Yesterday and Today I am seeing more number of ordinary buses with sticked in front glass as "Satharana Kattana Perunthu" in MTC. Any one know why this sudden change in MTC ??? :)

Thillai ..here you go. Looks like Transport department is listening, increasing the Luxury class buses even after bus fare hike was a stupid move. Like wise in cities like Mdu where SLF are huge numbers due to low fares need a adjustment in numbers as fare hike has come in.

Dinamani (http://www.dinamani.com/edition/story.aspx?

Ordinary and Express buses numbers in MTC increased. The monthly pass holders who were severly affected due to the increase in SLF's are a happy lot...

Guys,

Saw this note put up on SRM's website:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7017/6422930977_e23bc4260b_z.jpg

It reads "SRM busstand", is SRM putting up a small busstand like what SRS and VRL have in Blr ? Any idea or someone can check when they visit Omni bus terminus area next time ...

yes there was a piece of land opp Arcot terrace which was eariler occupied by Mettur super service . SRM had their depot in West Mambalam and most of the buses were parked there. Since the B9R found it difficult to reach that place they were parked in the petrol bunk outside the omni bus stand since they have increased their fleet size they have bought or leased ( dunno) the land used by the mettur super service. It has a small shed as booking office. KPN and Rathimeena is bang out the CMBT bus stand but they have the pick up point inside omni bus stand

Hope they does the same for CBE also. In CBE, they converted almost all SS Body city buses as express.

It is due to the case filed by Traffic Ramaswamy in madras high court reagrding the increase of express buses in MTC ( almost nil ordinary buses), for which the court has ordered the government to reply within three weeks. So to Avoid any further cases i think MTC is bringing back the ordinary buses

Anand,
One more for my archive. Thanks for sharing. One request Can you tell the Reg No of it?. i guess it must be TMN 5X05

It is TMN - 5905.

From my knowledge Nagercoil - Velankanni / Trivandrum - Vellore / Trivandrum - Puducherry are recent one which was added when UDs introduced in SETC. Correct me if my wrong. I don't think there any new route(s) in SETC. If So it must be a extended service.

The Velankanni - Thiruvananthapuram and Puducherry - Thiruvananathapuram are existing since TTC times. I have travelled in these two services in 1997.
I guess, some SETC services like Velankanni ECR Thiruvananthapuram is newly introduced. Saw the post in the forum earlier before.

Government buses are running without passengers. Is it true?

Source (http://tamil.oneindia.in/news/2011/11/29/tamilnadu-govt-buses-are-running-without-passengers-aid0091.html)

English summary: TN Govt hiked the bus fare recently. The result is - people are abandoning govt buses in many towns. In Chennai, most of the buses to Madurai, Nellai, Tuticorin and other long distance cities are plying with less number of passengers. People are now opting for trains instead of buses

One India is a DMK biased online media. Their tone for bashing DMK and ADMK has tons of difference!

You can very well check tnstc.in about long distance buses. And also this post which I posted last week. There should be some loss in passengers, but when trains run 100% full already where the lakhs of passengers traveling in bus will be accomodated? The article writer should have presented figures here instead of making sweeping statement! that is why I called it as DMK biased online media.

On Chennai MTC, there was sudden increase in suburban and MTC riders also drop on bus commuters in these rail routes. Which is good for bus starved Chennai, because now MTC can re-route those buses on much crowded routes where there is no rail connectivity.

Further from yesterday ordinary buses were increased to 1200+ from mere 600+

SETC buses are nearly full for christmas too.. yaen intha tamilone india ippadi kathula poo suthuthu.

Inspite of fare hike and poor buses, looks still few sectors getting filled 2-3 days before.

From Madurai every bus to Chennai in online reservation is full on 27th! Hope MDU division include all of their ordinary buses too in online reservation.

http://i41.************/2ihuv4w.jpg

AC is also full

http://i41.************/68hiko.jpg

Next is from Trichy and also from Salem... UD are getting full for every weekend. But very less bookers for ordinary buses in online!

* TNSTC should give press release for making ordinary buses reservation available on online

* Advertisement in their own site

* Posters in these ordinaru buses

* Also reservation counters in bus stand should inform people about the availability of ordinary buses for online reservation.

I prefer my geared cycle instead of cramped buses or trains. If only roads were broad enough with cycle track people would prefer environment friendly, Good for health bicycles. Bicycle clubs can be started all over India to promote cycle riding. Saving fuel

one more reason for not much of crowd in the last week could be heavy rain.As other members said the situation will slowly improve as railways cannot introduce more trains ( untill very high pressure comes from top level politicians eg: Mannai Express) as SR will point out line capacity utilization is very high.

Another irresponsible article from the media and worst part is the poor facts and judgement. I am yet to see an article from the media which in single shot analyzes this fare hike visa vis the other state fares, the operational economics of the STC in the last 10years and then comment on the recent bad moves like increasing the deluxe/express buses, still running pseudo epxress/PP buses in mofussil routes which have happened post hike.

Jayalalithaa increases DA for transport workers
30 Nov 2011, The NewIE (http://expressbuzz.com/states/tamilnadu/jayalalithaa-increases-da-for-transport-workers/338687.html)

CHENNAI: In a move that will benefit over one lakh employees of all eight government transport corporations in the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today increased the Dearness Allowance of transport employees from 51 per cent to 58 per cent, with effect from July 1 this year.

The increase will benefit 1,19,261 employees of all eight government transport corporations in the state and would additionally cost Rs 9.15 crore annually to the exchequer.

The arrears will be paid in cash, Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

"I hope this increase will encourage employees and workers to do their duty with more motivation and cheer," she said, days after announcing a hike in bus fares.

Jayalalithaa had in October increased the DA of state government officials, teachers and pensioners from 51 per cent to 58 per cent, placing them on par with their central government counterparts.

One of the latest addition is Kayalpattinam-Kozhikode by Tuticorin depot. I think they started this route after ppl gave the petition to alagiri.

We too have one serivce Kuttam - Chennai (By KKI Depot). May be introduced during DMK period.

I guess, some SETC services like Velankanni ECR Thiruvananthapuram is newly introduced. Saw the post in the forum earlier before.

It was a diverted service and running via-Madurai earlier.
anyway both destinations are existing from 80s

Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today directed the Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation,Tirunelveli, to consider the representation of its employees affiliated to a trade union not to compel and harass them to achieve a mileage of six KM per litre of diesel in operation of town buses. Disposing of a writ petition by President of the Kamaraja Nadar Thozhilalar Sangam P.Rayappan, Justice K.N.Basha said "...the court is constrained to direct them consider the representation by providing opportunity to the Petitioner and then pass orders as per law within a period of eight weeks." The court also directed the Petitioner to furnish a fresh copy of the representation to officials within ten days from the date of receipt of its order. The Petitioner submitted that branch managers were compelling and harassing the drivers to operate buses for more than six km per one litre and action was initiated against those who failed to do so

Hi Binai,

From the day Dhandapani shared this data, i am also wondering about this THD, looking at the absence of Chennai, my guess is that THD1 shd be SETC Chennai central Depot, THD2 should be SETC Anna Nagar East, THD3 should be CMBT....not sure. Just an attempt.

as many SETC depot codes have changed, i am putting few new ones i know:

Shencottah - SHN
Tuticorin - TCN
Nellai - TVL

I too didnt have any idea about THD depot. I think they are chennai based depots and it was explained by subbu as well. I have seen three depot codes of chennai in SETC depot buses. CNA, CNB and CNC. :)

I'll try to get the short codes too. Following are the short codes which i remember..

TRY - Trichy
NPT - Nagapattinam
SLM - Salem
CBE - Coimbatore
MDU - Madurai
NGL - Nagercoil
TCN - Tuticorin
TVM - Trivandrum
MTM - Marthandam
KUM - Kumbakonam

KY(?) - Kanyakumari
PY - Pondichery
SNC(?) - Sencottah

Forgot for tanjore.

Closely located depots are at Tuty, Nellai, Sencottah, NGL, Kanyakumari, Marthandam, Trivandrum in south TN

In Delta it is Trichy, Tanjore and Kumbakonam.

NGL dist has 3 depots and 2 closely located depots at TVM and Nellai.

Nellai dist has 2 depots and one more depot is planned at Nellai.

Tanjore dist also has 2 depots and they are the worst depots IMO.

Erode routes are from salem

Tirupur/Pollachi and few Ooty buses are maintained at CBE.

Hosur should be from chennai itself.

Palani-Chennai and Udumalpet-Chennai is maintained by Chennai.

Theni dist, Kodai-Chennai/Bangalore, Ramnad/Rameshwaram-Chennai, Palani-Bangalore and Singapunari-Chennai are maintained by Madurai depot.

I'll share the details of TNSTC too.

Reno,

I feel, the old code was "KY" not "KYB". If I am not mistaken, "B" in "KYB" was part of the fleet number - SETC UDs had fleet number starting with "B". Chennai buses used to have "CN B", Madurai had "M2 B", etc.

Can we have a compliation of all the depots under TNSTC and SETC? I have created a file for KeSRTC (see here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0ArfEfg_4LWwedFZwbVV6SHlIUW03aGdzcjBaVXVpNmc&single=true&gid=0&output=html)). Binai,
Old UDs had "A" markings too. Initially MDU had 2 depots. I have seen MI and MII, now both are merged and the depot is present near court.

MDU<S/A/B> <FleetNos> This is the usual methodology followed in SETC earlier. Now they are painting depot name separately in the front face. Fleet code is lost. Still some new UDs had the fleet code written as "B 707" etc.,

Shared the details here (https://public.sheet.zoho.com/public/dhandapanik/tnstc-depot-fleet-details)

Here we go.. To my knowledge these are 2010 data. Got these details from a tender document from PTCS. In the tender document they didnt have separate Tirupur region for TNSTC-Coimbatore and Nellai, NGL was mentioned as a region under Madurai. I regrouped the data.

Though SETC has 1052 buses, the no of buses operational could be as low as around 750. This is the Corporation, that is damaging the name of all the other Corporations.

In any National / International event / participation, the best among the groups / team will be sent to represent. But, among TN Transport Corporations, the Worst among all is sent to represent Tamilnadu. Enna koduma da ithu.

Hi Vijayan,

Can you cross check the markings of buses belonging to Hasthampatty depot as Dharmapuri might have put a depot in SLM for operational convenience...

would be interesting to know if it belongs to D'puri.

yes Dharmapuri region has depot in Salem. Most of the Bangalore-Salem buses with TN-29 reg should be from this Hasthampatty depot.

These buses are moving empty from Hasthampatty depot to central bus stand.

http://www.tenders.tn.gov.in/pubnowtend/uploaded/TD_ptc64432_online%20etm%20rfp%20document.pdf

They have called for ETVM tender again...

* Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings have planned to implement Online Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM) in phased manner. Initially, seven mofussil STUs have been considered for this proposal. MTC Limited was not included in this proposal. Subsequent years, MTC will be included under this project. Initially, conductors will be equipped with GPRS based Smart Card enabled Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) with inbuilt thermal printers for printing and issuing tickets to passengers

* As part of this program, PTCS has planned a comprehensive Electronic Ticketing System. The main objective behind this project is to modernize existing passenger ticketing system with effective and suitable use of information technology to provide maximum benefits to the citizens and PTCS. Supply of 5000 GPRS based ETMs, setting up of Electronic Ticketing Machine infrastructure at 250 Depots, 19 Regions and 6 Divisions and a Central Control Room at Chennai (including required web based software) for the State Transport Undertakings in Tamil Nadu

The objectives of proposed systems are as under:-

Issue tickets to passengers traveling by PTCS bus service.
100% error free system with auto generation of MIS for effective monitoring, decision-making, deciding new policies and implementation thereof.
Automation of the ticket issue and revenue reconciliation.
Effective and real time Passenger Information system
Better utilization of manpower and bus fleet.
Measure to prevent revenue leakages by using ETM.
 Better fund controlling utilization.
Consolidation and auto compilation of data required by various controlling
authorities.
 Accurate and easy accounting system
Adequate, efficient, coordinated and economical passenger transport services to
passengers and promote the business
.

The selected bidder needs to

Perform requirement analysis, design, develop, test and implement GPRS enabled
Electronic Ticketing Machine (ETM) application software in STUs.
Procure, supply, install, commission, configure, test, integrate, implement, manage and support ETM, related hardware, network connectivity / infrastructure /equipments/ cabling etc.
Train the employees of STUs on usage of the ETM applications
Maintain, manage and operate the complete ETM system for a period of five years
.

2. INDICATIVE PROCESS FLOW FOR ONLINE ETM PROJECT

The indicative process flow for Online ETM Project is explained below by the Tender Inviting Authority and is to be studied by Bidder to understand envisaged process. EOI firms are allowed to propose any alternate process, BOQ which may be appropriate for online ETM project
1. Central Control Centre is proposed at Chennai and servers are located only at the Central Control Centre.
2. Desktops will be provided at the Depots/Regions/Divisions to view the data and information, reports. There will be a provision to upload the ETM data directly from the ETMs to the main server.
3. Division, Region and Depots are to be connected with Central Control Centre through internet.
4. The data flow will start then and there when a ticket will be issued by the conductor to the passenger. Then, data will be sent to the Central Control Station server and also to depot server through GPRS medium for that SIM card is embedded in each ETM
5. The Central Control Station will be equipped with a cluster of servers.
6. Servers process the data received from ETMs and nodes proposed at
Divisions/Regions/Depots can access the data whenever they require information.

I had the same doubt - KMU, TAJ depots mofussil counts seem low. Also TAJ Town seems to have 118 buses which is slightly high. Also some depots like Porayar has just 26 buses which seems low. Any idea whether KMU region's Trichy Depot (Junction Road) still exists?!

On Trichy region, RF and Lalgudi depots are shown too less counts - must be mofussil buses attached to these depots. Kulithalai depot is not listed - which partly services Trichy's city services (97 series). I have also seen a small number of city services from Cantonment depot - maybe changed now.

Coz, recently I could see only "Ja" in Tamil for Johnsonpet depot buses.

There is a TNSTC and SETC Depot very close by on the same road in Salem....
All SETC buses from south NGL,TNV,TVM etc towards BNG.... will fill diesel....... Any idea abt this.......?

yes the SETC and TNSTC-Dharmapuri depot are in same complex and also their is diesel station for SETC. 30-45min running time will be wasted for south-bangalore bound buses if they are doing this even now!

They should fill the diesel in Meyanur depot which is just adjacent to Central BS of Salem.

I too recall this depot in Salem, which is off of Gandhi Road as mentioned by Dinesh. Looking at the google earth, there are two workshops for Johnsonpet and Erumapalayam, so two workshop might correspond to Johnsonpet-1, Johnsonpet-II, Erumapalayam-I and Erumapalayam-II.

I guess earlier following depot were functioning inside the city limits

1. Meyyanur depot, TNSTC-Salem, near to Central BS (Mofusil)
2. Ramakrishna road or Central depot, TNSTC-Salem/ATC HQ (Mofusil)
3. Hasthampaty depot SETC (Long distance)
4. Hasthampaty depot TNSTC-Dharmapuri (Mofusil)
5. Johnsonpet - I, TNSTC-Salem (Mofusil)
6. Johnsonpet - II, TNSTC-Salem (Mofusil)
7. Erumapalayam-I, TNSTC-Salem (Town bus)
8. Erumapalayam-II, TNSTC-Salem (Town bus)

Now Meyyanor, SETC Salem, Hasthampaty, Johnsonpet and Erumapalayam makes 5 depots. Other town bus from Salem got shifted to Omalur, Tharmangalam, Vazhapadi and Rasipuram.

That facility has has not been listed in this list. Might have been a addition in 90's or members who frequently travel on this route on SETC can confirm ....

i think that filling station (may be sub-depot) you mentioned belongs to JJTC. I'll try to get details of that place

Still some remains of palani motel.. It is located near shanmuganadhi in pollachi road.. I have seen ttc buses standing there.. I hope they will revive these..

Can you Click that Place when you visit Palani next time? Eager to see the present status of that place

What they are doing with that tindivanam setc land? My bus went inside it when I went to Chennai first time in 2001..

No idea in that. I doubt whether the land is with TNSETC Ltd or Politicians. Members around Tindivanam can confirm it.

I think Tindivannam bus stand also have TTC motel?

I don't think so

Sir even i remember in that days while on its return trip to NGL/TNV/TVM......from Bangalore.... NGL/TNV/TVM Viraivu perunthu buses used to fill diesel in Krishnagiri......

Sathyan,
What about at present? Where they filling fuel? same place at Krishnagiri?

A small doubt sir. After seeing the tender document i think that the total holdings of the depots only is listed, which includes Town busses also. But the Depots in Trichy region such as Rockfort and Mandhurai (where the mentioned Lalkudi Correct spelling:Lalgudi depot is located) holds a large number of town busses. Is there only Muffsal busses listed in the list (which may be correct), if so then Town depots of other cities like Kumbakkonam, Tuticorin holds a large number of Muffsal busses. Can you clarrify this.
I'm also seeing that some depot listed here has less number of buses than what i see in reality. Again this is from 2010 data, not up to date data. The tender document didnt have separate Tirunelveli division and newly formed Tirupur region under TNSTC-Covai. I have put the separately.

I think Tindivannam bus stand also have TTC motel?

I dont think they have a motel there. My bus stopped there to fill the diesel, not sure about the present status.

Once when i was travelling on the Mdu - Blr SETC, it filled diesel at its facility in Krishnagiri which was slightly off the highway inside the town. That facility has has not been listed in this list. Might have been a addition in 90's or members who frequently travel on this route on SETC can confirm ....

You travelled in SETC?? Thats a news to us sir. :)

That was in the year 2005 when i was at Hosur. Appa kooda, SETC was bearable to some extent and Rajahamsa was not there to rescue the pax.:)

I can still recall that trip. I was sitting in the first row seat and it was a SD without driver partition. The bus developed a fuel pump failure near Paravai and the crew immediately contacted the MDU depot. The crew was very proactive, the conductor immediately caught a bus, went to the depot and came back with a replacement in 1 hr. He was very worried that depot should not run out of spare buses which have KA permit. In the meantime driver kept contacting the depot to ensure that he is alloted bus. That responsible were our crew...

When the bus started it's journey on NH7 (it was two lane then), the Palani patha yathris were creating problems for the driver as half the of them were walking on the raod making the driver's job tough...i still remember the driver saying "i hope one day, this road becomes four lane and i drive on it peacefully".

Hope i get a chance to meet him some day and see him drive the UD peacefully on the fully 450km four lane road to Blr...:)

Hi Binai,

This time around KaSRTC has been a bit lax on Mdu route, bit understandable as their entire attention would be towards KL during Christmas time. Till yesterday they had 2 SPL Rajahamsas, today they have added one more. No other SPL category bus they have put on the Mdu route.

They dump buses on the Kerala route for any kind of vacation - During Onam, every route got atleast two extra Airavats - there were around 5 Extra Airavats on the Ernakulam Route!! I am expecting nothing less for Christmas/New Year as well. They have also been on an upgrading spree - upgrading every Airavat route to Airavat Club Class.

Edit: KaSRTC has announced Extra Airavats to Kerala already. They are as follows: Palakkad (2x Airavat), Thrissur (2x Airavat), Ernakulam (3x Airavat), Kottayam (1x Airavat) and Trivandrum (1x Airavat). I have not checked for extra buses in North Kerala, or other classes of extra buses. Almost all these special buses are already sold off - so they are sure to introduce more extra buses!!

Definitely KaSRTC will add more buses to Madurai, Trichy, Chennai and Kerala routes, mostly it will be announced next week, they now have received additional 4 Volvo multi-axles this week which are going to replace Mantralaya and Belgaum buses and lot of Volvo and Rajahamsa are now free after upgradation spree from past two months
But this SRS charging Rs 1900 for Trivandrum is ridiculous, found even VRL are looting passengers, check the fares for Panaji on 23rd December even for regular buses they charge double and for extra buses they charge triple fares, passengers should boycott them, agreed KaSRTC charges more for its extra services but not this amount (regular panaji is 800 and special service is 1200)

Below is VRL fares for Panaji

Bengaluru Goa(Panaji) 19:45:00 38 VOLVO A/c Semi Sleeper(41) SS- Rs.2000

Bengaluru Goa(Panaji) 20:15:00 5 VOLVO A/c Semi Sleeper(41) SS- Rs.1500

Aswath,

Mdu has its intermediate fare on regular days. Take this Volvo Multiaxle from SRS on Blr - Trivandrum. On a working day they charge Rs 550 on Blr - Mdu and Rs 950 for Blr - TVM.

SRS is setting a wrong precedent. High time the SG's pitch into check such exploitation of passengers in the name of dynamic fares.

Any idea how much KaSRTC has to shell out to put a SPL bus into operation. In the sense, how does it pay the other state thro which it runs thro..is it trip basis or km basis.

Can't speak of all states, but the Interstate agreement between Karnataka and Kerala provides for special services during festive seasons (specified in the agreement) and weekends. Those buses are covered under the Single point tax scheme. These buses are specified on trip basis, and not the usual Kms basis.

Usually, special buses (other than those covered under the Interstate agreement) are required to pay Road tax for the other states concerned.

In case of KL-KA agreement, the special trips are to be operated via Mysore-Kozhikode. But almost all the special services announced by KaSRTC to south kerala are via Hosur-Salem-Palakkad. So these services should be run by paying extra tax.

Glad news for long-distance travellers on state-run buses who have so far been suffering leaky roofs, malfunctioning shutters, midway tyre punctures besides bedbugs in the ageing state express transport corporation (SETC) buses as they will have a pleasant journey from January.

The state transport department will soon be adding 475 new buses to SETC which would be a New Year gift for passengers.

Long-distance passengers have always been getting a raw deal as most SETC buses have glaring inadequacies like torn seats and pushback seats that don’t work, not to forget iron pieces protruding from seats and the bedbugs. However, these shortcomings will soon become a thing of the past, according to the state transport department officials who are set to revamp the buses.

With the government set to introduce 3,000 new buses in the eight state transport undertakings, SETC is set to get the maximum number of buses.

“Around 475 new buses will join the 900-odd fleet of SETC in January. Chassis for all the buses have been procured through the bidding process and body building is expected to be completed by mid-January. The new buses would be inducted before February,” sources told DC.

Alleging that the previous DMK government had not inducted even a single bus in SETC’s 910-bus fleet, they pointed out that “most of the current operational fleet have crossed the upper limit of six-and-half years or clocked over 7.5 lakh km, and so have to be phased out.”

A few sections may have expressed concern and protested, but a majority of commuters has taken the recent bus fare hike in its stride.

With an average additional revenue collection of nearly `6 crore per day after November 17, the day the hike was announced, the cash registers of the eight state transport corporations have already started ringing.

Highly placed sources in the government said the hike was a much-needed boost to the cash-starved transport corporations.

Now that their kitties have begun to swell, the corporations are planning more buses and better facilities for passengers.

“The [revenue] collection was Rs 13 crore on November 13 and Rs 12.75 crore on November 17. After the hike, the per day collection crossed the `15-crore mark to touch a high of Rs 20 crore on November 21,” the sources said, adding that the average daily collection now ranged from Rs 18 crore to Rs 19 crore.

The transport corporations, with had accumulated losses of over Rs 6,000 crore and were incurring an annual loss of Rs 2,500 crore, could now hope to come out of the red, officials said.

They justified the fare hike citing ever-increasing diesel and maintenance costs. Things had come to such a pass that many corporations were not able to even disburse monthly salaries and were delaying final settlements of retired employees.

TNSTC-Villupuram, TNSTC-Kumbakonam and Chennai’s MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation), the traditional top-grossers, continue to lead the chart with an average daily collection of Rs 3.5 crore (previously Rs 2.25 crore), Rs 3.25 (Rs 2.25 crore) and Rs 2.6 crore (Rs 2 crore).

Average daily earning of the corporations has gone up by 30 per cent to 40 per cent. “The fare hike will fetch an additional Rs 2, 100 crore annually and possibly the corporations will break even by improving operational efficiency,” the officials said.

After the hike, the daily collection of state express transport corporation (SETC), long-route buses that are in an appalling condition, have started to touch the Rs 1-crore mark, almost a 40 per cent increase, they said.

Consumers feel milked, PSUs safe

Teacher R. Vijaya, 28, of Chetpet, Chennai, and husband Rathnam decided last week to set aside an additional Rs 180 for household expenses after their monthly spend on milk went up from Rs 533 to Rs 713 following the recent price rise — from Rs 17.75 to Rs 24 — by the AIADMK government.

“We have decided to stop going to cinema halls to save money,” she said.

The daily commute of Rathnam, 31, an assistant manager with a private retail firm, has also become expensive. He said: “Nowadays we visit beaches or friends for relaxation. That’s all we can afford. I will have to wait for my increment next March to even consider a movie-a-month.”

More than half of the Rs 30,000 the couple earns a month is spent on basics such as house rent, transport and food. “We now save only 5 per cent of our salaries put together,” they said.

TNSTC-Villupuram, TNSTC-Kumbakonam and Chennai’s MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation), the traditional top-grossers, continue to lead the chart with an average daily collection of Rs 3.5 crore (previously Rs 2.25 crore), Rs 3.25 (Rs 2.25 crore) and Rs 2.6 crore (Rs 2 crore).

Inspite of VPM carrying less passengers compared to KMU/MTC, it is able to tap 1.25crores per day is really good news for that corporation. I guess first VPM will come out of the mess.

VPM might be having less no. of town buses and more mofusil bus compared to KMU! That could be one of the reason why VPM lead the show inspite of less no. of buses and daily passengers carried per day.

So latest hike would just generate nearly 2200crores per year which will again become loss making in no time.

This is one of the money miniting time for TNSTC-VPM. Whooping 800 special buses for two days. Apart from VPM division, Salem/Kumbakonam division also operates special on these two days for deepam.

More than a lakh passengers will be transported on these two days by tnstc bus alone.

IMHO SETC could divert all of their AC buses to Thiruvanamalai for two days which are idle at CMBT in day time. They will make good money.

“Around 475 new buses will join the 900-odd fleet of SETC in January. Chassis for all the buses have been procured through the bidding process and body building is expected to be completed by mid-January. The new buses would be inducted before February,” sources told DC.

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/chennai/475-new-express-buses-2012-683

I don't think they will deliver all 475 buses by Mid Jan. I expect it will come out in the lot of 50for 10months time line from Jan. But the new gvt deserve huge clap if I am proven wrong i.e all 475 buses going on road by Jan.

06, Malaimalar (http://www.maalaimalar.com/2011/12/06112331/pongal-day-475-new-deluxe-bus.html)

http://mmimages.mmnews.in/Articles/2011/Dec/193a5f9f-a399-4c9c-be21-4b10b9a65f6a_S_secvpf.gif

Indeed.

I never understood the fascination even amongst a section of well informed bus fans to root for 'fast' private operators such as SRM over safer and 'slower' SRTCs.

It is always better to be safe (and perhaps a touch slower) than sorry. I would rather start 30 min or an hour early and reach on time by a safer bus service rather than opting for these buses driven rashly by wannabe F1 racers.

That is actually a very good passenger friendly initiative. In Kerala there is a rule that buses should display timings conspicuously - the rule is not implemented very strictly though. KeSRTC buses have a board holder inside the bus to keep the timing boards, while Private buses sticker/paint timings near the front/rear door.

I have noticed this feature only in TNSTC-CBE buses - do any other TNSTC have this?

TNSTC-Villupuram, TNSTC-Kumbakonam and Chennai’s MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation), the traditional top-grossers, continue to lead the chart with an average daily collection of Rs 3.5 crore (previously Rs 2.25 crore), Rs 3.25 (Rs 2.25 crore) and Rs 2.6 crore (Rs 2 crore).

TNSTC VPM leading the way is obviously true as they have access to important cities like Chennai, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Pondy and Tiruchirapalli to some extent. Also, they have interstate access to KA and AP, operating to Bangalore and Tirupathi.

After the hike, the daily collection of state express transport corporation (SETC), long-route buses that are in an appalling condition, have started to touch the Rs 1-crore mark, almost a 40 per cent increase, they said.

Even after the increase in collection, SETC is going to be SETC only. It wont come back to the stats of erstwhile TTC or JJTC. Recently, i travelled in the new Pseudo UD from Pondy to Chennai. Some things i observed were:
1. Speed restricted to 80 kmph only. Earlier it used to clock around 100 kmph in ECR.
2. In three places, the new tubelights are being replaced with hanging bulbs with wires easily visible outside. When asked why they cant replace it with a tubelight, the conductor replied: "It is a TVS (Private built) body vehicle. So, any repair means, they have to come and don it. Avanga aadi ku oru murai ammavasai ku oru murai than varuvanga. Even if we do something and problem comes, they will tell that the problem occured due to us only. So, to be safe, we are doing like this" :bash:
3. The bus stickered as Unavagam Nilla Perundhu stopping for break near Kadapakkam.

Only God can help change SETC. :bash::ohno:

Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services (PTCS) has floated a tender to install 21-inch colour TVs in all the 10,000 state transport corporation buses belonging to seven corporations that together cater to nearly one crore commuters every day. The agency that wins the contract will also install VCD players and other accessories like speakers andwillbe responsiblefor operation and maintenance for three years.
Unlike the earlier project, where a central control room in Chennai decided on the content, this time, the operating agency will choose the content. “The earlier project failed miserably as the TVs weren’t maintained properly. If the new project is implemented properly, the passenger response will be good,” said a senior official from the State Express Transport Corporation, which has a fleet of 900buses.
Under the new project, the operator will be fined Rs 100 for every day that a TV does not function. Only films and songs permittedby producers and the Central government can bescreened.
The PTCS will also dictate the format of the screening. There will be two minutes of advertisements for every 10 minutesof film screened. The operating agency will also havetoscreen documentaries on road safety and traffic rules for three minutes every hour. It will be allowed to collect revenue from these ads but will have to pay a monthly licence fee to the respective transportcorporation.
While many commuters welcome the idea, some fear the content may not be monitored. “I would rather not have a TV than have one blaring at full volume while I’m travelling,” saidTamanna Kalam, a regular commuter between Chennai&Puducherry

DABBAS from Tirunelveli Region. Although its a Division it have more old buses than NGL. I don't know when they are going to replace these

Tirchy built

By Kumbakkonam

By Erode

"I can't walk please give retirement" saying this Salem built TN 72 N 771

TNSTC Salem can forget TN 27. But we ain't

Body building unit of Tirunelveli is small. Thats only reason for getting more other unit build buses and transfered buses.
Tirunelveli is musuem we can find TN 01 to TN 74 in it.

473 buses to join SETC fleet

Passengers between Chennai and southern districts will benefit

WAITING FOR MORE: The three depots of SETC, including one in Koyambedu, are expected to get the maximum number of new buses. — Photo: S.S. Kumar

Procurement orders have been issued by the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) for the purchase of 473 new ultra deluxe buses. The new buses are expected to join the fleet in batches, starting early next year, in time for the Pongal festive season rush.

The induction is part of the 3,000 new buses that were promised by the State government for various transport undertakings this fiscal. SETC will get the maximum number of those buses.

The move is likely to benefit many passengers who frequent between Chennai and their hometowns in the southern districts. Of the 18 depots that SETC has across the State, its three depots in Chennai are expected to get the maximum number of new buses.

Officials said that commuters have been complaining about the roof of the aging vehicles resulting in rainwater leaking inside, malfunctioning window doors, pushback seats, and frequent tyre punctures.

Over half of SETC's fleet of 948 buses have crossed the upper limit of six-and-a-half years in service or clocked over 7.5 lakh km. Many of these buses, which operate on long-distance routes between Chennai and cities in the neighbouring States, would be replaced by the new buses. On any given day, about 60,000 passengers use SETC buses and this goes up to a lakh passengers during the festival season.

Apart from SETC, other State Transport Undertakings are also expected to get a fresh batch of buses. However, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation that caters to 56 lakh passengers a day in and around Chennai has been overlooked. A senior government official said that since the average age of the MTC's fleet is only around 3.5 years, procurement of new buses has been put on hold for the moment:nuts:

http://dinamani.com/Images/article/2011/12/8/6bustrain.jpg

Also I think Madurai-Nellai BPR is kind of non-stop.

Nellai BPR is not a non stop service. It stops at Thirumangalam, Sathur and Kovilpatti. It goes inside thirumangalam town alone. In case of Sathur and Kovilpatti, they stop in the bye pass road itself. Recently few BPRs started going inside Virudhunagar, again they started skipping VNR.

ERO100 alone is operated with single door, and sometimes there will not be a conductor also.

We have End to End services in the following routes.
Nellai-Nagercoil
Nagercoil-Trivandrum

Vicvin,

One assumption before answering your question, the chassis in photo you are referring to to ask about the new UD's...

This is a Viking 10.8m chassis without Air suspension. So defentitly its not meant for our new set of WIP UD's which are 12m - Air suspension ones...

Got information that Kalyan Travels from Madurai is going to sell Madurai - Chennai Bus alone, they will run Sivakasi - Chennai.

Return took Sree Kannathal Travels AC Rajapalayam - Chennai.Started at 10.30pm from Madurai reached Tambaram at 4.45am.same here overtook HKB volvo at a speed of 100 near Thuvarangkuruchi.

I was wondering, is there any bus with air suspension on the front also?(i understand volvo and benz has front suspension)

Yes, we have air suspension in front axle too. Leyland offers this front Air suspension in their 12M CRS BS3 buses. ABT, KPN and few other travels has air suspension for front also.

ABT and ARc are 100% full air suspension fleet.
Kesineni, KPN are upto 80%.

12M CRS has optional front air suspension(rear is std)
Other models(12M and 222 Vikings also) have optional rear air suspension.

Hi Pritm,

As the air suspension topic has come. Few more on that.

what is the performance measurement criteria of a Air spring. Like how will the performance of the air-spring pdt form two brands compared ?

What make Air springs do AL, TML and Volvo/MB use...

Looks like kind of exceutive extra wide seats in the front and regular 2*2 seat arrangement in the back. Looks like an aircraft :) Thanks for sharing, first time i am seeing such an arrangement.

Conti Travels was opening one such Volvo between Coimbatore and Bangalore. Parveen operated King Long buses with such a configuration on the Chennai-Trivandrum route, and later also on Chennai-Kozhikode-Kannur route. All these operations are no more. (In all the above cases, front half was 2+1 and rear was 2+2)

Sharma operates a 2+1 non-ac bus on the Bangalore-Ernakulam route. KPN has one such bus on the Coimbatore-Chennai route as well. But in these two cases, the entire bus has 2+1 seating.

^^

do we have 1+1+1 arrangement? 3-4 yrs before I traveled from Ariyalur to Chennai in the lone private bus from that town, but my memory is poor to recall whether it is 2+1 or 1+1+1.

But 2+1 is quiet common on Chennai-South TN sector. There should be handful of buses using this seat configuration.

Some operators market "2+1" buses as "1+1+1" buses - basically, the seating pattern would be the same. On the side where there are 2 seats, there would either be a wide handrest between the two seats, or there would be two hand rests, thus making it separate seats.

AFIK, there is no 1+1+1 arrangement, the 2+1 at times are put up as "1+1+1 Maharaja Individual seats" by some operators. Essentially, in these 2+1 the seats are seperate, i.e the 2 seats on one side have have individual hand rests and the pax need not fight for them unlike in the 2*2 arrangement.

What is the daily average distance covered by stc buses? We can improve the utilisation by covering more distance as the major roads are now 4 laned.

Adding one more
E2E - Tenkasi - Nellai

Can ppl confirm the current status (i.e stoppages) of 76B Exp and 102 Exp.

Earlier 76B running between CMBT and Kanchi used to stop only at SV Chatram(Poonamalle - i am ignoring). (due to lack of bye pass those days)

+ Few non-stops

Nellai - tuitcorin

Trichy - tanjore

Trichy - Madurai

Yes BS is looking very nice.. thats why I asked how it is maintained now. I will rate this as no.1 neat bus stand in state as of now looking at the photo. Nellai new bus stand, Kodaikanal BS, CBE's Mettupalayam road BS will follow next place. After removing encroachment Madurai Mattudhavani also looking good. Trichy Central BS is also better.

CMBT, Villupuram BS, Salem/Erode BS are racing backwards and going to soon reach worst BS place...
