Atlast big "AAPPU" for SLM's cash cow. We need more KV on all TN road connecting KA. KaSRTC + omni buses should occupy all the road and TNSTC+SETC don't get anything in those route afterward TNSETC(s) start to think like KaSRTC

It will be more helpfull if they introduce more karanataka sarige buses in salem route as it will benifit common people more , vaibhav will be hit with IT class people . Even after this TNSTC salem will not come out of its old ideas. actually it is irritating to travel in the salem-bangalore route in TNSTC salem as they enter each and evry town even if the bus if full with bangalore tickets in salem itself. Atleast i feel TNSTC villupuram is better as there are many vellore-bangalore buses that go on by-pass and dont enter krishnagiri, vaniyambadi etc. My conclusion is that we should be happy that atleast KSRTC is providing better services to bangalore from TN cities.

Sankkar,

AFIK, there are no omni operators serving Rameswaram <-> Cbe route. Madurai to Rameswaram buses are run by TNSTC/SETC only.

You can try SETC UD - Ooty - Rameswaram which departs at 21:30 hrs from Cbe

Thanks for the update Subbu. I checked with some travels and was given to understand that there are no private operators to Rameswaram from Coimbatore and Madurai. Just wanted to check with our forum mates to confirm whether i missed out something or not.

As Subbu mentioned we have one UD in Coimbatore - Rameshwaram route.. Starts from CBE SETC BS at 21:30.

TNSTC-Coimbatore also operates one Coimbatore-Rameshwaram bus. It starts from Singanallur BS at 22.30 hrs.

You can come to Madurai and try Madurai - Rameshwaram passengers.
Timings: 00:10, 6:15, 18:15.

Service Code : 1940MADTVLKK03O
Route No. : 360B
From Place : MADURAI
To Place : THIRUVANNAMALAI
Journey Date: 23/12/2011
Journey Hours *: 8:20
Total Kms *: 679.00
Corporation : KUMBAKONAM

Adult Fare : 381

Now e-booking is available for Madurai - Thiruvannamalai ordinary services. But look at the distance, it is mentioned as 679 Km! It is more than Madurai - Chennai distance. Is Thiruvannamalai located in Andhra Pradesh? (just kidding). According to the distance they are collecting Express fare Rs. 381, which is higher than Madurai - Chennai UD fare (Rs. 325)

Already I sent a mail to support@tnstc.in & continuously trying Help desk number #04430201494 no revert from both the OPPICERS.

Freinds, Is there any other way to file this complaints. Pls help me.

Sir how come TNSTC Kumbakonam is operating between Madurai - Tiruvanamalai......?

It is operated by Karaikudi region's madurai depot and it is well within KUM territory. They also had one Madurai-Kanchipuram bus. Buses in Madurai-Thiruvannamalai route are operated by Thiruvannamalai, Karaikudi and madurai regions.

This is the bus which is operated by Karaikudi region's Madurai depot in Madurai-Thiruvannamalai route.

In last 1990 there use to be a saying NH-45 is ruled by Thathai periyar bus and NH-7 BLR-SLM is ruled by Annai Sathya (not Anna).

I would say, TNTSCs are being forced to sleep just because SETC & Private players must not die. That is the reason why they are not even allowed to operate specials to places other than Chennai.

SETC is finding hard to operate it's regular buses itself. In this case, how are they going to operate specials????? :ohno:

I think, TNSTC MDU, KUM and TEN can operate direct specials upto Hosur if not upto Bangalore. When, KSRTC is able to operate Special buses in other Territories legally, why can't our TNSTCs do it?

The bus very much travels in KUM territory.

I have seen TNSTC KUM's Karaikudi region operating special buses in Madurai - Chennai sector also. I have seen TNSTC MDU, TNSTC KUM and SETC bus drivers fighting each other regarding operating special buses to Chennai from Madurai. This is one problem that need to be addressed w.r.t TNSTCs.

 bad.... I wonder whether if TNSTC Nellai can bribe TNSTC SLM then the oppicers may give route permit. Also these oppicers might be getting money from private player/omni players too for keep sleeping. Pathetic division... Next to SETC, TNSTC SLM is the worst in the state. They are running 1980's prepared city bus route for Salem even now...30years passed Salem population increased from 2.5lakhs to nearly 10lakhs now.:bash:

Atleast TNSTC-Dharmapuri could have been separate, they might have been more innovative in routes for connecting Bangalore.

thank god. Oppicers got some brain to make it 4-lane. But still it will be a big mess at Kalaignar arch entrance.

IMHO, buses should have entry from main entrance side i.e from IRR and exit should be this way. But with metro construction in the front entrance, it will be congested atleast for another 1.5-2yrs.

Arul it is the other way around. They have created a exit route in the front entrance from the SETC bay thru the parking lot to IRR. The buses enter thru this road. But still as SOMA is working on the Koyambedu road for metro and the roads around the market is full of pot holes ( No big trenches will be a more suitable word) it is difficult for the buses to get in and out.

Dhandapani,

So are the seats of this changed to 48 seater arrangement. I have seen two other 12m AC to Non AC converted buses running in Blr routes which were very properly modified with new set of side glasses just like a regular UD. The rear cut(which only the AC UD's have) and clean and new side glasses used to help in identification. But those UD's retained their 44 seater arrangement when getting converted to non AC's. This bus which you have put is a very bad effort and will meet the fate of the "Non-Stop Garden city express" of SLM for which karuppu thagaram's are coming up in place of broken side glasses. :bash:

I too saw the modified SLF of trichy region twice(Not sure same one or two different bus) with 3X2 seats near MIBT today morning. This bus had "PP", "Express" written in the front wind shield. TNSTC-Madurai was the first to introduce that bus. It was the first BPR in CBE-MDU route and it is again back to Madurai city. All the modified SLFs of TNSTC-Madurai had "Malligai Ratham" stickers and JNNURM SLFs had "Vaigai Ratham" Stickers. Modified SLFs of TNSTC-Coimbatore is not good like TNSTC-Madurai. CBE buses also started coming back to city bus routes in few areas.

Modified SLF of TNSTC-Madurai which was running in Madurai-Coimbatore as BPR.

Its been there from a long back...

This is the unit which builds the current city buses in CBE...... Most of the CBE Divn. buses built here (other than private).....

Senthil,
One small correction here.

Most of the CBE divn(Coimbatore, Nilgiris dist and half of Tirupur region) buses are built by CEC(Pollachi). SS Body city buses were first built by this erode region workshop @ Pallipalayam. Later CEC also built few SS Body city buses.

Erode region mainly built SS body city buses of Coimbatore divn and mofussil buses of Erode region. You can also see few mofussil buses of Erode region built from CEC.

In the reservation page, it is indicated as Airavat-Club class, will it not confuse people who will assume it to be the regular club-class with leg support. Why is NWKRTC using the same name for 52 seater service... Does KaSRTC also have such 52 seater Club class in its fleet?

Right.

All SETC buses starts from Shanthi Nagar BS and this one alone starts from Majestic. Also i mentioned that this is the only TNSTC bus running in KA-AP-TN route. Also i mentioned a note about SETC route too.

Even 666 (Bangalore-Kanchipuram via KGF, Venkatagiri kota, Vellore) and 87(KGF-Vellore via Venkatagiri kota, Pernambut, Gudiyattam) run on KA-AP-TN route. All these TNSTC's beong to TNSTC-Villupuram(Vellore):)

Yesterday night one SETC Irizar 12m Blr bound bus overtook my KA Vaibhav which itself was doing 80-90kmph. That was bit of a shocker for me...:) Was not able to note down reg number details as i was on the right side seat. Guys, who frequent on SETC's, can you confirm with the crew on whether KMPL targets are relaxed for SETC's....

KSRTC does not have any Airavata Club class with 52 seats, all the buses are with 47 seats only. NWKRTC B9R buses are with 52 seats and is mistake to classify them and charge as Airavata Club class

Rejagiri,

I had sent this IM to you. As i did not get a response for quiet some time i was not sure and i am putting up the contents of my IM here...

----------------------
Hello Rejagiri,

I have one request, don't take it as a negative criticism. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and efforts to bring to the forumers the pics related to STC operations in SLM region. Kindly post pictures which are more clear and which the forumers can easily infer some information from. For eg. in the many of your pics, it is bit difficult to view or conclude any info and as one of the forumers had earlier pointed out, it is only causing us to strain to view the pics. Also don't post multiple pics of the same bus in the same view as any additional pic is going to strain the SSC servers. And before i finish, your pics are adding value, only thing required is some fine tuning.

Regards,
Subbu

Thanks for your advice and appreciation i will correct my faults and i try my level best.:)

Have used it considerable number of times in Coimbatore-Pollachi/Pollachi-Palani routes. Hope it serves for more years..BTW Heard that Palani-1 depot(old CBE region depot) still sends their buses to Pollachi workshop for refurbishment.

Guys there is a lot of changes happening in SETC, I travelled in their new Irizar-TVS Viking chassis bus(Green) b/w mdutoche ...It was a nonstop BPR. The bus had 2 drivers with one of them doing the conductor's job. Totally there were 48 seats and all cramped..People who are 6ft and above plz dont travel in that..The journey time they hadmentioned on the front glass was 8hrs..But the bus took ony 7hrs 11pm-6am mdu-che(incl 15 mins break+5mins for driver change).

In madurai bustand i saw almost all UDs were new..But they dont have the comfort since most of them were 48 seaters..Old UDs were not that battered..Think they have scrapped most of the ugly Dubbas..No new ac buses though.. These new BPRs Rip hard and can seriously compete with pvt operators' non Volvo buses since the fare difference is almost 100rs B/w govt n pvt..And if the Govt can consider the passenger comfort when they introduce the new lot of buses in jan then im sure SETC will go to a different level.

This might be the first good review on the speed for SETC bus in recent times.

CMBT-Mattuthavani distance 450KM in 7hrs is very good improvement. Bus might be on 64KMPH average speed. This is considering 7hrs is from end to end.

NH-45 toll booths are much crowded ones compared to NH-4 or NH-7/NH-47. A true non-stop bus w.o any break and not caught much time in toll booth will be able to do Chennai-Madurai in 6hrs 30min. IMHO such fast buses should be introduced in the evening.

CMBT 16:30 MMIBT 23:00
MMIBT 16:30 CMBT 23:00

Also if 70KMPH average speed is possible, Trichy can be covered in 4hrs 30min with non-stop even for a break.

CMBT 18:45 TCBS 23:15

Do all the madurai buses have 2 driver? Earlier only setc buses going beyond madurai used to have 2 drivers and a conductor. During last ADMK regime they changed this and all the south bound SETC buses will have a crew change in trichy ( bus will start from CMBT with a condcutor and driver) and for madurai buses it was in tindivanam. The TNSTC buses to chennai from places like rajapalayam and kovilpatti had 2 drivers out of which one will do the conductor job also. Now what is the practice in SETC buses? Is there a crew change in Trichy?

Have posted a small review of the K'taka Vaibhav bus in which i travelled in the Mdu - Blr section yesterday here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=86986675&postcount=1287)...
Thanks for sharing ur experience with KSRTC Vaibhav sir.....You know how difficult and painful it is to travel in this bus from Madurai to Bangalore .... But....
Our SETC's new SD's sorry 12M UD's are similar and with 48 Seaters which is running from Nagercoil - Bangalore and Nagercoil - Chennai etc.....
Just assume u had traveled from Nagercoil to Bangalore in this same bus 12M 48 Seater UD's which has travel hours is nearly 12 hours..... what will be ur opinion abt our SETC 's new SD's sorry 12M UD's and soon going to come 49 Seater SD's once again sorry UD's...........?

The first good review on SETC, that too on its speed, for which it is not at all famous.
I think the mileage target revision is based on depots. While some depots have removed speed restriction and revised mileage targets, some depots have not.

For eg, when i travelled in the new UD from Chennai to Pondy from Pondy depot, they have installed speed governors in the new bus and it is able to clock only upto 80 (it is far from good for ECR Roads), while at the time of introduction it was able to clock upto 100 kmph.

I was in nagercoil for last 7 days and i have seen so many specials to nagercoil and most of the buses had side boards chennai bangalore.

What are they doing here by sacrificing buses to Bangalore. Did they return back?
It is good that SETC started operating special buses. Hopefully, soon, SETC must opearte special Buses-On-Demand to Bangalore alone.
I doubt they must have come for a FC to Nagercoil Unit. Can anyone confirm it?

ரூ.434 கோடியில் 3,000 புதிய பஸ்களை வாங்குகிறது தமிழக அரசு!

Vikatan, (http://news.vikatan.com/?nid=5735&track=rss) 28Dec2011

Rs 434 cr alloted to purchase 3,000 new buses in TN
-buses more than 6yr old or have crossed 7 lac Kms will be replaced
-transport sector plays an important role in the development of any region
-in the first lot 520 new buses will be bought at an estimate of Rs 75,36,40,000
-Efforts on to identify old buses in which the power pack is still good, so that they can be refurbished and put to use.
-so far 1,432 buses have been identified and they will be refurbished at an estimated cost of Rs 97cr 58lacs

After many years (especially last 6) i am seeing a govt talking anything apart from just buying new buses. Salvaging of good buses by spending on their re-furbishement is a good move.

7,00,000KM running concept will make buses to get replacement almost 5yrs once except SETC.

Average distance covered by different divisions per day is as follows

1. MTC - 307KM
2. SETC - 609KM
3. VPM - 493KM
4. SLM - 466KM
5. CBE - 412KM
6. KMU - 469KM
7. MDU - 437KM

calculated base on 2010 stats book. But it will differ b/w mofusil and town buses within the division. Based on this the replacement yr would be

1. MTC - 6.2 years
2. SETC - 3.1 years (this never happens, if it happened SETC might have not reached this garbage level )
3. VPM - 3.9 years
4. SLM - 4.1 years
5. CBE - 4.6 years
6. KMU - 4.1 years
7. MDU - 4.4 years

========================================================

With retrofit program, I guess the fleet of TNSTC+SETC+MTC might be crossing 23,000 since not every old bus will be scrapped.

Last 2 days I saw 20 chasis of AL in Chennai Bypass towards chengalpet. I am sure it is a bus chasis and it was 10.8 m. But no words were written either on front or back. Can it be for TNSTC.

Anybody happen to pass thru Chennai-Bangalore highway can spot the AL parking yard near Queensland. It can give a fair idea on the new of chasis allocated for TNSTC and SETC.

Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced that the State government has decided to buy 3,000 new buses at a cost of Rs 434.75 crore, to replace the old ones.

According to an official release here, 520 buses will be purchased in the first phase and Rs 75.36 crore has been allotted to State-owned transport corporations for the purpose.

.
'Transportation plays an important role in the growth of a State. The transport corporations run by the Tamilnadu government connects various parts of the State with each other. Not just that, buses operated by these corporations also links States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Pudcherry with Tamilnadu,' the release said.

Giving statistic details, the release said a total number of 21,169 buses are run by the transport corporations and 2.10 crore commuters travel on a daily basis. 'In Chennai alone, more than 55 lakh people use bus services,' it said.

'Hence, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, with an aim that old and damaged buses should not hamper the easy and smooth movement of the general public, has ordered to take necessary steps,' the release said.

'Based on the Chief Minister's order, buses which are either six-year-old or which had covered a distance of seven lakh kilometre will be replaced with the new ones. A total number of 3,000 buses will be purchased at a cost of Rs 434.75 crore,' it said.

The release also said the Chief Minister had ordered to carry on repair works in other buses which are in need of it. 'A total number of 1,432 buses will undergo this process in the first phase and Rs 97.58 crore has been alloted for that.'

Only recently, Jayalalithaa launched an e-ticket booking facility for travelling by the Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation buses.

Passengers can book tickets 30 days in advance through mobile phones and the website www.tnstc.in by using credit or debit cards to any destination of their choice, an official release said.

The facility also allows a passenger to choose the desired seat. With the launch of this facility, the present 50 advance booking centres of TNSTC working in neighbouring states, would be ramped upto 300 centres enabling the public to directly walk-in to book e-tickets.

As soon as a ticket has been booked an SMS would also be sent to the passenger's mobile phone

The avg kms run per day for other corporations is usually in the range of 300 kms (350~450kms). Average distance run by long distance routes are not separately available - the other corporations run both city services as well as long distance routes.

KeSRTC has buses running just about 200kms over the day (city buses) as well as those running upto 800-odd kms per day. Similar is the case of KaSRTC.

The crew schedules in other corporations are usually only about 12~14hrs long, not the 16~18hr duties in TNSTCs.

Binai,

Considering the same yard stick, looking at TN state buses as a whole, it comes to about 400~450kms per day. As SETC has been specifically looked into, the avg per day km looks too huge.

Volvo india introduces 3 new bus models
India Infoline News Service (http://www.indiainfoline.com/Markets/News/Volvo-india-introduces-3-new-bus-models/5322361044), Dec 29, 2011

All of these actions take place just three months after Volvo Buses announced its ambition to be a USD 1 billion company in the coming years.

Volvo launched a new range of buses, comprising city bus and coaches. The new products will not only raise the standards in the segment where Volvo Buses has a presence, but is now all ready to bring in a new coach aimed at the second tier of routes & cities in India. Present at the launch were Hakan Karlsson, President, Volvo Bus Corporation and Akash Passey, Managing Director & CEO, Volvo Buses in South Asia.

The expanded range of Volvo Buses in India now includes three new models that are the first-of- its kind in the country and takes the company’s bus range to 10 different products. All of these actions take place just three months after Volvo Buses announced its ambition to be a US$1bn company in the coming years.

Volvo has also taken unilateral step of raising safety standards by introducing enhanced Front Under-run Protection (FUP) & Frontal Impact Protection (FIP) systems across all its coaches.

Hakan Karlsson, President, Volvo Bus Corporation, said, “About three months ago we promised that we will play a bigger role in the progress of the Indian bus industry and announced an investment of Rs. 400 crore. Today, we stand here with a product range that will take us there. Most importantly, our focus remains to drive quality of life and with our current range we will be spreading the Volvo experience to a larger market in the country. We have defined a clear role for India in the future – as one of the largest markets in the group, a global hub for selected models, local product development and that utilises the synergies we hold as a group in India. Today, we can proudly say we have set our foundation.”

Akash Passey, Managing Director & CEO, Volvo Buses in South Asia, said, “Today, in one single step we are bringing in products equal to that what we did in the last decade. We now have the local competence & experience to raise the momentum of change manifold. This is just as we expand our market access and raise standards & expectations. We are on our way to reaching our vision of a 1 billion dollar company with 5,000 buses produced each year. Importantly, with every new product we are touching areas of national and human value – improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, attractive public transport, safer & comfortable travel. We are ensuring that, with Volvo, our customers are No.1 in their own business, while more & more passengers in the country experience bus travel – the way the world moves.”

India’s First Multi-axle coach at 14.5m and with steered axle

Luxury Coaches have a new Standard with the Volvo 9400PX
Just when one would wonder what more can be achieved in luxury, travel comfort, safety & transport economy in coaches, here is the answer – the Volvo 9400PX. It is longer, more spacious, more high-performing and comes with a host of new features to make travel even more comfortable. At 14.5m the Volvo 9400PX is the longest intercity coach yet in India. Step inside the coach and discover the finest of interiors with the most luxurious environment.

The Volvo 9400PX is built on the new light-weight Volvo PX platform, which provides even better grade ability and acceleration as well as enhanced stability & larger luggage space. The new coach also packs a performance like never before with the new Volvo 11-litre engine with 370hp. A key feature is the steerable tag-axle for better road handling and manoeuvrability.

Another key feature of the Volvo 9400PX is the Volvo I-Shift gearbox. This automatic gear changing system provides high drive & ride comfort, better fuel economy and offers high braking power of 400 to 600 kW.

The Volvo 9400PX spacious interiors offer a range of opportunities for customers to incorporate a range of passenger conveniences from pantry, toilets, VOD and a range of other features – for smooth long-distance travel.

The bus offer an all-new dimension of comfort in road travel from the most well-built bus as you glide on for miles. It is a coach in its own class and an inspiration to travel, like never before.

Volvo 9400PX has the unique distinction of being a global introduction, starting from India. The first product of its type in the Volvo Product range too.

India’s First Multi-axle City bus, with steered axle

How to offer 55% more occupancy and reduce emissions, fuel and space up to 30%?
Volvo 7400XL is India’s first multi-axle bus with a steered axle. At 14.5m, it is India’s first city bus ready to support efficient mass bus-based transport systems to move more people, with fewer buses, quicker & with less resource utilisation. Volvo 7400XL will take the Volvo City Bus Concept to a new level.

If the Volvo 7400 helped move people away from their personal vehicles and save fuel, emissions, road space – the Volvo 7400XL will do this with even greater intensity. The reason is straightforward; the Volvo 7400XL can carry almost 55% more people and as a result improve upon fuel, emissions and road space consumption by as much as 30%. Imagine what this can do for growing cities, high occupancy routes and for de-congestion? The savings are profound.

Most importantly, this new City Bus from Volvo comes after 10-years of deep understanding of high-performing bus applications in India. Manoeuvrability in the city is gracefully tackled by the steered tag-axle allowing the bus to take on tight roads and turns of a city.

A Global Product. Built for Asia. From Asia.

Volvo enters the second tier of routes in India with the Volvo 9100 Coach

The Volvo 9100 coach is a Global introduction for Asia, from Asia. This new coach is an integral part of Volvo Buses’ ambition to drive quality of transport across the country to more & more cities and routes. The Volvo 9100 embodies the Volvo values for safety, quality and care for environment.

The engine is optimized for a range of driving conditions and is backed by Volvo’s rich experience of 10 years in high performing bus applications on Indian roads. The new Volvo coach is designed to meet medium haulage applications and has been designed to take the Volvo experience to millions of new passengers.

For the bus operators the Volvo 9100 presents an unbeatable business proposition in transport economy – offering excellent value in fuel efficiency, maintainability and overall operating costs. The Volvo 9100 highlights the organization’s local product development competencies.

The Volvo 9100 is a global introduction, developed in Asia, starting from India. It takes Volvo buses into new market segments in the country, thereby expanding the market potential significantly.

Enhanced Front Under-run Protection & Frontal Impact protection across all coaches
Volvo Buses has led the way by introducing the first-of-its-kind safety features by any bus manufacturer. As part of its stated value of safety, Volvo has introduced the Front Impact Protection (FIP) and Front Under-run Protection (FUP) systems. Set to exceed global standards and tested by ARAI in India, even as the country regulations have not set any demands on this front.

The FIP is a frontal collision protection system, which effectively spreads the force of an impact into the frontal structure. Full-scale tests show that FIP considerably cuts the risk of serious personal injury.

The FUP system significantly minimises the risk of injury in the event of a frontal collisions between buses and cars. It consists of a steel structure behind the bumper that prevents the oncoming passenger car from becoming wedged under the bus while at the same time offering excellent protection for those components that are fitted at the lower front part of the coach.

Both, these enhancements apply to every Volvo Coach

We are seeing so much of colors and no standardization in our TNSTC buses. Older SLF came up Red/Yellow/White liveries. City express buses had White livery and there were few light blue colored LSS services running inside the city. New JNNURM SLFs came up with Blue and white with red line for AL SLFs and Orange/Yellow/Blue colors for Marcopolos. Latest entrants of SS Body city buses came up with many colors for their front faces.

After the new fare hike, all the SS body buses were converted as Express services. Suddenly these SS body buses started getting repainted with single color for their front profile so that we can easily identify them as Express buses.

Repainted from yellow to Green. Have seen few buses moving from Pollachi to CBE after getting repainted.

Madurai & Nellai division to get 250 new buses

Source : TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/11311083.cms)

After the singeing bus fare hike, the state transport corporation has some good news for the public.

The corporation has decided to replace old and redundant buses with brand new vehicles. To start with, Madurai division will get 250 new buses to replace old vehicles. The 250 buses are part of the bouquet of 3,000 new buses to be introduced across the state. Chief minister J Jayalalithaa had earlier in the week announced that the buses would be bought at a cost of Rs 434.75 crore.

"Buses which had been in operation for six years or those which had been operated for seven lakh km would be replaced with new buses to avoid inconvenience being caused to commuters,'' said a TNSTC official.

The new buses would be distributed in Madurai, Virudhunagar and Dindigul districts that fall under the Madurai division said, TNSTC, Madurai General Manager, P Chandrasekaran. The current fleet strength is 2,500 buses in the three districts.

"We have identified 250 old buses to be scrapped and another 250 buses, which were comparatively old, will be given a facelift. Eventually, all the old buses will be scrapped," he said. There will be no new augmentation of buses this year as equal number of buses is to be condemned. The augmentation of new buses will happen in the coming years, he added.

TNSTC, Tirunelveli with the operating area of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts will also be getting 250 new buses as announced in the budget. TNSTC, Tirunelveli general manager, Murugan, said the fleet strength is 1,980 buses and 50% of the buses are just three years old since it was the youngest corporation started in November 2010. "Half of my fleet is not very old but we will be scrapping 60 vehicles as the new ones arrive," Murugan said.

With a 3% annual growth in traffic predicted, the corporation will study if there is need to augment new buses, he said. The demand for Thoothukudi and Tenkasi routes is going up and augmentation of new buses in this section will be considered after study, he said.

The officials said they will be getting the bus chassis in a couple of months and the bodies will be built in local depots.

+100 to TNSTC-CBE for standardisation. I've always been a fan of TNSTC-CBE, and this only makes them take a special spot.

True. This is where TNSTC-CBE is unique. Still they have enough number of Ordinary buses running in all the important cities/towns present in its territory. Also we got more LSS/Express buses after this recent fare hike. Ordinary buses in madurai is almost nil. I hope TNSTC-Madurai will introduce some ordinaries.

I am bit confused. Is the 3000 buses announced by CM is the first order passed in the assembly which included the 400 odd SETC buses. What is the composition of the 3000 buses. As i read in the MTC thread that 200 MTC buses odinarary buses. Is there any 12M ac buses or still they are going for the 12 UD type buses. I would prefer some AC city and moffusil buses to all division on AL chasis. We must have some AL 3*2 ac buses also 2*2 ac buses. What is going to be the bus types they are going to be built whether they are going to move all old buses to some non collection routes and introduce new buses in the routes or will it be new bus routes

Hi Arun,

This is the composition of 3,000 buses when initial news came out in Sep'11:

3,000 புதிய பஸ்கள் இயக்கப்படும்: அரசு
-- 3000 new buses will be introduced in the current fiscal
-- buses more than 6 years old or have crossed 7 lac kms will be replaced
Break up of 3000 buses is as follows:
MTC - 100
SETC - 473
VPM - 586
SLM - 361
CBE - 593
KUM - 438
MDU - 184
TIN - 265

Rs.434 cr will be spent on the procurement of these buses
.

But the numbers have changed a bit now looking at the latest allotements:

Mdu - 250 (184 - old allotment)
MTC - 200 (100 - old allotment)
SLM - 150 so far

We can put in the new numbers as when we get to know of them for other divisions...

Madurai & Nellai division to get 250 new buses

Source : TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/11311083.cms)

Good to see all the divisions announcing introduction of new buses as a news. Very very happy to see the announcement regarding fleet augmentation in TNSTC Tirunelveli. Hope they replace all the dubba city buses in Tirunelveli, Tuticorn and Kanyakumari districts.

Can anyone give the fleet strength of Govt and Private city buses in Tirunelveli?

Arun, all the buses in this present lot are Non-AC buses only. For SETC 12 M Chaises has been allocated and for others it is 10.8 M Chaises. Regarding augmentation of fleet / introduction of new routes, it is upto the respective Corporation Heads.

Hi Arun,This is the composition of 3,000 buses when initial news came out in Sep'11:
But the numbers have changed a bit now looking at the latest allotements:
Mdu - 250 (184 - old allotment)
MTC - 200 (100 - old allotment)
SLM - 150 so far

We can put in the new numbers as when we get to know of them for other divisions...

I think the allocation of chaises was bit too high for TNSTC VPM and CBE. TNSTC SLM and TNV badly needed new buses. I think they need some increased share of buses.
Also, i heard that TNSTC VPM pondy depot is going to get 22 new buses.

Subbu, some doubts from the above document:
1. Why is there such a huge decline in the fleet and staff strength of TNSTC MDU reported in that period? Is that due to bi-furcation?
2. Why have they not included KeSRTC, PRTC, KTCL-Goa when they have included STUs of Nagaland, Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh?

To be proud of our STUs; i am adding the following information, which our STUs are unique in:
1. MTC has the youngest fleet age among all the reported STUs.
2. MTC carries the highest no of passengers per bus.
3. TNSTC VPM has the highest mileage per bus - 5.73 kmpl.
4. SETC has the highest revenue per bus per day.
5. SETC buses travel the most longest in a day.

Yes, the documents seem to have some missing data/based on outdated data. First of all according to various sources the fleet strength of TN is 21,169 buses (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/government-and-policy/article2754326.ece). However the document that you posted mentions that it is 19XXX. Second of all the document says that, "The largest decline in staff strength during 2010-11 was recorded by TNSTC (Madurai) Ltd. (10,770)". Such a large decline in staff strength may happen only because of bifurcation. On the flip side TNSTC MDU recorded the maximum staff productivity which may happen if they had considered MDU/nellai as a single unit . This make me think that the document was drafted based on outdated / missing data.

more power to sagayam

In what is considered to be the first time, the Madurai District Administration today cancelled the recognition given to the Chekanoorani Panchayat to operate a Bus Stand, 20km from here, because it did not have basic amenities. Following a series of complaints, District Collector U.Sagayam had ordered the Transport department officials to thoroughly examine facilities provided at important bus-stands in the district. It was found that there were no basic amenities like lighting facility at Chekanoorani. Though the administration sent several reminders to set right the deficiencies, the local body did not take any action, forcing the administration to cancel the recognition to the Bus stand, officials said. The impact of the administrative action was that the Panchayat would not be able to auction the parking space, and shops and would loose heavily, the officials said. The official report made several complaints about other bus-stands also. While Tirumangalam bus stand had too many shops than what was permitted, the Usilampatti bus stand was being used as "two wheeler parking site". A team comprising Regional Transport Officer Natarajan and Vehicle inspector Prabhakaran, had inspected the Tirumangalam, Usilampatti and Chekanoorani bus stands. The collector has asked the Usilampatti and Tirumangalam municipalities to correct the deficiencies pointed out in the report.

Good to see the expansion from Volvo, giving a threat to the classical players of Indian Market - Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland.

I have never heard of Volvo 7400 Semi-Low Floor City bus. Also, i thought Volvo 7400 City bus has been stopped and Volvo 8400 has been introduced as a upgraded version.

Can anyone throw a light on difference between Volvo 7400 and Volvo 8400 and post some pics of Volvo 7400 Semi-Low Floor City bus.

Volvo 7400 is a totally new product - it is being launched by Volvo at the Auto Expo. There is no way you could have heard of it earlier, forget seeing images. In India, Volvo only had the 8400 City bus (which was earlier called B7R LE). Except Volvo 8400 and 9400, all the other products mentioned in the news article are new products - not just in India, but across the globe. The products mentioned would all be manufactured in India.

Thanks for sharing.

Out of 2,37,288 lakhs people transported ending March 2011, 72,600 lakhs people were transported by TNSTC+MTC+SECT corporations. Which is around 30%. And there is some error with Madurai as pointed out by Mr.Nellai. They have not included Nellai division's passenger data. So it shows 2000 lakhs passenger drop in 2011 compared to 2010.

With 17% fleet transporting 30% of passengers shows the chronic rush in TN buses compared to other states. Per day per bus column also shows MTC is the worst in the country.. Even TNSTC-MDU/CBE stands close to BEST, TNSTC-SA/VPM/KMU per bus crowd stands way higher compared to other state.

Such crowding could be due to following reason

1. Passengers are dumped inside the bus end to end.
2. KM covered by TN buses is higher than other state. (from stats average is 450KM when it is around 300KM avg for other states)
3. More intermediate passengers on mofusil route (for example Nellai-Madurai mofusil bus can transport many intermediate passengers viz MDU-Virudhunagar, Virudhnagar-Kovilpati, Kovilpati-Nellai etc., apart from end to end)
4. More no. of town buses. Usually town buses transport more people than mofusil.
5. Population density.

I guess 2,3,4,5 might be the main reason and 1 could be on weekend and festival days. GPRS based ticketing machine will help TNSTC to make its operation more effective by commuters orginating place analysis.

Spending power of one passenger

APSRTC = 11.24 rupees
all KA RTC = 17.44 rupees
all TN RTC = 7.64 rupees

now this spending power will increase approx by 30% for TN due to recent fare hike.

Nellai,

The document does not include data for TNSTC - Nellai partially. Thats why there is shortfall in TN buses total numbers. TNSTC Nellai fleet strength was 1,980 as of Dec'11. But as per the doc TNSTC MDU numbers which should have fallen by roughtly 1,800 nos fell only by 583 nos after bifurcation. So the kms and fleet strength shown against MDU also include Nellai figures as well. But the employee strength of the TNSTC MDU claimed by the doc at 14,588 is almost currect as TNTSC MDU site claims 6.67 per bus. Due wrong kms and fleet mapped against right number of employees, they seem to have become more productive. Hope they dont get any award based on these figures...:)

State Express TC TN Ltd. (559.28 kms/bus/day) is showing up as their buses supposed to do that way...

One more interesting data point thrown up by the doc is the number of buse per 10lac people in a state. K'taka is ahead at 348 (excluding Delhi and Chandigarh as the are city corps). TN is at 275 lost its bus penetration title to KA which is expanding like mad.(slight incrase will happen in TN numbers due to partial missing of Nellai divn numbers)

In all, hope next time this report looks at TN as a whole and even for other states like KA where multiple corps exist, they can do a cummlative report. TN-STC' with a lass of 1,050 cr should have taken the second spot after DTC in losses, but escaped due to multiple corps...

^^

It would 302 bus per 10 lakh population if TNSTC nellai fleet is included.

When this is calculated based on service provided (i.e KM covered per sqkm in area) TN would be much better.

On staff productivity looks UPSRTC, Orrissa RTC is much stressed than SETC.

First of all they require a big :applause:, ABT is doing the job which SR has to do, connecting Coimbatore with other Tier-II cities of TN. It would be first of the king for them to operate specials to places other than Chennai/Bangalore

Here are the cut-chasis bus pictures that I took in thuthurmattam near coonoor. I took these pictures about 6 months back (sorry for the quality of the pictures though), recently I noticed that the original seats have been modified with short ones with iron bar in the top of the seat (like the ones that we used to have in short haul Cheran buses). This bus is still maintained with the same glory like how it was before 6 months.

Might be these coaches are from the one of earlier lots.
Instead of completely retiring those coaches they are smartly using in tire II routes.
But the occupancy is a question mark?
will they pick up enroute passengers.

I don't think ABT is doing such things. They might be moving that bus for some special trip and it may not have good frequency because they have announced this special trip before 2/3 days.

Yesterday i took Coimbatore-Rajapalayam bus to reach madurai. Around 25 people got down at madurai and 8/9 people were going beyond madurai. Saw them getting good crowd for this new service. It was launched few months back. The bus was TN38 AU 3223 and it got some refurbishment work done very recently. It was looking like a brand new bus. Bus started around 11.20(20 min late due some unknown reason) and reached madurai around 3.30. It runs via Tirupur, Dharapuram. Very comfortable journey and the fare was Rs.265. In return, it starts from Madurai at 11.59 PM(This is to avoid the confusion in booking).

They ran AE built(less than an year old) bus in Coimbatore-Karaikudi. If they wanted to run older buses in Tier-2 cities route, then should have gone to CBE-Chennai route. I was expecting AE built bus in RJPM route but got disappointed. Anyways we got one good operator in CBE-MDU route.

Thanks to SETC/TNSTC. Ungal mel vecha trust veen pogula.. TNSTC volvo/MB bus vanginalum onnu thaan, ulagam opp. suthinalum onnu thaan.

Atchi marinalam kaatchi marathu for SETC and TNSTC!! because like Indian railways, something fundamentally went wrong with the corporation in adminstrative way. If IR is struck up with 1970 technology means, TNSTC/SETC is struck up with 1990-2000 scenario. Both are surviving because of the network and no. of daily commuters.

Uff.... Guys, let the first service start and then we can expect a lot of MB.
I am still not positive about this, and I can vouch my paycheck that this will not happen anytime soon. After all, we all know how TNSTC/SETC works! :)

Boss...Already TNSTC- Nellai caught up in a financial crisis (Not only this TNSTC many TNSTCs). they don't have funds even to pay for the uniform dresses for driver & conductors how can they buy buses worth 1 crore

Binai, the bus was kind of similar to the one you shared.... but the front face was curved like very old type MTC (70s) buses... There used to two buses running between coonoor and thuthurmattam...one with a single board and the other one with dual board...

And just another piece of information, the TML cut-chasis bus that I captured (running between thuthurmattam and ooty) was served by real mini-cut chasis (2/3 of the cut-chasis length) in the beginning of 80s. I could not remember if that bus was a TML or AL. But later in 85 or something, this bus was replaced with typical cut-chasis AL buses regularly..say every 7-8 years..

There was one another mini-cut chasis bus running between Drook and Coonoor on those days... Unfortunately I dont have the pictures of them...but have only the memory..

17 Lakhs ?? :ohno:

Irizar-TVS Charges only 22 Lakhs for their iT09 body! On 12M Chassis, with 2x2 push-back seating and Airconditioner!!

I think there is some mistake in the figures quoted by the reporter. It should be around 9~10 Lakhs, at the most.

Universel was the operator. Of late, a lot of Universel buses are running into trouble. Sometime back, one of their buses had an accident near Bangalore. Their first volvo itself had an accident, in its first run! The bus (a Volvo Multiaxle - 9400XL) ran into a watertank or pond after the driver lost control of the behemoth.

They had already cancelled Bangalore Marthandam volvo.

There are three Multi-axles already going to Trivandrum via Nagercoil. I was expecting this Nagercoil bus to be cancelled since a long time - such a long day service did not make any sense to me at all.

KPN has launched a new Bangalore-Ernakulam Multi-axle service (perhaps one bus released from one of the cancelled routes). The timings are very odd (10pm from both ends).

With this, KPN has 6 services from Ernakulam (2x Chennai, 2x Bangalore, 1x Hyderabad and 1x Madurai).

Some six months back i travelled in this service and it was 2+1 semi sleeper at that time. Look's like they have converted this one recently. It was a very irritating experience travelling on this bus waiting for parcels to be unloaded at many points and we finally reached Tenkasi at 8:30 AM. Pathetic service. Arun,

Thanks a lot for those old AL bus pics, especially the Southern Roadways bus. Still there is one such silver color bus belonging to TVS running in MDU.

Guys,

AL is showcassing JANBUS in AutoExpo 2012 currently happening in Delhi.
Looks to be a very interesting product for intracity segment for STU's.
Find below few details.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7007/6635628487_80638f5397_z.jpg

- FE SLF (entry + one step)
- Air suspension all wheels
- Floor height at 650mm
- AL has 16 patents with this bus
- Kneeling option
- Fully flat floor thought the body
- Avl in Automated Manual transmission
- Seats are mounted on the side walls of the bus

Details, Pic source: http://motorindiaonline.com/

--------------

One big doubt i have is that LF floor height is 635mm, has this bus got into SLF category just becoz of 15mm...experts can clarify...

G.D.Naidu named his Bus service as U.M.S (Universal Motor Service) service, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu and this service was offered in with the mind of People's goodness. Then he got several buses and made it to run in and around the Coimbatore City. He drove that bus service in between Pollachi and Palani.

Any sneek peek view of the new buses, I am eagerly waiting to see the new ones. Any idea which company has bagged the contract for SETC.

Also noticed that all SETC buses going for FC has two parallel lines or patterns in the sides while it was simply plain before FC.

In a particular service route no 36 it had PCG written below the route no what is it?

PCG (Passenger Come Goods) service are operated to all coastal area specially for fishermen. In PCG service normal 10 seats are removed with luggage compartment So the fishermen can keep there luggage saftely.
You can't find PCG service anywhere in Tamil Nadu.

I can post the interior of those buses

In a old mofussil bus saw the paint mark Kanyakumari - Neyveli whether the service is running

Its withdrawn. Expecting it'll back soon. The bus you saw (N 10XX) was a Ex Neyveli NH Express bus

Arun,
Looks like it is built by Nellai divn? Why they have different liveries? How many are there in total now?

Those buses were built before fare hike. It'll be back to our livery after FC. One by one all the town buses are getting our traditional blue-white livery after fare hike

Dhandapani sir all are built by NGL Ranithootam unit as per cbe model the side view are look alike as CBE built

Their own design which was derived from its predecessor 12XX series

Reno should confirm this how many buses in NGL i remember that he had already said only 3 buses.

Totally 4 S.S body Town buses
TN 72 N 1666 Nagercoil - PillaiThoppu
TN 72 N 1667 Nagercoil - Kesavanputhenthurai
TN 72 N 1679 Nagercoil - Thidal
TN 72 N 1680 Nagercoil - Neduvilai

All are Ranithootam built and registered as TN 72 (Repayment)

One of them.

Arun,

Thanks a lot for those old AL bus pics, especially the Southern Roadways bus. Still there is one such silver color bus belonging to TVS running in MDU.

Here is the TVS Bus which you are talking about. Vintage beauty is still serving TVS.

KaSRTC is stopping one Blr - Mdu Rajahamsa (8:30PM dep both sides) and putting in one Non AC sleeper which will dep from Mdu at 9:15PM and 9:45 PM at Blr. This change is refelecting form 17th of Jan'12 from Blr side. Fare:Rs 487

This a right change as SRS doing good with their sleepers which was missing in KA fleet bound to Mdu. I am sure, it will be a instant hit.

KaSRTC has also revamped its e-booking website and now its looks to be one of the best travel websites in India ... related post in KA bus thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=87280172&postcount=1372)

IRT called up a separate tender for fitting Air Suspension in TN STU Buses. I think all our Pseudo UDs, Luxury Coach and SD buses will get air suspension fitted. Looks like SETC is biggest gainer and next comes TNSTC-Kumbakonam.

List..

SETC - 540 nos,
TNSTC-VPM - 50
TNSTC-Kum-140
TNSTC-CBE-10
TNSTC-MDU-10

Nellai called up a separate tender.

Atleast they are trying to fit Air Suspension in our 12M UDs. Hope we will get 44 seaters instead of 49 seaters in the new lot of UDs.

^^ TNSTC Salem Management is the worst of all. We cannot expect them to bring in any positive changes. We should learn to live with the old dubba buses, and the old bus routes in city.
