Pour commencer, une ville dont on n'entend pas parler souvent mais qui ces dernières années a subit des changements radicaux surtout en matière de grattes-ciel et de gros projets d'architecture.
Almaty (Алматы : ville des pommes) est la principale ville du Kazakhstan, avec 1 420 747 d'habitants (2009) et une superficie de 325 km² environ (soit 4 372 hab/km²). L'ancien nom Alma-Ata (Алма-ата) signifiait « Grand-père-pomme », car il y a d'importants vergers dans les environs.

Aedas’ architectural designs for the Almaty Sofitel Hotel are progressing and the practice has announced further expansion in the CIS region with the launch of its Astana office.

Norman Foster’s Almaty Twin Towers in Kazakhsta
World-renowned architect Sir Norman Foster seems to be making a lot of friends in the former Soviet Union, with news of new Foster design proposals in Russia and Central Asia being approved almost every month. Kazakhstan’s capital city Astana already features two Foster designed marvels: a stunning Palace of Peace and Reconciliation pyramid structure and another tent-like development called Khan Shatyry Entertainment Centre soon to be completed late next year. Now, if plans are approved, Kazakhstan will soon see the development of two gigantic twin towers in Almaty, thanks to the iconic British architect.

La filiale ingénierie d’Aéroports de Paris, ADPi, a posé mercredi la première pierre d’un nouveau terminal de l'aéroport international d'Almaty au Kazakhstan. Futuriste et très originale, l’architecture de l’édifice rappelle les yourtes, tentes traditionnelles des nomades d'Asie centrale.
