In 1986, the City of Tokyo held a competition on a design for a new city hall to replace the old building, dating from 1957, in the district of Marunouchi. Kenzo Tange's prize-winning project was an ensemble of two administrative buildings of 48 and 36 storeys plus a flat-roofed conference hall. The complex was to be constructed in the more easily accessible district of Shinjuku. The blocks are grouped around a central plaza that holds 6000 people. The tallest building has been divided into 2 quadratic towers at the thirty-second floor to avoid an overly massive appearance and establish a relationship with the other tall structures in the area.
In his facade design, Kenzo Tange employed the basic forms of traditional Japanese architecture: or mullion and transom section. The resemblance between his horizontal and vertical window lines and electronic circuits inspired him to accentuate both the microchip element and technoid character of the facade in order to create a contemporary work of architecture corresponding to the computerised society of today.

8.5/10 - The towers are nice, and so is the overall design - it reminds me a bit of the front of a cathedral. Overall, though, the building is more about mass and power than height.

I like this tower a lot. It's quite bulky but it overcomes the slab look with the two towers on top. The colour is nice and I like the way it resembles a cathedral. 8.5/10

This place has such a foreboding presence on the skyline. Very massive and clean looking. Almost hard to believe that it is actually a municipal building, as everyone has already noted.

This structure is great to look at up in person. It fits in perfectly
with the shinjuku skyline. Tokyo should be proud to have this
as their city hall. I was so drawn to it, I have about 1 hour of
video of just this building from all the different angles.

When i was in japan a few years ago..me and my family where driving on ....i think the shuto expressway...we would be in tokyo and then we would see a large building , then we WOULD keep on driving...well then the highway goes right next to the building........IT WAS AMAZING..it looked as if we were gonna go stright in to the monster!

The sheer mass of this scraper is very striking when you see it for the first time.. Got lots of character.. :) I like how the two side collumns are joined together.. :cool:

The facade is abit disappointing i think.. The UOB facade was much much better.. This one is abit dull..

went to see this beast the other day.

one of the most incredible buildings ive ever seen - really on a par with some of the best scrapers in the world

my only problem is with the colour - the silhouette on the shinjuku skyline with the triple tiered park hyatt with fuji in the background is one of the most mindblowing things you'll ever see.

it looks so overbearing, so ominous.

i give it 9.5 out of 10. if it was black granite itd be terrifying!

i imagine this is the tallest government building in the world - fitting for the worlds largest city (35 odd million at the last count) i guess!

the detail on this building is incredible - it looks like a high tech chipboard up close with the different colours of granite.

there is another 25-30 storey building next to it which also houses other sections of the city's government....

they could have built this tower at over 1000 feet if they had wanted to. but it just looks one hell of a lot taller than its 800 odd height..

Sturdy looking. The microchip effect is caused by the tiny windows and granite panels. The top floor is actually below those two circular drums. I wonder whats in them? 8/10

Everyone seems to say this is a "massive Cathedral". I agree. I really like its size, and the grace which the towers come out of the really tall base (I like that). The towers are also spectacular, the way they change every couple floors. I like the facade and windows shapes, but it is not as good as it could be, and the transitions between the different sections are a little rough, but its a wonderful building just the same.

I love this building! It reminds me of circuitry, which was the point.

Good cladding, nice design (a classical Kenzo Tange, though :-) ), impressive bulk and height but not overwhelming, and huh, inspiration from one of the most gracious cathedrals in the world (can't say it really is gracious but well, it has references at least :-) )... Good stuff !

Nice, intelligent, well thought out, it looks like a robot with two arms raising above him like it is boss. I love this tower, Tokyo City Hall Tower is amazing in height, colour, and of course design. It's not the tallest building in Tokyo obviously, but still it stands out pretty nice. 10/10
