Ok so here it goes

[clears throat]

I usually check the forum out when I have time. I'm currently working over the summer break so I log in in the morning from home and later browse through it at work. I don't log in or post from work coz of the fear of being shahid'd from my internship. So currently on weekdays I post when I get back from work in the evening. From August, I'll be logging in more frequently.

The Indian forum is quite disciplined and the post quality is decently high. If anything goes wrong when I'm at work, I believe that either of the two mods would be able to swiftly handle the incident at hand. This brief absence of mine every day till August shouldn't affect the forum. I'll work out a plan with the current mods so that at least one mod is online all the time. I'll also come out of the invisible mode http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/6339/happyxaj.gif so that people can notice my presence and feel free to contact me regarding any issues that they have.

besides moderating the forum, some of the things on my manifesto:

1. Better forum and content organization - renaming threads, make project info available on the first page of each infra thread. More on it here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=38696540&postcount=22).

2. Brand building - more new interesting threads in the international sections to promote the nation. I'd look into perhaps forming a core team of members who can chip in.

3. Reviving the Heritage & Monuments section

4. Reducing clutter - sticky threads in the chaibar along with the threads at the bottom of the forum will be put into the new "India Forum Issues & Archive" subforum. This new name would be subject to approval by the mods and I'll ensure it gets approved.

5. Upholding the traditions of SSCi - I will not be a tyrant and will seek advice from the 2 gurus on moderation and before taking any "big" step.

6. Distributing free color tvs for everyone who voted for me. :nocrook:

j/k, I don't play dirty votebank politics.

Now I'm wondering if I even have a chance against IU :colgate:

Well I would -

1. Delete unneeded thread

2. Delete of topic posts in threads

3. Stop arguments in threads

4. Increase activity

5. Like IU said revive History & Heritage and other subforums that a mostly dead.

6. Start more threads in international forum which I already do :tyty:

7. I'll spread out more to maintain all subforums

8. You can PM if need anything done

9. I won't be distributing free color TVs for evryone who votes for me :tongue3:

Folks, I have had a bit of experience with polls and soapboxes but I will refrain from anything long and flowery, and boring.

As many of you know, I am involved with tall buildings and infra in my day job as well as in SSC, starting at about the same time as a matter of fact. I hope this will help me to add some value to discussions as a Mod as well as a senior forum member. I also have some experience in urban planning, development and policy.

Without getting into the details too much, here are a few things that I hope to do:

1. Being available as much of the time as possible for SSC activity so that together with Sun and Sudheesh, the best possible response can be delivered to SSC-ians.

2. Organising the thread and forum structure in the most-user friendly way possible.

3. Pragmatic adherence to SSC regulations and conventions.

4. Create more focus on sections like basic infrastructure, hospitality and tourism and heritage & culture.

5. Encourage a professional discussion forum to generate ideas from the rich SSC brain pool which could be deployed in the real world.

6. Try to evolve ideas with the participation of all of you to increase the interface between SSC and the community, be it promoting India across the world or in suggesting solutions to problems in urban development/planning.

Apologies if the soap-box fever got the better of me, but these are some of the things which I think we can do together.

Thanks in advance! Have a nice week ahead.

Cheers! :)

Ok.

Here I go. I know I wouldn't be any match for IU Or Ajay, but being a mod was one thing I would like to do in SSC. I am no Pranab or Lalu. So I have kept it plain and simple.

1.The SSC-India forum is excellent with lots of knowledge-proof people who are contributing to SSC-India and giving us updates.

2. Promise to keep the International Forums as much updated as I can.

3.My main focus as a mod is get rid of nonsense from many forumers. I am logged in SSC around 6-8 hours a day. So I can promise to remove unwanted posts and arguments in many other forums. I will try to access other sub forums which I don't usually do it as much as I can. Spammers will be warned and banned when necessary with the permission of other Senior mods.

4.The other thing I want to do is to redirect the new users of SSC-India to the Indian Forum Issues thread so they will know how to post images, articles, edit their posts, and uploading videos on Youtube. Hopefully, in case I am not online, other SSC members would follow suit.

5.I follow a policy, "Live and Let Live". So unless the person is acting like an idiot, I won't bug him.

6.Besides that, I will also focus on organizing the threads in the India sub-forum and the chaibar and delete the threads with the agreement from other two senior mods (Sudheesh and Sun). Similar threads will be merged into one.

7.We all are here to learn. So asking questions will always be encouraged unless it is rhetoric.

Thank you.

ok, I guess it'll take time to get a reply from sun,

Am posting my manifesto here. This is what I can do for our forumers if I'm voted :D

First and foremost, I can dedicate my time (I'm online for at least 8 - 10 hours a day in SSC) for a prompt response for fellow SSCians and to make forum as user friendly as possible. (Ofcourse with Sudeesh, Suncity and drwho [no more active I guess])

Start a 'Initiation' section (With all necessary stuff) for the newbies before they plunge into actual posting. This will avoid the so-called spammers, spoilers, etc..

Standard titles, proper information about the thread in its first post/page. Remove unnecessary sticky threads, moving dead threads to archive, etc. No sms, chat languages (credit: Zenith_suv) in threads except chaibar, etc

Reviving History & Indian Architecture section and creating new topics like "Civilizations of India, History of Transportation in India, Indian Architects, Architectural styles of India, Architectural Perception, Ornamentation, cyberspace, etc(after all this is an architectural forum ;))

Will also create a section/thread for our forumers to put in their ideas in creating a new thead, etc. (The Brainstorming section) and possibly a technical thread for each section under infrastructure.

Possibly creating a team of fellow forumers who can actually give some ideas as well as work together with me to start/update threads in International sections

Also including a thread for each of the following under infrastructure section - Tourism, Infrastructure Security, Communication & Geophysical Monitoring networks (satellites, meteorological stuff, etc), Waste Management, etc

No color tvs, 1000 bucks, etc... But I'll make sure that I deliver whatever I've promised :)

Hope I covered most [if not all] of the expectations!

Thank you guys! [mabbe bringing in new smilies like this http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8633/blow.gif]

OK , Heres a small intro , followed by my activity at SSC India & my manifesto.

I Mihir, originally from Mumbai , am now doing my Post-Graduate studies in the US. I've been in the states since Jan 2008. Apart from Movies , music i have a great passion for news & current affairs . I love India very much & hence love tracking India's progress in various sectors [economy , agriculture, industry & technology , infrastructure ].

Me at SSC
I have been a member since a couple of years . I have always mentioned a steady & consistent presence in the forums. My contribution to the forum can be enlisted as follows:

1. Updating the forums with the latest development in each of the above mentioned sectors.

2. Participate in healthy , constructive debates with other members on contentious issues related to growth in India.

3. My most prominent contribution however would be posting pictures showing progress of the quite a few projects of Mumbai [towers, roads, & the Mumbai INtl airport] , taken during my trip to the city this January .

My agenda for the forum
1. Focusing on Agriculture, Public Health care , Education . Since the priority of the UPA Govt. has been the aam aadmi, it would be interesting to track the progress here.

2. Promotion of Indian developments in International Fora.

3. Encouraging productive discussions/debates amongst members , on all major issues concerning Infrastructural development .

4. Tourism & culture : Our forum can be a great platform for promotion of Indian culture & hence tourism.

5. Discipline in the forum : I am all for healthy debates , but without them ending in a fist-fight . No-tolerance towards personal assaults & racist / chauvinist comments.

6. Im online almost throughout the day [except offcourse when i'm asleep or on the road]. Hence id be available most of the time to monitor the community & to help members with their issues, if any.

If you want me to elaborate on any of the above points , feel free to ask me the same. :)

no, im just asking because drwho has not been active for almost last two years but he still remains to be a moderator.

Actually he functioned mainly as the Asian Moderator and moderator in one of the news sections in the main forums. He also helped us out when needed.

He has not logged in for two months now and he left no message for either me or Sudheesh or RafflesCity. Which is very unlike him. I have contacted him again yesterday but haven't received any reply. Hopefully he is okay.

I would have preferred a poll that was more confidential.. and might have avoided people from seeing who is voting for who etc This way forumers might feel more confident voting ? I also would have wished there were some basic criteria for people being nominated to be eligible for the poll.

Anyways, I will refrain from voting, its just my personal choice, no offence to anyone.

We have had a discussion thread open for quite some time.

I think I mentioned that the voting will be 'open'. That way we know all who voted. This is mainly to avoid any future issues.

We will not count votes from forumers who have registered today, have very few posts, are not regular participants in SSC India. Sudheesh and my decision will be final in this regard and will be done in consultation with all the candidates. If we reject a vote, we will publicly say so with a reason.

We have only put in names of people who sent us a pm saying that they wish to become a moderator. The only person I am not sure of is ferrari_fan. He seemed to be interested only if India101 was. But he did not send us any pm. So I have not included his name.

Best of luck to all. Happy voting.

I've been travelling and I honestly didn't think I'd have much to offer as a moderator, other than reading through posts once a day and making sure no one was coming to blows, so I felt it made better sense to continue to enjoy the forums in the same way I always have till now..

All votes are visible to everyone. If any contestant has any issue with anyone's vote and they have a valid reason, then Sudheesh and I will take a decision on that complaint in consultation with all the candidates. And we will make public our decision and give a reason for it as well. I think that is fair enough.

yup , it seems the whole of trivandrum forum is coming to life.

Then, we have to make re-pole between top two canditidate...

Since some of the forrumers might be voted for others too.. so we have to give some space for pick the best out of top two...

So we can keep consider the existing vote poled for the top two canditidate and give options for other voter who earlier voted for other than the top two...

So.. majarity of forummer including contest will give their option ..for best out of it..

Well, you see, your point about votes foing in for 'one of them' is a universal phenomena. Ajay is an active forumer and one of the seniormost members abroad SSC. I've seen his posts across all forums of SSC sans the Chaibar. Only thing he is not too regular on other forums than the Kerala ones. But that shouldn't be a handicap as I guess ~95% of forumers tend to be comfortable in their own niche. Only India101, Jai and a handful of others trod in a pan-SSC way.

Well, I guess someone raised the same point agianst IU as well, that he is never spotted on South Indian forums.. Well?

Once they assume the role of the mod they are obliged to look into other forums outside their turf, and the guys in contension are obviously well aware of the fact. I think we must appreciate the democratic process adopted for the pick rather than whinge about it. ;)

To be honest, if not for Ajay's late candidature I guess IU would've swept aside all the other contestants. I was also all in hands for IU but that Ajay is a dear old friend.. Look at the status minus Ajay! Its almost 100% IU!

I believe in posting constructively when I have something solid in hand such as pix or fresh info to put up rather than to slap a comment here and there. Not that I believe that focusing on subjects where one can contribute the most is at fault, but I have worked and lived across India, and I love to catch up on all the places. Cheers! :)

apart from scorpio genius and occasionally Ajay , that is a list of a whole lot of people whom I never knew existed in SSC india , guess I should become more pan-india in my browsing approach.

On the poll topic , it's a close one between Ajay and IU but IU's led from the start , if previous polls are anything to go by then roughly 85-95 members activly vote. SO still some time left in this I reckon.

To be fair to Ajay, that means YOU dont visit the Kerala & Trivandrum forum atall ! :dunno:

But yes, I too find is this poll is very polarised because of the nominations. Since many Trivandrum forumers are ganging up and voting for Ajay, the rest of India has ganged up ( unofficially ofcourse ) and are promoting IU as many are not familiar with Ajay. So in ways IU is also a beneficiary along with Ajay.

If not for this I would believe there would have been a fairer distribution of votes with all the candidates getting some support. For example some of the candidates with very few votes are also equally capable ( or equally incapable ) as Ajay or IU.

Having said that it was a bold initiative by the Mods to opt for a democratic poll for Mod selection, which is a rarity and not mandatory in SSC. But personally I am not sure of its effectiveness, maybe I am wrong. Hopefully this will be learning lessons for all next time, be it the way nominations for Mods were selected, decision to go for an open poll, or be it the way we tend to gang up and vote or not vote. We are all growing up.. the hard way I think :(

As for the would-be-Mod, what I ask is, who ever is selected as the Mod as a consequence of this, please take up the courage to shed partisanship and become a valuable and amicable addition to the staff list, as once you are in job there is a lot of hard work to be done not only in getting the bricks and shoes thrown in from the local forumers but also negotiating and doing a tight rope walk with the international Mods and foreign opinions. So you will need all the luck, so good luck to the candidates.

And no before you ask, 'Fusi, how can you give a godamn lecture from your ivory tower' can I say am not above it all, am still in the loop.. but hey someone had to shout out the 'undercurrent', so why not me

Nataraj,

Good Day.

In any organization, let it serve Corporate, Co-operative, Charity, Political or Religious purposes, a new entrant will not have a voting right. The admission / membership register shall be closed few days prior to voting. If the register is not closed, then there shall be a cut off date, whereby - only those members who joined before a particular date shall have the voting right. This is to safeguard the interests of the active workers of that organization.

After the election, the membership registry shall be open for all, whereby more people can join and contest for the forthcoming elections.

Providing new members with voting right shall lead to un-necessary complications during an election process.

Not true. I do post new projects in the Hyderabad forum sometimes and in the B'lore forum from time to time. I don't search for projects from Chennai, trivandrum and Cochin cos there's a whole army of more informed and gung-ho members who have probably already discussed renders and plans for a specific project.

India101, Bhargavsura, Mihir and Kewl Batty - You folks don't need to be disheartened. You're all assets to the forum and if I become the mod, I'll look into implementing your uber-awesome ideas that were part of your manifestos. There are some points that can be implemented right away and don't need any mod powers. So for the greater interest of the forum will you soon proceed doing so?

I have put in an announcement also. If you guys wish we can put up a message in each of the popular threads as well like Airport and Aviation, Railways etc...

As far as which votes count and which don't, we will decide that in consultation with all the contestants. We had already given some guidelines. So let's avoid making a public issue of that right now.

AjayPP: again a great contributor but may have lot more regional influence than at national level. seems like he got some strong fan following. He is a sure shot to win but Kewl Batty has spoiled his party big time.

Kewl Batty: Dont know much about the guy but has been an absolute surprise so far. tieing AjayPP. looks like Tamil & south vote is evenly split giving INDIANSUNITE a sure shot at victory. I did not expected this at all.

Todscreen: Boy oh Boy!! what a surprise. surviving several home calls of BAN & TROLL from fellow countrymen. Kid emerges from the ashes as a darling of neighboring country. todscreen proved one prevailing SSC forum theory wrong all the way. He isnt pain in the butt for everyone, only his fellow countrymen's butts that is.:lol::lol:

Unfortunately, you had been competing on national level with the likes of IU/AjayPP/Bhargavsura. Don't get me wrong but these guys have been on the scene for quite a while and have contributed immensely just like you. Had you competed at regional level I am sure you would've been an extremely tough competitor.

Sorry Natarajan, If Ajay wasn't in contention then the votes from the Kerala section would've fallen in for IU. IU would've crossed 150 votes by now as most of the Kerala forumers would've voted for him. Same principle applies for KB too. Ajay and KB has managed to split out IU votes.

Ajay's votes have come from Trivandrum forum primarily, and KB's from the whole of TN forum. Just shows how strong the Trivandrum sub-forum really is in SSC.:)

^^ Kewl has a great knack of getting info about new projects....He has posted valuable info on topics like High Speed Circular Corridor and the Tech Park Projects in the Chennai subforum.

I have not visited the TVM subforum, but i guess Ajaypp is a great contributor too.

So these two can assert their subforum votes, the regional votes aren't wasted.

Anyway, it looks like IU all the way....Indians have United for IndiansUnite

Congrats IU!!! You deserved to be a mod. Hopefully we will now see more cleaning up of the Chaibar.

Why? The Chaibar is pretty orderly.

I don't see the urgent need for change - moderation in the Indian forum has been pretty tight, and there are few to no inflammatory posts / topics allowed. There's no need to get more stringent, we should keep it as it is.

Or we could go the path of the DLM ;)

Marathaman
July 15th, 2009, 03:50 PM
^Yeah. I fail to see why Chaibar needs a "cleanup". Chaibar is meant to be random and disorganized.

Also, moderation here is already pretty heavy. Even mildly offensive comments disappear without a trace.

Can we stop non-Indians from voting? I see a few votes from "foreigners"

Also raises the natural suspicion - Are non-Indian voting blocks (who aren't interested in to Indian forums) voting for Indians or non-Indians ?.

P.S. 'Indians' there implied Indians by roots/nationality, and also people who are truly interested in India.

I could post on just about any nation's SSC forum. No way to verify my nationality. Except, my posts will reveal if i really know anything about India or if i am interested in Indian affairs/issues, OR if i am just using the forum for past time and posting nothing useful about India. Unable to say more unfortunately.

Please correct me on any point if i am wrong.

P.S: This post is only touches on ".. all the candidates are Indians". However anybody is perfectly free to post anywhere. My previous post was only about voting/candidates.

I don't want to use the word "imposter". Since the question of nationality of voters was raised by a few, the question of candidates came naturally to my mind. If this merits any thought, the mods will deal with it. May i end it there before it gets contentious, please.

I don't see any candidate whose candidacy is questionable. I guess anybody can contest but it is not a cause of worry because the votes of foreigners will be considered invalid which assures that only a deserving candidate will win. I don't see the possibility of the "Non-Indian" winning. But if he actively participates in the India forums and contributes positively, then sure, why not? Anyway, that is highly implausible in an international forums like SSC.

And about cleaning up the Chaibar threads, I also don't feel the need to do that. It is sometimes fun to go back through the old threads and see what had been discussed and bickered about. There are quite some informative ones too. IMO, it should be cleaned only if the SSC servers couldn't handle the website's size anymore and warrants some files to be deleted. Morever, by not doing so, the post count of our forums will increase (to registered users) :D The final decision is, of course, in the hands of the mods.

An individual's post wouldn't increase, but the India forums' post count would, provided you view SSC's page logged in with your user account. That's what I meant.

I think with more and more participation of Indians in the forum and the number of people increasing every months, polls on a new mod for the forum should be kept once every year. But again that also depends on how much is the increase in the number of forumers and how many remain active.

Just a thought here.
