attract companies to the IT park.

Not very sure. But, I heard that they had plans to move from the Techno Lodges to Kollam Techno Park once it is operational as Techno Park has more infrastructural facilities compared to the techno lodges. But not very sure if the info is correct. Anyway, lets wait and see. As per the CEO, the park will be functionally operational by December 2011.

Reghu November 29th, 2011, 08:19 AM Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 28: Technopark-Thiruvananthapuram, in association with the Group of Technology Companies, conducted a roadshow for Technopark-Kollam, its first venture at neighbouring Kollam, as part of the hub-and-spoke model of expansion in the State.
Titled Technopark-Kollam — Putting Kollam on the Global IT Map, the roadshow sought to unveil the completed phase-1 of the IT building that offers one lakh sq ft of built-up space with plug-and-play facilities to investors.
Technopark-Kollam is being developed on 40 acres of Special Economic Zone land as a modern and global-standard IT park in Kundara on the banks of the scenic Ashtamudi Lake.
It was in February that Technopark-Kollam was inaugurated and the foundation stone for the first IT building laid.
According to the master plan, five lakh sq.ft with plug-and-play facilities was planned. One lakh sq ft of that is now ready for occupation in the initial phase.
The IT building has been developed incorporating the ‘green building' concept and has a futuristic design, representing a clear distinction from conventional construction.
WATERWAY OPTION
The remaining land will be allotted to IT/ITES companies and IT infrastructure developers as developed plots.
The park will have two million sq ft of total built-up space when fully complete and will provide employment to an estimated around 15,000 professionals.
This is also the first IT park in the State that will have a mode of water transportation to Kollam city and a boat jetty has been completed.
According to Mr Mervin Alexander, Chief Executive Officer, Technopark, the objective of the roadshow was to showcase the first phase to potential investors comprising Chief Executive Officers of Technopark companies looking at expanding operations across the State and other investors.
OVERSEAS QUERIES
“We have already received enquiries from a few US-based companies and we are hopeful that the first phase would be fully operational by April next,” he added.
The State Public Works Department has completed the widening and development of the road to the park. Work on canal embankment, water supply and sewage treatment plant and a 110-KV substation has too has been completed.
The State Government had sanctioned Rs 5.95 crore for developing the road infrastructure.
This apart, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has sanctioned Rs 63 crore for the development of the park under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund scheme.
The estimated cost of developing the IT building is Rs 25 crore, Mr Alexander said.

Reghu August 9th, 2012, 05:41 AM Kerala will showcase a slew of IT-related projects, including IT parks in Kollam, Alappuzha and Thrissur districts at a global investment summit slated for next month in Kochi.
The the three-day Emerging Kerala meet is being held at a time when the state is seeking to build on the success of its Technopark and Infopark schemes, which were largely restricted to the big metros, and usher in a new wave of IT revolution in the smaller towns and rural areas.
Official sources said new IT parks have been proposed at Kundara on the banks of the Ashtamudi lake, east of Kollam district; Pallippuram near Cherthala, Alappuzha, 25 kms south-east of Kochi; and Koratty in Thrissur district by the side of National Highway and 12 kms from Kochi international airport.
They said the rural IT park concept will establish a new benchmark fat a time when giants in the field who set up bases in big metros are looking for opportunities in smaller towns to improve their bottom line by shedding extra costs while maintaining skilled manpower.
“Kerala is going to be the ideal platform to experiment this third wave of IT revolution in the country,” says Mr P.H. Kurian, Principal Secretary, IT, Government of Kerala.
“The first wave was confined to big metros like Bangalore and Hyderabad, while the second was expanded to smaller metros like Kochi and Pune. Apart from the connectivity, the skilled manpower and better logistics in smaller Kerala towns can set pace for the new wave of IT revolution. As much as 53 per cent of Kerala techies hail from rural pockets.”
Kerala, which pioneered an IT revolution with Technopark in 1992, has had a chequered growth in the sector. After a lull, it is now bubbling with the vibrancy of Smart City, whose construction in Kochi began in October last year.
Now, the proposed rural IT parks are expected to take this momentum forward in a big way, given the advantages the state’s rural pockets have when it comes to availability of skilled manpower and better logistics.
“The rural IT park is going to be a pioneering model as big companies in IT, ITeS (IT-enabled services) and BPO (business process outsourcing) are driven by the cost advantage factors,” said Mr Kurian. “IT is still one of the rising sectors for Kerala, contributing more than Rs 3,500 crores in export revenue. It is growing at a rapid pace.”
Considering the state’s repository of qualified and trained IT professionals, the cost of start-up projects are low when compared to other major IT destinations like Bangalore and Hyderabad in the country.
It was in 1998 that the state government announced its first IT Policy. The follow-up came in the form of IT Policies in 2001 and 2007, each providing comprehensive support for further development of this sector. They helped Kerala emerge as a preferred IT/ITeS investment destination and a leader in e-governance. The new IT Policy 2012 will be issued in August.
Apart from the new IT policy, Kerala has quite a few factors that give the state an advantageous position in terms of IT. These include high connectivity with the Kochi gateway that handles 70 per cent of the country’s data traffic, the state’s high literacy rate, tele-density that is double the national average, talent pool of English-speaking people, just 10 per cent employee attrition, schemes to groom students as future techies and engineering colleges producing 50,000 engineers every year, besides the moderate climate of the green state.
Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), which is the nodal agency for the global meet, has identified 26 sectors and prepared a number of projects to present to investors at the September 12-14 meet in Kochi.
“IT is one of key areas, given the potential of Kerala, which supplies a great number of skilled professionals to all major IT hubs in the world,” Mr Alkesh Sharma, Managing Director of KSIDC, said.
“Our aim is to turn Kerala into a favourite IT destination, while transforming the state itself as a leading global hub of economic activities under the ongoing campaign of Emerging Kerala.”
Another proposal coming for bids at the meet is a residential complex worth Rs 14 crore to house IT professionals in Kozhikode, a tier-2 city. There are 40 IT companies in that city, and the project envisages the development of an apartment building for leasing.
Kerala will also scout for partners to further develop the next stages of the Infopark at Kochi and Techno city (Phase-IV of Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram).
Reghu August 9th, 2012, 01:37 PM Kerala is set to usher in a new wave of information technology revolution by taking hi-tech aspirations to its far-flung rural hamlets and smaller towns, say officials.
The IT parks at Kollam, Alappuzha, Kannur and Thrissur districts will be on display at the Emerging Kerala Global Connect meet in September. Several firms have evinced interest in these projects coming up with private participation.
New IT parks have been proposed at Kundara on the banks of Ashtamudi Kayal east of Kollam district; Pallippuram near Cherthala, Alappuzha, 25kms south-east of Kochi, Koratty in Thrissur district and Payyanur in Kannur.
“Kerala is going to be the ideal platform to experiment with this third wave of IT revolution in the country,” claims P H Kurian, principal secretary of IT and industries department.
“The first wave was confined to big metros like Bangalore and Hyderabad, while the second expanded to smaller metros like Kochi and Pune. Besides excellent connectivity, the skilled manpower and better logistics can set pace for the new wave”.
As many as 53% of Kerala techies hail from rural pockets and the rural parks will set a new benchmark for the next-generation IT revolution at a time when corporates in large metros are looking to smaller towns to improve their bottom line by shedding extra costs while maintaining skilled manpower.
Kerala, which pioneered India’s IT revolution with Technopark in 1992, has remained a laggard in the sector. It is now bubbling with the vibrancy of Smart City, construction for which began in Kochi last October.

State to showcase new IT projects before investors at the Emerging Kerala Global Connect

Santosh, lets wait and watch. The Trivandrum Techno Park was opend in 1991...but it took a decade for it to establish. Now it is 22 years old.
Kollam Techno Park is about to come live in the coming months as a handful of companies have already acquired space. You may check the KerlaIT.org site for the details. Out of these companies one company is going to start their operation from Kollam Technopark based at Kundara in a few months. Currently, they are recruiting people for the project that will be based at IT park in Kundara.
Yes...there is enough land (44 acres).
Important thing to notice here is that Kundara Ceramics and Alind Industries both adjacent to the IT park have a combined area of 350+ acres...
Incase, if these industries are not able to recuperate in future, then based on the IT boom at Kollam Technopark these land can be amalgamated for further expansion of the IT park. That makes the IT park a really sprawlling one like that of Electronics City in Bangalore. But this may take years. Anyway, lets keep our fingures crossed.

Reghu October 14th, 2012, 07:26 AM As per the new it policy, govt plans to develope town ships in non metro it parks, including the one in kundara, which will open soon. 30% of the land can be used for it,which can be decided by the director board of the it park, preference should be given to shopping mall, multiplex, school, guest house etc in the town ship. This is to attract more professionals and companies to the park located in non metro areas.
Yes, as per the IT department, professionals in Kerala prefers a city with metro culture as their working location due to malls, shopping centers, entertainment space, pubs, big bars.
As most of IT parks in Kerala are 15 to 25 Kms away from the main cities, they want these areas also to be developed as major towships having all the above mentioned amenities and facilities. IT department believes this may attract more IT employees and companies to the IT parks.
Hence they have approved private townships and private IT parks with subsidies of 15 lakhs in EKM and TVM and 25 lakhs in other places including Kundara.

Kerala, which is seeking to position itself as an attractive destination for national and global ICT companies, is showcasing a host of IT parks as potential investment opportunities at its pavilion at Gitex Technology Week.
The Kerala stall features the state's IT clusters, including the upcoming Technocity, the Kollam Technopark, Infopark-Cherthala, the Kinfra High-Tech Park, Technopark Phase III, and Cyberparks at Kozhikode and Kannur.
Over the past few years, Kerala's IT sector has been recording a major growth with many blue-chip firms like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant and ACS making a stronger presence.
India's Minister of Human Resources Development, Communications and IT Kapil Sibal visited the pavilion, accompanied by Indian Ambassador to the UAE M.K. Lokesh. Earlier, Indian Consul-General in the UAE Sanjay Verma formally inaugurated the pavilion.
The Kerala delegation is led by P.H. Kurian, Principal Secretary for IT of the Government of Kerala. Part of the delegation are Technopark CEO Girish Babu; Vijayakumar, Special Secretary to Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty; Vasudevan, senior business development manager of Technopark; and representatives of IT companies from Technopark and Infopark.
The theme of the Kerala pavilion this year is green, a colour symbolic of the state's greenery and its emphasis on eco-friendly development strategy.
Babu said the Kerala delegation's focus at this year's Gitex is not only to lure SMEs into the technology sector but also to encourage co-developers to play an active role in developing IT infrastructure in various locations. "Kerala has a big potential yet to be tapped. We are looking at stronger public private partnership to spur the growth of the sector."

sudheeshnairs October 16th, 2012, 02:51 PM The Trivandrum Techno Park was opend in 1991...but it took a decade for it to establish. Now it is 22 years old.
I have been hearing this year 1991 many time, many forums. It is as if Technopark started its full fledged operations in 1991. Infact the ‘Foundation Stone’ was laid for the Park in 1991. I think the inauguration of the first facility was during 1995 or so.
The first two buildings, Pampa & Periya were small to begin with, 60,000 sft. Much smaller compared with the new parks being developed in other places now.
The growth happened in later part of 2000s after Infosys started operations.
Situations have changed much in the last decade. Now the state has some critical mass. So it should be easier for new locations to prosper.
Reghu October 16th, 2012, 03:25 PM Yes..Sudheesh. But I think the development of IT in Kerala is not expected as it is intented even in the major cities even though our state colleges and even the neighbouring states colleges produce thousands of Engineers.
One reason may be the identity crisis of Kerala as a major IT destination unlike Bangalore/Hydrabad/Pune etc....
The main reason may be our leaders and politicians.
It is great that the Malayalees in the top brass of leading IT companies promote Kerala and its major cities for IT investment but as I said it is taking time for them to set up a company here.
Infosys, TCS, Wipro took almost 10 years since ITs inception to set up companies in Kerala. Wipro's population In Kerala is minimal. It is true that Infosys and TCS and some multinationals are planning on a larger scale ...but time is ticking away.

Now, we need to attract some prominent companies. A small branch of Wipro or Tech Mahindra or Infosys would be an great to start with atleast by next year. Hope TVM Tech Parks proximity (65 Kms) also helps.

The distance between Technocity and Kundara is less than 50 Kms and IT Clusters will merge in next 10-15 years and be assured Kollam Technopark will see some good occupancy rates ...
dilmohanklm October 31st, 2012, 03:44 PM Updates as on their website
OFFERINGS:
* SEZ Land parcels available for IT/ITES Companies and/or developers on long lease
* SEZ Built-up space available on monthly rental basis to be ready by November 2012
Reghu November 2nd, 2012, 03:00 PM 10 - 15 years is a long period of time. By that time..I think some of the other cities in Kerala may overtake some of the current top cities in certain other aspects not IT. IT is inevitable and will be moving to Villages in future. Just like work at home...I think work from your town/village option will come up in future as the Internet and Connectivity bandwidth is improving with better remote working softwares.
That time you may have to visit your parent office one or twice in a year. Rest of the year enjoy your work in your home town or village. This scenario is coming up in foreign countries which will reduce the traffic, pollution and air fare.
Kannur, Trichur, and Kollam will be completely in a differnt league that time. I truly believes Kollam will make great strides before 2020 in IT sector. Not just IT even in Port and Mineral sector as well.

This will be valid only in few sectors in IT itself. Say now company doesnt want its details to be spread out , there are few restrictied policies, or in case company deals with hardware . Or VPNs can be accessed only from certain networks
Reghu November 3rd, 2012, 10:58 AM Yes...you are correct. But in general in future an office will become really virtual and space and location does not matter. As you said in certain sectors such as hardware related companies including chip manufacturers and other embedded related software development this may not be viable as per the present technology.
But in a non-IT sector..this work at home concept will be more relevant. If a government servant from Kollam rather than travelling to his Trivandrum office..if he can work on all his softcopy files from his home in Kollam through his laptop, Telephone and by webex/skype..then why should he waste his time and money travelling to TVM everyday. Ofcourse, nowadays you can have meetings through Video conferencing or webex/skype etc..:)

Reghu January 10th, 2013, 01:33 PM CM launches first NRI incubator
Chief minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday inaugurated India’s first Technology Business In-cubator (TBI) for NRI startups, set up at Info-park here. The launch function was held at the venue of the Pravasi Bha-ratiya Divas 2013 meet.
The department of science & technology of the Union government has contributed `2.5 crore for the NRI-TBI, set up under the PPP model with the support of Technopark-TBI, NORKA department & Infopark-Kochi. NRK businessman Yousufali M.A. will put in an equal amount.
Ravi Pillai, another NRK businessman, is the joint promoter for the Kollam incubator. The private partner for Cyberpark incubator will be finalised soon. The present 2,500 square facility will be upgraded to 10,000 sqft by April. Similar incubators will be launched at Infopark Kollam and Cyberpark, Kozhikode as well by April.
“Though the state has 25 lakh NRIs, not many have come forward to start enterprises in the state. Therefore, a dedicated TBI focused solely on NRIs is the light at the end of this tunnel,” Mr Chandy said.
“We are planning a plug and play office space, mentors and consultants from various fields and much more to make starting a business easier. More value additions like the green channel facilitation, remotely accessible office, managed talent pool etc to make it a perfect place to establish an NRI venture,” said Dr. K C Chandrashekharan Nair, MD, Technopark-TBI.

me little optimist for kollam .....i dont understand why they choose kundara
for technopark..this place is 20 km from kottiyam too long from NH and the roads are narrow and congested
better they can choose a place near to NH or TVM border for better connectivity frm tvm technopark and Airport...
lot of works there to finish sometime it will take upto the end of this year and the work force is small compared to the construction that happen in phase 2
Reghu January 23rd, 2013, 07:12 AM Airport connectivity is important for an IT Park but Kundara is not so far away from TVM airport if consider the distance of major IT parks in Bangalore to the BIAL airport.
Electronics City - BIAL Airport distance - 65 KM
ITPL - BIAL airport distance - 55 KM.
If Aranmula airport comes Kundara can be connected to the new airport by a distance of 50 - 55 Kms.
Moreover, a 4-lane road was mooted from Kottiyam to Karunagapally passing close to the Kundara IT park. This will reduce the distance considerably.
Kundara - Kottiyam distance is 12 Kms. From Kundara Mukkada to IT park distance is 5 Kms. Kottiyam - TVM airport distance is 50 Kms. So total distance from Kundara IT park to TVM airport will be 50+12+5 = 67 Kms which is almost the same distance from Electronics city to BIAL airport.

Reghu January 23rd, 2013, 07:15 AM Nice sunset view. Thanks for the efforts to showcase the current status of Kundara IT park.
Ani..Kundara IT Park will develop in future. Aranmula airport will be the nearest one to Kundara IT park than TVM airport. Around 55 Kms.
Morover, IT Parks can be envisaged in South Kollam especially Kottiyam - Paripally stretch. Lets not confine to just one IT park. We should have may IT parls like that of Bangalore. IT industry will not generate any environmental pollution and will genrate more jobs and income. Lets hope for the best optimistically.

Reghu January 30th, 2013, 07:22 AM Thanks for that gorgeous snap, Robin.
Though some people say the location of the Kollam Techno Park was not an ideal one due to the calm and rustic nature of the place which is atleast 4 to 5 KMs away from Mukkada the town center of Kundara.
I believe from a futuristic point of view this is a great location as the Kollam Techno Park location is almost equidiatant from Kollam city and Kottarakkara town.
Kollam city - Kollam Techno Park distance may be 18 t0 20 Kms maximum
Kottarakkara - Kollam Techno Park distance may be 17 to 19 Kms maximum.
Hence, the development of IT Park in Kundara will help Kottarakkara also. The entire Kollam - Kottarakkara NH 208 has to be made a good 4-line. Moreover, Kottiyam - Kundara - Karunagapllay 4-lane also bring Karunagapally and Paripally also closer to Kundara IT park.
As Kottarakkara - Aranmula Airport site location is mere 45 Kms, an IT park coming in the vicinity of Kottarakkara is going to do a lot of development fillip to the growing town.

Good to see three MNCs in the list. A real good start.
Reghu March 13th, 2013, 07:47 AM That's a good start indeed. But the important question is whether the company is big or small...when would the first one becomes operational.
The big thing is first company becoming function. If that happens this year...others will follow suit and we may hear some great news by 2015:).

Revenue Med will contribute some good numbers. The park will be operational by this year end, and I hope by end of 2014, we will see around 1000 IT/ITES professionals walking through the the streets of Kundara.
Reghu March 13th, 2013, 10:45 AM Yes..Robin...a start is needed now. Once picked up the way of life and the attitude of people to work culture also will change for sure.
Just waiting to see the company cabs plying through the Kundara - Kollam, Kundara - Kottarkkara, Kundara - Karunagaplly as well as Kundara - Chathanoor route

3. Captech - UK based - Enterprise mobile applications
Reghu March 17th, 2013, 09:29 AM Robin, what is general perception of TVM Techno Park companies and employees on Kollam Techno Park?
What is their thoughts on the prospects of Kollam IT Park?
Do any of the major established IT companies in TVM Techno Park have extension plans in Kollam IT Park?
What is the perception of Kollam based employees in TVM Techno Park on Kollam IT Park? We know there are employees with attitude of Anikuttan.
My friends in Bangalore are very happy and excited as an IT Park has started atleast by the name sake. They are not so bothered now if there is an Infosys or an IBM coming up. If it comes up it is great. They want to see the park growing steadily, slowly, and healthly turning the so called rural IT park to an urban IT park.
They all have decent hopes on our IT park.:)

I don't think I can comment about what employees are thinking or what other businesses are thinking. Whatever little interaction I had with TP community about this topic, my thinking is they generally welcome the Technopark in Kollam district... but are bit negative about the choice of location. They would have preferred an IT park in NH itself. Already there seems to be some action from private players in that direction. So Kundara TP may end up in oblivion... thats what my brain says... but my mind wants Kundara TP to grow. You know the reason, I guess. :)
Reghu March 19th, 2013, 08:24 AM Have they identified any location for that like Kollam Bypass or Kottiyam - Chathanoor stretch? I mean the private players.
But what we are going to do with investment made at Kundara? Can it be used for other industries such as electronics, mechanical, and component industries?

I hope Kundara TP will transform to a startup incubator. It's an ideal location for such a facility.
Regarding pvt players, I have only vague information. Not even sure who is behind that. I hope its RP group.
robin_a_p March 19th, 2013, 08:33 AM ^^ adding to the above point. much depends on the political will.
Reghu March 19th, 2013, 10:37 AM Yes...political will is more important. I do not think it is there now. May be ita may come back after 3 years.
Yes..RP has plans but I assume he has plans for a incubator kind of project. Not sure if it is in Kundara IT park.
But Robin, I have high hopes on Kundara IT park if not now but down the lane may be 5 to 6 or even 10 years later. Yes time is precious but it always get delayed whenever something is planned for Kollam.
Anyway, every one is looking at RP for everything. He is only businessman who can do anything substancial!

Kollam and Trivandrum are very tightly coupled. Within few years, Trivandrum metro region is going to merge to Kollam UA. It is not that far. So, Kollam TP will grow for sure. Problem is the marketing side of technopark, being a govt establishment , there seems to be certain limitations. We need more business/IT establishments on NH between Attingal and Kollam so that it will be connected faster. It really helps, I think.
Reghu March 21st, 2013, 02:50 AM But the growth of TVM is not impacting Kollam currently. In ther case of Trissur, Kochi's impact has filliped the development atleast in bringing more investment in non-IT sectors.
Also, it depends on various aspects. Culture also matters. Anyway, irrespective of any merged U/A or not...Kollam has its own identity and defintely has bright prospects in future.

Of course, every place has its own identity. What are the bright prospects for Kollam? My place is close to Kollam.
Reghu March 21st, 2013, 04:13 AM Tourism, Port related business Cashew Hub with Cashew Board, more industries in Chavara, Educational & Health care sector and ofcourse IT but it IT will take time in the Kerala context. Still people prefer to work in cities like Bangaore because of the better exposure and salary.
If you look at the north and south extremes of Kollam. Paripally in the south end of Kollam is going to leap forward with one of the biggest medical colleges in Kerala - The ESI Medical college. More educational and hospitals are expected in the Thattmala - Chathanoor - Paripally stretch. Ofcourse IT has good prospects in this stretch. Hope RP will take some initiative and others will folloe later may be it takes time.
North Kerala will definetly will become an education hub for higher education due to Amrithapuri Campus. Chavara industril area has lot of land (land used for mineral extraction) and can be used for other industries in future. Maritime Instite, IIIC, Fibre Park etc are the latest developments coming up in North Kollam.
Yes Kollam has its unique things for development. But we need other developments in the form of IT, higher research institutions, central government offices and big commercial establishements.
Of course, every place has its own identity. What are the bright prospects for Kollam? My place is close to Kollam.

Reghu April 17th, 2013, 05:57 PM Mini IT parks to be set up in all districts
In a bid to support hundreds of small and medium scale IT firms, the Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) is setting up IT Parks across the state with private participation.
SIDCO, a state public sector unit, has invited expression of interest (EoI) from private parties with minimum one acre land to set up the IT parks in the Public Private Partnership model. “We are planning to set up mini IT parks in one to two acres of land in order to support small and medium IT companies, both in the software and hardware sectors,” said SIDCO managing director Saji Basheer.
At present, there are hundreds of software and hardware firms with turnovers ranging upto Rs 50 lakh. Getting space in any major IT park like the Technopark or Infopark would not be affordable to these firms. Hence, the mini IT parks to be set up by SIDCO would be a viable option for these units.
“We have invited EoI from private parties with minimum one acre land for setting up the parks. Subject to the availability of land, even more than one IT park would be set up in a district,” said Basheer.
At present, the business done by the small and medium software units in the unorganised sectors did not reflect on the IT export figures presented by the government. Once these units become a part of an IT park, it would be easy for the state to compile the export figures from these units with the state's total software export figures.

In what way you say that Thrissur has impact of Kochi? the only business concern of Kochi in Thrissur is Jayalakshmi. Ofcourse the facilities of port , CIAL has impact. Keeping them a side , there is no business concerns of Kochi in thrissur. Thrissur has the investments from Thrissur mainly. The other business investment is coming from Malabar in the retail as well as land .
On the contrary , In Kochi there are a lot of investments from Thrissur.
