SPAIN - Pyrenees - Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park

more info: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordesa_y_Monte_Perdido_National_Park)

The national park is included in the Biosphere Reserve of Ordesa-Viñamala, declared by UNESCO in 1997. In the same year it was included in the cross-border Pyrénées - Mont Perdu World Heritage Site

The National park constitutes a geographic unit. Its orography is dominated by the calcareous mass (the biggest of Europe) of the massiff of the Three Sorores, Treserols, whose greater elevation is the Monte Perdido, from which in a more or less radial form descend a series of impressive mountainous crests and glacial valleys. The most characteristic and symbolic one is the Ordesa Valley, drained by the river Arazas, origin of the National Park, that is opened in Southwestern direction, but also is important the Tube of Añisclo, that is drained by the river Bellós, in southern direction, the Gorges of Escuaín, drained by the river Yaga, in southeastern direction and the Valley of Pineta, drained by the river Cinca. Although not all of it belongs to the National Park because it's already in French territory and belogs to the Pyrenees National Park, the Valley and Circus of Gavarnie is another impressive glacial cirque that has the highest waterfall of Europe, with more than 400 meters of vertical fall.

:horse:

That really does depend where abouts in the country you are as even at short distances the climate can vary quite a lot. The north in winter is mild and wet (temps around 14-15C). While the South Island can get very cold away from the coast (freezing temps, snowfalls etc) but the cold doesn't last too long.

Short history ;)
A German tank crew gazes across the seemingly endless steppe at the snow capped peak of Mt. Elbrus. Looks were deceiving, and Elbrus was still hundreds of miles away. At 18,510 ft. in elevation, Elbrus was the highest mountain in the Caucasus, and before the end of 1942 the Nazi
swastika flag flew from it's summit.

yeah, mars has some cool stuff.

"Valles Marineris"
Grand Canyon of Mars

This "Grand Canyon" of Mars is about 2500 miles long and up to 4 miles deep. By comparison, the Earth's Grand Canyon is less than 500 miles long and 1 mile deep.
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/144526main_pia02891-516.jpg
A "Grand Canyon of Mars" slices across the Red Planet near its equator. This canyon -- Valles Marineris, or the Mariner Valley -- is 10 times longer and deeper than Arizona's Grand Canyon, and 20 times wider. As the picture shows, you could drop the whole Los Angeles basin into a small part of Valles Marineris and leave plenty of room to spare. In length, the canyon extends far enough that it could reach across the United States from East Coast to West Coast, while its rim stands more than 25,000 feet high, nearly as tall as Earth's Mount Everest.

The Valles Marineris canyon system measures 2,800 miles from east to west and 100 miles to 500 miles from north to south. Individual canyons measure up to 120 miles wide and 5 miles deep. In comparison, our Grand Canyon only spans a maximum width of 17 miles with a greatest depth of 1.2 miles.

http://www.futurehi.net/images/Mars_methane.jpg
The perspective image above was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft. It shows the central part of the Valles Marineris canyon on Mars, which is several times wider and deeper than the Grand Canyon, and a couple of thousand miles long. This canyon is so big, that it can be seen by telescopes from Earth.

An impressive cliff, up to 4000 m high, is located in the eastern part of Echus Chasma shown in this image made available on July 14, 2008. Echus Chasma is an approximately 100 km long and 10 km wide incision in the Lunae Planum high plateau north of Valles Marineris, the Grand Canyon of Mars

The High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express has returned images of Echus Chasma in this image made available on July 14, 2008. Echus Chasma is an approximately 100 km long and 10 km wide incision in the Lunae Planum high plateau north of Valles Marineris, the Grand Canyon of Mars.

http://a52.g.akamaitech.net/f/52/827/1d/www.space.com/images/030617_mars_grandcanyon_04.jpg
Anyone who has peeked over the rim of the Grand Canyon comes away awed, because there is nothing like it on Earth. Martians, however, would merely chuckle.

Mars has Valles Marineris, a system of canyons that stretch for 2,485 miles (4,000 kilometers -- almost the entire width of the United States.

Side canyons are often up to 60 miles (100 kilometers) wide. The central gorge is 370 miles (600 kilometers) across in places. At some spots along the rim, you'd have to look 6 miles (10 kilometers) down to find the bottom. That's six or seven times deeper than the supposedly Grand Canyon.

This image was created by the U.S. Geological Survey by merging Viking mission images with topographic data. It shows just a portion of Valles Marineris. The location, Candor Chasma, is one some scientists suspect has been sculpted at least in part by flowing water.

A combination of steepness and high winds blowing it off I'd guess, Everest is so tall the summit actually pushes into the jet stream.

Just as an info. The smaller the planet the bigger mountains and valleys can be. This is because of the gravity, big gravity results in flat planets.

the famous "green boots" near the "first step" on Everest

Since it's hard enough to keep yourself alive in such an altitude, it's not possible to move frozen corpses of dead mountaineers from there. It's disturbing how many of them you have to pass on your way to the summit..

This is Mt. McKinley's smaller, yet fatter brother. In fact. Mt. Logan is so wide that is has the largest circumference (girth) of any non-volcanic mountain in the world. Actually, Mt. Logan is currently growing!!! In fact, Mt. Logan is estimated to have reached 6,000 metres in height, but was fixed to 5959m to avoid confusion.

Mt. Logan is Canada's highest mountain, and North America's second tallest, just below his taller brother, McKinley.

Mount Merapi

Central Java Province - Indonesia

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi (literally Fire Mountain in Indonesian/Javanese), is an active stratovolcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. It is located approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi) north of Yogyakarta city, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) above sea level

Hi friend!

Maybe we can rewrite your post into the one shown below for better understanding knowing that the article is of great interest.

Mount Krakatoa & Mount Anak Krakatoa

Mount Krakatoa or Krakatau is a giant volcano located in Indonesia. Its eruption in 1883 was one of the most violent volcanic events on record, a wrath of earth. With a huge explosion equal to 150 megatons of TNT, Mount Krakatoa destroyed the areas around it, turning seawater into steam and created giant tsunami with a height reaching almost 40 meters! The explosion was heard up to more than 4000 km (2500 miles) away by 1/8 of the world's population at that time. Dusts from the eruption had affected the world's weather for several years, reaching New York and even Norway. The explosion was equal to 30.000 times that of Hiroshima/Nagasaki atomic bomb and killed more than 35 thousand people.

From 1927 to 1930, there were several eruptions on the site of the former Krakatoa Volcano. On August 11th of 1930, a new volcano and an island appeared. This new island volcano is called “Anak Krakatau” (Child of Krakatoa). It is now a national park.

Anyhow, I love the pictures. Very pretty.

Monts Chic-Chocs,

Certainly far to be the highest in Canada and in Quebec (Torngats Mountains are higher) but still a very nice winter playground..

You know that your pic actually doesn't show the Zugspitze (don't be annoyed, most people commit the same error) but the Alpspitze on the left and the much smaller Waxensteine on the right covering the Zugspitze, don't you?. It can hardly been seen from Garmisch-Partenkirchen at all.
