Finally it happens - this has been expected since a very long time. I'd congratulate the government for keeping the ordinary fares low, so that short distance commuters are not pinched.

A comparo between the Southern States:

TN fares are as above - a recap:
Ordinary: 42 ps/km
Mofussil (Express??): 56ps/km
SD: 60ps/km
UD: 70ps/km.

Andhra Pradesh Fares: (According to news reports - last hike on July 15, 2011)

Palle Valugu (Ordinary): 50ps/km
Express: 62 ps/km
Deluxe: 70 ps/km
Super Luxure: 82 ps/km
Garuda (Volvo): 140ps/km

Pondicherry Fares: (Based on GOs issued on 08.11.2008 and 03.05.2010)

Express: 27 ps/km
Deluxe: 75 ps/km
Deluxe AC: 150ps/km

SO TN continues to have the lowest fares.

Thanks for the list. Is it not pondy then on express route?

I did not understand your question. According to the Pondy Government Website (their GO issued in 2008), they have one fare for Ordy and Express services. Ordinary buses have low minimum fare compared to Express - thats the only difference I could find out. Both buses will charge 27ps/km according to the GO.

My Q was for this quote "SO TN continues to have the lowest fares."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

After this hike, there should some surplus fund or break even point for the transport sector, as said by Dhandapani they should set 4.5KMPL from 6KMPL so the speed can be increased and running time can be reduced.

Oh! Ok. I stand corrected. But I think that will not remain for long - if you notice, Pondy is already charging realistic fares for their "premium" services. With TN also increasing rates, Pondy will be doing it soon as well.

but we have to wait and see whether the revenue from the bus fare hike will be used for transport dept improvement or for freebies.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

b/w it is bonaza for many private short distance operators especially on the sectors like CBE-Tiruppur, CBE-MTP, Erode-Salem, Madurai-Dindigul etc., Already they are running the bus in profit, this fare hike will give huge profit for them.

Super Fast/Express: 60ps/km
Super Express: 65ps/km
I remember Parasuram travels using super fast permit. But I was told /km fare will be 65p and min in Rs.10. Is this wrong use of terminology?

Volvo: Fares are left to the STU to decide, based on revenue/demand
(I think Rajahamsa comes in the Hitech category, and Vaibhav in the Super Deluxe category).

any guestimate for Volvo and Multi axle?

Andhra Pradesh Fares: (According to news reports - last hike on July 15, 2011)

what about AC coaches - Indira?
Garuda plus (MB Multi axle): 150 p/km

They are overcharging. They have a "Super Fast" Permit and hence they should charge only 60 ps/km, with Minimum fare of Rs. 10. (Its Rs. 10 upto 10kms, then 60 ps/km. So for 11 kms, the fare would be 10+0.60 = 10.60, rounded off to Rs. 12. KeSRTC would charge an additional Re. 1 as Insurance Cess as well, above 50kms only, AFAIK).

any guestimate for Volvo and Multi axle?

For Karnataka, the operator i.e., KaSRTC, is free to fix their own rates per km. I am trying to find out how much do they charge per km outside Karnataka.

what about AC coaches - Indira?
Garuda plus (MB Multi axle): 150 p/km

Indra - There is conflicting information. They say it would be between Super Luxury and Garuda. It is claimed to be 100ps/km or 120ps/km. No concrete information.

Thanks for the rate of Garuda Plus.

CHENNAI, NOV 17:

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/multimedia/dynamic/00839/bus2_839187f.jpg

The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to hike the minimum bus fare in metros other than Chennai to Rs 3 from Rs 2, and the maximum to Rs 12 from Rs 7.

The minimum fare for long-distance mofussil buses has been increased to 42 paise/km from 28; for semi-deluxe it will be 56 paise from 32 paise. For super-deluxe and luxury Volvo buses, the fare has been increased to 60 paise from 52 and for ultra-deluxe, the Government has decided to increase it to 70 paise from the present 52.

Justifying the increase, the Tamil Nadu Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, said that diesel price, which was Rs 18.26 a litre in 2001, today costs Rs 43.95. Further, the cost of tyre and tube, and wages to employees has increased significantly. Due to these factors, Government Transport Corporations incurred a loss of Rs 6,150 crore for the fiscal ended March 31, 2011.

The situation has worsened to the extent that the Government Transport Corporations could end up in bankruptcy. Every month the Government, in fact, has been paying Rs 60 crore as financial assistance for providing wages to employees. If action is not taken now, the Government may not be in a position to run the buses, she said in a statement.

The Policy Note on the State Transport Department for the year 2011-2012 said that the eight State Transport Undertakings with a fleet strength of 21,169 carried nearly 2.10 crore passengers every day. In Chennai metropolitan alone, nearly 55 lakh passengers travel in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses.

FARE STRUCTURE

When compared to other southern states, the fare per km in Tamil Nadu was the lowest. The existing fare structure for mofussil services in Tamil Nadu with comparative figures of neighbouring States is given in the table.

The fare in Tamil Nadu has not been revised since December 2001 in the interest of the travelling public, though diesel cost and establishment costs have increased several times.

The oil companies periodically revise the price of petroleum products depending upon global market prices. High-speed diesel price has been increased 138 per cent since last the revision of bus fare in 2001. The State Transport Undertakings are incurring about 44 per cent of the total revenue towards diesel cost. The expenditure on consumption of diesel for the State Transport Undertakings was Rs 2,468 crore in 2010-11.

In addition to bus fares, the Tamil Nadu Government has also announced a steep increase in the price of milk supplied by Aavin. The price of toned milk will be revised to Rs 24 a litre from the current Rs 17.75. Correspondingly, the procurement price of milk paid to dairy farmers too has been raised from Rs 18 to Rs 20 a litre for cow's milk and Rs 26 to Rs 28 a litre for buffalo milk.

There is some interesting facts here:

The Hindu claims that the fare for Ordinary services in Karnataka is only 43 paise, while the Government Order issued by the Government of Karnataka on 03.11.2010 states that the fares charged by Ordinary services (other than City buses) is 65 paise per km!

Similarly, The Hindu says the fares for Semi-Deluxe is only 65.70ps, while the GO says its 75 ps/km. Hindu says the fares for Super Deluxe is only 80 paise while the GO says its 100ps/km!

So, I am confused - whom to believe? The Hindu or the GO?

Minimum fare in city bus Rs.2 --> Rs.3---->50% increase
UD Fare: 52 paise --> 70 paise------------>approx 35% increase
Normal Fare: 28 paise --> 42 paise-------->50% increase
Mofussil Fare: 32 paise --> 56 paise-------->75% increase.

Looks to be very huge hike!!
this should be condemned, i thought it would be moderate.

She did after local body elections and lok sabha election is still 2 yrs from now..
so she did that steep rise to bring back transport dept glory.
she might reduce the fare on Jan 01, 2014 as New year gift...also for LS election..

The below data is cumulative and not for specific last year alone. Most of the times Hindu will be on DOT with such stats and mostly use the gvt or politicians spelled figures.

I guess the below figures is from yesterday CM/Ministrical meeting. So it should be correct.

Due to these factors, Government Transport Corporations incurred a loss of Rs 6,150 crore for the fiscal ended March 31, 2011

crossposting as it is regarding mofusil routes

Just because you are used to paying unrealistically low fares, its unfair to say this fare hike is not digestable.

Here, people are paying Rs. 500 for a 720km journey (Kottarakkara to Kollur) in a 3x2 Express bus. Similarly people are paying Rs. 350 for a 500 kms journey in Karnataka (Bangalore to Belgaum) and so on.

but what is the journey time?

TNSTC is known for its long running time when other STC has considerably reduced their running time after 4-laning and adjusting their KMPL target.

If TNSTC express mofusil can do the four simple facts, the fare hike can be accepted.

1. Decreasing the running time of mofusil express bus
2. Not dumping the standees from via towns (this is happening in most of the express mofusil 3*2 buses). This is one of the reason why passenger transported per bus stands high in case of TN compared to other states.
3. Stopping in decent motels
4. Crew response.

It is well known all TNSTC lags much behind compared to other STC in these 4points. The fare hike should have come with these 4 points. But the greedy oppicers will not implement this and also the top management/minster will also know about these facts.

I don't think so looking at the tenders for new SETC especially. Hope you might have seen the comments of long distance travelers about new 12M chasis buses in this very forum. And 500 such buses are going to be procured.

And also look up the 4 points that I have mentioned above.

^^

Having said this, we can expect some below comments/critics in the same thread in coming days.

"fare of SETC is on par or quiet less with other STC like KeSRTC, KASRTC rajamhsa, airwada, APSRTC garuda, etc., but the SETC bus is pathetic, running time is very high, poor crew response, no specials etc.,"

"xyz STC is introducing Volvo, Benz, ibus but SETC is not introducing inspite of huge fare hike..." even if gets introduced Volvo looking after SETC maintenance will ban TN STC procuring volvo buses.

I do agree we cannot judge now and have to wait-see the improvements and it cannot happen over night. But I have no optimistic view on this transport dept undertaking management as it is on par with Indian railways management i.e erumai mattu mela mazhai pencha mathiri.

standees are allowed even in U.D buses. Only in mofusil AC buses I have not seen standees. But that is common on Volvo running to Hosur, Vellore, Pondy and Trichy.

When we pay huge fare, this standees should be banned. It is for ordinary routes like city buses or short distance mofusil buses. Many express bus runs with standees especially on sat, sun and fri.

Few questions raised on why it cannot be Rs 6,150 cr. I doubt based on the following CAG findings of losses :

Heavy losses were incurred by Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai) Limited (Rs 166.47 crore), Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Coimbatore) Limited (Rs 141.42 crore) and State Express Transport Corporation Limited (Rs 100.82 crore).

Source: (http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/cag-finds-one-in-three-psus-in-losses-in-tamil-nadu/449129/)

CAG has quoted the heavy hitters in terms of losses, if this case is taken the highest is 166cr... so going be these numbers, it can be only 1,005cr and not Rs6,150cr. I will see if i can fish out the entire CAG report (latest one) on TN transport corporations.

The news item released by the "The Hindu" is wrong is my contention. Clearly its says Rs6,150 loss for the fiscal ending in Mar2011.

whereas Dinamlar says "இதனால், போக்குவரத்துக் கழகங்களின் ஒட்டுமொத்த கடன், 6,150 கோடி ரூபாயாக உயர்ந்துவிட்டது."

There is a difference between talking about fiscal and cummulative. Thats my point. One more thing is that The Hindu calls it "Loss" and Dinamalar calls it "loan". That is another problem, shows the poor PR of SG.

Defenitely CAG report what i quoted is for 2010-2011 fiscal only and here we are talking of one fiscal only i.e 2011 - 2011.

Steep increase in bus fares, power tariff, milk prices

State expects to raise additional revenue of Rs. 10,000 crore annually

Aimed at mopping up additional annual revenue of over Rs. 10,000 crore, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday announced her government's nod for the hike in bus fares, power tariff and milk prices. She made the announcement after chairing an hour-long meeting of the Cabinet at Fort St. George.

In her address televised on a private channel, a transcript of which was later released to other media, she dwelt at length on the present financial health of the organisations concerned - Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), a successor entity of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB); State Transport Corporations and the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation (‘Aavin'). “If these public sector undertakings, lying on death bed, are not given ‘oxygen' now, they will become totally dysfunctional,” she said.

Sources say that the increase in the power tariff is, on an average, expected to be Rs.1.50 per unit for different sections of consumers. It will fetch Rs.8,000 crore in a year to the cash-starved power utility. The previous power tariff hike was in August last year.

Referring to the State government's legal position on tariff determination, the Chief Minister said the government had no authority. The power utility would file a petition before the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC), which would hold public hearings before fixing the new tariff.

Ms. Jayalalithaa made it clear that agriculturists, weavers and those covered under the one-bulb scheme – hut dwellers – would continue to enjoy free power supply, for which the State government would provide subsidy to the TANGEDCO. Except for high-end consumers, other categories of domestic consumers would get government subsidy.

In respect of bus fares, the revision has been made after a gap of 10 years, the previous instance being in December 2001. The per km ticket price of ordinary mofussil buses would go up from 28 paise to 42 paise; express and semi-deluxe buses - 32 paise to 56 paise; super deluxe - 38 paise to 60 paise and ultra deluxe - 52 paise to 70 paise.

The minimum bus ticket price in urban areas other than Chennai would go up from Rs. 2 to Rs. 3 and the maximum would be Rs. 12 instead of Rs. 7. In Chennai too, the minimum fare would go up to Rs. 3 and the maximum would be Rs. 14 against Rs. 12.

State Transport Corporations, whose total losses for the current financial year are estimated to touch around Rs. 2,200 crore by the end of the current financial year, would get an additional revenue of around Rs. 2,100 crore in a year. Taking into account the prevailing factors, the Corporations are likely to achieve break-even. As on March 31 this year, their accumulated losses stood at Rs. 6,150 crore.

As regards the dairy sector, the price of toned milk per litre would be revised from Rs. 17.75 to Rs. 24. The last increase was made in September 2009. The procurement price of milk paid to dairy farmers would go up from Rs.18 to Rs. 20 per litre for cow milk and from Rs. 26 to Rs. 28 for buffalo milk.

Even after the revision, the bus fares and the milk price would be lower than those in other southern States, Ms. Jayalalithaa pointed out.

The manner in which the announcement was made was itself a novelty as Ms Jayalalithaa used Jaya TV to announce her government's decisions around 3:30 p.m. Minutes later, the government released the text of her address to the media

standees are allowed even in U.D buses.

Most of the standees in long distance buses are short distance travelers. The number of end to end standees on long distance buses will be very little or null. For example, Namakkal bound pax from Salem are tend to board buses bound for Trichy/Madurai as they will not stop in smaller towns between Salem and Namakkal. But, Salem - Namakkal buses will stop in several intermediate stops.

But these should not be encouraged, and the crew should make sure there are no such short distance travellers.

Also, lack of direct services from intermediate stops is another reason for standees in long distance buses. For example, there are no direct buses from Namakkal to Madurai. So pax from Namakkal bound for Madurai have to board the bus standing, hoping to get a seat in Karur or Dindigul.

The department should identify the demand from such small towns, and introduce buses like Namakkal - Madurai, Pedundurai - Coimbatore, Attur - Chennai etc.

Without such services, we cannot completely avoid standees in long distance buses.

Nov17, Dinamani (http://www.dinamani.com/edition/story.aspx?&SectionName=Tamilnadu&artid=508718&SectionID=129&MainSectionID=129&SEO=&Title=)

http://www.dinamani.com/images/july11/fare.jpg

Dinamani has compard the latest bus fares with SL fares on IR (they are too low is another story which the paper has forgotten)
---------------

Now passengers like MDU-SCT, TEN-ED, NCG-CBE etc will have some additional patronage.
Good that the paper did not compare IR passenger train fares with buses on that route...should have sounded funny.

A comparision between Parveen travels and SETC (Bangalore to chennai)
Yesterday i booked a ticket in Parveen travels NON AC bus from Bangalore to Chennai
and today i check the rate for SETC non AC.

Parveen Non AC Airbus :
Online ticket fare is Rs 389.50
Good quality bus
Run time 6.30 hours

SETC UD :
Online ticket fare is Rs 363
Old and unmaintained bus
Running time 7:30 to 8 hours

The price difference is less than Rs 30 for a comfortable travel.

I hope the government justifies the ticket hike by improving the quality of buses and Staff behavior.

Lets wait and watch.

Is somebody aware of such less ticket difference between SETC and Omni buses in any other routes?

Most of the routes is in similar condition.

UD buses are nearing non-AC fare of omni buses.
Ordinary 3*2 express bus have very less fare with U.D

Expecting improved punctuality, reduction in running time and good crew behavior itself a big Q. This can be achieved without much spending. But there would be no change in this for sure!

12 cities to get Metro rail soon

NEW DELHI: Commuters in cities that have population of more than 20 lakhs can look forward to more comfortable and safer rides, if state governments are willing to opt for modern Metro network for intra-city travel.

The Union urban development ministry has decided to consider the proposal for Metro in Tier II cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Indore, Nagpur, Kochi, Coimbatore, Kozhikode. The Metro fever is catching up in smaller cities, thanks largely to the success of Delhi Metro. Cities like Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Bhopal are making a case for Metro, even though they don't qualify because of the population cut-off.

Jaipur is likely to be the first Tier-II city to get the swanky mode of transportation as the state government has agreed to bear Rs 1,250 crore for the 9.25-km stretch under Stage I. However, the Rajasthan government has sought Centre's approval for viability gap funding for stage II - a 25.91-km stretch between Ambabari to Sitapura via SMS hospital - that is estimated to cost Rs 7,700 crore.

Kochi has also jumped on the bandwagon. The UD ministry will soon seek the Cabinet's nod for the project: a 25.3-km stretch, extending between Alwaye to Petta, to be built at a cost of Rs 4,722 crore.

Ludhiana, Pune, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have got detailed project report (DPR) for metro projects prepared from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), while DPRs for Indore, Bhopal and Chandigarh is being prepared.

The ministry seems keen to run Metro in Nagpur as UD minister Kamal Nath has written to Maharastra chief minister Ashok Chavan, asking him to get a DPR for the Orange City prepared.

Though Kanpur, Patna, Surat, Coimbatore and Kozhikode make the grade for Tier-II cities, they are lagging behind in availing of the Centre's offer. "If state governments come with the proposal for Metro Rail in cities with 20 lakh plus population, the ministry is ready to consider," Nath said.

The ministry has decided to bear 50% of the cost of the preparation of DPR for cities that come under the population cut-off bracket. Among the 19 cities, which have more than 20 lakh population as per Census 2011, Metro projects are under different stages of implementation in four -Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Metro is running in the National Capital since 2006 on different routes, while Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is implementing Phase III of the project.

Mumbai has taken up metro projects-Line 1 (11.07 km), Line 2 (31.87 km) - on PPP model at an estimated cost of Rs 10,016 crore. For Line-3 (20.4 km Colaba-Mahim/Bandra corridor), which will cost about Rs 12,015 crore, it has opted for the DMRC model, to be funded by both the Centre and the state.

Kolkata Metro, which is the first one in the country, has taken up a new 14.67-km east-west corridor that will be implemented by railways. Chennai is implementing a 45.05-km project on the DMRC model.

Bangalore has become first city in south to have Metro after a 7-km stretch was commissioned in October. The city has already got the DPR ready for Phase II - a 72-km stretch that will cost about Rs 25,000 crore. Metro rail project in Hyderabad, covering 71 km, is being implemented on PPP mode.

There's only one reason -poor maintenance, if at all any maintenance exists! Omni buses use the same bus chassis (most of the non-AC and a fair share of AC buses are from Ashok Leyland). The bodies are built by the same Irizar-TVS, Prakash Coach, Veera etc. The SETC AC Bus in picture is built by Irizar-TVS, IIRC.

Private carriers know that people will pay extra (compared to UD fares) if the bus is more comfortable and reasonably fast. So, they maintain their buses well, to attract people as well as to make the most out of the bus.

Sadly the fares of Volvo buses in Chennai City has also been revised! The new Minimum fare is Rs. 15! Chennai finally overtakes Bangalore ;)

Damn! All this time I was cribbing about the "high" bus fares in Bangalore, after enjoying years of cheap bus travel in Chennai. And now, it's going to be the opposite :ohno:

But Binai, taking a rick in Chennai is suicidal, by way of the rates as well as road manners. It's just some random number that comes into the rick driver's mouth that he'll blurt out when we try to hire one. And, the bargain process begins. Oops, I missed the share autos though - perhaps they'll be cheaper than buses for short haul. Until this price hike, share auto fares used to be almost same as the Deluxe fares charged by MTC.

As per the new fare(42p) palani Madurai fare comes around 47 rs for 108km. But they are collecting rs64 which looks like a sd or exp fare..

Dear friends,

Express buses fares need clarity. Before the hike, 3x2 seater Express (just sticker) buses were collecting 5 or 10 Rs more than normal mofussil services. They were not collecting 32 paise per km rate I guess.

TNSTC is going deliberately aggressive on the price increase by jacking up the so-called Express services by nearly 80% which is very bad! There should not be such a steep increase in these 3x2 buses which have no change in fleet type or comfort level than normal mofussil services (now at 42 paise/km).

So, 3x2 seater Express services can be fixed at 10% more than mofussil services. Otherwise, keeping two rates 42 paise/km and 56 paise/km for the same (3x2) fleet will only help TNSTCs to cheat public by simply sticking 'Express' sticker and making 30% more revenue is not right.

Cheers,
Raj

Guys, i think i have experienced the effect of the fare increase in Tamilnadu. The changes i have noted are:

1. Most of the TNSTCs have updated it in their ETVMs. Rs 14 was collected from Thiruvanmyiur to CMBT.
2. TNSTC VPMs, which are one of the slowest - going just at 70 kmph in GST Road, are really speeding up. (One TNSTC VPM to Salem, infact overtook the PRTC bus which i came in via GST Road).
3. I saw two SETCs competing with the PRTC bus i came in, from Perungalathur till Tindivanam.

I think the speed restriction has been lifted.

dr_thapalathy
November 19th, 2011, 11:08 AM
Atleast now, TN STUs must implement the following things:

1. TNSTCs must increase the frequency of Normal buses and decrease the frequency of Express buses, so that the tag EXPRESS makes a meaning. The EXPRESS tag was really useful when i saw it for the first time in 2002-03 when i used it between Chennai and Pondy. Now, the special buses will add up to the revenue of TNSTCs, instead of eating them up.

2. MTC must cut down all M Services, LSS and Express Tags. They must have only Ordinary - White Board and Delux - Blue Board. I hope, MTC will start breaking even from the next year and the Volvos will start running in profit.

3. SETCs must remove atleast the Speed Restriction in their buses, if not the Bed Bugs.

dr_thapalathy
November 19th, 2011, 11:12 AM
As i read in the previous posts, that standees must not be allowed in EXPRESS Buses, i beg to differ here:

EXPRESS buses can allow standees, but should crater to only the END - END passengers and not the intermediate passengers. For eg, an TNSTC EXPRESS bus, moving from Chennai to Pondy, can have the seats filled for Pondy and Tindivanam and can even allow standees to these places, apart from having standees to Melmaruvathur, which is a stopping in the GST Road itself. They should not go inside any town, deviating from the main GST Road.

NORMAL buses must crater to the in-between towns. They must enter Chengalpet, Maduranthagam and also the two towns in-between Pondy and Tindivanam.

Kerala fares:
Ordinary/City Ordinary: 55ps/km
Fast Passenger/City Fast: 57ps/km
Super Fast/Express: 60ps/km
Super Express: 65ps/km
Super Deluxe: 75ps/km
AC: 90ps/km
Volvo: 110ps/km
City Low Floor Non-AC: 75ps/km
City Low Floor AC: 150ps/km

Karnataka Fares: (Official GO on fares is not available. SO the fares are based on old GO, and the recent fare increase was added to the old rates - so the rates are only approximate)
Ordinary (except City/Town services): 69ps/km
Express: 75ps/km
Semi-Deluxe: 80ps/km
Super Deluxe: 107ps/km
Hitech: 117ps/km
Volvo: Fares are left to the STU to decide, based on revenue/demand
(I think Rajahamsa comes in the Hitech category, and Vaibhav in the Super Deluxe category).

Andhra Pradesh Fares: (According to news reports - last hike on July 15, 2011)

Palle Valugu (Ordinary): 50ps/km
Express: 62 ps/km
Deluxe: 70 ps/km
Super Luxure: 82 ps/km
Garuda (Volvo): 140ps/km

Pondicherry Fares: (Based on GOs issued on 08.11.2008 and 03.05.2010)

Express: 27 ps/km
Deluxe: 75 ps/km
Deluxe AC: 150ps/km

Though Not in the South,

Maharashtra Fares:
Ordinary/Express: 0.80 ps/km
Night Express: 0.93 ps/km
Semi-Luxury: 107 ps/km
AC Sheetal: 142 ps/km
AC Shivneri: 198 ps/km

There is no specific information about fares in Goa!

SO TN continues to have the lowest fares.

I request dhandapani and binai to have this comparision on their respective blogs

Also the city fares for rest of TN, chennai fares, volvo fares and delux, oridnary split up dhandapani posted. This will help.

Getting pissed with over the blown talk that this is too much of an increase. Increase is too much only in volvo fares in chennai and daily passes.

Even daily pass, get on to 4 deluxe buses - min charge is 28. with so many connection, it will still be profitable is my guess.

On service ofn TNSTC, speed and modern fleet, it will take a years time to see changes.

Already we are seeing makeovers for many new but made dabba in 2 years buses. A ppp body buulding is proposed. Spares are being bought. Some 3000 buses being bought, SETC seeing major makeover in terms of maintenance and new fleet addition.

All this is shore up cash flow. Without having a decent cash flow none of it can be achieved. so will take time to achieve. A sick unit cant be overturned in a months time.

And we have the unions of drivers, conductors, other staff coming in this as well. There will be some resistance, some wont work citing unions. Its an uphill task.

For next 1 year here must be a moratorium on further permits for omni buses and I really really hope omni buses jack up the rates to a good high.

Else idea of hiking fares without improving service can backfire. its a dicey situation.

unlike other rtc, tnstc don't have any proper definition for express or ordinary tag. Thats is the main issue!!

most of the inter city routes b/w dt HQ (more than 100KM) have express tag, but enter into every small towns en-route what a town bus or ordinary bus is supposed to do.

everything is hope, hope and hope. ;) I just add one more hope with that... I hope that the cash flow doesn't goes to mafia gang and freebies.

tn transport network was one of the main reason for state's economic growth since economic liberalization. i.e it helped a lot in people's mobility for weekdays as well weekend. I only hope this network and transport dept doen't become history by killing it as much damage is done already.

Its very much atrocious...
Already the price is hike..
All the M services in 119, 119A series in MTC are converted as delux...
I paid extra 7 rupees( with MTC monthly pass) even for Velachery - Taramani route...
119, 119A is used by many poor people...
BTW the conductors in buses got many "good" words from people...
MTC looks less crowd in many buses.. Dunno whether it is rainy day effect or bus hike effect... :)
And the LSS services in 5G route converted as Express service...
I expected this government to raise fares transparently and remove all back door tactics introduced by the previous government. But they proved they are in no way different from previous party. Though the bold decision of bus fare revision came up openly, they had added so many back door tactics too in MTC.

I noticed express and deluxe buses in M7 and M119 routes. To my knowledge M119 had 2 deluxe buses operated by SP depot for sometime which were later made M service again. But M119 has express, deluxe now. M7 was entirely M & deluxe but had ADI029 (a dabba bus) today tagged as express. The highlight comedy is M1 which is one of short routes in MTC in Velachery area had seen express tag today . M15 also joined this list with DLX tag. All these buses have their normal white or M service board with express or DLX painted added above their route numbers.

It is really atrocious and I'm scared to walk out towards CMBT for TNSTC's tactics.:fiddle:
thanks

Arul,

Tell me havent you not seen any improvements? In this very forums we have pics of better cleaning, buses being redone, ac buses getting better care than before, online reservation being launched at good speed,e-ticketing machines scheme - arent these steps in right direction? ppp body building unti announced?

If there is one freebie she announced and hasnt implemented it is with regards to buses. reduced bus charge or free travel for elders and students for city or within town travel.

Please tell me how this move is killing transport department? If its higher than kerala I will accept. The killing will happen only if service dont impove, but signs are to opposite. There are good positive signs so far. Two more needed. Journey time and bed bugs issue.

I will give it time before reaching a decsion. If this is not set right in next 4 months along with indications in budget for modern buses induction for intercity, then I too will say the same. Now to conclude is a hurry and can only issue an alert

There were many new deluxe buses, jnnnurm which were not operated as SLF but as M and even ordinary. Then no one has a problem.

But now when an slf is operated as deluxe our forummer has a problem. We still have a healthy mix of slf and ordinary buses. The recent additions for like a year mostly have been ordinary buses and even now the 100 ordred are ordinary.

The real killer was years of neglect and not hiking it even moderately so far.

Transport department revenue cannot go to other sector freebies. only in transport sector. Looting can always happen.

It was already on death bed and looking good to die. Either this fare increase has to happen or you stop other freebies like zero rupee rice, mixie, grinder, laptop, goats so on.

Use that fund for this. Even if thats the case, may be transport sector and milk sector can be met. But not power sector.

Anyways modern 'world class' bars have been ordered to get more revenue. Already oppicers are in great hurry, scouting for locations.

China has cleverly manipulated its currency while we r doing opposite just t benfit few individuals.

Though this is for other than chennai, it will be more or less the same.

now lets see what ramesh had to say

To my knowledge M119 had 2 deluxe buses operated by SP depot for sometime which were later made M service again. But M119 has express, deluxe now

So originally it was had two deluxe. deluxe was being operated as M?

now they have partially made it deluxe and M. are non slf buses being operated as deluxe?

So whats wrong in it? they have only made it even better.

M service was flat rate charges right? based on what dhandapani has given express tag is 1.5 times. Green board express buses had long gone, now they are back. qn is in chennai does the lss category exist still? whats difference between lss, express?

Mostly fares of express and M will match. if all fares went up M fare too would have gone up right? now M has been removed. You just have M in front for namesake. M is just a route no now. Instead its called express.

so for first fes stages this is what express will mostly charge

Stage - ordFares exp fares(Rs)
1 - 3.00 4.5
2 - 4.00 6
3 - 4.00 6
4 - 4.00 6

6 - 6.00 9
7 - 6.00 9
8 - 7.00 10.5
9 - 7.00 10.5

now how is this not fair?
M service stand abolished repeat. only ordinary, lss, express, deluxe, volvo ac in chennai i think

In chennai max is 14

Chennai bus fare hiked by AIADMK govt, with no service guarantees

by Straphanger
Link (http://straphanger.wordpress.com/2011/11/17/chennai-bus-fare-hiked-by-aiadmk-govt-with-no-service-guarantees/)

I Agree this Subbu. But i dont know how many people from this community like this statement.

Now days the facility is very worst in SETC. I am seeing the posts in this community from the beginning they were not passengers friendly. Long ago i i posted the new SETC new SD sorry UD buses were very uncomfortable for sitting, but some people in this community were posted it was very comfortable. I dont know either that people never traveled in new SETC bus or they may brokers of private bus groups .

I didnt see any useful changes made in transport after the comments posted after here, If it happened means u can publish those at here. It ll be very effective and boost the users. or else the community will like a tamil proverb " KUNDU SADDILA KUTHIRAI ODDURATHU".

I am seeing some users in this community were have god names and they were always welcome and say YES for what ever the ruling party. They should stop posting comments like always say YES for all.

The govt (ruling and ruled parties) did not take care about the transports at any point of time. Especially SETC. Thats why the SETC is going like this. Earlier they told the transport will be handover to private. (I feel if it will be happened means definitely we will suffer. Their motivation should be their own growth not will be a service minded.) thats why the transport were not maintained and did not buy any new bused nor introduced new services. Next govt just bought the buses not maintained anything. Really this was the main reason for loss. At least the workshops should be handover to private companies. No one did that. I feel that scheme might not fill their pocket rather than new buses. I heard it 2 yrs back the extra fittings (lighting, and side mirror) contracts was handover to a transports minister's friend. But I agree the comfortable of 36 seating was very good maintenance was veryyy bad. Now days an young man charged over to the transport ministry. I thought he ll made that like old Thiruvalluvar.

At the beginning of his charge he visited many body built unit and released the press notes as he checked the comfortable of the buses and seating arrangements. He told the new buses will be designed very comfortable. After that a new SETC were running with most comfortable from 36 seats to 44 seats and the slope was also awesome. Finally i found his audit in the body building unit was excellent. If he ll runs this transport ministry like this means definitely the transport " YENGAIYO POIDUM"

So " YENTHA KOMBAN VANTHALUM NAAI VAALA NIMUTHA MUDIYATHU"

Arul,

Just noticed you have raised similar point in mtc thread. I knew you will come to that, thats why asked binai. lets wait for his reply

But the greedy oppicers will not implement this and also the top management/minster will also know about these facts.

between kerala ordinary is 55p. TN ordinary is 42P. So still TN is cheaper.

Kerala has another category - fast passenger - 57 p. our express category is 56p.

I think all these are 3*2 buses in kerala too

kerala express category is 60 p. our super deluxe is 60 p.

There is another category called super express. 65 p in kerala and their super deluxe is 75p(i think this is their UD version?)

TN ud is 70p.

Binai kindly request you to share the difference between various categories of kerala buses, in terms of seating arrangement, journey time, push back available? so on.

Thanks. That will help to put to rest a lot of things here.

trichy-Tanjore express bus fare is 31 Rs.
normally 70 EEP will be there.. so 2170 RS collected.
this route is now 4 laned and normally this route has very good TNSTC buses.they can easily achieve 4.5k KM/Diesel..
For fuel, it will be 500 Rs only.. rest 1600 Rs can be used for crew's salary, maintenance and part of profits can be spent to compensate loss making routes...

hm.. 31 Rs from Thanjavur to Trichy is just too much..
could anyone tell me how much is between Thanjavur-Kumbakonam, Thanjavur-Pattukottai.. these routes are also money Trees for Private buses..

Best time for pushing Trichy-Tanjore Doubling(train) and operate more passenger services..

Pls note that I'm neither against the fare hike nor against conversion of a normal/ M-serive to express/ dlx, why even an AC volvo. But my only question is why there are these many changes in a day or two? I don't know about you but for me, it appears a third rate back door tactics in addition to the front door fare hike across TN. Earlier govt. couldn't do it front door, so they permitted the regional MDs or even depot managers of TNS(E)TC's to do all back door tactics of converting many normal buses into M/express/deluxe in MTC and pseudo-express or collecting UD fare in regional TNSTC's SD's to keep STC's alive in bed atleast. Moreover, every TNSTC had fixed its own fare hike for any route coming under its territory. Can you tell me any moffussil route today which had the same fare right from May, 2005 till two days back? In addition, they have special rates on weekends and during crowded times.

I want all these to be stopped since they have made the hike in a very transparent manner. If that appears that I want all SLF buses to charge normal fares, sorry that's not my mistake.

Thanks

Krishnaswamy - tell me why rs 31 is too much? its a cool 60 km. assuming even if car mileage is 18 km, thats close to 3.4 ltrs of petrol.

Thats close to 240 rs. 5 in a bus will be 150. still its more cheap by bus.

This is express bus. you get an ordinary - it will be less at 42 p per km.

Only difference is in car u will reach soon. and if its diesel car even more. See binais post of rates in other states to arul, which i quoted and tell me why its over?

too much is the petrol diesel price, hence that of essential commodities, hence that of salries of govt employee. we were lucky all along to pay less fares.

Unless we do something with that dreaded rupee and some stupid schemes of central govt, this will continue.

1. Trichy- Tanjore has 1:5 ordinary-express buses... getting ordinary buses is difficult. do you think MDs of these transport corporations are stupids to run more ordinary buses in cash crop routes?
2. There is a cost associated for 5 people to travel to Thanjavur new bus stand. ticket fare from thanjavur old bus stand to Trichy is different.
3. There is a cost associated for people to move to their end locations from Trichy bus stand...
4. I have considered only 70 EEP passengers. but there are lot of intermediate passengers from Thanjavur, to Vallam, SASTRA, REC, BHEL, Tiruvermbur, Kattur, Palpannai... So buses are easily having carrying 100 people.
4. is it justifiable to keep the ticket cost very high, when the fuel cost is just 25% of it?

Arul,

Tell me havent you not seen any improvements? In this very forums we have pics of better cleaning, buses being redone, ac buses getting better care than before, online reservation being launched at good speed,e-ticketing machines scheme - arent these steps in right direction? ppp body building unti announced?

only e-ticket i would accept. Face lift of buses would have happened in due course, it is not done due to cm or transport minister direction. haven't we seen face lift of dabba buses in previous rule? it happens time to time. I remember our SRDF venkat comment... from 2002, SETC has proved his words. Even the recently face lifted buses will face the same fate in 1yr and in same forum we can see members posting 2011 and 2012 pic.

ppp plan we have to wait and see!! etho announce pannalum ethavathu scam irukumanu bayama irukku.

If there is one freebie she announced and hasnt implemented it is with regards to buses. reduced bus charge or free travel for elders and students for city or within town travel.

that has to be appreciated.. but even if implemented i don't think it is going to make huge expense! Anyway happy that she can stopped the dangerous trend that free travel in gvt buses in starting phase itself... because in 2016 election if dmk announce free travel for 60+ in rtc, then admk will announce free travel for all in rtc for rat race.

Please tell me how this move is killing transport department? If its higher than kerala I will accept. The killing will happen only if service dont impove, but signs are to opposite. There are good positive signs so far. Two more needed. Journey time and bed bugs issue.

For you it looks the rtc is moving is improving side, for me except e-ticket it is in same position. I said it will get killed if the bolded ones are not addressed asap especially for setc.

I will give it time before reaching a decsion. If this is not set right in next 4 months along with indications in budget for modern buses induction for intercity, then I too will say the same. Now to conclude is a hurry and can only issue an alert

yes... even I am not judging over night. If you have seen my post 2pages before, I have said the same. Things cannot happen over night, we have to wait and see.

I have lot of confusion on this classification on MTC, so no comments. But hope you might have seen my post on express tags which are really not fit for that.

The real killer was years of neglect and not hiking it even moderately so far.

Transport department revenue cannot go to other sector freebies. only in transport sector. Looting can always happen.

no.. anything can happen sir!

It was already on death bed and looking good to die. Either this fare increase has to happen or you stop other freebies like zero rupee rice, mixie, grinder, laptop, goats so on.

Use that fund for this. Even if thats the case, may be transport sector and milk sector can be met. But not power sector.

see thatha managed the sector because cost of spending on freebies was less in 2006-2011 compared to the proposed one from 2011 to 2016 because of tons of freebies by new gvt.

cost of spending on freebies directly proportional to bus, milk, electricity fare hike. Surely it will bring a feeling that old gvt was better thaan present gvt with this steeeeeeeeeep fare hike.

if the freebies cost was reduced and rise was moderate or step by step, people might have received this shock in different way.

Anyways modern 'world class' bars have been ordered to get more revenue. Already oppicers are in great hurry, scouting for locations.

one is coming up in velacherry... we should ask them to open one at siruseri.. appo thaan chennai is like B city nu silla pugal padigaluku nammalum sollalam...

China has cleverly manipulated its currency while we r doing opposite just t benfit few individuals.

we opened this topic, didn't discuss much... can you mail some good link about this so that i can understand why our currency is at 50 and their's at 6.3!!

I beg to differ from you on this. There have been positive signs since the rule change happened.

These things never happened in the previous rule and never would have happened if that rule had continued.

I seriously don't understand what makes you to be this pessimistic after the fare hike.

We are forgetting the fact that, we are still having the lowest fare structure in the country.

Also, I don't see a reason why the additional revenue will be used for freebies, when the Transport corporations themselves have a deep financial crisis. We can see that happening if these fare hikes will result in a huge profit. But this hike is just going to compensate the loss incurred in the previous years, and to meet the Transport Corporations' own financial needs.

We are also seeing indications of the KMPL targets being revised etc.

It is very premature to come to a conclusion that the quality of the services will not improve and that public will get a naamam, within few days after the hike.

Let us wait for a couple of month before making such comments.

Ramesh,

M service stands abolished. So obvious that M will be converted to express or deluxe if M was operated with an slf bus. Thats it to it.It is a new update for me, thanks for it.

But may I know why MTC will move its M-service buses either to express or deluxe only and no normal services? In M119 & M119A, almost all the buses were old SLF's from 21H & 21L, 519 of AD depot. If these are all converted straightaway to DLX or even express, how will a person from IGP reach places in M119 route from SRP tools till Guindy? He has to take a normal bus (pls note, other than white boards & M-services, no bus will stop here) till SRP tools and change over to some other bus. Since there are no white boards in the entire stretch between SRP tools - Perungudi except M-services that have been re-classified now, how will these people reach SRP tools or even Kandanchavadi?

M-service removal is good, but that should have been in a way that there are many normal buses and then add whatever higher category buses you feel that route can fill in. Simply re-classifying every M-service bus to express/ deluxe creates 2 problems to any passenger here.

-> You are being forced to shell out express/ deluxe fare since there are no normal services or they are rare.
-> Consider the plight of bus stops that were being served by normal & M-services only. What do you have for them now? Will you make all the express/ deluxe converted m-services still stop at those bus stops or you will place a board at the bus stop saying that it is removed by MTC?

In case of M119 & M119A, the best way would have been to move few SLF's to other routes for real DLX or express services and make normal fleet to be the maximum. Let few of existing SLF's (which are currently operated as M-service) be converted as dlx and express services. Even here, it should be ensured that passenger chooses a normal/ express/ deluxe and not the MTC pushing them towards express/ dlx by making these buses bunched together one behind the other, particularly during peak hours. Without such a proper planning for normal buses too, the entire categorisation of normal, LSS, express, dlx, volvo becomes a great comedy.

Sorry for the complete deviation towards MTC.

Fare increase is inevitable. But, they should have done this fare increase in small increments over a specified time interval. Even though it will benefit the STU's, more than the STUs it is going to benefit the private bus owners for sure.

I beg to differ from you on this. There have been positive signs since the rule change happened.

vijayan, refurbishment happens time to time whenever fund flows into stc. It is not specific to political party or transport minster.

I seriously don't understand what makes you to be this pessimistic after the fare hike.

because new gvt looks no different from old one.

We are forgetting the fact that, we are still having the lowest fare structure in the country.

of-course that is because of many people using bus for transport and If I am correct, still TNSTC+MTC+SETC put together transport more people in the country. This was discussed before..

if 2500 is the target for collection for 25KM per day.

if 100 people use it charge will be 25 rupees

if 25 people use it charge will be 100 rupees.

The above one is just a small example

I still believe this is the reason why TN buses can be low compared to others.. people are dumped in the buses. I have no complaints because both gvt are same on this

Also, I don't see a reason why the additional revenue will be used for freebies, when the Transport corporations themselves have a deep financial crisis. We can see that happening if these fare hikes will result in a huge profit. But this hike is just going to compensate the loss incurred in the previous years, and to meet the Transport Corporations' own financial needs.

of-course yes, but this does not warrants us improved service.

TNSTC Nagercoil

per day 80lakhs selavu..

old collection per day 35 to 42lakhs

sterday collection 52lakhs...28lakhs loss

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess MTC will emerge as the profit making division among all STC in TN.

Hi Arul
At Nagercoil region, roads are not linear and have many like hills road at west side of the district. Hence the achievable mileage is never possible at here. And the town buses were never gets a new one. Either they get very worst buses from some other region or old moufussil buses from the same region.
And the driver and conductors were also a reason for less collection.
At kanyaumari district doesn’t have any private bus operators. Hence the people believe only the govt transport. But the bus timings are not revised as per the collections. To achieve the mileage the drivers were run 2 or 3 buses together at the same time. Because they could not stop many bus stops. If 2 or 3 buses gone together means will not get any more buses for more than 1 or 1.5 hrs. So the people at the same places are a private cab and share the amount.
At Kanyakumari deport a driver told an incident his collection target for a trip was Rs 3200 one particular day the collection was nearly 600 Rs more. On that day the diesel consumption was nearly 4 ltrs more than usual days. For this more utilization of the diesel he got a memo from the BM. At the same depot a driver got an award for economy diesel consumption. And the same service never achieved the collection target. And the same driver has lot complaints about not stop the bus at the bus stop, ran the bus slowly and ran the bus together with some other buses (either come early or later). The motivations of the higher officers are not well about the collection.

Jayalalithaa defends milk price, bus fare hike

Defending the increase of milk prices and bus fares as a “painful” decision taken by her government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday slammed opposition parties, including her erstwhile allies, for criticising it out of “political reasons”. Ms. Jayalalithaa also came down on her archrival and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M. Karunanidhi for flaying the State Cabinet decision, saying he was “shedding crocodile tears” and people were aware of it.

Various political parties including the DMK, actor-politician Vijayakant’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and Left parties have criticised the steep increase in the prices of milk sold by state-owned Aavin and bus fare announced by Ms. Jayalalithaa.

In a statement in Chennai, she said her Cabinet on November 17, 2011 took “the painful decision” to increase the prices to save the PSUs — Aavin and state transport corporations, left in “bad health” by the previous DMK government.

“We were forced to hike prices as we had no other choice. People should realise this and not give into the statements (by Opposition leaders),” she said requesting their cooperation.

Ms. Jayalalithaa dismissed as a “bag of lies” Mr. Karunanidhi’s statement that despite officials’ request, he had not allowed hiking the prices of milk and bus fares. “He is only pretending to speak for the people. They are aware of his crocodile tears,” she added.

Taking a dig at the DMDK and the Left parties, which had contested the April 2011 Assembly polls in alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam but parted ways ahead of last month’s civic polls, Ms. Jayalalithaa accused their leaders of adopting “double standards” saying they had earlier expressed concern over the state of the PSUs.

Prior to the Assembly polls, these parties had conveyed to her their concern over the DMK’s administrative “mismanagement” and other issues affecting people. “They had said only I can fix these issues by virtue of bold, tough measures,” she said.

“Let their conscience decide if it is right for them to issue statements condemning the hike now,” she said

Another way how this hike is going to favor the private operators

* Most of the government buses in Salem-Attur route is express mofusil and it charges 35 rupees as new charge and old charge was 20 rupees.

* Private bus operators charges 25 rupees now and old charge was 18rupees. So to save 10 rupees people are preferring private buses inspite of huge rush.

(10 rupees will look small, but 10*2*30=600 rupees will be saving if these commuters choose the priavte bus!!)

So many irregularities in the fare hike.. Still the pseudo expresses exist..

Palani-Madurai(Ordinary fare) - Rs.50(Private buses and few DGL region buses)
Palani-Madurai(Express Fare) - Rs.64. Buses of Nellai and CBE divn(CBE-Tuty) are operated via DGL Bye pass, and others still running via Sempatti road with increased fare.

Pollachi-Madurai -- Rs.100(Old Ultra deluxe fare. :))

Palani-Pollachi - Rs.30(In private buses)
Palani-Pollachi - Rs.32 CBE divn -- Ordinary fare
Palani-Pollachi - Rs.39 Express(CBE divn)
Palani-Pollachi - Rs.36(Madurai divn). Not sure about the fares Nellai and Kum division.

As per one conductor from VNR region bus, still KMPL limit is not revised. He also said, they have asked to run the bus via DGL bye pass in Palani-Madurai route.

I guess decision on KMPL will take one more week, but most likely it will stay on the present target and no reduction which means no reduction in running time.

there is news around that there may be slight modification in the bus fare again today or this week. I guess mofusil express fare will be brought down slightly.

when express fares are higher, surely short distance travelers will not prefer using the express bus!! It is right time to gauge the patronage and divert the bus via bye-pass or not entering the bus stand etc., atleast this way we can some reduction in running time if not through KMPL.

I still don't understand why a 100% full bus needs to enter the intermediate bus stand when the bus is full of EEP!! These simple measure will give huge fuel saving for SETC.. don't know when this will get implemented.

1,000 ordinary buses of Chennai transport corporation has been changed into deluxe buses. As TN government has already increased the bus fare, this sudden reduction of 1,000 ordinary buses makes the people feel really bad.

So much of discussions over the weekend, took some time to read as was out of pocket due to a trek..

Every newspaper and forumer are putting up statistics on "before and after charges". Yes there has been a 75% hike in Mofussil/Express category buses, so it will be that high only. We need to see few facts before arriving at a conclusion that this hike is good or bad. When last hike happened in 2001 the Diesel per litre price was Rs 18 and now it is Rs 45 (roughly). So there has been a 150% increase in fuel costs which account for 44% of operational cost of the TN transport corporations. Apart from that other maintainance inputs like spares and labour costs have also increased mutlifold in the last 10 years.

This multifold increase in cash outgo and no increase in cash inflow caused the Transport corps. to go into deep red. They piled up a cummulative loss of 6000cr+ loss. Could not pay staff salaries, SG released Rs 60cr every month to help them pay their staff salaries. Rs 1500cr outstanding the Transport corps have with PF, Gratuity etc. They are not able to pay compensation to accident victims and their buses are seized. In this state what else will a sensible government do.

Increase of fares is a inevitable move. If you take moffusil fares which have been hiked the most, have reached 42paise per km. But still we are 8 paise lower than the nearest one in S India, which is AP charging 50p for this service. (Pondy cannot be a good case for comparison) So very clearly the fares per km that have been set are not atrocious or illogical. The problem now is that these look way too big for the common man as a 10 year pending accumulated burden has been kept on him in a single go. Think of if the diesel price was kept at Rs 18 from 2001 till 2011 and overnight CG announces that they can no longer do anything and now they announce Diesel to be Rs 45. This is how we the people of TN are feeling which is a expected reaction of any human being seeing a 75% (just eg) hike in fares. Had this fare been put on us in small capsules over the last 10 years, no one would have complained.

If people of TN are up in arms against the govt for fixing fares which are atrocious, then MH people should have burned their buses by this time. Now few people might quote factors like our bus occupany is 100% on moffusil routes, ok, sounds fine but other states have say 80-90% and they are charging higer than us, so that point becomes invalid.

Now as the much needed fare hike is in place, we need the following to happen:

- Amalgamation of all transport corporations to form one corp. (MTC to be left alone)
-Transport corps should clearly work out the percentage mix of service offerings they will run namely Town/Mofussil/SD/UD/AC (BPR+1to1 can be new additions). All these services should run the way they are coined as.
- Better maintained Fleet - deluxe services without bed bugs, 3*2 services are not as bad but still require addition of comfort like Air suspension + 12m chassis.
- Reduction in running time, this can be acheived only by not forcing too high Kmpl targets
- Introduction of luxury services in MB/Volvo intercity segment which will rake in the much needed cash and pricing should be on par with Omni operators.

When all these things come in, crew behaviour will change automatically and then we can expect qualities like responsibility and ownership coming into them.

Few cons in the fare hike observed:

- Daily bus passes at 50 are way to high, will kill this scheme itself
- Volvo entry level charges are way to high, occupancy will decrease
- 1000 buses in MTC being upgraded to express is very bad move, when fares have been hiked, this move sounds illogical.
- Cbe SS buses becoming express..
and few others
----------------

If still people feel that fares are high, then TN SG should consider transport as public service and allot 2000 cr every year (this need to increase every year based on inflation) to corps to help them run at low rates. Else such fares are un-avoidable.

Watched Debate on Puthiya Thalaimurai TV on Bus fare hike.
1 representative from employee union, 1 former Corporation head, 1 neutral man..participated.
some of the important points.
1. TN employees are no 1 in India, on KMPL utilisation. All the panel accepted. TN drivers give 5.2 KMPL which is very good.
2. employee/Vehicle ratio is decreased from 7.5 to 6.2. Ideally it should be maintained at 10.
3. Corruption to the core. If 1 driver/conductor is about to be made permanent, that news is leaked to Politician and he demands 10k to 20k for permanent position.
4. Always employees belong to ruling party(minimum 2000 people) are not working and going on "On Duty". They are getting paid without work.
5. Central Govt should give 60% of fund for state transport corporation. (like In u.s, Federal govt is funding state transport)
6. TN did not get any benefits from CG on Road transport. They got only very small chunk of 4k crore for new buses in the last 30 yrs.
7. Buses are increased from 12k to 21k. Employee strength or depot facilities are not expanded to balance that.

bus to emp ratio 10? KSRTC maintains 4.5.. I thought even present 6.2 is high for TNSTC.

1 bus - 2 driver and 2 conductor, total 42000 drivers and 42000 conductors (many buses can be made as conductor free, especially end to end passengers! Already ERO100 is very sucessful on this concept for more than 10years)

Remaining 0.5 will give another 10500 emp. Even if they allot every 5 bus one techincian and every 10bus one DME or BE, 4200 technician and 2100 engineers would be needed. Total - 6300, remaining 4200 will be higher oppicials, HR, IR, accounts etc.,

grand total 105000, present strength - 130200

ethuku bus to emp ratio 10??

thambi, don't expect that.. how over night is enough for setting everything right for the damaged happened for past 6-7years?

It will take another 3-4years, by then congress gvt at center will hike diesel price 6-8 times and price will be 65 rupees from present 45 rupees. History will repeat and 2021 they will increase the fare again.

My only point is have least expectation on TNSTC/MTC/SETC on 1.) comfort 2.) punctuality 3.) speed 4.) luxury bus and 5.)service i.e crew response! :)

I was traveling a couple of days back from Chennai to Bangalore. I came by Private bus and i was not getting sleep so was sitting in drivers cabin(as it was single driver bus). We had a long chat and i want to share a couple of information he shared (am not sure how far its true).

Here are they:
1. Travels like KPN have their own petrol bunks and approximately as its their own bunk the cost of 1 liter diesel is approximately 35 rs or slight more than that.

2. He also mentioned that tnstc and setc gets diesel at much lesser price(maaniam). Even if 10 passengers travel in a setc from madurai to chennai the bus would run in profit.

I dont know how far this is true? guys do you have any idea about this?

Ignis_S,
KPN Owning a petrol bunk and putting the fuel will help them in getting the additional revenue(In terms of commission in selling the fuel). And they cannot get a diesel at Rs.35(from original retail price of Rs.44 approx). Once i read a news item that Oil companies giving some reduction for TNSTCs but that could be Rs.1 or so.

Dhandapani,

May be it could be like this! TNSTC may not pay 23.5% diesel sales tax to state government. This will make diesel 10.34 rupees cheaper form TNSTC. i.e it matches Ignis_S 35 rupees. This will be another loss for revenue department to an amout of 700crores per year. Again anyway it is a loss for TN gvt.

But I don't think revenue department will let TNSTC free of SG diesel sales tax.

---------------------------

Valid Points.. :)

Fare hike is much needed.. But few things they should have considered..
They might have kept the old rates of Daily passes and monthly pass. Or they could have increased a bit.. May be Rs.10 for daily passes and Rs.200 for Monthly passes..

TNSTC-Coimbatore should not have increased the rate in SS City buses, by just pasting the stickers as "Express/Viraivu perundhu".

SLF minimum fare should remained the same. Rs.7 or a single stage is too much for our SLFs. :)

Literally there is no ordinary buses in madurai. Atleast we need few ordinary buses now..

Pseudo Express should be removed. Charges in ordinary buses of TNSTC and private buses have good difference..

No cooperation between TNSTCs in fixing the fare. I have quoted few examples of the charges levied by different TNSTCs in one route. Not sure when they will have common fare.

Cross posting from Madurai thread
Highest fare in madurai is collected between buses two routes.. they are
48AG Periar-T.Kallupatti
55U Periar - Usilampatti

Current fare in the above routes are Rs.25(Old is Rs.14).

Like MTC, daily pass rate is increased.. Present Daily pass rate is Rs.50 and I think they increased Monthly pass rate to Rs.1000.

Employee strength or depot facilities are not expanded to balance that.

i too watched this show .Former corporation head is Mr. Ramasubramaniam MTC Managing director and the neutral man is retired IAS officer.

This is impossible! The dealer would get only around 40-odd paise commission on sale of Diesel - so that would be the only discount he can make. For bringing the rate of diesel to Rs. 35, the dealer would have to evade paying sales tax.

Volvos will take in some 400~500 litres (the tank capacity is 600lts) everytime and hence they'll save about Rs. 200 on every filling.

There could be tax concessions for STUs, but they would not give full waiver - afterall, the state government revenues is mainly on Sales Tax and STUs are usually the biggest fuel consumers.

18 omni buses fail fitness test, denied permit

CHENNAI: Last week, officials from the K K Nagar RTO rejected the fitness certificates of 18 Volvo buses belonging to KPN, a private omni bus operator, on the grounds that the emergency windows did not comply with the Motor Vehicles Act. They said that a recent Madras high court has asked them to be strict with emergency exits and speed governors.

"We realized that the windows in these buses could not be opened," said a RTO official.

The KPN management has accepted this and says that they have no choice but to comply with the order.

"We are trying to see if we can rework the body and then come back for inspections," said the manager of KPN, Periyanan.

Chennai-Trichy - 16 ordinary buses
Chennai-Kumbakonam - 10 ordinary buses

Look now all 54 ordinary buses for Salem is for online reservation!! This is good move and it will spin good money in weekends and festival days.

I guess more ordinary buses are being added for Trichy.

So this means KPN has 18 TN registered Volvos? I thought majority of their Volvos were KA registered - IIRC, all their Multi-Axles are KA registered.

"We realized that the windows in these buses could not be opened," said a RTO official.

Wow! This is really a gem! Openable windows in a Volvo? If the governments go with such stupid logics, we will surely go back a few years in terms of advancements in body building. Instead of insisting on openable windows, the government should:
Either,
1. Insist on full size Emergency Doors (like the ones on KaSRTC Volvos), or
2. Insist on having hammers placed near windows, which can be of use in time of emergency.

Some of the region codes present in the ETicket.. This will be helpful for ppl who uses eticket and need to know which TNSTC is operating it..
Sample trip code: 1950CHEMAD.. 1950--> Time, CHE--> Chennai which is the starting place, MAD--> Madurai, Destination place.

SETC-- No specific region code.. Ex: 1950CHEMAD..

TNSTC-Madurai:
MM01->Madurai,
MM02->Nellai,
MM03-> NGL,
MM04->DGL,
MM05->VNR
1945CHETIRMM01U--> It is actually Chennai-Thirumangalam UD from Madurai region..

Note: Still Nellai divn uses Madurai code only.. i.e., MM.

TNSTC-Coimbatore
CC01 - CBE,
CC02 - Erode
1815CHEMTPCC01U --> Chennai-Mettupalayam UD from Coimbatore region.
Note: No Separate code came for tirupur yet.

TNSTC-Kumbakonam
KK01 - Tanjore,
KKO2-Trichy,
KK03 - Karaikudi
2330CHEKUMKK01U -- Chennai-Kumbakonam UD operated by Kumbakonam region..

TNSTC-Salem
DDO1 - Salem,
DD02 - Dharmapuri
1820CHESALDD01O - Chennai-Salem Ordinary service operated by Salem region.

Not sure why they have selected "DD" for salem. They should have selected "SS". :)

TNSTC-Villupuram
VV01 - Villupuram
VV02 - Vellore
VV03 - Kanchipuram
VV04 - Thiruvannamalai
VV05 - Cuddalore
VV06 - Thiruvallur
Ex:2300CHETRIVV03V Chennai-Trichy Volvo operated by Kanchi region.
-- I still have some confusion here. All Volvos are operated by Kanchi region. So VV03 is Kanchi and Villupuram is the main region, so it is assigned with 01, Vellore operates Chennai-Thirupathi, so i mentioned it as 02. I still have doubt in the last 3 regions.. Someone pls confirm this alone.

Hope this will be helpful for people who board with Etickets and searching for the bus whether it belongs to SETC/TNSTC. Will update the same with more details in TNSTC Blog soon..

The Pondy-Salem ordinary buses are available for reservation. I guess there should be more ordy buses from Pondy.

The reservation is through out the week - that helps a lot in maintaining reliability of the services. Since reservation is given, the operating depots would be under pressure to ensure that they are run properly.

Will RTC in TN come out from loss making with fare hike?

* 21,169 total fleet under RTC of TN,
3140 belongs to MTC,
6595 Town buses,
8007 Mofusil buses
2002 Spare buses
899 SETC buses

* 2500 emp gets salary without working irrespective of which government rules

* Total daily revenue collection before hike - 13.3 crores
MTC - 2.1 crores
TNSTC+SETC - 11.2crores
Monthly collection - 399 crores
Yearly collection - 4788 crores
Total expense - 5634 crores
Cummulative loss for 10years - 6143crores

* Expected total daily revenue collection after hike - 20crores,
Monthly collection - 620 crores,
Yearly collection - 7440 crores

* Out of 1.78lakhs employees, 30% are under the urge of retirement. Their pension will be extra burden for the RTC.
2000 new buses have been ordered by the gvt, so 9000 new emp will be recruited for the same. Their salary expense and new spare expense will be added to RTC financial burden. So 1500crores extra expense is projected for RTC.

Even as commuters are yet to come to terms with the steep hike in bus fares, many of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) city bus services have been renamed ‘Express' services and fares hiked by 150 per cent.

Most of the buses which till November 17 were operated as ordinary services, now sport ‘Express' stickers on the front windscreen. Already, the public are finding it difficult to cope up with the increase in minimum fare from Rs 2 to Rs 5. Now, the increase in fare for ‘Express' services will be 150 per cent of the normal fare. Such a practice to earn quick revenue for the transport corporations will only be counter-productive, says K. Kathirmathiyon, Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC).

Enquiries with the Transport Department reveal that the TNSTC had not obtained any amendment to the permit or sought revision of fare table. For changing a service from ‘Ordinary' to ‘Express', Limited Stop Service or Point to Point, be it private or TNSTC, authorities have to obtain permit and get the fare table revised. In this case, the officials have clearly pointed out that no such change in permit or revision in fare table was given to the TNSTC. Hence, it amounts to not only fleecing of the public but also violation of rules by a quasi government agency i.e., TNSTC.

These ‘Express' services continue to be operated as normal services, with the buses not going through any change in the number of stops or in terms of speed. Some buses have been named ‘LSS' and an additional fare of Re 1 collected despite the fact that the Government approved a collection of only 50 paise. The LSS buses stop at all the bus stops as in the case of ordinary buses. The TNSTC claim that LSS buses would halt at stops where public make a request, say Mr.Kathirmathiyon.

The running crew in most of these ‘Express' bus services admit they stop at all bus stops as done earlier and it was only the fare that differs now. In the event of a service being upgraded, the Transport Department should have given approval for the list of bus stops for stoppages.

Due to these legal formalities, not even a single private operator is indulging in such unfair practice of collecting fares. Just because TNSTC is a State-owned PSU, its irregularities are not questioned by the enforcing authorities, according to Mr. Kathirmathiyon.

Even if the fares are approved by Regional Transport Authority (RTA), as per the GO, only 150 per cent of ordinary fare should be collected for ‘Express' service i.e. Rs.4.50 but Rs.5.00 is being collected. Similarly even if approved by the RTA, 50 paise alone should be collected but TNSTC collects Re.1.00 along with the new increased fare. Even in moffusil routes, excess fare is being collected.

On the Coimbatore – Ooty the fare for plains (42 paise) should be collected upto Kallar (where Ghat road begins) but CCC complains that from Mettuplayam itself TNSTC charges ghat road fare at the rate of 47 paise for the 10 km road stretch in the plains.

I hope in coming months they provide

1. Perungalattur & Poonamallae boarding for Chennai
2. Silk board boarding for Bengaluru.

This will be much helpful for the south Chennai passengers and also for many who were using only Omni buses. They may switch to SETC/TNSTC buses with this important facility. In few omni buses even 50-60% crowd board only at Perungallathur.

with so much having being done, TN-STC's should tie with a Telecom service provider and a CUG connection for the entire fleet of intercity buses. Overnight long distance crews should be allowed to call to ascertain the status of pax in case they dont turn up on time....

2. Silk board boarding for Bengaluru.

Instead of Silk Board, I am of the opinion that Madiwala/Bommanahalli should be allowed. For Silk Board pick up, the bus has to take a left turn under the flyover then go almost upto HSR Layout to take a U-Turn and then come back to Silkboard - that is unwanted fuel consumption. (TNSTC buses already do this - but they should find some way to avoid this).

KSRaj/Dhandapani/Drthalapathy or anyone,

Please clear this doubt!

I remember Villupuram division got hand full of UD buses in 2007-2008 along with other divisions. They will running their UDs primarily on Chennai-Trichy, Chennai-Salem, Chennai-Pondy routes apart from Neyveli-Nagercoil and many connection from Cuddalore/Villupuram dt to South...

For past 1 year, I didn't spot any Villupuram division UD buses running on Chennai-Trichy or Chennai-Salem sector, I thought may be only I didn;t get chance to spot those VPM UDs... but even in e-ticking Villupuram division ordinary buses are being listed on Chennai-Salem and Chennai-Trichy sector, but UD buses are not there.

I doubt whether UD buses were handed over to SETC by VPM division and inturn they might have received the MTC Volvos!

If I am correct TNSTC 3*2 buses coming from Mysore road SBS joins the NH7 at Silk board, so I thought having a common pick up point for buses from Shanthi Nagar BS and Mysore road SBS would be useful for both the bus stand users.

In coming days few 3*2 express night buses from Mysore road SBS to Neyveli, Kallakurichi, Thiruvanamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Salem may also find place in online reservation.

yes timing is still there in CMBT and I have seen in Salem too. But earlier they had UD buses equal to TNSTC-SLM/KMU on these two sectors. I guess it has been drastically reduced now. And their UD buses are not in online reservation on these two sectors.

Buses coming from Satellite and Shantinagar join together either near Lalbagh or near Brand Factory. Both the buses run via Madivala - so a pick-up point at Madivala is better than running a few extra kms to pickup a handful of reserved Pax from Silk Board.

Even the dumbest KeSRTC is allowing passengers to search all their services to Bangalore by selecting "Bangalore" as origin or destination, but TNSTC wants the passenger to select between "Bangalore" and "Bangalore Satellite". They should merge both and passengers should be able to search between "Bangalore" and "Chennai" instead of "Bangalore" and "Chennai CMBT" or "Bangalore Satellite" and "Chennai CMBT".

thanks, that clears my doubt. Last year when I was in Bengaluru near BTM layout I saw many to and fro 3*2 TNSTC buses taking the ORR. If both buses joins take common route at Madiwala, then as you said Madiwala would be best location for boarding.:)

Yes Bangalore, Bangalore SBS, CMBT, Chennai Central, Trichy BHEL, Tirunelveli NBS needs to be clubbed together.

Even in type of service drop down box only three should be there

1. Ordinary
2. Ultra delux (UD, Delux, Semi Delux can be covered in this)
3. AC (AC and Volvo AC)

And in time line

1. Day buses or Before 12:00PM
2. Night buses or After 12:00PM

The rtc oppicers would be dumb there, but atleast the service provider could make it user friendly for searches.

The reason why you say normal TNSTC buses on the ORR is because they have a pickup point at Silk Board. The buses coming from Madiwala side will turn towards HSR Layout on the ORR, go till there, take a U-turn and come back to Silk Board.

Vehicles are not allowed to proceed "straight" below a flyover. I know it is confusing.

You are right. A handful of buses used to take the Dairy Circle-Jayadeva-BTM-Silk board route. That route is no better than the St. John's route though.

Now the buses go below the Silk Board flyover, run towards HSR Layout, take a U-Turn (near BMTC Depot-25), and come to Silk Board Jn.

Sir no U-Turn....
TNSTC's 3*2 buses from Bangalore follow mainly 2 routes....... 1) St Johns road from there straight to HSR layout and then Madiwala.
2) St Johns road then take right Madiwala market.....(some buses take madiwala flyover and then take service road... some buses take service road from Madiwala itself)
And SETC's Highway Rider & BPR will not take St Johns road.......
after Koramangala Signal straight towards Madiwala via Madiwala Ayyappa temple under bridge road then take Madiwala flyover and Electronic city flyover........

It was said that there is a 40% increase in bus fares but in reality it is increased upto 200%

For ex: Bus fare from puzhal-ambattur is 5 Rs before the hike, now it is 15 Rs which is 200% increase in fare

The bus fare for long distance routes is shocking

Conductors and drivers were given 2.65% of the total collection amount (what for they are giving this :ohno: ) as allowance, it is now reduced to 1.65%

Drivers by night, nomads by day
23 Nov 2011 , TheNewIE (http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/drivers-by-night-nomads-by-day/335973.html)

CHENNAI: For Kumaresan, one of the drivers with a well-known omni bus service at the Chennai Contract Carriage Bus Terminus (CCCBT), Koyambedu, the day starts with a frantic search for a retiring space at the terminus after driving for more than 12 hours.

Like Kumaresan, there are more than 500 drivers and cleaners, who are deprived of the comforts offered to government drivers by the State Express Transport Corporation at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT).

With no retiring facilities available for them, such drivers and cleaners lead a nomadic life at the terminus by sleeping on pavements till evening.

These drivers have to face innumerable hardships everyday from morning till the time they don their white uniforms and slip into the driver’s seat.

“For us, the run starts in the morning. With no retiring facilities available at the terminus, barring a few drivers, who prefer to sleep inside the buses, most of us sleep on pavements and also at some of the shops lying vacant for years,” Kannan, a 50-year-old driver and president of the drivers’ association inside the terminus, told City Express.

According to drivers, this sleep deprivation coupled with other untold hardships at the terminus, could adversely impact their driving capabilities on the road.

“Without optimal rest, most of the drivers are forced to begin driving and no one knows what will happen,” Kannan said.

After a short ‘pavement nap’, drivers then assemble in the open, near the CCCBT’s poorly maintained two-wheeler parking bay, to bathe.

“With the only available bathing facility inside the terminus in a state of repair for years, drivers are forced to bathe in the open,” Kannan added. “We are not seeking facilities on par with the SETC’s drivers. Provide us with at least the minimum facilities,” he appealed to the CMDA, which maintains the terminus. Even a cursory glance at the table given above tells the grim story of a mounting number of road accidents caused, possibly, by sleep deprivation. Will the authorities wake up?

I think situations will get back to normal after a month or two. Though the occupancy has decreased a bit after the fare hike, it will show a increasing trend. Also, the train fare increase will also add to it.

While mentioning the reasons for this much fare hike, i think no one mentioned National Highway Toll Charges. They also started adding the burden to the TNSTCs and SETC from 2009, resulting in increased loss.

Guys, have anyone of you travelled in any TNSTC bus after the fare hike? Are you able to see changes in terms of speed and travel time?

After Toll charges came in, TNSTC buses operating in the route which i regularly use has increased the fare.

When i was talking to my regular bus conductor, he said they didnt reduce the KMPL in their depot. And they were using regular route in Palani-madurai route with Express charge. Conductor and driver asked the use the bus in bye pass route meaning there will be only one stop(@Oddanchatram) in Palani-Madurai route. May be when i use next time, i may see a change. He mentioned that they may relax KMPL target, but it may not be for all buses because of safety concerns and to avoid rash driving. They can reduce it to 5KMPL for all buses and for long distance buses, it can be reduced further more.

Next is from Trichy and also from Salem... UD are getting full for every weekend. But very less bookers for ordinary buses in online!

* TNSTC should give press release for making ordinary buses reservation available on online

* Advertisement in their own site

* Posters in these ordinaru buses

* Also reservation counters in bus stand should inform people about the availability of ordinary buses for online reservation.

Drivers by night, nomads by day
23 Nov 2011 , TheNewIE (http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/drivers-by-night-nomads-by-day/335973.html)

Here Govt has limited role to play.
The Tamil nadu omni bus owners Association which is functioning inside the terminus is least bothered about the menace if the drivers are not given proper retiring facility. They cant blame Govt for everything. They operate as per their wish. They dont do any basic maintenane, in fact spoiling the complete bus stand. KPN brings a water tanker and parks it back side. All their drivers use that to bath/wash clothes.
Few north indian drivers cook inside the bus. Many sleep inside(read as under slung) the bus.
I can blame only these guys and not Govt. They should be fortunate enough to have such a facility unlike other cities.

Bus crew resent inadequate resting facilities at CMBT - Link to news (http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/24/stories/2011042451530800.htm)
- a news item published in the "The Hindu" in Apr2011. Few excerpts from the news item:

" To meet the vacation travel demands, there are more buses plying this month, especially during the weekends. Nearly 300 drivers come to take rest here during early mornings, but due to lack of space and the stuffiness in the rooms, many prefer to sleep inside the buses,” says Raja Venkatesan, a driver from Cuddalore. Many of them say this lack of sleep leads to excessive fatigue during driving."

“We have to buy drinking water every day, and the water supply in the four toilets is also very irregular,” says Rajamani.S., who drives thrice a week to Chennai from Neyveli, adding that sleeping in the buses seems a better option despite the hordes of mosquitoes that plague them continuously."

A sore point among them is the fact that their colleagues in other divisions and those from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have been offered much better facilities including table fans, beds and helpers.

I have seen lot of helpers cleaning Airavath buses in CMBT. APSRTC, the lesser said it is better.

Hi Pritm,

CMDA maintains the bus terminus for Omni buses and the revenue from shops in the facility should be going to it. Is that not sufficient for them to maintain the facility? I defenitely accept the point that Omni bus owners association can also pitch in ...but first is the lack of action from CMDA and then comes lack of interest shown by the association.

A simple step is all that is required. Add an "Any" option in the classes. So a passenger can search for buses between, say for example, Chennai and Salem, of any class. So, when they see Ordinary buses listed in their required time slot, people would experiment with it!

dr_thapalathy

Our State Transport Department must start looking for revenues from other modes also, instead of just ticket collection from buses:

1.They have a website. They can have advertisements and they can promote any new routes and additional thing they do. The website needs to be more user-friendly for searching facilities.

2. They do own Highway motels. They must be upgraded and all the drivers must be instructed to stop there, so that it will add up to the revenue. They need to own a Highway motel in all busy sectors.

The above are some measures to generate regular revenue within / after 6 months.
Then, TNSTC, SETC and MTC must stop all the backdoor tactics.

+1. I too got irritated in selecting "Type" in all these Radiant Info Sites.

I remember seeing "ANY" option in KSRTC site once. But it was stopped and it started listing services types separately. Same "Radiant Info" vendor is used by TNSTC also. Saw this "Any" option in the KSRTC counter of madurai once. Mobile site of TNSTC and KSRTC site displays all type of buses. Better they can remove this "Service class" option for main eticketing site also.

Instead of giving time-wise split-up of the buses, which is really irritating, they can display all the buses in a single go the choice of filtering by class of service and time, can be made optional.

KaSRTC was listing "Any" class even recently. The "Any" option was removed after people started simply searching for services. So they filtered services based on class and timings. Since the TNSTC reservation system is still at its growing stages, they can afford to offer the "Any" class system for now - may be they'll have to remove it later.

Instead of giving time-wise split-up of the buses, which is really irritating, they can display all the buses in a single go the choice of filtering by class of service and time, can be made optional.

One filter - either time or class - is required. Otherwise it will load the server heavily.

On the TNSTC's website, first they need to clearly put a photo and feature of each class of service offered. Any person new to TN would blink at seeing terminologies like UD, SD etc.

A small comparo...

Ernakulam-Coimbatore route, KeSRTC v/s SETC:

SETC offers only one bus for reservation in EKM-CBE route (EKM-CHE bus), although they have 6 services on EKM-Salem route!!

Here is the running time for SETC v/s KeSRTC:

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3350/ekmcbesetc.jpg
Rs. 185 base fare for 202kms, traveling 6h and 10m. (Total Fare: Rs. 215)

Here is the same for KeSRTC:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1923/ekmcbeksrtc.jpg
This is for EKM-CBE Bypass rider Super Express. This bus takes only 4h 25m. Rs. 139 base fare for 193kms! (They charge for the regular route - via Thrissur town, but the bus goes via bypass). Total Fare Rs. 169.

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4298/cbeekm.jpg
This is for CBE-TVM Super Express, via Thrissur town. This one takes only 5 hours! Rs. 139 is the fare (Total = Rs. 169)

The EKM-CBE Bypass rider is a guaranteed 2x2 Super Express Air Bus. The seats have pushback - 48 seats in all. CBE-TVM Express can be either 2x2 or 2x3 - all are Airbuses though.

During TTC era there were 40 services from Madurai to Chennai and another 40 services from Chennai to Madurai, total 80 services. Between 8 & 8:40 PM there used to be buses for every 5 minutes and all of them used to get full during week ends and holidays. They used to run via Trichy bypass not entering the Tricy town. TTC proudly called them as road train. Services included both semi-deluxe and super deluxe buses. I wonder where all those buses have gone. Have passengers shifted to Train and Omni buses?

Arul you are right. Number of omni buses have increased drastically. Also conversion of Chennai - Madurai MG line to BG has increased train capacity. Number of trains has also increased. In MG only three night trains were operated: Pandiyan, Nellai and Quilon Mail (Pothigai running at present). Now we have additional daily trains like Pear city, Kanyakumari, Ananthapuri and several special trains.

Apart from TNSTCs, Omni buses and trains, most of the routes operated by TTC, got phased to TNSTCs. For eg - Cuddalore - Madurai and Cuddalore - Coimbatore were operated by TTC, which is now being operated by TNSTC.

Also, TTC had, 7 services a day in Pondy - Coimbatore sector.
In 2000s, it decreased to 5 and now it is just 3 a day.

* After 10years, private bus conductors and drivers are getting more daily allowance

* More than 300 private buses are in operation in Salem dt.

* Before gvt bus fare hike, 100-150 rupees is their daily salary and 3 to 3.5% of total collection is their daily allowance. These private buses makes an average of 10,000 rupees as their daily collection. So their daily allowance will be between 300 to 350 rupees (10500 to 13250 rupees per month)

VOLVO Buses

PRTC also operates 2 VOLVO AC buses to two different locations. They are:

Tirunallar - Karaikal - Puducherry - Chennai. (Temporarily not run due to bus accident )
Puducherry - Bangalore. (Cancelled due to court order)

The Chennai - Tirunallar VOLVO bus starts from Chennai at 12:10 PM and reaches Puducherry at 3:30 PM and reaches Karaikal at 7:00 PM. It starts from Karaikal at 11:00 PM in the night and reaches Chennai at 4:00 am.

Fare Description for the above bus: Chennai - Puducherry: Rs 180 Puducherry - Karaikal: Rs 140

The Bangalore - Puducherry VOLVO AC bus service was stopped 1 yr ago due to some problems in the bus. Now the problem in bus has been solved and there is a proposal to re-run the service again in the same route. The fare in that bus is Rs 350.

what is the reason for this? can anyone give details about this problem.

Guys,

Saw this note put up on SRM's website:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7017/6422930977_e23bc4260b_z.jpg

It reads "SRM busstand", is SRM putting up a small busstand like what SRS and VRL have in Blr ? Any idea or someone can check when they visit Omni bus terminus area next time ...
