btw sorry to sound stupid but where is Dalian?

China. The city is famous for its large port, and also for its enormous furniture industry. In fact, I believe that it is the largest producer of furniture in the World (also housewares, glassware, etc). Dalian also has a VERY large conference center that is used by these vendors for thier trade shows. I wish that someone had some pics of it, but such pics should really be posted outside of the ROT forum...

As for the Dalian WTC, I think that it is a very nice looking building, which blends Western and Eastern influences well.

I gave it a high score of 8.5/10 because there's something about the building that I really like.

Looks like they use it for 101 reasons LOL. I think most of the bulk is aesthetic.

Like the tower section but what about the "let's get busy" spire? Interesting mix of materials. The glass ediface is the nicest aspect for moi.

Garish blues 'n pinks at night make it so very pretty, pretty.

Nice from all angles except the back. Reminds me a little of the Wisma46 building in Jakarta.

8.5/10 I like the blue glass and the warm stone cladding on the other side. Dalian has some other nice high rises as well, it's a shame 4 of the next tallest are empty (the facades are complete but the interiors are not).

7/10 - The tower soars nicely, I like the glass in the facade, and the glass and stone are combined well. But the stone could have better detailing with more vertical emphasis, and the tower should rise from the center of the base, not from the back edge; somehow that throws the whole shape out of whack.

9/10. I like it!

I really dig this building, quite a sharp looking structure. Just hard to identify exactly what I like the most about it. Perhaps it's the whole 'package.' 8.5.

usually these dual facade buildings don't work too well but this one pulls it off nicely....the setbacks help alot and the whole building seems to peak at the spire which looks great at night...
the horizontal banding & the 2 vertical colums on the glass facade ties it into the rest of the design and gives the impression of a soaring tower....what a nice surprise!...8.5/10

I like the all-glass side, but the concrete side makes it look cheap.

I like that those 2 lines go from the spire to the top bottom

The two sides hardly relate to eachother.....really looks like two buildings for the price of one.

Somehow, I just don't like this building.. The spire is really out of place.. Dosen't fit this building well >( The facade is not really good also.. Don't like how the blue glass mixes with the white cladding.. :rant:

the contrast between glass and masonry's amazing. dalian truly have amazing skyscrapers (even though many of the tall ones are unoccupied).

It's a respectable tower. I'm not sure about the final spire but it wouldn't look any better w/out it either.

Nice building, but the mixing of facades is kind of ugly. I give it a 7/10.

I like the contrast between the two sides of the building, although I don't really like the small windows on the back. The crown is superb and adds nicely to the height impression. The side elevation is definitely very elegant. Except for the change of color near the podium :-/

IMO, if Chinese architects want to experiment with garbage designs, they should do it on computers.

I know China is very backward when it comes to computer simulation technology; but both the hardwares and softwares are readily available in the West. They may be expensive but I'm sure they aren't nearly as expensive as these garbage buildings that are creeping up across China.

These ridiculous designs might have something to do with multiple personality disorder.

I suspect most Chinese architects (in fact, most Chinese) have varying degrees of multiple personality disorders, probably due to physical, verbal and mental abuse by parents, a rampant phenomenon in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong etc (i.e. countries or regions populated by Chinese).
