Malaysia's First State-of-the-Art Modern-Tropical University Campus

In response to the ever-pressing need for knowledgeable human capital, Taylor's University College (http://sabdtaylors.blogspot.com/2007/07/taylors-university-college-lakeside.html) is building a state-of-the-art modern tropical university campus to meet the need of students and in line with the nation's goal of becoming a regional center of education excellence.

http://www.taylors.edu.my/images/about/content/campus/lakeside1.jpg

The commencement of work for RM450 million Taylor's Lakeside Campus in early 2007 is indeed an exciting phase in Taylor's 38-year-old history and underscores its continued commitment to self-development. It marks another milestone in Taylor's history where great strides have been made since 1969.

The Lakeside Campus will house all existing tertiary programmes, currently located at Taylor's various campuses in Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya. Set on 27 acres of tropical greenery near Jalan PJS 7/5, the campus will be surrounded by a revived 5.5 acre man-made lake, as well as a landscape of water plants, trees and flowering shrubs and groundcover which will provide a rich and stimulating natural environment in the neighbourhood.

The completion of Taylor's Lakeside Campus is another step forward towards realising Taylor's mission to become a university of 20,000 students renowned for its teaching excellence and the distinctive quality of its graduate.

A Quick Tour of Taylor's lakeside Campus:
A warm sense of arrival will be your first impression as the tree-lined University Drive leads you towards the grand Main Entrance. Turn at the Entrance Oval and Roundabout, and catch your first glimpse of the lake.

Pass the Retail Podium where inter-connecting streets lead to shops, cafes, banks, convenience stores and an array of service amenities. Next is a fully furnished 1,000-bed Hostel, neighbouring F&B outlets that face out to the lake and a boardwalk.

http://www.taylors.edu.my/images/about/content/campus/lakeside2.jpg

From the Main Drop-off down the Grand Staircase, proceed to the University Square and Amphitheatre. This popular and important gathering area will be flanked by the Hostel and Commercial Block on the west, Administration Offices, Student Union and a Multi-Purpose Hall on the north, Academic Blocks on the east and the lake on the south.

Plays, recitals and other performances will be staged at the ‘Art Precinct', formed by the Experimental Theatre, the 600-pax Auditorium, 300-pax Lecture Theatre and the outdoor Amphitheatre. The pride of the campus will undeniably be the Library, a splendid 4-storey glass edifice that warrants panoramic views of the lake.

http://www.taylors.edu.my/images/about/content/campus/lakeside3.jpg

Sheltered, landscaped promenades will provide easy access to scores of world-class facilities. Restaurants and kitchens for the Hospitality and Tourism Faculty. Fully equipped Laboratories for advancing skills and knowledge in Science, Computer, Audio and Video, Engineering, Architecture and Design. A Moot Court for making a case.

The beautiful new Taylor's Lakeside Campus will provide all the right conditions for a vibrant exchange between academic, commercial, social and leisure activities. More than just a home to new student population, it will be the nurturing ground for an energetic and dynamic new community.

Taylor's Lakeside Campus will be the vehicle for Taylor's to further enhance the delivery of its purpose, which is to educate the youth of the world to take their productive place as leaders in the global community.

Education industry expected to remain positive this year
By ELAINE ANG

PETALING JAYA: Meg Tan, who has always dreamt of studying overseas, has had her dreams dashed by the current economic downturn.

After completing her Cambridge A-levels in a local private university college, she was looking forward to pursuing an accounting and finance degree in Britain.

Her parents, however, have decided for her to continue her studies locally instead – via a twinning or an external degree programme – to save costs.

“It is the prudent thing to do. We do not know how long the economic downturn will last and whether our jobs will be affected. We can always send her overseas for her last year if finances permit.

“The degree programmes in the private colleges here are pretty flexible in this aspect and our financial burden will be eased substantially as we save more than half of what we need to spend if we send her to Britain,” says Meg’s father Paul Tan.

With more families tightening their purse strings and letting their children study locally rather than abroad to save costs, the outlook for the private higher education industry is expected to remain positive this year, say industry players.

The Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities (Macpu) executive secretary Ko Kim Hooi says the current economic downturn can be an incentive for students to look at twinning and external programmes as cheaper alternatives.

“The education industry is seen as a recession-proof industry as education is a necessity, so the outlook is still good for us.

“During the 1997/98 financial crisis, the local private higher education industry came up with various twinning programmes to help students save costs and this move boosted business as well,” he tells StarBiz.

Ko says more students studying locally will also help the country save on foreign exchange.

According to Monash University Sunway Campus pro vice-chancellor and president (Malaysia) Prof Robin Pollard, the university is showing above-normal application rates.

“So it appears as though some people prefer to study at home rather than face an uncertain future with higher cost commitments by going overseas,” he says.

Some may also decide to further their education rather than enter an uncertain job market, thus leading to a rise in enrolment even in a declining economy, adds Pollard.

“Of course, the hope is that when the economy improves, the additional learning will lead to benefits,” he says.

Moreover, most parents would have set aside education funds for their children since birth as education is an investment for the future.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2009/1/12/business/p1-studentscht.JPG

“Most in the affluent market who can afford to send their children overseas, would have pre-planned and allocated money for their children’s education,” says Taylor’s University College vice-chancellor Professor Hassan Said.

He adds that Taylor’s has a strong line-up of new programmes in the pipeline for students, in addition to its own degrees such as engineering and architecture.

Taylor’s, which is one of the largest pre-university centres in Malaysia, providing British, Australian and Canadian education. has about 10,500 students this year, of which 18% to 20% are foreigners.

Vinayaka Missions University pro-chancellor Dr S. Sharavanan believes it is unlikely the economic slowdown will affect the higher education scenario, especially for bigger institutions offering professional programmes.

“As an investor, we see long-term prospects in the education sector in Malaysia beyond the current and anticipated economic slowdown,” he says.

An additional advantage of the economic slowdown can be an influx of foreign students into the country as Malaysia is seen as a relatively cheaper education hub compared with Britain, Australia and Singapore.

Currently, Malaysia has some 63,000 foreign students.

Very few education providers are listed on the local stock exchange. They are HELP International Corp Bhd, SEG International Bhd (SEGi) and Stamford College Bhd.

HELP International scored top marks for the financial year ended Oct 31, 2008 (FY08) with net profit jumping 22% to RM11.8mil compared with FY07.

SEGi’s financials also showed a marked improvement as net profit doubled to RM6.98mil for the nine months ended Sept 30 versus the previous corresponding period. Earnings were boosted by a gain from the disposal of a property in Kota Damansara, Selangor.

Taylor’s College, School of Hospitality and Tourism (TCHT) today had the honour of hosting the King of Swaziland, His Majesty King Mswati III and his royal entourage who toured the college premises in Petaling Jaya and were briefed on Taylor’s expertise in hospitality and tourism management. Also present was Chairman of Taylor’s University College, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Syed Jalaludin Syed Hasan.

During the visit, King Mswati III was given an overview of Taylor’s College, including Taylor’s impressive Lakeside Campus scheduled for completed in 2009, and visited the RM1 million media hub. His Majesty also viewed the outstanding work of Taylor’s students in the areas of architecture and communications and spoke to the students on their projects.

The royal visit by King Mswati III cemented the ties between Taylor’s and the Kingdom of Swaziland which began in 2006. At that time, five TCHT lecturers were invited to Swaziland for a consultancy project which includes auditing the palace hospitality service systems, provide implementation plan and training in the areas of culinary arts, food and beverage service and housekeeping practices.

The attachment of Chef Frederic Cerchi, Chef Bala Murali, Chef Karam Singh, Anna Kueh and Reuben Suresh at the Palace of Swaziland followed the Consulting Agreement partnership that was initiated to equip the Swazi people with TCHT’s expertise in hospitality and tourism management.

Thanks to the success achieved by the TCHT team, King Mswati III decided to send four chefs from the Palace to Taylor’s College to pursue a two-year Diploma in Culinary Arts, which is the highest French qualification awarded for culinary arts from the Academie de Toulouse.

In his welcome speech, Taylor’s President Mr Ooi Chee Kok said, “It is our utmost honour to welcome the King of Swaziland and His Majesty’s royal entourage to Taylor’s College today to reciprocate His Majesty’s generosity shown to lecturers of Taylor’s when they ventured to Swaziland in 2006 to teach and train Palace personnel.

“This is also the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate to His Majesty, Taylor’s first-class expertise in hospitality and tourism management and we are hopeful that this will garner much interest for mutually beneficial future collaborations between the Kingdom of Swaziland and Taylor’s College School of Hospitality and Tourism.”

According to Mr Ooi, Taylor’s aspirations to provide hospitality and tourism training beyond the borders of Malaysia, and export its high standards of expertise that withstood the testimony of even higher expectations, were greatly enhanced by His Majesty’s continued confidence.

“We are tremendously humbled for being chosen once again to train the palace staff at Taylor’s. This is a progressive move forward by the Kingdom of Swaziland to maintain the highest possible standards to accommodate the rapid changes in the tourism sector caused by shifts in consumers’ tastes and fashionable inclinations. Tourism, while being a main forte of the Kingdom of Swaziland, is no stranger to being subject to change by gently veering towards progressive adaptations.

“We, therefore, applaud His Majesty’s wisdom and vision in adapting and improving on existing hospitality techniques in the Kingdom of Swaziland to maintain her reputation as a major player in the tourism arena,” added Mr Ooi.

His Majesty King Mswati III and the royal entourage were later served lunch at Taylor’s training restaurant, L’escoffier, which was prepared by students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism.

Taylor’s College, School of Hospitality and Tourism is today the largest and most established hospitality and tourism college in Malaysia, boasting of students from over 30 countries and a 6,000-strong alumni occupying top positions in hospitality and tourism organisations all over the world.

TCHT offers acclaimed French diplomas, higher diplomas, bachelors and master’s degrees in Hospitality and Tourism Management through a partnership with the Academie de Toulouse and University of Toulouse, France.

New lakeside campus to boost Taylor's growth
By June RamliPublished: 2010/04/06

TAYLOR'S University College projects a strong growth revenue of 26 per cent this year after unveiling its RM450 million lakeside campus in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, this January.

Its vice-chancellor and president, professor Datuk Dr Hassan Said said that the university is expecting an increase in the number of foreign students, especially via the introduction of 10 new courses by the end of this year from the 48 courses it offers now.

"We are confident that the new lakeside campus and our strong branding will be able to attract more students to our campus," he said in an interview with the Business Times recently.

Built around the 2.2ha mining pool, the campus has a multipurpose hall, administration block, students' hostels, cafe, banks and convenience stores, auditorium, amphitheatre and also a boutique hotel which will be managed by the hospitality and tourism students.

He said the main lakeside campus along with the campuses in Plaza Damas and Subang Jaya is home to close to 13,000 students.

"Our most popular courses are hospitality and tourism courses, whereby 35 per cent of the students are from abroad, followed by our business courses," he said.

He said Taylor's was looking at expanding its brand abroad through its students performances and also by collaborating with substantial educational partners worldwide.

"We just signed a memorandum of understanding with a Korean university to offer our American degree programmes in Seoul as the programmes are popular among Korean students. Through this collaboration they can either come here to complete their degree or go to the US," he said.

Taylor's is also known as the esteem education brand worldwide because many of its students are top scorers in foreign universities.

"For example, the top students reading law in the University of Reading are from Taylor's," he said.

Hassan said Taylor's is also planning to offer medical courses soon.

"Right now, we are conducting a pilot project with four students to see the feasibility of having this course before expanding it further to other students," he said, adding that Taylor's has been around for 41 years and celebrated its anniversary last month.
